    Description: Con motivo de la renovación de la flota del Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), surgió inmediatamente qué nombre se pondría al nuevo barco que se estaba construyendo en el Astillero Armón de Vigo, España, desde marzo de 2016. El nombre a un barco es como darle un nombre al hijo, donde los padres procuran homenajearlo con una designación significativa. En general los nombres de buques científicos se refieren a lugares geográficos, nombres en latín de organismos marinos interesantes y el nombre de algún investigador relacionado con las ciencias marinas a quien se desea recordar. En septiembre de 2016 la Dirección del INIDEP convocó a todo el personal para que propusieran posibles nombres para el nuevo barco. Posteriormente se hizo una votación sobre la lista presentada y resultó elegido el nombre "Víctor Angelescu". Las siguientes líneas se proponen mostrar quien fue el Dr. Víctor Angelescu a través de su actuación, sus trabajos, su personalidad y la opinión de quienes tuvimos el placer de conocerlo personalmente.

    Description: This edited volume explores a variety of aspects of associative governance, providing detailed case studies of associations and associational governance in Scandinavia. Theoretically developing a concept and approach of associative governance, the book sheds light on a dynamic way of perceiving associative aspects of community and commercial life that has been hitherto underexplored and undertheorized. It shows how governance by associations may be conducted not only bottom‑up by self‑organized and voluntary participation, but also top‑down by authoritative incorporation through government, and – not least – in multifarious interstices in between.     Description: What would an alternative to contemporary capitalism look like? In this book, Geert Reuten sets out a detailed design of a democratic society organised in worker cooperatives, followed by an equally detailed democratic transition to it, thereby making a convincing case. In Reuten’s design, Workers constitute the single economic class. However, unlike in capitalism, there is no class that owns the means of production. The legal structure of worker cooperatives is such that workers have full rights to the fruits of the cooperative without owning it, and yet the state does not own the cooperatives either. Interestingly, worker councils in the economic and state domains vote on all economically relevant matters. In Reuten’s work, the free choice of occupation and of specific consumer goods is even larger than in capitalism.

    Description: The Edition of the Minutes of the Cabinet Meetings of the first government of Leopold Figl is an important contribution to the history of the early years of Austria’s Second Republic and its political components after World War II. Vol. 13 encompasses meetings No. 132 of November 9, 1948 to No. 138 of December 21, 1948 as well as the accompanying minutes of the Wirtschaftliches Ministerkomitee. The discussions cover matters of foreign, domestic and economic policy, reconstruction and relations between the Austrian government and the four great powers. Particularly prominent are the pervasive problem of securing basic levels of nutrition for the Austrian population, the ongoing State Treaty negotiations and measures to carry out the European Recovery Program.

    Description: The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

    Description: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany’s relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies’ military inaction after Nazi Germany’s aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union’s claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

    Description: Since the 1970s, environmental issues have become a major concern for European citizens and thus for European politicians. In the same time frame the political sphere in Europe, and in particular within the European Union, has also been undergoing major transformations. Dealing with environmental issues over more than fifty years in a historical perspective enables us to gain a better understanding of these transformations, notably the emergence of a European public sphere and how this is changing decision-making processes. Drawing on recent research results from various disciplines, including history, sociology, law and political sciences, this volume addresses the methodological challenge of a European perspective on a transnational subject – one that is commonly distorted by a national prism. It shows how perceptions of the environment are increasingly converging and how these convergences of views across political or linguistic borders in the long run exert an undeniable influence not only on political debates but also on political decisions across Europe. Revealing European characteristics of perceptions, debates and policies, this volume contributes to a history of Europeanisation beyond the usual political turning points and limits.

    Description: After all the green beer has been poured and the ubiquitous shamrocks fade away, what does it mean to be Irish American besides St. Patrick’s Day? Who’s Your Paddy traces the evolution of “Irish” as a race-based identity in the U.S. from the 19th century to the present day. Exploring how the Irish have been and continue to be socialized around race, Jennifer Nugent Duffy argues that Irish identity must be understood within the context of generational tensions between different waves of Irish immigrants as well as the Irish community’s interaction with other racial minorities. Using historic and ethnographic research, Duffy sifts through the many racial, class, and gendered dimensions of Irish-American identity by examining three distinct Irish cohorts in Greater New York: assimilated descendants of nineteenth-century immigrants; “white flighters” who immigrated to postwar America and fled places like the Bronx for white suburbs like Yonkers in the 1960s and 1970s; and the newer, largely undocumented migrants who began to arrive in the 1990s. What results is a portrait of Irishness as a dynamic, complex force in the history of American racial consciousness, pertinent not only to contemporary immigration debates but also to the larger questions of what it means to belong, what it means to be American.

