Description: The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city.

Description: In recent years the subject of energy planning has come to occupy a role of growing importance, both in relation to the escalating costs, scarcity and impact of energy procurement and consumption and in relation to the increasingly broad future prospects generated by the development of technologies for the exploitation of renewable sources. Within this framework, the development and use of the latter frequently appears to be without benchmarks for integration into the broader picture of territorial planning, and hence of coordination with other human activities and territorial resources. With this in mind, this book aims to compose the elements of a perspective in which energy planning is seen not as an ulterior and separate form of planning, but as an activity integrated within the more general instruments for the government of the territory, and more specifically one that employs the resources of the territory in a sustainable manner also with a view to endogenous local development.

Description: (Good) government of the consumption of the territory is now one of the most difficult challenges facing planning and all the other sciences that contribute to the design of effective urban and territorial policies. With a view to contributing to debate on such issues, the authors reflect on the new forms of public decision-making, on the potential of territorial equalisation and on other sizing mechanisms, with reference both to the areas under transformation and the consolidated urban contexts. Based on an in-depth investigation of regeneration, requalification and densification projects for urban areas or metropolitan regions in Italy, Europe or the rest of the world, the text suggests various strategies for intervention with reference to the Tuscan case.

Description: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, soundscape, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time.

Description: This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

Description: This book illustrates the study carried out to define the project guidelines for the river park of the Arno and its tributaries the Pesa and the Elsa in the Empoli area, and has been produced by liaison between the territorial Planning Department and the Municipalities of the Empoli district. The integrated analysis of local resources scheduled, on the one hand the identification of the criticalities of the territorial system, and on the other the conscious and distinctly interpretational representation of the local cultural bedrock. The definition of scenarios for the entire territory has made it possible to demonstrate the outcomes of complex dynamics in a synthetic manner, moving on to the individual integrated projects and specific sectorial policies. It is precisely this recourse to scenarios, seen as the embodiment of a phase of project sharing and definition, that is the innovative feature of the «River Contract» proposed as a tool for the management and implementation of the plan.

Description: Thanks to this fourth volume belonging to a series which well represents the Department of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Florence, it has been possible to restore a continuity, albeit with long intervals, which the editorial staff intends to consolidate by involving the entire Department’s “community” (while maintaining the importance of the students’ 'space'). The essays included in the volume, coming from every diachronic curriculum in the Department (pre-protohistoric, oriental, classical, medieval), bring out some trends, among which are the growth of interest in Islamic archaeology (an unexplained countertrend, nowadays), the full transversality of public archaeology or the confirmed articulation of the themes characterising the classical sector since its foundation. Furthermore, the variety of the students' backgrounds is validated, both as basic training and as an academic matrix, confirming the Department’s good response to current needs and expectations.

Description: This volume offers a representative and updated selection of the themes and proposals presented during the first congress of Public Archaeology in Italy, held in Florence in 2012. Public Archaeology is one of the most dynamic and innovative sectors of the contemporary humanistic and social research, and it has progressively established itself internationally as a scientific and cultural movement for the positive innovation of the relationship between research on the past and 'new' social needs. The 2012 congress in Florence contributed to defining the priorities and methodologies of this sector, which nowadays is rapidly expanding in Italy and which over the last decade has earned a place in university courses, scientific journals and advanced design experiments.

Description: This book was born as a “work in in progress” and collects many of the public presentations of Giacomo Becattini’s book “La cosicenza dei luoghi. Il territorio come soggetto corale” (“The Conscience of Places. The territory as a choral subject”), published by Donzelli in 2015. The presentations inspired great methodological passion, concrete perspectives and also criticism. In fact, the text of Becattini has raised issues of great importance on the perspectives of local development, by projecting them on the very future of human societies in a period of crisis and global uncertainty. The richness, the plurality of accents and the depth of the debate that has developed ensure that the collection lives a “life of its own” even with respect to the book of origin. Becattini’s disappearance, which occurred just as the volume was being edited, leaves a huge void but stimulates even more the debate on this fresco, painted by several artists on the trace of his recent work.

