    Description: Arua como lugar estratégico para a observação da vida urbana no que esta tem de mais peculiar é o tema central deste livro. A proposta é simples e exploratoria: procurar diferentes aproximações a esta realidade complexa a partir do olhar da antropologia, da história, da sociología e da arquitectura, em contextos geográficos e temporais distintos. A rua surge como problema a identificar e como lugar privilegiado para a troca e circulação de saberes disciplinares. Enquanto imagem e símbolo de um modo de vida urbano, lugar onde ocorrem as sociabilidades mais “típicas” da cidade, a rua condensa e viabiliza todo um imaginário feito de discursos, memórias e emoções, que atravessam e elaboram simbolicamente a cidade naquilo que ela tem de mais original. Espaço, tempo e sociabilidade são apenas tres tópicos que ajudam a ler as contribuições da presente colectânea, cujos autores partilham urna preocupação fundamental: apreender a rua à escala de quem a vive, de perto e em situação... Na Paris popular oitocentista, nos actuais campos de refugiados ou na Lisboa dos séculos xix e xx, vamos ao encontro dos lugares da rua.

    Description: No ano de 2017, o Brasil se posicionou como o maior produtor mundial de cana-de-açúcar e de açúcar, e o segundo de etanol. O que explica essa constância da cana-de-açúcar e dos seus derivados nas pautas de produção e de exportação brasileiras? Quais são as condicionantes físicas que explicam a expansão dos canaviais e, consequentemente, das unidades manufatureiras e industriais do açúcar, etanol e agroenergia em certas regiões do território brasileiro? Como esses determinantes, associados a fatores históricos, políticos e econômicos, levaram a arranjos territoriais e a impactos socioambientais diferenciados ao longo desses cinco séculos? Essas indagações nortearam o desdobramento dos temas tratados neste livro, descortinando um longo processo iniciado no período colonial, que aglutinou enorme quantidade de variáveis de abrangência política, econômica, social e tecnológica, ancoradas nas características físicas, sobretudo hidroclimatológicas, dos solos e do relevo das áreas onde a cana-de-açúcar, os engenhos e as usinas foram implantados.

    Description: Em 1867, ao prefaciar uma das suas primeiras recolhas de literatura popular, Teófilo Braga, sugerindo uma imagem catastrófica da situação do país, referiu-se desta forma ao seu trabalho: "coligir a poesia popular portuguesa agora, no momento de transe, é como a garrafa ao mar que se atirava nos naufrágios: é para que se saiba que existiu este povo, que também sofreu e cantou". Tal sentimento nacionalista jamais viria a abandonar a sua obra antropológica, o que aliás se explica dada a matriz romântica em que ela assentava. E mesmo quando Teófilo Braga se orientou gradualmente para preocupações de cunho mais científico, isso não significou uma verdadeira ruptura com a perspectiva inicial. São pois os ecos da problemática da identidade nacional, na sua dupla vertente romântica e científica, que podemos reencontrar nestes Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português que, de resto, e independentemente do espírito com que foi concebida e realizada a sua colectânea, propõem ao leitor um conjunto de narrativas cujo fascínio permanece intacto, constituindo além disso um valiosíssimo acervo de informações em áreas que, como a Antropologia e a História das Mentalidades, se dão como objectivo a tarefa de reflectir sobre as múltiplas manifestações das sociedades tradicionais. Após termos procedido à publicação de O Povo Português nos Seus Costumes, Crenças e Tradições, também da autoria de Teófilo Braga, que tem sido considerada a primeira grande obra de conjunto da etnografia nacional, impunha-se esta reedição dos Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português, que decerto formam, juntamente com a recolha de Adolfo Coelho disponível nesta colecção, uma das mais importantes colectâneas de narrativas populares do nosso país. Também na presente reedição se manteve a divisão da obra em dois volumes, tal como sucedia na sua edição original.

