    Description: Das 18. Jahrhundert war ein Jahrhundert des weltumspannenden politischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Wandels, der alte Herrschaftssysteme herausforderte und neuen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kräften in zwei Revolutionen zum Durchbruch verhalf. Die vorliegende Untersuchung thematisiert diesen Prozess am Beispiel der transatlantischen Beziehungen zwischen den Niederlanden und den nach Selbstständigkeit strebenden Kolonien in Amerika zwischen 1776 und 1782. Den amerikanischen Kolonisten ging es um zweierlei: einerseits um die völkerrechtliche Anerkennung ihres Abfalls vom englischen Königreich und andererseits um die finanzielle Unterstützung der amerikanischen Revolutionäre durch die anderen europäischen Staaten. Hierbei spielten die Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande diplomatisch und die Amsterdamer Finanzhäuser ökonomisch eine viel zu lang unterschätzte Rolle. In einer Nahbetrachtung der diplomatischen und finanztechnischen Aktionen der beteiligten Diplomaten, Politiker und Kaufleute und ihrer jeweiligen Einschätzungen durch Roland Richter wird die Komplexität des historischen Prozesses erkennbar und ein weiterführender Beitrag zur transatlantischen Niederlandeforschung geleistet.

    Description: From March 16-19, 2016, the Young Romance Studies Forum on "Center and Periphery" took place at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. In this volume, the dialectical concepts of center and periphery are examined from the perspectives of literary, linguistic, and cultural studies. Their relevance in Romania is examined in the individual contributions on the basis of geographical, spatial, historical, social, and linguistic aspects, in order to include different approaches and methods of analysis. In addition to a heterogeneous approach to the dimensions of the conceptual pair, the volume offers a structured presentation of the individual phenomena studied. The two thematic blocks focus, on the one hand, on diverse literary studies considerations of the dichotomy of the conceptual pair, and, on the other hand, on linguistic conceptions of center and periphery. Thus, new perspectives on both central and peripheral phenomena in Romance studies are opened up, on the one hand by presenting the range of (traditional) centers and peripheries, and on the other hand by referring to current discussions in the context of the two concepts.

Damit zeigt er auf, wie durch Spielorte legitimierter Überschreitung die Tauschökonomie jenseits von Moral und diesseits pathologischer Abgründe ausgetestet wird.

    Description: The story of how Max Warburg became head of the family-owned bankhouse, although his brother was supposed to take over the business, was often told: When he was 12 years old, the one year older Aby offered Max his birthright for the promise to buy all the books Aby would ever need. Max accepted,and - as he later said - issued "the biggest blank cheque in my life". The paths of life of the two brothers spilt into different directions. Aby built his library into a research institute. Max developed M. M. Warburg & Co., thus the bankhouse becoming one of the most important private banks in Germany. At Simultaneously, they both pursued another goal: the foundation of the university. The brothers were among the early donors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation (Hamburgische Wissenschaftliche Stiftung). It was all about "Hamburg's mental capacity" ("Hamburgs geistige Zahlungsfähigkeit").

Die Engelsfigur ist aber nicht bloß statisches Überbleibsel einer verlorenen Glaubensgewissheit. Vielmehr steht sie in einer produktiven Beziehung zu zentralen geschichtsphilosophischen, politischen und medienästhetischen Fragen der Zeit. Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

    Description: Dem niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag kam durch die weit ausgreifende Politik der Republik zwischen den westfälischen Friedensschlüssen und den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten des 18. Jahrhunderts eine Schlüsselstellung im europäischen Gesandtschaftswesen zu. In den Kriegen, die auf die Epochenwende 1648 und 1659/60 folgten, wurde nicht mehr wie in den vorhergehenden Religionskriegen um die Existenz gerungen, sondern um die Aufrechterhaltung oder Wiederherstellung einer gedachten Machtbalance. Daraus erwuchs den Gesandten eine neue Aufgabenfülle und politische Rolle. Das blieb nicht ohne Wirkung auf die Gesandten, die Veränderungen nicht nur ertrugen, sondern zunehmend selbst gestaltend eingriffen. Diese dynamischen Prozesse in der Arbeitsweise von Gesandten dreier Höfe am niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit. Indem aufgearbeitet wird, wie Den Haag von einem Treffpunkt von Gesandten zum Brennpunkt europäischer Diplomatie wurde, möchte die vorliegende Studie einen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Gesandtschaftswesens im frühneuzeitlichen Europa leisten.