    Description: In der Arbeitswelt der DDR bestanden markante soziale Ungleichheiten, die sich mit der Vereinigung verschärften. Die Gesellschaft der DDR war stark über die Arbeit im Betrieb organisiert, die wesentlich zur »Vergesellschaftung« beitrug. Da Betriebe das soziale und materielle Leben organisierten, prägten sie auch soziale Ungleichheit, obwohl sich die DDR als egalitäre Gesellschaft verstand. Jessica Lindner-Elsner untersucht am Beispiel des VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, das den Wartburg baute, wie sich Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Ungleichheit wandelten. Dies zeigt sie für die Kernbelegschaften und vulnerable Arbeiter:innen wie etwa Strafgefangene, Menschen mit Behinderungen und Ausländer. Sie waren gegenüber Mitarbeiter:innen in Normalarbeitsverhältnissen benachteiligt. Deutlich wird zudem die Ungleichbehandlungen von Frauen, die aufgrund fortbestehender Rollenverteilungen weniger flexibel auf Arbeitsanforderungen regieren konnten. Die Autorin fragt, wie solche Benachteiligungen im planwirtschaftlichen System entstanden. Ebenso zeigt sie, wie sich die Muster sozialer Ungleichheit im Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft veränderten, als das Automobilwerk durch die Treuhandanstalt abgewickelt wurde und mit Opel in Eisenach ein neuer Hersteller übernahm.

Dabei kommt auch der Filmemacher selbst zu Wort.

Andreas Becker fokussiert auf die von den zentralen Akteuren verwendeten Vergleichspraktiken und stellt deren Produktivität als zentralen Mechanismus von Herrschaftsorganisation heraus. Dabei fasst er die dort entstehenden Beziehungen weder als einseitig-übermächtigend, noch zeichnet er Schweden als einen »guten Kolonisator«. Stattdessen hebt er die Notwendigkeit von Aushandlung in einer innereuropäischen kolonialen Kontaktzone hervor, die bisher nicht auf diese Art untersucht wurde.

    Description: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries.

Nicht nur beruflich, auch räumlich waren Handwerkerinnen und Handwerker überaus mobil. Der mikrohistorische Fokus auf eine offene Familienwirtschaft ermöglicht es, diese flexiblen handwerklichen Ökonomien zu erfassen. Der Beitrag von Nicole Stadelmanns Buch zur deutschsprachigen Handwerksforschung liegt in der Zusammenführung der zünftigen und außerzünftigen Produktion. Indem dabei die Arbeit der Frauen in der Produktionssphäre sichtbar wird, leistet die Studie auch wichtige Erkenntnisse zur Frauen- und Geschlechtergeschichte.

    Description: This book examines the politics of Banking Union and EMU reform in the EU, and draws lessons for what it means for international politics, both in Europe, and for international relations more broadly. It demonstrates that most of the reforms in Europe to break free of the Eurozone and banking crises in which Europe continues to find itself focus on building up the capacities of national authorities rather than European ones. The result is that national authorities remain largely in control of the decisions and funds that are to be deployed to prevent economic disaster if a single EU bank fails. The likely outcome is an accelerated balkanization of the European market for the foreseeable future. The book also contends that power politics, and realism in particular, is a defining feature of European politics with coercion and enforced national responsibility at the demand of Germany; the dominant form of institution-building that established the responsible sovereignty model, and shut down the possibility of alternatives. In making this case, the book demonstrates that the dominant view in international relations, that power politics best explains the behaviour of states, also apply to the EU. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of the Eurozone crisis, EU politics, economic policy, and more broadly to political economy, public policy and international relations.

    Description: Agency, Security and Governance of Small States examines what seems to be a defining paradox of Small-State Studies: the simultaneous coexistence (and possible co-dependence) of vulnerability and opportunity related to small-state size. This book analyses small states within the framework of this apparent paradox. Traditionally, Small-State Studies has focused on three guiding questions: what constitutes a ‘small state’? What explains small-state influence in global affairs? Are small states truly vulnerable to security threats given the expansion of multilateralism and regionalism throughout the world? This book contends that new questions should be asked which recognise the important shifts in twenty-first century security paradigms, to better understand how some states deploy their smallness as a resource for agency in supranational contexts. By varying historical, geographical, security, and governance contexts, the book embraces a most-different-cases approach. The historical perspective is often neglected in Small-State Studies but contributes to understanding how small states have often, over time, transformed perceived insecurity into agency. By focusing on different world regions, the authors enable the comparative analysis of collective actions, and the creation and implementation of institutions for ‘common sense purposes’ within a geographical region. Of particular contemporary importance, the book includes contributions which contend with hard-security issues alongside other soft-security challenges. The comparison of case studies confirms that hard-security vulnerability and soft-security opportunities seem to be two sides of the same coin, which reinforces the book’s focus on small-state paradoxes, and raises the question of whether smallness can be considered the defining characteristic of governance in these countries. This book will have a broad appeal because of the different world regions it analyses. It will be of interest to postgraduate students, scholars, and researchers of international relations, security, sustainability, governance, development, and political economy, as well as Small-State Studies.

