    Beschreibung: The 1990s saw a revival of the currency board system, and proponents have advocated it as an easy-to-set-up exchange rate arrangement providing effective stabilization of the economy. However, the experience of Argentina has highlighted the risks of having a currency board. This study presents both the potential benefits, as well as the risks, of having a currency board by examining the stability of the currency board arrangement and identifying factors affecting the stability. The analysis is based on second-generation currency crisis models, extended to incorporate currency-board specific features and to account for particular aspects often found in currency-board economies.

    Beschreibung: Dvorjanskoe gnezdo ist zwischen 1856 und 1858, in den stürmischen, hoffnungsvollen Reformjahren zu Beginn der Regierungszeit Alexanders II., konzipiert und niedergeschrieben worden. Kernstück der Reformen sollte die Aufhebung der Leibeigenschaft sein. Das bedeutete, daß es nach 1855 um die Zukunft des russischen Adels ging und seine Rolle in der Gesellschaft neu definiert werden mußte. Turgenev als Angehöriger der Adelsklasse war davon unmittelbar betroffen.

    Rationality Concepts in Environmental Valuation (2021)

    Beschreibung: Survey based valuation techniques like the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) rely particularly on the premise of respondents’ rationality when answering willingness to pay (WTP) questions. Results of CVM surveys have repeatedly put this fundamental assumption into question. This study adopts a more realistic view of rationality accounting for respondents’ limited capacities to process information. Based on cognitive psychology a technique to detect and analyze the bounds of rationality inherent in WTP statements is developed. Using an empirical example, the influence of bounded rationality on the validity of CVM results is analyzed. It is shown that individual differences in information processing play a major role. From these results recommendations for future survey design are developed.

    Beschreibung: In 2001, goodwill amortization in the US was eliminated in favor of an impairment-only approach, which, according to critics, gives managers vast discretion and opportunities for earnings management. Prior research suggests that discretionary asset write-offs are associated with economic factors and managers’ financial reporting objectives. Based on a systematic literature review, this study investigates for a comprehensive sample of US firms the determinants of goodwill write-off behavior. Regression analysis shows that write-off behavior is significantly explained by firms’ economic properties. Only in large, high-profile firms, incentives appear to be significant determinants. These findings suggest that the impairment-only approach does capture goodwill impairment at least to some extent.

    Beschreibung: Two outstanding representatives of Russian modernism - Andrei Belyy for the movement of symbolism, Osip Mandel'tam for acmeism - chose the Caucasus as a tourist destination for their travels in the last decade of their lives within the borders of the Soviet Union. For both, the cultural-historical context was crucial in several ways in this choice. It concerns, on the one hand, the poet's own person and his cultural awareness, which refers to his integration into traditional contexts both in Russian and in world culture. On the other hand, Belyj and Mandel'štam in the Caucasus are looking for an encounter with a cultural space which, through its rich history, during which it has been exposed to a variety of foreign influences and yet retains its specific character, is able to provide these two factors in a unique way ,
    Beschreibung: Zwei der herausragenden Vertreter der russischen Moderne - Andrej Belyj für die Strömung des Symbolismus, Osip Mandel'štam für die des Akmeismus - wählten für ihre Reisen, die sie jeweils im letzten Jahrzehnt ihres Lebens innerhalb der Grenzen der Sowjetunion unternahmen, den Kaukasus als Reiseziel. Für beide war bei dieser Wahl der kulturgeschichtliche Kontext in mehrerer Hinsicht entscheidend. Er betrifft zum einen die eigene Person des Dichters und dessen Kulturbewußtsein, das sich auf seine Einbindung in Traditionszusammenhänge sowohl innerhalb der russischen als auch der Weltkultur bezieht. Zum anderen wird von Belyj und Mandel'štam im Kaukasus die Begegnung mit einem Kulturraum gesucht, der durch seine reichhaltige Geschichte, in deren Verlaufer den unterschiedlichsten Fremdeinflüssen ausgesetzt war und dennoch seinen spezifischen Charakter bewahren konnte, diese beiden Faktoren in einzigartiger Weise zu gewähren imstande ist.

