    Beschreibung: This book discusses and analyses global policies and practices aimed at promoting equity in higher education participation and attainment. Although the massification of higher education systems has facilitated the participation of students from deprived backgrounds, socioeconomic inequalities persist in access to the most prestigious institutions and programmes. Privileged students benefit from a number of advantages in the competition for selective and scarce places: access to information, lower aversion to debt, higher expectations, better previous schooling and higher academic achievement. The chapters present a critical analysis of equity policies in different countries – with or without affirmative action policies, within a context of neoliberal policies or within a social democratic model – and the reasons why they have failed to promote equity and fairness, preventing students from achieving their full educational potential. This is an open access book.

Aus der externen Perspektive werden die vielschichtigen Anforderungen der relevanten Stakeholder wie Investoren, Aktionärsschützer, Stimmrechtsberater und Journalisten an die Kommunikation aufgezeigt. Aus der internen Perspektive von Aufsichtsratsvorsitzenden, Investor-Relations- und Public-Relations-Verantwortlichen werden die internen und externen Kommunikationsmaßnahmen von Aufsichtsratsvorsitzenden identifiziert. Auf dieser Basis wird die Notwendigkeit begründet, warum und wie die Kommunikation zu einem festen Bestandteil des Kommunikationsmanagements von Unternehmen werden sollte.     Beschreibung: This open access book includes a series of relevant policy research articles, elaborared in the framework of the “Quality in higher education: internationalisation and databases to enhance the Romanian education system” project, implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI), together with the Ministry of Education. The project aims to develop and implement systemic measures at tertiary education level, leading to an increased quality of the overall higher education system and universities better prepared for labour market requirements and international standards. The book focuses on areas of interest for Romanian higher education, such as systemic measures to improve access, participation and completion for (vulnerable) students, better promotion of the Romanian higher education to attract students, as well as instruments for a more efficient use of data at higher education level. Each article includes evidence-based policy proposals that could support new strategic initiatives in higher education, including new legislation. Additionally, the collection of articles tells a comprehensive story about the audacity of a higher education system which went through significant challenges to align itself with both European and international trends, as well as respond to national imperatives. Over the last three decades, since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Romanian higher education has undergone significant transformations, aiming to align itself to the latest developments and trends at European and international level. The National Law on Education no. 1/2011 has set the stage for a full implementation of the Bologna Process action lines, taking into account that Romania was already a part of the largest European intergovernmental process – currently the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) – as a founding member. However, since the adoption of this normative framework, the law suffered numerous amendments, making it challenging to observe and achieve coherence in its implementation. Furthermore, Romania is also currently redesigning the strategy for the alocation of European structural funds 2021-2027, based on two strategic documents - the new Education and Employment Operational Programme and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan which highlight the reform and investment priorities at a national level. At the same time, 2021 is a good time to analyze the level of implementation for the objectives and measures included in the National Strategy for Tertiary Education 2015-2020, the Europe 2020 Strategy, and the Bologna Process action lines in the 2010 – 2020 timeframe. Therefore, the present moment may be an important time to assess the impact of strategic documents and actions in the last decade and, possibly, to draft a new National Education Law, better adapted to current realities, starting from the recent initiative by the President of Romania – the Educated Romania strategic vision which was also politically assumed by the Romanian Government.

    Beschreibung: This chapter discusses the representation of West and Central African cities in Francophone African narratives of diasporic return. Using as case studies Camara Laye’s Dramouss (A Dream of Africa; 1966), Aïssatou Cissokho’s Dakar, la touriste autochtone (“Dakar, the Native Tourist”; 1986), and Daniel Biyaoula’s L’Impasse (“The Impasse”; 1996), the chapter focuses on the texts’ portrayals of urban mobility practices and transport to explore the role of mobility in the construction of the postcolonial African city as experienced by the diasporic returnee, typical a displaced postcolonial mobile subject. In the discussed novels, various modes of mobility move the protagonists around in their former hometowns, permitting encounters with city dwellers and formerly familial urban landscapes. The texts’ portrayals of the returnees’ urban mobilities highlight the tensions between memory and the present and underline the protagonists’ sense of unbelonging and disillusionment. By focusing on African cities from the perspective of urban mobilities, the chapter contributes to the on-going postcolonialization of literary urban studies and enhances the field’s dialogue with mobilities research.

