Description: During the 3D seismic reflection survey within the project Integrated Seisrnics Oberpfalz 1989 (ISO89) the vibroseis source signals were recorded simultaneously with five threecomponent geophone borehole chain SEKANS or a single threecomponent borehole geophone, respectively, in the KTB pilot hole. The aim was to measure the traveltimes of direct waves in the depth range between 3220 and 3420 m in order to deduce spatial velocity inhomogeneities between surface and recording depth from traveltime residuals in the surroundings of the KTB. These data shall be used for improved static corrections if distinct from statics obtained by short refraction lines and first arrival analysis of surface data. A short description of the method is given which is based on approximation by least square fitted planes. Data examples and preliminary results are presented.

Description: The tool chain SEKAN 5 developed and constructed by PRAKLASEISMOS was proved to be capable of withstanding long-term operation under the given pressure and temperature conditions in a chemically active Dehydrill HT mud in the KTB Oberpfalz VB lA (350 bar, 110 °C, pH 10-11). The tool comprises five identical seismic receiver sondes which are equipped with a three-component receiver system, an electrically driven clamping unit and a magnetic compass system. The results of the reference tests and the measured compass values were subjected to critical checks. For the observation period the reference tests on different days for each individual sonde indicated good agreement with respect to specific signal forms. The differences in orientation determined from the seismic data and the compass values are between -11 degrees and -26 degrees. The cause of the differences can be explained in that the wave paths lie outside of the observation plane.

Description: The high reflectivity of the upper and middle crust of the Oberpfalz, both for near vertical and wide-angle reflections, was one reason for selecting this area as site for the German Continental Deep Drilling Program KTB. A peculiarity in the middle crust beneath the KTB site is the so-called Erbendorf-Body (EB) giving rise to extremely strong wide-angle reflections. It deserves special interest because its position right on the border between the Saxothuringian and Moldanubian zones of the Vari scan fold belt, the unusual high p-wave velocities (over 7.0 km/s) in its lower part at 11 to 14 km depth, and associated dipping reflectors suggest a possible lower crustal origin of the EB. A specially designed and so far unique wide-angle 3D-survey was carried out as part of the program "Integrated Seismics Oberpfalz 89" for investigating the spatial extent, the velocity distribution and the internal structure of the EB. The first results show clearly that the EB ist not a local phenomenon beneath the DEKORP4 line, but that it exists, yet with remarkable complexities, beneath the whole covered area between the Franconian Line and the Falkenberg granite complex. The wide-angle shots were also recorded by four 3-component geophones in the KTB pilot hole at 3195 to 3295 m depth and provided convincing evidence for s-wave splitting in the upper crust SE of the KTB location. This anisotropy effect seems to be related to the overall strike and dip of rock foliation in the zone of Erbendorf-VohenstrauB (ZEV).

Description: Data are presented from integrated special experiments which have been performed in conjunction with a seismic 30 reflection survey within the framework of IS089 ( Integrated Sei smi cs Oberpfal z 1989) coordinated by DEKOR(PG erman Continental Seismic Reflection Program) between July and Novembero f 1989. The main objective was to study the nature of P- and S-wave reflections and velocities, the Poisson's ratio and the seismic anisotropy in a medium of crystalline rocks around the KTB site (Continental Deep Drilling Program), where the borehole has reached a depth of 4000 m. A digital 5-unit geophone chain with 25 m spacing and three components was used for downhole recording. The program described here consists of: 1) shearwave 2D reflection profiling (SCMPw} ith two 10-12 km long lines crossing the KTB-site, source: 2 horizontal vibrators with different orientations, 3-component recording; 2) shearwave moving source profiling (S-MSP); downhole recording of the source points of the SCMP; 3) vertical seismic profiling (VSP) down to 3660 m with different source azimuths and offsets (zero-offset, 4 km, 8 km); P- and S-wave sources: explosives, horizontal and vertical vibrators, and horizontal hammer techniques. 4) multiple azimuth shearwave experiment (MASE) with 4 km and 8 km offset and horizontal vibrator sources (radial and transversal orientation). The VSP surveys display steeply dipping reflections, increasing in number below 3000 m depth. Horizontal structures, preferentially seen in the surface profiling, are the exception. Polarization analysis of shearwaves shows dominant azimuths in shearwave splitting which correlate with maximum horizontal stress (N 158° E) and with azimuth and dip of foliation.