    Beschreibung: In January 1995, four Latin American countries, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay joined their destinies within a common and ambitious enterprise called MERCOSUR. MERCOSUR, the Common Market of the South, represents an important economic integration area that generates a GDP of $US 600 billion, providing a market of 200 million people spread over an area of 12 million square km. Initially, MERCOSUR performance has been more than successful, as intra-MERCOSUR trade has increased significantly. However, the elimination of intra-MERCOSUR tariffs will not be efficient if at the same time the sharp variability of nominal exchange rates artificially affects the relative prices of different products. The question as to the choice of the optimal exchange rate system to be adopted among MERCOSUR countries becomes critical if MERCOSUR states attempt to go further along the path of increasing their trade flows of goods and services. The study contributes to filling this gap by providing some alternative answers to this issue. The analysis has been based on three pillars: a theoretical review of exchange rate systems; a review of the European experience; and an analysis of the Latin American experience.

The studies show from different angles how an adverse family background has permanent negative effects on employment, wages and labour mobility, particularly in the presence of structural economic changes. In general, this book is a contribution to understand why inequality is highly persistent in Latin America, a place where low levels of income, poverty and vulnerability are likely to be passed on to the next generation.

    Beschreibung: This book provides an overview of the modifications and interaction of the Second-Language Learning discursive formation and the Identity discursive formation over four centuries of Russian history. It proposes an explanatory model in which small-scale linguistic detail is combined harmoniously with larger-scale language units in order to illuminate matters of cultural importance in their linguistic guise. Hallmark of its interdisciplinary scope is the isomorphic interpretation of image and text. Compositionally, interdisciplinarity pours into a nonlinear narrative; this narrative follows a spiral, redefining on a higher level and in a different setting distinctions, which were first discovered on a lower level with the theoretical devices of other disciplines. The lower coil of the helix accommodates the complementary argumentations of anthropology and lexical semantics; the higher one brings the conclusions to the plane of discourse analysis and semiotics

    Beschreibung: Reducing poverty and increasing wellbeing in developing countries have become central aims of both the national policy-makers as well as the international community. With the Millennium Development Declaration of 2000, the international community has agreed to focus on poverty reduction and the reduction of deprivation in its many dimensions. This book investigates conceptual and empirical issues on the measurement of trends in wellbeing, poverty, and inequality, illustrated for Bolivia and Colombia. The book contributes significantly to filling data gaps by combining existing data in a new way. Furthermore, it presents an important step forward to focus more on multidimensional outcomes of wellbeing rather than on monetary inputs and to develop tools to monitor the progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

It presents a panorama of different ideologies of accelerated development, which dominated the world just before the war and in the next 40 years. The author explains why in the 1970s global and local elites began to turn away from the state, exchanging statism for the belief in the «invisible hand of the market» as a panacea for underdevelopment. He focuses not only on the genesis of underdevelopment, but also on the causes of popularity of economic planning, and the advent of neoliberalism in the discourse of development economics. This book evaluates the power of state as a vehicle of progress and focuses in detail on the Soviet Union, China, Poland, Ghana, Tanzania, and South Korea.

