Description: A Catalogue of 18th-Century Symphonies makes possible for the first time a comprehensive view of one of the largest and most significant repertories in the history of music. Until now, no one has known for certain who wrote what, and hundreds of symphonies have been attributed in manuscript and printed sources to two or more composers. Under these conditions no reliable history of the symphony could be written. Now, thanks to Jan LaRue·s indefatigable efforts, we know how many symphonies have survived from the eighteenth century, where they are, their composers, and how many each composer wrote; and we can see at a glance the favorite keys, movement sequences, and instrumental combinations that were used. Volume I, Thematic Identifier, enables the user to identify more than 13,000 symphonies by means of the note names of the opening bars of the first violin part. This powerful reference tool also tells whether a particular symphony exists anywhere under a different name and whether there are any anonymous sources for the work. Volume II, Composers' Worklists, will provide detailed information for all the symphonies attributed to a particular composer in Volume I. With this indispensable bibliographic resource, Jan LaRue has established a solid foundation for public reference, performance, recording, and future research.

Description: Artists in Revolution offers fresh and provocative essays on the life and art of eight leading figures of the Russian avant-garde during Russia's revolutionary age. Each of the artists made highly innovative contributions to the development of Russian (and some, indeed, to world) cultureduring this period, and the book utilizes both the traditional approaches of intellectual history and biography and some statistical and psychohistorical characterizations of larger groups of artists.

Description: Deeply religious, steadfast in battle, instinctively deferential to his officers—this was the established image of the Russian soldier at the time of the revolution of 1905. The Russian army's principal role in that upheaval, it is generally believed, was the suppression of civil disorder. Challenging this conventional wisdom, John Bushnell's startling study shows that the army itself was in a state of rebellion.

Description: China's cultural revolution of the 1960s had an important precedent in the Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan, when established authorities and institutions in culture and the professions came under attack from militant Communist intellectuals. One of the most challenging questions for the student ofthis turbulent era is the actual nature of the revolution. Was it "revolution from above," initiated and controlled by the Party leadership, or "revolution from below," brought on by Marxist radicals within the cultural professions and pressure from an upwardly mobile working class? This important book, focused on the transition from NEP to Stalinism, presents both sides of the vigrous current debate.

Description: The purpose of this book is to tell the story of the emergency and evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and the evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and their experiences during the first four years of their existence. What is shown is that, in spite of restrictions placed on their activity, they developed extremely rapidly. It became obvious that there was a reserve of entrepreneurial talents ready to be liberated. What developed, however, over the four-year period 1987–1990 was not private enterprise in the full Western sense of the term; not all of the cooperatives were free-standing, independent organizations. On the contrary, what developed were also forms that combined the state and private sectors in a variety of ways.

Description: The author achieves a dual purpose in this volume: "To portray the mind of the master, his peculiarly anachronistic culture in an epoch of change," and "to trace Bach's application of venerable philosophies—musical as well as theological—to a musical equipment technically so much in advance of his time." Mr. Chiapusso accordingly explores Bach's Lutheran education, the philosophers and writers available to him, and the influence of scientific thought on his faith and work. He finds that at the dawn of the Enlightenment, when traditional culture was giving way to new ideas, Bach retained an essentially medieval world view, exercising his art "for the glory of God." An understanding of this world view is essential, Mr. Chiapusso demonstrates, to the full appreciation of Bach's music, its spiritual foundations, and its impressive technical innovations. In this context the author goes on to examine such problems as Bach's attitude toward instrumentation, his ornamentation, his use of symbolism, his use of secular music in the church, and his borrowing of ecclesiastical music for secular purposes. A valuable addition to the history of music and ideas.

Description: In the early 1960s, searching for a fresh style and a new way of bringing their words to the Soviet public, a number of Russian poets began singing their verse to their own solo accompaniment on the traditional seven-stringed guitar. At about the same time, tape recorders became widely available in the USSR. Privately recorded and circulated on tape—a process called magnitizdat—guitar poetry quickly became the most popular form of dissident culture in the post-Stalin period. The guitar poets and their songs are known and loved throughout the USSR. Songs to Seven Strings is the first book in any language about this unusual literary genre. Smith places guitar poetry within the context of official "mass song"; "middle ground" songs, where official and unofficial cultures overlap; and the strong underground traditions of the gypsy song, cruel romance, and criminal song.

Description: The career of Constantine P. Pobedonostsev is immensely important to an understanding of what has happened in Russia during the past century. Known to historians as the arch-reactionary of nineteenth-century Russia and the man most responsible for the repressive policies of Tsar Alexander III, Pobedonostsev's influence extended well beyond his own lifetime. A bureaucrat, legal scholar, editor, propagandist, tutor, and advisor to the last two tsars, theologian and powerful religious leader, Pobedonostsev left his imprint on nearly every aspect of Russian life. In the political realm, his savage opposition to moderate reform crushed early efforts at constitutional government, helped prepare the climate for revolution, and profoundly affected the course of history under the Soviets. As a philosopher, he represents the mainstream of Russian intellectual history during the nineteenth century.

