    Beschreibung: This study provides a quantitative and qualitative status report on the implementation of school-based management (SBM) in Indonesia, identifies factors associated with the successful practices of SBM, and assesses SBM effects on student achievement eight years after inception. They found that the implementation so far has produced limited success and provide recommendations to strengthen the nation’s SBM practices.

    Beschreibung: The California Preschool Study examined gaps in school readiness and achievement in the early grades among California children and the potential for high-quality preschool to close those gaps, the use of early care and education (ECE) services and their quality, and the system of publicly funded ECE programs for three- and four-year-olds. This analysis integrates the results from the prior studies and makes recommendations for preschool policy.

    Beschreibung: There is increasing evidence that the first few years after birth are particularly important in child development and present opportunities for enrichment but also vulnerabilities do to poverty and other social stressors. Elected officials have begun proposing potentially costly programs to intervene early in the lives of disadvantaged children. Have such interventions been demonstrated to yield substantial benefits? To what extent might they pay for themselves through lower welfare and criminal justice costs incurred by participating children as they grow into adults? This study synthesizes the results of a number of previous evaluations in an effort to answer those questions. Conclusions are that under carefully controlled conditions, early childhood interventions can yield substantial advantages to recipients in terms of emotional and cognitive development, education, economic well-being, and health. (The latter two benefits apply to the children's families as well.) If these interventions can be duplicated on a large scale, the costs of the programs could be exceeded by subsequent savings to the government. However, the more carefully the interventions are targeted to children most likely to benefit, the more likely it is that savings will exceed costs. Unfortunately, these conclusions rest on only a few methodologically sound studies. The authors argue for broader demonstrations accompanied by rigorous evaluations to resolve several important unknowns. These include the most efficient ways to design and target programs, the extent to which effectiveness is lost on scale-up, and the implications of welfare reform and other safety net changes.

Sin embargo, en los últimos años, el campo de estudios sobre la escuela se ha diversificado y especializado, encontrando nuevos objetos de estudio y ampliando los ya existentes, al tiempo que los temas y problemas educativos se hablan y debaten por toda la sociedad.

    Beschreibung: This report examines achievement in 62 schools pursuing a variety of personalized learning practices, and implementation details in 32 of the schools. It uses data from site visits, interviews, and surveys to create a broad picture of efforts to implement personalized learning and the perceptions of teachers and students. Achievement data for personalized learning students are compared to a matched group of students attending other schools.

    Beschreibung: For about two decades, say Johnson and Pace, the discussion of how to address prose style in teaching college writing has been stuck, with style standing in as a proxy for other stakes in the theory wars. The traditional argument is evidently still quite persuasive to some-that teaching style is mostly a matter of teaching generic conventions through repetition and practice. Such a position usually presumes the traditional view of composition as essentially a service course, one without content of its own. On the other side, the shortcomings of this argument have been much discussed-that it neglects invention, revision, context, meaning, even truth; that it is not congruent with research; that it ignores 100 years of scholarship establishing composition's intellectual territory beyond "service." The discussion is stuck there, and all sides have been giving it a rest in recent scholarship. Yet style remains of vital practical interest to the field, because everyone has to teach it one way or another. A consequence of the impasse is that a theory of style itself has not been well articulated. Johnson and Pace suggest that moving the field toward a better consensus will require establishing style as a clearer subject of inquiry. Accordingly, this collection takes up a comprehensive study of the subject. Part I explores the recent history of composition studies, the ways it has figured and all but effaced the whole question of prose style. Part II takes to heart Elbow's suggestion that composition and literature, particularly as conceptualized in the context of creative writing courses, have something to learn from each other. Part III sketches practical classroom procedures for heightening students' abilities to engage style, and part IV explores new theoretical frameworks for defining this vital and much neglected territory. The hope of the essays here-focusing as they do on historical, aesthetic, practical, and theoretical issues-is to awaken composition studies to the possibilities of style, and, in turn, to rejuvenate a great many classrooms.

RAND researchers conducted interviews, reviewed literature, examined case studies in other countries, provided analysis, and developed implementation guidelines.

