    Description: The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field’s disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.

Healing practices have often been linked to questions of knowledge, power, politics, and morals. The limits of acceptable healing have been contested by men and women, priests and doctors, elites and commoners, indigenous peoples and colonialists. Successful healers have sometimes been labeled as witches, quacks, or dangerous political agitators. The contributions in this volume concentrate on healing in global history with case studies about Finland, southern Asia and Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and North America. They discuss medical pluralism and consider the arguments for and against individual healers and different healing systems. The authors focus on the popularity of medical systems, the appropriation and adoption of healing practices in cross-cultural contexts, and the prohibition of certain forms of healing. "

    Description: The monograph La religiosità popolare in Val Canale: Il teschio lavato e avvolto nel panno (Popular piety in the Canale Valley: The skull that is washed and wrapped in cloth) is re-writed and updated version of Slovenian monograph Ljudska religioznost v Kanalski dolini: O umiti in v prt zaviti lobanji (2014). The book illustrates the festive year of Slovenes in the Canale Valley from the perspective of current ritualistic practices (still in use today). The identifying elements of the Slovenian linguistic community are recognizable in the implementation of various (popular) religious practices by the local population. The author presents the rituals (with selected prayer formulas), described as an integral part of their life by Slovenian-speaking informants - all of whom are indigenous, native people of the Canale Valley - that was described, from the point of view of experts in the fields (e.g. Kuret 1989) as typical of the Slovenian community in general.
    Description: Monografija prinaša pregled ljudskega obredja prebivalstva Kanalske doline, ki ga avtorica prepoznava kot pomemben identifikacijski element tamkajšnje slovenske jezikovne skupnosti. Posebna pozornost je namenjena še v začetku 21. stoletja živemu obrednemu »umivanju in zavijanju lobanje zadnjega pokopanega pokojnika«, o katerega razširjenosti med Slovenci so v preteklosti pisali že E. Gasparini (1952), M. Matičetov (1955) in H. Maister (1975), zapisi o prisotnosti tovrstnega obrednega umivanja v Srbiji in Makedoniji (E. Schneeweis 1935) pa namigujejo na morebitno vezanost obredja na širši južnoslovanski prostor. Gre za dopolnjeno različico slovenske monografije iz leta 2014.

    Description: Come il mondo ha cambiato i social media è il volume complessivo di comparazione dei risultati di un'ampia indagine etnografica, coordinata da Daniel Miller, dall'eloquente titolo "Why We Post". Nove ricercatori, incluso Miller, hanno trascorso 15 mesi sul campo, in diversi paesi del mondo (Italia del sud, Turchia sudorientale, due siti in Cina, area rurale e area industriale, Trinidad, Inghilterra, India del sud, Cile settentrionale e Brasile) a osservare e studiare, con un approccio etnografico, i modi in cui le persone usano i social media. È un fatto indiscutibile che i social sono entrati nella nostra vita con prepotenza, in modo capillare, per certi aspetti invasivo. Con un linguaggio fluido, talvolta anche colloquiale, il lettore è condotto all'interno di un ambito che gli sembra di conoscere, se non altro perché ne siamo tutti, più o meno, utenti, scoprendo però quanto di valori, di comportamenti culturalmente codificati, di 'polizia morale' ci sia dentro i social media. L'approccio qui presentato parte infatti da un'idea un po' diversa rispetto a quelle più diffuse, e avvalorata nel corso della ricerca: se è indubbio che i social media hanno cambiato il mondo, la questione più interessante riguarda però il modo in cui il mondo li ha cambiati.     Description: スマートフォンはいつも文字通り私たちの鼻先にあり、スマートフォンとは何かという疑問を持つことはなかなかありません。しかし、私たちは本当にスマートフォンを理解しているのでしょうか？より深く理解を掘り下げるために、11人の人類学者が16ヶ月間それぞれアフリカ、アジア、ヨーロッパ、南アメリカの各地域で暮らし、高齢者へのスマートフォンの普及について調査しました。この調査によって、スマートフォンは若者だけでなく、すべての世代が利用するテクノロジーであることが明らかになりました。 『グローバル・スマートフォン』は、独自の観点をそのグローバルな比較研究から提示します。スマートフォンは常に身近にあり、「絶え間なき機会主義（Perpetual Opportunism）」を満たすデバイスであるだけでなく、今や私たちの生活の場そのものにさえなっています。本著は、スマートフォンが単なる「アプリデバイス」以上のものであることを示し、人々が口にするスマートフォンへの意見と、実際にはどのようにスマートフォンを使用しているのか、その違いを探ります。 マートフォンは、私たち使用者が変容させることができるその程度において、未だかつてなく自由度の高いデバイスです。この自由さにより、スマートフォンには使用者個人の価値観が急速に反映されます。この価値観を理解するためには、各地域における民族的・文化的差異を考慮する必要があります。例えば、アル＝クドゥス（エルサレム）、ブラジル、そしてイタリアなど、各地域がたどる高齢化の軌跡の多様性に加えて、中国と日本のビジュアル・コミュニケーション、カメルーンとウガンダのモバイルマネー、チリとアイルランドの保健情報へのアクセスの仕方など、これらの差異を考察して初めて、スマートフォンとは何か、そしてスマートフォンがもたらす生活の変容を理解することができるのです。

