    Beschreibung: The art history of South Asia covers a time span of roughly four and a half thousand years. During this period, a vast number of animal stone sculptures has been produced, ranging from the pre-historic period till today and covering a great variety of motifs and imagery in different regions and religious traditions. Even so, the number of studies devoted to these animal sculptures has remained extremely limited. The present book aims at filling this knowledge gap. With this richly illustrated book, the first of its kind, Van der Geer offers a comparative study of the ways in which various animals have been depicted and a lucid analysis of the sculptors’ treatment of their “models”: living animals. The art history of sculptured animals is contextualized with a description of the use of animals as can be read from ancient texts, archaeological evidence and contemporaneous culture. In doing so, parallels as well as differences in style or iconography are highlighted, elucidating the variety of animal depictions across regions, religious contexts and through time. The corpus of discussed material ranges from Indus seals, stupa panels and railings, monumental temples from North and South India, non-religious palace and fort architecture to loose sculptures in museum collections.

    Beschreibung: Glavnina knjige je faksimile rokopisa, ki ga je leta 1856 napisal angleški duhovnik John Oliver po svojem obisku Postojnske jame v letih 1837 in 1852. Kljub temu v knjigi piše le malo o svojih izkušnjah, saj je večji del knjige prevod Schnaffenrathovega vodnika Beschreibung der berühmten Grotte bei Adelsberg in Krain iz leta 1834 v angleščino. Več Oliverjevih pripomb je v posebnem dodatku, ki vsebuje nekaj njegovih osebnih opažanj, kot tudi opis obiska Vilenice. Celota je ilustrirana s slikami iz takratnih knjig, kot tudi z nekaterimi njegovimi izvirnimi slikami in risbami. Daljši uvod Trevorja Shawa, ki je odkril ta dragocen, vrsto let domnevno izgubljen rokopis, razkrije, kdo je bil avtor »J. O.« in obrazloži pomen prevedenega vodnika iz leta 1834, kot tudi njegov vpliv na kasnejše vodnike po Krasu.

    Beschreibung: The in depth archaeological research of High Medieval castle presented in this book is unique in Slovenia and among just few in this part of Central Europe. The book is based on analysis of the archaeological data gathered in more than a decade of archaeological excavations in 1980s and 1990s.In the introductory chapter written sources and interpretative models are presented. The analysis of pictorial representations follows. The focus of the research is on the archaeological sources, though. Above all the analysis of the small finds, stratigraphy and spatial analysis of the castle itself and the castle in the landscape should be mentioned.
    Beschreibung: Knjiga je prva znanstvena monografija o arheologiji visoko srednjeveškega gradu v Sloveniji in se uvršča med le peščico tovrstnih knjig v širšem prostoru. Monografija sloni predvsem na analizi podatkov iz desetletja arheoloških izkopavanj v 80. in 90. letih 20. stoletja. V začetnem delu so predstavljeni pisni viri in interpretativni modeli v zvezi z nastankom in pomenom gradu. Sledi prikaz maloštevilnih, a nikakor ne nepomembnih slikovnih virov. Glavnino študije predstavljajo arheološki viri, predvsem priročniško uporabna tipokronološka analiza artefaktov, stratigrafija najdišča in prostorska analiza gradu.

    Beschreibung: The book presents a wealth of historical cartographic representations of Slovenian territory. It is divided into two main parts. The first or the text part briefly presents the history of European cartography up to the end of the nineteenth century, maps of the Slovenian territory up to the early twentieth century and maps as cultural heritage. In the second or cartographic part, in turn, features important historical maps of the Slovenian territory presented in chronological order. The format of the book enables an excellent presentation of the presented maps. The maps presented date from the mid-sixteenth century, when the first independent maps of present-day Slovenia were produced, to the beginning of the twentieth century, when cartography developed into a modern discipline. The aim of this book is to present the extensive Slovenian cartographic heritage.
    Beschreibung: Monografija predstavlja bogastvo zgodovinskih kartografskih upodobitev slovenskega ozemlja. Razdeljena je na besedilni in slikovni del. V besedilnem delu so predstavljeni zgodovina evropske kartografije do konca 19. stoletja, kartografski prikazi slovenskega ozemlja do začetka 20. stoletja ter zemljevidi kot kulturna dediščina. Slikovni del monografije pa prinaša kronološki prikaz pomembnejših zgodovinskih zemljevidov slovenskega ozemlja. Format knjige omogoča odličen prikaz zemljevidov od srede 16. stoletja, ko so nastala prva samostojna kartografska dela današnjega slovenskega ozemlja, do začetka 20. stoletja, ko se kartografija razvije v sodobno vedo. Namen monografije je opis in prikaz bogate slovenske kartografske dediščine.

