    Description: In a global context in which phenomena of migration play an ever more important role, the ways individual and collective experiences of migration are covered in the media, represented in culture, and interpreted are coming under increasing scrutiny. This book explores the complex relationship between creative engagements with migration on the one hand, and forms of knowledge about migration on the other, inquiring into the ways aesthetic practices are intertwined with knowledge structures. The book responds to three pressing research questions. First, it analyses how fictional texts, plays, images, films, and autobiographical accounts mediate forms of knowledge about migration. Second, it identifies the ways in which specific media approaches and aesthetic practices influence people’s ideas about and awareness of migratory experiences in a globalized world. Finally, it delineates how historical perspectives help us compare epistemological approaches to migration in the nineteenth, twentieth, and early twenty-first centuries, and how these approaches affect the way critics and the public responded to and thought about different forms of (forced) migration. While this may seem obvious nowadays, even before the emergence of modern media, the methods of gathering, elaborating and transmitting information had a significant influence on the perception of risk and decision-making processes. The book examines how government bodies and different social actors handled emergencies in the Hispanic Monarchy, from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. It features case studies from the Hispanic Monarchy’s European, American and Asian territories, exploring the narrative strategies used in news-sheets and gazettes, the impact of disasters on information networks, how they interacted with political and social dynamics, and the effect of conflicting interpretations of extreme events.

    Description: In the recent cultural heritage boom, community-based and national identity projects are intertwined with interest in cultural tourism and sites of the memory of enslavement. Questions of historical guilt and present responsibility have become a source of social conflict, particularly in multicultural societies with an enslaving past. This became apparent in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, when statues of enslavers and colonizers were toppled, controversial debates about streets and places named after them re-ignited, and the European Union apologized for slavery after the racist murder of George Floyd. Related debates focus on museums, on artworks acquired unjustly in societies under colonial rule, the question of whether and how museums should narrate the hidden past of enslavement and colonialism, including their own colonial origins with respect to narratives about presumed European supremacy, and the need to establish new monuments for the enslaved, their resistance, and abolitionists of African descent. In this volume, we address this dissonant cultural heritage in Europe, with a strong focus on the tangible remains of enslavement in the Atlantic space in the continent. This may concern, for instance, the residences of royal, noble, and bourgeois enslavers; charitable and cultural institutions, universities, banks, and insurance companies, financed by the traders and owners of enslaved Africans; merchants who dealt in sugar, coffee, and cotton; and the owners of factories who profited from exports to the African and Caribbean markets related to Atlantic slavery. ; In the recent cultural heritage boom, community-based and national identity projects are intertwined with interest in cultural tourism and sites of the memory of enslavement.     Description: This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice.     Description: Who wants to champion the figure of Don Giovanni in the time of Harvey Weinstein and #MeToo? Don Giovanni is a rapist, murderer, serial seducer, and liar. Can he ever be held up as a role model or seen as a figure to be enjoyed? This is the task that the eminent Italian historian and lifelong feminist, Luisa Passerini, sets for herself in In Defense of Don Giovanni. As she developed the long arc of her distinguished career, Don Giovanni surprisingly became not only her role model but also a secret object of research. Taking her method from oral history, Passerini creates a series of characters with whom she discusses the forms and incarnations of the myth of Don Giovanni across time, from its first appearance in early medieval Spain and Commedia dell’Arte to its many European variations and its transposition to the colonial and postcolonial world in the Middle East, the Americas, and Africa. Pivoting round Don Giovanni’s best known incarnation in Mozart’s opera, Passerini and her interlocutors meet in different locations from Venice and Bern to Paris and Turin. They discuss plays, films, and operas and talk about art, novels, and psychoanalytic interpretations of the myth while also sharing their own life stories, in which Don Giovanni often plays a part that is, by turns, destructive, mischievous, and full of the joy of life. From his early beginnings in the Iberian Peninsula to recent analysis of the sexuality of colonial conquest and postcolonial revenge and return, Don Giovanni shape-shifts between rapacious hypermasculinity, comic trickster, and morally vacuous loser whose annoyingly persistent nemesis Don Ottavio emerges as an alternative and ultimately better object of desire. As she tracks Don Giovanni’s image across the world and through the centuries, however, Passerini comes to see that it also plays another role, that of a mirror, in which women can see themselves emerge as individuals with their own life force.