Description: Chin p'ing mei, the late Ming dynasty novel, combines rich sensuous detail with an interweaving of reality and fantasy to create a telling portrait of the dynasty's decline. In addition to the explicit sexual detail, the novel also contains a stern Confucian message about the retribution to be expected from decline. Professor Garlitz analyzes the author's varied techniques, the dominant concerns of late Ming China (such as the relationship between family and state, the individual's need for self-knowledge and self-cultivation), and the verbal and narrative structure. Where Chin p'ing mei draws on late Ming popular religion, or quotes drama and song, or incorporates portions of earlier novels and tales, the effect is always the same: hypocrisy and complacency are exposed, facile solutions to difficult moral problems are rejected, and traditional Confucian judgments are affirmed.

Description: The iconoclastic theories of the Russian revolutionist and socialist feminist Aleksandra Kollontai (1872–1952) will strike many readers as startlingly contemporary. It is hardly surprising that her life and writings, only recently rediscovered by readers outside Russia, have profoundly influenced many Western radical feminists, some of whom regards her as a role model. Bolshevik Feminist, the first full-scale biography of this magnetic figure to appear in the United States, follows the life of Kollontai from her birth in St. Petersburg in 1872 to her death in Moscow eighty years later.

Description: Although the Soviet Union's centrally planned economic system played a significant role in world economic growth and modernization, it ultimately failed to compete with market forms of economic organization. Despite unavailing efforts at reform, it has now been abandoned, as the republics of the former USSR move painfully toward the market. In The Failure of Soviet Economic Planning: System, Performance, Reform Robert W. Campbell, one of the most respected U.S. specialists on the economy of the former Soviet Union, probes the evolution, behavior, and fatal weaknesses of the Soviet administrative-command economy.

Description: With this volume, Prusek's enlightening essays on modern Chinese writings are available for the first time in book form. Prusek traces two traditions in Chinese literature—the lyrical/subjective strain of the literati and the epic/objective tradition of folk literature—and, through their interaction, demonstrates important relationships between traditional and modern Chinese literature. He further explores "correspondences" to both realistic and lyrical trends in European literature. Included in this collection are "Subjectivism and Individualism in Modern Chinese Literature,'' "Introduction to Studies in Modern Chinese Literature," "A Confrontation of Traditional Oriental Literature with Modern European Literature in the Context of the Chinese Literary Revolution," "Reality and Art in Chinese Literature," "Lu Hsün's 'Huai chiu': A Pre- cursor of Modern Chinese Literature," "The Changing Role of the Narrator in Chinese Novels at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century." "Mao Tun and Yü Ta-fu," and 'Yeh Shen-t'ao and Anton Chekov." A fascinating exchange of views between Pn'isek and another eminent scholar, C. T. Hsia, is presented in a final essay and in an appendix. Their differing methodologies, approaches, and standards of literary judgment provide the student of modern Chinese literature with some rewarding insights about the analysis of literary texts.

Description: E. Power Biggs was one of the most influential figures in the American musical world during the middle decades of the twentieth century. As a popular radio performer in the 1940s and 1950s, a renowned recitalist, and a prolific recording artist, he stood for the best in organ music and the best in instruments. Biggs played everything from Buxtehude, Bach, and Handel to Hindemith, Scott Joplin, and Ives; and he experimented with such diverse media as the pedal harpsichord and the latest in quadraphonic sound recording. He encouraged American composers to write new works for the organ, which he performed regularly on the radio and at his recitals in the United States as well as abroad. Biggs eschewed electronic instruments and did everything he could to encourage churches and concert halls to acquire instruments by the best builders. He was one of the pioneers in the return to smaller, tracker-action organs for the performance of the Baroque and Classical literature. In his search for authenticity, he recorded the music of Frescobaldi, Soler, Sweelinck, and Bach, among others, on the instruments they had actually played. Although E. Power Biggs was born in England, he dedicated himself to his adopted country. He attracted a devoted following, achieved great fame, and revolutionized the organ world.

