    Description: The design of approaches for future market-based energy network operation faces the technical challenge of needing to coordinate a vast number of network participants spatially and temporally, in order to balance energy supply and demand, while achieving secure network operation. To meet this challenge, the research field of transactive control emerged. Within this work a new transactive control approach for coupled electric power and district heating networks is presented.

    Description: The increasing use of automated laser welding processes causes high demands on process monitoring. This work demonstrates methods that use a camera mounted on the focussing optics to perform pre-, in-, and post-process monitoring of welding processes. The implementation uses machine learning methods. All algorithms consider the integration into industrial processes. These challenges include a small database, limited industrial manufacturing inference hardware, and user acceptance.

    Description: This work presents a real-time dynamic pricing framework for future electricity markets. Deduced by first-principles analysis of physical, economic, and communication constraints within the power system, the proposed feedback control mechanism ensures both closed-loop system stability and economic efficiency at any given time. The resulting price signals are able to incentivize competitive market participants to eliminate spatio-temporal shortages in power supply quickly and purposively.

    Description: A gyrotron is used in magnetically confined plasma experiments for heating, current drive, plasma stabilization and plasma diagnostics. This work presents the first design and construction of a multi-frequency / multi-purpose coaxial-cavity pre-prototype gyrotron operating at (136)/170/204 GHz with an output power of 2 MW. It is the first step towards operating frequencies up to 240 GHz using the coaxial-cavity gyrotron technology.

    Description: This book examines Gaussian processes in both model-based reinforcement learning (RL) and inference in nonlinear dynamic systems.First, we introduce PILCO, a fully Bayesian approach for efficient RL in continuous-valued state and action spaces when no expert knowledge is available. PILCO takes model uncertainties consistently into account during long-term planning to reduce model bias. Second, we propose principled algorithms for robust filtering and smoothing in GP dynamic systems.

    Description: A design process for HTS DC cables was developed for high current applications. Based on the design process, a 35 kA HTS DC cable demonstrator was developed. The superconducting elements of the demonstrator were manufactured and tested individually at 77 K. Afterwards, the demonstrator cable was assembled and tested at 77 K. The assembled demonstrator successfully reached 35 kA at 77 K and self field conditions.

    Description: To keep up with the ever-increasing data transmission speed needs, data center interconnects are scaling up to provide multi-Tbit/s connectivity. These links require a high number of WDM channels, while the associated transceivers should be compact and energy efficient. Scaling the number of channels, however, is still limited by the lack of adequate optical sources. In this book, we investigate novel chip-scale frequency comb generators as multi-wavelength light sources for Tbit/s WDM links.

    Description: Microwave-assisted alkaline hydrolysis of PET can be 20 times faster and at lower temperatures. This work presents a novel industrial microwave applicator at 2.45 GHz with homogeneous distribution to support this reaction, which allows an efficient and continuous operation. In addition, an innovative dielectric and calorimetric measurements setup is presented. Furthermore, the modelling of the reaction kinetics based on the measured dielectric parameters is presented.

    Description: This work presents the development and application of high-speed fluorescent thermal imaging for quench analysis in high-temperature superconductors (HTS). Using a fluorescent coating, with a temperature-dependent light emission, temperature changes can be calculated over 2D surfaces. The technique uncovered peculiar transient effects in novel HTS tape architectures and also helped to verify and better understand hot spot development in both insulated and non-insulated, HTS–wound pancake coils.

    Description: In this work, the task of wide-area indoor people detection in a network of depth sensors is examined. In particular, we investigate how the redundant and complementary multi-view information, including the temporal context, can be jointly leveraged to improve the detection performance. We recast the problem of multi-view people detection in overlapping depth images as an inverse problem and present a generative probabilistic framework to jointly exploit the temporal multi-view image evidence.

    Description: As the share of renewable generation increases in electric grids, the traditionally heat driven operation of combined heat and power plants (CHPs) reaches its limits. Thermal storage is required for a flexible operation of CHPs. This work proposes three novel methods to use a heating grid as thermal storage by exploiting its thermal dynamics. These include the first approach proving global optimality, a novel linear formulation of grid dynamics and an easily real world applicable approach.

    Description: During the evolvement of autonomous driving technology, obtaining reliable 3-D environmental information is an indispensable task in approaching safe driving. The operational behavior of automotive radars can be precisely evaluated in a virtual test environment by modeling its surrounding, specifically vulnerable road users (VRUs). Such a realistic model can be generated based on the radar cross section (RCS) and Doppler signatures of a VRU. Therefore, this work proposes a high-resolution RCS measurement technique to determine the relevant scattering points of different VRUs.

    Description: A waveguide-based sensor chip is demonstrated that is suitable for point-of-care applications. The biosensor is designed using a mathematical model to investigate the sensitivity of the waveguides. A new class of integrated laser sources for visible wavelengths is being investigated for the first time for light coupling into the waveguides. The functionality of the waveguide-based biosensor chip is successfully demonstrated by detection experiments.

    Description: The atrial substrate undergoes electrical and structural remodeling during atrial fibrillation. Detailed multiscale models were used to study the effect of structural remodeling induced at the cellular and tissue levels. Simulated electrograms were used to train a machine-learning algorithm to characterize the substrate. Also, wave propagation direction was tracked from unannotated electrograms. In conclusion, in silico experiments provide insight into electrograms' information of the substrate.

    Description: Effective heat transport systems in aerospace are based on multiphase loop heat pipes (LHPs). For a precise thermal control of the electronics, electrical heaters are additionally used to control the operating temperature of the LHP. This work focusses on the dynamical modeling and model-based control design for LHP-based heat transport systems. The results of this work can be used for the optimization of current control parameters and the efficient control design for future LHP applications.

