Jahrhundert war ein Jahrhundert des weltumspannenden politischen, ökonomischen und sozialen Wandels, der alte Herrschaftssysteme herausforderte und neuen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Kräften in zwei Revolutionen zum Durchbruch verhalf. Die vorliegende Untersuchung thematisiert diesen Prozess am Beispiel der transatlantischen Beziehungen zwischen den Niederlanden und den nach Selbstständigkeit strebenden Kolonien in Amerika zwischen 1776 und 1782. Den amerikanischen Kolonisten ging es um zweierlei: einerseits um die völkerrechtliche Anerkennung ihres Abfalls vom englischen Königreich und andererseits um die finanzielle Unterstützung der amerikanischen Revolutionäre durch die anderen europäischen Staaten. Hierbei spielten die Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande diplomatisch und die Amsterdamer Finanzhäuser ökonomisch eine viel zu lang unterschätzte Rolle. In einer Nahbetrachtung der diplomatischen und finanztechnischen Aktionen der beteiligten Diplomaten, Politiker und Kaufleute und ihrer jeweiligen Einschätzungen durch Roland Richter wird die Komplexität des historischen Prozesses erkennbar und ein weiterführender Beitrag zur transatlantischen Niederlandeforschung geleistet.

    Description: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht Marco Lünich der Annahme verbreiteter Glaubensüberzeugungen von der Qualität und Wirkmächtigkeit von Big Data nach und analysiert die miteinander in Bezug stehenden gesellschaftlichen Überzeugungen von Erkenntnis- und Nutzengewinnen aus Big Data. Das Aufkommen der digitalen Gesellschaft ist eng verbunden mit wirkmächtigen Narrativen wie etwa der Informations- und Wissensgesellschaft. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch die Möglichkeit der weitreichenden Sammlung und Auswertung von großen digitalen Datenbeständen betont, den sogenannten Big Data. Hervorgehoben wird dabei die besondere Bedeutung von Big Data für die gesellschaftliche Erkenntnis- und Wissensproduktion und den hieraus gezogenen Nutzen. Daher wurde in der Literatur vielfach vermutet, dass sich die Überzeugung von den vermeintlichen Konsequenzen einer Quantifizierung der Welt und vor allem des Sozialen auch in den Köpfen der Menschen verfängt und hierdurch einstellungs- und handlungsrelevant wird. Dieser vermutete Zusammenhang wird im vorliegenden Buch in unterschiedlichen Forschungszusammenhängen des Einsatzes von Technologien Künstlicher Intelligenz empirisch geprüft.

    Description: From March 16-19, 2016, the Young Romance Studies Forum on "Center and Periphery" took place at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. In this volume, the dialectical concepts of center and periphery are examined from the perspectives of literary, linguistic, and cultural studies. Their relevance in Romania is examined in the individual contributions on the basis of geographical, spatial, historical, social, and linguistic aspects, in order to include different approaches and methods of analysis. In addition to a heterogeneous approach to the dimensions of the conceptual pair, the volume offers a structured presentation of the individual phenomena studied. The two thematic blocks focus, on the one hand, on diverse literary studies considerations of the dichotomy of the conceptual pair, and, on the other hand, on linguistic conceptions of center and periphery. Thus, new perspectives on both central and peripheral phenomena in Romance studies are opened up, on the one hand by presenting the range of (traditional) centers and peripheries, and on the other hand by referring to current discussions in the context of the two concepts.

    Description: Finnish Lapland is a historical borderland of Finnish and Sámi cultures. Such a region offers various social-political identifications for people to choose: people may see it possible to identify as Finnish, Laplanders, Lappish or Sámi, for instance. However, the choices have social and political limits, and some identifications are more contested than others. The book examines the processes of identifications in the middle parts of Lapland, just south of the region defined as Sámi homeland in Finland. While the study reveals differences and nuances in people’s thinking, it also shows that there is a recognizable sense of shared cultural specifity around the region. Lapland is conceptualized as an extraordinary place with unusual nature and history, characterized by particular livelihoods (such as reindeer herding) and lively cultural interaction. The book concludes that while Lapland is extraordinary as a historical dwelling region of indigenous Sámi, it may be politically significant to recognize it as a unique borderland of cultures with features of its own.