Scholarly essays are submitted to a double-blind peer review. Submissions by early-career comparative literature scholars are strongly encouraged.     Description: While Ibsen's plays were seldom performed in Romania in the first half of the 20th century, historical sources highlight his strong impact on the national theatre practice. To address this contradiction, Gianina Druta approaches the reception of Ibsen in the Romanian theatre in the period 1894-1947, combining Digital Humanities and theatre historiography. This investigation of the European theatre culture and the way in which the foreign acting and staging traditions influenced the Romanian Ibsenites provides new insights into mechanisms of aesthetic transmission. Thus, this study presents a European theatre landscape whose unpredictability and uniqueness cannot be confined to essentialist interpretations.

    Description: This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism, embodied in contemporary Nordic literature. While previous approaches to literary multilingualism have tended to take a textual or authorship focus, this book advocates for a theoretical perspective which reflects the multiplicity of languages in use in contemporary literature emerging from increased globalization and transnational interaction. This volume of re-examines this central question of African literatures to ask, What is the state of African literatures in African languages today?     Description: This is the first monographic study of the reception of Herman Hugo's emblem book Pia desideria (1624) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It discusses ten different translations and adaptations, showing how the engravings, elegies and exegetical extracts of the original edition were used by Polish-speaking authors. Attention is also given to the reception of the engravings in paintings. Furthermore, the author examines the reasons for the book's popularity, proving that it was determined by the interest of women who did not know Latin, yet constituted the most important target group for the numerous and varied Polish adaptations.

    Description: This monograph offers a detailed consideration of the five-volume novel written by Cao Xueqin and translated into English as The Story of the Stone, when read through William Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, A Tragedy in Five Acts. The book builds on the superlative David Hawkes/John Minford English language translation, which is inspired by resonances between the English Shakespearean literary heritage and the dynasties-old Chinese literary tradition inherited by Cao Xueqin. The Introduction sets out the potential for the significant cultural exchange between these two great literary works, each an inexhaustible inspiration of artistic and scholarly re-interpretation. Two chapters bring into consideration two universal literary themes: patriarchy – filial obedience and family honour, and tragic romantic love. These chapters are structured so that a key episode in Hamlet provides the initial perspective, which is then carried through to an episode in The Story of the Stone which offers points of complementarity: in-depth interpretation draws on inter-textual, historical and contemporary contexts referenced from the immense body of scholarly research which has accumulated around these iconic works. The third chapter proposes a new reading of the problematic ‘shrew’ character in the novel, Wang Xi-feng, through tracing the similarities of the structure of the narration of her life and death with a Shakespearean five-act tragedy.

    Description: La Fontaine affiche nettement sa filiation à l’égard de Marot. Du moins à l’égard d’un Marot. Comme beaucoup d’auteurs de son époque, il voit en effet dans le poète de L’Adolescence clémentine l’efflorescence printanière d’un style proprement français, qui allie au piquant et au brio la naïveté toute vernale d’une écriture. L’auteur des Fables et des Contes admire ainsi le brillant faiseur d’épigrammes. Il y reconnaît « le génie fran­çais », son ingenium, son naturel. Ce naturel s’exprime à la fois dans un esprit gaulois – que Rabelais radicalise trop pour qu’on puisse en faire un allié de marque – et une écriture transparente, non savante, à l’opposé de l’artificieuse et docte poésie de la Pléiade rejetée par le XVIIe siècle comme un accident regrettable dans l’histoire des formes. Cet « élégant badinage », assigné depuis Boileau à Marot, a pu nuire à l’œuvre de ce dernier en en restreignant la portée. La critique moderne a, par contraste, reconnu dans le poète de Cahors un esprit secret, anxieux, au cœur des débats évangéliques du premier XVIe siècle. Le vrai Marot est sûrement à rechercher au carrefour de ces deux interprétations extrêmes ; comme La Fontaine, au demeurant, que l’on ne peut réduire au modèle achevé de l’esthétique galante. La relation qui unit Marot et La Fontaine est bien en tout cas au départ une relation d’ordre formel. Aussi les chercheurs réunis ici ont tous tenté de repenser ou de repréciser les lectures stylistiques de l’un ou l’autre de ces auteurs à travers leur interprétation de L’Adolescence clémentine ou des Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon. La diversité des points de vue adoptés permet d’aider à définir ce qui reste en dernier lieu le plus difficile à caractériser, ce naturel du style, si revêche à l’analyse littéraire.

