    Description: At the end of 2017, the Research Network on Work, Gender and Daily Life was created, with the support of the Ibero-American Postgraduate University Association (AUIP). 44 researchers from 19 universities in 11 Latin American countries participated in its initial constitution. After almost 6 years, this network has doubled in size: close to a hundred participants, in 36 universities and 13 countries in the region. This journey has allowed consolidated and training researchers to be convened at the end of 2022 to publish recent findings on the dynamics of gender inequalities in the productive and reproductive sphere. The result is condensed in this volume, which also constitutes an invitation for future collaborations and dialogues between the world of scientific knowledge and the social reality of women and dissidents in Ibero-America.

El liberalismo revolucionario en España y América en los años veinte”, realizado en Las Cabezas de San Juan y Sevilla en marzo de 2020, como forma de reflexionar (y celebrar, por supuesto) el bicentenario del Trienio Liberal español, atendiendo no sólo a sus implicancias en la Península Ibérica, sino especialmente a su impacto en América. La efeméride funcionó, entonces, como una excusa para analizar problemas relevantes del pasado y el presente. En este caso, los vínculos entre una sociedad estancada, y que ya nada más tenía para ofrecer, y una de las revoluciones más importantes que se desenvolvió a lo largo y ancho de Iberoamérica. Esto se hizo por medio de la presentación de un conjunto de investigaciones que atendieron a los aspectos económicos, políticos, sociales y culturales de la revolución de 1820. Se trató de un esfuerzo colectivo, que esperamos haber plasmado en esta compilación.

    Description: Este libro examina las ideas que forman parte del pensa­miento político, económico y filosófico latinoamericano que se convirtieron en referencia para el MIR chileno. Se describe y problematiza la relación que existía entre los científicos sociales latinoamericanos y la organización revolucionaria, diferenciando entre quienes cumplían un rol de referentes y quienes eran militantes del MIR. Para esto, se analizan las redes intelectuales que permitían la difusión del pensamiento a nivel general en América Latina, así como los lazos que habían establecido los intelectuales miristas con sus símiles latinoamericanos. A la par, se definen los roles que cumplían en la organización dichos intelectuales, así como la existencia de una política del MIR sobre este sujeto específico. En términos más amplios, interesa saber de qué manera el pensamiento social latinoamericano aportó a la definición del MIR y cómo la organización revolucionaria aportó, a su vez, al pensamiento político local.

Especialmente, reuniendo trabajos presentados allí donde estas personas han realizado sus exposiciones e intercambiado sus ideas cara a cara y voz a voz. Por ello, no se trata simplemente de reunir artículos procedentes de diversas regiones de personas que nunca se conocieron, sino mostrar estas reuniones y potenciar otros encuentros, con publicaciones que les otorguen nuevo impulso. La publicación viene a ser un acto segundo, respecto del encuentro físico. Articular las intelectualidades de los sures es una tarea inmensa, que ha tenido sucesivos fracasos y algunos pequeños logros. El mayor obstáculo para articularnos ha sido la falta de interés que mostramos unas por otras, cuestión derivada del desconocimiento mutuo, del aislamiento y del peso desmedido que, en los imaginarios, poseen las intelectualidades del centro. A esto se suman, en segundo plano, la escasez de recursos económicos y cierta debilidad de las instituciones académicas. Los trabajos publicados en esta colección normalmente no se traducirán, precisamente para reconocer y explicitar que estas conversaciones obligatoriamente deberán darse de forma políglota, aunque normalmente se trate de las lenguas de las colonizaciones.