    Beschreibung: The Cross Domain City of the Future Graduation Lab, situated in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft, has been a pioneer in experimenting with a multidisciplinary approach to education on the built environment. Drawing upon this expertise over the past years, this book reflects on multidisciplinarity in the built environment and its implementation in education on the built environment. How should one approach multidisciplinarity in education and practice? What encompasses its core elements, benefits, and challenges? By addressing these questions, the book aims to inform students and practitioners within the realm of the built environment by sharing insights from experiences in multidisciplinary education. It presents eight conclusions regarding the future of multidisciplinary education and, thereby, seeks to contribute to a more humane and sustainable future for cities: 1.Process is central to multidisciplinary collaboration. Negotiating positions, ensuring an environment of respect, balance and open-mindedness, and setting a common vocabulary. 2.Multidisciplinarity can be a way to foster innovation. It triggers complementarity and confrontation. As with any innovation, there is potential for greater outcomes, but, at the same time, extra risks emerge. These need to be managed. 3.Multidisciplinarity could be better integrated into organisational structures. 4.Disciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are in mutual coexistence. They are inseparable. They can complement and contradict each other. 5.Problem precedes solution, not the opposite. Framing the problem, or ‘problematizing’, is a considerable share of the actual solution. This is particularly applicable to multidisciplinarity. 6.Multidisciplinarity is by nature composed of fluid boundaries. Navigating through an enormous diversity of perspectives requires agility, flexibility, independence, spirit of adventure and embracing uncertainty. 7.Professionals should be trained as ‘T-shape’: grounded in their field while able to dialogue with other fields. 8.Both generalists and specialists are needed. Education should provide opportunities for both.

    Beschreibung: In (First Person)2, Day and Eodice offer one of the few book-length studies of co-authoring in academic fields since Lunsford and Ede published theirs over a decade ago. The central research here involves in-depth interviews with ten successful academic collaborators from a range of disciplines and settings. The interviews explore the narratives of these informants' experience-what brought them to collaborate, what cognitive and logistical processes were involved as they worked together, what is the status of collaborated work in their field, and so on-and situate these informants within the broader discussion of collaboration theory and research as it has been articulated over the last ten years. As the study develops, Day and Eodice become most interested in the affective domain of co-authorship, and they find the most promising explorations of that domain in the work of feminist theorists in composition. Against a background of feminist theory, the reflections of these informants and authors not only provide a window into the processes of current scholarship in writing, but also come to stand as a critique of traditional practice in English departments. Throughout the book, the two co-authors interrupt themselves with reflections of their own, on the rejection long ago of their proposal to co-author a dissertation, on their presuppositions about their research, on their developing commitment to the framework of feminist theory to account for their findings, and on their own processes and challenges in writing this book. The result is a well-centered volume that is disciplined and restrained in its presentation of research, but which is layered and multivocal in presentation, and which ends with some provocative conclusions.

Evidence-based approaches are increasingly transforming the way we educate, evaluate, and promote GME trainees. Bob Broad's 2003 volume, What We Really Value, introduced dynamic criteria mapping (DCM) as a method for eliciting locally-informed, context-sensitive criteria for writing assessments. The impact of DCM on assessment practice is beginning to emerge as more and more writing departments and programs adopt, adapt, or experiment with DCM approaches. For the authors of Organic Writing Assessment, the DCM experience provided not only an authentic assessment of their own programs, but a nuanced language through which they can converse in the always vexing, potentially divisive realm of assessment theory and practice.     Beschreibung: A clear need exists for substantial improvement in mathematics proficiency in U.S. schools. The RAND Mathematics Study Panel was convened to inform the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement on ways to improve the quality and usability of education research and development (R&D). The panel identified three areas for focused R&D: development of teachers' mathematical knowledge used in teaching; teaching and learning of skills needed for mathematical thinking and problem-solving; and teaching and learning of algebra from kindergarten through the 12th grade.

