Description: Geophysical experiments next year in Romania may provide insight into a common but short-lived seismic process that can be observed and understood at only one spot on Earth at present. About 150 stations will be set up in the Vrancea area in the southeast Carpathian Mountains to, in effect, record the terminal phase of the detachment of a subducting slab of oceanic lithosphere. This is a major regional tomographic study using a large number of broadband seismometers, which will operate for 6 months. Images will be used for hazard assessment as well as for a delineation of detachment history.Active subduction of oceanic lithosphere at convergent plate boundaries involves earthquakes, magmatism, metamorphism, and deformation—some of the most vivid manifestations of any plate tectonic process. The initiation and termination of subduction, however, remains relatively poorly understood. When convergence of lithospheric plates ceases and the suction force of the subducting plate becomes negligible, the subducting slab moves into an almost vertical position. If subduction occurs in an arcuate geometry, the slab is likely to be segmented.

Description: Data from the Projecto de Investigacion Sismologica de la Cordillera Occidental (PISCO) seismic network and from six broadband seismographs that were operating in northern Chile were used to investigate the mantle in the convergent boundary zone between Nazca plate and the South American continent for the presence of anisotropy. Broadband data as well as long-period filtered data of teleseismic SKS and PKS phases were analyzed for the presence of shear wave splitting as a possible indicator for seismic anisotropy in the mantle beneath the PISCO network. Measurable shear wave splitting was observed with maximum delay times between the slow and fast split wave of the order of 1 s. Splitting of S waves from intermediate-depth events located directly beneath the PISCO network in the descending Nazca plate is generally associated with small delay times of the order of 0.1 s, a value typical for the continental crust. Near-vertical ScS reflections from two deep earthquakes in Argentina and one nearby intermediate-depth earthquake have similar splitting parameters as the SKS phases. This means that the anisotropic zone causing the splitting of the core phases can be constrained to the Pacific mantle underlying the subducting Nazca plate. It probably does not extend deeper than about 260 km. The majority of the anisotropy directions inferred from the core phases are parallel to the absolute plate motion (APM) direction of the Nazca plate, which is about N80°E. At some stations, however, the fast polarization direction is pointing N160°E, nearly parallel to the strike of the trench and the Andes which would be compatible with the trench-parallel flow model for South America proposed by Russo and Silver [1994]. This direction is observed over an approximately 100-km-wide band to the west of the active volcanic zone. It may represent either a second anisotropy regime in the mantle, a small-scale diversion of slab-entrained mantle flow, or a relatively small area where slab entrainment of mantle flow is reduced or ceases to exist. The large number of observed APM-parallel fast directions suggests, however, that the mantle beneath the descending Nazca plate in northern Chile deforms mainly as the result of slab-entrained mantle flow. The large variations of anisotropy directions in the Andean subduction zone indicate that asthenospheric flow in the Pacific mantle has a complex pattern which may vary over scale lengths of a few hundred kilometers and which may be governed by slab morphology.

Description: A stack of the wide‐angle reflection/refraction component of the URSEIS‐95 experiment provides the first well‐resolved imaged of the Moho beneath the southern Urals. The processing consisted of low pass filter (0–6 Hz), CMP sorting, and a NMO correction without stretch. The PmP phase, a very narrow band and low frequency (up to 6 Hz) wavelet, changes character from west to east along the transect. In the depth converted section, the Moho reaches a maximum depth of 53±2 km beneath the Magnitogorsk arc. Thickness estimates determined from high amplitudes at near critical distances also support a 53 km thick crust. A selective offset stack consisting of traces at 150–250 km offset indicate an undulating, irregular Moho, suggesting either strong lateral velocity variations or high topographic relief beneath the Magnitogorsk arc.

Description: A fluid injection-induced seismicity experiment was undertaken in the KTB (German Continental Deep Drilling Program) main borehole at 9 km depth. Several hundred microearthquakes were recorded by a three-component geophone at 4 km depth in the pilot hole of the KTB about 200 m west of the main hole. More than 100 of these events were also recorded with good signal-to-noise ratio by a 73-element temporary network at the surface. Several different clusters of microearthquakes with distinct waveforms were defined. Compound fault-plane solutions for the two most prominent clusters of seismic events were determined: a strike-slip mechanism for cluster 1 at an average depth of about 8.9 km and a strike-slip/reverse mechanism for cluster 4 (with the “main” ML = 1.2 event) at an average depth of 8.6 km. For both fault-plane solutions, the P axis is subhorizontal and oriented NNW-SSE, similar to the N160°E direction of maximum horizontal stress observed in the well bore. Both clusters were analyzed using an empirical Green's function method to derive the relative source time function (RSTF). Azimuthal variations of the RSTF were used to determine rupture directions and velocities. By combining the information about rupture directions with fault-plane solutions, it was possible to identify the active fault planes (NE striking nodal planes) for both clusters. Although injection-induced events are supposed to exhibit a dilatational component due to the tensile character of the source, the moment tensor inversion for both microearthquake clusters resulted in a double-couple contribution of about 90% and P axes similar to the direction of maximum horizontal stress observed in the borehole. The isotropic components of the moment tensors are insignificant due to the size of the location uncertainties. From records of the sensor at 4 km depth, we found seismic moments of the microearthquakes ranging from 107 to 1011 N-m. The spectra were corrected for Q [Q(f) = 420 f0.5 for P, and Q(f) = 230 f0.5 for S-waves, which were determined assuming an ω2 model]. Following Brune (1970, 1971), we found source radii between 12 and 28 m and stress drops between 0.01 and 6 MPa. The average ratio of S- to P-wave energy was determined as 14.2. Our relation between seismic moment and ML is log M0 = 1.01 ML + 9.68, and between energy and seismic moment, log E = 2.0 log M0