    Beschreibung: L’électricité, un service public jacobin ? À rebours des idées reçues, cet ouvrage montre le rôle joué par les pouvoirs locaux dans la construction de ce qui est devenu un pilier de l’État-Providence en France, au XXe siècle. Cette influence, peu abordée dans l’historiographie, doit être mise en regard avec les origines du secteur électrique : un système sociotechnique ancré et organisé au niveau communal. Jamais effacée, cette « matrice » a façonné de manière durable la gestion du service public. Elle explique le maintien de plusieurs prérogatives locales au moment de la nationalisation (concessions de distribution, régies municipales et départementales, etc.). Elle éclaire la prise de certaines décisions après la création d’Électricité de France, en matière de redistribution sociale (soutien aux usagers domestiques) ou d’aménagement du territoire (péréquation des prix, électrification rurale). En exhumant l’action des pouvoirs locaux et de leur principale organisation représentative, la FNCCR (Fédération nationale des collectivités concédantes et régies), cette autre histoire du service public, racontée « par le bas », nuance la vision d’un État hégémonique. Elle permet aussi de mieux appréhender les mutations actuelles du secteur électrique, à l’heure où les questions de décentralisation refont surface dans les débats politiques.

    Beschreibung: With the invention of eyeglasses around 1280 near Pisa, the mundane medium of glass transformed early modern optical technology and visuality. It also significantly influenced contemporaneous art, religion, and science. References to glass are found throughout the Bible and in medieval hagiography and poetry. For instance, glass is mentioned in descriptions of Heavenly Jerusalem, the Beatific Vision, and the Incarnation. At the same time, a well-known Islamic scientific treatise, which likened a portion of the eye’s anatomy to glass, entered the scientific circles of the Latin West. Amidst this complex web of glass-related phenomena early modern Italian artists used glass in some of their most important artworks but, until now, no study has offered a comprehensive consideration of the important role glass played in shaping the art of the Italian Renaissance. Seeing Renaissance Glass explores how artists such as Giotto, Duccio, Nicola Pisano, Simone Martini, and others employed the medium of glass—whether it be depictions of glass or actual glass in the form of stained glass, gilded glass, and transparent glass—to resonate with the period’s complex visuality and achieve their artistic goals. Such an interdisciplinary approach to the visual culture of early modern Italy is particularly well-suited to an introductory humanities course as well as classes on media studies and late medieval and early Renaissance art history. It is also ideal for a general reader interested in art history or issues of materiality.

    Beschreibung: East German science fiction enabled its authors to create a subversive space in another time and place. One of the country’s most popular genres, it outlined futures that often went beyond the party’s official version. Many utopian stories provided a corrective vision, intended to preserve and improve upon East German communism. This study is an introduction to East German science fiction. The book begins with a chapter on German science fiction before 1949. It then spans the entire existence of the country (1949-1990) and outlines key topics essential to understanding the genre: popular literature, socialist realism, censorship, fandom, and international science fiction. An in-depth discussion addresses notions of high and low literature, elements of the fantastic and utopia as critical narrative strategies, ideology and realism in East German literature, gender, and the relation between literature and science. Through a close textual analysis of three science fiction novels, the author expands East German literary history to include science fiction as a valuable source for developing a multi-faceted understanding of the country’s short history. Finally, an epilogue notes new titles and developments since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

    Beschreibung: The book deals with the issue of the Holocaust in the Polish literature for children and adolescents. Drawing upon some of the leading Polish authors of the twentieth and the twentieth-first centuries, the author reveals the historical, ideological, and cultural entanglement of their works. The main focus of the book is to search for reasons behind the outpouring of interest in the Holocaust noticed in the most recent Polish literature for younger readers. Among these reasons, the author lists the Polish local and historical context, the new approach to issues traditionally seen as taboo, the development of memory and postmemory narratives, and the postmodern shift from a discursive totality and universalist explanations.

Exploring American, French and Russian contexts (Poe’s writing, Baudelaire’s oeuvre, Balmont’s texts, the symbolist style, the bylinna tradition), highlighting the correspondences between Leśmian and the romantics (Pushkin, Gogol) as well as the modernists (Jesienin, Gorodetsky) and connecting his work to Ukrainian culture through the evocation of old Slavic folklore, the book showcases Leśmian’s work as an example of interliterary and inter-cultural transfer of aesthetics, styles, genres and motifs. A crucial outcome of this research is the codifying of a contextual analysis as a method of comparative studies.

