On s’interrogera sur les relations entre connaissance métaphysique et connaissance philosophique, sur la nature des essences et sur leur connaissance, sur les liens entre essences et modalités, sur la place que joue, pour élucider celles-ci, une réflexion sur l’essentialisme et sur les espèces naturelles, sans oublier la manière dont doit se faire l’articulation entre les formes a priori et a posteriori de la connaissance.

Le pluriel de l’art ne tient-il pas à ce qu'il participe simultanément de la recherche d'un principe et de l'abandon à l'événement ?

    Description: La théorie de Darwin aussi bien que sa réception scientifique, littéraire et politique en France continuent d’être matière à débat. Les controverses qu’elle a suscitées à partir de la première traduction française de L’Origine des espèces en 1862 n’ont pas été le seul fait des naturalistes, des géologues ou des paléontologues. De nombreux autres savants se sont préoccupés de l’impact du darwinisme sur leur discipline, notamment en philologie, dans les mathématiques, la linguistique, la psychologie comparée, l’histoire ou la philosophie. Les auteurs des textes réunis dans Darwin au Collège de France montrent que le Collège de France constitue un point de référence idéal pour étudier les idées de Darwin et leur réception ainsi que la manière dont elles ont pu jouer sur la formation des disciplines du milieu du xixe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Parmi les défenseurs ou les adversaires français du darwinisme, on compte en effet plusieurs de ses professeurs, à commencer par Pierre Flourens, dont l’Examen du livre de M. Darwin (1864) a été l’un des premiers comptes rendus hostiles de L’Origine des espèces. D’autres figurent encore dans la liste : Ernest Renan, Edgar Quinet, Théodule Ribot, Jean-Charles Lévêque, Étienne-Jules Marey, Jean-François Nourrisson, Michel Bréal, Gabriel Tarde, Henri Bergson, Étienne Gilson. À cette liste s’ajoutent les professeurs de biologie, de médecine, de paléontologie, de neurosciences, ou d’économie politique. Le colloque, dont les contributions sur quelques-uns des savants mentionnés ci-dessus sont réunies dans le deuxième volume de la collection « Passage des disciplines », a été organisé par Alain Prochiantz et Antoine Compagnon dans le cadre du projet « Passage des disciplines : Histoire globale du Collège de France, xixe siècle - xxe siècle », qui s’intéresse à l’évolution des matières enseignées aussi bien que celles qui ont n’y ont pas été admises et qui forment un « Collège virtuel », depuis la fin du xviiie siècle jusqu’aux années 1960. Il est dirigé par Antoine Compagnon, avec la collaboration de Céline Surprenant et le soutien financier de PSL (2016-2019), et de la Fondation Hugot.

    Description: Bruno Latour is one of the leading figures in Social Sciences today, but his contributions are also widely recognised in the arts. His theories ‘flourished’ in the 1980s in the aftermath of the structuralism wave and generated new concepts and methodologies for the understanding of the social. In the past decade, Latour and his Actor-Network Theory (ANT) have gained popularity among researchers in the field of architecture. Latour for Architects is the first introduction to the key concepts and ideas of Bruno Latour that are relevant to architects. First, the book discusses critically how specific methods and insights from his philosophy can inspire new thinking in architecture and design pedagogy. Second, it explores examples from architectural practice and urban design, and reviews recent attempts to extend the methods of ANT into the fields of architectural and urban studies. Third, the book advocates an ANT-inspired approach to architecture, and examines how its methodological insights can trace new research avenues in the field, reflecting meticulously on its epistemological offerings. Drawing on many lively examples from the world of architectural practice, the book makes a compelling argument about the agency of architectural design and the role architects can play in re-ordering the world we live in. Following Latour’s philosophy offers a new way to handle all the objects of human and nonhuman collective life, to re-examine the role of matter in design practice, and to redefine the forms of social, political and ethical associations that bind us together in cities.

