    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

    Description: This anthology takes up the subject of border areas and contact zones, both as actual places and as analytical concepts for understanding the past. What happens when different cultures, states and people meet, and what happens in and to the places and spaces where such meetings occur? These are among the questions that are elucidated in nine investigations that deal with several different examples from history, from the very concrete to the more metaphorical, and spanning macro to micro scales of study. The nine contributions range, in terms of time, from the transition from the Middle Ages to the early modern age at the beginning of the 16th century, up to our own era. Geographically, the investigations concentrate on three areas. One is the Nordic region: geographical and cultural contact zones are examined within and between the different Nordic countries. Several contributions deal with the period when Norway was part of a larger northern European composite state, Denmark-Norway. The second area is the Middle East. Here, both the royal court as a contact zone in the Ottoman Empire is discussed, as well as contact and conflict in the Kurdish border countries during the 2000s. The last area is the American Midwest. The chapters covering this region focus particularly on Norwegian immigrant communities in the United States, with detours to other parts of the world such as China and Troms in Norway. In all these time periods and geographical regions, the different encounters, contact and negotiations that took place between various actors and groups in both actual and metaphorical border areas are examined. This anthology originated with a research group in the Department of History at Volda University College and is also a tribute in honor of department’s 50th anniversary. It is mainly aimed at researchers and students in history, but may also be of interest to those working related fields such as religion, sociology or legal history, or general readers interested in history and culture.
    Description: Tema for denne antologien er grenseområder og kontaktsoner, både som konkrete steder og som analytiske begreper for å forstå fortiden. Hva skjer når ulike kulturer, stater og mennesker møtes, og hva skjer i og med stedene og rommene der disse møtene skjer? Dette er blant spørsmålene som blir belyst i ni historiske undersøkelser som tar for seg flere forskjellige eksempler fra historien, fra det helt konkrete til det mer metaforiske, og fra stor skala til nærstudier. I tid spenner de ni bidragene fra overgangen fra middelalderen til tidlig nytid på begynnelsen av 1500-tallet helt frem til vår tid. Geografisk er undersøkelsene konsentrert om tre områder. Det ene er Norden. Her undersøkes både geografiske og kulturelle kontaktsoner både innad i og mellom ulike nordiske land. Flere av bidragene tar for seg perioden da Norge var del av en større nordeuropeisk konglomeratstat, Danmark-Norge. Det andre området er Midtøsten. Her omtales både hoffet som kontaktsone i Det osmanske riket og kontakt og konflikt i de kurdiske grenselandene på 2000-tallet. Det siste området er Midtvesten. Disse kapitlene har et særlig søkelys på det norske utvandrersamfunnet i Nord-Amerika, med avstikkere til andre deler av verden som Kina og indre Troms i Norge. I alle disse periodene og områdene undersøkes møter, kontakter og forhandlinger mellom aktører og grupper som foregikk i konkrete og metaforiske grenseområder, hvor det var ulike former for kontakt mellom aktører. Denne antologien springer ut fra forskningsmiljøet ved Historisk institutt ved Høgskulen i Volda og er også en markering av dette instituttets 50-årsjubileum. Den retter seg hovedsakelig mot forskere og studenter innen historie, men kan også være av interesse for nærliggende fagfelt som religion, sosiologi eller rettshistorie, eller andre lesere som er allment interessert i historie og kulturmøter.

    Description: Michael Agricola’s main work is the New Testament, published in 1548, a magnificent quarto volume of 700 pages with a hundred woodcuts. The basic text used was the Greek text published by Erasmus, Erasmus’ Latin translation, the Vulgate, the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible from 1541. The 450 marginal glosses come from the Luther Bible and the Swedish Bible. In his translation, Agricola distinguished “the Holy Spirit’s own words,” i.e. H. the Bible text, the prefaces and marginal glosses, which were only intended to provide “clearer understanding”. The word of God is much more valuable than the word of man, so that the translator was closely tied to the text. A free translation was out of the question, let alone consciously improving the text. He was able to proceed more freely with the prefaces and marginal glosses. Most of the time he translated verbatim, but did not shy away from omissions, additions and changes when he deemed them appropriate. In this critical edition, Agricola’s marginal glosses on the New Testament are printed in parallel with their sources.

    Description: Avaldsnes on Karmøy in Rogaland, which according to Snorre was King Harald Fairhair's royal estate, has been the center of a major research effort since 2007. Extensive excavations have, among other things, uncovered the remains of a lordly settlement from the AD 200s–400s and the ruins of a royal masonry complex from around AD 1300. Important insights have been gained about the place, the region, and the history of the Norwegian kingdom, and the results are also of significance for international scholarly debates. The papers in this book are based on lectures from the Karmøy Seminar 2022, and have a joint spotlight on the nature of lordship and kingship. The themes range from tribal societies in Roman times via the first kings of the Viking Age to the Norwegian kingdom's collapse at Håkon 6. Magnusson's death in 1380. Prominent professionals from Norway, Sweden and England discuss, among other things, the migrations of Ryger, Goths, and other tribes in the continent in the first centuries AD, the queens and queen mothers of the Viking Age, Harald Fairhair's overseas contacts, and the Norwegian kingship's roots in Nordvegen, the sailing route along the western coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The papers are written to be readable by scholars as well as the interested public.