Yet behind the nation's official image of multicultural 'unity in diversity' lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. Against this backdrop, this book analyses how the idea of belonging - a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people - is problematised in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels. The island-nation's complex history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Waters explores how diverse forms of affirmative, affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, exclusionary 'politics of belonging' at communal, national or international levels. Using an eclectic theoretical approach to the central concept of belonging, Waters offers in-depth textual analyses of novels by leading Mauritian writers Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.

Yet one of the most widely distributed luxury commodities in the period was not new at all, and was produced locally—the book. In Necessary Luxuries Matt Erlin considers books and the culture around books during this period, focusing specifically on Germany where literature, and the fine arts in general, were the subject of soul-searching debates over the legitimacy of luxury in the modern world. Building on recent work done in the fields of consumption studies as well as the New Economic Criticism, Erlin combines intellectual-historical chapters (on luxury as a concept, luxury editions, and concerns about addictive reading) with contextualized close readings of novels by Campe, Wieland, Moritz, Novalis, and Goethe. As he demonstrates, artists in this period were deeply concerned with their status as luxury producers. The rhetorical strategies they developed to justify their activities evolved in dialogue with more general discussions regarding new forms of discretionary consumption.     Description: Avec sa Psychologie des foules (1895), Gustave Le Bon fut considéré comme l’inventeur d’une nouvelle science de la société. Pourtant, la généalogie conceptuelle montre que Le Bon, loin d’ouvrir, referme au contraire l’époque de la pensée de la foule, en la soumettant à sa pensée de la « race ». En effet, avant Le Bon, les théoriciens italiens avaient tenu ensemble, au prix de fortes tensions théoriques, un discours déterministe sur la foule et un discours en faveur de l’émancipation des classes dominées. Il est dès lors impossible de réduire la psychologie des foules à une idéologie réactionnaire. Un autre regard s’ouvre sur cette science sociale aujourd’hui disparue.

Dans un article devenu célèbre, « Pourquoi lire les classiques ? » (1981), un autre écrivain de l’Oulipo, l’Italien Italo Calvino, avait défi l’œuvre classique par sa lecture, énonçant la proposition suivante : « Toute relecture d’un classique est une découverte, comme la première lecture. » S’agissant de Perec, tout se passe en effet comme si cette canonisation avait bel et bien ouvert le champ des lectures possibles, permettant en particulier le dépassement de la perspective biographique pour l’intégrer à des approches diverses, qu’elles soient théoriques, génétiques, historiques, stylistiques ou plus largement poétiques. C’est de cette diversité, et de cette ouverture, critiques que ce volume rend compte, proposant ainsi une série de « découvertes » (comme le disait Calvino) pour inviter à la relecture d’une œuvre décidément inépuisable.

    Description: Joel B. Lande’s Persistence of Folly challenges the accepted account of the origins of German theater by focusing on the misunderstood figure of the fool, whose spontaneous and impish jest captivated audiences, critics, and playwrights from the late sixteenth through the early nineteenth century. Lande radically expands the scope of literary historical inquiry, showing that the fool was not a distraction from attempts to establish a serious dramatic tradition in the German language. Instead, the fool was both a fixture on the stage and a nearly ubiquitous theme in an array of literary critical, governmental, moral-philosophical, and medical discourses, figuring centrally in broad-based efforts to assign laughter a proper time, place, and proportion in society. Persistence of Folly reveals the fool as a cornerstone of the dynamic process that culminated in the works of Lessing, Goethe, and Kleist. By reorienting the history of German theater, Lande’s work conclusively shows that the highpoint of German literature around 1800 did not eliminate irreverent jest in the name of serious drama, but instead developed highly refined techniques for integrating the comic tradition of the stage fool.

    Description: Considéré d’habitude comme le « père » de l’anarchisme français, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon entretient un rapport ambivalent avec la création littéraire. Cet essai retrace tout d’abord la relation de Proudhon à la littérature, telle qu’elle apparaît à travers ses ouvrages. Il analyse ensuite les discours tenus dans ses quatre journaux sur les triomphes du roman-feuilleton, visant la conception d’un feuilleton révolutionnaire capable de diffuser auprès du lectorat populaire, par le biais de la fiction, les idées et les théories qui aideront à son affranchissement. Une présentation des romans-feuilletons parus dans les diverses incarnations du journal Le Peuple est suivie par une étude plus approfondie de l’un d’entre eux, le roman Le Mont Saint-Michel, qui narre les aventures d’un groupe de républicains lors du célèbre épisode de la barricade du cloître Saint-Merry, clou tragique de l’insurrection avortée de 1832. Convoquant de nombreux auteurs connus (Michelet, Stendhal, Victor Hugo et Alexandre Dumas père) et oubliés, cette analyse veut offrir une réflexion sur la nature du roman historique et de l’écriture historiographique pendant une période clef pour leur développement.

