    Description: This collection advocates languages-based, translational research to be part of the partnerships and collaborations required to make sense of, and respond to, COVID-19 as one of the major global challenges of our time.　Bringing together scholars and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, this volume is bound by a common thread stressing the importance of linguistic sensitivity, (inter)cultural knowledge and translational mediation in the frontline response to COVID-19.     Description: “Attention” is a primordial topic throughout Goffman’s work. Already his dissertation thesis (1953) includes a separate chapter on “the organization of attention”. In his later studies he developed various concepts related to attention, such as focused/unfocused interaction or “civil inattention”. Although attention is evidently a crucial dimension of the interactional order, Goffman did not elaborate this topic systematically. The study of attention was later refined and enriched by conversation analysts who underlined the role of visual displays of attentiveness in social interaction. Against the backdrop of the notion of “focused interaction”, this paper examines how the psychological approach to “joint attention” differs from or amplifies Goffman’s studies. Based on some of Cartier-Bresson’s photos, it is shown that the contrasting set of focused/unfocused interaction needs to be supplemented by a third type of attention order, in which members are collectively oriented to an outward event. After a discussion of some of the practices of sustaining and re-establishing a focus of attention, empirical evidence is provided that certain interactional purposes can be achieved by displaying inattention. In the final discussion of Goffman’s concept of “civil inattention”, some historical and sociological dimensions are pointed out along which this concept can be further studied.

Yet few questions have been asked about the ways in which West Germans have "forgotten," unlearned, or reconstructed the racial beliefs at the core of the Nazi state in order to build a democratic society.     Description: This chapter studies the ways in which family members draw on their mediational repertoires to interact with one another near and far in the light of theories of translocality (Conradson & McKay 2007, Kytölä 2016), family discourse practices (Tannen et al. 2007) and language and emotions (Pavlenko 2004, Dewaele 2010). Through the analysis of digital power and connection manoeuvres (cf. Kendall 2006, Tannen 2006, Tannen et al. 2007) and morality practices (Ochs & Kremer-Sadlik 2007), the chapter shows how their interactional practices differ between local and transnational digital connectivity as well as between regular and occasional family contacts. The expressions of affection in these mediated interactions are examined to identify how they differ by the various types of local to global connectivity in the data and to conclude on how the diversity of linguistic repertoires becomes a resource to articulate emotions between adults, parents and their children.

    Description: Elaborating on Goffman’s ideas of self and face, the chapter examines the ways in which patients with personality disorders manage the stigma of impulsive behaviours (such as verbal or physical violence) in psychiatric assessment interviews. Patients display three different types of stance when they describe their impulsive behaviours. They can (1) show self-reproach through evaluations, verbal marking of the exceptionality of their behaviour, or through bodily displays. They can also (2) lessen the reproach by conveying that there are also moments or aspects of their behaviour when they do not deviate from the norm. Sometimes, however, the patients (3) defy the reproach by showing joy or satisfaction with their impulsive behaviours. The three stance displays correspond to the three strategies of self-management of stigmatised persons discussed by Goffman. While Goffman discussed such strategies at the level of autobiographical time, conversation analysis demonstrates them in micro-interactional time.

    Description: This chapter advances a novel theoretic-methodological approach to the analysis of qualitative data. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of the relationship between social inequality and educational outcomes in post-colonial rural Southern contexts. It operationalises the Habitus Listening Guide (Arnot & Naveed, 2014) derived from Bourdieu’s theory of cultural reproduction and contemporary narrative theory. The chapter describes the application of four listenings using a dialogic, multi-layered, analysis of interview transcripts. It uncovers the polyphonic voices of four members of Munawar Hussain’s family, describing the impact of the rural social structure on their educational and occupational biographies. Inter-narrativity is generated through repeated listenings of the social structure, of paired father-mother and son-daughter and then of father-son and mother-daughter narratives, and a final mythic-ritual listening which makes audible when religious beliefs are called into play. These beliefs either contribute to the maintenance of poverty and social inequality, and yet inspire strategies to disrupt power structures through education as a religious duty. Each listening reveals the dialectic relationship between the hierarchal post-colonial social order and its school system, and the family’s gendered and generational educational aspirations, strategies, and outcomes.