    Description: Die anhaltende Präsenz von Engeln in der Moderne wurde oft auf ein gesteigertes Trostbedürfnis zurückgeführt. Die Engelsfigur ist aber nicht bloß statisches Überbleibsel einer verlorenen Glaubensgewissheit. Vielmehr steht sie in einer produktiven Beziehung zu zentralen geschichtsphilosophischen, politischen und medienästhetischen Fragen der Zeit. Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

Um dem zu entgehen, sind die Akteure auf voneinander abgrenzbare Kontexte in ihrem Netzwerk angewiesen, in denen sie Anerkennung und Teilhabe generieren können. Wer in dieser Lage auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen ist, erfährt Armut als die Zerstörung seiner bzw. ihrer Identität als respektables Mitglied der Gesellschaft. Der Kampf gegen die Armut darf daher nicht gegen die Armen geführt werden, sondern muss ein Kampf um Orte und Gelegenheiten sein, an denen wir zeigen können, dass es (auch) auf uns ankommt. Es zeigt sich, dass materielle Knappheit in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Einbindung unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. Die Bewältigungschancen verschlechtern sich, je weniger Gelegenheitsstrukturen zur Erreichung von Anerkennung und Teilhabe den Befragten in ihrem sozial-räumlichen Umfeld zur Verfügung stehen.

Group-Talk ist die Feldbezeichnung für das wöchentliche Arbeitstreffen einer teilnehmend beobachteten Forschungsgruppe in der Computational Neuroscience (CNS). Dass (soziale) Wirklichkeit in Interaktionsprozessen erzeugt und institutionalisiert wird, ist eine aus der Wissenssoziologie bzw. dem Sozialkonstruktivismus bereits wohlbekannte Erkenntnis. Dass diese Erzeugung maßgeblich durch kommunikatives Handeln prozessiert wird, ist spätestens seit dem Kommunikativen Konstruktivismus bekannt. Zentral in vorliegender Analyse ist daher die spezifische Form des kommunikativen Handelns, das besondere Format, in dem die CNS, als relativ junger und interdisziplinärer Forschungskontext, von den disziplinär heterogenen Wissenschaftler/-innen im Feld, kommunikativ (re-)konstruiert wird. Die wissenssoziologische Gattungsanalyse dient dabei dazu, den reinen Situationalismus zu überschreiten und die soziologische Mikroanalyse (Handeln), vor dem Hintergrund einer fokussiert-ethnographischen Feldstudie, mit gesellschaftlichen Emergenzphänomenen auf Meso- und Makroebene zu verknüpfen. Erst diese systematische Verbindung des direkt beobachtbaren Wie der Kommunikation mit dem durch ethnographisches Wissen rekonstruierten Warum, überschreitet den Horizont reiner Beschreibung und führt in die Bereiche des soziologischen Verstehens und Erklärens.

Beleuchtet werden diesmal die revolutionären Erschütterungen der Jahre 1917 bis 1919, die in Deutschland zur Entstehung der Weimarer Republik und in Russland zur Gründung Sowjetrusslands führten. Historikerinnen und Historiker beider Länder untersuchen die Ereignisse jener Jahre in Deutschland und Russland als Beziehungs- und Verflechtungsgeschichte. Die Beiträge thematisieren neben politischen, sozialen, demografischen und sicherheitspolitischen Aspekten auch die Auswirkungen auf andere Länder und Regionen. Sie demonstrieren in vielfältiger Weise, wie eng die Verflechtungen zwischen den revolutionären Ereignissen in Deutschland und Russland tatsächlich waren.

    Description: Dem niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag kam durch die weit ausgreifende Politik der Republik zwischen den westfälischen Friedensschlüssen und den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten des 18. Jahrhunderts eine Schlüsselstellung im europäischen Gesandtschaftswesen zu. In den Kriegen, die auf die Epochenwende 1648 und 1659/60 folgten, wurde nicht mehr wie in den vorhergehenden Religionskriegen um die Existenz gerungen, sondern um die Aufrechterhaltung oder Wiederherstellung einer gedachten Machtbalance. Daraus erwuchs den Gesandten eine neue Aufgabenfülle und politische Rolle. Das blieb nicht ohne Wirkung auf die Gesandten, die Veränderungen nicht nur ertrugen, sondern zunehmend selbst gestaltend eingriffen. Diese dynamischen Prozesse in der Arbeitsweise von Gesandten dreier Höfe am niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit. Indem aufgearbeitet wird, wie Den Haag von einem Treffpunkt von Gesandten zum Brennpunkt europäischer Diplomatie wurde, möchte die vorliegende Studie einen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Gesandtschaftswesens im frühneuzeitlichen Europa leisten.