    Description: The present volume is a collection of 16 papers presented at the International Seminar ‘Liminal Spaces, and Identity Transformations in Indian Cultural History’ in Milan, in September 2019, when we were on the brink of a historical change unknowingly. And afterwards, during the pandemic experience, exploring liminality, as category of reality applied to Indian culture and especially to art and literature, appeared to be a means to cope with an emergency the likes of which had never been seen before. Obviously, this work does not aspire to be exhaustive, nonetheless, the heterogeneity of the contributions offers a multifaceted perspective: in actual fact, since liminality implies potentially myriads of interpretations, it appears to provide us with one of the main keys to addressing the entanglement of reality, especially the complexity of the Indian civilization, past and present. The focus is particularly on the literary and artistic aspects of such an extraordinary cultural heritage, from the Vedic period up to modernity; literature and arts are the lens through which variegated anthropological issues, crossing different historical phases, are investigated: firstly, the ritual question, in compliance with van Gennep and Turner’s approach, but also religious experiences, sovereignty and violence, dialectics of identity, social dynamics, gender identity, etc. Literature and arts, but still by means of their own aesthetic devices, mirror critical points characterising such issues, as if poetry and artwork, zooming in on specific transition elements, were themselves on the threshold of manifold layers of reality, able to pass through their interstitial discontinuities. Finally, it is a great honour to dedicate such a volume to the memory of Professor Alexander Dubyanskiy (1941–2020), eminent scholar in Indian literature, especially in Tamil poetry, who experienced multiple aspects of liminality both of the South Asian culture and life.

Ainsi seront identifiés, par cette approche comparative, les moments exacts où lettres et poèmes entrent en conversation, les instants où leurs voix se chevauchent ou se confondent, ainsi que ceux où elles se séparent.

    Description: What makes the work of the American experimental writer Kathy Acker so utterly relevant today, almost thirty years after her passing? The articles collected in this volume aim to provide answers to this question. Indeed, through studies of both Acker’s published and unpublished works, analyses of her writing process, and pieces blurring the boundaries between critical and creative writing, these articles map the writer’s body of works and weave webs the way the “Black Tarantula” would. Kathy Acker was part of a tradition of literary radicals and rebels of the 20th century avant-garde that flourished in the Counterculture and continued in the punk culture. Through acts of literary piracy and shock tactics, she unveiled and stood against techniques of domination and control. Indeed, she appropriated others’ texts, subverted genres and genders and thus challenged the rigidity of meaning and identity to allow them to fluctuate and flow. These texts confirm the central roles of both body and language in Acker’s works as spaces of friction between power and liberation and position the writer as a radical practitioner, a visionary.

    Description: Tabish Khair’s Just Another Jihadi Jane (2014) explores the global phenomenon of female suicide bombers after the emergence of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the international reconfiguration of geopolitical power after 9/11. Khair tells the story of Jamilla and Ameena, two British teenage girls of South Asian Muslim descent who decide to join Islamic State in their search for their religious ideal of Islamic truth and their impending need for belonging and recognition. This chapter analyzes the multi-dimensional complexity of vulnerability exposed both in the story thematization and in the narrative mode of fictional testimony (Ganteau 2015). Firstly, it describes the story emplotment vertebrated along two different axes: the socioeconomic and cultural context that articulates vulnerability as precarity (Butler 2004; 2009) and the conditions of the precariat (Standing 2011); and female vulnerability to oppression and patriarchal violence after the girls move to Syria. Secondly, this chapter investigates the materiality of the narrative medium of fictional testimony as a precarious yet creative vehicle to expose vulnerability. Ultimately, this chapter contends that Khair’s story and narrative form particularize the stereotyped jihadi Jane, shattering to pieces the sociopolitical ungrievability imposed on their différance (Derrida 1968) and their wasted lives (Bauman 2004).