Description: Magnetotelluric fieldwork was carried out in the southwest of Ireland as part of an integrated study of the Variscan Front. Data from a network of stations in southwest Ireland were collected, processed and modeled using a variety of equipment and computational methods. Extensive 2D modeling and inversion yielded models which gave insights into Variscan processes. 3D modeling yielded a strong yet surprising result showing the interaction of Variscan and Caledonian processes. Profile and regional models are developed and described.

Description: Well-known Dey & Morrison's [l] finite difference (FD ) algorithm for the 2-D modelling of direct currents is modified for generally anisotropic 2-D structures. By Fourier transforming the general current conservation equation with respect to the strike coordinate, the original 2½-D problem for the potential of a single feeding electrode is decomposed into an infinite number of 2-D problems in the wave number domain. Applying the area discretization (volume integration) scheme to the transformed 2-D PDEs, a 9-point FD stencil is obtained at each mesh node within the anisotropic structure, with generally complex elements for the direct neighbours of the central node. The resulting FD matrix is banded, 9-diagonal, complex and non-symmetric, but Hermitian. Gaussian elimination for real, symmetric and banded matrices is slightly modified to apply to the Hermitian matrices, and used to solve for the wave number potential components . Numerical tests and modelling examples of 2-D anisotropic structures are presented. Extension of the technique to 3-D models with anisotropy is discussed.

Description: While sustainability is in danger of being reduced to a meaningless platitude, the brutal fact remains that industrial countries make a disproportionately large and negative impact on the environment. A serious transition to sustainability will require changing people's mindsets and social institutions, in addition to public policies, technologies and business practices. This book presents a path-breaking analysis as well as highly innovative proposals for managing this transition. Emanating from Europe's foremost environmental policy think-tank, it has already stirred up a major new debate in Germany on radical, but feasible, directions in which the governments of industrial societies ought to be moving. The concept of "environmental space" and its ingenious development of indicators for measuring an economy's national and global impact combine with its delineation of concrete policies to give this book its intellectual power and potential political impact.

Description: The European Commission has established the Eco Management and Auditing Scheme (EMAS) to promote and institutionalize corporate environmental management and environmental audits. This article summarizes a study primarily concerned with the execution of an ecoaudit in a medium-sized furniture enterprise according to the rules of EMAS. Material flow accounting was used to assess and analyze the "gate-to-gate" and "cradle-to-grave" environmental impacts related to the firm's products and activities. A resource management strategy was developed that permits the determination of methods for firm-specific material flow management, product management, and ecological product design to improve environmental performance as seen from the vantage point of resource efficiency.

Description: "Joint Implementation" (JI) is considered by many participants in the international negotiations on aclimate protocol to be an important economic instrument for the implementation of greenhouse gas obligations. Apart from a wide range of problems that still have to be resolved on the project level, the institutional and procedural design of such a mechanism is of vital importance. Because JI has a "perverse incentive" to overstate results achieved by individual projects, careful reporting, monitoring and verification procedures are essential. Furthermore, the institutional structure must reconcile the sometimes conflicting demands of overall effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. This paper explores the possible design of a future international mechanism for JI and makes recommendations with regard to the institutional and procedural requirements.

Description: Since the early 1980s, there has been a lively discussion about the rhetoric of economics. Ecological economists, however, so far have not tried to incorporate this discussion into their work. This paper is a first step towards including the discourse on rhetoric into the self-awareness of ecological economics. After a brief outline of what this discourse is about, the importance of metaphors as one aspect of rhetoric is examined. Connections of the rhetorical discourse to ecological economics as a post-normal science are shown. It is argued that two rhetorics of ecological economics can be distinguished: internal and external rhetoric. While the former refers mostly to methodological issues, the latter is of particular importance for the political impact that ecological economics can have. Finally, some suggestions for research are made.