    Beschreibung: Esta edición se realiza en el contexto del Centenario de la Reforma Universitaria cordobesa de 1918 y del cincuentenario de los hechos de 1968: el Mayo Francés, el ’68 uruguayo, la passeata dos cen mil brasileña y la masacre de Tlatelolco. El año elegido constituye un ícono, donde el sentido común ha condensado toscamente la gran cantidad de movilizaciones estudiantiles inmediatamente anteriores y posteriores, como las ocurridas en Alemania Federal, Bélgica, Checoslovaquia, China, Corea, Egipto, España, Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos, Italia, Japón, Polonia, la Unión Soviética y Yugoslavia. En nuestro continente, además de los casos mencionados, también hubo grandes luchas estudiantiles en Argentina, Colombia y Chile, que aparecen en este volumen, y en Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Perú y Venezuela, que lamentablemente no cuentan con capítulos específicos en nuestro libro. Se trata de un libro verdaderamente colectivo, porque reunimos investigaciones con perspectivas teóricas y metodológicas diversas, sobre varios de los ciclos de movilización estudiantil más trascendentes de seis países latinoamericanos hacia fines de los ’60 y principios de los ’70, procesos a los que llamamos “los ‘68". Compartimos artículos realizados con el marco conceptual del marxismo y otros escritos desde las teorías de la acción colectiva; investigaciones que utilizaron como fuente principal los testimonios orales y otras que privilegiaron el registro hemerográfico, escritos de una densidad descriptiva notable y reflexiones conceptuales originales.     Beschreibung: Bruce McComiskey is a strong advocate of social approaches to teaching writing. However, he opposes composition teaching that relies on cultural theory for content, because it too often prejudges the ethical character of institutions and reverts unnecessarily to product-centered practices in the classroom. He opposes what he calls the "read-this-essay-and-do-what-the-author-did method of writing instruction: read Roland Barthes's essay 'Toys' and write a similar essay; read John Fiske's essay on TV and critique a show." McComiskey argues for teaching writing as situated in discourse itself, in the constant flow of texts produced within social relationships and institutions. He urges writing teachers not to neglect the linguistic and rhetorical levels of composing, but rather to strengthen them with attention to the social contexts and ideological investments that pervade both the processes and products of writing. A work with a sophisticated theory base, and full of examples from McComiskey's own classrooms, Teaching Composition as a Social Process will be valued by experienced and beginning composition teachers alike.

    Beschreibung: La meta principal de este estudio es averiguar –siguiendo la teoría de Frantz Fanon a través de su pedagogía obrera– los "mecanismos" conceptuales que podrán servir para una "relectura" de los Movimientos Sociales, observando al proceso pedagógico de Haití, con vistas a su transformación social y económica. De esa forma, ante el cuadro de emergencias en el que se encuentra Haití, surgieron preguntas respecto de cuáles serían las tareas más osadas de un educador que acepta el desafío como su responsabilidad. Preguntas como ésta, entre otras, nos han acompañado en el día-a-día, a lo largo de la escritura de este libro. Sin duda, el repensar a Haití y sus procesos educativos, consiste en un gran desafío que no puede ser asumido de forma aislada, sino de forma colectiva.

    Beschreibung: En ninguna otra época de la historia de la educación brasileña la infancia ha recibido tanta atención como en los días de hoy a tal punto que la educación infantil pasó a integrar la educación básica obligatoria. La aprobación de la Ley nº 12.796 en abril de 2013 que hizo compulsoria la matrícula a los cuatro años de edad en la Educación Infantil es tan sólo uno de los indicativos de cómo el tema de la infancia es central en la atención hodierna de educadores, gestores, investigadores, políticos y de la sociedad de modo general. Sin embargo, esa centralidad de la infancia e incluso la aprobación de la referida Ley, no nos garantiza que de veras se efectúe el cuidado educacional del niño. Por esa razón, tratar de la infancia, de su presencia en la escuela de forma compulsoria, de las condiciones de infraestructura para acoger a ese niño que llega más temprano a la escuela, de la manera como los municipios y las escuelas se están preparando para atender a esta nueva demanda formativa, son desafíos que necesitan ser enfrentados. El propósito de esta obra reside en contribuir para la calidad de la educación, especialmente la educación infantil. Esta obra presenta un estudio que hace una fotografía del esfuerzo de un municipio brasileño, de la región Sur, para hacer frente a la obligatoriedad legal de ofrecer educación infantil de calidad a los niños de 4 y 5 años. Más que etapa compulsoria, reflexiona sobre el derecho de tal nivel de escolarización, capaz de aportar elementos que contribuyan con las etapas subsecuentes de la Educación Básica. En esta perspectiva, el texto conyuga la ampliación del acceso con el desafío de la calidad.

