    Description: La journée d’étude « Le consulat de France à Cadix (1666-1740) : institution, intérêts et enjeux », organisée par les Archives nationales, fut l’occasion de faire le point sur les enjeux politico-diplomatiques, les intérêts commerciaux et les rivalités entre Européens autour du consulat français de Cadix entre 1660 et 1750. Elle s’articule autour de quatre thèmes principaux : les archives du consulat de Cadix sous l’Ancien Régime, la représentation et la présence françaises en Espagne sous le roi Philippe V, le grand commerce à Cadix et enfin l'importance de Cadix pour les places maritimes et financières françaises.

    Description: Le but de l’Union européenne est aujourd’hui de bâtir une société politique commune, à même de prolonger une intégration qui, de fait, ne s’est basée jusqu’ici que sur des éléments matériels. Ainsi, la thématique identitaire prend-elle de l’importance, donnant la priorité aux sciences humaines dans la réflexion sur notre avenir communautaire, mais aussi sur notre passé commun. Forts de ce constat, différents chercheurs en sciences humaines ont décidé de croiser leurs regards sur l’histoire de la construction européenne. Le but en était également de confronter différentes méthodes d’investigation, et de faite le bilan d’études parallèles qui ne demandaient qu’à s’entrecroiser au profit de toutes C’est cette première journée programmatique que nous publions ici : elle contient les principaux questionnements qui touchent les chercheurs sur l’Europe dans les spécialités du droit, de la géographie et de l’histoire. Bien entendu, les pistes lancées ne peuvent qu’être enrichies par les futures rencontres, mais elles donnent d'ores et déjà une direction à une collaboration inédite, et des réponses, bien entendu à approfondir, aux premières questions que pose cette analyse pluridimensionnelle de l’Europe.

    Description: This book is comprised of important reviews and cutting-edge original research papers concerning electrospun and electrosprayed formulations in drug delivery. Electrospinning and electrospraying have, in recent years, attracted increasing attention in the pharmaceutical sector, with research in the area advancing rapidly. It is now possible to prepare extremely complex systems using multi-fluid processes, and to increase production rates to an industrial scale. Electrospun formulations can be produced under GMP conditions and are in clinical trials. In this volume, we explore a range of topics around electrospinning and electrospraying in controlled drug delivery. Four reviews cover the exciting potential of cyclodextrin-containing fibers and the many potential biomedical applications of electrospun fibers. The use of electrospinning to prepare amorphous systems and improve the dissolution rate and solubility of poorly soluble active ingredients is addressed, and the possibilities of such materials in tissue engineering are comprehensively covered. The six original research papers cover the effect of molecular properties on API release from Eudragit-based electrospun fibers; ferulic acid solid dispersions; electrospun medicines to treat psoriasis; scale up of electrospinning and its use to produce low-dose tablets; transepithelial permeation of drugs released from electrospun fibers, and the possibilities for the synergistic chemophotothermal treatment of cancer.

La guerre classique, comme le jeu de Stratego ou les échecs, repose sur des champs réglés et symétriques. Avec la guerre moderne, cet espace agonal d’un combat « chevaleresque » comme jeu « noble » (Huizinga) cède sa place à un espace de la terreur et de la mort aléatoire et sans limites. Le terrorisme actuel s’apparente à un jeu de hasard mortel. La stratégie nucléaire, quand bien même fondée sur la théorie des jeux et un équilibre statistique, demeure aujourd’hui un pari macabre et fatal. Ce livre offre une réflexion dynamique et transversale sur les multiples facettes culturelles de cette relation paradoxale qui lie le jeu et la guerre moderne : de Naudé concevant le peuple comme un pion manipulé par un souverain démiurge, aux analogies médiatiques entre musique et guerre dans le documentaire filmique Heavy Metal in Baghdad, en passant par Schlieffen élaborant sa stratégie dans des Kriegsspiele militaires, ou encore par le Jeu de la Guerre de Debord et son adaptation « situationniste » en wargame informatique.     Description: Fluid intake has barely been assessed, and hydration status has only rarely been measured in epidemiological studies. This hampers attempts to assess the adequacy of water intake at a population level. However, although guidelines have been established to determine how much water humans require to avoid dehydration and to optimize physical and psychological function, limited data are available on the total water and beverages intake. Therefore, the percentage of population with inadequate water intake is unknown. There is a clear need for studies in different settings around the world that quantify total water and beverage intake and explore associations between types of beverages consumed and energy intake.

    Neuroimmune Interface in Health and Diseases (2021)

    Description: It is now well appreciated that the immune system, in addition to its traditional role in defending the organism against pathogens, communicate in a well-organized fashion with the brain to maintain homeostasis and regulate a set of neural functions. Perturbation in this brain-immune interactions due to inflammatory responses may lead to psychiatric and neurological disorders. Microglia are one of the essential cells involved in the brain-immune interactions. Microglial cells are now not simply regarded as resident tissue macrophages in the brain. These cells are derived from myeloid progenitor cells in the yolk sac in early gestation, travel to the brain parenchyma and interact actively with neurons during the critical period of neurogenesis. Microglia provide a trophic support to developing neurons and take part in the neural wiring through the activity-dependent synapse elimination via direct neuron-microglia interactions. Altered microglial functions including changes in the gene expression due to early life inflammatory events or psychological and environmental stressors can be causally related to neurodevelopmental diseases and mental health disorders. This type of alterations in the neural functions can occur in the absence of infiltration of inflammatory cells in the brain parenchyma or leptomeninges. In this sense, the pathogenetic state underlying a significant part of psychiatric and neurological diseases may be similar to “para-inflammation”, an intermediate state between homeostatic and classical inflammatory states as defined by Ruslan Medzhitov (Nature 454:428-35, 2008). Therefore, it is important to study how systemic inflammation affects brain health and how local peripheral inflammation induces changes in the brain microenvironment. Chronic pain is also induced by disturbance in otherwise well-organized multisystem interplay comprising of reciprocal neural, endocrine and immune interactions. Especially, early-life insults including exposure to immune challenges can alter the neuroanatomical components of nociception, which induces altered pain response later in life. Recently the discrete roles of microglia and blood monocyte-derived macrophages are being defined. The distinction may be further highlighted by disorders in which the brain parenchymal tissue is damaged. Therefore, studies investigating the dynamics of immune cells in traumatic brain injury and neurotropic viral infections including human immunodeficiency virus, etc. as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are promising to clarify the interplay between the central nervous and immune systems. The understanding of the histological architecture providing the infrastructure of such neuro-immune interplay is also essential. This Frontiers research topic brings together fourteen articles and aims to create a platform for researchers in the field of psychoneuroimmunology to share the recent theories, hypotheses and future perspectives regarding open questions on the mechanisms of cell-cell interactions with chemical mediators among the nervous, immune and endocrine systems. We hope that this platform would reveal the relevance of the studies on multisystem interactions to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms underlying a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

    Description: Trapped charge dating is a commonly used chronological tool in Earth Sciences and Archaeology. The two principle methods are luminescence dating and electron spin resonance. Both are based on stored energy produced by the absorption of natural radioactivity in common minerals such as quartz and feldspars, and in some biological materials such as tooth enamel. Methodological developments in the last 20 years have substantially increased the accuracy and precision of these methods. This compilation offers a taste of the recent research into both method and applications.