Angestoßen durch die Geschehnisse und Diskussionen in den USA beschäftigt Rassismus als mit der Polizei assoziiertes Problem auch hierzulande die öffentliche Debatte äußerst intensiv. Dabei wird offenbar, dass die Organisation Polizei in der diversen Gesellschaft vor besonderen Problemen und Herausforderungen steht, denen sie bislang nur in Ansätzen begegnet und wenig gewachsen zu sein scheint. Zugleich fehlt es im deutschen Kontext bisher an einem hinreichend breiten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisstand zu Rassismus in der Polizei. Vor diesem Hintergrund bietet der Band eine Grundlage für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, indem er den Forschungsstand aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammenführt und systematisch aufarbeitet. Die Beiträge können als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Forschung dienen, sollen aber auch eine Übersetzung der Befunde der Rassismusforschung in Richtung Polizei leisten.

Ergänzt wird der Band mit einer Aufstellung der Mitglieder der Kreisräte, der Stadträte der kreisfreien Städte, der Vorstände der Kreistage und der Stadtverordnetenversammlung (rund 2000 Personen im Personenindex). Eine Aufstellung der wichtigsten Verwaltungsstrukturen auf Landesebene hilft bei einem schnellen Einstieg und Überblick.

Hochbedeutsam sind stattdessen Leistungsethiken im Radius von Leistung-Lernen-Können und disziplinierte, kontextangemessene Selbsthervorbringung.

    Description: ​Dieses Open-Access-Buch befasst sich mit der Einstellung der bayerischen Militärführung in Hinblick auf die Rezeption als auch Adaption technischer Innovation bzw. deren ersten praktischen Anwendung im Krieg von 1866. Das 19. Jahrhundert stellte das bayerische Königreich vor mehrere Herausforderungen. Die militärische Partizipation an den Napoleonischen Kriegen endete zwar erfolgreich, jedoch brachte sie beinahe die Zahlungsunfähigkeit des Staates mit sich. Obwohl die bayerische Streitmacht nach wie vor den großen Stolz des Landes darstellte, rückte sie fortan in den Fokus der Einsparungspolitik König Ludwigs I. Folglich waren die Mittel, welche der Armee zur Verfügung gestellt wurden, streng reguliert und reichten lediglich dafür aus, um die laufenden Kosten zu decken. Eine schleichende, degenerative Heeresentwicklung – sowohl auf personeller, als auch technischer Ebene – resultierte hieraus. Problematisch wurde diese Vernachlässigung, nachdem immer mehr europäische Streitmächte einen technischen Modernisierungsprozess begannen. Neue Waffensysteme wurden erprobt und eingeführt, die Nutzung der Eisenbahn zur Erhöhung der Mobilität diskutiert. Wie stand die bayerische Armeeführung diesen Entwicklungen gegenüber? Konnten bzw. durften derartige Prozesse einfach ignoriert werden?

Denn entgegen der demokratischen Idealvorstellung von politischer Gleichheit ist die politische Beteiligung durch eine Selektivität gekennzeichnet, die sich systematisch entlang sozialer Statusvariablen ausformt. Unter Bezugnahme auf die strukturelle Komponente sozialen Kapitals stehen formelle und informelle Netzwerkkonstellationen im Fokus der Untersuchung, die im Rahmen kontrastierender Sozialräume analysiert werden. Dabei verbindet die Autorin sozialstrukturelle und rationale Handlungstheorien mit netzwerkorientierten und kontextuellen Erklärungsansätzen. Die empirischen Ergebnisse bestätigen den Wert sozialer Netzwerkelemente für die politische Partizipation und stützen eine Rückführung der politischen Passivität prekärer Wohnviertel auf ihr limitiertes Sozialkapitalvermögen. Damit erweist sich nicht die statusbedingte Ressourcenausstattung als partizipationsrelevant, sondern erst deren Überführung in Sozialkapital. Die Datengrundlage bildet eine quantitative Befragung in zwei Kölner Stadtteilen.