    Beschreibung: The book provides the first analysis of Karl Christian Friedrich Krause’s system of philosophy and his panentheism in English. Karl Christian Friedrich Krause has bequeathed to us a system of philosophy which is little recognised in contemporary philosophy. This is both surprising and unfortunate, because Krause’s philosophical system has much to offer: Through transcendental reflection on the nature of the human, Krause understands God as the one infinite and unconditioned reality, and the ultimate necessary condition of knowledge. God makes humanity, nature, and reason ultimately comprehensible as the essential categories of the divine Essence. God is thus the single, primary, object of science that is already logically presupposed even before His discovery. Science presupposes theology, and theology is best read as panentheism.

    Beschreibung: 〈P〉The author asks how far the extension of employer-supported childcare serves as a driver for higher maternal labor supply. She addresses this question by categorizing employer-supported childcare as an efficiency wage introduced by the employer to increase the working volume of mothers. Applying various impact evaluation techniques in an econometric analysis, the author concludes that the availability of employer-supported childcare has a positive impact on the length and working volume of mothers who return back to work after giving birth.     Beschreibung: To expand existing literature on loyalty schemes, the impact of stand-alone vs. multi-partner programs on customer loyalty was evaluated. In addition, the effects of store satisfaction, membership in competing programs, as well as various shopper characteristics were tested. Therefore, interviews were conducted with loyalty executives and a survey was carried out with 1,150 German customers of two fuel station chains. Stand-alone programs were found to outperform multi-partner schemes in their ability to trigger behavioral loyalty (e.g. share-of-wallet), attitudinal loyalty, and positive word-of-mouth. While program members showed significantly higher levels of loyalty than non-members, those of the stand-alone solution did so to an even greater extent than those of the coalition scheme.〈BR〉 «Best Dissertation of 2011» by the WU – Vienna University of Economics and Business and Winner of the «Outstanding Award 2011» by the ECR Austria.

    Beschreibung: European politics has provided clear signals: the next round in the process of EU enlargement with the accession of the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) will come. Since expectations concerning the costs and benefits of integration are varied, it is our aim to contribute to this discussion by undertaking an empirical assessment of integration. Firstly the extent of potential free labour mobility between the CEEC and the EU is assessed using an econometric model. On that basis, different integration scenarios, i.e. trade liberalisation, capital transfers and labour migration are simulated using a computable general equilibrium model. Our results suggest that migration flows will be moderate and that integration is likely to cause positive welfare effects in the CEEC and negligible effects in the EU.

Using our vocal chords, we produce a vocal sound or noise which is then shaped into a specific vowel sound by the resonances of the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities, that is, the vocal tract. Accordingly, the acoustic description of vowels relates to vowel-specific patterns of relative energy maxima in the sound spectra, known as patterns of formants. The intellectual and empirical reasoning presented in this treatise, however, gives rise to scepticism with respect to this understanding of the sound of the vowel. The reflections and materials presented provide reason to argue that, up to now, a comprehensible theory of the acoustics of the voice and of voiced speech sounds is lacking, and consequently, no satisfying understanding of vowels as an achievement and particular formal accomplishment of the voice exists. Thus, the question of the acoustics of the vowel—and with it the question of the acoustics of the voice itself—proves to be an unresolved fundamental problem.

    Beschreibung: This book aims at developing an understanding of multicultural work in five Organisations of the United Nations. The context of international organisations differs from international companies, amongst others, with regards to the legal base, the financial and operational agenda, and human resource practices. The purpose of this study is to explore which factors are a trigger, a barrier, and/or an influence on team and group work in this specific context. Based on 50 semi-structured, personal interviews which were analysed within the framework of constant comparison method, a typology of multicultural work is provided. Moreover, this study offers an integrative view of the reciprocal relationships between organisation, management, group and individual.