    Description: Sl Se c’è una cosa che abbiamo sempre, letteralmente, sotto il naso, è lo smartphone. Ed è normale credere, dunque, che sappiamo cosa sia. Ma è davvero così? Per scoprirlo, 11 antropologi hanno trascorso 16 mesi in varie comunità in Africa, Asia, Europa e Sud America per osservare il modo in cui gli anziani utilizzano lo smartphone, e la loro ricerca ha rivelato che si tratta di una tecnologia rivolta a tutti, non solo ai giovani. Lo Smartphone Globale presenta i risultati frutto di questo progetto di ricerca comparativa di respiro globale. Gli smartphone sono diventati tanto un luogo in cui viviamo, quanto un dispositivo di ‘opportunismo perpetuo’ da cui non ci separiamo mai. Gli autori hanno dimostrato che lo smartphone è molto più di un ‘contenitore di app’, concentrandosi sulle differenze tra ciò che le persone dicono sugli smartphone e il modo in cui li usano. Nessun dispositivo aveva mai raggiunto un tale livello di ‘trasformabilità’ – trasformabilità che si concretizza nella capacità di assimilare rapidamente i nostri valori personali. Per poterlo comprendere, dunque, dobbiamo tener presente un’ampia gamma di sfumature nazionali e culturali, quali la comunicazione visiva in Cina e Giappone, i trasferimenti di denaro sotto forma di credito telefonico in Camerun e in Uganda, e l’accesso a informazioni mediche in Cina e Irlanda, oltre alle diverse traiettorie della terza età ad Al Quds, in Brasile e in Italia. Solo allora potremo sapere davvero cos’è uno smartphone e capire appieno l’impatto che ha sulla vita delle persone in tutto il mondo.

    Description: The report is the outcome of a research carried out in 2018 on minorities protection. The ethnographic study took place in four schools located in the areas where the Cimbrian and Mocheno linguistic communities traditionally reside. The report offers a picture both of virtuous practices that strengthen protection and of obstacles that slow down its full realization in a school that is, at the same time, a pedagogical program, a space for socialization and a place where many things happen. In line with applied anthropology, it provides institutional decisions with the support to bridge the gap between a regulatory level that requires “to do in support of minorities” and the operational level where schools factually meet minority pupils.