    Description: Du tournant du xxe siècle à 1932, lorsque, sous l'impulsion de James Maxton, le parti travailliste indépendant se désaf-filia d'un parti travailliste jugé trop timoré, le mouvement ouvrier écossais servit de laboratoire d'idées à la gauche britannique, auquel il fournit ses personnalités les plus marquantes, travaillistes (Keir Hardie puis Ramsay MacDonald), travaillistes indépendants de l'ILP (Maxton, John Wheatley), communistes orthodoxes (Tom Bell, Willie Gallacher) ou rebelles (John Maclean). Outre qu'elle présentait une structure de l'emploi qui faisait la part belle à l'aristocratie ouvrière des mines, des chantiers navals et de la construction mécanique, l'Ecosse bénéficiait d'un système d'enseignement plus démocratique que l'anglais, et les débats idéologiques s'y nourrissaient de l'apport d'une catégorie quasi inconnue en Angleterre : les intellectuels diplômés d'origine ouvrière. C'est à Glasgow que se déroulèrent les luttes les plus originales de la période (grève des loyers de 1915, largement conduite par des femmes, et, en 1919, grève pour la semaine de quarante heures), que furent fondées les premières écoles socialistes du dimanche et que les collèges ouvriers connurent leur plus solide implantation. La contre-culture prolétarienne qui se développa en Ecosse est au cœur de ce livre, qui se penche, en outre, sur le déclin démographique et économique du pays, sur les conditions de vie et de travail de la classe ouvrière, sur les débats - notamment la question nationale - et les luttes qu'elle mena.

Outils d'évangélisation, de colonisation, d'enseignement, de propagande religieuse et politique, mais aussi moyens d'exploration, de connaissance, de libération, le livre et l'imprimé ont contribué à la création d'une histoire nationale et à la construction de l'identité des peuples qui se côtoient désormais sur le territoire. Ce premier volume de l'Histoire du livre et de l'imprimé au Canada retrace le parcours de l'imprimé, depuis le débarquement des premiers colons en Nouvelle-France jusqu'aux Rébellions de 1837 et de 1838, en passant par l'apparition du premier imprimé à Halifax en 1752 et la constitution des premières bibliothèques publiques et privées. Il démontre avec clarté que l'imprimé sous toutes ses formes, que ce soit les placards, journaux, almanachs, illustrés, livres de cuisine ou ouvrages d'érudition, a fait partie intégrante de la vie quotidienne des Canadiens. Enfin, il dresse un portrait vivant de l'auteur et du lecteur, mais aussi de tous les artisans des métiers du livre et de l'imprimerie, de l'apprenti à l'éditeur imprimeur, en les replaçant dans leur contexte social et historique.

    Inhibiting PARP as a Strategic Target in Cancer (2021)

    Description: Poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) proteins are critical mediators of DNA repair. Many traditional anti-cancer chemotherapy agents overwhelm a cell’s ability to repair DNA damage in order to kill proliferating malignant cells. Recent evidence suggests that cancers within and across tissue types have specific defects in DNA repair pathways, and that these defects may predispose for sensitivity and resistance to various classes of cytotoxic agents. Breast, ovarian and other cancers develop in the setting of inherited DNA repair deficiency, and these cancers may be more sensitive to cytotoxic agents that induce DNA strand breaks, as well as to inhibitors of PARP activity. A series of recent clinical trials has tested whether PARP inhibitors can achieve synthetic lethality in hereditary DNA repair-deficient tumors. At the current time, mutation of BRCA serves as a potential, but not comprehensive, biomarker to predict response to PARP inhibitor therapy. Mechanisms of resistance to PARP inhibitors are only recently being uncovered. Future studies seek to identify sporadic cancers that harbor genomic instability rendering susceptibility to PARP inhibitors that compound lethal DNA damage.

L'étudier permet donc de comprendre l'environnement dans lequel elle évolue, mais son étude n'est concevable qu'en relation avec son milieu ambiant. Une monographie offre le mérite de présenter l'ensemble des questions dans un microcosme dont l'analyse détaillée autorise une relative exhaustivité. Cette recherche sur la famille en Gévaudan au XVe siècle repose principalement sur l'exploitation de cent cinquante-neuf cotes notariales des archives de la Lozère, soit un ensemble de près de vingt-deux mille folios. Le travail réalisé est fortement marqué par le droit, la sociologie et l'ethnologie. Le recours à la prosopographie et à la généalogie a permis d'appréhender les influences exercées par la famille sur la société et les systèmes d'alliance.

    Description: Franc-maçonnerie et Révolution ont permis, depuis le classement des sources maçonniques déposées à la Bibliothèque Nationale par Alain Le Bihan il y a plus de trente ans, de mener de nombreuses études fondées sur une approche positiviste. Détruisant progressivement les thèses qui, derrière des oripeaux renouvelés, visaient à faire des loges et des maçons des acteurs portant culture et pratiques révolutionnaires, les recherches successives ont souvent montré que cette forme de sociabilité subissait plus les événements qu'elle ne les infléchissait. Il était cependant devenu nécessaire de dépasser ce constat pour tenter de saisir les temps et les formes de la transformation rencontrée par la franc-maçonnerie durant la période révolutionnaire. En plaçant 1789 au cœur de sa trame chronologique, c'est l'objectif que s'est fixé cette étude. Située dans le cadre d'une province vaste et peuplée où le "fait maçonnique" toucha près de 6000 francs-maçons rassemblés dans plus de cent loges et chapitres de hauts grades, la recherche, menée à partir de la constitution d'un vaste fichier informatisé, analyse la formation du réseau maçonnique puis met en lumière destins collectifs et individuels. La sociabilité maçonnique apparaît alors comme un large espace de socialisation qui, au xviiie siècle, reflète, dans ses structures sociologiques profondes, les tensions minant la société d'Ordres. Investie par le politique, se détachant progressivement du cordon du catholicisme, elle devient au fil du temps, notamment par le canal philanthropique qui fonde son identité originelle et permet l'affirmation progressive de son rayonnement vers le monde extérieur, un espace culturel profondément transformé. À partir de la réaction Ultra, les loges normandes peuvent ainsi résolument s'intégrer dans la nébuleuse des "cercles" et les hommes qui la fréquentent montrer, pour la plupart, une sensibilité caractérisée par l'adhésion au libéralisme politique. La franc-maçonnerie, parce qu'elle fut radicalement transformée par l'événement révolutionnaire, est alors prête à participer aux grandes batailles politiques et culturelles qui jalonneront son histoire à partir de 1848.

    Description: Gluten is the major protein of wheat and other cereals (rye and barley); it is responsible for triggering celiac disease (CD) in genetically predisposed individuals. Until a few years ago, CD was the major (if not the only) well-known gluten-related disorder. However, in recent years, it has become clear that gluten proteins may activate different pathological mechanisms, leading to a wide spectrum of human diseases, including non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), gluten ataxia, neuro-psychiatric disorders, and many others. Conceptually, we have therefore moved from a Ptolemaic to a Copernican system, i.e., CD is no longer the “center of the universe”, but is just one of the possible worlds of gluten intolerance. Many other gluten planets do indeed exist and deserve the attention of researchers and clinicians alike. Although different gluten-related disorders show specific epidemiological, pathophysiological, and clinical aspects, these conditions share a trigger and treatment: the gluten-free diet. For a very long time, awareness of these disorders has been limited and, therefore, the epidemiology of gluten-related disorders is still a “work in progress”. Current research strives to clarify the boundaries between these entities, their disease mechanisms, and how a proper diagnosis can be implemented.

Par routine ou par paresse, on pense en premier lieu à l’irruption de Martin Luther et des autres protagonistes de la Réforme protestante et à la scission de la chrétienté latine. Mais toute l’Europe n’est pas chrétienne : les temps modernes s’ouvrent avec l’expulsion, les conversions forcées et la persécution des juifs et des musulmans dans la péninsule Ibérique de la Reconquista. Et il y a une Europe ottomane, elle aussi pluri-religieuse. L’expérience européenne des conflits religieux se fait en outre dans un horizon global de la rencontre avec d’autres religions et civilisations où les Européens découvrent leur propre barbarie. Celle-ci s’exprime dans les atrocités des guerres civiles, des guerres de religion en France à l’action des troupes de Cromwell en Irlande. Partant de la pluralité religieuse de l’espace européen, les affrontements de la première modernité se lisent comme un douloureux processus d’apprentissage d’accepter et de gérer cette pluralité irréductible. Ainsi naît une notion et forme historique, politique et culturelle de l’Europe qui intègre dans sa constitution la conflictualité religieuse. Les contributions ici réunies analysent ce processus couvrant tout l’espace européen. Cet ouvrage est né de la collaboration d’un groupe d’historien(ne)s européen(ne)s spécialistes de ces questions et montre la richesse du paysage historiographique européen.