    Description: Si c’est « malgré tout » qu’il faut défendre la sociologie, c’est malgré ce qu’elle est devenue. Bien loin de ses grandes espérances initiales et des splendeurs que nous ont léguées les Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Mead, Elias, Mauss, etc. Ce que l’on appelle sociologie s’est peu à peu recroquevillé jusqu’à apparaître comme la « science (ou la pseudo science) des restes », la science de ce dont ne parlent ni les philosophes, ni les économistes, ni les historiens, ni les anthropologues, ni les théoriciens de la littérature, etc. Éclatée en de multiples chapelles théoriques ou idéologiques, privée de colonne vertébrale paradigmatique et institutionnelle, elle ne croit plus pouvoir trouver son unité que dans une référence de plus en plus incantatoire au « terrain » et à l’empirisme, et dans ses querelles infinies sur ce qui fait la bonne méthode ou le bon terrain. La sociologie classique, celle qu’il nous faut faire revivre et actualiser, se présentait tout autrement. Elle revendiquait hautement une approche empirique de la réalité et le souci d’établir des faits, elle aussi, mais elle n’imaginait pas que ce puisse être accompli hors-théorie et sans enjeux normatifs, c’est-à- dire éthiques et politiques... Dit autrement, elle se vivait comme le lieu et le moment généraliste de la science sociale générale. C’est cette sociologie là, autrement dit la science sociale générale, qui nous fait désormais défaut et qu’on appelle ici à renaître de ses cendres.

    Emploi, bénévolat et financement des associations culturelles (2021)

    Description: En 2011, une association sur cinq a une activité culturelle. Sur ces 267 000 associations culturelles, 35 100 emploient au moins un salarié, l’activité de toutes les autres reposant exclusivement sur la participation bénévole. Il y a 169 000 salariés employés par des associations culturelles, soit 9,4 % de l’emploi salarié associatif. Comme pour les entreprises, les salariés des associations culturelles sont plus fréquemment en contrat court et ont un niveau de formation plus élevé que les salariés des autres secteurs. On compte en moyenne cinq salariés par association culturelle employeuse, deux fois moins que la moyenne. Les associations s’appuient également sur des bénévoles, qui donnent donc de leur temps sans être rémunérés. Les associations culturelles emploient de manière bénévole l’équivalent de 189 000 emplois à temps plein. Le nombre de bénévoles présents dans une association culturelle est d’environ 18. Chaque bénévole travaille en moyenne 63 heures par an dans une association sans salariés, et 86 heures par an dans une association employeuse de salariés. En 2011, le budget cumulé de l’ensemble des associations culturelles est estimé à 8,3 milliards d’euros. En termes monétaires, les associations culturelles pèsent à peu près autant qu’en termes d’emplois au sein de l’économie associative : 9,7 %. Une association culturelle dispose d’un budget moyen de 31 000 euros, deux fois moins que la moyenne d’un budget associatif, du fait de leur taille plus réduite. Les associations culturelles sont moins dépendantes des financements publics (40 %) que la moyenne (49 %). En particulier, elles ont moins accès aux commandes publiques et se financent plutôt par le biais de subventions. Les communes sont, plus que dans les autres secteurs associatifs, à l’origine d’une grande part des subventions, notamment pour les associations qui n’emploient aucun salarié. La moitié des associations culturelles réalise de façon principale ou secondaire une activité d’organisation ou d’accueil de spectacle vivant. Elles ont en moyenne moins de salariés que celles des autres activités culturelles, des budgets plus réduits et ont davantage recours au bénévolat.

    Description: La tension entre le non-dualisme et le dualisme domine toute l’histoire du Vedanta. En face de l’advaita de Śaṅkara, le système de Madhva, auquel cette étude est consacrée, représente l’extrême dualisme, dvaita. Cependant Madhva, après avoir posé la réalité irréductible de la différence entre Dieu et le monde, a comme compensé cette scission de l’être par l’affirmation que tout être autre que l’Être absolu est dépendant de celui-ci, seul Dieu ne dépendant que de lui-même. L’originalité du système de Madhva est d’inventer une relation nouvelle entre l’Être et les êtres. Seul l’Être est capable de faire exister des êtres différents de lui et totalement dépendants de lui ; Dieu permet à toute réalité d’être, et d’être ce qu’elle est.