    Beschreibung: In the continuous search for sustainability, the exchange of diverse perspectives, assumptions, and values is indispensable to environmental protection. Through anthropological and ethnographic analyses, this collection addresses how interests, values, and ideologies affect dialogue and sustainability work. Drawing on studies from three continents – Europe, North America, and South America – the paradoxes and the plurality of meanings associated with the creation of sustainable futures are explored. The book focuses on how communication practices collide with organizational frameworks, customary practices, livelihoods, and landscape. In so doing, the authors explore the meanings of environmental communication, pushing beyond environmental advocacy rhetoric to emphasize stronger anthropological engagement within communities to achieve more impactful environmental communication practice.     Beschreibung: In diesem Open.Access-Buch wird gezeigt, dass eine verminderte Fähigkeit zur Simultanerfassung eine Ursache von Rechenschwäche sein kann. Mathematische Lernschwierigkeiten offenbaren sich häufig schon im frühen Grundschulunterricht. Die gängigen Lernmaterialien im mathematischen Anfangsunterricht verwenden zur Mengendarstellung die Kraft der Fünf, die für betroffene Schüler*innen eine besondere Hürde darstellt. In einem Educational Design Research-Projekt wurde gemeinsam mit Personen mit Trisomie 21, dem Down-Syndrom, das mathildr-System entwickelt. Das System eignet sich in der Binnendifferenzierung als Alternative zur Kraft der Fünf und kann zur Entwicklung einer Mengenvorstellung und zum Erlernen des Kopfrechnens verwendet werden. In einer formativen Evaluation wurden die Lernfortschritte von 30 Schüler*innen mit Trisomie 21 im Alter von vier bis 17 Jahren im Zusammenhang mit dem mathildr-System dokumentiert. Ein abschließendes Quasi-Experiment mit 36 Schüler*innen mit Trisomie 21 zeigt zudem, dass sich mathildr zur quasi-simultanen Mengenerfassung eignet. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes wurden Lernmaterialien entwickelt, die Einzug an Schulen gehalten haben.

    Beschreibung: In this chapter we consider why education systems have not yet achieved equitable access and learning for all girls, despite high-level government commitment. Taking Ethiopia as a case study, we refer to the ‘domains of power’ framework (Hickey & Hossain, 2019) to explore the influence of politics on progress in girls’ education, focusing on the interaction between the political settlement and the education policy domain. The analysis draws on data from the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) Ethiopia programme, including analysis of government documents, actor mapping and interviews with 150 key government stakeholders across seven regions and city administrations in Ethiopia. Adopting a gender lens, we take account of the influence and interaction of informal institutions within the education domain. We find that the education system cannot be considered to be a gender-neutral site given that women continue to be absent from positions of power. In addition, stakeholders’ ideas about the nature of gender roles influence their attitudes, behaviour and actions, holding back progress towards the high-level commitments.

    Beschreibung: This chapter deals with the sensorimotor predominance in connection with hindrances to the learning of reading and writing in a group of 120 left-handed pupils, aged 9 to 20, educated in ten schools located in the western and southern departments of Haiti. Manual, visual and auditory preference is studied in relation to linguistic performance in left-handed students, sometimes ignored but often forced to favor the side which hemispherical development has not made naturally dominant. Poor performance was certainly observed, but it is not directly linked to these students’ left-handedness. It is preponderantly the consequence of asymmetries contrary to the cerebral hemisphere, of a somewhat underhand attempt at 'dyslateralization', due to the failure of an educational system characterized by shortcomings and prejudices built around the phenomenon of laterality and problems emanating from unsuitable educational and linguistic practices. This creates constraints that prevent these students from thriving. Because the teaching strategies, methods and the school environment are designed and adapted to benefit right-handed students, left-handed people have a disability.

    Beschreibung: The International Classroom Lexicon Project set out to document the professional vocabulary of middle-school mathematics teachers in ten communities from around the world. The construction of a national lexicon, which can be thought of as the characterisation of a very specific aspect of the culture of each participating country, was undertaken by research teams involving experienced teachers as genuine co-researchers. Each cultural artefact identified the words by which teachers name the classroom phenomena in their respective environment.     Beschreibung: This book radically refigures the conceptual and formal significance of childhood in nineteenth-century English poetry. By theorizing infancy as a poetics as well as a space of continual beginning, Ruderman shows how it allowed poets access to inchoate, uncanny, and mutable forms of subjectivity and art. While recent historicist studies have documented the "freshness of experience" childhood confers on 19th-century poetry and culture, this book draws on new formalist and psychoanalytic perspectives to rethink familiar concepts such as immortality, the sublime, and the death drive as well as forms and genres such as the pastoral, the ode, and the ballad. Ruderman establishes that infancy emerges as a unique structure of feeling simultaneously with new theories of lyric poetry at the end of the eighteenth century. He then explores the intertwining of poetic experimentation and infancy in Wordsworth, Anna Barbauld, Blake, Coleridge, Erasmus Darwin, Sara Coleridge, Shelley, Matthew Arnold, Tennyson, and Augusta Webster. Each chapter addresses andanalyzes a specific moment in a writers’ work, moments of tenderness or mourning, birth or death, physical or mental illness, when infancy is analogized, eulogized, or theorized. Moving between canonical and archival materials, and combining textual and inter-textual reading, metrical and prosodic analysis, and post-Freudian psychoanalytic theory, the book shows how poetic engagements with infancy anticipate psychoanalytic and phenomenological (i.e. modern) ways of being in the world. Ultimately, Rudermansuggests that it is not so much that we return to infancy as that infancy returns (obsessively, compulsively) in us. This book shows how by tracking changing attitudes towards the idea of infancy, one might also map the emotional, political, and aesthetic terrain of nineteenth-century culture. It will be of interest to scholars in the areas of British romanticism and Victorianism, as well as 19th-century American literature and culture, histories of childhood, and representations of the child from art historical, cultural studies, and literary perspectives. Industry 4.0 will also change the type, nature, and scope of public goods and how they are produced, financed, delivered, and consumed. This book redefines the current paradigm of public goods. It proposes a model of production and distribution of public goods that acknowledges the participation of entities from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The authors argue that these entities would participate in the production, financing, distribution, and consumption of such goods. From a theoretical point of view, such an inclusive approach involving the expansion of the classical state - market dichotomy with new entities, including citizens themselves, leads to a new conceptualization and approach towards public goods. The model assumes shared responsibility, subsidiarity, and paternalistic libertarianism, and it allows the state to create new entities of an educational or fiscal nature, while remaining the regulator of public services and distribution. Additionally, the book analyzes changes regarding the perception of public goods, in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, across selected sectors such as healthcare and pension systems, education, local public goods, and public utility services. The book is primarily addressed to researchers, scholars and students across social and technical sciences, and it will also be a useful guide for central and local administration bodies responsible for public policy.