Our intention in bringing together the different contributions was to offer a range of issues and problems that do not exhaust the increasingly broad and complex agenda of problems arising from migratory groups.     Description: Following Levita’s statement, the Masorah transmitted by medieval illuminated manuscripts was generally considered as less significant for the study of the biblical and masoretical knowledge in the Jewish world. The biblical codices produced in Ashkenaz were considerably disregarded compared to Spanish codices. Challenging this assertion, this work engages in a reflection on the link between the standard Eastern tradition and the Ashkenazic biblical text-culture of the 13th century. Élodie Attia provides an edition of thirteen cases taken from MS Vat. Ebr. 14, offering the oldest series of Masoretic notes written inside figurative and ornamental designs. Its critical apparatus offers an unprecedented comparison with the oldest Eastern and Ashkenazic sources to evaluate if the scribe paid more attention to aesthetic details than to the textual contents. In an unexpected way, the Masoretic notes of Elijah ha-Naqdan, even written in figurative forms, show a close philological link with the Masorah of the eastern Tiberian sources and prove that the presence of figurative elements neither represents a loss nor a distortion of Masoretic knowledge, but rather illustrates a development in the Masoretic tradition.

    Description: This book suggests the importance of examining alternative discourses in the social sciences, in this case economics, beyond western-centric cultural milieu. The account attempts to unveil the existence of a post Second World War economic approach developed in Latin America. The perspective questioned the dominant economic science disseminated within and outside the Anglo-Saxon or Eurocentric countries (western-centric academia) during the 1950´s. Today, after the appalling cataclysms in welfare and equality generated by neoclassical economics, an alternative economics seems order in the Northern and Southern hemisphere. The rebirth of Latin American Structuralism within the developing countries, and the widely publicized names of Raúl Prebisch, Celso Furtado among others, within the western-centric audiences requires an up to date of the vocabulary and concepts. Retrospectively these authors discussed can be examined as the original sources in Latin America among those who developed the basis of decolonial thought. The book problematizes the domestication of Latin American Structuralism in the Northern or Southern hemisphere alike and discusses its potential similarities to Post-Keynesian perspectives related to power asymmetries among countries, firms, and heterogenous agents.

    Description: This volume concludes the edition, translation, and commentary of the first order of the "Jerusalem Talmud". It contains four small but important tractates. The first, Ma‘aser Šeni, deals with Second Tithe (Deut. 14:22-27) and the fourth-year fruit of a newly planted tree (Lev. 19:24). This is sanctified food, to be consumed by the laity at the holy precinct, for which redemption is expressly authorized. The tractate deals in large part with the problems of redemption of dedicated food. In addition, there is a long section on the interpretation of dreams, and a detailed description of the ceremony of presentation of the tithe in the Temple. The second tractate, Hallah, details the application of the general rules of heave to the Cohen’s part of any bread dough. The third tractate, ‘Orlah, the fruit of a newly planted tree during the first three years (Lev. 19:23), treats this as paradigm for all food whose usufruct is forbidden, and most of the tractate discusses the problems that may arise if any such food is not immediately disposed of. The last tractate, Bikkurim, describes the rules for selection and presentation of First Fruits in the Temple on or after Pentecost. The rite is given in detail, with an excursus on the honor due elders. A first appendix shows the position of the Tosephta as intermediary between Yerushalmi and Babli tradition, with a distinct slant towards Babylonian positions. A second appendix tries to identify the main authors of the tractates of this first order.

    Description: The volume that the reader has in his hands (or on his screen) constitutes a selection of the studies presented at the international congress “1820. The Illusion of Freedom. Revolutionary liberalism in Spain and America in the 1920s ”, held in Las Cabezas de San Juan and Seville in March 2020, as a way to reflect (and celebrate, of course) the bicentennial of the revolution that began the so-called Liberal Triennium Spanish. The anniversary functioned as an excuse to analyze relevant problems of the present. In this case, the congress returned to the links between a stagnant society, which had nothing else to offer, and one of the most important revolutions that took place in the Iberian Peninsula. This was done through the presentation of a set of investigations that addressed the economic, political, social and cultural aspects of the Spanish revolution of 1820, and that crossed the Ibero-American world in the first half of the 19th century. It was a collective effort, which we hope we have embodied in this compilation.

