Description: The authors of the volume ('From May ’68 to November ’89: Transformations of the World, Literature, and Theory') intervene in the study of the student movement’s “rehearsal” for a world revolution and its afterlife in the 1980s and 1990s by addressing two hitherto neglected aspects – the literary and the peripheral. They consider the roles played by the (semi-)periphery of the modern world-system, on the one hand, and modernist literature and theory, on the other, in transforming the existing world order in the fields of culture, politics, economy, and everyday life. How were critical theory and neo-avant-garde literature in the world, in Slovenia, and in Yugoslavia intertwined with the student protest that advocated the transformation of the capitalist world-system and its socialist counterpart? The monograph focuses on the processes that connected the events of 1968 and 1989 in the social, literary, and theoretical spheres in the sign of continuity and turning points, and at the same time defined our contemporary world.
Description: Avtorji knjige Med majem '68 in novembrom '89: Transformacije sveta, literature in teorije v preučevanje poskusa študentsko-delavske svetovne revolucije in njene poznejše usode v osemdesetih in devetdesetih letih 20. stoletja posežejo z obravnavo dveh doslej zanemarjenih vidikov – literarnega in perifernega.

Description: The book Glasba, politika, afekt: novo življenje partizanskih pesmi v Sloveniji ('Music, Politics, Affect: New Lives of Partisan Songs in Slovenia') explores the potentialities of music in imagining alternatives and establishing alliances, which introduce new senses of belonging and solidarity in global neoliberal capitalism. It examines the reactualization of partisan songs in post-Yugoslav Slovenia with an emphasis on the collective spirit, its rebelliousness and emancipatory potential. In researching the “new lives” of partisan songs, the book focuses on the self-organized female choir Kombinat, an emblematic example of thinking about the partisan art in Slovenia today. Just a part of Kombinat repertoire, partisan songs are discursively, sonically, spatially, ideologically and symbolically reloaded, challenging thus the various boundaries in thinking about this legacy in Slovenian context. Using theoretical framework of affect theory, and particularly theories of music materialism and sonic affect, the book provides an alternative perspective to our understanding of political capacity of music. It addresses four main issues: the role of music and sound in political mobilization and participation, the potentials of musical alliances and musical self-organization and self-education, referencing musical past as a way of political engagement, and finally, revitalization and reactualization of socialist ideas and values in the current moment of global transition.

Description: The book ('Religiosity and consumption in the contemporary Japanese society‘) explores dilemmas regarding the effects of consumer culture on the secularization of religion. Author finds the key to understanding religion in a consumer society in the so-called popular religiosity, which she analyzes against the socio-economic and political contexts from early modern to contemporary Japanese society. Using various case studies she demonstrates how alongside official religiosity the Japanese pluralist religious field ‘allowed’ for popular religiosity with its worldly interests and practical benefits, which has had a positive catalytic role in the modernization processes. A contemporary counterpoint to such traditional popular religiosity is presented through empirical research conducted at Togenuki jizō − a popular religious site in Tokyo. The street vendors of food and clothing in front of the temple are seen to borrow religious symbols to successfully promote their products, whereas the buying of products embellished with religious symbols (i.e. during the so called ennichi festivities) may serve as a means of affirming social identities and establishing temporary communal contexts, within which religious practices take place at relatively regular intervals, thus strengthening the beliefs behind the religious symbols.
Description: Danes se pogosto poudarja kvarni vpliv modernizacije in potrošniške kulture na religijo in religioznost, a že sam obstoj tradicionalne religioznosti v (post)moderni japonski družbi kaže na skrivnost nekakšnega sožitja. Pokaže, kako je japonsko pluralno religijsko polje ob uradni religiji »dopuščalo« ljudsko religioznost v njenih tuzemskih interesih in praktičnih koristih, v »imanentističnem« pojmovanju božanstev in v eklektičnem, neafiliacijskem prakticiranju religije, s čimer je ta imela ugodno spodbujevalno vlogo v modernizacijskih procesih.

Description: Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to and ideas about mental health problems, psychiatric care, and service users today. Drawing on our backgrounds in history, artistic research, and visual, cultural and literary studies, we provide new ways of reading and interpreting the memories and experiences in psychiatry. The study discusses memory, mental hospitals as lived spaces, the history of Finnish psychiatry and the relation between the memories of the different groups of writers. The chapters approach memories from the perspectives of affects and atmospheres, violence and abuse, everyday life at the hospital in the 1930s, feelings of fear and safety in the memories of the children of the staff, and the historically and culturally contingent tensions between hospitals and homes.