Heute residiert hier die Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Von der Hansestadt aus entfaltete das Ehepaar eine rege mäzenatische Tätigkeit, in deren Zuge unter anderem Heime für Hilfsbedürftige etabliert und die Universitäten in Frankfurt und Hamburg unterstützt wurden. Vor allem Emma Budge trug zudem eine umfangreiche und hochkarätige Sammlung angewandter Kunst zusammen, die nach ihrem Tod in den Besitz der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg übergehen sollte. Doch dazu kam es nicht: Nach ihrem Tod musste die Sammlung von den Erben versteigert werden, und im Palais am Alsterufer richtete sich der nationalsozialistische »Reichsstatthalter« ein. Das philanthropische Lebenswerk war damit unwiederbringlich zerstört. Mit dieser ersten umfassenden Biographie aus der Feder Karen Michels` über das außergewöhnliche Ehepaar Budge wird es verdient gewürdigt. Emma (1852-1937) und Henry (1840-1928) Budge Jahrzehntelang lebten die Budges in New York, wo der aus Frankfurt stammende Henry Budge als erfolgreicher Banker und Eisenbahnfinanzier ein enormes Vermögen machte. 1903 kehrte er mit seiner Frau Emma nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Hamburg nieder, der Heimat seiner Gattin."

    Description: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

    Description: This book is a biography of Eisaku Satō (1901-75), who served as prime minister of Japan from 1964 to 1972, before Prime Minister Abe the longest uninterrupted premiership in Japanese history. The book focuses on Satō’s management of Japan’s relations with the United States and Japan’s neighbours in East Asia, where Satō worked to normalize relations with South Korea and China. It also covers domestic Japanese politics, particularly factional politics within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), where Satō, as the founder of what would become the largest LDP faction, was at the centre of LDP politics for decades. The book highlights Satō’s greatest achievement – the return of Okinawa from United States occupation - for which, together with the establishment of the non-nuclear principles, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the only Japanese to receive the Prize.

    Description: Challenging the posthumanist canon that celebrates the preeminence of matter, Ruth Miller, in Flourishing Thought contends that what nonhuman systems contribute to democracy is thought. Drawing on recent feminist theories of nonhuman life and politics, Miller shows that reproduction and flourishing are not antithetical to contemplation and sensitivity. After demonstrating that processes of life and processes of thought are indistinguishable, Miller finds that four menacing accumulations of matter and information—global surveillance, stored embryos, human clones, and reproductive trash—are politically productive rather than threats to democratic politics. As a consequence, she questions the usefulness of individual rights such as privacy and dignity, contests the value of the rational metaphysics underlying human-centered political participation, and reevaluates the gender relations that derive from this type of participation. Ultimately, in place of these human-centered structures, Miller posits a more meditative mode of democratic engagement. Miller’s argument has shattering implications for the debates over the proper use and disposal of embryonic tissue, alarms about data gathering by the state and corporations, and other major ethical, social, and security issues.

By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.

    Description: How did nobility try to live up to its exalted social position? With this volume, the Institut für niederrheinische Kulturgeschichte und Regionalentwicklung (InKuR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in cooperation with Gerd Dethlefs, has focused on the culture of nobility in the Lower Rhine-Westphalian region. The focus lies on the methods of conflict resolution within this social class in the Middle Ages and early modern period, from duels to court proceedings. Furthermore, an exhibition at the Ruhr Museum on the nobility in the Ruhr region, which was on display in the city of Essen in 2021/22, is presented. Other contributions are dealing with the Christian missionization of the Lower Rhine region and the siege of the city of Moers by Royal Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. A fundamental account of the relationship between the Dutch and German languages rounds off the volume.

    Description: Luxembourg is a prototypical small state and the only remaining example of over a two dozen of grand duchies in history. In this chapter the focus is laid on persistency and change of governance in security affairs, that is, the question of how a Luxembourg political entity overcame a variety of challenges of the (European) security environment until 1940. Indeed, to comprehend the ‘survival’ of the Grand Duchy in face of the vicissitudes of the military-political setting since the princedom’s creation by the Treaty of Vienna (1815), one needs to deploy the full array of the Small-State theory debate in security policy and in the politics of international relations: bandwagoning, balancing, freeriding, hedging, shelter-seeking. Based on this longue durée approach, the contribution expands on ‘extantism’ to reintroduce this concept to Small-State Studies.

    Description: Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practiced by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Nor are these practices static, as those involved exploit opportunities to adapt old features and develop new ones. The act of writing then has tangible and visible consequences not only for the writers but also for those encountering what has been produced, whether they can read its content or not – with potential for a wider social visibility that can in turn affect the success and longevity of the writing system itself. With a focus on the syllabic systems of the Bronze Age Aegean, this book attempts to bring together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing: from structuralist views of writing as systems of signs with their linguistic values, to archaeological and anthropological approaches to writing as a socially grounded practice. The main chapters focus on the concepts of script adoption and adaptation; different methods of logographic writing; and the vitality of writing traditions, with repercussions for the modern world. Contexts of and Relations between Early Writing Systems (CREWS) is a project funded by the European Research Council under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (grant agreement No. 677758), and based in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge.

