    Description: On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Department of History at Kiel University, this volume presents 15 contributions that trace the scholarly impetus originating from the circle of Kiel historians for German-language historical research. The contributions do not only historicise the research itself but also provide an insight into the respective circumstances that influenced the search for knowledge, academia, backgrounds, networks and the impacts of research. Furthermore they discuss the political, social and sometimes precarious economic conditions at the institute. The essays are divided into four sections: firstly, the methods and disciplines at the department are addressed, followed by a focus on different regions. Thirdly, research areas that are specific to Kiel are presented and fourthly, forms and steps of the institutionalisation in the academic administration will be considered. In this manner the rich spectrum of the topics treated in Kiel then and now as well as the gathered competencies in their institutional and personnel contexts and developments are illustrated.

Sie historisieren das Forschen selbst und geben Einblick in die jeweiligen Umstände der Erkenntnissuche, den akademischen Betrieb, die Hintergründe, Netzwerke und Wirkungen von Forschung, aber auch die politischen oder bisweilen prekären wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse am Historischen Seminar. Die Beiträge gliedern sich in vier Sektionen, wobei die Artikel zuerst den Methoden und Disziplinen am Historischen Seminar gewidmet sind, daraufhin die regionalspezifischen Schwerpunkte behandelt werden, drittens besondere Kieler Fragestellungen sowie viertens Formen und Stufen der Institutionalisierung in akademischer Verwaltung im Fokus stehen. Auf diese Weise wird das reiche Spektrum der in Kiel einst und jetzt behandelten Themen und der versammelten Kompetenz in ihren institutionellen wie personellen Kontexten und Entwicklungen veranschaulicht.

    Description: Monuments have always been controversial. In recent decades, however, the debate about the interpretation and validity of monuments in public space has intensified, as their cultural practices of remembrance have been put to the test against the backdrop of a diverse society and related issues of (dis)power. The focus was and is primarily on monuments that are perceived as controversial, which were and are no longer treated only communicatively, but also performatively and interventively in the form of monumental changes. Questions about the effects of monuments and how to deal with them have been addressed primarily in the humanities and cultural studies. This interdisciplinary anthology aims to build on this and, in addition to historical, political or philosophical perspectives, also includes perspectives that broaden the discourse through contributions from law, theology and art studies. They put up for discussion their views on how to deal with controversial monuments in diverse societies.

    Description: Denkmäler waren schon immer Streitobjekte. In den letzten Jahrzehnten jedoch verschärften sich die Auseinandersetzung um Deutung und Geltung von Denkmälern im öffentlichen Raum. Ihre erinnerungskulturellen Praktiken wurden vor dem Hintergrund einer heterogenen Gesellschaft und entsprechenden (Ohn-)Machtsfragen auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Im Fokus standen und stehen dabei vor allem als strittig empfundene Denkmäler, mit denen nicht mehr nur kommunikativ, sondern in Form von Denkmalveränderungen auch performativ-eingreifend umgegangen wurde und wird. Fragen zur Wirkung von und zum Umgang mit Denkmälern wurden bislang vorwiegend in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften verhandelt. Der interdisziplinäre Sammelband möchte hieran anknüpfen und beinhaltet neben historischen, politischen oder philosophischen Perspektiven auch den Diskurs erweiternde Aspekte durch Beiträge aus der Rechtswissenschaft, der Theologie sowie der Kunstwissenschaft. Sie stellen ihre Sicht auf Fragen nach dem Umgang mit strittigen Denkmälern in heterogenen Gesellschaften zur Diskussion.

    Description: The province of Africa Proconsularis and especially the area of present-day Tunisia developed into the boom province of the Roman Empire during the Roman imperial period. The region experienced a tremendous economic boom from the 2nd century AD onwards. As the ›granary of Rome‹, the province supplied Rome with grain and olive oil. No other region in the empire was as densely urbanised as Roman Tunisia. Part of this boom was the production of extremely high-quality tableware, which was traded to all parts of the Mediterranean. With loans from Augsburg, Munich and Cologne, the exhibition is focusing on the manifold imagery of this tableware, which only developed as a result of the economic upswing. Unusual mythical images can be found alongside images of political representation and everyday life. The workshops in Roman Tunisia withstood all political, social, and cultural upheavals and produced elaborately decorated tableware until the 6th century AD. From the 4th century onwards, they also mediated between pagan and Christian imagery. North African tableware thus belongs to a central source of imagery for Late Antiquity and early Christianity.