    Beschreibung: This volume is a study of eight major novels from the postwar period (1945-65) in conjunction with the films made from them during a later period of a little less than three decades straddling the millennium (1985-2012). The comparison of these novels (by Ken Kesey, Paul Bowles, Carson McCullers, Jack Kerouac, James Baldwin, Alexander Trocchi, William Burroughs, and Peter Matthiessen) with their film adaptations offers the opportunity for a historical reassessment not only of the novels themselves but also of the global counterculture of the years 1965-75, which they prefigure in a variety of ways. Appearing more than a decade after the waning of the counterculture and in some cases as much as fifty years after the novels on which they are based, the films display significant revisions and omissions prompted by the historical and cultural changes of the intervening years. Whereas these changes are nowadays often interpreted in purely political terms, this book argues that the religious theme of mystery and its decline is central to the novels and films and is a key feature of the period of cultural transformation that they bookend. At once a work of literary criticism, film studies, and cultural history, this text has the potential to reach both an academic audience and the broader readership that has long existed for these novels as well as the even broader one interested in reappraising the period of the global counterculture—among the most important of the influences that have shaped the contemporary world.

    Beschreibung: Digital technologies shape our embodied lives and affect our knowledge of the self and the world. The introductory chapter of the book presents the state of the art in the research on digitalisation of health and social care work, with a focus on care for older people. In ageing societies, understanding what it takes to introduce and use digital technologies can pave the way to a successful, sustainable, and equally accessible system of social care and healthcare provision for older people. The chapter discusses some of the limitations in the present discussion and how the book at hand aims to address these gaps. The chapter proposes that living in an increasingly digitalised world requires digital agency, that is the individual’s ability to control and adapt to their surroundings, and to critically address technological determinism in the everyday life. The chapter ends with an overview of the book’s subsequent chapters that demonstrate different aspects to service users’ and care workers’ digital agency based on recent studies of digital technologies in care for older people.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides insights from Indigenous higher degree research (HDR) students on supervision practices in an Australian context. It examines findings from qualitative studies conducted with Indigenous HDR students from different academic disciplines, enrolled higher education institutions across Australia, and supervisors of Indigenous HDR students. Ausgehend davon wird die Frage der Gleichwertigkeit allgemein- und berufsbildender Gesundheitsausbildungen in den Fokus gerückt und die daraus resultierenden Herausforderungen für die Rekrutierung des Fachkräftenachwuchses in verschiedenen Gesundheitsberufen diskutiert. Konzeptionell schlägt die Studie eine neue Perspektive auf die institutionelle Segregation von Allgemein- und Berufsbildung vor.     Beschreibung: Technical and vocational education have assumed a significant role in the plans of developed nations to overcome economic crisis, relocating learning into the workplace and extending it to higher levels. Policy discourses are based on the premise that education polarised between universities and low attainment has poorly served the needs of modern economies and young people. This chapter sets out the principal claims of these approaches to improve youth transitions and contribute to social justice. These claims are traced back to their origins in the shift to service-based economies and collapse of youth labour markets, leading to a crisis in vocational education and fuelling demand for higher education credentials; and to the emergence of international policies aiming to reconstitute youth transitions on neoliberal lines. Addressing these questions from a social justice perspective, we ask whether such disruption of the educational divide between general and vocational routes has eroded its role in reproducing and validating the social structures of the post-war period, with the creation of new routes and the postulation of new elites validating the emergence of existing and new forms of educational and social inequity.