    Description: ​Dieses Open-Access-Buch befasst sich mit der Einstellung der bayerischen Militärführung in Hinblick auf die Rezeption als auch Adaption technischer Innovation bzw. deren ersten praktischen Anwendung im Krieg von 1866. Das 19. Jahrhundert stellte das bayerische Königreich vor mehrere Herausforderungen. Die militärische Partizipation an den Napoleonischen Kriegen endete zwar erfolgreich, jedoch brachte sie beinahe die Zahlungsunfähigkeit des Staates mit sich. Obwohl die bayerische Streitmacht nach wie vor den großen Stolz des Landes darstellte, rückte sie fortan in den Fokus der Einsparungspolitik König Ludwigs I. Folglich waren die Mittel, welche der Armee zur Verfügung gestellt wurden, streng reguliert und reichten lediglich dafür aus, um die laufenden Kosten zu decken. Eine schleichende, degenerative Heeresentwicklung – sowohl auf personeller, als auch technischer Ebene – resultierte hieraus. Problematisch wurde diese Vernachlässigung, nachdem immer mehr europäische Streitmächte einen technischen Modernisierungsprozess begannen. Neue Waffensysteme wurden erprobt und eingeführt, die Nutzung der Eisenbahn zur Erhöhung der Mobilität diskutiert. Wie stand die bayerische Armeeführung diesen Entwicklungen gegenüber? Konnten bzw. durften derartige Prozesse einfach ignoriert werden?

Messianic figures of thought play an important role in the Jewish discourse of identity. Moreover, they are used productively in the creation of general theories in the realm of cultural studies (philosophy of language and history, theological-political thinking).     Description: Aus dem Beginenkonvent bei St. Jacobi in Hamburg sind 14 mittelniederdeutsche Handschriften überliefert, die einen einzigartigen Einblick in das religiöse Leben spätmittelalterlicher Frauen ermöglichen. Die Gebetbücher, zusammen mit Archivalien aus dem Konvent wie den Rechnungsbüchern der Meisterinnen oder Testamenten, weisen auf eine aktive Rolle des Konvents im spätmittelalterlichen Hamburg hin. Von ihrem religiösen Profil her fallen in den Hamburger Gebetbüchern insbesondere ordensübergreifende Einflüsse der Devotio moderna auf. Dies zeigt, dass diese Literatur unbedingt in einem geographisch und religiös weiteren Kontext zu lesen ist. Allein schon liturgische und materielle Ähnlichkeiten zu Traditionen norddeutscher Bistümer und Klöster, z.B. Klöstern der Lüneburger Heide, veranschaulichen, wie komplex die Vernetzung der religiösen Institutionen im Spätmittelalter war. Materiell gesehen führen die Hamburger Codices in die bislang wenig bekannte Buchkultur von semireligiosen Frauen ein.

Sie bezweckten die Erweiterung agrarischer Nutzflächen und trugen zur Intensivierung des Ackerbaus wie auch zur Entwicklung von Handel und Verkehr bei. Meliorationen gingen häufig mit Migrationen und neuen Siedlungsgründungen einher. Im Band wird deshalb neben agrarischer Expansion und Mobilität auch der Begriff "Kolonie" mit seinen unterschiedlichen Bedeutungsdimensionen wie Kolonialisierung, Kolonisierung und Kolonisation untersucht. Die Meliorationsbeispiele aus Mittel- und Ostmitteleuropa belegen die vielfache Verschränkung ökonomischer, demographischer, ökologischer und kultureller Fragen und zeigen neben dem zeittypischen Fortschrittsglauben – gerade auch aus heutiger Perspektive – lehrreiche Schattenseiten des Eingriffs des Menschen in die Natur.

The book shows by which ways, carriers and means the transfer of knowledge from Prussia to France took place at the end of the Ancien Régime and what function the reference to Prussia actually assumed within self-referential French discussions.

Um den Vorrang der französischen Monarchie im internationalen Staatensystem wiederherzustellen und das Land vor dem Bankrott zu retten, setzte eine intensive Diskussion über Reformideen ein. Die Selbstinszenierung Friedrichs II. weckte in der französischen Öffentlichkeit ein besonders lebhaftes Interesse für Preußen. Aber inwiefern konnte der als erfolgreich wahrgenommene preußische Staat als Modell in dieser Reformdebatte wirken? Die Studie zeigt, über welche Wege und Träger und mit welchen Mitteln in den letzten Jahrzehnten des Ancien Régime der Wissenstransfer von Preußen nach Frankreich stattfand. Die Grenzen dieses Wissenstransfers werden ebenso dargelegt wie die Funktion, die der Verweis auf Preußen innerhalb selbstreferenzieller Diskussionen um die »Regeneration« der französischen Monarchie tatsächlich eingenommen hat.

S’est alors engagée une discussion intensive sur des idées de réforme afin que soit restaurée la primauté de la monarchie française dans le système international des États et que le pays soit sauvé de la faillite. L’autopromotion de Frédéric II a suscité un intérêt particulièrement vif du public français pour la Prusse. Mais dans quelle mesure l’État prussien, perçu comme un modèle de réussite, pouvait-il servir de référence dans ce débat sur les réformes? Le livre nous montre par le biais de quels médiateurs et les moyens par lesquels le transfert de connaissances de la Prusse vers la France s’est opéré au cours des dernières décennies de l’Ancien Régime. Les limites de ce transfert y sont également expliquées, ainsi que la fonction que le renvoi à la Prusse a effectivement occupée au sein des discussions autoréférentielles sur la »régénération« de la monarchie française.

    Description: Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian "philosopher king" who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the "book printing anniversary" (Buchdruckjubiläum) found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the "Bilder-sal", a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife.