Their ontogeny, together with the absence of turnover from the periphery and the singular environment of the central nervous system (CNS), make microglia a unique cell population compared to other tissue-macrophages. The unique properties and functions of microglial cells, such as their role in synaptic pruning or the exceptional capacity to scan the brain parenchyma and rapidly react to its perturbations, have emerged in recent years. In the coming years, understanding how microglia acquire and maintain their unique profiles in order to fulfil distinct tasks in the healthy CNS and how these are altered in disease, will be essential to develop strategies to diagnose or treat CNS disorders with an immunological component. This Research Topic covers several aspects of microglial biology, ranging from their origin and the functional role of microglia during development and lifespan, their molecular properties compared with other brain and peripheral immune cells to microglial phenotypes and functional states in neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumours.     Description: Ce recueil, réunissant des chercheurs beiges et congolais, témoigne du regain d'intérêt que suscite l'histoire du Congo en Belgique depuis quelques années. Par l'analyse croisée et contradictoire si nécessaire pour rendre compte de la réalité historique des événements survenus entre 1955 et 1960, il souligne les cinquante ans de la publication du manifeste Conscience africaine le 30 juin 1956 ou le 1er juillet 1956. En concentrant l'attention sur l'événement retenu dans la chronologie de la prise de conscience politique des Congolais, on réduit la complexité des courants ayant porté ce texte, comme le montrent à l'envi les contributions réunies ici. Cependant, la commémoration s'accommode difficilement des explications plus conjoncturelles et structurelles qui permettent d'interpréter l'événement dans sa cohérence, avec les contradictions inhérentes au jeu d'échelle géographique et temporel. Que s'est-il donc réellement passe le 30 juin 1956 ? Date symbolique de l'histoire récente du Congo, l'événement a été vécu et interprété de manière très différente. Une réappropriation univoque dans le cadre de la commémoration des cinquante ans ne témoigne pas de cette diversité. II convient dès lors de contextualiser ce « réveil », cette « première manifestation publique » d'une conscience d'appartenir à un groupe social distinct par l'analyse du contexte immédiat et de l'héritage, réel ou suppose, attribué à Conscience africaine.

    HLA-G-mediated Immune Tolerance: Past and New Outlooks (2021)

    Description: The non-classical HLA class I molecule HLA-G is different from classical HLA class I molecules because of the low polymorphism in the coding region, the fact that HLA-G primary transcript is alternatively spliced in seven isoforms, and the inhibitory action on immune cells. Although HLA-G is low polymorphic, variants in both promoter and 3’ un-translated region (UTR) of HLA-G locus regulate its expression. In healthy conditions, a basal level of HLA-G gene transcription is observed in most cells and tissues; however, translation into HLA-G protein is restricted to trophoblasts in the placenta, where it participates in promoting tolerance at the fetal-maternal interface. HLA-G is also expressed by thymic epitelial, cornea, mesenchymal stem cells, nail matrix, pancreatic beta cells, erythroid, and endothelial precursors. HLA-G can be neo-expressed in adult tissues in pathological conditions, and its expression has been documented autoimmune disorders, viral infections, and cancer. In the latter setting de novo HLA-G expression is associated with the capability of tumor cells to evade the immune control. In the last decade it has become evident that HLA-G expression on T cells and antigenpresenting cells confers to these cells tolerogenic properties. This Research Topic focused on i) summarizing updated clinical and immunological evidences that HLA-G expression is associate with beneficial or detrimental tolerance, ii) gathering new insights into the mechanisms governing the expression of HLA-G in healthy and pathological conditions, such as pre-eclampsia, and iii) examining the mechanisms underlying HLA-G mediated tolerance.

    Description: La guerre de Dix Ans est l’épisode franc-comtois de la guerre de Trente Ans (1618-1648). En lutte contre l’Espagne, le royaume de France envahit la Franche-Comté (ou comté de Bourgogne) en 1636 et tente, sinon de la conquérir, au moins d’empêcher qu’elle serve de place d’armes aux Habsbourg. La guerre de Dix Ans est donc une succession de campagnes et d’opérations militaires à l’image du célèbre siège de Dole, mais aussi une décennie de misères, de souffrances, de destructions. Cet ouvrage est le résumé d’une thèse de doctorat soutenue en 1995 à l’université de Franche-Comté, fruit de dix années de recherches effectuées tant dans les dépôts d’archives de la région que sur le terrain. L’auteur replace la guerre de Dix Ans dans son contexte européen, fait le point des connaissances sur le sujet et traite des questions sociales et économiques. Il apporte en somme un éclairage nouveau sur cette tragique période de l’histoire comtoise et remet en cause bon nombre d’idées reçues.

L'auteur concentre son attention sur la paroisse, les rapports de production et de propriété, le pouvoir religieux et laïque, et l'évolution démographique de cette population de langue française. L'ouvrage utilise de nombreux documents, pour la plupart inédits, tels que les titres de propriété du Bureau d'enregistrement des titres du district du Sudbury, les données des rôles d'évaluation, les registres des deux paroisses de langue française, les procès-verbaux des réunions des conseils municipaux et des « Timber Books » du district de Sudbury. Des histoires de vie de pionniers et pionnières de la communauté révèlent comment ces gens ont perçu et vécu cette période de transition.

    Description: Le Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque nationale de France compte parmi ses trésors la plus importante collection de pierres gravées au monde (près de dix mille). Nombre d’entre elles, d’une qualité exceptionnelle, gravées pour des princes durant l’Antiquité, nous ont été transmises par les rois de France qui les firent orner de montures d’or décorées de pierres précieuses et d’émaux. C’est la plus éminente spécialiste de la glyptique antique, Marie-Louise Vollenweider, qui inaugure l’étude des pierres grecques et romaines avec le catalogue raisonné des portraits antiques, résultat de trente années de travail. Pour ce premier tome, consacré à la naissance du portrait et à son développement à l’époque hellénistique - qui sera suivi d’un second sur les portraits romains -, 283 camées et intailles ont été sélectionnés. D’une conception résolument nouvelle, ce catalogue ne se contente pas d’établir un classement des oeuvres, selon le style d’une époque et la manière d’un graveur, mais cherche à comprendre l’esprit du temps, le talent des graveurs et la psychologie des personnages représentés. Ceux-ci, restés jusqu’ici anonymes, ont retrouvé leur identité de princes et de princesses hellénistiques – ptolémaïques, séleucides, pontiques, cappadociens –, d’artisans ou de philosophes, mais aussi une vie nouvelle. Car pour Marie-Louise Vollenweider, le visage parle et elle en comprend parfaitement le langage. Notons aussi certaines attributions inédites à des artistes, dont la plus novatrice est celle d’un camée d’Alexandre le Grand au plus célèbre graveur de l’Antiquité, Pyrgotélès, connu par le témoignage de Pline l’Ancien, mais dont aucune œuvre n’avait été jusqu’à présent identifiée. Ce serait là le seul portrait du grand souverain réalisé de son vivant.