It exposes problems that relate to the way that universities have become over-managed business enterprises which may not reflect societal, national, or global educational needs. From there, it proposes some solutions, including three innovative programs, that make universities more responsive to needs, as well as reduce their impact on the environment. The central idea of this book is developing the ‘Distributed University,’ which distributes education to where it is needed, reducing local and global inequalities in access, and emphasizing local relevance in place of large centralized campuses, with a low impact on the environment. It emphasizes the distribution of trust in place of managerialism and collaboration in place of competition. By focusing on distributing education online, this book discusses how the higher education sector can be set up to adapt to the changes in the ways we work and learn today, and which will be required to adapt to and take advantage of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

    Beschreibung: Queer Rebels is a study of gay narrative writings published in Spain at the turn of the 20th century. The book scrutinises the ways in which the literary production of contemporary Spanish gay authors – José Luis de Juan, Luis G. Martín, Juan Gil-Albert, Juan Goytisolo, Eduardo Mendicutti, Luis Antonio de Villena and Álvaro Pombo – engages with homophobic and homophile discourses, as well as with the vernacular and international literary legacy. The first part revolves around the metaphor of a rebellious scribe who queers literary tradition by clandestinely weaving changes into copies of the books he makes. This subversive writing act, named ‘Mazuf’s gesture’ after the protagonist of José Luis de Juan’s This Breathing World (1999), is examined in four highly intertextual works by other writers. The second part of the book explores Luis Antonio de Villena and Álvaro Pombo, who in their different ways seek to coin their own definitions of homosexual experience in opposition both to the homophobic discourses of the past and to the homonormative regimes of the commercialised and trivialised gay culture of today. In their novels, ‘Mazuf’s gesture’ involves playing a sophisticated queer game with readers and their expectations.

    Beschreibung: The fourth industrial revolution, characterized by digitization, artificial intelligence and augmented reality, and megatrends such as globalization, urbanization, demographic changes and the knowledge-based economy, will trigger a series of profound technological, economic, social and environmental changes that will permanently and irreversibly change the role of the state in meeting social needs. Industry 4.0 will also change the type, nature, and scope of public goods and how they are produced, financed, delivered, and consumed. This book redefines the current paradigm of public goods. It proposes a model of production and distribution of public goods that acknowledges the participation of entities from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The authors argue that these entities would participate in the production, financing, distribution, and consumption of such goods. From a theoretical point of view, such an inclusive approach involving the expansion of the classical state - market dichotomy with new entities, including citizens themselves, leads to a new conceptualization and approach towards public goods. The model assumes shared responsibility, subsidiarity, and paternalistic libertarianism, and it allows the state to create new entities of an educational or fiscal nature, while remaining the regulator of public services and distribution. Additionally, the book analyzes changes regarding the perception of public goods, in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, across selected sectors such as healthcare and pension systems, education, local public goods, and public utility services. The book is primarily addressed to researchers, scholars and students across social and technical sciences, and it will also be a useful guide for central and local administration bodies responsible for public policy.

    Beschreibung: This open access book provides new conceptualisations on the networks of migrants and their descendants in accessing the labour market. Although references to social networks are common in discussions of migration, simplified ideas of co-ethnic networks often obscure the reality, for example confounding ties with co-ethnics and ‘strong ties’. This open access book addresses key questions about the role of networks in migration contexts, particularly in relation to how migrants and their descendants, access the labour market and develop their employment trajectories over time. Rather than adopting a narrow essentializing ethnic lens, the research presented in this book explores intersectional identities of class, generation and gender. By focusing on the kinds of capital circulating between ties, including the dark side of social capital, the book offers insights into power dynamics and the potentially exclusionary dimension of networks. Taking a long term view, across generations, the research in this book shows how migrants and their descendants mobilize resources to tackle discrimination and enhance their position within particular labour markets. Drawing on robust quantitative and rich qualitative data, this book provides a primary source to students, scholars and policy-makers focusing on issues of migration, social networks, social mobility as well as labour market inequalities.

    Beschreibung: ‘Challenger banks’ are banks or non-banking start-ups, the operations of which are based on digital technologies and which challenge big, traditional banks. It is a new approach to provide financial services, where an agile organization and new technologies are the key success factors. The aim of the study is to explore the operations of challenger banks and their new digital approaches to provide banking and investment services to retail customers as an innovation in the financial market. The case of Revolut is used as a unit of analysis. The study makes an attempt to identify and explore: (i) What product innovations have been implemented by Revolut in regard to the customers’ access to financial markets? (ii) How does Revolut compete with other challenger banks and traditional financial institutions? (iii) What are socio-economic consequences of innovations introduced by challenger banks? (iv) What is the legal formula of Revolut's operations? From the perspective of management theory, the study identifies the mechanisms of developing and implementing innovations in the financial sector, in the context of digital transformation and the changes in legal regulations.