    Beschreibung: This study investigates the role of embedded narratives in Silius Italicus’ Punica, an epic from the late first century AD on the Second Punic War (218–202 BC). At first sight, these narratives seem to be loosely ‘embedded’ in the epic, having their own plot and being situated in a different time or place than the main narrative. A closer look reveals, however, that they foreshadow or recall elements that are found elsewhere in the epic. In this way, they serve as ‘mirrors’ of the main narrative. The larger part of this book consists of four detailed case studies.

    Beschreibung: This book provides a novel approach to the history of medieval Anatolia by analysing political, religious and cultural developments in the region of Kastamonu during the reign of the Chobanid dynasty (c. 1211–1309). During the 13th century, the Chobanids consolidated a local dynasty in western Anatolia – a borderland between Islam and Christianity – becoming cultural actors patronising the production of religious, scientific and administrative works in the Persian language. These works, though surviving today in manuscript form, have received little attention in modern historiography. The book therefore attends to this gap in the research, incorporating a detailed study of texts by little-known authors from the time. The book explores the relationship between Islam and the Chobanid dynasty in the context of the wider process of Islamisation in medieval Anatolia, hypothesising that Turkmen dynasties played a fundamental role in this process of Islamisation and acculturation. The Chobanids of Kastamonu, then, offers an in-depth study of a Turkmen local dynasty that achieved political autonomy, financial independence and cultural patronage in medieval Anatolia vis-à-vis the main political powers of the time. Attentive to religious diversity, state formation and processes of transculturation in medieval Anatolia, the book is key reading for scholars of Middle Eastern history and Islamic studies.

    Beschreibung: E.A. Martel (1859-1938) is rightly regarded as one of the most important people in the history of cave study. Writing in French, as he did, his work was little known in those parts of central Europe that were in the Austrian empire. Thus much of what he wrote about the Classical Karst was not readily accessible to those now living in that area. It is for that reason that this English translation of his 1894 publication has been made. Martel had been in Slovenia from 14 September 1893 to mid October. He was shown the principal caves and karst features of the region by Wilhelm Putick who had been exploring these places from 1886 onwards. This assistance had been authorised by Count Falkenhayn, the Minister of Agriculture in Wien. Such was the importance with which Martel was regarded internationally.

As a result of this assumption, the polyvalence of figural artworks made for South Asian Muslim audiences has remained hidden in plain view. This book situates manuscript illustrations and album paintings within cultures of devotion and ritual shaped by Islamic intellectual and religious histories. Central to this story are the Mughal siblings, Jahanara Begum and Dara Shikoh, and their Sufi guide Mulla Shah. Through detailed art historical analysis supported by new translations, this study contextualizes artworks made for Indo-Muslim patrons by putting them into direct dialogue with written testimonies.

    Beschreibung: Siècle du passage à l’économie libérale et à la société industrielle, le xxie siècle voit en France la création littéraire et artistique prendre tous les caractères d’une « production » - pensée avant même notre entrée, au xxie siècle, dans l’ère de l’immatérialité numérique -, comme celle de « produits immatériels ». Les belles-lettres et les beaux-arts doivent alors et sans retour s’adapter à ce nouveau système d’échanges et de valeurs, viser un public de masse, trouver leur place dans le premier des médias modernes qu’est la presse périodique (journaux et revues). En même temps, l’État postrévolutionnaire invente et instaure la pratique spécifiquement française de la politique culturelle à des fins d’autolégitimation, d’identité nationale et d’instruction publique. Il définit juridiquement la propriété intellectuelle. C’est ainsi que s’organise un marché contrôlé et régulé de l’immatériel, dont les principes et les effets ne manquent pas de susciter réflexion et critiques chez les contemporains. Quant aux poètes, romanciers, dramaturges, compositeurs d’opéra, peintres, etc., tous, de créateurs devenus « producteurs », et contraints de se redéployer par rapport au nouveau cadre, ils l’acceptent, le contournent ou le combattent selon des stratégies très diverses. Ainsi, d’une manière ou d’une autre, cette situation finit-elle par s’inscrire dans l’énonciation, dans la poétique et dans la thématique de ce qu’ils persistent à vouloir nommer leurs œuvres. Bon gré, mal gré, elle les stimule à un renouvellement des formes et des genres. À travers les contributions d’une trentaine de spécialistes du xixe siècle, l’histoire culturelle et l’histoire de l’art joignent leurs approches à celles de l’histoire littéraire pour proposer des études de cas et construire une vision d’ensemble. L’ouvrage se focalise plus spécialement sur un certain nombre de témoins et d’acteurs centraux, tels Balzac, George Sand, Baudelaire, Vallès, Mallarmé, Courbet, qui permettent de dégager des phénomènes transversaux non dépourvus d’analogies avec la période de mutations actuelle.