Omfattende utgravninger har blant annet avdekket restene av en høvdinggård fra 200–400-tallet og ruinen av en kongsgård i stein fra omkring 1300. Viktige innsikter er vunnet om stedets, regionens, og det norske kongerikets historie, og resultatene har stor betydning også for internasjonale forskningsspørsmål. Artiklene i denne boken baserer seg på foredrag fra Karmøyseminaret 2022, og har et felles søkelys på høvding- og kongemaktens vesen. Temaene spenner fra romertidens stammesamfunn via vikingtidens første rikskonger til det norske kongedømmets fall ved Håkon 6. Magnussons død i 1380. Fremstående fagfolk fra Norge, Sverige og England diskuterer blant annet rygers, goteres, og andre stammers vandringer på kontinentet i de første århundrer e.Kr., vikingtidens dronninger og kongsmødre, Harald Hårfagres oversjøiske kontakter og det norske kongedømmets utgangspunkt i Nordvegen, seilingsleden langs kysten fra Rogaland til Hålogaland. Artiklene er skrevet for å kunne leses av både leg og lærd. Dagfinn Skre (f. 1954) er professor i arkeologi ved Kulturhistorisk museum, Universitetet i Oslo, og leder Kongsgårdprosjektet Avaldsnes. Han har tidligere blant annet ledet utgravninger av vikingbyen Kaupang i Vestfold. Frans-Arne Stylegar (f. 1969) er arkeolog, tidligere fylkeskonservator i Vest-Agder og direktør for Varanger museum IKS, og arbeider nå som kulturminneekspert i Multiconsult.

    Description: The biography of Margaret Darling Kilpinen (1896–1965) represents the fields of music history and women’s studies. It brings forth a woman who is of pliable but also strong character. She was active for over four decades in the musical life of Finland. What kind of professional role, combining performing and pedagogical work, was she able to build for herself? She was the wife of a well-known, strong-willed composer who had many ties to Germany, and also the mother of a daughter. How was she able to keep up her own artistry? The book deals with Margaret’s role as a solo and lied pianist, her long career as a pedagogue in the Sibelius Academy and as a harpsichord player with a part in the rise of old music in Finland in the 1930s. There is also the microhistorical angle: While looking at Margaret as a person and her life, general tendencies and attitudes among the cultural circles of Finland of her time are revealed. The main source material for the book, which is available for use for the very first time, has been the correspondence between Yrjö and Margaret Kilpinen.

    Description: This issue of Skriftkultur stems from our desire to honor our good colleague Geir Hjorthol with a festschrift on the occasion of his 70th birthday. As the recipient is a professor of literature and also interested in literary culture studies more generally, we have titled the issue Norwegian Nynorsk contemporary literature and written culture. Geir Hjorthol is himself responsible for the first article, in which he focuses on the role of music within Jon Fosses' novel, Septologien (2019–2022). This article became no less relevant when, a few weeks prior to completion of the issue, Fosse received the Nobel Prize in Literature 2023, the first Norwegian Nynorsk author in the prize’s history. In the second article, Jan Inge Sørbø questions whether reading literature may be stuck in a critical rut, where one is constantly occupied with revealing something hidden in the text. The four subsequent articles explore various recent Norwegian Nynorsk novels or authorships. In the first of these, Elin Stengrundet reflects on how Erlend Skjetne's young adult novel Eit anna blikk (2021) connects to modern migration literature and the Norwegian Nynorsk literary tradition, while Nora Simonhjell's article sheds new light on the inner coherence in the authorship of Olaug Nilssen. Marit Brekke and Wenke Mork Rogne present a post-humanistic reading of the Is-slottet (1963) by Tarjei Vesaas, while Beatrice G. Reed examines the precence of nature in Norwegian Nynorsk picture books for children in our time by taking a closer look at 13 prize-winning Norwegian Nynorsk picture books published up until the year 2000. Non-fiction and the topic of translation are covered by the next two articles. Brage Egil Herlofsen discusses the relationship between Norwegian Nynorsk literary culture and the essay genre, based on two books from the Norsk røyndom-series published by Samlaget (2018), while Marie Nedregotten Sørbø analyzes translations of Jane Austen from English to Norwegian nynorsk in light of literary cultural and hermeneutical perspectives. In the last article, Stian Hårstad shows how the language culture of our time places emphasis on increased pluralization, not least through the rise of digital technology, which facilitates new forms of interaction via writing, before discussing possible consequences this may have for written culture in general, and for studies of written cultures.