    Beschreibung: Media Distortions is about the power behind the production of deviant media categories. It shows　the politics behind categories we take for granted such as spam and noise, and what it means to our broader understanding of, and engagement with media. The book synthesizes media theory, sound studies, science and technology studies (STS), feminist technoscience, and software studies into a new composition to explore media power. Media Distortions argues that using sound as a conceptual framework is more useful due to its ability to cross boundaries and strategically move between multiple spaces—which is essential for multi-layered mediated spaces. Drawing on repositories of legal, technical and archival sources, the book amplifies three stories about the construction and negotiation of the ‘deviant’ in media. The book starts in the early 20th century with Bell Telephone’s production of noise, tuning into the training of their telephone operators and their involvement with the Noise Abatement　Commission in New York City. The next story jumps several decades to the early 2000s focusing on web metric standardization in the European Union and shows how the digital advertising industry constructed web-cookies as legitimate communication while making spam illegal. The final story focuses on the recent decade and the way Facebook filters out antisocial behaviors to engineer a sociality that produces more value. These stories show how deviant categories re-draw boundaries between human and non-human, public and private spaces, and importantly, social and antisocial.

    Beschreibung: From Aristotle to Heidegger, philosophers distinguished two orders of time, before, after and past, present, future, presenting them in a wide range of interpretations. It was only around the turn of the 1970s that two theories of time which deliberately went beyond that tradition, enhancing our notional apparatus, were produced independently of one another. The nature philosopher Julius T. Fraser, founder of the interdisciplinary International Society for the Study of Time, distinguished temporal levels in the evolution of the Cosmos and the structure of the human mind: atemporality,prototemporality,eotemporality,biotemporality andnootemporality. The author of the book distinguishes two ‘dimensions’ in time: the dimension of the sequence of time (syntagmatic) and the dimension of the sizes of duration or frequency (systemic). On the systemic scale, the author distinguishes, in human ways of existing and acting, a visual zone, zone of the psychological present, zone of works and performances, zone of the natural and cultural environment, zone of individual and social life and zone of history, myth and tradition. In this book, the author provides a synthesis of these theories.

It investigates its research topic – the Carpathian Mountains – through the prism of institutions and organizations that have objectified it and have interacted in its governance over the past ten years. As such, the Carpathian Mountains never constitute an object per se in this book, but are rather understood as a region continuously objectified by discourses, inscriptions and practices. Four months of ethnographic field work under the direction of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the interim secretariat of the Carpathian Convention have unveiled environmental institutions that remain largely unknown to both the general public and to researchers.
    Beschreibung: La signature le 22 mai 2003 à Kiev de la Convention cadre pour la protection et le développement durable des Carpates constitue l’acte fondateur de la construction d’un nouvel espace transnational visant la mise en application de politiques environnementales coordonnées à l’échelle du massif de montagne. Cet ouvrage réinvente l’exercice de la monographie régionale en appréhendant cette région des Carpates au prisme des institutions et des organisations qui l’ont objectivée et qui interagissent dans sa gouvernance depuis une dizaine d’années. Dans cette perspective, les Carpates ne figurent jamais dans cette étude comme un objet en soi, mais comme une région objectivée par des discours, des inscriptions et des pratiques d’acteurs. Grâce à une enquête ethnographique menée au secrétariat de la Convention des Carpates administré ad intérim par le Programme des Nations-Unies pour l’Environnement, cette étude ouvre la boîte noire d’institutions environnementales qui restent largement méconnues du grand public et des chercheurs eux-mêmes. Elle retrace les étapes par lesquelles la région des Carpates prend forme, souvent de manière contestée, et se trouve progressivement institutionnalisée.