    Description: “De que falamos quando falamos de corpo?” foi a pergunta feita aos participantes neste volume colectivo. O tema do corpo e da incorporação é dos mais actuais e polémicos nas ciências sociais e nas sociedades contemporâneas. Tratar-se-á apenas de uma moda temática? Ou é causa e efeito de novas formas de olhar a sociedade? Tratar-se-á de uma questão própria dos centros internacionais de produção do saber, bastando-nos importar a produção feita em seu torno? Ou as gerações recentes de antropólogos portugueses têm um contributo a dar? Estas foram as questões colocadas aos autores, a quem se pediu que revissem os seus materiais de pesquisa à luz dos temas do corpo e da incorporação. O resultado foi uma afirmação de pragmatismo, em que ganha sentido a complementaridade entre perspectivas centradas na estrutura social, nas classificações simbólicas e nas práticas agenciadas.

    Description: The overall focus, scope, and purpose of this Special Issue on outdoor adventure is to provide the current and anticipated future trends, offer innovative ideas for new programs, support decision making for managers to move plans and intentions into action, inspire pioneering staff training and leadership development, incite policy reviews and revisions, promote resource (re)allocation where needed, and stimulate culture shifts among outdoor leaders and managers. Furthermore, this Special Issue is situated within the existing literature by depicting major trends in the field, exploring organizational issues and successes, identifying gaps between research and practice, and formulating solutions to some of the field’s most pressing challenges.     Description: Eating Disorders have traditionally been considered apart from public health concerns about increasing obesity. It is evident that these problems are, however, related in important ways. Comorbid obesity and eating disorder is increasing at a faster rate than either obesity or eating disorders alone and one in five people with obesity also presents with an Eating Disorder, commonly but not limited to Binge Eating Disorder. New disorders have emerged such as normal weight or Atypical Anorexia Nervosa. However research and practice too often occurs in parallel with a failure to understand the weight disorder spectrum and consequences of co-morbidity that then contributes to poorer outcomes for people living with a larger size and an Eating Disorder. Urgently needed are trials that will inform more effective assessment, treatment and care where body size and eating disorder symptoms are both key to the research question.

    Description: Many people are increasingly concerned about economic inequality within their own nations, or between wealthy nations and poor ones. But is today's vast economic inequality best addressed by appeals to ethics, by altering social structures such as taxes and laws, or some combination of the two approaches? This volume brings together leading scholars from across the disciplines who believe today's extreme economic inequality threatens human flourishing and who are determined to address it using their own disciplinary tools. The broadly interdisciplinary volume incorporates contributions from fields as varied as theology, philosophy, economics, education, social work, sociology and law. Our work together illustrates how incorporating a variety of perspectives in a conversation enriches religious and ethical reflection on a significant social ill, and how quantitative and secular fields can help offer practical solutions to contemporary ethical problems.

    Description: This open access book provides insight into what it takes to actively involve teachers in the curriculum design process. It examines different aspects of teacher involvement in collaborative curriculum design, with specific attention to its implications for sustainable curriculum innovation and teacher learning. Divided into six sections, the book starts out by introducing the notion of collaborative curriculum design and discusses its historical and theoretical foundations. It describes various approaches commonly adopted to actively involve teachers in the (co-)design of curriculum materials. Sections two and three provide examples of what key phases in the curriculum design process - such as needs analysis, design and development, and implementation - look like across various collaborative curriculum design projects. Section four reports on the impact of collaborative curriculum design on student learning, teacher practices, teacher professional growth, and institutional change. Building on the research evidence about the outcomes of collaborative curriculum design, section five focuses on sustainability, scaling-up and curriculum leadership issues, which are key to the continuation and further evolution of curriculum innovations. Future perspectives are addressed in section six with emphasis on the infrastructure of a sustainable curriculum innovation.