Description: This publication concerns the history of the Tuscan Capuchin convents since their foundation in the 18th century, analysed through the transcription and critical edition of a manuscript written in 1704 by Filippo Bernardi da Firenze (1649-1721). It is a source of great interest both for considering the events happening in the convents, and more generally for the history of Tuscany itself. In fact, the manuscript collects numerous transcribed documents - dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century - whose originals are now partially lost. Through these testimonies it is possible to retrace the events of the Tuscan communities and obtain numerous information of a social, anthropological and cultural nature. The manuscript is preceded by a historical introduction to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and by the biography of Filippo da Firenze.

Description: Researches in Cypriote History and Archaeology collects the Proceedings of an international meeting held in Florence in April 2009. The title and the contributions disclose how the original planning of a workshop in Florence evolved in time. A report of the University of Florence research activity in the Kouris river valley has been initially planned; as soon as the idea of the meeting was advertised, it was found appropriate to enlarge the horizon and to include in the discussion further issues on Cypriote History, Archaeology and Philology. It will, thus, be seen that starting from the Kouris Valley a kind of small overview on Bronze and Iron Age Cyprus has been put together. A wide variety of themes and interests raised up during the meeting in Florence, as well as a positive esprit de collaboration which allowed to share new results of interesting researches in progress, open further possibilities of exchanges and lead us to hope for a new meeting dedicated to Cypriote History and Archaeology, to be planned in Tuscany in a next future.

Description: The initial idea for this volume was born while rethinking the organisation of the University of Florence following the recent reform, with the aim of retracing the evolution of the Faculty of Engineering throughout its 40 years, telling and documenting its history, collecting memories and documents from a period characterised by significant changes. The research carried out by the curators and many colleagues has progressively broadened the horizon of the work to collect not only the contents of the academic history but also those of the "civil" history of the Faculty, observing its laborious growth, affirmation and consolidation in the Florentine University, and also noting the relationships with the social and economic context (the city, the region, the national and international involvement) that surrounds a significant collective entity such as “our” Faculty of Engineering. This made it possible to explore and document relevant areas that are fundamental for a non-trivial knowledge of how many actors have crossed the scenario of the Faculty and of which phenomena the Faculty itself has been an observer and protagonist. Thus, the work has been enriched with a great number of contents, declined in each chapter with pleasant energy and that are difficult to summarise in a purely historical or celebratory paradigm. If we try and visualise the readers of this volume, we think of those who will find there the path of their life, who will there find the roots of the present and who will want to discover the reasons for the future.

Description: This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

Description: The leitmotif running through this book is a meditation on the various iconographic representations constructed in the course of research and during the drafting of planning instruments on various scales. There is special focus on the structure of drafting processes, a number of illustrative methodological syntheses and the attempt to adequately record the legends of the maps. The aim of all this is to restore the central role of the production of images in the experience recounted, and their importance within the project for the territory. To this extent, we can say that this book is an illustrated – through the products of research and the operational activities of what are frequently large and articulated groups – approach to the task of construction and organisation of the knowledge of local contexts, materialising in the attempt to delineate guidelines and scenarios for a sustainable future. Representations that are diversified in terms of method and of scale, of users and of aims, offer the cue for addressing issues that are central to the discipline, such as the need to render interpretations explicit and restore the quality of the contexts, the need to construct shared visions collectively, and from grassroots, the need to ensure that the graphic documentation can efficaciously perform differently modulated regulatory tasks. This is a process not necessarily oriented towards ameliorating the iconographic quality of the images, but rather towards consolidating and refining the languages, as well as achieving an enhanced awareness of the potential – and obviously also the limitations – of this type of disciplinary product.

Description: In the undulating plains of north-eastern Syria is the site of Tell Barri, identified with the city of Kahat. The archaeological sequence which has been brought to light stretches without interruption from the start of the third millennium up to the fourteenth century AD. This report illustrates the results of the twentieth excavation campaign, carried out by the group from the University of Florence and from the "Federico II" University of Naples. In Area G, the excavation of the chapel dating to the third millennium proceeded along with that of the palace of the Mid Assyrian King Adadnirari I; three coeval tombs were discovered, two with lavish furnishings. In Area J, the exploration of the Assyrian palace of Tukulti-Ninurta II was continued. As regards the Parthian phase, investigation has proceeded on the Great Defensive Wall in Area E and of the residential section in Area H. The text, prepared for printing in July 2005, was published following the tragic death of Paolo Emilio Pecorella, which took place on 29 August in Tell Barri in the course of the excavation campaign.

