    Description: Hoploscopa are mid-sized reddish-brown moths with white, yellow or red pattern elements which inhabit montane wet forests of South-East Asia, from Thailand to the Samoan Islands. With only sixteen species described – all, with one exception, were described between the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century – the diversity of this genus was exceedingly under estimated. Previous authors suggested the occurrence of at least 70 species in the British Museum (NHM, London) awaiting description. A recent paper brought the first host plant records on ferns for this genus and provided COI barcodes for some undescribed species. Examination of morphology and COI barcodes from museum specimens and collected material as well as of the type specimens of hitherto described species led to the description of 26 new species, bringing the total number of species in the genus to 41. Interestingly, these moths show a high degree of endemism: the few species ranging over several islands show pronounced barcode splits (2 to 5 %) between islands, raising questions about species boundaries among island populations. Another thirty species still described are estimated from the collection of the NMH London and will be the scope of a second publication.

    Description: The overarching aim of the atlas is to communicate the potential risks of climatic change to the future of European butterflies. The main objectives are to: (1) provide a visual aid to discussions on climate change risks and impacts on biodiversity and thus contribute to risk communication as a core element of risk assessment; (2) present crucial data on a large group of species which could help to prioritise conservation efforts in the face of climatic change; (3) reach a broader audience through the combination of new scientific results with photographs of all treated species and some straight forward information about the species and their ecology. The results of this atlas show that climate change is likely to have a profound effect on European butterflies. Ways to mitigate some of the negative impacts are to (1) maintain large populations in diverse habitats; (2) encourage mobility across the landscape; (3) reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses; (4) allow maximum time for species adaptation; (4) conduct further research on climate change and its impacts on biodiversity. The book is a result of long-term research of a large international team of scientists, working at research institutes and non-governmental organizations, many within the framework of projects funded by the European Commission.

    Description: The first taxonomic treatment of the smut fungi in Greenland is provided. A total of 43 species in 11 genera are treated and illustrated by photographs of sori, microphotographs of spores in LM and SEM, and distribution maps. Two species, Anthracoidea pseudofoetidae and Urocystis tothii, are recorded as new from North America. Thirteen species, Anthracoidea altera, A. capillaris, A. limosa, A. liroi, A. pseudofoetidae, A. scirpoideae, A. turfosa, Microbotryum lagerheimii, M. stellariae, Schizonella elynae, Stegocintractia luzulae, Urocystis fischeri, and U. tothii, are reported for the first time from Greenland. The most numerous distribution groups are the following: circumpolar–alpine and Arctic–alpine species – 14; circumboreal–polar species – 10; and circumpolar and Arctic species – 6. The most widely distributed smut fungi in Greenland are Anthracoidea bigelowii, A. elynae, Microbotryum bistortarum, and M. vinosum. Most species were found in the High Arctic zone (29 species), while from the Low Arctic zone and the Subarctic zone, 26 and 19 species were known, respectively. Ten species, Anthracoidea bigelowii, A. capillaris, A. elynae, Microbotryum bistortarum, M. koenigiae, M. pustulatum, M. silenes-acaulis, M. vinosum, Schizonella elynae, and Urocystis sorosporioides, were recorded from all three zones. Only plants belonging to six families, Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Juncaceae, Ranunculaceae, Caryophyllaceae, and Polygonaceae, out of a total of 55 in the flora of Greenland, hosted smut fungi. Carex was the genus with the highest number of host species (22). The total number of the host plants (45 species) was 8.5 % out of a total of 532 vascular plants in the flora of Greenland.

    Description: This book presents the results from the palynological and paleoecological studies conducted with my participation in Southwestern Bulgaria during the period 1985-2020. The study area has always played a key role in the investigation of the Late Quaternary vegetation history in Bulgaria since the middle of the past century. With the development of the research methods (pollen analysis, determination of plant macrofossils, radiocarbon dating, sediment analysis, computer software, etc.) in the last decades it turned out to be a challenge for me to evaluate critically again and synthesize the paleoecological information. In my opinion, such an approach allows us to reveal in more details the general trends of the postglacial vegetation development for the last 18000-15000 years and to take also into account the role of humans in transforming the natural environment after the establishment of agriculture and the practice of stockbreeding in this part of the country along the Struma river.