    Beschreibung: 〈P〉The odd and brilliant works of Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedenskii were lost to both Russia and the West for some thirty years. It was the misfortune of these writers to be nurtured in a period of literary experiment that was cut off suddenly just as they were starting out. Their first steps, taken under the aegis of an antic literary group called Oberiu, turned out to be the only public testament of their career, and to this day Oberiu remains the touchstone of their notoriety in the West. The connection is unfortunate, because the silence that was forced on the group became paradoxically the silence under which Kharms and Vvedenskii matured as writers. Their later works, masterpieces of black humor with an infusion of the sacred, are firmly rooted in the Russian tradition, and bear comparison with the finest works of the European theater of the absurd. 〈/P〉

    Beschreibung: The book deals with product recommendations generated by information systems referred to as recommender systems. Recommender systems assist consumers in making product choices by providing recommendations of the range of products and services offered in an online purchase environment. The quantitative research study investigates the influence of psychographic and sociodemographic determinants on the interest of consumers in personalized online book recommendations. The author presents new findings regarding the interest in recommendations, importance of product reviews for the decision process, motives for submitting ratings as well as comments, and the delivery of recommendations. The results show that opinion seeking, opinion leading, domain specific innovativeness, online shopping experience, and age are important factors in respect of the interest in personalized recommendations.

    China – The New Developmental State? (2021)

    Beschreibung: The central focus of this analysis is whether the economic growth of China can be attributed to an emulation of the development models of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Based on the developmental state theory, an East Asian developmental state model is set up as a benchmark. The thesis uses an empirical analysis of the auto industry to highlight the performance outcome of China’s development strategy. The author confirms that China has evolved into a developmental state similar in its core characteristics to the three leading East Asian states. The model of development in China, however, is an innovative combination of factors from the developmental states, the legacies of the past command economy as well as of the adopted market economy mechanism including international capital flows.

    Joint Pricing and Inventory Control under Reference Price Effects (2021)

    Beschreibung: In this work, we address the problem of simultaneously determining a pricing and inventory replenishment strategy under reference price effects. This reference price effect models the fact that consumers not only react sensitively to the current price, but also to deviations from a reference price formed on the basis of past purchases. Immediate effects of price reductions on profits have to be weighted against the resulting losses in future periods. By providing an analytical analysis and numerical simulations we study how the additional dynamics of the consumers’ willingness to pay affect an optimal pricing and inventory control model and whether a simple policy such as a base-stock-list-price policy holds in such a setting.

This book aims at drawing the attention of researchers and practitioners towards the importance of various ‘layers’ of context on multinational teams and developing an empirically derived framework for multinational team functioning in business organisations. It shows how companies make use of these teams and how these teams contribute to competitive advantage. The study has been conducted in an Austrian, a German, and an American company. It reveals that if managed appropriately, these teams reduce the complexity of operations by facilitating the creation and transfer of explicit and tacit knowledge and by transferring appropriate dimensions of headquarter corporate culture between geographically dispersed business units.

    Beschreibung: Démocratie et diversité sont-elles conciliables ? Et, si oui, à quelles conditions ? Selon un discours dominant, le modèle libéral, pluraliste et multiculturel serait le seul véritablement en mesure de répondre à ce défi. Mais le prix à payer serait un renoncement à l’idéal républicain du bien commun et à l’idée d’une communauté de citoyens qui s’autogouvernent. Les auteurs de ce livre, qu’ils s’inscrivent dans les courants républicain, libéral ou radical, ne partagent pas ce constat. La conciliation entre démocratie et diversité n’a pas le libéralisme multiculturel comme seul horizon. Au contraire, c’est en reposant les fondements de la démocratie, et en conservant à l’arrière-plan un certain héritage républicain, que peut émerger une nouvelle approche de la diversité. Pour certains auteurs, cet héritage républicain est celui de posséder une grammaire culturelle commune afin d’assurer une cohésion collective, pour d’autres, il s’exprime comme liberté de non-domination ou encore comme modèle d’autodétermination démocratique. Un héritage qui est pluriel, mais qui a encore un rôle aujourd’hui pour répondre aux problèmes politiques des sociétés démocratiques, dont celui de la diversité et de la reconnaissance des différences.