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: The monograph Shranli smo jih v bančah ('We saved them in chests') aims to present Slovenian clothing terminology in the Canale Valley (Slo. Kanalska dolina). It is the result of research conducted in cooperation with the Planika Kanalska dolina Slovenian cultural centre between 2003–2007 and in 2014. It has been formatted as a trilingual (English-German-Italian) concordance dictionary in which the most common collocations are presented alongside clothing terminology. The dictionary includes 657 entries and is based on approximately 1,400 audio extracts from around 16 hours of recording of guided conversations with five informants from Valbruna (Slo. Ovčja vas), Camporosso (Slo. Žabnice) and Uggoviza (Slo. Ukve). The dictionary’s introduction, containing a presentation of the research conducted, the structure of the dictionary entries and a list of abbreviations and acronyms, is accompanied by a transcription of the dialect text Oblačila naših dedkov in babic (Our grandparents’ clothing) by the main informant, Maria Moschitz, together with some photographic material. To make searching through the dictionary easier for users with expertise in several or other languages as well, we have provided lists of entries in which dialect words can be searched against Standard Slovenian, Italian and German, as well as reverse index.
    Description: Izsledki raziskave slovenskega oblačilnega izrazja v Kanalski dolini, ki je v sodelovanju s Slovenskim kulturnim središčem Planika Kanalska dolina potekala v letih 2003–2007, so v monografiji urejeni v trijezični (slovensko-italijansko-nemški) konkordančni izrazijski slovar. Začetna, slovensko-italijanska razdelka vsebujeta prepis narečnega besedila Oblačila naših dedkov in babic glavne informantke Marie Moschitz, obogaten s slikovnim gradivom, in slovarski uvod s predstavitvijo raziskave, prikazom sestave gesel ter seznamom kratic in krajšav. Slovar v celoti temelji na prepisih posnetkov narečnih besedil, urejenih v podatkovno zbirko. Lažje iskanje po slovarju (tudi več- in drugojezičnim uporabnikom) omogočajo knjižnoslovensko-narečni, italijansko-slovenskonarečni in nemško-slovenskonarečni seznam.

    Description: A gripping essay on the role that Italian intellectuals played in the organization and scheduling of Swiss public radio between the Fascist period and the so-called Anni di Piombo (Years of Lead). The book What was the role of Italian intellectuals in the history of Swiss radio broadcasting culture? And what images of Switzerland and Italy were conveyed between 1930 and 1980? Ever since it began in the 1930s, Italian-language Swiss radio, a national public service broadcaster addressed to a linguistic minority, drew from intellectual resources external to its own political borders, a characteristic that contributed to defining its profile. During the Fascist period, for example, Italian intellectuals could express themselves from the microphones of this radio with a freedom that they were not allowed in their home country: Benedetto Croce’s 1936 speech is a memorable case in point. Subse-quently, when the interview and debate formats tended to undermine that of the radio lecture, journalists and writers such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Eugenio Montale took advantage of the debating space that Swiss Italy offered them. By analysing the written and audio sources, many of which unpublished, Nelly Valsangiacomo’s essay reconstructs a complex as well as fascinating radio broadcasting panorama, brought to life by the voices of some of the greatest Italian intellectuals, such as Elio Vittorini, Maria Corti, Indro Montanelli, and Dario Fo.     Description: Qual è stato il ruolo degli intellettuali italiani nella storia della cultura radiofonica svizzera? E quali immagini della Svizzera e dell’Italia sono state veicolate tra il 1930 e il 1980? Fin dai suoi esordi negli anni Trenta, la Radio svizzera di lingua italiana, emittente nazionale di servizio pubblico rivolta a una minoranza linguistica, attinse a risorse intellettuali esterne alle proprie frontiere politiche, caratteristica che contribuì a definirne il profilo. Durante il ventennio fascista, ad esempio, gli intellettuali italiani poterono esprimersi ai microfoni di questa radio con una libertà che in Patria non si sarebbero concessi: memorabile in tal senso il discorso di Benedetto Croce del 1936. In seguito, quando le forme dell’intervista e del dibatti-to tenderanno a scalzare quella della conferenza radiofonica, saranno giornalisti e scrittori come Pier Paolo Pasolini o Eugenio Montale ad approfittare di quello spazio di confronto che la Svizzera italiana offriva loro.