Morphology (adults and immatures), biology, distribution, detailed taxonomic history and systematics are presented for each species, along with a full literature review and bibliography. Large, high resolution photos displaying all diagnostic characters are presented as well as an illustrated dichotomous identification key to adult species of Agrilus treated in this work.     Description: Dragonflies are strikingly beautiful insects and small colourful pearls of Sri Lanka's remarkable biodiversity. At present, 124 species are known from the island, of which almost half are endemic. Such an extraordinary level of endemism makes Sri Lankan dragonflies an exceptionally interesting group for studies in biodiversity, zoogeography, phylogeny and ecology. The book "Dragonfly fauna of Sri Lanka: distribution and biology, with threat status of its endemics" is the result of almost 20 years of the authors' work on the subject. With detailed texts and hundreds of colour photographs, maps and charts, it summarizes all the available knowledge on the distribution, taxonomy, biology and disturbing threat status of the dragonflies of Sri Lanka. It aims to raise awareness and promote interest in odonatology among a widespread and diverse community of researchers, nature conservationists and students in Sri Lanka and abroad.

    Description: Sri Lanka represents an important biodiversity hotspot region of the world. Yet, over the past 170 years, exploration of the ant fauna of Sri Lanka has received sporadic attention. Here we provide a synthesis of the regional taxo­nomic work carried out to date, as well as a historical overview of myrmecological efforts in Sri Lanka, so that it can serve as a baseline for future ant studies. Thus far, eleven of the seventeen known extant ant subfamilies, 79 genera and 341 valid species and subspecies have been recorded in Sri Lanka. 82 species (24%) of the ant fauna are endemic to the island, while 18 species are considered introduced. Our results also highlight that most information available on Sri Lankan ant distribution is restricted to a few districts and largely confined to the ‘wet zone’. It is thus likely that other climatic zones, which have received less sampling and taxonomic efforts, may in the future contribute significantly to new discoveries once properly surveyed.

    Description: Victoria Island in Canada’s western Arctic is the eighth largest island in the world and the second largest in Canada. Here, we report the results of a floristic study of vascular plant diversity of Victoria Island. The study is based on a specimen-based dataset comprising 7031 unique collections from the island, including some 2870 new collections gathered between 2008 and 2019 by the authors and nearly 1000 specimens variously gathered by N. olunin (in 1947), M. Oldenburg (1940s–1950s) and S. Edlund (1980s) that, until recently, were part of the unprocessed backlog of the National Herbarium of Canada and unavailable to researchers. Results are presented in an annotated checklist, including keys and distribution maps for all taxa, citation of specimens, comments on taxonomy, distribution and the history of documentation of taxa across the island, and photographs for a subset of taxa. The vascular plant flora of Victoria Island comprises 38 families, 108 genera, 272 species, and 17 additional taxa. Of the 289 taxa known on the island, 237 are recorded from the Northwest Territories portion of the island and 277 from the Nunavut part. Thirty-nine taxa are known on the island from a single collection, seven from two collections and three from three collections. Twenty-one taxa in eight families are newly recorded for the flora of Victoria Island, and eight of these are new to the flora of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The floristic data presented here represent a new baseline on which continued exploration of the vascular flora of Victoria Island – particularly the numerous areas of the island that remain unexplored or poorly explored botanically – will build.

    Description: Specimens of the genus Salcedia Fairmaire, 1899 are rumoured to be rare. The reason for their apparent rarity might be that they are not immediately recognisable as carabids because their body surface is usually covered with a tough film and layers of mud or clay that obscure important diagnostic characters. Therefore, at first glance, these beetles look more like Colydiidae (e.g., genus Dastarcus Walker, 1858) or small Tenebrionidae (e.g., genus Gonocephalum Chevrolat, 1849). This confusion has been deepened with the traditionally short historic descriptions, leading to further misinterpretation of morphological characters on both species and suprageneric levels. The present study aims to resolve these problems by revising the species of genus Salcedia based on morphological characters after cleaning the available specimens by applying a special mild cleaning method. The revision resulted in the recognition of 18 valid species, nine of which were described as new. Because all these species seem to have been largely overlooked in the field due to their hidden way of life, all the available information concerning their biology and distribution has been summarized.