Pour faire face à l’incroyable expansion des systèmes scolaires durant le 20e siècle, les formations ne cessent de se développer pour répondre à la complexification de la profession enseignante. Si leur inscription au niveau tertiaire se généralise, elle ne fait pas l’unanimité et reste sujette à caution, même si elle permet un rapprochement avec l’Université, lieu de production des savoirs de référence pour l’éducation. Pour mieux comprendre les racines du processus de professionnalisation de l’enseignement, cet ouvrage retrace la mise en place des formations à l’enseignement primaire et secondaire dans les quatre cantons universitaires de Fribourg, Genève, Neuchâtel et Vaud. A travers une double approche monographique et comparative, il analyse les inscriptions institutionnelles ainsi que les savoirs disciplinaires et professionnels dispensés dans ces formations et pointe les tensions et enjeux qui jalonnent de manière récurrente leur évolution.

    Beschreibung: Cet ouvrage retrace la sociogenèse de l’internationalisme éducatif durant le premier 20e siècle à partir de l’une de ses matrices, le Bureau international d’éducation (BIE). Créé à Genève par l’Institut Rousseau, en 1925, pour construire la paix par la science et l’éducation, ce Bureau se conçoit d’abord comme caisse de résonance des mouvements réformistes　; dès 1929, sous la direction de Jean Piaget, le BIE devient la première institution intergouvernementale en éducation puis lie ses destinées à celles de l’Unesco en 1952, dont il constitue un organe précurseur. L’ouvrage s’attache à montrer comment le BIE tente de rallier tous les États de la planète, pour construire une charte des aspirations mondiales de l’instruction publique. Il témoigne des causes promues et négociées, non sans résistances　: droit des populations juvéniles –　même les plus vulnérables　– à une pédagogie adaptée et à une large culture　; justice scolaire, corolaire de la justice sociale　; éducation à la paix　et à l’esprit critique　; amélioration des conditions de travail et de formation des enseignants. It is a personal testimony to experiences lived through, a confession of intimate inner experience and a challenge addressed to the reader to engage in dialogue, enter into an argument or join in a game. The stances of witness, confession and challenge are always present, though usually one of them overshadows the other two. Polish memoirs, diaries and letters, as well as novels of a clearly personal character, are interpreted here in the context of the most important autobiographical texts of European literature.     Beschreibung: The study focuses on user satisfaction with websites and personalised internet applications in particular. The abundance of information on the web is increasing more and more. Therefore, the significance of websites targeting the users’ preferences, like personalised Internet applications, is rising. The aim of this study was to find out which factors determine user satisfaction with personalised internet applications. Factors like the usefulness of the information or trust towards how personal information is handled were considered. A large-scale user survey evaluating three internet applications (from the travel, e-learning and real estate domains) was conducted. Expert opinions were collected to complement the results and provide insights from users’ and experts’ points of views.

    Beschreibung: Poverty and inequality persist in many regions of the developing world. This may be due mainly to an ineffective targeting of policies to address the root causes of poverty. Sustainable policy interventions are in need of reliable concepts of poverty and of a thorough understanding of the underlying mechanism that lead to such deprivation. The three essays of this book add to the debate concerning appropriate statistical tools in empirical development economics. The work proposes specific methodologies to analyze the extent of poverty and its underlying factors based on recent household surveys. The first chapter deals with a concept of poverty comparisons when panel data is at hand. The second chapter studies the determinants of spatial inequality using multilevel modelling. The third chapter analyzes the relation between a child’s nutritional status and its survival probability.

While teamwork is considered to be a possible remedy, so far little research on effectiveness of multinational teams was undertaken in international public organizations. The purpose of this book is to identify the distinctive characteristics that influence multinational team performance in a public management context. Based on a qualitative research approach a complexity model of multinational team performance was developed. This model can be used as a checklist to identify possible problems in multinational teams. Additionally, managerial implications of how to deal with the inherent complexity of multinational teams are given.