Description: The moving source profiling (MSP) measurements are done by moving seismic sources along a surface line crossing the well site while a chain of geophones, placed within the well bore at a certain depth, records the seismic response. A multifold coverage of the subsurface can be obtained by repeating the source profile for a number of different geophone depths. This idea of altering the conventional vertical seismic profiling (VSP) geometry to allow illumination of subsurface structure away from the well is an attractive idea because it is designed to better locate horizons below the drill bit. If these target horizons can be correlated with reflectors in usual seismic profiles, recorded on the surface, the latter can be calibrated by the MSP results. Two MSP experiments were realized in the KTB pilot borehole. The first (MSP 1) included two N-S and E-W orientated source profiles of 10 km length and a single threecomponent geophone at 3585 m depth. Later a full MSP experiment (MSP 2) was run for one NE-SW orientated source profile and 20 different geophone depths. The source line was extended 7 km to the Northeast and 3 km to the Southwest of the well. A vibrator source produced seismic signals every 50 m. These shots were recorded by three-component geophones at depths from 3210 m to 3685 m with 25 m intervals resulting in a 20-fold coverage of the illuminated subsurface. Due to the difficulties encountered in crystalline environments, different processing techniques were combined for interpretation of the MSP data set. Aside from comparing measured first-break times with theoretical ones to determine seismic velocities of the overburden an MSP-CDP transformation for migration were applied. The steeply dipping boundary of the Falkenberg granitic intrusion was mapped as a distinct velocity contrast east of the KTB well. On the other hand, some remarkable seismic reflectors at depths between 4000 m and 10000 m are predicted to be hit by the future KTB main borehole.

Description / Table of Contents: PREFACE There are problems, when applying statistical inference to the analysis of data, which are not readily solved by the inferential methods of the standard statistical techniques. One example is the computation of confidence intervals for variance components or for functions of variance components. Another example is the statistical inference on the random parameters of the mixed model of the standard statistical techniques or the inference on parameters of nonlinear models. Bayesian analysis gives answers to these problems. The advantage of the Bayesian approach is its conceptual simplicity. It is based on Bayes' theorem only. In general, the posterior distribution for the unknown parameters following from Bayes' theorem can be readily written down. The statistical inference is then solved by this distribution. Often the posterior distribution cannot be integrated analytically. However, this is not a serious drawback, since efficient methods exist for the numerical integration. The results of the standard statistical techniques concerning the linear models can also be derived by the Bayesian inference. These techniques may therefore be considered as special cases of the Bayesian analysis. Thus, the Bayesian inference is more general. Linear models and models closely related to linear models will be assumed for the analysis of the observations which contain the information on the unknown parameters of the models. The models, which are presented, are well suited for a variety of tasks connected with the evaluation of data. When applications are considered, data will be analyzed which have been taken to solve problems of surveying engineering. This does not mean, of course, that the applications are restricted to geodesy. Bayesian statistics may be applied wherever data need to be evaluated, for instance in geophysics. After an introduction the basic concepts of Bayesian inference are presented in Chapter 2. Bayes' theorem is derived and the introduction of prior information for the unknown parameters is discussed. Estimates of the unknown parameters, of confidence regions and the testing of hypotheses are derived and the predictive analysis is treated. Finally techniques for the numerical integration of the integrals are presented which have to be solved for the statistical inference. Chapter 3 introduces models to analyze data for the statistical inference on the unknown parameters and deals with special applications. First the linear model is presented with noninformative and informative priors for the unknown parameters. The agreement with the results of the standard statistical techniques is pointed out. Furthermore, the prediction of data and the linear model not of full rank are discussed. A method for identifying a model is presented and a less sensitive hypothesis test for the standard statistical techniques is derived. The Kalman-Bucy filter for estimating unknown parameters of linear dynamic systems is also given. Nonlinear models are introduced and as an example the fit of a straight line is treated. The resulting posterior distribution for the unknown parameters is analytically not tractable, so that numerical methods have to be applied for the statistical inference. In contrast to the standard statistical techniques, the Bayesian analysis for mixed models does not discriminate between fixed and random parameters, it distinguishes the parameters according to their prior information. The Bayesian inference on the parameters, which correspond to the random parameters of the mixed model of the standard statistical techniques, is therefore readily accomplished. Noninformafive priors of the variance and covariance components are derived for the linear model with unknown variance and covariance components. In addition, informative priors are given. Again, the resulting posterior distributions are analytically not tractable, so that numerical methods have to be applied for the Bayesian inference. The problem of classification is solved by applying the Bayes rule, i.e. the posterior expected loss computed by the predictive density function of the observations is minimized. Robust estimates of the standard statistical techniques, which are maximum likelihood type estimates, the so-called M-estimates, may also be derived by Bayesian inference. But this approach not only leads to the M-estimates, but also any inferential problem for the parameters may be solved. Finally, the reconstruction of digital images is discussed. Numerous methods exist for the analysis of digital images. The Bayesian approach unites some of them and gives them a common theoretical foundation. This is due to the flexibility by which prior information for the unknown parameters can be introduced. It is assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge of the standard statistical techniques. Whenever these results are needed, for easy reference the appropriate page of the book "Parameter Estimation and Hypothesis Testing in Linear Models" by the author (Koch 1988a) is cited. Of course, any other textbook on statistical techniques can serve this purpose. To easily recognize the end of an example or a proof, it is marked by a A or a t~, respectively. I want to thank all colleagues and students who contributed to this book. In particular, I thank Mr. Andreas Busch, Dipl.-Ing., for his suggestions. I also convey my thanks to Mrs. Karin Bauer, who prepared the copy of the book. The assistance of the Springer- Verlag in checking the English text is gratefully acknowledged. The responsibility of errors, of course, remains with the author.