    Description: This document aims to summarise the scientific consensus relating to every step of the field and laboratory workflows involved in the most common types of samples and analyses. We do not go into great detail regarding bioinformatics (computational processing of sequence data) and data analysis since these are extensive topics in their own right. We uniquely set the field and lab steps in the context of the practical and logistical constraints faced by environmental managers in terms of cost, logistics, safety, ease-of-use, and quality assurance, highlighting key decisions to be made and the inherent trade-offs associated with the various options. We hope that this will support non-experts, and those new to the field, to navigate the key considerations associated with planning or evaluating monitoring programmes using DNA-based monitoring methods. Additionally, it will aid decision-makers in writing and evaluating tenders and proposals, ensuring that the methods used for a given project are fit-for-purpose and that results are correctly interpreted.

Many plants of agricultural and ornamental importance are attacked in the field and in glasshouses, and while fly populations are normally kept in check by hymenopterous parasitoids, they sometimes occur in large enough numbers to affect yield and may destroy entire crops. Species affecting crops may be specialists on one host or a larger number of related hosts, but only 16 species of Liriomyza, Phytomyza and Tropicomyia are truly polyphagous. The threat of these flies is compounded by increasing insecticide resistance and the ease by which polyphagous species can multiply on weeds around growing areas or on alternate crops. All species are also readily spread through trade on their host plant or in soil, causing some species to become globally invasive, with some being of quarantine concern. An overview of agromyzid biology, ecology and agricultural importance is provided, and detailed consideration is given for 26 major pests of special concern. For each of these species, an overview of contemporary knowledge is provided for identification and diagnosis, global distribution, hosts plant(s), host damage, biology, and means of dispersal.     Description: The special issue of plant diversity in Southeast Asia will focus on the documentation of new discoveries in SE Asia. There are four global biodiversity hotspots in Southeast Asia. Although there are many plans to protect this rich biodiversity, however, the rich biodiversity in SE Asia is under threat due to economic development and population growth. There is a huge gap between our knowledge and biodiversity in SE Asia. During the last six investigations, many new taxa, including new species, new genera, have been discovered. This special issue will bring the rich but little known biodiversity to the public and protect them.

    Description: The main objective of the LIFE project Monitoring of Insect with Public Participation (MIPP) is to develop and test methods for the monitoring of five species of beetles listed in Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive (Osmoderma eremita, Lucanus cervus, Cerambyx cerdo, Rosalia alpina and Morimus funereus). A second objective of the project is the collection of faunistic data, gathered by citizens, via the web and with an app for smartphones. The third aim is to inform and educate the general public on issues such as Natura 2000, Habitats Directive, monitoring and saproxylic insects.

    Description: Rhinophoridae are a small family of calyptrate flies commonly known as “woodlouse flies” due to their unique parasitoid habit of developing inside their isopod hosts (Oniscidea). Beside this peculiarity, the adult stage lacks unique family autapomorphies, sometimes making their identification challenging. However, their larvae are highly apomorphic and peculiar due to their unusual locomotive behaviour of leach-like crawling or even somersaulting. Until recently, woodlouse flies were considered an Old World group, with a peak in species diversity in the Turano-Mediterranean area. However, recent discoveries of new taxa in the tropics suggest that this was due to inadequate sampling of the Southern Hemisphere faunas. Confirming this lack of knowledge, four new genera and five new species are described here from both the Old and New World tropics, including a remarkable species endemic to the Mascarene Islands. Recent phylogenetic studies are helping us to better understand rhinophorid boundaries, and the family circumscription is adjusted accordingly. During the last decade, several taxa have been either included or excluded, and others have been proposed as new to science, making the compilation of this world catalogue highly needed. A richly illustrated key to the world woodlouse fly genera is provided.