    Description: Democratic Situations challenges researchers and students in Science & Technology Studies and related fields to treat democracy as an empirical phenomenon. This means leaving behind off-the-shelf theoretical notions of democracy that may have travelled into STS unexamined. The alternative strategy pursued in this volume is to pay as much analytical attention to the study of democratic politics as STS has previously offered to familiar topics of science and technology. This timely collection of empirical stories and conceptual inventions leads the way by showing how the making and doing of democracy can be placed at the centre of relational research. The book turns the well-known sites of contemporary Euro-American participatory democracy, such as elections, bureaucracies, public debate and citizen participation, into fluctuating democratic situations where supposedly untouchable democratic ideals are shaped, contested and warped in practice. The fact that Euro-American participatory democracy is often upheld as an ideal for the rest of the world makes it all the more important to study how it is a situated, distributed, material, emergent, heterogenous, fragile and at times faltering figure and project. Through situated analyses, the authors demonstrate that democracy cannot be reduced to theoretical ideals and schemes of conflict, institutions, or deliberation. Instead, the volume offers an urgently needed empirically driven renewal of our understanding of democratic politics in a time when conventional ideas increasingly fail to capture current events such as Brexit, Trump and Covid19. The twelve chapters are organised into three sections. The first part, entitled Interfaces of technodemocracy, focuses on how democratic politics is co-shaped by its interfaces with more or less rigid institutions and bureaucracies. The second section, Technosciences, democracy and situated enactments of participation, emphasises the relationships between science and public participation. The third part called Reconfigurations of democratic politics with new nonhuman actors focuses on the role of material objects, especially new digital technologies, in democratic politics.

By analyzing parliamentary asylum debates from Germany’s Asylum Compromise in 1992-1993 and the 2015-2016 refugee crisis, Julius Rogenhofer identifies representatives’ ability to project decisiveness as a crucial determinant for whether the rights and demands of irregular migrants were adequately considered in democratic decision-making. Both crisis situations showcase an emotive dimension to the parliamentary meaning-making process. As politicians confront fears of social and political disorder, they focus on appearing decisive in the eyes of the public and fellow representatives, even at the expense of human rights considerations and inclusive deliberation processes.     Description: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

    Description: Recently, a wall was built in eastern Germany. Made of steel and cement blocks, topped with razor barbed wire, and reinforced with video monitors and movement sensors, this wall was not put up to protect a prison or a military base, but rather to guard a three-day meeting of the finance ministers of the Group of Eight (G8). The wall manifested a level of security that is increasingly commonplace at meetings regarding the global economy. The authors of Shutting Down the Streets have directly observed and participated in more than 20 mass actions against global in North America and Europe, beginning with the watershed 1999 WTO meetings in Seattle and including the 2007 G8 protests in Heiligendamm. Shutting Down the Streets is the first book to conceptualize the social control of dissent in the era of alterglobalization. Based on direct observation of more than 20 global summits, the book demonstrates that social control is not only global, but also preemptive, and that it relegates dissent to the realm of criminality. The charge is insurrection, but the accused have no weapons. The authors document in detail how social control forecloses the spaces through which social movements nurture the development of dissent and effect disruptive challenges.

    Description: Adel und Armut - diese beiden Begriffe scheinen nicht zusammenzupassen. Wer an Adel in der Zeit des Kaiserreichs denkt, assoziiert zumeist Schlösser, weitläufigen Landbesitz, rauschende Bälle, auf denen elegante Damen in prächtigen Kleidern mit schneidigen Gardeoffizieren tanzen. Der Adel gilt als Elite- und zwar besonders für die Zeit vor 1914, die im Rückblick oft gleichsam als seine letzte Blütezeit erscheint. Dabei handelt es sich aber um ein unvollständiges Bild adliger Lebenswirklichkeiten im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Johanna M. Singer zeigt einen anderen Teil der Geschichte des Adels im Kaiserreich, einen Teil, der wenig bekannt ist, der fernab von mondänem Lebensstil und politischem Einfluss stattfand und der den scheinbar so offensichtlichen Zusammenhang von Adel und Elite konterkariert. Er führt uns in die Welt adliger Frauen, die in kleinen Etagenwohnungen lebten, sich kein Dienstpersonal leisten konnten, sondern vielmehr selbst 'in Stellung gehen' mussten. Armut im Adel war in der Zeit um 1900 eine soziale Realität, die insbesondere ledige Frauen und Witwen betraf. Ihre Geschichte wurde bisher noch nicht geschrieben. Die Autorin geht Ursachen, Ausprägungen und Bewältigungsstrategien weiblicher Armut im Adel nach und fragt nicht zuletzt danach, wie die Frauen selbst und ihre Familien, aber auch Standesgenossen und staatliche Stellen mit diesem Phänomen umgingen.