    Beschreibung: This open access book demonstrates how data quality issues affect all surveys and proposes methods that can be utilised to deal with the observable components of survey error in a statistically sound manner. This book begins by profiling the post-Apartheid period in South Africa's history when the sampling frame and survey methodology for household surveys was undergoing periodic changes due to the changing geopolitical landscape in the country. This book profiles how different components of error had disproportionate magnitudes in different survey years, including coverage error, sampling error, nonresponse error, measurement error, processing error and adjustment error. The parameters of interest concern the earnings distribution, but despite this outcome of interest, the discussion is generalizable to any question in a random sample survey of households or firms. This book then investigates questionnaire design and item nonresponse by building a response propensity model for the employee income question in two South African labour market surveys: the October Household Survey (OHS, 1997-1999) and the Labour Force Survey (LFS, 2000-2003). This time period isolates a period of changing questionnaire design for the income question. Finally, this book is concerned with how to employee income data with a mixture of continuous data, bounded response data and nonresponse. A variable with this mixture of data types is called coarse data. Because the income question consists of two parts -- an initial, exact income question and a bounded income follow-up question -- the resulting statistical distribution of employee income is both continuous and discrete. The book shows researchers how to appropriately deal with coarse income data using multiple imputation. The take-home message from this book is that researchers have a responsibility to treat data quality concerns in a statistically sound manner, rather than making adjustments to public-use data in arbitrary ways, often underpinned by undefensible assumptions about an implicit unobservable loss function in the data. The demonstration of how this can be done provides a replicable concept map with applicable methods that can be utilised in any sample survey.

In einer reichen Gesellschaft arm zu sein, bedeutet nicht nur ein materielles Problem, sondern auch die Infragestellung der sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Zugehörigkeit der Betroffenen. Um dem zu entgehen, sind die Akteure auf voneinander abgrenzbare Kontexte in ihrem Netzwerk angewiesen, in denen sie Anerkennung und Teilhabe generieren können. Wer in dieser Lage auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen ist, erfährt Armut als die Zerstörung seiner bzw. ihrer Identität als respektables Mitglied der Gesellschaft. Der Kampf gegen die Armut darf daher nicht gegen die Armen geführt werden, sondern muss ein Kampf um Orte und Gelegenheiten sein, an denen wir zeigen können, dass es (auch) auf uns ankommt. Es zeigt sich, dass materielle Knappheit in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Einbindung unterschiedlich wahrgenommen wird. Die Bewältigungschancen verschlechtern sich, je weniger Gelegenheitsstrukturen zur Erreichung von Anerkennung und Teilhabe den Befragten in ihrem sozial-räumlichen Umfeld zur Verfügung stehen.

    Beschreibung: This chapter aims at exploring some theoretical issues associated with the impact of technology companies on the market structure in the financial industry with the special focus on capital markets. Based on the industrial organization theory, as well as on an extensive literature review, research to date, and industry reports, the attempt was made to identify main structural changes resulting from FinTech's activity in this market segment. It was found that, in contrast to the banking sector, BigTechs are not interested in entering into capital markets. This can be explained by complexity of investment services and weak synergies between them and non-financial services offered by technology giants. As a result, digitalization in capital markets is driven rather from inside and supported by FinTechs. In the stock market, the development of high-frequency trading resulted in the increasing centralization of trade that neither facilitated market access nor eliminated the market asymmetry. Nonetheless, FinTech solutions allowed reductions in transaction costs and increase in short-term market efficiency. In the asset management and mutual funds industry digital platforms, developed mostly by incumbents, by lowering transaction costs and reducing communication frictions made investing easier and cheaper for individuals, however their decisions became more speculative.

Keane questions established understandings of the Irish poet’s long fascination with the occult: a fixation that repelled literary contemporaries T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden, but which enhanced Yeats’s vision of life and death. Through close reading of selected poems, the first section of Making the Void Fruitful assesses Yeats’s spiritualised treatment of corporeal themes, exploring sex and eroticism as the expression of a duality inherent to his ontological and supernatural convictions. The power-producing tension in Yeats’s work is not only intellectual but emotional. At its vital centre is his Muse: the beautiful political firebrand, Maud Gonne, whose activist Republican politics he considered his one real rival.     Beschreibung: This chapter examines conflicting claims about the potential of European VET to provide a model for technical and vocational systems across the world. Technocratic accounts by international policy bodies, especially the OECD and EU, have focused on the possibilities for VET to facilitate transitions to employment by providing early experiences of learning at work, drawing on the integration of VET into production systems, as in the German system, seen as a barrier to neoliberal convergence because maintaining key progressive features into service sectors. Conversely, universalist welfare states held to underpin VET in Scandinavia have meanwhile given way to dualised social policies which, echoing the welfare state literature, can be seen either as ‘layered’ parallel provision or the direct erosion of comprehensive policies. During the early post-war period VET systems incorporated progressive educational elements which have come under attack, as signs of emerging dualisation have undermined the more progressive features of VET in Europe. Challenges from higher levels of VET, particularly in its most employer-responsive forms, can be seen as signs of this emerging dualisation.

