    Description: In the dry year 2018, newly planted trees died in many cities and communities in Germany. Also established and older tree populations in cities are exposed to growing stress, which is associated with heat, drought and pollution. These stress factors are often compounded by incorrect tree management. In the first part of the ESKP interview, Dr. Somidh Saha from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) calls for better tree registers to cover all urban trees.

Denn möglicherweise fällt dieser rettende natürliche Beitrag zur Speicherung von Kohlenstoff viel geringer aus als bisher angenommen. Besonders dann natürlich, wenn die Entwaldung weiter voranschreitet. Dies könnte die Erreichbarkeit des Zwei-Grad-Ziels deutlich erschweren und so den Klimawandel weiter voranschreiten lassen.     Description: In particular forests buffer the effects of climate change. Two new studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) examine this effect in detail. It is possible that indeed this saving natural contribution to carbon storage may be much lower than previously assumed. Especially when deforestation continues. This could make reaching the two-degree target significantly more difficult and further enhance climate change. Current climate models are thus subject to intense scrutiny.

    Description: Am 8. Oktober 2018 veröffentlichte der Weltklimarat IPCC seinen Sonderbericht zum 1,5-Grad Klimaziel im südkoreanischen Incheon. Der Bericht mahnt zur Eile. Um die Erderwärmung deutlich unter zwei Grad Celsius zu halten, sind alle gefordert: Regierungen, Wirtschaft und Bürger. In einem Interview des Forschungszentrums Jülich gibt Prof. Astrid Kiendler-Scharr eine Einschätzung des Berichts. Sie ist Leiterin am Institut für Energie- und Klimafolgenforschung (IEK-8) und hat als Gutachterin am IPCC-Sonderbericht mitgearbeitet. ESKP hat das Interview und die Ergebnisse des IPCC-Gutachtens zusammengefasst.