    Description: Das Leben Helmuth Plessners - Zeugnis einer Geistesgeschichte zwischen Exil und Remigration. Helmuth Plessner ist einer der interessantesten deutschen Intellektuellen des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der Weimarer Republik wies der Mitbegründer der philosophischen Anthropologie radikale Ideologien zurück. Als »Halbjude« 1933 von der Universität Köln entlassen, emigrierte er in die Niederlande und lehrte an der Universität Groningen, bis er 1943 von der deutschen Besatzungsmacht erneut relegiert wurde. Die letzten Kriegsjahre überlebte er im Untergrund. Nach dem Krieg erhielt er seine Groninger Professur zurück und nahm 1951 einen Ruf nach Göttingen an. Plessner wirkte entscheidend am Wiederaufbau der Philosophie an den deutschen Universitäten nach 1945 mit und gehört zu den Gründungsvätern der bundesdeutschen Soziologie. Bekannt wurde er vor allem mit seiner im Exil entstandenen Deutschlandstudie »Die verspätete Nation«. Carola Dietze legt die erste Biographie Helmuth Plessners vor, die auf Archivquellen basiert. Sie führt in Plessners Philosophie ein und analysiert, welchen Einfluß die Erfahrung der Emigration auf sein Denken hatte. Exemplarisch werden der Verlauf eines Wissenschaftsexils in den Niederlanden, die Gründe für eine Rückkehr nach Deutschland und die Situation eines Remigranten in der Bundesrepublik der fünfziger Jahre untersucht.

Decolonisation and the 'ecological turn' changed the religious power of interpretation and gave discourses about sacred mountains new meaning.     Description: Der mediterrane Raum gehört weltweit zu den Gebieten mit der höchsten seismischen Aktivität. Insbesondere Griechenland und die heutige Türkei, aber auch große Teile Italiens oder der Levante wurden und werden in regelmäßigen Abständen von Erdbeben heimgesucht, die nicht selten katastrophale Folgen haben. Diese Ereignisse wurden bereits in der antiken Literatur in vielfältiger Art und Weise reflektiert und gedeutet. Innerhalb der altertumswissenschaftlichen Forschung ist das Thema Erdbeben in den letzten Jahrzehnten zwar verschiedentlich aufgegriffen worden, doch konzentrierte man sich dabei auf einige wenige Aspekte: Im Vordergrund standen die Katalogisierung von Einzelfällen, die Aufbereitung antiker Erklärungsansätze sowie die Untersuchung des materiellen Bewältigungshandelns. Zu vertiefenden Analysen, die das Phänomen über die Jahrhunderte hinweg, in seiner breiten räumlichen Ausdehnung und unter Berücksichtigung der verschiedenen Zeugnisformen betrachten, ist es bisher nicht gekommen. An dieser Stelle setzt der vorliegende Sammelband an. Er fragt nach den Beziehungen zwischen dem Eintreten von extremen seismischen Ereignissen und zeitgenössischen Weltanschauungen, nach Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Rekonstruierbarkeit vergangener Bebenkatastrophen sowie nach den Modi ihrer literarischen Repräsentation. Zu diesem Zweck versammelt der Band Expertisen aus unterschiedlichen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (Geschichts- und Literaturwissenschaft, Archäologie, Epigraphik) und darüber hinaus (historische Seismologie, Sinologie).

Emil Artin zählt zu den maßgeblichen Mathematikern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Geboren 1898 in Wien, kam er 1922 nach Hamburg, wo er in seiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere mit bahnbrechenden Arbeiten wesentlich dazu beitrug, dass die Mathematik an der noch jungen Hamburgischen Universität Weltgeltung erlangte. Im Herbst 1937 verließ Artin wegen der NS-Diktatur und der jüdischen Herkunft seiner Ehefrau Natascha Deutschland. Zwei Jahrzehnte lang lebten sie mit den drei gemeinsamen Kindern in den USA. Artin wirkte als Professor an den Universitäten von Notre Dame, Bloomington und Princeton. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Emigranten kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und hatte von 1958 bis zu seinem frühen Tod im Dezember 1962 einen Lehrstuhl an seiner »alten« Universität Hamburg inne. Das Porträt zeigt Emil Artin nicht nur als brillanten Forscher, Lehrer und Vortragenden, sondern als vielseitig interessierten Menschen. Artin hatte eine ausgeprägte Neigung zur Musik, spielte mehrere Instrumente und bewegte sich in einem kreativen Freundeskreis aus bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern. Eine zweimonatige Reise nach Island im Jahr 1925 hielt er in einem Reisetagebuch sowie in Fotografien fest. Emil Artin (1898-1962) kam nach seinem Studium in Wien und Leipzig 1922 als Assistent an das Mathematische Seminar der Hamburgischen Universität, wo er innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Ordinarius aufstieg. Von der NS-Diktatur 1937 ins Exil vertrieben, war er zwei Jahrzehnte lang an amerikanischen Universitäten tätig, bevor er 1958 nach Hamburg zurückkehrte.