    Description: Since 2017, the United States and Europe—among many other refugee-hosting countries—have made significant changes in their refugee policies. New visa restrictions, travel bans, and other regulations were imposed by national governments. At the local level, towns and cities responded in different ways: some resisted national policy by declaring themselves “sanctuary cities”, while others supported exclusionary policies. These different responses influenced refugees’ ability to settle and become integrated. The Refugees in Towns (RIT) project at Tufts University explores local urban integration experiences, drawing on the knowledge and perspectives of refugees and citizens in towns around the world. Since 2017, more than 30 RIT case studies have deepened our local knowledge about the factors that enable or obstruct integration, and the ways in which migrants and hosts co-exist, adapt, and struggle with integration. In this Special Issue, seven articles explore urban integration in towns in Europe (Frankfurt-Rödelheim, Germany; Newcastle, UK; Ambertois, France; Italy’s cities; and Belgrade, Serbia) and in North America: Bhutanese refugee-hosting US cities, and Antigonish, Canada. The papers explore how refugees and citizens interact; the role of officials and politicians in enabling or obstructing integration; the social, economic, and cultural impact of migration; and the ways—inclusive or exclusive—locals have responded.

    Description: O tema deste livro é o processo de formação cultural dos jovens integrantes do assentamento Mário Lago, construído através da luta de famílias de trabalhadores que formam a base de mobilização do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, MST, no município de Ribeirão Preto-SP, auto-denominado "capital nacional do agronegócio", em razão de sua projeção nacional e internacional através do complexo de atividades econômicas vinculadas ao contexto da produção agro-industrial. A análise desenvolvida na obra pressupõe os jovens como sujeitos dos processos abertos pela luta política em torno da terra e interlocutores dos grupos com os quais convivem, configurando sua consciência perante o que experimentam no cotidiano. Além disso, identifica as referências ético-políticas construídas junto à comunidade e junto ao MST, os constrangimentos presentes em suas vidas, constituídos pelos limites objetivos e subjetivos da luta, bem como sua capacidade de projetar o futuro.

As a result, when advances in sophisticated information and communication technology (ICT) led to the emergence of a rich body of research on smart cities, the application and usability of ICT in the context of a village has remained underdiscussed in the literature. Against this backdrop, this volume delivers on four objectives. It delineates the conceptual boundaries of the concept of ‘smart village’.     Description: At this time in world history, numerous scholars have emphasized the importance of having greater diversity in leadership, and specifically having greater representation by women in leadership. In particular, providing women with greater access to higher education—and having role models for women in higher education leadership—has a beneficial ripple effect, given that postsecondary institutions shape the lives of future generations. Individuals, nations, and the world collectively pay a price when women are not given full opportunities to develop and contribute their talents by serving on senior-level leadership teams. This Special Issue, titled “Perspectives on Women’s Higher Education Leadership From Around the World,” offers an array of articles that present research findings from both qualitative and quantitative studies, along with narratives and best practices gleaned from the lived experiences of women in academic leadership from countries on four continents: the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, India, China, and Saudi Arabia. Taken together, these articles offer a helpful overview of the literature related to women in higher education leadership worldwide, thus addressing previous concerns that much of the research has too often taken a Western perspective that reflects inaccurate assumptions for other cultural contexts.