    Description: Le recours à la mythologie, engagé en Espagne, dans l’enthousiasme mimétique du XVIe siècle, s’est poursuivi dans la fureur du baroque jusqu’au XVIIesiècle. Non, la Fable ne fut pas l’aliment d’une « froide rhétorique » ou un « appareil de divinités poussiéreuses », selon la critique généralement partagée, mais un opérateur palpitant, « l’âme de la poésie ». Manifestation médiatrice du lyrisme où le réel et le surnaturel se confondent dans le jeu subtil entre l’univers divin et l’univers humain. Une dimension esthétique sacrée de la poésie, parfaitement admise dans une Espagne éprise d’orthodoxie, l’occasion d’un admirable syncrétisme pagano-chrétien. Il fallait être aveugle pour ne pas voir la prodigieuse originalité que donnaient aux mythes les poètes du siècle d’Or dont nous étudions deux des principaux représentants : Garcilaso et Góngora. Mobilisant le potentiel fictionnel de la mythologie, ils ont repoussé les limites de la poéticité. Chacun est soumis à une triple analyse exploratoire : un examen quantitatif des fragments mythiques, une appréhension linguistique de leurs multiples fonctions, objet d’un authentique projet poétique rendu par une pénétrante géométrie dénotant l’unité singulière de leur paysage imaginaire. Le tout aboutissant à prouver que, chez un authentique poète, jamais rien n’est inutile, surtout pas la mythologie.

    Description: This open-access book investigates Francophone Caribbean literature by exploring and analyzing French seventeenth-century travel writings. The book argues for a literary re-examination of the representation of the early colonial Caribbean by proposing theoretical linkages to contemporary Caribbean theories of creolization and archipelagic thinking. Using Édouard Glissant’s notion of points of entanglement, Christina Kullberg claims that the historical, social, and political messiness of the Caribbean seventeenth century make for complex representations and expressions, generating textual instability despite the travelers’ apparent desires to domesticate the islands. Taking a synoptic approach to travel narratives in French from 1620 up to the publication of Labat’s Nouveau voyage aux Isles de l’Amérique in 1722, Kullberg examines textual instances where the islands and the peoples of this period disrupt and unsettle dominant French narratives and enter productively into the construction of knowledge and the representations of the region. Kullberg’s contribution is to read French early modern travels in situ as shaped by the archipelagic geography, its history and social formations in order to interrogate both the construction and the limitations of discourses of power.

Laisser entendre sans tout à fait dire, laisser entrevoir sans montrer directement, surprendre par l’obscénité du trait ou sa profondeur constituent autant d’objectifs assignés aux poètes burlesques du xviie siècle. Il existe dans leurs oeuvres un ensemble cohérent de procédés qui constituent une véritable poétique, que cet ouvrage entreprend d’établir et d’interpréter.

    Description: Four hundred years since its publication, Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote continues to inspire and to challenge its readers. The universal and timeless appeal of the novel, however, has distanced its hero from its author and its author from his own life and the time in which he lived. The discussion of the novel's Catholic identity, therefore, is based on a reading that returns Cervantes's hero to Cervantes's text and Cervantes to the events that most shaped his life. The authors and texts McGrath cites, as well as his arguments and interpretations, are mediated by his religious sensibility. Consequently, he proposes that his study represents one way of interpreting Don Quixote and acts as a complement to other approaches. It is McGrath's assertion that the religiosity and spirituality of Cervantes's masterpiece illustrate that Don Quixote is inseparable from the teachings of Catholic orthodoxy. Furthermore, he argues that Cervantes's spirituality is as diverse as early modern Catholicism. McGrath does not believe that the novel is primarily a religious or even a serious text, and he considers his arguments through the lens of Cervantine irony, satire, and multiperspectivism. As a Roman Catholic who is a Hispanist, McGrath proposes to reclaim Cervantes's Catholicity from the interpretive tradition that ascribes a predominantly Erasmian reading of the novel. When the totality of biographical and sociohistorical events and influences that shaped Cervantes's religiosity are considered, the result is a new appreciation of the novel's moral didactic and spiritual orientation.