    Description: La société médiévale est née à l'époque carolingienne... Durant cette période charnière, un lent mouvement de fond a conduit au gouvernement par conseil des grands et au développement des liens de fidélité, à la conjugalisation du modèle familial et au renforcement des liens verticaux et hiérarchiques à l’intérieur des groupements de parenté aristocratiques. La famille carolingienne et les familles royales qui lui ont succédé sont issues de l’aristocratie franque qui apparaît au fil de l’étude comme l’observatoire privilégié de toutes les transformations sociales. Famille large-famille étroite, parenté cognatique-parenté agnatique ? L’auteur dépasse ces débats traditionnels en mettant en relation les fondements sociaux et culturels du pouvoir avec les mécanismes de la filiation, de l’alliance et de la résidence. Fondamentalement cognatique mais de plus en plus fermement centré sur le couple conjugal, le système de parenté a évolué au rythme des transformations sociales et politiques, tout en participant lui-même à la dynamique du changement social. Le présent ouvrage met en lumière mutations et permanences. La montée des Carolingiens et le système politique qu’ils mettent en place aux VIIIe et XIe siècles tirent parti de la hiérarchisation de l’aristocratie et l’accélèrent. Sous le contrôle du roi et de l’Église, l’équilibre social et politique repose désormais sur des groupements que structurent l’alliance, l’amitié et la fidélité. La rupture de l’ordre carolingien et la promotion de la militia à la fin du IXe siècle, l’apparition de lignages organisés autour d’un honor transmis en ligne directe, la nouvelle définition du rôle de la femme et de la parenté agnatique au Xe siècle n’y changent rien : l’alliance et la fidélité restent les fondements des équilibres locaux.

    Description: On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, and the disease now affects nearly every country and region. Nearly 18 months later, COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, continues to present significant challenges to health systems, public health, and the economy of countries across both hemispheres. The morbidity and mortality of the infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been significant, and various waves of disease outbreaks initially overwhelmed hospitals and clinics in many countries and continue to do so. This influences everyone, and public health countermeasures have been dramatic in terms of their impact on employment, social systems, and mental health. This Special Issue collection follows on from the Special Issue “COVID-19: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives” and provides an avenue for authors from various disciplines to provide feedback on the response to and our future global preparedness for COVID-19, as well as to disseminate critical information about SARS-CoV-2 and the associated COVID-19 pandemic.

    Description: Nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) is one of the most important techniques for determining the quality and safety of materials, components, devices, and structures. NDT&E technologies include ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), magnetic flux leakage testing (MFLT), eddy current testing (ECT), radiation testing (RT), penetrant testing (PT), and visual testing (VT), and these are widely used throughout the modern industry. However, some NDT processes, such as those for cleaning specimens and removing paint, cause environmental pollution and must only be considered in limited environments (time, space, and sensor selection). Thus, NDT&E is classified as a typical 3D (dirty, dangerous, and difficult) job. In addition, NDT operators judge the presence of damage based on experience and subjective judgment, so in some cases, a flaw may not be detected during the test. Therefore, to obtain clearer test results, a means for the operator to determine flaws more easily should be provided. In addition, the test results should be organized systemically in order to identify the cause of the abnormality in the test specimen and to identify the progress of the damage quantitatively.

    Description: Regions and regionalism have been staples of historical analysis for the Greek world for a very long time. What is meant by a region, however, is not always obvious. The contributions in this volume seek to address the question of defining regions and working out the implications of regionalism along different dimensions of analysis for Asia Minor in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Looking at culture, coinage, political institutions, the papers explore different markers of regional identity, consider ways in which these identities may remain stable or change over time, review the character of the interaction between regional entities and hegemonic powers, and challenge the usefulness in some cases of regional analysis. Questions of ethnicity are also addressed. This volume will be of interest to historians working in Asia Minor and also to anyone concerned with the conceptual questions around regions and regionalism in the Mediterranean world.

    Description: In this work, a novel measurement system for the analysis of the gyrotron RF output spectrum was developed. It enables unprecedented time dependent measurements within a large bandwidth, dynamic range and unambiguous RF indication in the entire D-Band (110-170 GHz). Special attention was given to the investigation of parasitic RF oscillations, and the analysis of the interplay of thermal cavity expansion and ionization-based space charge neutralization at the start of long RF pulses.

    Description: Les monarchies hellénistiques, en raison de leur puissance financière et militaire, furent les protagonistes majeurs de la diplomatie et des conflits armés en Orient depuis la fin du IVe siècle av. J.-C. jusqu'à l'arrivée de Rome sur la scène régionale aux IIe/Ier siècles av. J.-C. En furent-elles les seuls acteurs ? L'idée a longtemps prévalu, dans l'historiographie contemporaine, d'un abaissement politique irrémédiable des cités grecques à cette époque, face à l'émergence des nouvelles puissances royales, seules désormais capables de déclencher les conflits, d'en supporter les coûts et d'en recueillir les fruits. A contrario, les cités, vidées de leur substance, incapables de décider de leur propre destin, auraient confié ce soin à des monarques désireux de faire d'elles les pions de leur diplomatie. La journée d'études organisée à Lyon le 10 octobre 2003 à la Maison de l'Orient méditerranéen s'est proposé d'attirer l'attention sur un certain nombre d'aspects qui touchent au rapport entre les cités et le phénomène général de la guerre. Pour cette étude, le cadre choisi a été celui de l'Asie mineure, parce qu'il offrait une cohérence géographique suffisamment forte et des exemples qui illustraient abondamment la perspective que nous voulions explorer. Les sept contributions, qui constituent ce volume, en analysant sous différents aspects la capacité des communautés civiques à penser les problèmes de la guerre et à se donner une organisation interne, qui leur permettrait de gérer les nombreuses épreuves de la période, suggèrent la permanence très vivante, en leur sein, d'une culture militaire, qu'elle fût la manifestation d'un conservatisme culturel ou celle d'une volonté farouche de défendre les intérêts communautaires.

    Description: Si « l’hérédité en République » peut sembler un paradoxe, pratiques népotiques, cousinages complexes, ancrage local, réseaux de sociabilité au sein de la bourgeoisie conduisent à la confiscation du destin politique de la Marne par quelques familles entre 1871 et 1940. Malgré le vœu de Gambetta de voir émerger des couches sociales nouvelles en politique, des groupes familiaux alliés mettent la main sur les mandats de conseiller d’arrondissement, conseiller général, député et sénateur. Ces élus limitent le renouvellement des élites politiques nationales et locales. Appartenant à des familles qui s’embourgeoisent progressivement au cours du siècle, ces notables procèdent de stratégies matrimoniales définies. Tours maîtresses ou corps de logis des châteaux, manoirs ou simples maisons des champs, ces demeures aristocratiques rurales bénéficient, dans les dernières décennies du Moyen Âge, d'une adaptation aux fonctions qui sont les leurs. Le château est enfin le lieu d'un riche décor, qui concerne aussi bien les murs (faux appareils, plafonds décorés, peintures historiées, tentures et tapisseries, lambris) que les sols (pavements) et qui participe de la distinction des espaces, de la hiérarchie des accès comme du statut du propriétaire.     Description: Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders and is characterized by recurrent seizures resulting from abnormal neuronal excitability in the central nervous system. Despite the availability of thirty-six antiseizure medications, about one-third of patients with epilepsy do not respond to the pharmacological treatment and develop a so-called “pharmaco-resistant epilepsy” or “refractory epilepsy.” Thus, there is an urgent need to develop novel, effective therapies based on novel mechanisms underlying neuronal excitability that leads to seizures. This reprint’s original research papers and review articles highlight unknown mechanisms underlying pharmaco-resistant resistant epilepsy, epileptogenesis, and seizure suppression.