Sidan festskriftmottakaren er litteraturprofessor og dessutan er interessert i skriftkulturstudiar meir generelt, valde vi å gje festskriftet tittelen Nynorsk samtidslitteratur og skriftkultur. Geir Hjorthol står sjølv for den første artikkelen om Jon Fosses Septologien (2019–2022), og her rettar han søkjelyset mot forholdet til musikk i romanen. Denne artikkelen blei ikkje mindre aktuell då det nokre veker før festskriftet var ferdig, blei klart at Fosse fekk Nobelprisen i litteratur 2023, som den første nynorskforfattaren nokosinne. I den andre artikkelen stiller Jan Inge Sørbø spørsmål om lesing av litteratur kan ha køyrt seg fast i eit kritisk spor der ein heile tida er oppteken av å avsløre noko som er skjult i teksten. Deretter følgjer fire artiklar som tek føre seg ulike nyare nynorske romanar eller forfattarskapar.     Description: The book approaches the history of Finnish development cooperation through the experiences of development aid workers. At its core is a small group of Finns (experts and officials from different fields) who have worked with international development aid in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their memories and experiences, together with diverse archival material offer an interesting window into the world of development (cooperation), or “Aidland”, from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium. The research focuses on the personal motives and experiences of Finnish aid workers from the 1960s to the 2000s. The book offers perspectives on the historical construction of Aidland since the 1940s and on the gradual integration of Finland and the Finns into its structures. It describes the mindset of the first two generations of aid workers and the factors that made them interested in developing countries. The book follows their education, their first contacts with Aidland, adaptation to work and conditions, returning home and the challenges that come with it. The study gives the reader a view of the power positions, hierarchies and contradictions in Aidland and development cooperation, which at times led Finns to reassess their motives and justify to themselves the meaningfulness of the entire undertaking. Through their experiences, the book also deals with the less-known side of development cooperation, such as corruption, prejudices, and opposition to development projects, as well as their occasionally unwanted consequences in partner/recipient countries. It also sheds light on the effects of the Aidland experience on an individual’s worldview and identity. The book is an academic study suitable for a wide audience, from university students to ordinary readers interested in development cooperation. The book helps to understand both the history of development and the construction of multi-level connections of Finnish society with the countries of the Global South. It is therefore also ideally suited for readers interested in the development of Finland’s internationalization in the late twentieth century. For its part, the book contributes to wider public debates on development cooperation.

    Description: In a gradually more complex and insecure world, children, youth, teachers, and school leaders must learn to navigate unpredictability. To prevent inertia, knowledge, learning and education need to be reshaped to strengthen the ability to act responsibly and constructively. This edited volume reveals a need for pedagogical approaches that may assist both teachers and pupils into dealing with uncertainty, ambiguity, and indeterminacy. The book offers original and new knowledge with polyphony, possibilities, and tensions as overarching perspectives. Each chapter represents specific contexts and perspectives within different segments of the educational sector, on a continuum from early years learning to school management. Concrete examples are offered for teaching, learning, research, and management in a world marked by diversity, tension, and insecurity. Several chapters intersect and include findings that can be transferred to other contexts and practices. The aim is for the edited volume to serve as an initiating impetus for changes in practices, and to reveal how practices in dissimilar contexts may fruitfully stimulate one another. The authors represent different areas within teacher education and school management, and became acquainted while being enrolled in The Norwegian National Research School in Teacher Education (NAFOL) as doctoral students in cohort 8 (2016-2020). We hope the edited volume can inspire representatives across disciplines and sectors to learn from one another and contribute to a polyphonic discussion within educational research in Norway, through a continually questioning and reflexive approach towards one’s own practices and attitudes.

Hvert kapittel representerer spesifikke kontekster og perspektiver innenfor forskjellige deler av utdanningssystemet, og strekker seg fra barnehagefeltet til skoleledelse. Det gis eksempler på hvordan en kan undervise, lære, forske og lede i en mangfoldig, spenningsfylt og usikker verden. Flere av kapitlene tangerer hverandre og har overføringsverdi til andre kontekster og praksiser. Målet er at antologien skal fungere som en igangsettende impuls for endringer av praksiser, der praksiser på ulike felt kan gi næring til hverandre. Forfatterne representerer forskjellige områder innen lærerutdanning og utdanningsledelse, og ble kjent med hverandre som doktorgradsstudenter ved Nasjonal forskerskole for lærerutdanning (NAFOL), kull 8 (2016–2020). Vi håper antologien kan inspirere representanter på tvers av fag og sektorer til å lære fra hverandre og bidra til en flerstemmig diskusjon innenfor utdanningsforskningen i Norge, med utgangspunkt i en kontinuerlig spørrende og refleksiv holdning til egen praksis og egne holdninger.