    Description: V západní Evropě sice volební volatilita za posledních třicet až čtyřicet let významně narostla, skutečnou explozi voličské nestability ovšem spojujeme se zeměmi bývalého komunistického bloku ve východní Evropě. Tato publikace se proto zaměřuje na výzkum volební volatility v 11 postkomunistických státech střední a východní Evropy od roku 1990 do roku 2020. Volební volatilitu studie chápe jako změnu voličské preference ve volbách jdoucích po sobě. Jelikož přechody voličů mezi stranami se odehrávají všemi různými směry, rozhodli se autoři zaměřit svou výzkumnou pozornost na ty, které považují v postkomunistickém kontextu za nejdůležitější v celkové sumě všech voličských přechodů. Zaprvé se jedná o hlasování pro nové strany a tedy přechody voličů k novým stranám. Zadruhé jsou vyčleněny přechody voličů od vládních stran. Oba procesy (ztráty vládních stran a zisky nových stran) podstatným způsobem přispívají k výši volební volatility. Celková úroveň agregované volební volatility dosahovala v postkomunistických státech průměrné hodnoty 31 procent. Agregovaná volatilita je měřena na základě změny v podpoře jednotlivých stran v po sobě jdoucích volbách a představuje nejnižší nutný podíl přechodů mezi stranami, který je nutný, aby mohly nastat reálné volební výsledky ve volbách jdoucích po sobě. Na individuální úrovni jsou přechody ještě četnější. Na základě analýzy individuálních dat z dotazníkových šetření autoři zjistili, že průměrná voličská volatilita dosahovala dokonce 44 procent. Téměř každý druhý volič změnil svou preferenci. Volatilita na individuální úrovni je tak mnohem vyšší, než potvrzují analýzy volebních výsledků. Jak měřit a zkoumat volební volatilitu? Proč vznikají nové strany? A co ovlivňuje jejich volební úspěšnost? Získávaly nové strany větší podporu v době po přechodu k demokracii nebo spíše v poslední době? Přispívají k volatilitě spíše vládní nebo opoziční strany? A nakolik je volební volatilita způsobena ztrátami vládních stran?

Brežnevs prägte ein Widerspruch: Auf der einen Seite wollte die politische Führung durch "Vertrauen in die Kader" und eine "Politik der Normalität" nach Nikita Chruščevs sprunghafter Politik eine neue Phase der Stabilität und Berechenbarkeit einläuten. In der Erinnerung vieler sowjetischer Bürger gilt die Brežnev-Ära darum rückblickend als "Goldenes Zeitalter" mit steigendem Lebensstandard. Auf der anderen Seite fand sich die sowjetische Gesellschaft in einer Phase beschleunigten sozialen Wandels wieder. Zeitgleich versagten Legitimationsmuster, ökonomische Steuerung und politische Entscheidungsfindung in einem solchen Maße, dass die Reformbedürftigkeit der sowjetischen Ordnung allzu deutlich wurde und sich Ende der 1970er Jahre eine Kommunikation über ihre Defizite und mögliche Alternativen etablierte. Die Antwort der Brežnev-Führung war eine noch stärkere Selbstvergewisserung: Für die eigene Stabilität und Normalität nahm sie ein eingeschränktes Sichtfeld in Kauf. Der Sammelband thematisiert die für die sowjetische Ordnung dieser Zeit prägende "Hyperstabilität" in Fallbeispielen zu Großprojekten, stadtplanerischen Projekten, Dissidenten, Künstlern und außenpolitischen Experten. Der Band fragt nach Spezifika der Brežnev-Ära, zeigt neue Forschungsperspektiven auf und setzt sich kritisch mit ihrer traditionellen Bewertung als "Zeitalter der Stagnation" auseinander. Seine Perspektive auf die Wechselverhältnisse von internen Prozessen und transnationaler Verflechtung leistet einen Beitrag zum neu erwachten Interesse an den 1970er Jahren als einer Periode tiefgreifenden sozialen Wandels in West und Ost.

    Description: Als Produzent für Regenmäntel wurde die Firma Rappolt & Söhne, die seit 1928 den Markennamen ERES trug, bekannt. Drei Generationen prägten die Unternehmensgeschichte. Der Name durfte bleiben, die Familie nicht. Das Hamburger Unternehmen Oppenheim & Rappolt wurde 1862 gegründet, firmierte seit 1897 unter dem Namen Rappolt & Söhne und existierte bis 1982 unter dem Markennahmen ERES. Gründer Joseph Rappolt (1835-1907) und danach seine Söhne Paul, Arthur und Franz leiteten die Geschicke der Firma, deren Sitz sich seit 1912 in der Mönckebergstraße 11 befand. Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg waren Regenmäntel das Hauptgeschäft, später ergänzten leichte und schwerere Stoffmäntel für Damen und Herren das Sortiment. 1938 mussten die Rappolts ihre Firma verkaufen, als Juden drohte ihnen die Deportation. Die meisten jüngeren Familienmitglieder konnten unter großen Schwierigkeiten aus Deutschland fliehen, die älteren wollten sich nicht zur rechtzeitigen Emigration entscheiden; einige von ihnen wählten den Freitod, andere wurden ermordet. Franz Rappolt (1870-1943) – der sich als angesehener Bürger ehrenamtlich in Vereinen und im Plenum der Hamburger Handelskammer engagierte, diese Tätigkeit jedoch 1933 unfreiwillig aufgeben musste – starb wie seine Schwägerin Johanna (1870-1942) in Theresienstadt, sein Bruder Paul (1863-1940) starb noch vor der Deportation. Das Rappolt-Haus in der Mönckebergstraße 11 und 13 prägt bis heute das Bild von Hamburgs bekanntester Einkaufsmeile. Das imposante Gebäude wurde im Auftrag der Firma Rappolt & Söhne errichtet. Nach 1933 mussten die beiden Firmeninhaber Franz und Paul Rappolt mit ihren Familien erleben, wie die Nationalsozialisten ihre erfolgreiche Arbeit torpedierten, sich Schritt für Schritt ihres Eigentums bemächtigten und sie zuletzt mit dem Tod bedrohten.