Description: In the history and archaeology of the Ancient Near East, the period between the end of the third and the beginning of the second millennium BC in northern Mesopotamia constitutes a 'Media Aetas', an obscure period between the flourishing of the urban cultures of the Ancient Bronze Age in the middle of the III millennium BC and the development of the Amorite states of the Middle Bronze Age at the end of the 19th century BC. The identification in the archaeological sequence of Tell Barri, the ancient city of Kahat, of the ceramic horizon coeval with the 'urban crisis' that preceded the diffusion of the painted ceramic of Khabur, associated with a new phenomenon of sedentarisation, makes it possible to redefine the chronology of events in the region. It aso enables a delineation of the processes of interaction between the various social realities of northern Mesopotamia in the phase of formation that underlies the subsequent cultural development of the II millennium BC.

Description: The urban evolution of Florence in the first thirteen centuries of its history is delineated here via a census of the archaeological finds, starting from those documented in the second half of the nineteenth century. The information has been organised and analysed through the use of Geographic Information Systems. The finds have been broken down by period and in terms of function, so as to describe, where possible, the evolution of the buildings and the public spaces and the changes in ways of living and approaches to burial, defence and production over the course of time. The Florentine data are considered within the regional and Italian framework mapped by archaeological research over the last few decades. Theme maps created using GIS further enhance the understanding of the text.

Description: Town planning entails the complex task of studying the habitat in its variegated aspects, with the objective of introducing functional transformations in response to the demands of the community. Since it is an experimental discipline, however, methods of approach and elaboration can be very different. This book represents the synthesis of the degree theses produced in the Department of Town and Territorial Planning of the University of Florence between 2000 and 2004, selected with a view to achieving a significant overview of the various issues and disciplinary areas. The volume thus addresses topical questions such as the protection of the historic identity, the rethinking of the modern city, obsolete areas and urban gaps, relational processes and spaces, sustainable development and planning, and the settlements of developing countries.

Description: Can today’s landscape become a living construct again, moved and shaped by a plurality of actors working for its maintenance with shared modalities? This text investigates the landscape’s role and its structural features in the governance of the territory, starting from Tuscany’s experience with landscape planning: this polyphonic, rich and multifaceted reflection is aimed at promoting the birth of communication tools and agreements, which not only strengthen the decision-making system from the bottom (in order to overcome the acknowledged detachment between plans, policies and common sentiment), but also open the way to the renewal of the consolidated structures of representative democracy.

Description: What are the cognitive and expressive choices involved in the concrete practices of creation of graphical representations of the territory? And what is the effectiveness of graphics in the government of the territory and its changes? These questions are the basis of the preparation of this work. The essay proposes and tests a hypothesis of representation of the "statute of places", that is, of an instrument regulating the transformations of the city and of the territory based on the recognition of common values, a little binding, but indicative for the determination of plans and projects.

Description: MUSINT is an interactive museological network devoted to the Tuscan archaeological collections which enables the creation of an innovative display itinerary through the collections of Aegean and Cypriot antiquities, so that exhibits originating from different museum institutions can be appreciated. This has led to the creation of a "museum of museums" which responds to the need to offer a display system that can be "visited" by a broad and variegated public. The arrangement of the book itself reflects the true nature of the MUSINT project and its character as a research worksite, enhanced by past experience, and a bridge for the appreciation of new perspectives within a scientific, technological and cultural universe that is open and in continual movement.

