Description: This collection of essays introduces a key thinker of the cultural studies‘ approach to the academic study of religion in the Germanic tradition. The authors explore the pioneering work of Burkhard Gladigow and a group of scholars in and around the University of Tübingen as a hub for these new developments. By explaining core concepts and their reception and by thinking them further in the light of current debates they demonstrate how the new constellation of questions and epistemological standards Gladigow has offered are relevant for the future of the study of religion across different academic cultures.

Description: The investigation of human-environment relationships is one of the focal points of settlement and landscape archaeology research. Prehistoric and early historical settlement dynamics between favorable and unfavorable areas raise a number of questions regarding the triggering factors for the development and perception or use of landscapes with different agrarian conditions. The present work focuses on a theoretical and methodological examination of this complex of topics within German-speaking prehistoric archaeology as well as an investigation of prehistoric and early historical settlement dynamics using a case study from southwest Germany. Based on an archaeological source criticism, changes in land use on the Baar and in adjacent natural areas of the south-eastern slopes of the Middle Black Forest and the Swabian Alb are recorded using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and discussed with findings from other study regions. The database comprises 1826 sites dating from the Palaeolithic to the end of the High Middle Ages and is supplemented by AMS radiocarbon dating of charcoal samples and OSL dating of sediment samples from colluvia. The synthesis of these archaeological and pedological data makes it possible to record the changing development and conceptualization of the Baar, the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. By considering theoretical approaches from anthropology and geography, alternative perspectives for the archaeological treatment of favorable and unfavorable areas are shown.

Description: Write your program! is an introduction to programming. The book is based on the practical experience of basic computer science courses at universities and the training of professional developers. The approach of the book differs radically from other introductions to programming and consistently relies on didactically proven and comprehensible methods. The authors have continuously improved the selection of material and presentation over many years. The material has also benefited from the fact that it has been used in numerous courses in Tübingen and elsewhere and the feedback from these courses has been incorporated into improvements. It also forms the basis for almost all Active Group GmbH training courses on the subject of "Functional Programming".

Description: Both individuals and social groups define themselves through a sense of very different affiliations, which are consciously emphasized or adapted depending on the situation. This complexity of identity realities and the use of identity as a social resource make it difficult to understand the affiliations of ancient actors. This has led to contradictions, simplifications and misclassifications, particularly in attempts to link findings and individuals with collective identities such as ethnic groups. The resulting mistaken identities in turn had and still have far-reaching consequences for the interpretation of archaeological finds. This volume discusses these difficulties on a theoretical and scientific-historical level and also presents concrete examples of specific material contexts that demonstrate the problems and limitations in dealing with the linking of objects and ethnic or cultural, political and religious identities. Last but not least, mistaken identities in the form of misattributions to the material basis are also addressed and the potential of scientific analytical methods in connection with identity discourses in archaeological contexts is put up for discussion. The contributions collected here were written following the international conference "Mistaken Identity", which was held at the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen from November 17-19, 2016.

Description: Wide-ranging contact networks ensure the dissemination and transfer of knowledge and goods as well as cultural values. The transport of loads and people can be seen as one of the most important cornerstones of such exchange systems. Therefore, the search for means of transportation and the development of suitable vehicles have probably been firmly anchored in human thought since time immemorial. The contributions presented here are based on the papers presented at the conference "Transports, Transport Routes and Transport Structures" of the Bronze Age Working Group and the Collaborative Research Center 1070 Resource Cultures. They not only summarize existing evidence on transport routes and vehicles as well as statements on infrastructure in the archaeological record of the Bronze Age, but also add numerous aspects worth knowing. What can these findings tell us about the transport vehicles and their significance? What characteristics did they have? Were the found objects worn out or deliberately destroyed vehicles or parts of such vehicles? Which implications on the technological and social level can be connected with the findings? How should we imagine the Bronze Age infrastructure in different regions? To what extent did traffic routes and exchange form a resource? This volume is dedicated to answering these questions in detail, resulting in an overarching synopsis of finds, features, and theories.

Description: This study examines the Late Viking Age burials at the cemetery of Havor, Hablingbo sn, on Gotland and in particular the way in which memories and ideas of the past on the one hand and cultural changes on the other were instrumentalized in the burials of Havor for the construction of specific identities. This approach, especially through the use of older burial traditions and the re-use of older burial sites, allows conclusions to be drawn about the perception of a mythical past in the Viking Age and about the discursive level of memories and traditions as social and identity-forming constructs. The theoretical starting point for this analysis is the reconceptualization of the concept of resources by the SFB 1070, which as an analytical tool enables a holistic perspective on the multidimensional network of perception and valorization of material and immaterial aspects.

Description: Current social and technological processes are overtaking many visions developed in classic 20th century science fiction at breathtaking speed; other elements of the genre remain 'alien' even today. In order to explore this tension, this volume looks at places that focus on this ambivalence: the heroes, thought and action patterns of science fiction. According to this guiding thesis of the volume, elements can be found in science fictional thinking that are relevant for the analysis and critique of current pedagogical conditions. The authors use science fiction to put a 'different' perspective on familiar educational discussions about schools, ageing and the concept of education, as well as their own disciplinary history, and thus to (re)think them.

Description: The post-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan is changing: new mosques are springing up all over the country, people are taking part in ritual Islamic prayers, and traditions that have been practiced up to now are changing. This book provides an ethnography that is unique in its breadth, explaining these and other changes as part of a growing religious infrastructure. Everything revolves around one resource: religious knowledge ilim. It focuses on the institutions and actors that have played a key role in the dissemination of religious knowledge since Kyrgyzstan's independence: Mosques, madrasas, religious foundations, imams and the transnational movement Tablighi Jamaat. The author sheds light on their institutional and social interdependencies and how they influence, shape and change the everyday lives of people in north-eastern Kyrgyzstan. The tension between normative theological interpretation and everyday practice shows how ilim becomes a moral resource for certain people in north-east Kyrgyzstan, which in turn causes socio-cultural change.