    Description: Over the last two decades, it has become clear that Russia insists on its great power status, even at considerable cost. Chasing Greatness provides an interpretive explanation of the tacit rules that shape Russia's great power identity today. Anatoly Reshetnikov argues that this never-ending chase for greatness is a result of how Russia and its predecessors—including the USSR, Russian Empire, Muscovy, and Kievan Rus’—historically interacted with its neighbors to the east, the south, and particularly the west. By analyzing an extensive amount of original source material, including primary sources that have not been previously translated into English, he is able to reconstruct a millennial history of the Russian concepts that express political greatness. He also traces numerous encounters between Russia and the West, as well as Russia’s troubled integration into the European society of states in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to show how these concepts have affected Russia’s interaction with international society. Despite its substantive historical depth, Chasing Greatness is not a book of history. Rather, it is a synthesizing social science work inspired by the continental tradition of the critical history of modernity. As such, the book is more about the present than about the past. Its main aim is to expose and explain the rich conceptual baggage behind Russia’s unceasing great power rhetoric (domestic and international) and how this rhetoric drives the current international crises involving Russia.

    Description: In Europe’s recent history, there have been several challenges to the strength of the European Union—Brexit, COVID, financial crises, and global tensions—bringing an increased need to understand the ways that the European Union (EU) could successfully stay together or fall apart. In examining how the European Union has changed since 1993, important puzzles have emerged, including how national government functions are transferred to the EU without reforming the EU, how increased transparency is announced while decisions are approved in informal meetings, and how the effects of the polarizing rise of Euroscepticism can be managed to still promote the formation of solidarity and trust among Europeans. To understand these puzzles, Thomas König introduces a new theory of (supra)national partyism to help explain the causes and consequences of choices made by political leaders for Europe. He uses a game-theoretical perspective to look at how conditions for leaders change through accessions of new members, shocks, and crises, and separates institutional choices into two different games played by office- and policy-seeking political leaders—the interstate summit game and the national game of party competition. The Dynamics of European Integration reveals how the reorganization of electoral systems can harness dissensus and polarization among diverse national constituencies to enable the promotion of solidarity and trust in the EU.

    Description: This book aims to rewrite the narrative of women and power in medieval society. Based on a rich corpus of sources – systematically collected for the first time – it reveals female monasteries as central and economically able agents in feudal society. With a chronological focus on the late Middle Ages, this book focuses on four powerful convents located in modern-day France, Germany, and Switzerland. Three of these institutions were aristocratic convents founded in the early Middle Ages. They were endowed with far-ranging feudal prerogatives that were largely, but not exclusively, derived from landed possessions. The fourth convent originated in the thirteenth century and disposed of a primarily monetary economy. Observed from a longue-durée perspective, Monastic Women and Secular Economy in Later Medieval Europe reveals strategies of adaptations that allowed these different institutions to weather the significant economic changes of the late Middle Ages. Within the context of medieval feudal society, these abbesses and prioresses were authoritative figures. They ruled over territories, dispensed justice, appointed priests, and even sent soldiers to war. Late medieval convents acted as urban landlords and gave credits – they were thus major economic players in the rising cities. These observations of this monograph will force medievalists to reconsider the traditional image of both the “male” feudal Middle Ages and medieval monetary economy.

    Description: This open access book investigates how representation of Native Americans and Mexican-origin im/migrants takes place in high school history textbooks. Manually analyzing text and images in United States textbooks from the 1950s to 2022, the book documents stories of White victory and domination over Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups that disproportionately fill educational curricula. While representation and accurate information of non-White perspectives improves over time, the same limited tropes tend to be recycled from one textbook to the next. Textual analysis is augmented by focus groups and interviews with BIPOC students in California high schools. Together, the data show how misrepresentation and absence of BIPOC perspectives in textbooks impact youth identity. This book argues for an innovative rethinking of US history curricula to consider which stories are told, and which perspectives are represented.

Cornelia Soldat untersucht diese Texte über Russland, die Teil eines groß angelegten Planes des Pfalzgrafen Georg Hans von Veldenz sind, die Herrschaftsverhältnisse im Baltikum grundlegend zu ändern. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Einschreibung Russlands in die Kolonialismus-Erzählung.

    Description: This chapter explores the role transnational networks and informal ties play for small-state-status seeking in Central and Eastern Europe. Using the example of Slovakia, I argue that since their accession to Western institutions, these states have continuously sought to carve out a place for themselves on the mental map of European and North American policymakers. Major security-policy conferences have become central nodal points for this kind of activity. They allow the foreign-policy establishment of small states to manage and shape existing status hierarchies by forging personal contacts with decision-makers from more powerful states. I illustrate this phenomenon empirically with reference to the Bratislava Global Security Forum (GLOBSEC), which began in 2005 as a student-led initiative and has since become the main outreach platform of Slovak foreign policymaking.