    Description: In this volume, six historians explore new approaches to Isaac Orobio de Castro (1617–1687), an Amsterdam physician who was the most widely-read among the early modern defenders of Judaism against Christian proselytizing. He was also the major author who rebutted Benedict Spinoza’s Freethought from inside his own Sephardic community. Reflecting on the developments in early modern studies that have appeared since the publication of Yosef Kaplan’s seminal monograph in 1982, the authors revisit Orobio’s intellectual personality with a focus on transcultural processes, clandestine book culture, philosophical rhetoric, and literary reception. Born in Portugal to Christian parents of Jewish ancestry, Orobio left behind a brilliant career as a court physician in Spain and France when he publicly embraced Judaism. With academic erudition, he translated Jewish religious positions into the eclectic philosophy of the day, using both rationalist and sceptic arguments. His work leaked out into the non-Jewish world and armed Enlightenment philosophers for their attacks on Christianity, showing the impact of Jewish criticism on the early modern quest for philosophical certainty and religious pluralism.

    Description: This book focuses on Abraham Abulafia's esoteric thought in relation to Maimonides, Maimonideans, and Islamic thought in the line of Leo Strauss' theory of the history of philosophy. A survey of Abulafia's sources leads into an analysis of the esoteric meaning on the famous parable of the three rings, considering also the possible connection between this parable, which Abdulafia inserted into a book dedicated to his student, the 13th century rabbi Nathan the wise, and the Lessing's Play Nathan the Wise. The book also examines Abulafia's universalistic understanding of the nature of the Bible, the Hebrew language, and the people of Israel (or the Sinaic revelation). The universal aspects of Abulafia’s thought have been put in relief against the more widespread Kabbalistic views which are predominantly particularistic. A number of texts have also been identified here for the first time as authored by Abulafia.

    Description: After half a century of occupation and tremendous costs of the conflict, Israel is still struggling with the idea of a Palestinian state in what is often perceived as the Biblical Eretz Israel. Mapping Zionism, enemy images, peace and war policies, as well as democracy within the Jewish State, the present study offers original insights into Israel’s role in this conflict. By analyzing Israeli history, politics and security-oriented political culture as it has been evolving from 1948 on, this book reveals the ideological and political structures of a Zionist-oriented state and society. In doing so, it uncovers the abyss between the Zionist vision of Eretz Israel on the one hand and the aspiration to achieve normalization, peace and security on the other. In view of this conflict-laden bi-national reality, the Palestinian question is identified as the Achilles‘ heel of Jewish statehood in the Land of Israel. Thus, Zionist Israel and the Question of Palestine provides a fresh, innovative, critical and yet accessible perspective on one of the most controversial issues in contemporary history.

    Description: The ninth volume of this edition, translation, and commentary of the Jerusalem Talmud contains two Tractates. The first Tractate, “Documents”, treats divorce law and principles of agency when written documents are required. Collateral topics are the rules for documents of manumission, those for sealed documents whose contents may be hidden from witnesses, the rules by which the divorced wife can collect the moneys due her, the requirement that both divorcer and divorcee be of sound mind, and the rules of conditional divorce. The second Tractate, “Nazirites”, describes the Nasirean vow and is the main rabbinic source about the impurity of the dead. As in all volumes of this edition, a (Sephardic rabbinic) vocalized text is presented, with parallel texts used as source of variant readings. A new translation is accompanied by an extensive commentary explaining the rabbinic background of all statements and noting Talmudic and related parallels. Attention is drawn to the extensive Babylonization of the Giṭṭin text compared to genizah texts.

I know It deals with a problem in which José Gaos played a fundamental role; not only for wondering from his residence in Mexico about what (Latin) American of our philosophical tradition, but because he was the teacher trainer of the following generations that assumed as a cultural task the question of a properly Latin American philosophy-Highlighting the figure of Leopoldo Zea. Curiously In this perspective, Chilean philosophy will only find out in the second mid-twentieth century with Félix Schwartzmann and Luis Oyarzún, who put Chile, from a tradition different from that of Gaos, as place of enunciation. Juan Miguel Chávez and Gonzalo García propose that the desire for authenticity continues to operate in the proposals current that have revitalized the tradition of the essay; even more, they point out that it is a recursive topic in the history of comings whose. An attempt at explanation leads to the sociology of knowledge.