Description: The region crossed by the upper course of the Tigris River, in south-eastern Turkey, has long been an area little known from an archaeological point of view. The intensification of field research, starting from the nineties of the last century, has produced the evidence on which to base a first reconstruction of the history of the settlement and of the material culture of these territories, located between the high Anatolian-Eastern lands and the Mesopotamian plains. The results of the excavations and field surveys indicate that between the end of the Ancient Bronze Age and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age a process of transformation and reorganisation of the local communities matured. The appearance of large architectural complexes and buildings in medium-small sites, characterised by particular sets of objects and red-brown ceramics, could reveal the development of socio-political realities more structured than those of the previous period. Moreover, this could be an expression of the Khurrite world which, according to historical studies, would locate one of its main settlement areas in the Tigris region.

Description: This book analyses the dynamics of settlement and power in medieval Montalbano, for centuries a frontier area contested by competing powers. The architectural evidence, particularly religious, is investigated archaeologically as manifestations of power. Starting from the study of the technical knowledge of medieval master masons, the cultural, economic and political dynamics of an area to which the frontier gave centrality and supra-regional exchanges, especially during the 11th century, have been reconstructed. It is no coincidence that this centrality diminished from the following century when the growing influence of Pistoia’s municipality was matched by material standardisation. The contribution given to research and data analysis by the use, also experimental, of computer tools (3D, GIS) is also fundamental.

Description: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation.

Description: The present dissertation is concerned with the KIN oracle, a symbolic divination technique produced by the Hittite in the 2nd mill. B.C. and developed only in the Hittite cultural milieu. Like other omens of the Ancient Near East, the Hittite oracles were considered to be messages from the gods. The Hittite solicited omens included Extispicy, Augury, the Bed Oracle, the ḪURRI-Bird Oracle, the Snake Oracle, and the KIN Oracle. Although many studies have already explained how the different divination systems worked, the KIN oracle frame still remains difficult to understand in all of its features. In this research the KIN cuneiform sources and its oracular structure have been analyzed in all respects and enriched with tables, patterns, and pictures in order to better understand the work carried out. As far as the KIN is concerned, this research provides several different analytic implications both for Hittite and divination studies.

Description: The collection of Aegean exhibits in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence is of the greatest significance in terms of its richness and variety. The richness is illustrated by the quantity and value of the objects conserved, and the variety by a provenance and chronology of the artefacts that embrace pre-classical Aegean history practically in its entirety. This complete edition is organised on the basis of four main areas of provenance and production of the materials (Crete, Continental Greece, the Cyclades and Rhodes). The formation of the Florentine Aegean collections dates largely to the early twentieth century, and was the felicitous result of a combination of different circumstances. The most important of these was the commitment of Luigi Adriano Milani, Director of the nascent Royal Museum, to whom we owe the initial stimulus for a museum collection that could assume exemplary importance and respond to educational requirements. In Area G the levels of the first half of the III millennium BC and a sequence of strata of the Mitanni epoch were investigated, while on the western border of the site another section of the palace of Adad-nirari I was brought to light. In Area J the operations exposed the eastward extension of the palace structure resulting from transformations in the Neo-Babylonian period; in the northern section another courtyard of the palace of Tukulti Ninurta II was brought to light. The text, prepared for printing in July 2005, was published following the tragic death of Paolo Emilio Pecorella, which took place on 29 August in Tell Barri in the course of the excavation campaign.

Description: Akrothinia collects the contributions of twenty-three young scholars, with the aim of creating an overall picture of the lines of investigation and of the interests which, in recent years, have animated research in the field of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Aegean area, as seen from the perspective of 'pupils', not of 'masters'. The broad horizon of archaeological and philological themes, as well as the new insights which can be noticed in the works of this volume, clearly demonstrate the liveliness and, at the same time, the value of the tradition of Aegean studies in Italy. In this sense, the common thread linking all the contributions is, on one hand, the balance between the value recognized by the authors and the long tradition of Italian studies and, on the other, the positive interest in projects used as a test for the ability to identify new prospects for investigation.