Description: After its eclipse by the piano, the harpsichord survived primarily as a museum curiosity until the end of the nineteenth century. But early in the new century the player and builder Arnold Dolmetsch found a ready market for his harpsichords, clavichords, and virginals and an eager audience for his chamber concerts featuring these new/old instruments. In 1923 the incomparable Wanda Landowska made her American debut. This tiny woman, almost a cult figure, was to exert a powerful influence on the course of harpsichord playing for the next half century. Among her students were Putnam Aldrich, the harpsichord duo of Philip Manuel and Gavin Williamson, Alice Ehlers, and, for a short time, Ralph Kirkpatrick. Landowska's instrument was the heavy, durable Pleyel. As the harpsichord and authentic instrument revival progressed, American builders started to produce lighter instruments, and in recent years do-it-yourself builders have been buying harpsichord kits. Sylvia Marlowe is famous for playing jazz on the harpsichord, and in a reversal of past practice, harpsichordists are now borrowing the music of the piano and making it their own. The harpsichord has come a long way from the days when reviewers patronizingly described it as "quaint," "tinkling," or sounding like "a regiment of mice." It can be powerful and tender, dramatic and delicate, and in the minds of many, the only medium for the performance of early music.

Description: According to Stalin, Soviet music was to be "an art national in form and socialist in content." The degree to wich this dictum has been followed in modern Russian music is scrupulously recorded in the enlarged edition of Music and Musical Life in Soviet Russia. It contains Boris Schwarz' frank comentary on Soviet music, composers, concerts, competitions, and musical conditions in the Soviet Union. But the book as a whole is more than a musical history. It encompasses the growth of Soviet cultural life—not only composition and performane, but also ballet and opera, educational institutions and curricula, books and journals on music, and musical "politics."

Description: This volume analyzes academic exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as some of the states of Eastern Europe, from 1958 through 1975 in the framework of Soviet-American cultural relations and of the larger Soviet-American relationship. Academic exchanges with the Soviet Union, which began formally in 1958 and which continue under many of the principles then established, have increased our understanding of the Soviet Union and have created new relationships between our universities and our government. They have often provided the closest and most significant form of personal contact between American and Soviet citizens. They have also played an important political role, although they are called the "neglected aspect" of our foreign policy. They reveal the basic philosophies and policies that separate the two systems and the adversary character of Soviet-American relations.

Description: Translated from original writings by Lander MacClintock in 1957, Orpheus in America: Offenbach's Diary of His Journey to the New World offers unique perspective and insight into the thoughts of notable German-French composer, Jacques Offenbach during his 1876 visit to the United States. The book is was originally self-described on its cover flap as follows: "The name of Offenbach, king of opéra bouffe, author of La Vie Parisienne and The Tales of Hoffman is synonymous with the gaiety and wit of the French Second Empire. Visiting America in 1876, Offenbach … was endlessly inquisitive about all he saw, from art and music to the New York Fire Department, from horse-cars to women's dress, from Niagara Falls to advertising. Offenbach found America and the Americans a source of unfailing entertainment, and the candid impressions which he recorded in his journal are fresh, droll, and full of charm."

Description: With the death of Leonid Brezhnev in November 1982, the Soviet Union faces a critical period. What policies are its new leaders likely to follow? What are the principal strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet Union and how might they afect the uture conduct of Soviet leaders at home and abroad? A distinguished group of American specialists studies the Soviet system and Soviet society within a context of international politics, attempting to identify and explain the factors that are most likely to influence Soviet policy in the 1980s. The authors have drawn on the talents of thirty-five experts in seven disciplines to produce this essential volume. Policy makers, students, specialists, and the public will find here a coherent framework for understanding the future conduct of the Soviet Union.

Description: The cement industry provides an especially suitable framework within which to analyze the spatial efficiency of Soviet planning because of its size and rate of growth, which are among the highest in the economy; its relatively simple cost structure and limited scale economies; the widespread distribution of its raw materials, resulting in narrow and predictable regional production cost variation; and the homogeneity of use of its output, as an input into construction, which makes its demand easier to anticipate than is the demand for many other industrial materials, simplifying the problem of location and facilitating retrospective analysis.

Description: Puškin Today highlights the remarkable variety and compass of a figure who by all accounts is absolutely central to Russian culture, even "Russianness" itself. A multifaceted writer whose experiments at the boundaries of genre have never been equaled, Alexander Puškin is, moreover, an ever-evolving cultural myth; his works have served as a safe haven in troubled times for the Russian intelligentsia for nearly two centuries.

Description: Alexander Pushkin's dazzling poetic masterpiece, Eugene Onegin (1823–1831), occupies a unique place in the history of Russian culture, regarded as the national epic as well as the cornerstone of the nineteenth-century Russian novel. Onegin is so central to Russian culture that generations of Russians have been on intimate terms with its characters, its form, and its flavor, and, from the time of its publication until the present, every important critical movement or literary theory has addressed it. Yet, because the poem's literary qualities are exceptionally difficult to convey in translation, Onegin is little known among non-Russians. This anthology, presenting in English the most influential nineteenth- and twentieth-century criticism devoted to Onegin, offers English-speaking readers an appreciation of the poem's hold on the Russian imagination while illuminating the history of Russian criticism itself.