Description: Songs and writings: oral and literary cultures in early-modern Finland renews the understanding of exchange between the learned culture of clergymen and the culture of commoners, or “folk”. What happened when the Reformation changed the position of the oral vernacular language to literary and ecclesiastical, and when folk beliefs seem to have become an object for more intensive surveillance and correction? How did clergymen understand and use the versatile labels of popular belief, paganism, superstition and Catholic fermentation? Why did they choose particular song languages, poetic modes and melodies for their Lutheran hymns and literary poems, and why did they avoid oral poetics in certain contexts while accentuating it in others? How were the hagiographical traditions representing the international medieval literary or “great” tradition adapted to “small” folk traditions, and how did they persist and change after the Reformation? What happened to the cult of the Virgin Mary in local oral traditions? The first Finnish 16th-century reformers admired the new Germanic models of Lutheran congregational hymns and avoided the Finnic vernacular Kalevala-metre idiom, while their successors picked up many vernacular traits, most notably alliteration, in their ecclesiastical poetry and hymns. Over the following centuries, the new features introduced via new Lutheran hymns such as accentual metres, end-rhymes and strophic structures were infusing into oral folk poetry, although this took place also via secular oral and literary routes. On the other hand, seventeenth-century scholars cultivated a new academic interest in what they understood as “ancient Finnish poetry”. The book has an extensive English Summary for the international readership.

Description: World literature is always “glocalized.” Every national literature, every region, migration, and multicultural space has fashioned its own version of world literature. Consequently, many world literatures simultaneously exist within the single and unequal global literary system, “Slovenian” world literature being one of them. Based on Casanova’s and Moretti’s theories of the world literary system/space and, using a transdisciplinary approach, the collective volume explores the relationships between the world literary system and small or peripheral literary fields: the Slovenian, Estonian, Croatian, Luxembourgish, and Georgian. The authors of chapters are: César Domínguez, Bala Venkat Mani, Jernej Habjan, Katarina Molk, Jola Škulj, Morana Čale, Jüri Talvet, Jeanne Glesener, Liina Lukas, Irma Ratiani, Alen Širca, Matija Ogrin, Luka Vidmar, Darko Dolinar, Marko Juvan, Marijan Dović, Alenka Koron, Andraž Jež, and Jožica Jožef Beg.
Študije slovenskih in tujih avtorjev, zbrane v tej knjigi, razmerje slovenske književnosti do ideje in prakse svetovne literature prikazujejo v teoretskem in zgodovinskem kontekstu primerljivih književnosti Evrope, katerih sistemski položaj je obroben.

Description: The volume comprises several considerations of the alternative audio-culinary landscape in Slovenia. in doing so it investigates spaces and places which demarcate and concomitantly significantly transcend cultural, national and other borders. Different aspects of audio-culinary variety dealt with in the book expose mundane experiences of intercultural encounters, while reflecting on the position of happy and naive multiculturalism. The contributions emphasise the interaction, the dynamics and mutual relationship between ‘us’ and ‘them’.

Description: City as a Stage explores the diverse ways in which modern cities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries presented and projected themselves, especially by staging major urban events, which have often been interpreted as major local and national turning points. In particular, the book discusses how cities were imagined through the prism provided by other cities, major events, as well as alternative pasts and futures. How –with admiration, indifference or contestation– did various urban actors engage with the city as a stage? The book paints a multifaceted picture of the history of urban events and town twinning, while at the same illustrating how students and travellers experienced cities such as Berlin, Rome, Helsinki, and Tampere. As for individual urban events, Stockholm’s General Art and Industrial Exposition of 1897, Helsinki’s 400th anniversary of 1950, and the Moscow Youth Festival of 1957 are all given their own chapter.

Description: Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (Transforming Finnish Soundscapes, eds Heikki Uimonen, Meri Kytö & Kaisa Ruohonen) is a collection of research essays and texts that study the sonic environment and how it is experienced. Soundscapes related to time, place and the everyday shape our perception of the present and the past. Sounds can be pleasant and beautiful, pacing the day or year, annoying, boring and everything in between. The theme of transforming soundscapes combines the research essays in the publication. The essays draw from various disciplines and methodologies: media studies, anthropological field work and sensory observation, textual analysis and close reading, folkloristics, archeoacoustics and music studies. In turn, the texts gathered via a writing competition show how sounds can be listened to both analytically and aesthetically, connecting them to local, national and transnational cultures and histories pondering what sounds mean to the listeners and how they influence the soundscape they live in. The study is a revisit to the One Hundred Finnish Soundscapes project (2006).
Description: Muuttuvat suomalaiset äänimaisemat (toim. Tutkimus on jatkoa Sata suomalaista äänimaisemaa -hankkeelle (2006).