    Cross Talk between Lymph Node Lymphatic Endothelial Cells and T Cells in Inflammation and Cancer (2021)

    Description: Lymphocytes constantly survey the lymph nodes in search for potential infection by a pathogen. They enter the afferent lymphatic vessel that serves as a conduit to transport the motile lymphocytes to the draining lymph node. Lymphatic vessels (LVs) are present in most vascularized tissues. They are traditionally regarded as passive conduits for soluble antigens and leukocytes. Afferent LVs begin as blind ended capillaries, which give rise to collecting vessels that merge and connect with draining lymph nodes (dLNs). Initial lymphatic capillaries are composed of Lymphatic Endothelial Cells (LECs) connected by discontinuous cell junctions, which join to form larger collecting lymphatic vessels, and ultimately feed into the LN subcapsular sinus. Within the LN, LECs are localized to the subcapsular, cortical, and medullary sinuses, where they interact with incoming and exiting leukocytes. LECs, and in general LN stromal cells, have emerged in the recent years as active players in the immune response. In support to this,studies have shown that the immune response generated during inflammation and under pathologic conditions is accompanied by modeling of the LVs and generation of new lymphatics, a process known as lymphangiogenesis. These facts strongly suggest that LECs and stromal LN cells in general, are not inert players but rather are part of the immune response by organizing immune cells movement, exchanging information and supplying survival factors. The purpose of this research topic is to review the role of the LECs during immune homeostasis and cancer. Considering the critical role of lymphangiogenesis in many pathologies like chronic and acute inflammation, autoimmunity, wound healing, graft rejection, and tumor metastasis, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms that govern the cross talks between the LECs and immune cells during homeostasis and inflammation.

    Description: Il y a deux cents ans, le décret impérial du 17 mars 1808, en 144 articles, organisait l’Université impériale fondée en 1806. Restaurant les facultés, précisant les grades mais aussi la hiérarchie interne du personnel administratif et enseignant, cet imposant décret jetait les bases de notre système contemporain d’Instruction publique. C’est aussi par ce décret qu’apparaît le recteur d’académie, défini comme le représentant direct du Grand-Maître parisien, chef d’un espace territorial nouveau, l’académie, composée d’un regroupement de plusieurs départements pour la gestion des affaires éducatives. Parfois menacée de suppression, souvent modifiée dans ses attributions règlementaires, la fonction rectorale a surmonté les multiples changements de régime qu’a connus la France depuis 1808, s’affirmant comme une spécificité française. Cet ouvrage revient sur les deux cents ans d’engagements polymorphes des recteurs d’académie au service du développement de l’Instruction publique. Il associe de larges synthèses sur la naissance de la fonction et les principales phases de son évolution, les analyses plus spécifiques sur certains de leurs engagements, tout en proposant des études de cas académiques ou biographiques. Ces contributions permettent ainsi de mieux connaître les recteurs et leur fonction mais aussi de réaliser, par leur intermédiaire, une véritable plongée dans l’histoire de nos structures éducatives contemporaines.

    Description: De la Hollande aux Fens anglais, du Schleswig-Holstein à la plaine padane, l’Europe moderne a été marquée par la conquête des marais littoraux et intérieurs. Bien qu’elle n’ait pas souffert de faim de terres, la France a également participé à cette modernisation agricole modifiant les rapports entre l’homme et la nature. Par le prisme de l’histoire de neuf marais asséchés en France au cours du XVIIe, cet ouvrage, fondé sur l’exploitation d’archives nombreuses, françaises et néerlandaises, met en lumière le rôle de la monarchie et de son aristocratie ministérielle dans la conduite de ce processus. Grâce à des dispositifs juridiques et des méthodes de gestion novateurs, mais aussi par un soutien politique constant, la monarchie a permis la mise en culture d’espaces traditionnellement consacrés à la pêche, à la chasse ou à la cueillette. Richelieu et ses créatures, puis Mazarin et ses associés ont ainsi procédé à l’importation d’un modèle hydraulique et agricole d’inspiration néerlandaise, ancré dans l’économie européenne et aux conséquences sociales et environnementales encore marquantes de nos jours. Les bonifications françaises du XVIIe siècle montrent l’importance des liens entre les élites politiques françaises et les élites commerçantes néerlandaises. Ainsi, l’histoire des assèchements offre un regard original sur l’histoire politique du XVIIe siècle français, révélant les enjeux territoriaux de la centralisation monarchique et du développement de l’État.

Penser le contemporain à travers le Moyen Âge, c’est à une réflexion d’ampleur sur le phénomène du médiévalisme que Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri nous convie. Frère siamois de l’histoire médiévale, né comme elle du romantisme et de l’ère des nationalismes au xixe siècle, le médiévalisme, que l’on pourrait définir comme la projection dans le présent d’un ou plusieurs Moyen Âges idéalisés, a subi une éclipse toute relative dans l’après-guerre avant de revenir hanter les consciences européennes avec toujours plus de force depuis la chute de l’Union soviétique. Que veut dire la floraison des références au Moyen Âge, depuis les milliers de fêtes médiévales qui parcourent l’Europe jusqu’aux utilisations politiques de tout genre, en passant par l’invention de cultures néo-médiévales qui envahissent aujourd’hui bibliothèques, cinémas et ordinateurs ? Quel rapport ce médiévalisme entretient-il avec l’histoire scientifique médiévale ? Quels sont les liens entre cette invocation permanente, qui tient tantôt du mythe, tantôt de la boîte à outils conceptuelle, et les redéfinitions en cours de la société européenne et occidentale ? C’est cet ensemble de questions, et bien d’autres qu’interroge cet essai qui plonge dans l’histoire du xixe et du xxe siècle pour éclairer le présent et le futur du médiévalisme.

    Description: Today, the flow of electricity is bidirectional, and not all electricity is centrally produced in large power plants. With the growing emergence of prosumers and microgrids, the amount of electricity produced by sources other than large, traditional power plants is ever-increasing. These alternative sources include photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), geothermal, and biomass renewable generation plants. Some renewable energy resources (solar PV and wind turbine generation) are highly dependent on natural processes and parameters (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, solar irradiation, humidity, etc.). Thus, the outputs are so stochastic in nature. New data-science-inspired real-time solutions are needed in order to co-develop digital twins of large intermittent renewable plants whose services can be globally delivered.

Objet de l'économie de marché, le colis s'adapte aux attentes des donateurs, aux conditions logistiques et aux besoins des destinataires. Bref, le colis facilite la cristallisation d'une communauté de donateurs et d'un espace d'intervention humanitaire construit par l'engagement des organisations non gouvernementales, des organisations internationales et des États en guerre.

    Bilbao et ses marchands au xvie (2021)

    Description: Au xvie siècle, les Bilbanais contrôlent une économie puissante dont les différents secteurs sont interactifs (construction navale, industrie du fer, commerce, pêche, transport). Cette économie commerciale est également guerrière, car les Biscayens fournissent au roi des navires et des armes pour le besoin des conflits. Ces secteurs d’activités à double utilité, intimement liés entre eux, constituent un des atouts majeurs du port de Bilbao. D’ailleurs, tandis que la bibliographie tendait à faire de Séville le centre économique de la vie espagnole et européenne dans la première moitié du xvie siècle, il s’avère que les échanges de Bilbao avec le reste de l’Europe équivalent à ceux de la métropole andalouse avec l’Amérique jusqu’aux années 1560-1570. L’influence de la découverte du Nouveau Continent sur la structure du commerce espagnol et européen s’avère donc progressive et assez tardive, ce qui nous amène à reconsidérer les modèles établis par Pierre Chaunu et Immanuel Wallerstein. L’importance du réseau de commerce et de pouvoir que contrôlent les Bilbanais au xvie siècle explique en partie les performances du port de Bilbao. Aux côtés des gens d’affaires de Burgos avec lesquels ils coopèrent, ils constituent l’un des ferments de maturité du milieu marchand européen. Même si ces deux groupes marchands sont liés, le succès des entrepreneurs bilbanais survit à la baisse de régime de l’économie castillane. Dans les dernières décennies du xvie siècle, en raison des guerres dans le nord-ouest européen qui entravent notablement le commerce, ils reconvertissent leurs investissements dans l’achat de marchandises locales et castillanes, dans le commerce avec la Péninsule Ibérique et le Nouveau Monde, et dans de nombreux placements financiers. Mais il y a plus, car à cette époque plus d’un navire de guerre sur deux est construit en Pays Basque. Grâce aux commandes royales, les chantiers navals biscayens et les fabriques d’armes tournent à plein régime, au moins jusqu’au début du xviie siècle, compensant en partie les manques à gagner dans le domaine commercial. Cette faculté particulière de reconversion des activités renvoie aux réseaux sociaux de nos marchands et à leur activité de financiers. A cet égard, les Bilbanais organisent des stratégies de manipulation vis-à-vis de leurs homologues castillans, de la haute noblesse et du monarque, et constituent un groupe de pression avec lequel l’État castillan doit transiger.