    Description: In the years 1738/39, Gottsched was mostly concerned with two events: his departure from the “Deutsche Gesellschaft” which he had been heading and the resulting developments, and the continuation of his disputes on the philosophy of Christian Wolff which he had been conducting with the Lutheran-Orthodox theologians. Through the support of the influential Imperial Count Ernst von Manteuffel, Gottsched now acquired strong political backing. This is documented by 52 of the total of 204 letters published in this volume, a correspondence in which Mrs Gottsched also soon became involved. The letters of other correspondents also deal with Wolff’s rationalist philosophy, as well as other very varied themes such as theater, teaching of the German language in schools, the problems of Leipzig students, newspaper polemics, planned translation projects and the competing editions of the writings of Martin Opitz, the “father of German poetry”, that were undertaken in Leipzig and Zurich.

Die entwickelte multimodale Dispositivanalyse wird im Rahmen einer qualitativ-empirischen Studie zu Drogentestpraktiken am Arbeitsplatz und im Straßenverkehr exemplarisch umgesetzt.     Description: This study investigates the function of the recourse to the messianic tradition of Judaism among German-Jewish intellectuals between 1900 and 1933 (Benjamin, Bloch, Broch, Buber, Landauer, Rosenzweig, Scholem). Messianic figures of thought play an important role in the Jewish discourse of identity. Moreover, they are used productively in the creation of general theories in the realm of cultural studies (philosophy of language and history, theological-political thinking). The messianic figures of speech include not only figures of thought but also rhetorical figures of speech or tropes that reflect various constellations of sacrality and secularity in the modern era.

Angelika Strobel analysiert die Auswirkungen dieser gesundheitspräventiven Maßnahmen auf die Verwaltungsapparate und die Bevölkerung. Am Beispiel der ländlichen Selbstverwaltung und der Eisenbahnbetriebe verdeutlicht sie die Praxis von Public Health in der Verwaltung des russischen Imperiums und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Geschichte von Verwaltungspraxis und Staatlichkeit in der europäischen Moderne.

    Description: Aus dem Beginenkonvent bei St. Jacobi in Hamburg sind 14 mittelniederdeutsche Handschriften überliefert, die einen einzigartigen Einblick in das religiöse Leben spätmittelalterlicher Frauen ermöglichen. Die Gebetbücher, zusammen mit Archivalien aus dem Konvent wie den Rechnungsbüchern der Meisterinnen oder Testamenten, weisen auf eine aktive Rolle des Konvents im spätmittelalterlichen Hamburg hin. Von ihrem religiösen Profil her fallen in den Hamburger Gebetbüchern insbesondere ordensübergreifende Einflüsse der Devotio moderna auf. Dies zeigt, dass diese Literatur unbedingt in einem geographisch und religiös weiteren Kontext zu lesen ist. Allein schon liturgische und materielle Ähnlichkeiten zu Traditionen norddeutscher Bistümer und Klöster, z.B. Klöstern der Lüneburger Heide, veranschaulichen, wie komplex die Vernetzung der religiösen Institutionen im Spätmittelalter war. Materiell gesehen führen die Hamburger Codices in die bislang wenig bekannte Buchkultur von semireligiosen Frauen ein.

Sie bezweckten die Erweiterung agrarischer Nutzflächen und trugen zur Intensivierung des Ackerbaus wie auch zur Entwicklung von Handel und Verkehr bei. Meliorationen gingen häufig mit Migrationen und neuen Siedlungsgründungen einher. Im Band wird deshalb neben agrarischer Expansion und Mobilität auch der Begriff "Kolonie" mit seinen unterschiedlichen Bedeutungsdimensionen wie Kolonialisierung, Kolonisierung und Kolonisation untersucht. Die Meliorationsbeispiele aus Mittel- und Ostmitteleuropa belegen die vielfache Verschränkung ökonomischer, demographischer, ökologischer und kultureller Fragen und zeigen neben dem zeittypischen Fortschrittsglauben – gerade auch aus heutiger Perspektive – lehrreiche Schattenseiten des Eingriffs des Menschen in die Natur.