Dans la littérature postrévolutionnaire, écrire le corps, c’est scruter les marques inscrites dans les chairs par la loi, les signes tracés par la société, les cicatrices laissées par l’Histoire. Les études réunies dans ce volume interrogent ces nouveaux paradigmes de la représentation littéraire du corps dans quatre perspectives : en premier lieu est explorée la signification politique qu’il prend chez Sade, Balzac ou dans le théâtre révolutionnaire ; est développée ensuite une analyse du difficile transfert du corps du roi, dégradé chez Michelet, au corps du peuple chez Dumas ou à celui d’un nouveau Christ chez les saint-simoniens ; en troisième lieu, l’interrogation porte sur les modalités de l’incarnation de l’Histoire chez les personnages de Chateaubriand, de Balzac ou de Barbey d’Aurevilly ; enfin est étudiée la relation entre corps et création, dans la poésie de Baudelaire ou dans l’écriture autobiographique de George Sand. Du théâtre comme espace où l’acteur incarne les rôles sociaux au roman où la corporéité ancre le personnage dans l’Histoire, ce volume montre comment la littérature du XIXe siècle a recouru au corps pour figurer les rapports, souvent conflictuels, de l’individu à la société, au politique et à l’Histoire.

    Beschreibung: La notion d’événement littéraire est née au dix-neuvième siècle, au moment où la littérature se constitue en objet historique, cependant que la médiatisation croissante du champ culturel entraîne des pratiques et des stratégies radicalement nouvelles. La conception événementielle de la littérature met au premier plan les critères d’écart, d’originalité ou de rupture, que ce soit dans l’appréhension des chefs-d’œuvre du passé ou la réception des productions contemporaines : la reconnaissance de ce qui fait événement engage nécessairement une (re)définition de la littérature. Question lourde d’enjeux, au moment où l’essor de la presse et les bouleversements du marché culturel imposent des règles inédites, souvent ressenties comme traumatisantes : la valeur d’une œuvre est-elle réductible à son impact événementiel ? celui-ci constitue-t-il une instance de légitimation ? un événement littéraire est-il encore possible dans le système éditorial moderne qui s’esquisse alors ? Le débat est aussi complexe que décisif : il questionne les effets sociaux de la littérature, et, au-delà, son possible impact sur l’histoire. L’événement littéraire oblige à se demander ce qu’est, ce que vaut, ce que fait la littérature.

    Beschreibung: Is the inside-view into the life of people invisible to the written records possible, then? One cannot simple transfer oneself into the past and observe. However, one can immerse in the same landscape and seek for the residuals of the past in language, place names, folklore, ordering of the landscape and various material remains, or even in younger written records in the form of the so called wirkungsgeschichte (record of younger consequence of an earlier phenomenon). The least one achieves is the role of the passive observer. It is the aim of this book to go even further and to demonstrate that the “inside” perspective is not unattainable~it can be achieved by using a combination of various sources: written sources, archaeology, ethnology, philology and historic geography. The image of early medieval society in the Bled micro-region thus forming reveals the community with tightly economic and political ties. Weather or not it was referred to as Župa Bled is not confirmed by the written sources but it is at least likely.