Cette habitude a son histoire. Depuis les mazarinades et la Révolution française, elle accompagne l'irruption de la foule dans la vie de la cité. Au 19e siècle elle prend cependant une nouvelle ampleur. Sous l'influence de Béranger et de ses nombreux imitateurs, les chansons commentant l'actualité deviennent de plus en plus nombreuses et circulent de plus en plus facilement. Les développements de l'imprimé, des sociabilités, des populations migrantes expliquent ces évolutions. La parole chansonnière, perçue comme une « voix du peuple », devient alors un enjeu politique de première importance. Comment se forme cette culture qui ne tarde pas à revendiquer une certaine autonomie ? Que dit-elle ? Comment se diffuse-t-elle ? Comment les autorités et les élites peuvent-elles essayer de la domestiquer ? Ce livre propose une réflexion sur toutes ces questions. Il permet ainsi de participer au débat sur la politisation des populations dans la France pré-démocratique.

    Description: The gas phase direct hydroxylation of benzene into phenol with hydrogen and oxygen, as initially described by Niwa in 2002, was realized in a newly developed double-membrane reactor. In the concept described by Niwa, a dense Pd membrane is used for the (safe) dosage of dissociated hydrogen species into the tubular reaction zone, where it reacts with gas phase oxygen to form surface species capable of directly converting benzene into phenol in a single-step process.

In recent years, nano-drug delivery systems have been extensively investigated and applied as alternatives to conventional cancer treatments. Cancer nanomedicines aim to achieve the targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the tumor site, utilizing strategies such as passive targeting, active targeting and stimuli-triggered drug release, while simultaneously decreasing drug accumulation in normal tissues, which together lead to improved therapeutic efficacy and reduced side effects. Currently, several cancer nanomedicines are in regular use, and several others are in various stages of development.This Special Issue will highlight recent progress in the development of novel nanomedicines and targeted drug delivery systems for cancer therapy.

    Description: It is long known that many cells can shed extracellular vesicles, small membrane-enclosed cell fragments. Although the existence of extracellular vesicles has been recognized for many years, researchers are only beginning to understand their physiologic significance. Several recent studies have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles released from cells serve as a mode of cellular communication. They can carry diverse molecular payload (e.g. nucleic acids, bioactive lipids and proteins) to distal organs and recipient cells. Extracellular vesicles can be classified into three major groups: exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies. All these types of extracellular vesicles can be found in a variety of biologic specimen and their numbers, distribution and composition may serve as biomarkers for various disorders, including cardiovascular disease. Although extracellular vesicle-mediated processes are currently best characterized in the fields of cancer biology and neurobiology, evidence is accumulating that extracellular vesicles play a key role in the pathophysiology of diabetes, thrombosis, inflammation and cardiovascular calcification. In this Research Topic, we invited review and methodological articles that advance our understanding of extracellular vesicle-related processes in vascular biology.

    How to improve immune reconstitution in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation? (2021)

    Description: Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is widely used in the treatment of haematological malignancies as a form of immunotherapy acting through a graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) reaction. This curative allogeneic response can be associated with severe drawbacks, such as frequent and severe graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and a long-lasting immunodeficiency, especially now with the development of innovative strategies such as umbilical cord blood transplantation or transplants from haplo-identical family donors (Haplo-HSCT). In the long-term follow-up of these patients, severe post-transplant infections, relapse or secondary malignancies may be directly related to persistent immune defects.Reconstitution of the different lymphocyte populations (B, T, NK, NKT) and antigen presenting cells of myeloid origin (monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells) should be considered not only quantitatively but especially qualitatively, in terms of functional subsets. Immune deficiency leading to an increased susceptibility to infections lasts for more than a year. Although infections that occur in the first month mostly result from a deficiency in both granulocytes and mononuclear cells (MNC), later post-engraftment infections are due to a deficiency in MNC subsets, primarily CD4 T-cells and B-cells. T-cell reconstitution has been extensively studied because of the central role of T-cells in mediating both GvHD, evidenced by the reduced incidence of this complication following T-Cell depletion, and a GvL effect as shown by DLI. In the recent years there has been renewed interest in the role of NK-cells, especially in the context of Haplo-HSCT, and in B-cell reconstitution.This Frontiers Research Topic will provide state of the art knowledge of the mechanisms of immune reconstitution in an allogeneic environment, in order to improve monitoring and therapeutic intervention in allo-HSCT patients.

    Description: Dans les sociétés d’Ancien Régime, la pierre et la terre furent longtemps la principale source de richesses et un élément constitutif des patrimoines. Dès lors, les propriétés immobilières et foncières deviennent un puissant vecteur de rencontres et d’échanges entre les différentes catégories sociales, citadines et rurales. Dans les villes où la majorité de la population vit en location, la maison n’a pas attiré de grands rassembleurs de pierre. Sur le marché immobilier, les bourgeois et les artisans sont les plus actifs, mais toutes les catégories sociales sont en concurrence pour des habitations de valeur médiocre ou faible. En considérant la ville dans son environnement rural, l’influence citadine est claire. Autour de Lille ou de Cambrai, les propriétés citadines modèlent le visage des campagnes. Pourtant, les citadins, principalement issus de la bourgeoisie, s’engagent timidement dans le jeu foncier. Encore la participation citadine est-elle scandée par des convulsions chronologiques qui achèvent de relativiser l’idée de la « conquête bourgeoise du sol ». Sur le marché foncier, les gens de campagne réalisent donc l’essentiel de l’activité. Opérant entre eux, les ruraux multiplient les interventions de petite valeur sur un espace relationnel étroit. Pourtant, tous ne sont pas en action : l’instabilité des patrimoines des journaliers renforce surtout la position des laboureurs et des fermiers. À travers l’analyse des marchés fonciers et immobiliers, cet ouvrage s’attache donc à comprendre les stratégies et les dynamiques des différentes catégories sociales de la Ville et de la Campagne.

Faut-il admettre que les « récidivistes » désignent historiquement un même groupe homogène et véhiculent les mêmes impensés, les mêmes peurs, les mêmes fantasmes depuis plus de deux siècles ? Ou faut-il poser comme point de départ à toute tentative de compréhension des objets « récidive » et « récidivistes » que ce sont des catégories juridiques historiquement situées, des construits politiques qui se sont imposés par la force du droit et qui ont perduré au prix de changements de sens masqués par l’apparente neutralité de la qualification juridique. Tentant d’ouvrir cette seconde voie, cet ouvrage se propose de redonner aux « récidivistes » une dimension historique, d’analyser la consolidation de cette catégorie au XIXe siècle et les raisons et les effets de sa permanence, dont on mesure aujourd’hui encore toute l’actualité.     Description: On sait que la Troisième République a assuré renseignement primaire élémentaire pour tous et créé l’enseignement secondaire des jeunes filles. On sait moins qu’à partir de 1880 la France s’est progressivement couverte d’écoles primaires supérieures et de cours complémentaires offrant aux filles et aux garçons des études prolongées au-delà du certificat d’études. Ces « collèges du peuple », pour reprendre une expression d’époque, allaient permettre à des enfants issus de milieux modestes d’accéder à des emplois d’encadrement moyen. Le présent ouvrage étudie cette zone obscure dans le passé de l’institution scolaire. Rompant avec l’explication habituelle de la croissance de la scolarisation en termes de « demande sociale », il montre la contribution de l’institution scolaire à son propre développement : ainsi le succès de renseignement primaire supérieur tient à la fois à ses relations organiques avec renseignement primaire élémentaire et à sa souplesse d’adaptation à des populations aux intérêts variés. Autre découverte : à certaines périodes, les collectivités locales ont été des acteurs décisifs du développement de la scolarisation. Une dernière partie examine les relations entre les débats sur « l’école unique », apparus dès 1900, et les évolutions institutionnelles qui ont abouti à l’unification partielle des filières d’enseignement prolongé. La conclusion propose un schéma d’ensemble pour analyser l’école, qui renouvelle les interrogations sur l’école développées par les sciences sociales depuis trente ans.