    Description: Rich connections between gaming and theater stretch back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when England's first commercial theaters appeared right next door to gaming houses and blood-sport arenas. In the first book-length exploration of gaming in the early modern period, Gina Bloom shows that theaters succeeded in London's new entertainment marketplace largely because watching a play and playing a game were similar experiences. Audiences did not just see a play; they were encouraged to play the play, and knowledge of gaming helped them become better theatergoers. Examining dramas written for these theaters alongside evidence of analog games popular then and today, Bloom argues for games as theatrical media and theater as an interactive gaming technology. Gaming the Stage also introduces a new archive for game studies: scenes of onstage gaming, which appear at climactic moments in dramatic literature. Bloom reveals plays to be systems of information for theater spectators: games of withholding, divulging, speculating, and wagering on knowledge. Her book breaks new ground through examinations of plays such as The Tempest, Arden of Faversham, A Woman Killed with Kindness, and A Game at Chess; the histories of familiar games such as cards, backgammon, and chess; less familiar ones, like Game of the Goose; and even a mixed-reality theater videogame.

Cette fiction autobiographique témoigne d’une époque littéraire façonnée par l’expérience de l’exil et tourmentée par le sentiment de sa finitude. Paru en français pour la première fois en 1937, le roman est réédité ici dans une nouvelle traduction, proposée par Anne Reynès-Delobel, qui permet d’apprécier toute l’intensité et l’élégance de la prose poétique de Boyle, romancière moderniste unique, amoureuse des mots et de la vie. Femme aux multiples visages, architecte, écrivain, mère de six enfants, mariée à trois reprises, Kay Boyle (1902-1992) est un personnage hors du commun. Son œuvre considérable connut un très grand succès aux États-Unis. Le Cheval aveugle (The Crazy Hunter, 1940) a fait l’objet d’une traduction en 2008.

    Description: Jennifer Egan’s Manhattan Beach (2017) narrates the misadventures of young Irish Catholic Anna Kerrigan in her pursuit of a diving career in the New York docks during WWII. These misadventures are heavily conditioned by the accumulation of a series of structural vulnerabilities intersecting class, gender, religion, immigration, and disability, as well as political and economic corruption, which are emphasized against the backdrop of an impossible American Dream. The structural oppressions visibilized by Egan in this novel will thus serve to reflect on how the purported national invulnerability underlying USA’s imperialism in the second half of the 20th century was in fact based on obscuring national vulnerabilities that strongly resonate at the beginning of the new millennium. This chapter explores Egan’s formal experimentation with historical fiction as a calculated risk that draws its narrative strengths from the spectacularization of vulnerability while exposing the novel’s formal belatedness as a case of vulnerable narrative.

The transhumanist promise of human enhancement is presented in the series as hindering basic affect, self-awareness, and emotional response that in turn makes for human relational interdependence. Accordingly, it focuses on how the invulnerable transhuman figure is posed as a threat to subjectivity and autonomy. Vulnerability studies, ethics of care, neuroscientific theories on emotional sensations (interoception and exteroception awareness), and posthumanism give support to the chapter’s main thesis that this series posits characters’ fundamentally relational essence for wellbeing as based on rather different ethical grounds from those seen in the transhumanist paradigm, which is based on individualism, independence, autonomy and/or self-sufficiency via technology. For this study, theories on transhumanism, vulnerability, emotional, and ethical studies are introduced to give way to the analysis of the series. Firstly, the chapter explores Maniac’s representation of technology and mental health in a setting where characters seem to be in search of connections to move on to a discussion of the implications of relational and emotional engagement for characters’ wellbeing and autonomy.

La première partie fait le point sur l’état de l’institution dans l’avant-dernier siècle, telle que nous pouvons la penser aujourd’hui. La famille est appréhendée en tant que maisonnée dans l’espace, et lignée dans le temps ; dans le jeu de ses alliances et l’enchaînement de ses filiations ; dans ses fonctions sexuelle, économique, autoritaire et, de plus en plus, sentimentale ; sans oublier les infractions qui tout ensemble contestent et confirment ses règles. La deuxième partie examine comment, de la Révolution à l’aube de la Troisième République, la famille a suscité chez les penseurs différents types de discours : des formules conservatrices qui se réclament du nom du Père et de la Tradition, patriarcalisme et phallocentrisme ; en antithèse, des formules de contestation qui opposent à la famille un utopisme totalitaire (focalisé sur la Cité), libertaire (recentré sur le moi) ou féministe (défenseur du sexe opprimé) ; enfin, des formules « progressistes » qui affirment les droits de l’individu, du citoyen et du coeur, paternalisme éclairé, réformisme libéral, et familialisme romantique. Une telle étude apparaît d’autant plus opportune aujourd’hui que, un peu comme dans les décennies postrévolutionnaires, la famille est en pleine redéfinition, et se pense volontiers sur le mode de la crise.