    Description: Theodor Mommsen aveva ventisette anni nel 1844, quando giunse la prima volta in Italia, dando inizio alla straordinaria avventura epigrafica che l’avrebbe condotto a pubblicare le Inscriptiones Regni Neapolitani Latinae (1852) e quindi alla progettazione del Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. Marie-René de La Blanchère (Tours, 17 febbraio 1853 - Parigi, 30 maggio 1896) ne aveva ventisei nel ’79, al momento dell’arrivo presso la neonata École française de Rome con l’obiettivo di indagare le antichità della regione pontina: iniziava allora una contrastata (e per certi versi drammatica) vicenda di vita e di ricerca, il cui principale frutto resta il “saggio di storia locale” su Terracine (1884), preceduto e seguito da importanti contributi sul Latium adiectum e l’Africa romana; nel 1885 l’Autore si sarebbe trasferito in Tunisia, dove divenne protagonista della vasta opera di studio e salvaguardia delle antichità locali, culminata nella fondazione del Museo del Bardo. Questo libro raccoglie gli atti del convegno internazionale Dalle terre pontine all’Africa romana: Marie-René de La Blanchère, archeologo, epigrafista, orientalista (San Felice Circeo, 3-4 giugno 2016), organizzato dall’École francaise de Rome e dal Comune di San Felice Circeo (LT) in sinergia con la Soprintendenza archeologica del Lazio Meridionale, con “Sapienza” Università di Roma e l’Università della Tuscia di Viterbo. Nel ripercorrere le tappe della carriera scientifica di La Blanchère, il volume – arricchito dalla prima bibliografia sistematica degli scritti dell’Autore – affronta alcuni momenti chiave della politica culturale della Francia di fine Ottocento, sullo sfondo della virtuosa competizione tra le istituzioni archeologiche europee in Italia, soffermandosi in particolare sulle tappe della ‘scoperta’ delle antichità del Lazio meridionale, negli anni in cui si compiva la titanica impresa dei volumi IX e X del CIL (1883).

    Description: The Maronite Library of Aleppo houses one of the most important collections of manuscripts in the Syrian Arab Republic. Comprising more than 1600 copies, the collection contains many different works on Bible, theology, philosophy, history, grammar, literature and sciences, and a great variety of other subjects. The contents of the Library have long been known to Western researchers, but were never fully catalogued. This work seeks to remedy that situation, as the last in a series of three inventories. The first volume (2008) presented a detailed record and description of the Syriac manuscripts held in the Library, and the second one (2011) did the same for those in Karshuni. Following the model established by those two previous publications, this book presents the Arabic manuscripts of the collection. The author offers a short, concise description of each copy, including title or titles, names of the author and copyist, place and date of the copy, and any formal features useful in the proper identification of the manuscripts. This edition also includes 50 images, and full indices of titles, personal names and places.

    Description: After the impact of the 2007 crisis and post-crisis austerity policies, cities are being reconfigured under the auspices of inequality. The objective of this book is to study inequality in the city at different scales and in all territories, from informal settlements and the “urbanization of poverty” in the countries of the South, to the fragmentation of the city or urban segregation as global phenomena in 21st century cities. In line with this, we propose introducing new debates on the city and inequality linked to social movements, urban governance, and the access to and quality of drinking water, among other topics.     Description: Despite positive attitudes towards mathematics, it must be assumed that mathematics anxiety is a factor not to be underestimated in (pre-service) early childhood teachers. In the first part, this article reviews the current international state of research on early childhood teachers’ mathematics anxiety and shows the achievements and limitations of previous studies. The majority of the reviewed studies deals with pre-service early childhood teachers and their teacher education. Only a few studies tried to relate in-service early childhood teachers’ mathematics anxiety and children’s mathematical achievement. In the second part, this contribution examines empirically whether it can be assumed that the profession “early childhood teacher” can be characterized as “math-avoidant”. For this purpose, n = 774 German pre-service early childhood teachers were examined with regard to their mathematics anxiety and their choice of career. The results indicate effects of mathematics anxiety on the intentional choice to work as an early childhood teacher. The paper concludes with a general conclusion on the importance of mathematics anxiety for early childhood teachers’ professional competence and an outlook on future research.