Description: “L’agricoltura è la prima delle arti” was born from a project, from the conscious modification of a context, using knowledge which had been shared and accumulated over time. Contemporary agriculture, the daughter of the 'green revolution', of Fordism and its crisis, turned its back on the knowledge that agriculture was able to produce not only food, but also environmental protection and aesthetic quality. The texts collected in this volume are intended to encourage reflections and practices in the various areas of territory and landscape planning and design - on the university, political, technical, professional and administrative levels - which can lead the world of agriculture to regain a central role in outlining new relationships between inhabitants and territory. In these texts, the agricultural landscape represents an opportunity to produce a context where it is pleasant to live, with an approach far from the aesthetical drift of a 'picturesque’ and imaginary misunderstanding; an approach which is however careful towards a contextual aesthetic, arising within and from the rural world.

Description: In recent years, numerous reflections have pushed on the importance of using agricultural parks to recreate reciprocal relationships between urban and rural realities, through the enhancement of their proximity. The parks can also be an opportunity to experiment with new forms of planning on a territorial scale, oriented towards the construction of unitary and coherent morphological, functional and environmental scenarios. This volume offers a reflection on these issues by sharing the results of a design experience involving the School of Territory studies of Empoli (Degree in Urban and Territory Planning) and the School of territorial engineering of Clermont Ferrand (AgroParisTech ENGREF). The scenarios arising from the reflection synthesize these two approaches, integrating the interpretation of equities with the processes of diagnostic territorial and with the construction of shared territorialities.

Description: The introduction of the concept of structural invariant in territorial and urban planning has encountered numerous application problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate the reasons and formulate a new definition capable of overcoming them. At the center of the analysis is the relationship between crucial concepts in the interpretation of the territory: development sustainability, resource, space, place, place identity, status, spatio-temporal territorial structures, and structural invariants intended as an instrument to produce and reproduce the social and environmental identity and quality of the territory. The fulcrum is the organization and functioning of the territory, the spatio-temporal processes and the actors who created them. And from intangible, but objective values, it is necessary to take the moves: the real estate values and the values attributed by the different population groups, in terms of memory, attribution of meaning and identity.

Description: The territory is constantly being torn by thousands of conflicting interests and, as a common good, it is in growing need of a unitary planning, suitable for the people living, working and consuming in it: an amount of suitability including urban places, city networks, rivers, valleys, agricultural areas and coastal hinterlands. Compared to the architectural and urban project, the territorial project has much more episodic and sectoral disciplinary rules. This volume is the Tuscan outcome of a national research on the "territorial project", and provides the concept of urban bioregion as a methodology which can integrate analyses and projects on: the environmental prerequisites of the settlement, the reconfiguration of synergies between city and countryside, the polycentric rebalancing of urban systems, locally-based economic and energy systems, forms of self-government for local and self-sustainable development starting from the rules for the enhancement of the territory’s heritage.

Description: The central theme of this book is ecological and territorialist conversion as a strategic response to the crisis. 'The return to the territory' can be conceived as a valorisation of the common heritage of assets (environmental, urban fabric, landscape, socio-cultural) that mould the identity and lifestyles of every place on the earth. This calls for several issues to be addressed: the fusing of fragmented knowledge into a science of the territory that addresses the problems of socio-territorial and environmental decay in an integrated manner; the definition of new markers and policies of public welfare and happiness, including the landscape as a measure of the quality of peoples' life-worlds; the boosting of tools of local democracy and supportive federalism; the restoration of centrality to the rural world in the production of healthy food, hydro-geological protection measures, ecological reclamation, urban and landscape quality and integrated economies.

Description: The stories and interpretations of participation that make up this book are the result of research carried out during the drafting of the new law on participation, subsequently approved by the Tuscan Regional Authority (L.R. 69/07). The context is presented in two introductory essays that discuss some of the most relevant issues of participation This is followed by a section consisting of thirty-eight factsheets that critically address several of the Tuscan participatory experiences, broken down into five interpretational 'boxes': governance, decisional democracy, participatory planning, social self-organisation and conflict. Emerging from the cases analysed is a variegated landscape of experiences of interactive planning, with lights and shadows, significant results and difficulties, related primarily to the implementation phase of the projects. The authors seek to recount and valorise certain of the more original and innovative pioneering experiences, and to offer food for thought for the greater spread and enhanced efficacy of participatory practices, interactive planning and social self-organisation.