    Beschreibung: The volume Historični seminar 14 ('Historical Seminar 14'), issued in the time of transformed reality of what we knew and took for granted, draws attention to the fact that the image we cultivate of ourselves and our history may sometimes be too simplified to be entirely real. At first, the volume both revises already known chapters of Church history and introduces hitherto unknown ones. Simon Malmenvall’s analysis of the characters of the noble martyrs Boris and Gleb, Jovan Vladimir, and Magnus Erlendsson shows how the stories of their martyrdom had a nation-building function. Celeste McNamara’s article on Giovanni Barbarigo introduces the unusual and less well-known topic of seventeenth-century missions. Monika Deželak Trojar analyzes in detail Johann Ludwig Schönleben’s German and Latin Lenten sermons. Aleš Maver’s article discusses why Latin disappeared so quickly from Slovenian churches after the Second Vatican Council. On the other hand, the pre-modern religious practices of nature worshippers in Slovenia are discussed by Cirila Toplak. Modern times and also more political issues are examined by Tomaž Ivešić who focuses on the increase in ethnic tensions in Yugoslavia in the early 1970s, while Aleksandar Takovski traces the historical representation of heroic figures in four former Yugoslav countries.
    Beschreibung: Historični seminar 14 prihaja v nenavadnem času, ko se svet spreminja pred našimi očmi. Da bi bolje razumeli sedanjost, je treba (na novo) ovrednotiti tudi preteklost in sedem zanimivih člankov domačih in tujih raziskovalcev, ki so bili najprej predstavljeni v ciklu predavanj Historični seminar na ZRC SAZU, zgodovino prikazuje v novi luči. Simon Malmenvall je analiziral like vladarskih mučencev Borisa in Gleba, Jovana Vladimirja in Magnusa Erlendssona, Celeste McNamara pa je pisala o padovanskem škofu Giovanniju Barbarigu in predstavila misijone v 17. stoletju. Monika Deželak Trojar je analizirala nemške in latinske postne pridige Janeza Ludvika Schönlebna in pokazala kakšen spreten govornik je bil. Aleš Maver je na slikovit način predstavil razloge, zakaj se je latinščina po 2. vatikanskem cerkvenem zboru tako hitro izgubila iz slovenskih cerkva. Cirila Toplak se je posvetila naravovercem, zanimivi marginalni skupnosti na območju zahodne Slovenije, ki izkazuje predkrščanske in predmoderne kulturne prvine. Tomaž Ivešić je pisal o zaostrovanju nacionalnega vprašanja v Jugoslaviji v začetku sedemdesetih let, Aleksander Takovski pa o arhetipskih junakih in zlobnežih v Sloveniji, Hrvaški, Makedoniji in Srbiji.

    Beschreibung: The volume Historični seminar 13 ('Historical Seminar 13') offers a selection of articles that have been “filtered” through the cycle of lectures over the past two years. These articles were written by ten researchers from Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, and Germany. Historični seminar 13 continues to examine its origin in the humanities by looking at history and describing the past, with perspectives that are also directed toward other disciplines: geography, comparative literature, ethnomusicology, and cultural anthropology. However, it always maintains a critical distance, which is emphasized in various ways because many of the articles question previous assumptions of past studies and their subjective points of departure. In this manner, this volume makes an important contribution to critical thought about scholarship in general and about the future tasks of the humanities and the social sciences. At the same time, it adds an increasingly current ethical touch to much of its material. Historični seminar 13 is freely available online.
    Beschreibung: Historični seminar 13 prinaša izbor devetih razprav, ki jih je prispevalo deset slovenskih, avstrijskih, hrvaških in nemških strokovnjakov. V interdisciplinarnem prepletu humanističnih in družboslovnih ved izstopajo različni pogledi na zgodovino, v motrenje tega, kar je bilo, s pogledi, usmerjenimi tudi v geografijo, komparativistiko, etnomuzikologijo, kulturno antropologijo. A nikakor ne brez kritične distance, ki je v pričujoči monografiji na različne načine še posebej poudarjena, saj številni članki preizprašujejo predpostavke do sedaj že opravljenih raziskav in nujno subjektivna izhodišča, ki posameznike vodijo pri njihovih ugotovitvah (in jih seveda najdemo povsod, le da so v humanističnih vedah morda še bolj na očeh). Na ta način Historični seminar 13 lahko pomembno prispeva h kritični misli o znanosti ter o prihodnjih nalogah humanistike in družboslovja, obenem pa marsikateri vsebini dodaja tudi vse bolj aktualno etično noto. Monografija, ki jo bo v roke z veseljem vzel marsikateri bralec, je prosto dostopna tudi na spletu.