Aus literaturwissenschaftlicher, insbesondere narratologischer Forschung sowie mathematischen, philosophischen, physikalischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen zur Thematik des Raumes wird ein fuzzy-set-Modell herausgearbeitet, mit dem Raum in literarischen Texten analysiert und quantifiziert werden kann. Das Modell ist Grundlage eines Machine-Learning- Trainings, mit Hilfe dessen ein Tool trainiert wurde, das Ausdrücke, die in die Kategorien des theoriebasierten Modells fallen, automatisch erkennt und annotiert. In einem Kernkorpus aus 100 Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten (18-21) wurden mit Hilfe dieses Tools mehr als eine Million Annotationen in die Texte eingefügt und anschließend analysiert.

    Beschreibung: The International Classroom Lexicon Project set out to document the professional vocabulary of middle-school mathematics teachers in ten communities from around the world. The construction of a national lexicon, which can be thought of as the characterisation of a very specific aspect of the culture of each participating country, was undertaken by research teams involving experienced teachers as genuine co-researchers. Each cultural artefact identified the words by which teachers name the classroom phenomena in their respective environment. These are the terms that are used for seeing, describing, and communicating about the world that is the middle-school mathematics classroom.

    Beschreibung: This open access book presents detailed findings about the ethical, legal, and social acceptance of robots in the German and European context. The key resource is the Bremen AI Delphi survey of scientists and politicians and a related population survey. The focus is on trust in robotic assistance, human willingness to use this assistance, and the expected personal well-being in human-robot interaction. Using recent data from Eurostat, the European Social Survey, and the Eurobarometer survey, the analysis is extended to Germany and the EU. The acceptance of robots in care and everyday life is viewed against their acceptance in other contexts of life and the scientific research. The book reports on how the probability of five complex future scenarios is evaluated by experts and politicians. These scenarios cover a broad range of topics, including the worst-case scenario of cutthroat competition for jobs, the wealth promise of AI, communication in human-robot interaction, robotic assistance, and ethical and legal conflicts. International economic competition alone will ensure that countries invest sustainably in the future technologies of AI and robots. But will these technologies also be accepted by the population?     Beschreibung: In diesem Open-Access-Buch steht der akademische Group-Talk als Format der wissenschaftsinternen Wissenskommunikation im Fokus. Group-Talk ist die Feldbezeichnung für das wöchentliche Arbeitstreffen einer teilnehmend beobachteten Forschungsgruppe in der Computational Neuroscience (CNS). Dass (soziale) Wirklichkeit in Interaktionsprozessen erzeugt und institutionalisiert wird, ist eine aus der Wissenssoziologie bzw. dem Sozialkonstruktivismus bereits wohlbekannte Erkenntnis. Dass diese Erzeugung maßgeblich durch kommunikatives Handeln prozessiert wird, ist spätestens seit dem Kommunikativen Konstruktivismus bekannt. Zentral in vorliegender Analyse ist daher die spezifische Form des kommunikativen Handelns, das besondere Format, in dem die CNS, als relativ junger und interdisziplinärer Forschungskontext, von den disziplinär heterogenen Wissenschaftler/-innen im Feld, kommunikativ (re-)konstruiert wird. Die wissenssoziologische Gattungsanalyse dient dabei dazu, den reinen Situationalismus zu überschreiten und die soziologische Mikroanalyse (Handeln), vor dem Hintergrund einer fokussiert-ethnographischen Feldstudie, mit gesellschaftlichen Emergenzphänomenen auf Meso- und Makroebene zu verknüpfen. Erst diese systematische Verbindung des direkt beobachtbaren Wie der Kommunikation mit dem durch ethnographisches Wissen rekonstruierten Warum, überschreitet den Horizont reiner Beschreibung und führt in die Bereiche des soziologischen Verstehens und Erklärens.

    Beschreibung: William Sharp (1855-1905) conducted one of the most audacious literary deceptions of his or any time. A Scottish poet, novelist, biographer, and editor, he began in 1893 to write critically and commercially successful books under the name Fiona Macleod who became far more than a pseudonym. Enlisting his sister to provide the Macleod handwriting, he used the voluminous Fiona correspondence to fashion a distinctive personality for a talented, but remote and publicity-shy woman. Sometimes she was his cousin and other times his lover, and whenever suspicions arose, he vehemently denied he was Fiona. For more than a decade he duped not only the general public but such literary luminaries as George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, William Butler Yeats, and E. C. Stedman. Drawing extensively on his letters, his wife Elizabeth Sharp’s Memoir, and accounts by friends and associates, this biography provides a lucid and intimate account of William Sharp’s life, from his rejection of the dour religion of his Scottish boyhood, his turn to spiritualism, to his role in the Scottish Celtic Revival in the mid-nineties. The biography illuminates his wide network of close male and female friendships, through which he developed advanced ideas about the place of women in society, the constraints of marriage, the fluidity of gender identity, and the complexity of the human psyche. Uniquely this biography reveals the autobiographical content of the writings of Fiona Macleod, the remarkable extent to which Sharp used the feminine pseudonym to disguise his telling and retelling the complex story of his extramarital love affair with a beautiful and brilliant woman. The biography illuminates not only the talented and conflicted William Sharp, but also the cultural landscape of Great Britain in the late-nineteenth century. From late Pre-Raphaelitism through the ""yellow nineties” and on to the excesses of the early twentieth century, Sharp dabbled in all the movements that comprised what some have called the Age of Decadence.