Cet ouvrage vise à présenter au public francophone, y compris au lecteur profane en matière de politique sociale brésilienne, la mise en place et l’évolution des différents programmes d’allocations sociales, dont le plus connu est la Bourse-Famille.     Description: La recherche et l'aménagement du territoire des années 1960 nous ont légué l'image persistante de réseaux urbains régionaux et nationaux, construits sur la base de rapports hiérarchiques entre des villes de stature et de rayonnement inégaux. Comment ces positions, assignées par la puissance objective des agglomérations, mais aussi par la représentation et par la volonté aménagistes ont-elles évolué depuis près de trente ans ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous avons choisi de partir du cas spécifique de Pau, promue sous-capitale régionale par le schéma d'armature urbaine de l'Aquitaine (1965), mais soucieuse aussi, dès cette époque, d'affirmer son leadership sur l'aire quelque peu mythique des Pays de l'Adour, concurremment à Tarbes et surtout à Bayonne. Pour tenter d'éclairer, aujourd'hui, l'actualité des hiérarchies, des concurrences et des complémentarités entre cités, s'exprimant dans le cadre de l'Aquitaine (et au-delà lorsque les frontières administratives ne correspondent plus à l'articulation des réseaux), nous avons privilégié une approche des rapports urbains qui passe par l'étude de l'économie, de la géographie, mais aussi de la sociologie des services marchands aux entreprises. La poussée de ces activités de pointe illustre en effet l'expansion rapide d'un secteur tertiaire supérieur très expressif de l'Influence réelle qu'exercent les villes sur l'espace géographique ; très démonstratif de leur capacité, en somme, à forger des régions.

    Description: Suivre l’itinéraire universitaire et politique de Guy Rocher, c’est littéralement refaire l’histoire du Québec de la dernière moitié du siècle dernier. Qu’on ne s’étonne donc pas que cet ouvrage aborde tout autant l’œuvre du sociologue que, plus largement, les boule­ver­sements d’une société confrontée aux défis incessants de sa modernisation. Si les témoignages nous font pénétrer dans l’intimité de l’homme et du citoyen, les analyses signées par des professeurs de renom nous dévoilent, sous un jour neuf, le paysage social, politique et scientifique du Québec. Écrits à partir de perspectives disciplinaires les plus diverses (science politique, droit, sociologie, histoire, etc.), les textes qui composent cet ouvrage nous permettent de mieux comprendre, non seulement l’évolution globale de la société québécoise, mais les enjeux bien contemporains que l’histoire a légués en héritage à la génération présente. Guy Rocher est né à Berthierville en 1924. Ses études classiques terminées, il joint les rangs de la Jeunesse étudiante catholique. Il fait par la suite ses études en sciences sociales à l’Université Laval avec le père Georges-Henri Lévesque et son doctorat en sociologie à l’Université Harvard sous la direction de Talcott Parsons. À son retour, il enseigne la sociologie d’abord à l’Université Laval puis, en 1960, il accepte le poste de directeur du Département de sociologie à l’Université de Montréal, dont il est toujours membre du corps professoral. Depuis 1983, il est aussi chercheur au Centre de recherche en droit public de cette même université. Il a été membre de la commission Parent (1961-1966), sous-ministre au Développement culturel (1977-1979) et au ministère du Développement social (1981-1983) du Gouvernement du Québec. Les moustiquaires imprégnées de pyréthrinoïdes constituent l’un des outils préventifs dans cette lutte : leur utilisation est simple et permet une protection individuelle et collective durable et accessible à tous. Cependant, depuis plus de dix ans, Anopheles gambiae, le principal vecteur du paludisme en Afrique, est devenu résistant à de nombreux insecticides. Cette résistance pose des questions d’ordre fondamental et opérationnel : le comportement des moustiques s’en trouve-t-il modifié ? Cette résistance s'accompagne-t-elle d'une réduction significative de l'efficacité des moustiquaires imprégnées ? À travers la synthèse de travaux de recherche réalisés tant en laboratoire que sur le terrain, cet ouvrage révèle pourquoi les moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticides resteront, pendant longtemps encore, une arme indispensable dans la lutte contre le paludisme.