    Beschreibung: La Restauration marque la paradoxale résurrection du rituel de l’entrée royale cérémonie spectaculaire qui met en scène le pouvoir représenté par le souverain, et témoigne de sa mainmise symbolique sur le territoire dont sa propre personne incarne l’unité politique. Jusqu’aux débuts de la Troisième République, cette traditionnelle cérémonie du pouvoir connaît maints réinvestissements symptomatiques. Parallèlement, en ce siècle des révolutions, l’historiographie, la littérature, l’iconographie manifestent un intérêt tout particulier pour l’entrée royale ; en effet, ce dispositif complexe offre un modèle particulièrement efficace lorsqu’on s’interroge sur les modes de production de la légitimité politique. L’entrée royale, à la fois événement et récit, acte et paroles, construit une fiction du pouvoir : elle constitue un excellent point d’optique pour analyser le fonctionnement symbolique des fêtes de souveraineté, les logiques rhétoriques et stratégiques qui la fondent, enfin ses conditions d’efficacité et ses possibilités d’adaptation - toutes questions essentielles en un siècle qui travaille à une refondation symbolique prenant acte des effets de la Révolution.

    Beschreibung: The present book is volume of conference proceedings of the scientific meeting dedicated to the founder of modern Slovenian musicology, Dragotin Cvetko, and organised by the Institute of Musicology of the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts with the financial support of the Slovenian Research Agency and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The papers, organised in four linked and intertwining subject sections (Dragotin Cvetko – life and work~Metamorphoses of national music historiographies~European music historiographies – selected chapters~and Musicology – from national towards global) are accompanied in the present volume by some basic facts on Dragotin Cvetko, whose life and works it celebrates, and four addresses in his honour. The book is rounded off by a list of master and doctoral theses supervised by Professor Cvetko and a chronological presentation of events that celebrated in September 2011 the hundredth anniversary of his birth.
    Beschreibung: Pričujoče delo je spominski zbornik, v katerem so objavljeni predvsem referati z znanstvenega srečanja, ki ga je v počastitev stote obletnice rojstva akademika, prof. dr. Dragotina Cvetka, utemeljitelja sodobne slovenske muzikologije, priredil Muzikološki inštitut Znanstvenoraziskovalnega centra SAZU ob podpori Agencije za raziskovalno dejavnost in Slovenske akademije znanosti in umetnosti. Poleg referatov, ki so bili predstavljeni v štirih prepletajočih se in vsebinsko povezanih sklopih (o življenju in delu Dragotina Cvetka, o preobrazbah nacionalnih glasbenih historiografij, o vprašanjih evropske glasbene historiografije ter o muzikologiji ter njenem prehajanju od nacionalnega proti globalnemu) so v knjigi objavljeni tudi nekateri osnovni podatki o slavljencu in nekaj prav spominu naj napisanih besedil. Delo zaokrožuje še seznam vseh slavljenčevih magistrandov in doktorandov ter kronološka predstavitev vseh dogodkov, ki so bile Dragotinu Cvetku v septembru 2011 posvečene.

Lilijana Žnidaršič Golec na podlagi pričevanj župljanov župnije Ig iz leta 1782 osvetljuje tedanjo cerkveno vernost, odnose med ljudmi in problematiko t. i. poznega janzenizma. Irena Selišnik piše o novih političnih praksah na prelomu iz 19. v 20. stoletje, za katere je značilen pojav množičnih političnih strank. Prispevek Gentiane Kera analizira povezavo med porokami, vodenjem gospodinjstev in demografskimi težavami, ki so vplivale na nastanek in strukturo gospodinjstev v Tirani. Mojca Žagar Karer analizira razlike med terminološkimi slovarji, leksikoni in enciklopedijami. Anja Benko pregledno predstavi razvoj in stanje slovenske narečne leksikografije ter predlaga model za izdelavo narečnega slikovnega slovarja. Silvo Torkar pa piše o slovenskih zemljepisnih imenih, ki so tvorjena iz slovanskih antroponimov.

The first volume of Studia Alpium et Adriae contains the contributions of twenty-one authors from four countries (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Austria) who present the results of their work conducted in recent years within different research groups and projects.