Description: Agricultural land and woodland in the vicinity of urban settlements appear increasingly to represent a key element and strategic resource for addressing issues of residential quality, and hence the requalification of the urban construct. In effect, from a "vacuum" awaiting construction, the periurban agricultural territory is emerging as the yardstick for a new measurement and integration of the public policies governing urban and territorial plans and those for rural development. This book proposes a number of cues and methodological and operational elements to stimulate reflection on this new scenario. It does so through the exploration of a number of significant and innovative experiences in Italy and the rest of Europe, while at the same time also proposing an initial appraisal of the process of design and social mobilisation for the definition of the scenario for the Prato Agricultural Park.

Description: After years of indiscriminate exploitation, the Anthropocene period is giving us back a nature whose reactions make the Earth less and less habitable: reversing the route has now become a urgent priority. The paradigm of ecosystem services is moving a step in the right direction in considering the multiplicity of benefits offered to mankind by the environment, but lends itself to quantitative drifts that risk extending commodification to the world of nature. This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services.

Description: Over recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the various possible forms of poverty and housing vulnerability: from the total lack of shelter of the homeless to the risk of losing their home that now threatens numerous families in medium-low income brackets. At the same time, the traditional linear and standardised housing policies appear no longer adequate to address these phenomena. This book contains the results of a study entrusted by the Tuscan Regional Authority to a working group from the University of Florence and the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci. The research explores the field of practices for self-production of housing in Italy and the world, through a critical selection of significant experiences, revealing the architectural and social creativity exploited in a large variety of collective actions. The book also contains a reconstruction of housing problems in Tuscany and an overview of alternative approaches to housing policy. The last section is devoted to the research-action on the occupation of the Luzzi, the abandoned sanatorium on the border between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino, a case that illustrates the most significant contradictions and dilemmas gravitating around the housing issue for the new poor: the problem of homeless immigrants; the difficulty of the authorities in managing problems of extreme housing poverty; the role of the associations and organisations of social mediation, and the inherent complexity of achieving a participatory approach to social and town planning research.

Description: The royal monastery of San Salvatore on Mount Amiata, which, according to tradition, was founded in the 8th century by the will of the Lombard kings near the papal lands, has been the focus of numerous researches in recent decades dedicated not only to some famous codices preserved for centuries in his library, but also to the documentary writings handed down in the Diplomatico, which collects documentation from the mid-eighth century. In this volume, the paleographic and diplomatic interpretation of the writings elaborated by the abbots and the Amiata monks intertwines with the reconstruction of the practices of power management, both in its local dimension and in that of relations with popes and emperors.

Description: Can archaeology be considered a factor of socio-economic development for civil society? This, in short, is the question underlying the first national workshop devoted to Public Archaeology (Archeologia Pubblica in Toscana: un progetto e una proposta, Aula Magna, 12 July 2010), organised by the Chair of Mediaeval Archaeology of the University of Florence with the collaboration of the Universities of Pisa and Siena. The meeting also provided the opportunity to communicate the socio-economic results of a case study of projects that the Tuscan universities have recently successfully developed in this sector, involving local authorities, museums, public and private enterprises in forms of active partnership. Public archaeology is seen as the updating of the original vocation of the discipline to address the contemporary, in terms of economics, governance, communication, identity of the archaeological assets and the respective social communities.

The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

Description: The text proposes several approaches for reflection on the subject of the governance of territorial consumption, addressing two critical issues: the dimensioning of planning and the concept of territory as a common good. The latter is understood as the outcome of cooperative behaviour and interactive practices aimed at recognition of the value of the places and the definition of rules of settlement for the protection of increasingly scarce collective resources. Exploring the relations between the limits of efficacy of the mechanisms for dimensioning the plans and responsibilities of the policies for governance of the territory – increasingly torn between public and private interests and not sufficiently "shared" - the book offers food for thought on the role of a "territorial-size" type of planning in the acknowledgement and management of the common goods.