    Description: Para perceber em toda a sua complexidade como é que as grandes empresas portuguesas se relacionam com as grandes famílias que são suas proprietárias era necessário optar por urna metodologia etnográfica. O presente livro é exemplo de como um estudo intensivo de um número de casos relativamente pequeno, pode bem ser mais revelador do que estudos que, sendo mais abrangentes em termos numéricos, estão dependentes de modelos de interpretação menos intensivos. A elite que Maria Antónia Pedroso de Lima caracteriza corresponde ao contexto social de maior acumulação de riqueza a nível nacional português e até a nível internacional. Contudo, não poderíamos afirmar que se trata da elite portuguesa, já que a vida política e cultural portuguesa contemporânea é controlada por outros sectores sociais cuja radicação social nas classes medias profissionais é bem distinta da destas famílias empresariais. O relativo distanciamento destas famílias dos meios políticos e mediáticos nacionais posiciona-as numa espécie de marginalidade superior por relação aos contextos hegemónicos dominantes na sociedade portuguesa contemporânea.     Description: How and Why to Read and Create Children's Digital Books outlines effective ways of using digital books in early years and primary classrooms, and specifies the educational potential of using digital books and apps in physical spaces and virtual communities. With a particular focus on apps and personalised reading, Natalia Kucirkova combines theory and practice to argue that personalised reading is only truly personalised when it is created or co-created by reading communities. Divided into two parts, Part I suggests criteria to evaluate the educational quality of digital books and practical strategies for their use in the classroom. Specific attention is paid to the ways in which digital books can support individual children’s strengths and difficulties, digital literacies, language and communication skills.     Description: Higher education has been considered both an ‘engine’ for innovation and a ‘catalyst’ for sustainability development; the integration of both the innovation engine and sustainability catalyst roles are discussed in a recently published Special Issue on the theme of Higher Education in Innovation Ecosystems in the journal Sustainability. Based on 16 articles contributing to the Special Issue from various perspectives, the Special Issue editors have developed an overarching framework about the relationships between higher education and innovation ecosystems. In the framework, we re-define the concept of innovation ecosystem and identify emerging roles of universities in developing sustainable innovation ecosystems. Re-conceptualization of innovation ecosystems In the editorial of the Special Issue, innovation ecosystem is defined as: co-innovation networks in which actors from organizations concerned with the functions of knowledge production, wealth creation, and norm control interact with each other in forming co-evolution and interdependent relations (both direct or indirect) in cross-geographical contexts and through which new ideas and approaches from various internal and external sources are integrated into a platform to generate shared values for the sustainable transformation of society. Compared with most commonly cited definitions of innovation ecosystem, our definition highlights three new aspects of interactions in co-innovation networks: cross-sectoral, transnational, and indirect, drawing insights from the literature including innovation, geography, and biology studies. The roles of universities in innovation ecosystems The emerging roles of universities in innovation ecosystems are as follows: (1) The role of universities is changing from being a central player in technology transfer to being an anchor in knowledge exchange; (2) universities are assuming a new role in trust-building between actors in innovation ecosystems; and (3) universities are not merely an entrepreneurial universities but are also institutional entrepreneur in the innovation ecosystem. The three emerging roles all indicate that universities are becoming the catalysts for sustainable development in innovation ecosystems. Knowledge exchange is crucial for sustainability; trust is the foundation of the sustainable networks; social entrepreneurship is indispensable for sustainable social change. Evidence in wider contexts A total of 44 authors from 10 countries contributed to the discussions on the changing roles of higher education in innovation ecosystems from varying perspectives. They also report transformations within higher education and universities’ responses to both external and internal transformations. When addressing these issues, the studies provide both theoretical and methodological contributions to the research on higher education in innovation ecosystems. The 16 articles can be generally placed into four categories: (1) new demands for universities arising from the transformation in society toward innovation ecosystems, (2) transformations within higher education responding to emerging societal demands, (3) dynamics of the interaction of university with other innovation actors in a transnational context, and (4) academic and student mobility for higher education innovation. Calling for a new research agenda While societal changes demand broader roles of universities, they also call for and leads to substantial changes within the internal fabric of the university. The innovations in both society and the universities necessitate a renewed understanding of higher education in society, which has become a new research agenda in studies on innovation in higher education. We hope our Special Issue will inspire and encourage more scholars to join the research field.