    Description: In this work, spatio-spectrally coded multispectral light fields, as taken by a light field camera with a spectrally coded microlens array, are investigated. For the reconstruction of the coded light fields, two methods, one based on the principles of compressed sensing and one deep learning approach, are developed. Using novel synthetic as well as a real-world datasets, the proposed reconstruction approaches are evaluated in detail.

    Description: Major challenges in nanoparticle and nanocomposite development are the control of particle size and shape, and to achieve uniform particle dispersion. In this book, the application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for nanocomposite and nanoparticle characterization is investigated. Industrial requirements are robustness, small system cost and size, and an open path towards parallelization. We design and investigate silicon photonic integrated OCT systems that comply with these requirements.

    Description: The research reported in this thesis focuses on the decision making aspect of human-machine cooperation and reveals new insights from theoretical modeling to experimental evaluations: Two mathematical behavior models of two emancipated cooperation partners in a cooperative decision making process are introduced. The model-based automation designs are experimentally evaluated and thereby demonstrate their benefits compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

    Description: Hybrid perovskite photovoltaics could play a vital role in future’s renewable energy production. However, there are still severe challenges when scaling the technology. In this work, perovskite solution films drying in laminar and slot-jet air flows are investigated extensively by optical in situ characterization. The main results are a quantitative model of perovskite drying dynamics and a novel in situ imaging technique – yielding valuable predictions for large-scale perovskite fabrication.

    Description: Photonic integrated circuits (PIC) become increasingly important for numerous applications. Mass production of PIC has become widely available, but large-volume low-cost photonic packaging still represents a challenge. Additive micro-fabrication of free-form optical coupling structures is discussed as a concept to overcome this technology gap. Multi-photon 3D-lithography is used to fabricate dielectric waveguides ("photonic wire bonds", PWB) as well as facet-attached microlenses (FaML).

    Description: In this study the technical and economic feasibility of a 380 kV, 5 kA resistive type superconducting fault current limiter was investigated. Conceptual designs were developed with superconducting tapes cooled by liquid nitrogen and arranged in bifilar coils. A cryostat was designed using FEM simulations taking into account the non-linear voltage distribution. For the complete system including current limiting reactors and cooling system, the investment and operation costs were calculated.

    Description: This work is a contribution to understanding multi-object traffic scenes from video sequences. All data is provided by a camera system which is mounted on top of the autonomous driving platform AnnieWAY. The proposed probabilistic generative model reasons jointly about the 3D scene layout as well as the 3D location and orientation of objects in the scene. In particular, the scene topology, geometry as well as traffic activities are inferred from short video sequences.

    Description: This work aimed at designing, studying and producing the first prototypes of KIDs tailored for fusion plasma polarimetric diagnostics. Diamond was considered for the first time as substrate material for low-temperature superconducting detectors given its unmatched optical, radiation hardness and thermal qualities, properties necessary for working environments potentially saturated with radiation. This work represents a first step toward the optimization and final application of this technology.

    Description: In this work, the first simulation model of oxygen depolarized cathodes (ODC), which are silver catalyst-based gas diffusion electrodes, is presented that considers the phase equilibrium of the gas-liquid interface and structure-related inhomogeneities in electrolyte distribution. By means of the model it has been identified that mass transport of water and ions in the liquid phase is a crucial factor for electrode performance and how it is influenced by the electrode structure.

    Description: Novel THz device concepts and signal processing schemes are introduced and experimentally confirmed. Record-high data rates are achieved with a simple envelope detector at the receiver. Moreover, a THz communication system using an optoelectronic receiver and a photonic local oscillator is shown for the first time, and a new class of devices for THz transmitters and receivers is investigated which enables a monolithic co-integration of THz components with advanced silicon photonic circuits.

    Description: This work presents the development of a new sub-THz source for the generation of trains of coherent high-power ultra-short pulses at 263 GHz via passive mode-locking of two coupled helical gyro-TWTs. For the first time, it is shown that the operation of such passive mode-locked helical gyro-TWTs in the hard excitation regime is of particular importance to reach the optimal coherency of the generated pulses. This could be of particular interest for some new time-domain DNP-NMR methods.

    Description: This work presents three advances to scale SNSPDs from few-pixel devices to large detector arrays: atomic layer deposition for the fabrication of uniform superconducting niobium nitride films of few-nanometer thickness, a frequency-multiplexing scheme to operate multiple detectors with a reduced number of lines, and the integration of SNSPDs with free-form polymer structures to achieve efficient optical coupling onto the active area of the detectors.

    Description: This work introduces a new specification and verification approach for dynamic systems. The introduced approach is able to provide type II error free results by definition, i.e. there are no hidden faults in the verification result. The approach is based on Kaucher interval arithmetic to enclose the measurement in a bounded error sense. The developed methods are proven mathematically to provide a reliable verification for a wide class of safety critical systems.

    Description: An early detection and diagnosis of atrial fibrillation sets the course for timely intervention to prevent potentially occurring comorbidities. Electrocardiogram data resulting from electrophysiological cohort modeling and simulation can be a valuable data resource for improving automated atrial fibrillation risk stratification with machine learning techniques and thus, reduces the risk of stroke in affected patients.

The increasing demand can be met by modern imaging systems with advanced optics, such as light field cameras. This work explores their use in the deflectometric measurement of specular surfaces.     Description: Radar target simulators (RTSs) deceive a radar under test (RuT) by creating an artificial environment consisting of virtual radar targets. In this work, new techniques are presented that overcome the rasterization deficiency of current RTS systems and enable the generation of virtual targets at arbitrary high-precision positions. This allows for continuous movement of the targets and thus a more credible simulation environment.

    Description: This work presents model-based algorithmic approaches for interference-invariant time delay estimation, which are specifically suited for the estimation of small time delay differences with a necessary resolution well below the sampling time.