    Beschreibung: For undergraduates following any course of study, it is essential to develop the ability to write effectively. Yet the processes by which students become more capable and ready to meet the challenges of writing for employers, the wider public, and their own purposes remain largely invisible. Developing Writers in Higher Education shows how learning to write for various purposes in multiple disciplines leads college students to new levels of competence. This volume draws on an in-depth study of the writing and experiences of 169 University of Michigan undergraduates, using statistical analysis of 322 surveys, qualitative analysis of 131 interviews, use of corpus linguistics on 94 electronic portfolios and 2,406 pieces of student writing, and case studies of individual students to trace the multiple paths taken by student writers. Topics include student writers' interaction with feedback; perceptions of genre; the role of disciplinary writing; generality and certainty in student writing; students' concepts of voice and style; students' understanding of multimodal and digital writing; high school's influence on college writers; and writing development after college. The digital edition offers samples of student writing, electronic portfolios produced by student writers, transcripts of interviews with students, and explanations of some of the analysis conducted by the contributors. This is an important book for researchers and graduate students in multiple fields. Those in writing studies get an overview of other longitudinal studies as well as key questions currently circulating. For linguists, it demonstrates how corpus linguistics can inform writing studies. Scholars in higher education will gain a new perspective on college student development. The book also adds to current understandings of sociocultural theories of literacy and offers prospective teachers insights into how students learn to write. Finally, for high school teachers, this volume will answer questions about college writing.

    Beschreibung: International librarianship stems from a desire to bring about political change, transcultural understanding, collaboration, and mutual respect. Historically, librarians have been deeply involved with challenging issues of information sharing, equity in information access, and bridging the digital divide between different socioeconomic communities. This collection draws on case studies from American librarians who traveled to Central America, the Caribbean, Central Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, and Asia to participate in librarian-initiated and sponsored projects. They united communities, promoted religious and cultural tolerance, developed new facilities, or enhanced existing libraries and archives, thereby enriching communities with resources, professional expertise, new partnerships, and sustainable development practices. 〈i>International Librarianship〈/i> offers insight into how these experiences might serve as templates and promote best practices in collaborations within the library profession in the United States and abroad, and it also demonstrates how international experiences can enliven home institutions upon return.

    Beschreibung: This book explores the extent and causes of attrition and retention in university Language & Culture (L&C) programs through a detailed analysis of an institutional case study at The Australian National University (ANU). Using extensive data collected through student surveys, coupled with data mining of university-wide enrolment data, the authors explore the enrolment and progress of students in all ANU L&C programs. Through their detailed statistical analysis of attrition and retention outcomes, the authors reveal serious inadequacies in the traditional, and common, methodology for determining the extent of student attrition and retention in tertiary L&C programs. Readers are shown why a year-to-year comparison of students who continue or discontinue language studies using traditional statistical methodology cannot provide data that is sufficiently meaningful to allow for sound policy- and decision-making. The authors instead suggest a more valid, replicable methodology that provides a new approach potentially applicable to all disciplines and all student retention measures. The authors also demonstrate that the empirical data supports a new hypothesis for the reasons for attrition, based on students’ relative belief or doubt in their capacity to complete their studies successfully. By highlighting the importance of language capital as a factor in students’ concerns about their capacity for success, and hence in their decisions to stay in, or leave, a university language program, the authors show the importance of the ‘doubters’ dilemma’. By taking a rigorous approach to hypothesis building and testing around enrolment and attrition data, the authors provide valuable insights into attrition issues, and potential retention strategies, in L&C programs, which will be relevant to institutions, policy-makers and teaching academics.