Description: The book contains the philological edition of the corpus of Hittite texts currently collected under number 631 of the Catalogue des Textes Hittites by E. Laroche. They constitute the description of religious ceremonies celebrated in connection with the atmospheric phenomenon of thunder, interpreted as a manifestation of the god of the storm, which was the greatest divinity of the Hittite pantheon. The documents of major extension, presented with a transliteration and translation, are accompanied by a philological comment, aimed at highlighting their structure as well as lexical and grammatical peculiarities, and are introduced by an analysis of dating conducted on a palaeographic basis. The minor fragments are presented in transcription and, where possible, in translation. The text discusses the possible attribution of each fragment to the corpus, based on structure and content. The critical edition of the texts is preceded by an introductory chapter in which the nature of thunder-related festivities and their status in the Hittite cultural calendar are discussed.

Description: The purpose of the book is, on one hand, to try to trace a method and some working perspectives for post-growth planning, and on the other hand, to testify, through a concrete experience, the old and new questions and the interpretative and visionary effort that the territory poses to planning today. In a region like Apulia, which has followed an innovative path in the government of the territory and the landscape, the experience of knowledge and project for the city of Ugento is an opportunity to reflect on how today the construction of the plan can accompany the government of the territory in its development, rather than claiming to direct it, penetrate its policies and interact with its various instruments in a dynamic and even experimental way. In this way the construction of the plan can provide for a system of values to refer to in order to navigate the change and the design vision to be placed at the base of urban policies, tactics, individual interventions, thus coming to be a tool at the service of local development.

Description: A long eighteenth century - on the footsteps of the erudite tradition and of the Muratori’s publishing method - and a very short nineteenth century, enclosed between the first post-unification decade and the threshold of the Great War, when the advent of a new and professionalised generation of scholars (Bonelli, Vittani, Torelli, Manaresi) would also impose a radical change in Lombardy in the field of palaeographic-diplomatic research. These are the coordinates (of a conceptual rather than a chronological nature) of the book, which for the first time analyses a significant period of medieval history under a historiographic perspective and retraces the careers, projects, the initiatives of the individuals and institutions that have animated that epoch. The editors and the editions of medieval documents coming from Lombardy are at the heart of the publication, although wider perspectives and many protagonists whose fame goes beyond the borders of regional culture revolve around them. The process of defining a modern diplomatic philology in the editions of Lombard sources is followed, marking its salient stages and turning points. However, in the background stand out the broader (as well as stronger and ideologically connoted) themes of Medieval studies before and after the Unification of Italy. These are the issue of the Longobards, the myth of the Commune civilisation in the Risorgimento culture, the identity of the Visconti-Sforza state. Analysing the editors and the editions of medieval documents in Lombardy between the nineteenth and twentieth century means shedding a significant light on the very dynamics of the organisation of regional historical research. Such analysis moves within a lively debate offering scientific and cultural implications between the hegemonic Milanese centre and the sometimes riotous municipalisms of the many suburbs.

Description: Musint 2 is a text to be read, accompanying the new MUSINT II website, following and innovating the general features of the previous MUSINT. But, as the two on-line projects differ in both technical aspects and content while maintaining similar principles and purposes, so the new volume takes on a role that makes it a novelty more suited to the progress that characterises the archaeological disciplines under a scientific and didactic perspective. The division into three sections is still maintained. The first section contains a series of works directly related to the MUSINT II site. There is an increase in the number of presentations relating to technical and educational aspects, which are considered an innovation of the new site, compared with scientific contributions intended in a more traditional sense. The second section presents an array of significant works of virtual musealisation, specifically chosen from the most varied areas, and tries to underline their educational approach. The third section is developed in continuity with the previous edition, although it presents new features in the choice of the selected research works: in fact, it selects topics which were already proposed in their experimental phase, as well as new research that have been identified over the years through the wider knowledge on the possibilities of a digital and interactive museology.

Description: The so-called "monochromes" on marble are twelve paintings on marble slabs from the Roman age, mostly coming from Herculaneum, and are now preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and at the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. These paintings were included in several publications. Despite that, they continued to raise many questions and there was a lack of studies focusing entirely on them. Furthermore, it had barely been clarified that, despite the name "monochromes", these works are completely polychrome. By combining the archaeological data and the information obtained from the non-invasive archaeometrical analysis, it was possible to achieve brand new results, which allowed for a better understanding of some aspects of these works, such as their iconography, the used pigments used and the clients’ choices.