Description: The symbols used in the notation of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music are tantalizingly similar to those of modern notation, but their meanings can be very different. The right musical pronunciation is avidly sought by today's scholars and performers and by an increasingly demanding modern audience. Transcribing earlier notation into our modern system, in which time signatures and bar lines indicate regular accents and dynamic stress, distorts music that may have been conceived quite differently. Using theoretical treatises and instruction manuals of the period, George Houle provides a practical guide to the performance of Baroque and early Classic-period music, including discussions of notes inegales, keyboard fingerings, woodwind tonguings, and string bowings. Creating a persuasive beat, he advises, requires a paradoxical mixture of precision and flexibility that avoids both mechanical regularity and unpredictable caprice. These principles are demonstrated on an unusual cassette tape, available separately. Realized by means of a computer program, it reconstructs fifteen examples of music from the late eighteenth century, reproducing not only the melodies but the metrical articulations of these pieces. When performed according to the conventions of its own time, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music has a wonderful lilt and grace and a compelling vitality.

Description: Pushkin: Death of a Poet is a careful appraisal of the available facts, casting doubt on many sidely circulated theories concerning Pushkin's death. Sifting the evidence from contemporary letters, diaries, and other sources, the author examines Pushkin's motives: his intense envy of his wife's popularity; his own social discomfort and failure; his humiliating obligation to the Tsar; his growing artistic sterility. He recreates the personalities of the central figures in the story and explores the tangled web of events which preceded the duel and the desperate last-minute efforts by friends of both Pushkin and d'Anthés to prevent their meeting. A vivid account of the duel itself and its tragic aftermath concludes this engrossing study of a perplexing chapter in literary history.

Description: Haydn expert A. Peter Brown offers the first detailed and comprehensive study of the composer's keyboard works, encompassing the solo sonatas, keyboard trios, accompanied divertimentos , concertinas and Klavierstücke. Brown first establishes that Haydn was an effective performer on the keyboard instruments of his day. Then, drawing on the latest findings, he devotes two essays to questions of authenticity and dating of keyboard works attributed to Haydn, and another to the central issue for eighteenth- century keyboard music: which instrument is most appropriate for a given work? In investigating the possible influences on Haydn of the Viennese tradition and of C. P. E. Bach, the author concludes that Haydn learned from both but put his own stamp on everything to which he was exposed. In the last three essays, Brown traces the development of Haydn's musical language, describing the relationship of certain genres in the composer's oeuvre and providing a chronological examination of the structure and style of the works in each category. Haydn's contributions to the symphony and the string quartet have long been acknowledged. This meticulously documented study now celebrates Haydn's accomplishments in the realm of keyboard music.

Description: Mao Tun was indisputably one of the best novelists of twentieth-century China. Perhaps because his struggle to establish himself took place during the most volatile years of the Revolution, his best work has an elemental force that is rare in Chinese fiction, politically committed or otherwise. Yu-shih Chen has provided the first full-length scholarly interpretation of Mao Tun's greatest work. Her approach is broad, taking into consideration social, political, and biographical influences. She gives us detailed and brilliantly original analyses of Disillusionment, Vacillation, and Pursuit, the three novels which together form the great trilogy published under the title Eclipse. The picture that emerges in the analysis of this and subsequent work is of a great writer struggling to reconcile the conflict between idealism and realism, between the dream of the revolutionaries and the far from ideal results. Mao Tun ultimately stood with the Revolution in China. He was a committed revolutionary but he was also—perhaps first of all—a great writer. This indispensable book introduces his major work to English-speaking readers.

Description: This account of the stormy career of a controversial figure in United States diplomacy draws upon all available sources, including the previously inaccessible Bullitt papers at Yale University. It focuses principally on Bullitt's contribution to Russian-American policy during the WIlson administration and as adviser on Soviet affairs to Franklin Roosevelt. These revealing chapters in recent diplomatic history show how Bullitt's contact with the harsh facts of international politics gradually extinguished his enthusiastic hope for a new world to follow World War I.

Description: Focusing on the thought and activities of A. A. Vogdanov, A. V. Lunacharsky, Maxim Gorky, and V. D. Bonch-Bruevich, this political and intellectual history of Bolshevism before 1914 shows that Lenin by no means dominated or controlled his own fraction of the Russian Social Democratic Worker's Party, as his famous essay What Is to Be Done? (1902) implies. Rather, Lenin and his rival, Alexander Bogdanov, struggled to persuade divided and fissiparous revolutionary exiles to accept their respective ideals of rigid party authority and Marxist orthodoxy, on the one hand, or collectivist and syndicalist manipulation of the masses, on the other.