    Description: Die Provinz Africa Proconsularis und besonders das Gebiet des heutigen Tunesiens entwickelten sich in der römischen Kaiserzeit zur Boom-Provinz des römischen Reiches. Ein gewaltiger wirtschaftlicher Aufschwung erfasste die Region ab dem 2. Jh. n. Chr. Als ›Kornkammer Roms‹ versorgte die Provinz Rom mit Getreide und auch mit Olivenöl. Kein Landstrich im Imperium war derart dicht urbanisiert wie das römische Tunesien. Teil dieses Aufschwungs war die Produktion eines äußerst qualitätvollen Tafelgeschirrs, das in alle Bereiche des Mittelmeers verhandelt wurde. Die Ausstellung widmet sich anhand von Leihgaben aus Augsburg, München und Köln der vielfältigen Bilderwelt dieses Tafelgeschirrs, die sich erst als Folge des ökonomischen Aufschwunges entwickelte. Ungewöhnliche Mythenbilder finden sich dabei neben Bildern politischer Repräsentation und der Lebenswelt. Die Werkstätten im römischen Tunesien trotzten allen politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Umbrüchen und produzierten ein aufwendig verziertes Geschirr bis ins 6. Jh. n. Chr. Ab dem 4. Jh. vermitteln sie zudem zwischen heidnischer und christlicher Bilderwelt. Das nordafrikanische Tafelgeschirr gehört damit zu einer zentralen Bildquelle für die Spätantike und das frühe Christentum.

    Description: The successful connection between content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge is considered a parameter for success in teacher education. In recent years, history didactics has also dealt intensively with the question of how the relationship between these three facets should be aligned for the various phases of history teacher education. However, one focus to date has been on the interplay between educational sciences and history didactics. This anthology, on the other hand, attempts to bring historical science and history didactics into a more intensive dialogue. To achieve this, various scholars specializing in modern and contemporary history contribute articles that are commented on by history didacticists. The volume covers various topics, including global history, but also the history of Northern and Eastern Europe or queer history. Likewise, a view into practical museum work is opened up. The resulting dialogue shows that the various subdisciplines of historical scholarship can benefit enormously from an exchange with each other.

    Description: Die gelingende Verzahnung von Fachwissenschaft, Fachdidaktik und Bildungswissenschaften gilt als ein Erfolgsparameter für die Lehrkräftebildung. Auch die Geschichtsdidaktik hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren intensiv mit der Frage beschäftigt, wie das Verhältnis dieser drei Facetten für die verschiedenen Phasen der Geschichtslehrkräftebildung ausgerichtet sein sollte. Ein Schwerpunkt lag allerdings bislang auf dem Zusammenspiel von Bildungswissenschaften und Geschichtsdidaktik. Der Sammelband unternimmt dagegen den Versuch, Fachwissenschaft und Fachdidaktik stärker in den Dialog zu bringen. Dazu tragen verschiedene Kolleg*innen aus der Fachwissenschaft mit einer Spezialisierung in der neueren und neuesten Geschichte Beiträge bei, die von Geschichtsdidaktiker*innen kommentiert werden. Der Band deckt dabei verschiedene Themenfelder ab, u.a. die Globalgeschichte, aber auch die Geschichte Nord- und Osteuropas oder Queer History. Ebenso wird ein Blick in die praktische Museumsarbeit eröffnet. Der so entstehende Dialog zeigt, dass die verschiedenen Subdisziplinen der Geschichtswissenschaft enorm von einem Austausch miteinander profitieren können.

    Description: The handbook by OpenRewi and FragDenStaat provides an easy-to-understand, practical overview of the IFG, the UIG and the VIG as well as the relevant laws of the German federal states. In view of the diversity of laws, the book deliberately does not take the form of a commentary, but instead focuses on central concepts of freedom of information law. The authors come partly from the legal sciences and partly from legal practice. The handbook is aimed at legal experts, but journalists and private individuals will also find initial assistance with their applications for access to information. The handbook works with various practical tips and example cases, with a focus on the evaluation of current case law. These and many other sources can be found in an interactive literature database that complements the handbook. The wealth of experience that FragDenStaat has accumulated over the past twelve years has been incorporated into the texts in a variety of ways.

    Description: Since near-death experiences (NDEs) are no longer a niche topic in the discourse of Western societies, but have already been and are being widely received and disseminated in the media, the potentials of scientific research on the topic are far from being exhausted. This may have something to do, not least, with the fact that dealing with NDEs challenges established understandings of science perhaps more than other topics. The present anthology therefore makes three proposals for a new perspective on the topic and for continuing the discussion that has already begun: It will ask about the negotiation of boundaries, about ›near-death experiences‹ as a scientific concept, and about the potentials of interdisciplinary work. For this purpose, contributions from different scientific disciplines such as religious studies, theology, sociology, and medicine will be gathered, each of them dealing with the topic from their own specific view.