It provides the reader with a unique and clear overview of the scope and core content of the articles, together with an analysis of the latest jurisprudence of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.     Beschreibung: This chapter, being halfway between abstract economic theory and policy analysis, addresses one of the most contested issues in comparative economic studies, namely the role of human deliberation versus spontaneity at the macroeconomic level. To arrive at new insights. It adopts a cross-regional perspective and speculates, if the counter-intuitive practices of China, based on pragmatism and experimentation, trial and error, has indeed been superior to social engineering, as practiced in various forms across Europe. It also highlights the limitations to theoretical generalizations, i.e., making claims that remain valid at any time and any place, as mainstream economics suggests of its own insights.

    Beschreibung: This open access book presents an actor-centered study on Europeanization, based on the assumption that EU-driven reforms are highly dependent on the behavior and interests of the key domestic actors. Whether or not a state pursues a European and democratic agenda depends on domestic lawmakers. Further, political elites are pre-eminent in deciding on the nature, form and content of any law, and on the extent to which the rule of law is actually enforced. Elites can overcome structural or institutional barriers that stand in the way of achieving their goals. The empirical study on Romania presented here lends this observation a more profound meaning: it shows how, in contexts where high level corruption is the norm rather than the exception, self-serving political elites cannot be expected to genuinely commit to adopting sound anti-corruption reform. The book is an inquiry into the motivations that drive legislators to make particular decisions, but also into the structural characteristics and dynamics of the elite that invite a selfish rather than responsible and responsive behaviour. Angestoßen durch die Geschehnisse und Diskussionen in den USA beschäftigt Rassismus als mit der Polizei assoziiertes Problem auch hierzulande die öffentliche Debatte äußerst intensiv. Dabei wird offenbar, dass die Organisation Polizei in der diversen Gesellschaft vor besonderen Problemen und Herausforderungen steht, denen sie bislang nur in Ansätzen begegnet und wenig gewachsen zu sein scheint. Zugleich fehlt es im deutschen Kontext bisher an einem hinreichend breiten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisstand zu Rassismus in der Polizei. Vor diesem Hintergrund bietet der Band eine Grundlage für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema, indem er den Forschungsstand aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammenführt und systematisch aufarbeitet. Die Beiträge können als Ausgangspunkt für weitere Forschung dienen, sollen aber auch eine Übersetzung der Befunde der Rassismusforschung in Richtung Polizei leisten.

But how are ideas of evil constructed in current times and framed by contemporary social discourses? Modern Folk Devils builds on and works with Stanley Cohen’s theory on folk devils and moral panics to discuss the constructions of evil. The authors present an array of case-studies that illustrate how the notion of folk devils nowadays comes into play and animates ideas of otherness and evil throughout the world. Building on these insights, seven key democratic competencies are identified and linked to concrete educational practices that foster them, leading to an agenda for higher education reform. Ultimately arguing for making the teaching of civic virtue a more central part of university education in Europe, this book will appeal to researchers, educators, and politicians with an interest in education policy, philosophy of education, and democratic theory, as well as concerned citizens.

    Beschreibung: In this rigorous and necessary book, Kristien Hens brings together bioethics and the philosophy of biology to argue that it is ethically necessary for scientific research to include a place for the philosopher. As well as ethical, their role is conceptual: they can improve the quality and coherence of scientific research by ensuring that particular concepts are used consistently and thoughtfully across interdisciplinary projects.     Beschreibung: This book is about the ways in which experiments can be employed in the context of research on learning technologies and child–computer interaction (CCI). It is directed at researchers, supporting them to employ experimental studies while increasing their quality and rigor. The book provides a complete and comprehensive description on how to design, implement, and report experiments, with a focus on and examples from CCI and learning technology research. The topics covered include an introduction to CCI and learning technologies as interdisciplinary fields of research, how to design educational interfaces and visualizations that support experimental studies, the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of experiments, methodological decisions in designing and conducting experiments (e.g. devising hypotheses and selecting measures), and the reporting of results. As well, a brief introduction on how contemporary advances in data science, artificial intelligence, and sensor data have impacted learning technology and CCI research is presented. The book details three important issues that a learning technology and CCI researcher needs to be aware of: the importance of the context, ethical considerations, and working with children. The motivation behind and emphasis of this book is helping prospective CCI and learning technology researchers (a) to evaluate the circumstances that favor (or do not favor) the use of experiments, (b) to make the necessary methodological decisions about the type and features of the experiment, (c) to design the necessary “artifacts” (e.g., prototype systems, interfaces, materials, and procedures), (d) to operationalize and conduct experimental procedures to minimize potential bias, and (e) to report the results of their studies for successful dissemination in top-tier venues (such as journals and conferences). This book is an open access publication.