Description: This book ('Good Muslims, Modern Citizens: Hui Islamic Revival in Northwest China') explores the hegemonic models of modernity and their alternatives in contemporary China through an anthropological investigation of Islamic revival among Hui, a Chinese-speaking ethnoreligious minority. Examining a variety of formal and informal, religious and semi-religious education activities aimed at children and youth in the poor areas of Northwest China, where Hui communities are most numerous, it traces the impact of nation-building and state modernization policies as well as the intensification of religious and economic contacts with Muslim majority countries on the (self)perceptions of Hui as an inalienable part of the Chinese nation on the one hand and members of the global ummah on the other. The detailed ethnographic study of religious life on a university campus reveals how young Hui negotiate their desires and forge their identities as simultaneously modern, educated Chinese citizens and pious Muslims. With its intimate portrayal of how global transformations are expressed and experienced in the everyday life of people on the margins of China and Muslim world, this book contributes to the growing literature on contemporary Chinese and Muslim religiosities.
Description: Skozi antropološko raziskavo islamskega preporoda med Huiji, kitajsko govorečo etnoreligiozno manjšino, knjiga obravnava hegemonične in alternativne modele modernosti v današnji Kitajski.

Description: This edited volume is a handbook of research methodologies for the history of childhood. The history of childhood is a vibrant, multidisciplinary field that incorporates a rich variety of methodological approaches developed in disciplines across the social sciences and humanities, including archaeology, education, ethnology, literature, and history. The volume presents a collection of chapters that engage a range of different research traditions and employ different research material, conceptual tools, and methods of analysis for the historical study of childhood. In doing so, the volume attends to issues specific to the study of children and childhood, such as those related to research ethics and the theoretical complexities of defining ‘the child’ and ‘childhood’. While the central focus is on the history of childhood in Finland, the volume also includes international and transnational cases, contexts, and perspectives.

Description: This feminist monograph accommodates a selection of ethnographic voices pertaining to the adolescence and young adulthood of South Korean women. The work encompasses secret dimensions of female lives, carefully studying the realm of unexpected physical and social movements, events, bursts of energy, all entailing, to various degrees, what cultural studies and feminist theory usually think of as agency and resistance. Book tackles a notion of transgression (breaching, infringement), tries to locate and present the perceived specificities of South Korean female transgressions, and, finally, it discusses and re-affirms the position of ethnography in the intellectual projects of cultural studies after the affective turn.
Description: Pričujoča feministična monografija vsebuje izbor etnografskih glasov najstnic in mlajših odraslih žensk Južne Koreje. Delo zajema skrivno razsežnost ženskih življenj, pod drobnogled jemlje svet nepričakovanih fizičnih in družbenih gibanj, dogodkov in izbruhov energije, ki v različnih merah zadevajo tisto, kar kulturne študije in feministična teorija najpogosteje opisujejo z izrazoma delovanje (agency) in odpor (resistance). Knjiga se spoprijema s pojmom transgresije (prestop, kršitev), poskusi locirati in predstaviti značilnosti južnokorejskih ženskih transgresij, in hkrati obravnava vprašanje doprinosa etnografije h kulturološkim intelektualnim projektom po afektivnem obratu.

Description: The first part of the book discusses the position of Slovenian émigré literature and its place in the framework of Slovenian national literature and culture. In the second part, the most significant immigrant writers in Slovenia are presented, and their position in the cultural context of Slovenia is analyzed. The third part comprises a broader examination of the immigrants’ position in Slovenia, their (cultural, socio-economic, political) integration, and the level of their equality regarding the status of their cultural-artistic activities and their affirmation in broader Slovenian society. The last part of the book opens a number of comparisons between the positions of Slovenian emigrants and the immigrants in Slovenia. The comparative analysis focuses on the factors influencing cultural life of the immigrant community as such. This is followed by a chapter on literary bilingualism among emigrant/immigrant writers. The concluding chapters continue to problematize the concept of a single “national language” as the demarcation line between national literatures. A theoretical concept of a “concentric paradigm of national literature” is introduced. The authors of the included foreword and review are Matjaž Hanžek and Aleš Debeljak.
Description: Prvi del knjige obravnava položaj slovenske izseljenske književnosti in njeno mesto v okviru slovenske nacionalne kulture. V drugem delu so predstavljeni najrazpoznavnejši priseljenski pisci v Sloveniji in njihov položaj v kulturnem kontekstu nove domovine.