    Description: Nachdem Nahtoderfahrungen (NTE) im Diskurs westlicher Gesellschaften inzwischen kein Nischenthema mehr sind, sondern bereits vielfach medial rezipiert und verbreitet wurden und werden, sind die Potentiale der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung des Themas noch bei Weitem nicht ausgeschöpft. Dies mag nicht zuletzt etwas damit zu tun haben, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit NTE vielleicht mehr als andere Themen etablierte Wissenschaftsverständnisse herausfordert. Der vorliegende Band macht daher drei Vorschläge zur Neuperspektivierung des Themas und zur Fortsetzung der begonnenen Diskussion: Gefragt werden soll nach der Aushandlung von Grenzen, nach ›Nahtoderfahrungen‹ als einem wissenschaftlichen Konzept und nach den Potentialen interdisziplinärer Arbeit. Hierzu werden Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen wie etwa der Religionswissenschaft, der Theologie, der Soziologie und der Medizin versammelt, die sich aus ihrer je fachspezifischen Sicht mit dem Thema auseinandersetzen.

    Description: The Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh region is populated mostly by ethnic Armenians. Cultural traces from over two millennia indicate their long history on site. Due to the armed conflict with Azerbaijan and the violent takeover of the Republic of Artsakh by the Azerbaijani government on September 20, 2023, these cultural assets are currently at massive risk. This volume documents an interdisciplinary conference that took place in Armenia in 2022. It offers the most complete trilingual overview to date on the history, culture and global contacts of this unshielded area in the Southern Caucasus.

    Description: An essential aspect of the fine ceramics of Greek antiquity is their decorative diversity. This book represents an attempt to make this diversity usable for archaeological purposes by means of computer-assisted procedures. The detailed comparison of combinations of different ceramic decorative elements at the Gulf of Corinth during the Early Iron Age explores - in combination with network-theoretical considerations - the possibilities that such methods can yield with regard to the observation of regional interaction patterns. The question is posed whether the waters between the Peloponnese and the mainland always had a connective significance, or whether there were phases in which maritime relations seem to have had less weight.

Dieses Buch stellt den Versuch dar, jene Vielfalt mittels computergestützter Verfahren für archäologische Zwecke nutzbar zu machen. Der detaillierte Vergleich von Kombinationen verschiedener keramischer Verzierungselemente am Golf von Korinth während der frühen Eisenzeit lotet - in Kombination mit netzwerktheoretischen Überlegungen - die Möglichkeiten aus, die derartige Methoden hinsichtlich der Beobachtung regionaler Interaktionsmuster zeitigen können. Dabei wird die Frage gestellt, ob die Gewässer zwischen Peloponnes und Festland immer eine konnektive Bedeutung besaßen, oder ob es Phasen gab, in denen maritime Beziehungen weniger Gewicht gehabt zu haben scheinen.

    Description: The Berlin architecture professor Friedrich Seeßelberg (1861-1956) was one of the leading protagonists of the ›voelkish‹ movement (Völkische Bewegung), which emphasized the special significance of race, people, tribe, landscape and language. In 1907 he founded the ›Werdandi-Bund. Bund für deutsche Würde und deutsches Wesen‹. Its goal was the ›renewal of Germanness‹ with the help of art. This study traces Seeßelberg's life, his scientific work, his academic teaching, his honorary activities, and his relationship to National Socialism. Seeßelberg's view of the key concepts of his work: ›people‹ and ›art‹ is also described in detail. This is the first attempt at a comprehensive examination of Friedrich Seeßelberg's personality and his oeuvre.

Bund für deutsche Würde und deutsches Wesen‹. Sein Ziel war die ›Erneuerung des Deutschtums‹ mit Hilfe der Kunst. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird Seeßelbergs Lebensgang, seinem wissenschaftlichen Werk, seiner akademischen Lehre, seinen ehrenamtlichen Tätigkeiten und seinem Verhältnis zum Nationalsozialismus nachgegangen. Eingehend beschrieben wird außerdem Seeßelbergs Sicht auf die Schlüsselbegriffe seines Wirkens: ›Volk‹ und ›Kunst‹. Versucht wird hiermit erstmals eine umfassende Betrachtung von Friedrich Seeßelbergs Persönlichkeit und seinem Gesamtwerk.