What is the role of civic virtues in public life? How does possessing civic virtues affect persons and their capacities for participation in the public order? The chapters in this volume combine philosophical and empirically informed work to show how civic virtues can be informed by larger virtue ethical perspectives. The first two chapters discuss virtues of individuals that have not received significant empirical attention—authenticity and wisdom and psychological resilience. The next two chapters address education and the ways in which civic virtues can help us to better serve schoolchildren who are socially and economically disadvantaged, as well as to broaden students’ horizons with respect to character and sustainability education.     Description: Im »pöbel« oder »pofel« erkannten die Gelehrten bereits in der Frühen Neuzeit eine große Gefahr für das Gemeinwesen: für die Ordnung des Staates, aber auch für die Konventionen der frühneuzeitlichen Gelehrtenrepublik selbst. Durch Mangel an Arbeitsfleiß und Bildungstrieb stört der Pöbel seitdem immer wieder die soziale Ordnung. Wer oder was aber ist dieser Pöbel, von dem auch die Gegenwart wieder zu berichten weiß? Wer nannte wen wann und aus welchem Grund »Pöbel«? Roman Widders Studie verbindet Sozial-, Protest- und Literaturgeschichte, um ein fundiertes historisches Verständnis des Pöbels als Verwerfung arbeitender Armut zu entwickeln. Gerade für die Dichtkunst war der Pöbel ein omnipräsentes Problem, weil sich in ihm die Prekarisierung des literarischen Lebens artikulierte. Verstanden als Sprechakt und figura - als Sozial- und Redefigur gleichermaßen - fällt die Rede vom Pöbel nämlich auf den Sprecher zurück. Die Exklusion der Ehrlosen aus dem literarischen Gewerbe zeugt deshalb keineswegs von der elitären Autonomie der Urteilenden; sie soll vielmehr den schwankenden Wert der eigenen Rede steigern und bringt so die materiellen Voraussetzungen publizistischer Rede zur Sprache. Der Pöbel als Figur der Poetik korrespondiert dabei in der Frühen Neuzeit mit verwandten Figuren wie dem Pickelhering in der Komödie und dem Pikaro im Roman. In Texten u.a. von Opitz, Gryphius und Grimmelshausen zeigt Widder, dass der Pöbel als Übersetzungsfigur zwischen symbolischem und ökonomischem Kapital zu deuten ist. Dabei rückt besonders die massive Geldentwertung der sogenannten Kipper- und Wipperzeit um 1620 in den Blick, denn bereits hier ist die Überschneidung politischer und literarischer Exklusionsbestrebungen exemplarisch greifbar. Im Zuge der Formierung der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts kommt die Entwertung arbeitender Armut (labouring poor) als »Pöbel« schließlich zur vollen Entfaltung.

Halter verschweigt nicht, wie sich der NS-Terror einer willfährigen Stadtverwaltung bediente und diese bis in die letzten Kriegstage den Arbeitseinsatz von Kriegsgefangenen und KZ-Häftlingen organisierte.Aufgrund des erstmals vorliegenden Quellenmaterials aus den Beständen des Stadtarchivs, darunter zahlreiche persönliche Notizen der beiden Bürgermeister und der übrigen städtischen Spitzenbeamten, gelingt Helmut Halter der Nachweis, dass die Stadt unterm Hakenkreuz weit weniger von Staat und Partei gelenkt wurde, als man bisher angenommen hatte.

    Description: During the early nineteenth century, schools for the deaf appeared in the United States for the first time. These schools were committed to the use of the sign language to educate deaf students. Manual education made the growth of the deaf community possible, for it gathered deaf people together in sizable numbers for the first time in American history. It also fueled the emergence of Deaf culture, as the schools became agents of cultural transformations. Just as the Deaf community began to be recognized as a minority culture, in the 1850s, a powerful movement arose to undo it, namely oral education. Advocates of oral education, deeply influenced by the writings of public school pioneer Horace Mann, argued that deaf students should stop signing and should start speaking in the hope that the Deaf community would be abandoned, and its language and culture would vanish. In this revisionist history, Words Made Flesh explores the educational battles of the nineteenth century from both hearing and deaf points of view. It places the growth of the Deaf community at the heart of the story of deaf education and explains how the unexpected emergence of Deafness provoked the pedagogical battles that dominated the field of deaf education in the nineteenth century, and still reverberate today.

    Description: The coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021 abruptly reversed a decade-long flirtation with economic and political freedoms. The country has since descended into civil war, the people have been plunged back into conflict and poverty, and the state is again characterised by fragility and human insecurity. As the Myanmar people oppose the regime and fight for their rights, the international community must find ways to act in solidarity. There is an urgent need for new policy settings and for practical engagement with local partners and recipient groups. The contributors to After the Coup offer timely insights into ways international actors can try to reduce the suffering of millions of citizens who are again being held hostage by a brutal and self-serving regime. Chapters analyse topics including coercive statecraft, international justice, Rakhine State (Rohingya) dynamics, pandemic weaponisation, higher education, non-state welfare and aid delivery, activism from exile, self-determination and power sharing in the National Unity Government's alternative constitution, and the roles of China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