Description / Table of Contents: The present study will provide an introduction into the biomechanics of trees and will give a critical survey of the phylogeny and the constructional principles of the tree habit. Since the trunk is considered the basic and crucial element of a tree, the analysis is largely restricted to a functional comparison of the stem anatomy of the various tree forms. It is based on the concept of constructional morphology, thus considering simultaneously the functional aspect and the ontogenetical and phylogenetical development of the various trunk types. The main questions to be answered in this study are; Why do trees exist? - Which are the constructional principles of tree trunks and when and in which group of plants do they appear? - How important are internal (phylogenetic) and external (functional, constructional) constraints? - What are the specific properties of the different constructional principles and does a correlation between trunk design and growth habit exist? - Is there a tendency in phylogeny to a better performance? The study does not (and cannot) intend to provide a detailed biophysical analysis of individual cases because experimental data on the mechanical properties of the structural elements of the different kinds of trees are still lacking. Instead, it will he the task to evaluate in a comprehensive and qualitative or semi-quantitative manner the available data of the morphology, anatomy and phylogeny of fossil and recent trees by using concepts of biomechanics and constructional morphology. Thus a somewhat holistic approach is used, which is becoming increasingly more acceptable today.

Description / Table of Contents: In 1986, a mobility model was developed for predicting the traction and motion resistance of both wheeled and tracked vehicles on shallow snow, and a winter field season was dedicated to gathering mobility data for a diverse family of vehicles (including four on wheels and three tracked) to validate the model. The original version of the model, SSM 1.0, used the Mohr-Coulomb shear failure equation from soil mechanics to predict gross traction. This required input of the snow strength parameters c and ȹ. Motion resistance is predicted by calculating the amount of work done by the tire in compacting snow and only requires snow depth and density values as input snow properties. Some effort was expended in determining an easy and reliable method of obtaining snow strength established from past instrumented vehicle test results. Historically, shear annulus apparati have been used to obtain Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters. A comparison of snow strength obtained via these three methods (shear annulus, instrumented vehicle, calculated from initial density using the relationship in SSM 1.0) for individual snow covers showed no agreement. SSM 1.0 assumed that snow strength parameters for mobility prediction were a function of initial snow density; however, traction is developed in the compacted snow under the driving element, whose strength properties bore little relation to those of the initial snow. It appears that the shear strength of the compacted snow is essentially a constant for all of the vehicles and snow covers tested here. Based on this finding, a new traction algorithm was developed, resulting in the creation of a second generation model, SSM 2.0. This algorithm predicts gross traction, on the average for the vehicles tested, within 7% of the measured value. Motion resistance prediction remains unchanged in SSM 2.0. This quantity is still not predicted with a desirable level of accuracy.

Description / Table of Contents: This volume examines the processes responsible for sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments, and how such modern studies can be used as analogues in the interpretation of ancient glacimarine sequences. Sediments released from glaciers grounded in tidewater, floating ice shelves, ice tongues, icebergs and sea ice form complex sequences governed by glaciological, oceanographic, sedimentary and biogenic controls. Ten per cent of the world’s oceans and epicontinental seas contain such active glacimarine environments, but during Cenozoic glacial periods this area was doubled. This book will, therefore, be of relevance to all scientists concerned with high and middle latitude marine environments. The early chapters are concerned largely with processes of sedimentation in modern glacimarine environments; examples are drawn from Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Svalbard and Antarctica. Studies of ancient sequences, both Cenzoic and pre-Cenozoic, from the Barents Sea, Greenland, Sweden, Alaska and the northwest European continental shelf, form the latter part of the book.