    Description: Ubi papa, ibi Roma : Rome peut bien n'être pas dans Rome puisque Rome est là où réside le pape. Cet adage du xiiie siècle exprime avec force le rapport d'identification entre la ville et le souverain, définissant la capitale par sa fonction de commandement politique. Mais elle s'applique à une capitale étrange au Moyen Âge, qui se rêvait caput mundi mais peinait à s'affirmer comme capitale régionale. Qu'est-ce donc qu'une ville capitale au Moyen Âge ? Au-delà des fausses évidences de la continuité millénaire de la centralisation parisienne et, dans une moindre mesure, londonienne, la question est bien plus complexe qu'il n'y paraît. Certes, le modèle romain de la capitale d'empire a pu se prolonger sous des formes diverses, avec Constantinople, Bagdad ou Le Caire. Mais lorsque les Carolingiens rétablissent l'empire en 800, ils ne retrouvent pas pour autant ce modèle de la capitale d'empire. Si l'on considère l'ensemble des expériences institutionnelles et territoriales de l'Occident médiéval, c'est bien la dispersion des fonctions capitales qui constitue la règle et leur concentration l'exception. En se tenant à Istanbul, à l'invitation de l'Institut français d'études anatoliennes, le xxxvie Congrès de la Société des historiens médiévistes de l'Enseignement supérieur public trouvait un cadre monumental et historique parfaitement adéquat à son objet d'étude, à mi-chemin entre plusieurs expériences politiques que les différentes contributions ici rassemblées entendent confronter, en longue durée. Car faire l'histoire des villes capitales revient à poser la question de la diversité des modèles d'émergence de l'État : les rapports entre le palais et la ville, mais aussi les phénomènes de déplacement du centre de gravité des constructions territoriales, d'abandon ou de reprise de capitales, dessinent plusieurs configurations de pouvoir. Essentielle est, de ce point de vue, la question des marqueurs symboliques : une ville réussit à convaincre qu'elle capitalise différentes fonctions de commandement par des images et des rituels, des mots et des murs, la mobilisation d'une mémoire et la monumentalisation de leurs lieux. Elle peut continuer à jouer longtemps du prestige d'une capitalité évanouie. En saisissant l'impact à la fois matériel et idéel de la centralisation administrative dans la société urbaine, les différentes contributions de ce volume tentent donc de donner tout son sens à cette expression faussement anodine de « ville capitale » au Moyen Âge.

Ces textes et les tableaux concernent des aspects variés de la vie quotidienne : les prénoms donnés aux nouveaux-nés, la natalité, la nuptialité, l’âge au moment du mariage, le veuvage, la fréquence des remariages, le nombre d’enfants par famille, les métiers, la mortalité, les épidémies, la vie paroissiale, les événements, les aléas climatiques, etc. Le lecteur dispose ici d’un corpus considérable, depuis la fin du Moyen Âge jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine, formant une source exceptionnelle mise en valeur par des exemples d’exploitation de documents qui dévoilent les destins des individus et les histoires des familles.

    Description: C'est dans un large cadre géographique que s'inscrit le travail d'Yves Lequin : Lyon et sa mouvance directe mais aussi le bassin de la Loire, le Dauphiné, la Savoie, le Bugey, le Vivarais, les montagnes du Roannais et du Beaujolais ; il évite ainsi à la fois l'étroitesse de la monographie et les faux-semblants du cadre national confondu avec les appareils parisiens. Livre d'histoire sociale de la classe ouvrière, il éclaire la vie et l'action de ses organisations par les modalités de l'industrialisation, par les évolutions de la vie matérielle et culturelle, par la sociologie des groupes où elles s'insèrent. L'image qui en sort rompt avec l'idée habituelle d'une évolution linéaire. Yves Lequin oppose fortement deux périodes séparées, grossièrement par la grande dépression des années 1880-1890 qui coïncide avec une profonde mutation de toute l'économie régionale. Jusque-là, l'industrialisation n'a pas été rupture mais développement parti de loin ; aussi les groupes ouvriers renforcent-ils leur cohésion en augmentant leur nombre, même si la médiocrité des conditions de travail et de vie correspond bien aux descriptions du temps ; autour du métier naissent des mouvements collectifs et une prise de conscience très précoces d'où sortent des organisations professionnelles d'une puissance insoupçonnée et qui atteignent leur apogée à la veille des années 1880. C'est après 1890, la reconversion totale de l'industrie régionale qui brise leur base militante ; la Belle Époque est un temps d'inquiétudes et d'incertitudes malgré l'amélioration du niveau de vie ; avec la disparition du « métier » liée à une déqualification générale du travail, disparaît ou s'affaiblit l'identité collective. C'est en fait une nouvelle classe ouvrière qui est en train de naître, encore incertaine d'elle-même et souvent prisonnière de conduites revendicatives ou politiques héritées du XIXe siècle, inadaptées au siècle qui naît.

    Description: Située à la frontière du nord du Vietnam et dotée d’un relief accidenté, la province de Cao Bằng, pays des Tày, a longtemps été considérée comme une zone reculée, barbare, insalubre et potentiellement dangereuse pour les Kinh venus du delta. Pour bien administrer cette zone frontalière, le souverain dût accepter les privilèges des chefs autochtones en maintenant ses propres prérogatives comme les éléments symboliques. Mais, à partir de 1820, en visant à intégrer cette région au système administratif officiel du pays, l’empereur Minh Mạng (1820‑1840) a réalisé une politique pour éliminer le pouvoir des gardiens de frontière. Cette réforme est considérée comme la première offensive, et d’ailleurs la plus violente, du pouvoir central à l’encontre des chefs autochtones en zone montagneuse. Cette monographie met en lumière la relation entre la monarchie et les pouvoirs locaux de Cao Bằng des origines aux conséquences de la réforme de Minh Mạng, y compris la rivalité politique entre des chefs locaux sur le plan local. Cette étude rétrospective offre un nouveau regard sur le processus d’intégration des marches frontières du nord du Vietnam et sur les difficultés rencontrées par la cour de Hué dans sa gestion des régions frontalières.

La question allemande est ainsi devenue le conflit majeur de la guerre froide. Ce livre insiste aussi sur le rôle des forces vives et les problèmes sociaux et il met l'accent sur la politique française d'occupation.