    Description: The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants is a set of voluntary rules that govern the naming of these organisms. These rules are changed via a process that begins with the community suggesting amendments to the current Code and culminates in a meeting at which all the proposed changes are discussed, debated and voted upon, held every six years in association with an International Botanical Congress. The most recent meeting, five days of discussions and decisions of the Nomenclature Section of the XIX International Botanical Congress, took place in Shenzhen, China in July 2017. The resulting Shenzhen Code was published in 2018. This is the official report of the proceedings of the meeting for the historical record, covering the debate and decisions taken. It conveys a true and lively picture of the event, retaining the flavour of goodwill and humour that permeated the Nomenclature Section of the Shenzhen Congress.

    Description: This is the last volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus. We tried to follow the system generally accepted. After the publication of the first volume of the series (Erytraeoidea, Calyptostomatoidea) in 2008 appeared a comprehensive treatment of mites (Manuel of Acarology III of Krantz & Walter, Eds. 2009), in which many changes in the system of Acari are proposed. Acariformes are already a superorder, Prostigmata – suborder, but within the order Trombidiformes. Here is treated first the infraorder Labidostommatina with its only superfamily Labidostommatoidea and the only family Labidostommatidae with five genera and 75 species. The other infraorder, treated in the present volume (Eupodoidea) includes the superfamily Eupodoidea with nine families, including five described after 1979. Treated are also the superfamilies Tydeoidea (fam. Ereynetidae), Paratydeoidea (Paratydeidae), Anystoidea (five families), Caeculoidea (Caeculidae), Adamystoidea (Adamystidae), and Pomerantzioidea (Pomerantziidae). In this volume are analysed 230 genera and 967 species of mites.

    Description: Scorzonera is a genus of perennial herbs and dwarf subshrubs widespread in the temperate and subtropical regions of Eurasia and N Africa. It comprises in its common wide sense some 180–190 species and is the largest and name-giving genus of the subtribe Scorzonerinae of the chicory tribe in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Its circumscription has long been the subject of debate and available molecular phylogenetic analyses affirmed the polyphyly of Scorzonera in its wide sense. This paper presents a re-evaluation of Scorzonera and its related genera, based on carpological (including anatomical) and molecular phylogenetic analyses of a comprehensive sampling, for the first time spanning the entire subtribe and all major groups. Confirming the polyphyly of Scorzonera, this paper offers a revised classification of the subtribe, which recognises seven genera in accordance with the phylogenetic lineages resolved: Gelasia, Lipschitzia gen. nov., Pseudopodospermum, Pterachaenia, Ramaliella gen. nov., Scorzonera and Takhtajaniantha. A key to the revised genera and a characterisation of the genera and major clades are provided.

    Description: The 9th volume of the series Acarorum Catalogus contains lists of mites of 13 families, 225 genera and 1268 species of the superfamilies Schizoglyphoidea, Histiostomatoidea, Canestrinioidea and Hemisarcoptoidea. Most of these mites live on insects or other animals (as parasites, phoretic or commensals), some inhabit rotten plant material, dung or fungi. Mites of the families Chetochelacaridae and Lophonotacaridae are specialised to live with Myriapods (Diplopoda). The peculiar aquatic or intertidal mites of the families Hyadesidae and Algophagidae are also included.

    Description: Bumble bees represent one of the most important groups of pollinators. In addition to their ecological and economic relevance, they are also a highly charismatic group which can help to increase the interest of people in realizing, enjoying and conserving natural systems. However, like most animals, bumble bees are sensitive to climate. In this atlas, maps depicting potential risks of climate change for bumble bees are shown together with informative summary statistics, ecological background information and a picture of each European species. Thanks to the EU FP7 project STEP, the authors gathered over one million bumblebee records from all over Europe. Based on these data, they modelled the current climatic niche for almost all European species (56 species) and projected future climatically suitable conditions using three climate change scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100. While under a moderate change scenario only 3 species are projected to be at the verge of extinction by 2100, 14 species are at high risk under an intermediate change scenario. Under a most severe change scenario as many as 25 species are projected to lose almost all of their climatically suitable area, while a total of 53 species (77% of the 69 European species) would lose the main part of their suitable area. Climatic risks for bumblebees can be extremely high, depending on the future development of human society, and the corresponding effects on the climate. Strong mitigation strategies are needed to preserve this important species group and to ensure the sustainable provision of pollination services, to which they considerably contribute.