Die Beiträger*innen zeigen Perspektiven auf, wie die Grundsicherung weitergedacht werden kann: Das bedeutet, bisherige Grundsicherungsleistungen zu analysieren, zu kritisieren und fortzuentwickeln, auch über den Rahmen des Sozialgesetzbuches hinaus - zu einer erweiterten Grundsicherung für das 21. Jahrhundert. Diskutiert wird dabei, welche Infrastrukturen und Angebote über Einkommenstransfers hinaus für eine Grundversorgung der Bevölkerung und eine inklusive Gesellschaft notwendig sind. Zugleich nimmt der Band die Grundsicherung auf europäischer Ebene in den Blick.

    Description: With the end of the Seven Years' War, a period of intensive search for reform ideas began in France an attempt to restore France's supremacy in the international state system and save the monarchy from bankruptcy. The particularly lively interest of the French public in Prussia raises the question of the extent to which Frederick II's state, which was regarded as successful, has served as a model in this reform debate. The book shows by which ways, carriers and means the transfer of knowledge from Prussia to France took place at the end of the Ancien Régime and what function the reference to Prussia actually assumed within self-referential French discussions.
    Description: Der Siebenjährige Krieg war eine Katastrophe für das Ansehen Frankreichs. Um den Vorrang der französischen Monarchie im internationalen Staatensystem wiederherzustellen und das Land vor dem Bankrott zu retten, setzte eine intensive Diskussion über Reformideen ein. Die Selbstinszenierung Friedrichs II. weckte in der französischen Öffentlichkeit ein besonders lebhaftes Interesse für Preußen. Aber inwiefern konnte der als erfolgreich wahrgenommene preußische Staat als Modell in dieser Reformdebatte wirken? Die Studie zeigt, über welche Wege und Träger und mit welchen Mitteln in den letzten Jahrzehnten des Ancien Régime der Wissenstransfer von Preußen nach Frankreich stattfand. Die Grenzen dieses Wissenstransfers werden ebenso dargelegt wie die Funktion, die der Verweis auf Preußen innerhalb selbstreferenzieller Diskussionen um die »Regeneration« der französischen Monarchie tatsächlich eingenommen hat.
    Description: La guerre de Sept Ans a été un désastre pour la renommée de la France. S’est alors engagée une discussion intensive sur des idées de réforme afin que soit restaurée la primauté de la monarchie française dans le système international des États et que le pays soit sauvé de la faillite. L’autopromotion de Frédéric II a suscité un intérêt particulièrement vif du public français pour la Prusse. Mais dans quelle mesure l’État prussien, perçu comme un modèle de réussite, pouvait-il servir de référence dans ce débat sur les réformes? Le livre nous montre par le biais de quels médiateurs et les moyens par lesquels le transfert de connaissances de la Prusse vers la France s’est opéré au cours des dernières décennies de l’Ancien Régime. Les limites de ce transfert y sont également expliquées, ainsi que la fonction que le renvoi à la Prusse a effectivement occupée au sein des discussions autoréférentielles sur la »régénération« de la monarchie française.

Er eröffnet so die Möglichkeit eines freien Lebensvollzuges der Muße in jedem Kontext - ein radikaler Entwurf, der von Heinrich Seuse, Johannes Tauler oder dem Buch von geistiger Armut aufgenommen und diskutiert wird.

    Description: 20 Jahre nach den NATO-Luftangriffen auf Serbien im Rahmen des Kosovokrieges eröffnet Elisa Satjukow den Blick auf die »andere Seite« dieser Intervention. Anhand bisher unerschlossener Dokumente fragt sie nach den Erfahrungen, Emotionen und Erinnerungen der serbischen Gesellschaft unter den Bedingungen von Bomben und Ausnahmezustand im Frühjahr 1999.     Description: Unter dem Schlagwort »ethnische Ökonomie« wird die berufliche Selbstständigkeit von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund in Politik und Wissenschaft diskutiert. Indem die Selbstständigen ihren »Markt machen«, positionieren sie sich mit dem und gegen diesen Diskurs. Robert Birnbauer zeigt aus einer wirtschaftsanthropologischen Perspektive, wie die Unternehmer*innen dabei ihre gesellschaftlichen Positionen und etablierte ökonomische Wissensbestände gleichermaßen verhandeln. Dazu folgt er dem Diskurs um »ethnische Ökonomie« von der politischen in die unternehmerische Praxis und zeigt: Geschäfte im Markt für muslimische Mode werden zum Resultat gesellschaftlicher Diskurse und der Markt zum Effekt beschreibbarer unternehmerischer Praxis - weit jenseits einer »unsichtbaren Hand«.