    Recent advances in γδ T cell biology: New ligands, new functions, and new translational perspectives (2021)

    Description: Gamma/delta (γδ) T-cells are a small subset of T-lymphocytes in the peripheral circulation but constitute a major T-cell population at other anatomical localizations such as the epithelial tissues. In contrast to conventional a/ß T-cells, the available number of germline genes coding for T-cell receptor (TCR) variable elements of γδ T-cells is very small. Moreover, there is a prefential localization of γδ T-cells expressing given Vgamma and Vdelta genes in certain tissues. In humans, γδ T-cells expressing the Vg9Vd2-encoded TCR account for anywhere between 50 and 〉95% of peripheral blood γδ T-cells, whereas cells expressing non-Vd2 genes dominate in mucosal tissues. In mice, there is an ordered appearance of γδ T-cell „waves“ during embryonic development, resulting in preferential localization of γδ T-cells expressing distinct VgammaVdelta genes in the skin, the reproductive organs, or gut epithelia. The major function of γδ T-cells resides in local immunosurveillance and immune defense against infection and malignancy. This is supported by the identification of ligands that are selectively recognized by the γδ TCR. As an example, human Vgamma9Vdelta2 T-cells recognize phosphorylated metabolites („phosphoantigens“) that are secreted by many pathogens but can also be overproduced by tumor cells, providing a basis for a role of these γδ T-cells in both anti-infective and anti-tumor immunity. Similarly, the recognition of endothelial protein C receptor by human non-Vdelta2 γδ T-cells has recently been identified to provide a link for the role for such γδ T-cells in immunity against epithelial tumor cells and cytomegalovirus-infected endothelial cells. In addition to „classical“ functions such as cytokine production and cytotoxicity, recent studies suggest that subsets of γδ T-cells can exert additional functions such as regulatory activity and – quite surpisingly – „professional“ antigen-presenting capacity. It is currently not well known how this tremendous extent of functional plasticity is regulated and what is the extent of γδ TCR ligand diversity. Due to their non-MHC-restricted recognition of unusual stress-associated ligands, γδ T-cells have raised great interest as to their potential translational application in cell-based immunotherapy. Topics of this Research Focus include: Molecular insights into the activation and differentiation requirements of γδ T-cells, role of pyrophosphates and butyrophilin molecules for the activation of human γδ T-cells, role of γδ T-cells in tumor immunity and in other infectious and non-infectious diseases, and many others.     Description: Création napoléonienne, le recteur d’académie occupe une place originale dans les institutions de la France depuis deux siècles. Fonctionnaire, représentant du ministère, le recteur est, à l’instar du préfet, d’abord perçu comme un agent du centralisme étatique ; particulièrement dans l’académie de Toulouse, la plus éloignée de Paris. Universitaire, le recteur n’est pourtant pas un haut fonctionnaire comme un autre. Son autorité, surtout dans une région qui compte une des plus anciennes universités d’Europe et la seconde population étudiante du pays, n’est pas simplement administrative, elle est aussi intellectuelle ; ce qui lui vaut le titre de « chancelier des universités ». Considéré comme un « pair » par ses collègues, il incarne la garantie des franchises universitaires, l’indépendance de la recherche et, à tous les niveaux du système éducatif, la liberté pédagogique des enseignants. Explorant deux siècles d’existence de l’institution rectorale et académique, les contributions réunies à l’issue du colloque « Les recteurs et le rectorat de l’académie de Toulouse ( 1808-2008) », illustrent la permanence de ces deux caractères de la fonction de recteur. Permanence… Mais aussi évolution, selon les différents régimes que la France a traversés depuis le Premier Empire, selon la personnalité des hommes (et de la seule femme) qui ont occupé le poste, selon la nature des problèmes à traiter et des défis à relever... Ce colloque pluridisciplinaire - qui réunit historiens, historiens du droit et sociologues, en confrontant le résultat de leurs recherches aux témoignages des sept derniers recteurs de l’académie de Toulouse - fait émerger une troisième particularité : son rôle de médiateur entre les intérêts locaux et les instances nationales. Chargé d’appliquer la politique du ministère « sur le terrain ». le recteur se trouve confronté aux attentes des populations, aux demandes des élus, aux inquiétudes des enseignants... Faire « remonter » à Paris ces aspirations est un de ses soucis constants, car il y va de la réussite de son action. Et cela de tous temps : au XIXe siècle, alors qu’il tente d’affirmer l’autorité encore fragile de la jeune institution ; sous la Troisième République, quand il installe l’école laïque dans les terres occitanes ; enfin, depuis la décentralisation des années 1980, qui en a fait un acteur majeur de l’aménagement du territoire de Midi-Pyrénées en matière de formation et de recherche.

    Le désir de calme : L’histoire du mouvement Sawaba au Niger (2021)

    Description: En 1954, Djibo Bakary, un activiste nationaliste de gauche nigérien fonda l’Union Démocratique Nigérienne (UDN), un parti politique qui visait non seulement à combattre la domination coloniale, mais aussi à réaliser une transformation large de la société nigérienne. Le parti fut salué par le cri de ralliement « Sawaba », un terme haoussa qui indique le soulagement par rapport à l’adversité et un retour au calme et à la sérénité soulignant l’aspiration des Nigériens à être délivrés de la pauvreté et de l’oppression coloniale sous toutes ses formes. Le Sawaba, dont le noyau était constitué d’un « petit peuple » de ruraux ayant migré en ville, remporta les premières élections générales au suffrage universel du Niger en 1957 et forma le tout premier gouvernement autonome du pays, sous suzeraineté française. En 1958, le mouvement eut maille à partir avec le pouvoir gaulliste de France préférant l’indépendance immédiate à une nouvelle forme d’autonomie et appelant à rejeter la constitution de la Ve République. Les Français, compte tenu la situation stratégique du Niger, réagirent de manière implacable. En violation flagrante de la constitution, un nouveau gouverneur émascula le gouvernement Bakary. La campagne du Sawaba fut contrecarrée. Le parti, interdit, devint une organisation militaire menant la guérilla. Cependant, la guérilla du Sawaba (1960-1966), soutenue par des régimes gauchistes étrangers, aboutit à un échec entraînant la destruction définitive du mouvement. Le récit des luttes du Sawaba n’est pas dénué d’ambigüité, ce qui renvoie au caractère hybride du mouvement et aux métamorphoses vécues au long de son existence. Les sawabistes se montrèrent un mélange singulier d’activistes politiques et de combattants qui, au lieu de faire violence à la population, s’engagèrent dans la bataille comme les agitateurs de rue qu’ils furent jadis – certes armés, mais avec l’espoir de plaire à l’électeur et d’entraîner une fin instantanée aux souffrances du peuple. Millénariste plutôt que militariste, cette mentalité donne la clef de la tragédie de leur défaite.

    Description: Les testaments sont une source majeure pour les historiens du Moyen Âge. En Forez et en Lyonnais, certains revêtent une forme particulière : ce sont des testaments oraux, mis par écrit après la mort du testateur, voire des années après. À partir du xive siècle, l'officialité de Lyon et le comte de Forez imposèrent une procédure régularisée et l'enregistrement des textes. Parmi les notaires, une élite de prêtres notaires joua un rôle pionnier dans la diffusion de cette réforme dans les paroisses de montagne. Les dépositions des témoins, souvent de très humbles gens, furent faites en langue vernaculaire. La majorité des 10 000 testaments enregistrés proviennent de villages. La nature du patrimoine, les activités, l'organisation de l'habitat, la structure des familles, sont bien différentes chez les éleveurs de bovins des Monts du Forez de ce qu'elles sont dans les paroisses viticoles bordant la Saône. Mais la pratique successorale cherche d'abord à préserver le patrimoine du morcellement. On constate que les rites funéraires demeurent très modestes. Quant au clergé, il est souvent peu nombreux, tandis qu'il est pléthorique et bien organisé à Lyon et Montbrison. Ce livre - accompagné de documents inédits, édites et traduits - est une synthèse dressée après trente années de recherche. Il décrit la pratique testamentaire. Pratique mouvante quand on sait que les Foréziens pratiquèrent du xiiie au xve siècle trois procédures testamentaires différentes. Il montre la richesse documentaire que révèle le testament dans les domaines les plus variés : répartition du peuplement, profession des testateurs, pourcentage des femmes parmi ceux qui testent et ceux qui témoignent, relations sociales, vie quotidienne, etc. Sont fournis enfin un index des noms de lieux, un index des matières et un index analytique.
