    Beschreibung: Natural disasters are a challenge for human societies. The young German nation that reacted in the face of the 100-year Rhine flood (1882/83) can be characterized by the key elements of science, technology, economy, administration, and national consciousness. Given this framework the main actors used the disaster to expand their influence (e.g. scientific research) and to establish solidly relations. In sum, dealing with a natural disaster like the Rhine flood can only be understood in the opposing terms of risk and opportunity.
    Beschreibung: Katastrophen stellen eine Herausforderung für gesellschaftliches Handeln dar. Der Autor zeigt, auf welche Weise die politischen und wissenschaftlichen Strukturen des Deutschen Kaiserreiches dieser Herausforderung begegneten und sich im Sinne des Fortschrittsdenkens zu Nutze machten. Es wird deutlich, dass Naturkatastrophen wie das Jahrhunderthochwasser am Rhein für den jungen Nationalstaat nicht nur ein bedrohliches Risiko darstellten, sondern auch eine Chance für gesellschaftlichen Wandel. So stärkten sie das Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl und lieferten einen Anlass für regionale Entwicklungshilfeprogramme sowie wissenschaftliche Forschung.

    Beschreibung: Dieser Band vereinigt die Referate des am 9. Oktober 2006 veranstalteten 5. Göttinger Workshops zum Familienrecht, der die anstehende Reform des Unterhaltsrechts zum Gegenstand hatte. Neben einem grundlegenden Beitrag zur Konzeption und den Zielen der Reform (Gerhard Hohloch) und einem rechtsvergleichenden Beitrag zum französischen Scheidungsfolgenrecht (Thomas Gergen) finden sich in dem Band jeweils zwei Beiträge zu den drei wichtigsten Regelungsanliegen der Unterhaltsrechtsreform, namentlich zur Stärkung der Eigenverantwortung, zum Betreuungsunterhalt nach § 1615l BGB und zur Neuordnung der Rangverhältnisse. Alle drei Bereiche werden nicht nur aus der Perspektive des Gesetzgebers vorgestellt (Martin Menne, derzeit Referent für Unterhaltsrecht im Bundesministerium der Justiz), sondern auch von ausgewiesenen Kennern der Materie aus Justiz (Gerd Brudermüller), Wissenschaft (Tobias Helms) und Anwaltschaft (Hans-Joachim Boers) kritisch gewürdigt.     Beschreibung: Dieser Band dokumentiert die Vorträge des ersten „Familienrechtlichen Forums Göttingen“, das am 28. Juni 2008 stattgefunden hat. Unmittelbar vor dem Abschluss des Gesetzgebungsverfahrens erörterten Experten aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Praxis das im September 2009 in Kraft tretende „Gesetz über das Verfahren in Familiensachen und in den Angelegenheiten der freiwilligen Gerichtsbarkeit“ (FamFG). Der Band enthält einen Überblick über die Grundzüge des neuen Familienverfahrensrechts sowie Analysen und Stellungnahmen zu einzelnen Bereichen. Dabei werden schwerpunktmäßig das neue Rechtsmittel- und Vollstreckungssystem, das Hinwirken auf Einvernehmen, das Vermittlungsverfahren, der Verfahrensbeistand, der Umgangspfleger und das Verfahren bei Kindeswohlgefährdung behandelt. Darüber hinaus wird eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive durch die soziologische Einordnung der derzeitigen Reformen in den Kontext der allgemeinen Familien- und Sozialpolitik eröffnet.

    Beschreibung: The book "Synagogues in Göttingen: departures and ceasing of Jewish life," deals with the 700-year history of Jewish life in Göttingen and the various synagogues that have been existing since the beginning of the 14th Century.
    Beschreibung: Das Buch »Synagogen in Göttingen: Aufbrüche und Abbrüche jüdischen Lebens« behandelt die 700 Jahre währende Geschichte des jüdischen Lebens in Göttingen und der verschiedenen Synagogen, die sich seit Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts nachweisen lassen. Es beschäftigt sich zunächst mit der ersten urkundlichen Erwähnung eines jüdischen Bürgers aus dem Jahre 1289 und der »Synagoga Judaeorum«, die bis zur Judenverfolgung um 1350 in der Jüdenstraße bestand. Das zweite Kapitel befasst sich mit der »Judenschule« in der Speckstraße, die bis zum zweiten Abbruch jüdischen Lebens Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts für Gottesdienste genutzt wurde. Das dritte Kapitel widmet sich der Judenpolitik der damaligen Braunschweiger Herzöge sowie der Entstehung des jüdischen »Tempels« in einem Hinterhaus der Buchstraße (heute Prinzenstraße) zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die folgenden Kapitel beschreiben die Entstehung und spätere Erweiterung der neuen Synagoge an den Maschstraßen, die von 1872 bis 1938 den jüdischen Göttinger Bürgern als Gotteshaus diente. Das Buch berichtet im Folgenden von der Schändung und Zerstörung der Synagoge in der so genannten Reichskristallnacht am 9. November 1938. Im letzten Kapitel beschreibt der Autor den Neubeginn der jüdischen Gemeinde in Göttingen »im Schatten der Schoah« und den Aufbau einer neuen (alten) Synagoge neben dem jüdischen Gemeindezentrum in der Angerstraße.

    Beschreibung: Die moderne Medizin bringt es mit sich, dass Entscheidungen zur ärztlichen Behandlung sehr weit reichende Folgen für das Leben eines Patienten haben können. Die Patientenautonomie gebietet es daher, dass der Patient in solche ärztlichen Behandlungsentscheidungen einwilligt. Wenn ein volljähriger Mensch wegen Krankheit oder Behinderung nicht über sich selbst bestimmen kann, werden Entscheidungen durch einen rechtsgeschäftlichen oder gesetzlichen Vertreter getroffen. Oftmals sind dies die Angehörigen. Diese werden aber auch häufig zum mutmaßlichen Patientenwillen befragt, wenn sie nicht zum Vertreter bestellt sind oder im Notfall der Vertreter nicht befragt werden kann. In solchen Fällen entscheiden die Ärzte über das Ob und Wie der Behandlung. Diese Arbeit untersucht, ob das Selbstbestimmungsrecht des Einzelnen die künftige Etablierung einer generellen Vertretungsbefugnis von Familienangehörigen gebietet und auf welcher rechtlichen Grundlage dies geschehen könnte. Die detaillierte medizinrechtliche Analyse schließt mit einem Gesetzesvorschlag.

    Beschreibung: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.

Er beruht auf Beiträgen eines Seminars im Fach Geschichte der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, die von den Herausgeberinnen redigiert und durch ein Vorwort ergänzt wurden. In verschiedenen Archiven stießen die Studierenden auf zahlreiche bislang unveröffentlichte Quellen und analysierten diese mit Hilfe aktueller Forschungsansätze zur Alltagsgeschichte.
    Beschreibung: Göttingen after the end of the war in 1945 - How did everyday life after the war look from the perspective of the population and the old and new authorities? What forms and effects did the new political conditions, the refugees, the economy of scarcity, the housing shortage, the transformation of the educational sector, and which reorganizations of public and cultural life met with acceptance or rejection? This anthology explores these and other questions. It is based on contributions from a seminar in the history department of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, which were edited by the editors and supplemented by a foreword. In various archives, the students came across numerous previously unpublished sources and analyzed them with the help of current research approaches to everyday history.