Description: International and national climate change policies may either mutually support or block each other. The international political debate can on the one hand be a driving force, mainly because of its "agenda-setting" power for the national political debate, but on the other hand the outcome of international climate change policy depends on the capability of national governments to formulate adequate political goals and programs, and to have the power for their realisation and implementation in the national political process. The following analysis will focus on the differences in climate change policy in Gerrnany and the United States. From a po1itical science perspective, it has to deal with the determinants and restrictions of the policy-making processes and their impact on policy formulation and implementation in both countries. Two kinds of determinants will be considered: structural "internal" determinants deriving from the specific setting and mode of operation of the political-administrative systems, and external determinants, such as public opinion, the role of the media. interest groups, and cultural values, which favour or restrict the process of a pro-active climate change policy.

Description: The Andes Mountains developed along the western margin of SouthAmerica in response to the subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate below the South American plate since the Jurassic times. It is considered as one of the classic examples of a mountain chain developed in an active continental margin. Although their present physiography is given by the Andean tectonics, the Central Andes are the result of complex interplay of Precambrian and Paleozoic terrane accretion and phases of compression and extension. The Puna and Eastern Cordillera represent key elements in the tectonic evolution of the Central Andes. The present study covers a region of the northern Puna and Eastern Cordillera extending from approximately 22°S to 24°S and 65 °W to 66°30'W in Argentina. About 1200 km of seismic lines were interpreted and were used as a geometrical constraint for the construction of a 3D gravity model of the area.

Description / Table of Contents: This successful textbook describing the fundamentals of the physics of real fluids makes accessible to students the understanding of common flow systems and flow phenomena which has been obtained from research over the past 50 years. It is intended for systematic use by both undergraduates and beginning graduate students of applied mathematics and engineering. The book assumes no previous knowledge of fluid dynamics, and the material in it has been selected to introduce a reader to the important ideas and applications. The emphasis throughout is on physical principles and generalities of fluid dynamics. Particular attention is paid to the correspondence between observation and the various conceptual and analytical models of flow systems. Many photographs of flow fields are included. The first three chapters prepare the ground for a discussion of any branch of fluid dynamics, and describe the physical properties of fluids, kinematics of flow fields, and the governing equations in general form. Chapters 4 to 7 are all concerned with the motion of a uniform incompressible viscous fluid, this subject being at the centre of fluid dynamics by virtue of its fundamental nature and practical importance. An unconventional feature of the book is that the motion of viscous fluid and the properties of flow at high Reynolds number are considered first; the circumstances in which the viscosity may safely be assumed to be zero are thus made clear before the detailed discussion of motion of an inviscid fluid. Irrotational flow theory and its many applications are then described, and the last chapter is concerned with rotational flow of effectively inviscid fluid, with examples drawn from geophysics, aeronautics, and other fields.

Description / Table of Contents: This is an up-to-date textbook on meteorology ond climatology with a fresh, unconventional view of the workings of the climate system, in which the author poses serious questions about the validity of certain aspects of current global warming theory. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I the author discusses general circulation in the troposphere. He argues that such circulation is driven by thermal deficil at the poles, causing Moving Polar Highs (MPHsl, which have the principal role of feeding cold air towards the tropics, This in turn causes warm air to move up towards the poles. The relief and distribution of land masses, and the Earth's rotation, control the trajectories of the MPHs, and the formation of Anticyclonic Agglutinations (AAs). The latter determine the properties of tropical circulation, the trade winds, and tropical monsoons. These discussions lead, in Part II, 10 a consideration of the dynamics of the weather through the study of perturbations, including precipitation, the role of MPHs in polar and temperate regions and at tropical margins, pulsations in the trade winds and monsoons, the concept of the meteorologIcal Equator, and tropical cyclones. Part Ill reviews the causes of climatic variations, including solar activity, variations relating to the Earth's orbit and axial inclination, volcanic eruptions and the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. The book concludes with a discussion of Palaeoclimatic variations and recent climatic evolution, including the Sahelian drought, changes in polar and alpine glaciers, and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation,

Description / Table of Contents: The Southern Ocean strongly interacts with the atmosphere and with glacial ice, sea ice and the sea floor over the immense and productive Antarctic continental shelf and slope. Water masses transformed and ventilated there subsequently influence the properties and circulation of the deep global ocean. In this latest oceanology volume of the Antarctic Research Series, polar scientists describe and model air-sea and ice-ocean interactions, the formation and chemistry of deep and bottom waters, regional circulations, tidal heights and currents, ocean bathymetry, interannual variability and the Antarctic Slope Front. With international authorship and interdisciplinary scope, this compilation and the related volumes Antarctic Sea Ice physical processes and Antarctic Sea Ice biological processes also cover the impacts of ice crystals and icebergs, sea ice biology and geophysics, and the important roles of sea ice in atmospheric and oceanographic processes.