    Description: The volume is an original contribution to the debate on interventions in favour of gender equality in universities and in research. The book presents the results of the research-action carried out together with the experimentation of the pilot mentoring program, within the European project GENOVATE@UNINA. By establishing a dialogue with the latest European researches - developed in the cultural context and in the framework for structural change interventions, promoted through the Seventh Framework Program and Horizon 2020 – this work assumes, as an interpretative framework, the processes of global change that involve the settings of the scientific-academic system. The discussion develops along a linear pathway, moving from the debate on gender equality policies, it leads to the design of the mentoring pilot scheme (the first one to be exclusively women addressed, in the Italian universities) and, therefore, the research that has accompanied the project on its path is also described. The interpretation of results, supported by biographical-narrative interviews on career paths and focus groups with mentors and mentees, reveals through which practices and processes are produced and reproduced gender inequalities in academia and research. Using the tools of the survey, these results have been analysed in order to reconstruct the mentoring functioning as a gender practice capable of de-construct processes that produce inequality and produce transformational effects of the scientific-academic context.

The ways that they are depicted, however, are severely limited in physical and personal traits, helping to establish and enhance stereotypes under the general title of ‘scientist’. These stereotypes range from the arrogant researcher who wants to rule the world, to the lab coat wearing ‘nerdy’ genius, but all generally fall to an extreme view of an existing perception of what a scientist should look and be like. For example, the popular image of ‘a scientist’ overlooks the presence of women almost entirely unless attributed to specific subjects and/or with narrow character depictions. The implications can be far-reaching. Young people, being heavily swayed by what they see and hear in the media, may avoid scientific careers because of these limited or unflattering portrayals of the scientific community, regardless of whether they reflect real life. Based on findings from the Light’13 project, this book examines such stereotypes and questions whether it is possible to adjust people’s perception of scientists and to increase interest in science and scientific careers through a series of specific actions and events."

Com base no relevo que tem nas Festas do Espírito Santo um conjunto muito diversificado de dádivas e contra-dádivas de alimentos cerimoniais, o autor propõe uma interpretação do ritual assente na consideração simultânea da sua dimensão religiosa, da sua relação com os principais círculos de relacionamento social e do vínculo que ele exibe com as formas de conceptualização do tempo nas comunidades estudadas. Aspectos controversos como a procura de prestígio individual através das despesas requeridas pelos festejos ou as relações entre povo e clero em torno do ritual são também examinados. Pela natureza dos problemas discutidos, As Festas do Espírito Santo nos Açores constitui não apenas uma contribuição para uma Antropologia Social do arquipélago, mas uma oportunidade para o reexame de alguns dossiers mais genéricos relacionados com o estudo antropológico das comunidades rurais em domínio europeu.

    Description: Urban heritage took four hundred years to establish itself as a cultural asset to be safeguarded and evolved along an historicalsocial process, rooted in the idea that urban sets and monumental architecture are part of the same category of historical values. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the notion of heritage stretched up and reached an urban dimension, but its social and political understanding did not release itself from theories and practices of intervention and safeguard action established within the architectural dimension from which came from. Aiming to contain change, they continue to resist to accept that change it is part of the nature of cities and to integrate it into the very meaning of the urban dimension of heritage. After all, of what do we talk about when we talk about urban heritage? Arising from various stimuli, this question guided the texts gathered here. They were written with different disciplinary perspectives because the measure that differentiates the urban dimension of heritage and architectural dimension is not metric or geometric. It is ontological and can only be understood in an integrated manner. In development, of course.