Description: By summarising some selected bachelor and master's degree theses, the volume offers an overview of the study activities conducted within the Degree courses in Planning of the University of Florence, Empoli Campus. The different sections constituting the work highlight a multi-scale and multidisciplinary work methodology, which feeds on an approach mainly based on the importance given to the value of places and of specific territorial contexts. The result is an original picture of contributions, representing a potentially innovative way for the comparison of territorial and urban studies with the various operational dilemmas which arise at the intersection between the drafting of policies, the construction of long-lasting territorial projects and the local development guidelines.

Description: The third volume of Florentia continues the periodic series of studies related to the education activities of the School of Specialization in Archaeology of the University of Florence. The selected studies are elaborations drawn from the best graduation dissertations written by students in recent years, according to criteria that favour the elements of greater thematic innovation and methodological solidity. The essays represent the fundamental specializations of the School: pre-protohistoric, orientalistic, “classical” (in its various components, Greco-Roman and Etruscan-Italic), medieval. The authors come from universities throughout the country: a variety that nevertheless reveals the cultural background characterising the Florentine Archaeological School, starting from the lesson of the renowned founders of the School, Paolo Emilio Pecorella and Luigi Beschi, to whose memory this volume is dedicated. The collaboration between professors (mostly young people) and students gives form to a community coordinated with the other Specialization Schools of the University dealing with territorial cultural heritage (Archaeology, History of Art, Architecture). The topics chosen are also projected into a public dimension, in relation to the main issues of the current civil society - from the social impact of the role of the militant archaeologist, to the contribution of the identity of a “public archaeology” in a society that rapidly changes among “new Italians” and a social use of culture, to the new role of archaeology - also in crisis contexts and not only international ones.

Description: Akrothinia 2 presents itself as a sequel to Akrothinia, which appeared three years ago in this same series, and aims at providing an overview of the research young scholars carried out in the field of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Aegean Sea area. Compared to the previous volume, there is the new inclusion of some essays by young foreign scholars, who have spent periods of study at Italian institutes during their preparation, thus creating an international link from the beginning of their scientific activity. It is now increasingly clear that Aegean studies, mainly focused on the two great Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, represent a junction point between the general pre-classical Mediterranean world and the subsequent Greek one.

Description: This study differs from the traditional approach to the history of Genoa in the Middle Ages, which is tied to the definition of the ianuensis mercator. On the contrary, it aims at showing aspects of the artisans’ life, and therefore at correcting an orientation which has excessively privileged a specific (albeit crucial) sector of the city society. Through a systematic survey of the very rich notary registers, the study traces a multifaceted profile of those belonging to Genoa’s trade categories in the 12th and 13th centuries. The first part of the research begins with a definition of the artisans’ identity through the analysis of the anthroponymic system, which is then used to illustrate the social and economic dynamics underlying the apprenticeship and wage work. The central part of the book, on the other hand, is dedicated to the commercial and financial tools available to artisans, and to their involvement in long-range trade. The family structure and the social relationships are defined on the basis of a large sample of skills, testaments and quarrels, and then followed by an analysis of the artisans’ role in land and real estate transactions. The final discussion focuses on the participation of artisans in the political life and in military activities.

Description: The volume collects the contributions of the 'study day’ held on June 16, 2010 at the University of Florence on Abbeys and medieval landscapes in Tuscany, that is, on the forms of the territory that have structured the ways of life in the countryside of our region for centuries. Today an infatuation is observed for that kind of landscape, which is confirmed by a lack of interest for its conservation or for transformations respectful of the rules that produced it. It is therefore appropriate to submit to the historic method a synthetic view of the medieval landscape, from the ancient premises to the economic reasons that led to the monastic and feudal forms, up to the appearance of a new structure appreciated for its useful beauty, in a persistent substratum of mysterious storytelling. Tuscany allows multiple evidence of what actually survives of the pervasive order established in the Middle Ages also for its exemplary literary and iconographic representations, both contemporary and of the medieval times.
