    Nye perspektiv på Hans Nielsen Hauge (2023)

    Description: Hans Nielsen Hauge established and led at the end of the 18th century Norway's first nationwide popular movement, a low church network that would leave its mark on everyday life, business development and politics in the transition from absolute monarchy to representational government. People called themselves Haugians long after Hauge's death in 1824. It was a spiritual awakening on a scale that deserves considerable room when we write the history of modern Norway. This book provides a new perspective on the roots of the Hauge movement in the religious mentality of the 18th century, on how it functioned in its most radical phase up to 1814, and on the importance of the network for economic modernization and political mobilization in the subsequent decades. Retrospective interpretations of Hauge's complex endeavor are also explored. In sum, the nine chapters provide a broader understanding of the Hauge movement and the era in which it flourished. We hope that the book also sheds light on the state of Norway's people, government and religiosity today, over 250 years after Hauge's birth. The book has been edited by research fellow Eli Morken Farstad and associate professor Kristian Holen Nymark, both historians at the University of South-Eastern Norway.

Det lavkirkelige nettverket satte sitt preg på hverdagsliv, næringsutvikling og politikk i overgangen fra enevelde til folkestyre. Folk kalte seg haugianere lenge etter Hauges død i 1824. En slik vekkelse må få stor plass når vi skriver historien om det moderne Norge. Denne boka gir nye perspektiv på Hauge-bevegelsens røtter i 1700-tallets religiøse mentalitet, på hvordan vekkelsen virket i sin mest radikale fase fram mot 1814, og på nettverkets betydning for økonomisk modernisering og politisk mobilisering framover i hundreåret. Ettertidens fortolkning av Hauges mangslungne virksomhet blir også lagt under lupen. I sum gir de ni kapitlene en bredere forståelse av Hauge-bevegelsen og tiden den virket i. Vi håper at boka også kan kaste lys over folk, stat og religiøsitet i dag, over 250 år etter Hauges fødsel. Boka er redigert av stipendiat Eli Morken Farstad og førsteamanuensis Kristian Holen Nymark, begge historikere ved Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge.

    Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy. Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena. It will be especially relevant for students in performing, composing and scientific music education, as well as theology and religious studies. The anthology has been edited by Henrik Holm (associate professor in education at Oslo Metropolitan University and professor in philosophy at Rudolf Steiner University College) and Øivind Varkøy (professor in music education and music sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Music and professor II in music at Oslo Metropolitan University).

Og finnes det en vei fra religionen direkte inn i musikken som klangfenomen? Forblir det ikke bare en religiøs fortolkning av musikk?     Description: This edited volume discusses multiple job holding as part of Finnish working life. The articles in this book examine this little researched phenomenon through a wide range of empirical data. Based on Statistics Finland's register data, different ways of combining jobs are classified. Interview material sheds light on the conditions for holding multible jobs. A new perspective is provided by the chaos theory of careers. According to the results of the study, very different paths lead to becoming a multiple job holder. The combination of jobs is influenced by the life path and interests of the individual, as well as by constraints and opportunities available. Motives can also be linked to professional networks, decisions made by immediate family, coincidences or whims. This book helps to understand the diversity of ways of working. At the same time, it illustrates the challenges faced by those who work multiple jobs as they try to operate within simpler models and categorisations of labour. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the changing nature of work, especially researchers, students and policy-makers.

    Description: Ministers, deacons, catechists and cantors are among the church professionals laypeople meet in the context of worship, other church services, and congregational activities. These professionals are upholding a social mission, influencing church practices, setting the tone and developing programs and services within their congregations. What are the hallmarks of the different professions within the church? What insight should church professionals have into each other’s identities and areas of expertise to collaborate and participate in interdisciplinary teamwork? And how, in practical terms, should they be lead? Profession and Leadership in the Church of Norway: Organizing Work of a Church in Change provides sociological and administrative insights into general and contextual phenomena in the church professions. Relationships between professions, administration and organization in the Church of Norway are analyzed in light of empirical studies and an institutional theoretical framework. The author discusses how the professions derive appropriate ways of organizing their work. A key finding in the book is that church professions are characterized by calling, autonomy and complexity. These particular features make value-based leadership especially well-suited to the church professions. Part of the work on a new national church law includes addressing central questions about how the Church of Norway, with its extensive range of services and activities, should be led and organized. This book contributes to a broader base of knowledge about administration and the role of the church professions in this complex. In Finland, most discussion on the welfare state's condition has focused on stabilizing the public-sector's finances. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland.     Description: Aberrations of Reason. Capitalist Rationality and its Critique in Juha Seppälä’s Novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). Juha Seppälä’s early literary works, published in the 1980s and in the early 1990s, usually described spiritually lonely men who suffered from an existential loss of meaning and serious alienation problems in the modern world. After this, Seppälä turned to deal with the transformation of the Finnish way of life and its cultural base, until after the turn of the new millennium he began to critically judge society’s ongoing marketization process. This study analyses his capitalism-critical works, particularly his novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). These works do not, primarily, consider contemporary market capitalism from a class perspective, although this sort of perspective is also included in them. They are, above all, critical of market capitalist rationality. According to Seppälä, the basic problem of modern economic profit-seeking lies in the fact that in its unchecked form it is largely indifferent with respect to existential, moral, social and ecological values and principles. Free market economy or market capitalism has, therefore, a destructive influence on individuals, communities and ecological systems. The novels at issue emphasize that due to this it is also, in a deeper sense, incapable of producing existentially meaningful ways of life.

    Description: Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions? The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”. The book has an extensive English Summary for the international readership.