    Beschreibung: Aslam Fataar, one of South Africa’s few educational sociologists working with ethnographic methods, captures the complex interactions and dynamics between social life, school processes and youth subjectivity in townships in the Western Cape. His work with concepts of mobilities and space is enormously generative, providing a way for teachers, principals, communities and policy makers to engage with the ‘complex ecologies’ of young people’s learning in urban schools. As an astute policy analyst, he also well knows the systemic barriers in the way of achieving this. The last chapter, on possibilities for pedagogical justice at the site of the school, considers how disengaged students might re-engage through leveraging explicit pedagogic connections between their lifeworlds and school practices. Acknowledging that pedagogy cannot be the only means for revitalising schooling, the author nevertheless insists that marginalised young people’s consent needs to be won by schools that make use of, rather than ignore, their strengths, knowledges and aspirations. The approach to the troubled question of youth and subjectivity is enlightening, and vital to understanding the post-apartheid city and school. The book fills a much-needed gap in educational sociology in South Africa.

    Beschreibung: The argument of this collection is that the cultural and intellectual legacies of postmodernism impinge, significantly and daily, on the practice of the Writing Program Administrator. WPAs work in spaces where they must assume responsibility for a multifaceted program, a diverse curriculum, instructors with varying pedagogies and technological expertise-and where they must position their program in relation to a university with its own conflicted mission, and a state with its unpredictable views of accountability and assessment. The collection further argues that postmodernism offers a useful lens through which to understand the work of WPAs and to examine the discordant cultural and institutional issues that shape their work. Each chapter tackles a problem local to its author's writing program or experience as a WPA, and each responds to existing discord in creative ways that move toward rebuilding and redirection. It is a given that accepting the role of WPA will land you squarely in the bind between modernism and postmodernism: while composition studies as a field arguably still reflects a modernist ethos, the WPA must grapple daily with postmodern habits of thought and ways of being. The effort to live in this role may or may not mean that a WPA will adopt a postmodern stance; it does mean, however, that being a WPA requires dealing with the postmodern.

    Beschreibung: In the name of efficiency, the practice of education has come to be dominated by neoliberal ideology and procedures of standardization and quantification. Such attempts to make all aspects of practice transparent and subject to systematic accounting lack sensitivity to the invisible and the silent, to something in the human condition that cannot readily be expressed in an either-or form. Seeking alternatives to such trends, Saito reads Dewey’s idea of progressive education through the lens of Emersonian moral perfectionism (to borrow a term coined by Stanley Cavell). She elucidates a spiritual and aesthetic dimension to Dewey’s notion of growth, one considerably richer than what Dewey alone presents in his typically scientific terminology.

    Beschreibung: The presence and experiences of Black people at elite universities have been largely underrepresented and erased from institutional histories. This book engages with a collection of these experiences that span half a century and reflect differences in class, gender, and national identifications among Black scholars. By mapping Black people's experiences of studying and teaching at McGill University, this book reveals how the "whiteness" of the university both includes and exceeds the racial identities of students and professors. It highlights the specific functions of Blackness and of anti-Blackness within society in general and within the institution of higher education in particular, demonstrating how structures and practices of the university reproduce interlocking systems of oppression that uphold racial capitalism, reproduce colonial relations, and promote settler nationalism. Critically engaging the work of Black learners, academics, organizers, and activists within this dynamic political context, this book underscores the importance of Black Studies across North America.

    Beschreibung: Der vorliegende Band konzentriert sich – wie der Titel bereits deutlich macht – auf die Vorstellung und Besprechung neuer Methoden der Dokumentation sowie der Visualisierung, die besonders in den letzten Jahren auch im Rahmen der Vasenforschung zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen haben. So werden in acht ausgewählten Beiträgen von insgesamt 19 Autoren neue Dokumentationsmethoden vorgestellt. Unter diesen finden sich einerseits bereits erprobte Techniken, die in anderen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen mittlerweile zum State-of-the-Art gehören, und andererseits vollkommen neue Methoden, deren Entwicklung und Erprobung gleichsam ein Work-in-Progress darstellen. Allen besprochenen Visualisierungs- und Dokumentationsmethoden, die einander vielfach unterstützen und ergänzen, gemein ist ihre vielseitige Anwendbarkeit – nicht nur in der archäologischen Grundlagenforschung sondern auch im Ausstellungs- und Museumswesen sowie in der Lehre. Die Idee und die Notwendigkeit zu vorliegendem Band ergaben sich im Zuge aktueller Arbeiten am nationalen Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum. Die hierbei verwendeten neuen Dokumentationsmethoden aus den unterschiedlichsten Wissenschaftsbereichen vorzustellen und die mitunter auftretenden Schwierigkeiten und Lösungsansätze zu diskutieren, war und ist jedoch im Rahmen des Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum nicht möglich, sieht doch das CVA-Publikationskonzept vornehmlich die katalogartige Erfassung des Materials unter besonderer Berücksichtigung kunsthistorischer Überlegungen und Fragestellungen vor.Gedruckt mit Unterstützung des Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF).