    Beschreibung: Publishing medieval charters for Slovenian history is a long-term effort. The first four volumes were still published in the days of the pioneer of the project, Franc Kos (in the period 1902–1915), with the fifth book, published by his son Milko Kos, following somewhat later on. It was only in 2002 that France Baraga published, on the basis of the collected materials, the Central Catalogue of Medieval Charters of Dr. Božo Otorepec from the Milko Kos Historical Institute of ZRC SAZU, the sixth volume of medieval charters encompassing a relatively short period of ten years, 1246–1255. The volume appeared without an index of names, the publication of which has been postponed until today.This book therefore contains an accurate explanatory index of personal and place names, thus completing Baraga’s edition of 295 medieval charters.The book comes with a CD Gradivo za slovensko zgodovino v srednjem veku. 6/1 – Listine 1246–1255. 6/2 – Imensko kazalo [Materials for Slovenian Medieval History. 6/1 – Charters 1246 – 1255. 6/2 – Index of names] and both books in pdf-format.
    Beschreibung: Izdajanje srednjeveških listin za slovensko zgodovino je delo, ki nastaja na zelo dolg rok. Prve štiri knjige so bile izdane še za življenja začetnika projekta Franca Kosa (v obdobju 1902–1915), peta knjiga, ki jo je izdal njegov sin Milko Kos, pa je že nekoliko bolj oddaljena (1928). Šele leta 2002 je France Baraga na podlagi zbranega gradiva, Centralnega kataloga srednjeveških listin dr. Boža Otorepca z Zgodovinskega inštituta Milka Kosa ZRC SAZU, objavil šesti zvezek srednjeveških listin, ki zajema relativno kratko desetletno obdobje 1246–1255. Zvezek je izšel brez imenskega kazala, katerega izid se je zavlekel do sedaj.

    Beschreibung: Razprava je nastala v okviru mednarodnega projekta »Zamolčani holokavst: spomin na deportacijo prekmurskih Judov« ter je izčrpen prikaz ene najbolj groznih in žalostnih epizod sodobne svetovne in slovenske zgodovine. Besedilo je razdeljeno na dva dela, in sicer opis priprav in izvedbo »največjega organiziranega zločina v zgodovini civilizacije« ter predstavitev prizorišč tega zločina na slovenskih tleh. V prvem delu avtor osvetli okoliščine, zaradi katerih je do holokavsta in genocida nad slovanskimi narodi sploh prišlo oziroma zakaj in kako sta iz obrobnih ekstremističnih fašističnih in nacističnih idej vzniknila kar dva totalitarna imperija in kako sta človeštvo pripeljala do največje katastrofe v zgodovini. V drugem delu je podrobno predstavljeno dogajanje na slovenskih tleh, s poudarkom na Prekmurju, kjer so do leta 1944 delovale tri dobro organizirane in za pokrajino izjemno pomembne judovske skupnosti. Abstraktna in težko predstavljiva tragičnost druge svetovne vojne je tako predstavljena skozi konkretne usode pregnanih in skozi zgodbe o tistih, ki se niso nikoli vrnili.

The striking dawn and dusk descriptions in the Thebaid offer a perfect illustration of the way in which the traditional characteristics of the motif can be remodelled to produce new meaning. Explorant des textes encore mal connus, comme les Études historiques ou l’Analyse raisonnée de l'Histoire de France, et jetant un nouvel éclairage sur des œuvres comme l'Essai sur les révolutions, le Génie du christianisme ou les Mémoires d'outre-tombe, cet ouvrage collectif analyse la manière donc Chateaubriand a pensé l’Histoire et dont il a envisagé son écriture dans le nouveau champ littéraire qui se constitue au début du XIXe siècle.     Beschreibung: Important anniversaries of prominent historians have become traditional opportunities for the gift to the celebrator in the form of scientific contributions from his colleagues and the colleagues who have worked with him fruitfully or are still doing so. Marušičev zbornik is a tribute to one of the leading historians of the Slovene region in contact with its western neighbors, historian prof. Branko Marušič at the age of 80. He has created a very important oeuvre, while outlining basic research directions, which some have continued to gain. One of the prominent results of this “scientific transfer” is the present scientific monograph, with the highly significant subtitle, Zgodovinopisec zahodnega roba (The Historian of West Edge). In a single volume, it represents the contribution of different generations of historians to new insights into the history of coastal space, especially that of the borderland, which throughout history has encountered coexistence with “the other.” Different historical sources and their careful analyzes and interpretations, which the authors place in different time contexts, contribute to new or original scientific knowledge. The monograph is actual and important for the development of historiography, also because of the development of Slovenian scientific terminology.
    Beschreibung: Kot je v recenziji zapisal izr. prof. dr. Gorazd Bajc, postajajo pomembni jubileji vidnih zgodovinarjev že tradicionalne priložnosti poklona slavljencu v obliki znanstvenih prispevkov kolegov in kolegic, ki so z njim plodno sodelovali oziroma to še vedno počnejo. Marušičev zbornik je poklon enemu izmed vodilnih preučevalcev zgodovine slovenskega prostora v stiku z zahodnimi sosedi, zgodovinarju prof. dr. Branku Marušiču ob njegovi 80-letnici. Ustvaril je zelo pomemben opus, obenem pa začrtal temeljne raziskovalne usmeritve, ki so jih nekateri s pridom nadaljevali. Eden izmed vidnih rezultatov tega »znanstvenega prenosa« je pričujoča znanstvena monografija z zelo pomenljivim podnaslovom Zgodovinopisec zahodnega roba. Na enem samem mestu namreč predstavlja doprinos različnih generacij zgodovinarjev k novim spoznanjem o zgodovini primorskega prostora, posebej tistega mejnega, ki se je skozi zgodovino ves čas srečeval s sobivanjem z »drugim«. Različni zgodovinski viri in njihove pozorne analize ter interpretacije, ki jih avtorji umeščajo v različne časovne kontekste, prispevajo k novim oziroma izvirnim znanstvenim spoznanjem.