    Beschreibung: Regarding the Arab region, GDP per capita virtually stagnated for more than 20 years from 1980. During the same period, GDP per capita in the world’s highly industrialized states further increased and the gap between the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the highly developed countries widened. However, the differences between Arab countries and the Western states exist not only economically. The countries also differ regarding their political, legal, and social systems. This work explains the differences in development on the basis of institutional economics. In addition to a general theoretical part, an empirical analysis demonstrates the effects of institutions on income, and a historical case study explains the divergent development paths of the Arab region and selected advanced economies.

    Social Desirability and Environmental Valuation (2021)

    Beschreibung: Socially desirable responding (SDR) is an often-reported source of bias in survey interviews. It describes the tendency of a respondent to answer in a way that is socially desirable rather than to answer truthfully. This response bias also threatens the reliability and validity of survey-based environmental valuation techniques such as the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). Therefore, the study deals with the assessment of the conditions for the occurrence of SDR in CVM interviews. A behavioral model is devised to take into account a set of factors triggering SDR responses. The impact of these factors of SDR on willingness to pay (WTP) responses is tested. The results reveal that the relevant factors do not affect WTP statements simultaneously but rather influence them in an independent manner. These findings can improve future CVM studies by identifying respondents who are prone to be influenced by SDR.

    Beschreibung: This book combines the approaches of political theory and of intellectual history to provide a lucid account of Québec’s contemporary situation within the Canadian federation. Guy Laforest considers that the province of Québec, and its inhabitants, are exiled within Canada. They are not fully integrated, politically and constitutionally, nor are they leaving the federation, for now and for the foreseeable future. They are in between these two predicaments. Laforest provides insights into the current workings of the Canadian federation, and some of its key figures of the past fifty years, such as Pierre Elliott Trudeau, René Lévesque, Stephen Harper and Claude Ryan. The book also offers thought-provoking studies of thinkers and intellectuals such as James Tully, Michel Seymour and André Burelle. Laforest revisits some key historical documents and events, such as the Durham Report and the 1867 and 1982 constitutional documents. He offers political and constitutional proposals that could contribute to help Québec moving beyond the current predicament of internal exile.

    Beschreibung: This book explores the different treatment of writing by women and writing by men in twenty-first-century Spain. Focusing on contemporary Spanish authors Ana María Matute (1926–2014), Rosa Montero (1952–), and Lucía Etxebarria (1966–), the author examines how Spanish women writers are marketed in Spain and, in particular, how current marketing strategies reinforce traditional structures of femininity. Through an analysis of their work and lives in the context of the Franco Regime, the Transition to democracy and contemporary Spain, this book provides an innovative study of the construction of the public personae of these key female writers. As social media and the internet transform authors’ relationship with their readers, the rapidly shifting publishing industry offers an important context for the difficult balance between high levels of reception and visibility and the persistence of traditional gender stereotypes.

    Beschreibung: La société moderne a longtemps entretenu un rapport plus serein au passé qu’à l’avenir. Le récit du passé qui s’accumule dans les livres n’est-il pas cette chose inerte destinée à éclairer le présent ? Pourtant, litiges et controverses quant aux « vérités » que l’histoire prétend fonder ébranlent les certitudes. L’une des conséquences de l’impuissance de l’histoire à asseoir ce qui serait une certaine vérité du passé, c’est d’attirer à elle ceux qui voudraient s’y inscrire rétroactivement en invoquant les injustices mémorielles dont ils auraient été victimes. Si l’histoire s’ouvre ainsi à tout venant, c’est que la société elle-même n’est plus certaine de son identité non plus que du parcours qui l’a conduite jusqu’à elle-même. Dans les sociétés contemporaines où s’achève cet éclatement de la référence collective, on observe ainsi l’encombrement des acteurs se précipitant au cœur de l’histoire espérant y inscrire la mémoire de leur propre parcours.
