Description: Starting from the fen (low moor) genesis according to ecohydrological View it has been examined, whether and how fen can be rewetted for renaturation or regeneration. There are no experiments or researches about that. Therefore it is necessary to look back to the traditional experiences and knowledges of the irrigation in agriculture for grass-plain (cultivation of meadows). For that it has to be distinguished between submersion irrigation, flooding irrigation, flooding from ditches, border irrigation, and contour ditch irrigation; qualification and condition are specified in table 2.

Description: Rewetting requires an impermeable layer of undisturbed raised-bog peat. For static conditions calculations of seepage dependent on the thickness of the impermeable layer have been carried out by means of representative data of saturated water permeability. The results of these model calculations are: 1. An increase of the impermeable ayer over 0,5 m insignificantly reduces the seepage. 2. Only a degree of decomposition H 2:7 according to v. POST causes a sufficient water rise. 3. An impermeable layer of highly decomposed raised-bog peat can be destroyed by crack formation after drying up. Therefore, the thickness of this layer should not be less than 0,5 m. A top spit or white peat layer of at least 0,3 m is required to prevent evaporation. 4. Under unfavourable climatic conditions contact of the impermeable layer with the ground water is necessary.

Description: Slightly humified Sphagnum peat is a valuable resource that is difficult to be substituted in professional horticulture. In West- and Central Europe, the stocks are nearly exhausted and peat is increasingly imported. At the long run, Sphagnum moss peat and virgin Sphagnum bogs may only survive in nature reserves or in areas that are technically and commercially inaccessible. Time has, therefore, come for peat extraction to develop into sustainable peat cultivation: paludiculture. Experiences with Sphagnum-harvesting and restoration of cut-over bogs indicate that a rotation culture of young Sphagnum peat is technically possible. A future paludiculture implies the identification of optimal conditions and Sphagnum taxa for peat accumulation, the development of adequate cultivation and retrieval techniques, an estimation of necessary areas and economics, and an assessment of possible positive and negative side effects. This paper presents a review of these aspects. Suitable areas for paludiculture in Central-Europe may include cut-over bogs and other exhausted open-cast mining areas.

Description: The development of peat soils out of low moor peat and high moor peat depends on the method of cultivation and runs different quickly. It results at least in unfavourable physical conditions and favourable chemical conditions. Therefore after a first cultivation Within several years other methods of recultivation are necessary to keep a stand for plants with modern way of agricultural produce. Suitable methods of recultivation are presented: For flat low moor soils deep ploughing and sand covering method (,,Tiefpflugsanddeckkultur“), the German Cultivation of peat by mixing With sand („Deutsche Sandmischkultur“) for aged German High bog cultivation as well as for industrial cut off bogs. Both methods of recultivation aim at the increase of yield and security of arable land. For transitory use the minimum tillage is to be proved. To avoid water surplus caused by insufficient draining of gravitational water a special method of slitting crumbs of peat soils and forming a mole drain have been approved.

Description: It is reported on experiences with German sand-mix-culture soils within 50 years. The soil-forming processes − subsidence, homogenization, humification − are correlated with the development of the yields. The corresponding degrees of soil development − from a rough mixture of peat and sand to a ± humic sandy soil − can be shown by soil-chemical analyses like separation of particles with different densities in CCl4, C/N-ratio, N-fractionation, actual/potential CEC. Such investigations can be useful for the actual estimation of new cultures and the control of their development.

Description: The rehabilitation of hypertrophied shallow lakes in which more and more sludge accumulates will be successful only if the nutrient input from different sources might be reduced. During their formation by sedimentation and subsequent peat formation or peat formation on paludified soils fens are a sink for nutrient accumulating in the peat. Due to increasing drainage and intense farming they become however a source of remineralized nutrients. Based on long-term trials of the Institute for Soil Technology Bremen an account is given of the remineralizable quantities of NO3-N and PO4-P. More nutrients are mineralized by intense agricultural use of fen soils than might be withdrawn annually even by permanent grassland. Considering the relatively low leaching of nitrate and phosphate the importance of N-incorporation during humification as well as the denitrification during peat decomposition is discussed. The P-leaching from fen soils into the ground water is similarly low as in mineral soils. The main task is above all to avoid a transfer into surface waters by erosion. Soil and water conservation means conservation of the peat substance. This demands a restricted intensity of land use.

Description: Ditches cut into the sandy subsoil impede a rewetting of cutover peatlands. Different materials (black peat, top spit, bentonite)were tested for their suitability of sealing these ditches. Different sealing processes were examined - compaction of the material, - secondary sealing of the sandy subsoil by clogging with infiltrated material. The treatments "black peat-compacted" and "sand/bentonite-mixture"showed the best sealing properties. Secondary sealing by mechanical filtering was also observed for some other materials ("black peat-suspension", "top spit"), however the process of mechanical filtering is too ineffective in the short-term view (~10 years).

Description: Roots investigations of surface layer were made in a fen and a bog. The volume of the roots of species Deschampsia caespitosa and Narthecium ossifragum were determined. A typical root-distribution was found for each species. The greatest volume of the roots showed Narthecium ossifragum, which growed in a bog. The decrease of the roots occures both proportionately and disproportionately. The maximum appears in the uppermost layer. In this layer prevailed roots in horizontal direction of Descbampsia caespitosa and in vertical direction of Narthecium ossifmgum. Only living rotts were inquired.

Description: Results of a 60 years long field trial on cultivated raised-bog under grassland are discussed: The pH-value of cultivated raised-bog should be rised to 4,0-4,5 (CaCl2) when grassland farming. Best effects are given by alkaline fertilizing, thereby the pH-value can be nearly conserved, on the other hand acid fertilizing effects sinking of the pH-value. Alkaline fertilizing causes more intense humification rates up to 10% compared with acid fertilizing. The peat soil of the crumb becomes similar to fen peat and the decomposition increases. The sorption capacity of these peat soils is very high. A content of 5-7 mg P2O5 and 5-7 mg K2O per 100 ml is sufficient for the top soil; when fertilizing more phosphate and potassium their leaching increases.

Description: Alaska carries a great variety of wetland plant communities, above all the Alaska Peninsula is very rich in mires. One of these mire complexes (muskeg) in the vicinity of the Mt. Peulic Lodge (Lake Ugashik) was investigated by vegetation studies and documented by phytosociological relevés according to the principles of the BRAUN-BLANQUET-school. The mire vegetation was dominated by dwarf shrubs, sedges, and mosses. 9 different vegetation types were ascertained on the basis of topography and floristical composition. These were blanket bog-like structures, elavated hummocks, lateral sites of hummocks, interspersed runnels and hollows, game pathes, two different types of flat mosscarpets, lawn-like vegetation structures, and plant associations of small pools.