People who are important in the study of caves and karst are known for what they did, what they wrote and whom they influenced. But as individuals they are often no more than a name. They may perhaps be recognized for other aspects, as a King perhaps, or a novelist or a famous doctor. Some, like Darwin or Freud, have changed the world in other ways~but very many had only normal quiet lives during which they also explored, studied or wrote about caves. It is they whose wider lives are difficult to trace and it is 4634 of them who are recorded here, with information from birth certificates, obituaries, unpublished letters and mentions by other people. It is their wider lives that help to show them as real people. In some cases their interest in caves was a part of their professional lives. In many others it provides stimulation and relaxation in otherwise busy lives. But in every case it was the same person and the same brain that enjoyed both~and it was both that made them the people they were. It is only from the biographical sources recorded here, that each person can be understood.
    Beschreibung: To je zelo dolgočasna knjiga. Tako kot slovar vsebuje samo dejstva: dejstva, ki jih ni mogoče najti drugje. Ljudje, ki so pomembni za preučevanje jam in krasa, so znani po tem, kaj so počeli, kaj so napisali in na koga so vplivali. Toda večkrat o njih poznamo zgolj ime. Morda o nekaterih vemo tudi kaj več, med njimi so kralji, romanopisci ali zdravniki. Nekateri, denimo Darwin ali Freud, so svet celo spremenili, toda večinoma so imeli le neizstopajoče normalno življenje, med katerim so tudi raziskovali, preučevali ali pisali o jamah. To so tista življenja, o katerih je težko najti kaj več. V knjigi je 4634 gesel, ki vsebujejo podatke iz rojstnih listov, osmrtnic, neobjavljenih pisem in omembe drugih ljudi. Šele ta širši pogled iz njih naredi prave ljudi. V nekaterih primerih je bilo njihovo zanimanje za jame del njihovega poklicnega življenja. V mnogih drugih le spodbuda in sprostitev v sicer napornem življenju. Toda v vsakem primeru so ista oseba in isti možgani uživali oboje~in oboje ju je osebnostno izoblikovalo. Razumemo jih lahko le s pomočjo tukaj zbranih bibliografskih virov.

    Beschreibung: The publication of this outstanding book marks the beginning of the Brill book series Roma History and Culture. The core of the present volume is an until now unpublished manuscript by Shakir Pashov (1898-1981), a Bulgarian Roma activist whose name continues to be surrounded by rumours and myths. The volume includes the original manuscript of Shakir Pashov on the history of the Gypsies in Europe, followed by archival documents highlighting his life and work, and the text of the first booklet devoted to him, which was the first attempt to create a Roma historical narrative. There is also included an extended biography of Shakir Pashov as known by now. The book contributes to identifying and highlighting the numerous inputs Roma have had to shape their activism and popularise their historical knowledge. Pashov's manuscript is a prominent example of these efforts.

    Beschreibung: In Dinner at Dan, Jonathan S. Greer provides biblical and archaeological evidence for sacred feasting at the Levantine site of Tel Dan from the late 10th century - mid-8th century BCE. Biblical texts are argued to reflect a Yahwistic and traditional religious context for these feasts and a fresh analysis of previously unpublished animal bone, ceramic, and material remains from the temple complex at Tel Dan sheds light on sacrificial prescriptions, cultic realia, and movements within this sacred space. Greer concludes that feasts at Dan were utilized by the kings of Northern Israel initially to unify tribal factions and later to reinforce distinct social structures as a society strove to incorporate its tribal past within a monarchic framework.