Coordination is central to creating integrated services for users with complex needs.     Description: I denne boka drøfter forfatterne ulike utfordringer og løsninger knyttet til samordning av helse- og velferdstjenestene. Samordning er sentralt for å skape et helhetlig helse- og velferdstilbud til både eldre og yngre brukere med komplekse behov. For å forstå hvilke utfordringer og muligheter som finnes, trenger man kunnskap om organisasjon og organisatorisk kontekst. Boken inntar et organisasjonsperspektiv hvor mønstre og forklaringer søkes i formelle og uformelle strukturer, prosesser og organisasjonskulturer. Brukernes behov for tjenester går ofte på tvers av organisasjoners og profesjoners etablerte grenser.     Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.

Sosiaalipolitiikalla olisi tällaisessa politiikassa aktiivinen ja yhteiskunnan taloudellista ja sosiaalista kehitystä vauhdittava rooli, ja kansalaiset olisi kutsuttu hyvinvoinnin aktiivisiksi tekijöiksi.

    Description: "This book takes the reader on a historical and theological journey through intense awakenings, decisive church foundations and dramatic schisms in southwestern Norway from the 1820s to the present. Based on extensive source material, the book provides new perspectives on the history of the so-called ‘firm believers’ and a nuanced presentation of their theological development from a vigorous revival during the first half of the 19th century to today’s closed religious communities. The Old Paths: The History of ‘Menigheten Samfundet’, ‘Det Almindelige Samfund’ and other ‘firm believers’ describes a diverse religious tradition marked by deep devotion and intellectual rigour, while also giving the reader a glimpse of prominent church leaders, charismatic preachers and devoted believers.     Description: "Post-war expansion of the welfare state is one of the most central changes in Norwegian society today and is often a topic in public debate. When certain conceptions about the welfare state are developed and they are no longer based on systematic analyses but rather ideas and attitudes, they can turn into myths. However, to be termed myths requires documentation, and here social research plays an important role. This book rejects and elaborates central myths in the public debate about the welfare state. The book is structured as an anthology, written by six welfare sociologists at the University of Bergen. The first article introduces the history of The Myth of the Welfare State, a book published by Pax in 1970, then revised a few years later, and with a follow-up version in 1995, 25 years after that. The book became a flaming light within the social policy debate, because it criticized the welfare state for not solving the problem of poverty. Although this problem, relatively seen, is reduced, the following five articles show that, within the framework of the welfare state, there is room for new important critical discussions. One myth focuses on the idea that a combination of a comprehensive state and an active civil society with much voluntary work is not possible. Another concerns the idea that welfare results in dependency. A third is about the “Elder Boom”. A fourth concerns single mothers and assumes that these unlawfully try to get access to welfare. And finally, the last discusses the ideas that crime should result in punishment and “prison pain”. Together, the articles are a contribution to make the debate about the welfare state richer and more dynamic."

Leserne blir invitert inn i en prosess som få har innsyn i: Hvordan Bibelselskapets oversettelser lages, og hvilke hensyn og interesser som gjenspeiles i oversettelsesvalgene. I hvilken grad sikrer oversetterne en bestemt forståelse av Jesus i den oversatte bibelteksten? Endrer oversettelsene kildetekstens betydning og budskap, eller ivaretar oversettelsenetolkningsmulighetene som ligger i kildeteksten? Hvilket syn på Jesus reflekteres i Bibelselskapets oversettelser?Tema i denne antologien er universitets- og høgskolesektorens utvikling og forhold til nasjon og region. I Norge har utfordringen med å sveise sammen et land med sterke og sprikende regionale og lokale identiteter vært styrende for nasjonsbyggingsprosjektet. Den politikken som er blitt ført for å bygge ut høyere utdanning og forskning, bærer umiskjennelig preg av å være en del av et slikt prosjekt. Utdannings- og forskningspolitikken har gjennomløpt ulike faser og vært underlagt skiftende paradigmer. Fra 1960-tallet og de første tiår fremover ble det bygd ut UH-institusjoner utover landet, spesielt for å dekke behov for høyt utdannet arbeidskraft i regionene. Resultatet av denne prosessen ble at Norge ved inngangen til 1990-tallet antakelig hadde et av verdens mest desentraliserte UH-systemer målt i forhold til folketallet. Deretter startet en epoke med en serie reformer for konsentrasjon og samling, for å styrke kvalitet, forskning og nasjonal konkurranseevne i en tid der kunnskap er vår viktigste ressurs. Det har vært skiftende syn på styring av og innenfor sektoren, påvirket av internasjonale trender. Det betyr ikke at de regionale ambisjonene ble mindre, men de antok andre former. Behovet for høyt utdannet arbeidskraft var like sterkt til stede, og parallelt kom økte krav til kunnskapsutvikling og samarbeid med regionalt næringsliv og offentlige institusjoner. I denne antologien forsøker vi å gi et riss av den historiske utviklingen som har preget UH-sektoren. Hvordan forstår og forklarer vi den utviklingen vi har hatt? Hvilke interesser, drivkrefter og aktører kan vi identifisere? Hvilke konsekvenser kan vi spore? I noen grad forsøker vi også å se fremover med utgangspunkt i hvor vi nå befinner oss. Bidragene til antologien kommer fra sentrale forskere innenfor feltet. De teoretiske og empiriske inngangene til temaet er ulike. I sitt mangfold gir de et dekkende bilde av den spennende utviklingen bak den universitets- og høgskolesektoren vi har i dag, og de forutsetninger dette gir for å utvikle sektoren videre."