Therefore, higher education institutions (HEIs) are also called upon to deal theoretically, conceptually, methodically, critically, and reflectively with the associated challenges and the processes and conditions of transformation in order to contribute to sustainable development. How can complex organisations such as HEIs succeed in initiating and maintaining the process of sustainable development within their own institutions and make it a permanent responsibility? How can as many protagonists as possible be persuaded to get involved in sustainable development? This book deals with the promotion of sustainable university development and provides an overview of how universities can be organised sustainably and how sustainable development can be implemented in their various functional areas. In the sense of a “whole-institution approach”, which encompasses entire HEIs, the focus is not only on the core areas of teaching (higher education for sustainable development) and research (sustainability in research) but, also, on the operational management of HEIs.     Description: This Open Access book presents an international group of scholars seeking to understand how youth from different cultures relate to modern multidimensional concepts of citizenship, and the roles that education and society have in shaping the views of the world’s future citizens. The book also explores how different aspects of citizenship, such as attitudes towards diverse population groups and concerns for social issues, relate to classical definitions of norm-based citizenship from the political sciences. Authors from Asia, Europe, and Latin America provide a series of in-depth investigations into how concepts of “good citizenship” are shaped in different regions of the globe, using the rich comparative data from the IEA’s International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) 2016. In twelve chapters, the authors review the concept of “good citizenship”; how citizenship norms adherence is configured into profiles across countries; and what country, school, and background factors are related to how students adhere to citizenship norms. Recognizing contingent social and political situations in specific regions of the world, the present books offer six chapters where authors apply their expertise to offer locally relevant and pertinent observations on how young people from diverse cultures understand and relate to different dimensions of citizenship in countries of Asia, Europe, and Latin America.     Description: Cyberbullying has emerged as a major issue across societies and for schools, parents, children, and national governments (see Smith and Steffgen, 2013). Despite some similarities with traditional, or face-to-face (f2f) bullying (Mc Guckin, Cummins and Lewis, 2010), there is sufficient difference to warrant this contemporary and detailed examination of the issues related to cyberbullying—from a perspective that draws upon the most pertinent research and informed opinion from key researchers and thinkers from across the globe. The initial and pioneering knowledge about cyberbullying has now moved to a newer, more mature position that has been able to delineate the nuances associated with the issue, and importantly, yield robust insights for those involved in, or tasked to deal with, cyberbullying. This Special Issue brings together a collection of papers that represents the most up-to-date perspectives and evidence from across the globe. [In recent years, advanced nanocomposites have attracted a great deal of attention from materials engineers and industrialists due to numerous advantages, including the use of a small amount of nanofillers to significantly enhance the material properties of resulting nanocomposites, widespread applications in a range of fields, such as automobiles, aerospace and aerocrafts, building structures, biomedical devices, etc., as well as easy processibility based on current manufacturing technologies, such as melt compounding, solution casting, in situ polymerisation and electrospinning. Advanced nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxides (GOs), nanoclays, nanocellulose, and nanofibres demonstrate excellent multifunctional properties, consisting of better mechanical, thermal, electrical, and barrier properties. The key issue is still the encountered challenge of homogeneous filler dispersion in morphological structures for tailored advanced nanocomposites. Hence, processing-structure-property nanocomposite relationship is crucial for their future development as innovative hybrid material systems. This Special Issue will address above-mentioned points in relation to manufacturing, characterisation, and properties of advanced nanocomposites to offer an insight into this new composite family with the incorporation of nanofillers, nanoparticles, and nanomaterials in order to eventually achieve the nanotechnological "bottom-up" scheme.

    Description: *THIS BOOK WILL SOON BECOME AVAILABLE AS OPEN ACCESS BOOK* This book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In August 2012, a workshop of the Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Costa Rica. This CANP brought together for two weeks a group of 66 Mathematics educators, mathematicians, university administrators, and elementary and secondary teachers from Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panamá and Costa Rica. The goal was to promote progress in Mathematics Education in the region; as such it was a unique experience in the region. One of the most important results of this event was the creation of the Mathematics Education Network of Central America and the Caribbean (REDUMATE). It was organized by persons associated with the Mathematics Education Reform Project in Costa Rica (responsible for the most outstanding and innovative curriculum reform in Latin America) and the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (IACME), which is an official regional multinational organization affiliate of ICMI. This book brings to the international Educational Community an important collection of experiences and ideas in the Mathematics Education of four countries of a region within the heart of the American continent, a region that has been many times forgotten. The dissemination of these results can promote the search for international collaborative actions in a wider scale.