    Description: In the seventies, as signs of decay began to show in the capitalist experiment of the newly independent African countries, a “bard of the misrule” emerged on the streets of Lagos. Often shirtless and armed with his trademark saxophone, Fela Anikulapo Kuti tore his way into popular culture with Afrobeat music. Blending ethno-traditional forms with the reigning highlife and jazz rhythms, Afrobeat drew lyrics from the flip side of neo-colonial society and Fela’s London and American experience in the sixties. In the two decades that followed, Fela ruled the nights from Afrika Shrine, his signature night club, and the days from the turntables of the restless city dwellers along the Atlantic coastline. Fela’s Afrobeat became a dynamic mode of expression in the social history of post-independent West Africa and generated a counterculture that bonded through music, drugs, resistance politics—and ultimately, the nascence of an Afrocentric contemporary global culture.

    Description: Ann Radcliffe publie en 1790 son deuxième roman, A Sicilian Romance, s’inscrivant dans le courant gothique, alors en vogue en Angleterre. À la fin du xvie siècle, deux jeunes filles de la noblesse, Julia et sa soeur Emilia, vivent dans un château solitaire sur la côte sicilienne. Elles ont perdu leur mère, et leur père, le marquis de Mazzini, qui s’est remarié et s’intéresse peu à elles, vit à Naples. Pour la majorité de leur frère Ferdinand, une fête est organisée au château. À cette occasion, Julia fait la connaissance du jeune comte de Vereza ; alors qu’un sentiment amoureux naît chez elle, le comte s’éloigne brusquement. Quelques jours plus tard, des bruits étranges se font entendre dans le sous-sol du château. Julia ou les souterrains du château de Mazzini est la première traduction de A Sicilian Romance ; elle parut en 1797. De la traductrice, Mme Moylin-Fleury, auteur de quelques romans oubliés, on ne sait rien. La série Imprimatur présente de grandes œuvres de la littérature étrangère dans la première traduction française qui en fut donnée ; cette traduction permet de renouer avec une esthétique qui préfère souvent le style à la fidélité, et de retrouver le texte tel qu’il apparut aux lecteurs contemporains.

    Description: An accessibly-written survey of the origins and growth of the discipline of medievalism studies. The field known as "medievalism studies" concerns the life of the Middle Ages after the Middle Ages. Originating some thirty years ago, it examines reinventions and reworkings of the medieval from the Reformation to postmodernity,from Bale and Leland to HBO's Game of Thrones. But what exactly is it? An offshoot of medieval studies? A version of reception studies? Or a new form of cultural studies? Can such a diverse field claim coherence? Should it be housed in departments of English, or History, or should it always be interdisciplinary? In responding to such questions, the author traces the history of medievalism from its earliest appearances in the sixteenth century to the present day, across a range of examples drawn from the spheres of literature, art, architecture, music and more. He identifies two major modes, the grotesque and the romantic, and focuses on key phases of the development of medievalism in Europe: the Reformation, the late eighteenth century, and above all the period between 1815 and 1850, which, he argues, represents the zenith of medievalist cultural production. He also contends that the 1840s were medievalism's one moment of canonicity in several European cultures at once. After that, medievalism became a minority form, rarely marked with cultural prestige, though always pervasive and influential. Medievalism: a Critical History scrutinises several key categories - space, time, and selfhood - and traces the impact of medievalism on each. It will be the essential guide to a complex and still evolving field of inquiry. David Matthews is Professor of Medieval and Medievalism Studies at the University of Manchester.

La variété des normes, des croyances et des valeurs qu’il enregistre témoigne d’une infinie diversité des hommes. Parallèlement à ses récits de voyage, l’auteur revendique pourtant, dans ses écrits historiques et politiques, un universel humain, appréhendé à l’aune de la liberté. Aussi particularismes et universalisme ne sont-ils pas contradictoires chez cet écrivain à la fois moraliste au sens classique et anthropologue au sens moderne, mais ils participent d’une dynamique au sein de laquelle notre modernité est appelée à s’orienter depuis plus de deux siècles. Dans son roman conçu comme laboratoire, l’auteur soumet l’homme à l’expérience de la philosophie du « comme si » pour mettre à l’épreuve sa nature ontologique. Si l’articulation entre diversité et unité humaines ne se fait pas sans heurts à l’échelle des Œuvres, elle trouve ainsi sa pleine expression dans la synthèse proposée par le Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse qui offre un des plus belles illustrations de la complexité de la philosophie relationniste.