    Beschreibung: Presenting an analysis of higher education in eight countries in the Arab Middle East and North Africa, Degrees of Dignity works to dismantle narratives of crisis and assert approaches to institutional reform. Drawing on policy documents, media narratives, interviews, and personal experiences, Elizabeth Buckner explores how apolitical external reform models become contested and modified by local actors in ways that are simultaneously complicated, surprising, and even inspiring. Degrees of Dignity documents how the global discourses of neoliberalism have legitimized specific policy models for higher education reform in the Arab world, including quality assurance, privatization, and internationalization. Through a multi-level and comparative analysis, this book examines how policy models are implemented, with often complex results, in countries throughout the region. Ultimately, Degrees of Dignity calls on the field of higher education development to rethink current approaches to higher education reform: rather than viewing the Arab world as a site for intervention, it argues that the Arab world can act as a source for insight on resilient higher education systems.

The results suggest that such a requirement is not currently feasible. However, it would instead be desirable to offer incentives for a variety of efforts made toward achieving proficiency, both before and after commissioning.

    Beschreibung: The Ford Foundation developed the Collaborating for Education Reform Initiative, providing grants to collaboratives in urban settings to improve the quality of teaching. Eight sites signed on, and the RAND Corporation assessed their progress. The authors found that, while none had met final goals, the collaboratives had varying degrees of success and some offered promise. By adopting such techniques as clear communication of expectations and involvement of school staff, collaboratives stand a better chance of success.

    Beschreibung: Scotland developed a series of educational surveys between the late-1940s and the early-21st century that allow the country’s experience of education to be studied in systematic detail. No other country has an archive of this length and depth. The surveys include evidence on pupils’ curriculum, attainment, subjective experience of school, and destinations after leaving school, as well as details of their social characteristics and of the secondary schools which they attended. By linking also to archival evidence on the histories of schools, the book’s analysis investigates the interplay between deliberate policy and wider social change. The transformation of education in this period is accompanied by equally important economic restructuring which has led to unprecedented changes in the way that education relates to lifelong opportunity in the twenty-first century. The book investigates how these changes have underpinned Scotland’s civic values, and have contributed fundamentally to shaping the debate about the country’s constitutional future.

    Beschreibung: Este libro propone una reflexión sobre el complejo papel que las universidades tienen en nuestras historias recientes, a partir de la pregunta por los modos en que las mismas reciben y participan en los procesos políticos, económicos y culturales en los que están inmersas. Centrado en el caso de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, a las puertas del bicentenario de su fundación, Profesores, Científicos e Intelectuales expresa un análisis del papel que ha asumido la UBA en la historia argentina desde 1955, por momentos desagregado a los modos en que sus profesores y profesoras han construido posicionamientos públicos pocas veces exentos de contradicciones y resistencias. La investigación que aquí se sintetiza reconstruye parcialmente el recorrido de estas décadas, discute algunas de las lecturas canónicas y abre un espacio para los debates sobre un futuro que no es solo el de esa universidad o del sistema universitario.

    Beschreibung: The volume presents research that emerges from the 9th International Adult Education Academy (2022), which brings together researchers, students and practitioners from around the world to share perspectives comparatively. More than 80 participants from almost 20 different countries have exchanged, compared and expanded their individual knowledge and experience on adult learning and education. This volume consisting of eight contributions (including one fundamental article beforehand) assumes that globalisation affects national, regional and local levels of adult learning and education. Transformational relations are observed and analysed through the lens of participation, sustainability and digitalisation. All contributions apply an international comparative research approach to empirically investigate these areas with their upcoming needs. This approach takes place under consideration of comparison as a research method which not only grounds on a long tradition and relies on a set of rules and techniques, but also on an inner attitude and sensitivity with which we look at the world and its global needs while trying to understand.