    Description: The Song of Songs, a lyric cycle of love scenes without a narrative plot, has often been considered as the Bible’s most beautiful and enigmatic book. The present study questions the still dominant exegetical convention that merges all of the Song’s voices into the dialogue of a single couple, its composite heroine Shulamit being a projection screen for norms of womanhood. An alternative socio-spatial reading, starting with the Hebrew text’s strophic patterns and its references to historical realia, explores the poem’s artful alternation between courtly, urban, rural, and pastoral scenes with their distinct characters. The literary construction of social difference juxtaposes class-specific patterns of consumption, mobility, emotion, power structures, and gender relations. This new image of the cycle as a detailed poetic frieze of ancient society eventually leads to a precise hypothesis concerning its literary and religious context in the Hellenistic age, as well as its geographical origins in the multiethnic borderland east of the Jordan. In a Jewish echo of anthropological skepticism, the poem emphasizes the plurality and relativity of the human condition while praising the communicative powers of pleasure, fantasy, and multifarious Eros.

    Description: In the last two decades a large amount of previously secret documents on Jewish issues emerged from the newly opened Communist archives. The selection of these papers published in the volume and stemming mostly from Hungarian archives will shed light on a period of Jewish history that is largely ignored because much of the current scholarship treats the Shoah as the end of Jewish history in the region. The documents introduced and commented by the editor of the volume, András Kovács, will give insight into the conditions and constraints under which the Jewish communities, first of all, the largest Jewish community of the region, the Hungarian one had to survive in the time of the post-Stalinist Communist dictatorship. They may shed light on the ways how Jewish policy of the Soviet bloc countries was coordinated and orchestrated from Moscow and by the single countries. The archival material will prove that the ruling communist parties were restlessly preoccupied with the Jewish question. This preoccupation, which kept the whole issue alive in the decades of communist rule, explains to a great extent its open reemergence in the time of transition and in the post-communist period.

    Description: The rich history of the German rabbinate came to an abrupt halt with the November Pogrom of 1938. The need to leave Germany became clear and many rabbis made use of the visas they had been offered. Their resettlement in Britain was hampered by additional obstacles such as internment, deportation, enlistment in the Pioneer Corps. But rabbis still attempted to support their fellow refugees with spiritual and pastoral care. The refugee rabbis replanted the seed of the once proud German Judaism into British soil. New synagogues were founded and institutions of Jewish learning sprung up, like rabbinic training and the continuation of Wissenschaft des Judentums. The arrival of Leo Baeck professionalized these efforts and resulted in the foundation of the Leo Baeck College in London. Refugee rabbis now settled and obtained pulpits in the many newly founded synagogues. Their arrival in Britain was the catalyst for much change in British Judaism, an influence that can still be felt today.

    Description: An unexpected immigration wave of Jews from the former Soviet Union mostly in the 1990s has stabilized and enlarged Jewish life in Germany. Jewish kindergartens and schools were opened, and Jewish museums, theaters, and festivals are attracting a wide audience. No doubt: Jews will continue to live in Germany. At the same time, Jewish life has undergone an impressing transformation in the second half of the 20th century– from rejection to acceptance, but not without disillusionments and heated debates. And while the ´new Jews of Germany,` 90 percent of them of Eastern European background, are already considered an important factor of the contemporary Jewish diaspora, they still grapple with the shadow of the Holocaust, with internal cultural clashes and with difficulties in shaping a new collective identity. What does it mean to live a Jewish life in present-day Germany? How are Jewish thoughts, feelings, and practices reflected in contemporary arts, literature, and movies? What will remain of the former German Jewish cultural heritage? Who are the new Jewish elites, and how successful is the fight against anti-Semitism? This volume offers some answers.