    Beschreibung: Datasets have come to play a significant role in the technical and political realities of our overdeveloped world. This chapter indicates how invisible data processes pose a threat to the health and safety of the global public and argues for the democratic potential of data practices. This potential is set to become even more influential due to the central role data plays for training contemporary AI and technologies such as machine learning. Our case study explores the role patient datasets have for machine learning research in healthcare and shows that publicly available datasets are central to advancing data analysis research; they can act as a counterbalance to datasets full of absences, biases, and disconnects that often corrupt the quality of data. Given this, we argue for the introduction of ‘data solidarity’ as a principle of data governance and an effective critical data practice that focuses on the democratic (instead of economic) potential of data; a potential that is far too often overlooked.

    Beschreibung: In diesem Open-Access-Buch untersucht Stefanie Lütters, inwieweit Sozialkapital die verzerrte Inanspruchnahme politischer Teilhaberechte erklärt. Denn entgegen der demokratischen Idealvorstellung von politischer Gleichheit ist die politische Beteiligung durch eine Selektivität gekennzeichnet, die sich systematisch entlang sozialer Statusvariablen ausformt. Unter Bezugnahme auf die strukturelle Komponente sozialen Kapitals stehen formelle und informelle Netzwerkkonstellationen im Fokus der Untersuchung, die im Rahmen kontrastierender Sozialräume analysiert werden. Dabei verbindet die Autorin sozialstrukturelle und rationale Handlungstheorien mit netzwerkorientierten und kontextuellen Erklärungsansätzen. Die empirischen Ergebnisse bestätigen den Wert sozialer Netzwerkelemente für die politische Partizipation und stützen eine Rückführung der politischen Passivität prekärer Wohnviertel auf ihr limitiertes Sozialkapitalvermögen. Damit erweist sich nicht die statusbedingte Ressourcenausstattung als partizipationsrelevant, sondern erst deren Überführung in Sozialkapital. Die Datengrundlage bildet eine quantitative Befragung in zwei Kölner Stadtteilen.

Through a shift of conceptual emphasis from locality to location, the present volume departs from previous preoccupations with identity and belonging. In doing so, it stimulates debates on the interplay between location and region-making in history as well as anthropology.     Beschreibung: This chapter begins with the problem of ‘climate anxiety’, a psychological and cultural response to collapsing ecological systems marked by depression, trauma and helplessness. While a reasonable response to an existential threat, climate anxiety impedes our capacity to act where it leads to apathy, indecision or fatalism. The paper considers Jem Bendell’s argument that accepting and ‘grieving’ for inevitable civilisational collapse is a precondition to clear-sighted adaptation. This response is insufficient for the problem of motivation necessary for the capacity to act. It considers Martha Nussbaum’s 2018 claim that fear hinders reciprocity, amplifies infantile narcissism and endangers democracy. While salient, developing a countervailing ‘capacity for concern’ requires not merely a therapeutic relationship or the uncritical restitution of faltering liberal public institutions. Via Spinoza, an effective capacity to act against fear is conceived as interrelational and affective, founded on cooperation, friendship and the cultivation of causal knowledge. A common autonomy, one not merely of individual choice or identitarian self-expression.

    Beschreibung: The history of public education in Haiti has been characterized by an idealistic notion of extending the enlightenment of education throughout the country. This notion is reflected in the establishment of an important legal arsenal which, since the 19th century, has defined three main principles of the Haitian school system. These three principles have been a constant throughout the history of the country. They were intended to promote the expansion and democratization of schools in Haiti. Overshadowed by academic liberalism, the principles of free and compulsory education remain, however, merely an illusion for the majority of the country's children. Despite pompous speeches from its political leaders, Haiti has failed to catch up with the expansion and democratization of schools. Its educational system faces many challenges, including the problem of access to school, the lack of physical infrastructure and the shortage of qualified teaching staff. These challenges have extended the exclusion and inequality which stem from the contempt of the Haitian elites for the education of the people, in particular those in the countryside, and in an economic model based on food, not industry.

Mit der Frage nach der Stellung von Artefakten in Diskursen werden grundlegende Aspekte der Diskurstheorie und -analytik adressiert, die sich vor allem auf die Bestimmung der Ränder von Diskursen sowie der diskursiven Wirkmächtigkeit von Dingen beziehen. Auf diesem Wege wird eine Diskussion um die passenden konzeptuellen, begrifflichen und methodischen Instrumente diskursanalytischer Studien herausgefordert, zu der dieses Buch einen theoretischen und empirischen Beitrag leistet. Die entwickelte multimodale Dispositivanalyse wird im Rahmen einer qualitativ-empirischen Studie zu Drogentestpraktiken am Arbeitsplatz und im Straßenverkehr exemplarisch umgesetzt.