    Beschreibung: In the early 19th century part of the Slovenian, Italian, Austrian, Croatian and Montenegro territory has been included into political and administrative unit known as the Illyrian Provinces. The Illyrian Provinces incurred at the request of Napoleon Bonaparte and, together with its fall also ceased to exist. The edition of this book was prepared in order to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the Illyrian Provinces, to highlight the role of cartography in the Slovenia and to emphasize the importance of the historical moment of the causes and consequences of the Illyrian Provinces. Almost unknown Gaetano Palma is the author of cartographic display of the territory of the Illyrian Provinces. The merits of the map are: relatively large map scale, quality cartographic representation of the terrain and systematic breakdown of some cartographic elements. This depiction of the Illyrian Provinces was designed for completely common purpose, which should help to better recognize and to assimilate displayed area. Therefore, the authors have added several important aspects to the reproduction of this map. These are: an overview of the status of a state of the Illyrian Provinces, transparent outline of the main achievements of the Napoleonic Cartography in the Eastern Adriatic and the Eastern Alps regions and detailed geographical description and index of geographical names. Herewith they presented the map and the happening of that time to the modern reader.
    Beschreibung: Del slovenskega, italijanskega, avstrijskega, hrvaškega in črnogorskega ozemlja je bil v začetku 19. stoletja vključen v politično in upravno enoto, imenovano Ilirske province. Nastale so na zahtevo Napoleona Bonaparta in skupaj z njegovim padcem tudi prenehale obstajati. Pričujoča knjiga želi obeležiti dvestoto obletnico Ilirskih provinc, poudariti vlogo kartografije na Slovenskem ter pomen zgodovinskega trenutka z vzroki in posledicami nastanka Ilirskih provinc. Skoraj nepoznani Gaetano Palma je avtor kartografskega prikaza takratnega ozemlja Ilirskih provinc. Odlike zemljevida so razmeroma veliko merilo, kakovosten kartografski prikaz reliefa in sistematična razčlenitev nekaterih kartografskih prvin. Ta upodobitev Ilirskih provinc je bila izdelana za povsem vsakdanji namen, ki naj bi pomagal bolje spoznati in vsestransko razumeti prikazano območje. Zato so avtorji dodali reprodukciji zemljevida še pregled državnopravnega statusa Ilirskih provinc, pregledni oris glavnih dosežkov napoleonske kartografije na območju vzhodnega Jadrana in vzhodnih Alp, podroben geografski opis ter indeks geografskih imen. S tem so zemljevid in takratno dogajanje predstavili sodobnemu bralcu.

    Beschreibung: The Crisis of Causality deals with the reaction of the Dutch Calvinist theologian Gisbertus Voetius (1589-1676) to the New Philosophy of René Descartes (1596-1650). Voetius not only criticised the Cartesian idea of a mechanical Universe; he also foresaw that shifting conceptions of natural causality would make it impossible for theologians to explain the relationship between God and Creation in philosophical terms. This threatened the status of theology as a scientific discipline. Apart from a detailed analysis of the Scholastic and Cartesian notions of causality, the book offers new perspectives on related subjects, such as seventeenth-century university training and the Cartesian method of science.     Beschreibung: The word ‘crusade’ covers today a wide variety of meanings in most European languages. The link between these uses and the historical phenomenon labelled as ‘crusade’ by historians is often very narrow and particularly changing. Understanding the real meaning of the word ‘crusade’, its connotations and implications, and thus the conscious or unconscious intentions of its uses requires a precise knowledge of the historical evolutions of the word, from its first appearance in the 13th century until nowadays. This book offers the first comprehensive view of the historical construction of the meaning of the word ‘crusade’ through comparative perspectives from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Its 11 articles, introduction and conclusion examine different uses of the word, in a single language or within a specific context, and analyse each of them as a different conceptualisation of the crusading phenomenon. The book explains the progressive widening of the meaning of the term, from a military expedition to Jerusalem to the most metaphorical uses. It demonstrates the differences between the connotations of the word in various languages and cultures and, thus, the variety of its possible uses. It insists on the reluctance and reticence that ‘crusade’ has always provoked since the Middle Ages, precisely because the conceptualisation it implied was not shared by all.