    Description: This open access book analyzes barriers to inclusion in academia and details ways to create a more diverse, inclusive environment. It describes the implementation of UC Davis ADVANCE, a grant program funded by the National Science Foundation, to increase the hiring and retention of underrepresented scholars in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and foster a culture of inclusion for all faculty. It first describes what the barriers to inclusion are and how they function within the broader society. A key focus here is the concept of implicit bias: what it is, how it develops, and the importance of training organizational members to recognize and challenge it. It then discusses the limitations of data collection that is guided by the convention assumption that being diverse automatically means being inclusive. Lastly, it highlights the importance of creating a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and institution-wide vision of an inclusive community.

    Description: O espaço pode ser entendido como uma mediação interativa entre as formas do ambiente construído, resultantes da transformação da natureza, e a vida social que as anima, cuja dinâmica de produção articula dialeticamente as dimensões do percebido, do concebido e do vivido. Assim, o processo de produção e os modos de apropriação do espaço metropolitano de Brasília são os focos de presente análise. Como a configuração espacial de Brasília, marcada pelas descontinuidades do tecido metropolitano e pelas grandes distâncias delas decorrentes, influencia no uso do espaço-tempo quotidiano por parte dos habitantes de sua periferia goiana e oferece possibilidades e/ou limites à realização do direito à cidade? Para responder a essa questão, a realidade da metrópole é discutida em dois aspectos principais: um primeiro, concernente à compreensão do espaço metropolitano como produto sócio-histórico, resultado da concepção dos elaboradores do projeto de construção de uma nova capital para o Brasil e da prática espacial - deles e daqueles que se apropriam desse espaço, também atuando em sua produção - que resultou naquilo que hoje conhecemos como Brasília e seu espaço metropolitano; e um segundo, atinente à passagem da análise do plano discursivo ao plenamente vivido, ou seja, a partir da demonstração, por meio de ideias, conceitos, informações e constatações, de qual espaço metropolitano se trata, busca-se adentrar esse espaço à escala do quotidiano a fim de tentar mostrar o espaço vivido: aquele do qual se apropriam os habitantes de uma periferia distante e supostamente menos integrada que são, na verdade, parte constituinte da metrópole.

    Description: Since the 1990s, internationalisation has become key for institutions wishing to secure funding for higher education and research. For the academic community, this strategic shift has had many consequences. Priorities have changed and been influenced by new ways of thinking about universities, and of measuring their impact in relation to each other and to their social goals. Debates are ongoing and hotly contested. In this collection, a mix of renowned academics and newer voices reflect on some of the realities of international research partnerships. They both question and highlight the agency of academics, donors and research institutions in the geopolitics of knowledge and power. The contributors offer fresh insights on institutional transformation, the setting of research agendas, and access to research funding, while highlighting the dilemmas researchers face when their institutions are vulnerable to state and donor influence.     Description: Sia all'interno del dibattito accademico che della retorica politica si discute molto di sicurezza urbana. Ciononostante, resta ancora da esplorare in che modo la “sicurezza urbana” possa differen­ziarsi da altre forme di sicurezza. Questo volume serve a porre le basi per analisi e studi futuri che abbiano l'obiettivo specifico di comprendere se, e quando, i contesti cittadini influenzino il fenomeno della sicurezza, al punto tale da doverla declinare nella sua accezione “urbana”. Gli autori dei saggi hanno cercato di rispondere ad una o più delle seguenti domande: in che modo il contesto urbano determina le espressioni più visibili e quelle meno facilmente individuabili di fenomeni quali criminalità, violenza, disordine e conflitto? Quali sono gli attori sociali che, all'interno delle città, influenzano maggiormente le pratiche di controllo per contrastare o diminuire tali fenomeni? Quali conflitti sociali emergono come conseguenza diretta delle pratiche di controllo dispiegate dentro le città? Nel fare ciò, ogni saggio prende in considerazione le specificità delle città in analisi per spiegare come queste determinano ed influenzano tali pratiche di controllo.