    Description: Le terme et l'idée de « philosophies de la nature » paraissent renvoyer, strictement et précisément, aux temps et aux œuvres de l'ère postkantienne en Allemagne. Du coup, le concept pourrait en sembler à première vue périmé. Tout se passe comme si l'on avait à faire ici à un chapitre de l'histoire des idées qui serait irrémédiablement antérieur à celui (censément plus récent et plus essentiel) des « philosophies de l'histoire ». Les quelque cinquante contributions réunies dans ce livre tentent de faire ressortir, au contraire, la très grande actualité d'une étude portant sur les « philosophies de la nature ». - L'histoire, au demeurant, est singulièrement mise en question en ces dernières années du XXe siècle, - ce qui met en cause la philosophie de l'histoire en général et ses différentes versions, et du coup encore leur rapport aux philosophies de la nature. En outre, le développement des sciences de la nature ne cesse aujourd'hui de poser (et pas seulement en les reposant) nombre de problèmes philosophiques, tant pratiques que théoriques. La première journée, celle du 20 mars 1994, sous la responsabilité de Paolo Quintili, rassemblait les contributions portant sur la période « de la Renaissance à l'âge classique ». La deuxième, sous la responsabilité de Françoise Dastur, était consacrée le 27 mars aux contributions centrées sur « Kant et l'idéalisme allemand ». C'est sur « Le XIXe siècle » en général qu'a porté la troisième journée, celle du 27 novembre 1994, placée sous la responsabilité d'Hélène Politis. La dernière, sous la responsabilité de Jacques Moutaux, abordait enfin le 4 décembre un large ensemble de questions posées par « Les philosophies de la nature aujourd'hui ».

    Description: Concerns relating to energy supply and climate change have driven renewable energy targets around the world. Marine renewable energy could make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the consequences of climate change, while providing a high-technology industry. The conversion of wave and tidal energy into electricity has many advantages. Individual tidal and wave energy devices have been installed and proven, with commercial arrays planned throughout the world. The wave and tidal energy industry has developed rapidly in the past few years; therefore, it seems timely to review current research and map future challenges. Methods to improve understanding of the resource and interactions (between energy extraction, the resource and the environment) are considered, such as resource characterisation (including electricity output), design considerations (e.g., extreme and fatigue loadings) and environmental impacts, at all timescales (ranging from turbulence to decadal) and all spatial scales (from device and array scales to shelf sea scales).

    Description: Processing and storage can cause changes and interactions in food components that have effects on nutritional value, organoleptic characteristics or even food safety. This book includes 19 research works showing important and interesting advances, as well as new approaches, in this research topic. Four articles are dedicated to studying the effect of canning conditions (filling media and some ingredients) on the diverse parameters of quality for fish and pet foods. Three articles are devoted to studying the effects of dehydration (pre-treatments and drying procedures). One article is dedicated to monitoring the elaboration of a fermented and dehydrated product (sausage) using a portable NIRS device. The ninth article of this book studies the effect of low-dose electron beam irradiation on cooking quality, moisture migration, and thermodynamics, as well as the digestion properties of the isolated starches in newly harvested and dried rice. The next contribution studies the use of different preservatives to avoid the formation of undesirable volatile organic compounds in stracciatella cheese. Another article examines the impact of source material, kibble size, temperature, and duration on the efficiency of the aqueous extraction of sugars and phenolics from carob kibbles by conventional heat-assisted (HAE) and ultrasound-assisted (UAE) methods. In two articles, marinating with different extracts, alone or combined with other seasoning/conditioning methods, was essayed to tenderize beef or to improve the sensory quality of chicken leg and breast meat. The effect of various cooking methods on the quality, structure, pasting, water distribution and protein oxidation of fish and meat-based snacks is studied in the fourteenth article. The last five articles are dedicated to the study of the effects of storage on several foods (olive oil, blueberry, beetroot and Atlantic mackerel).

    Description: This book is motivated by our passion to compile recent research on antimicrobial surfaces. We aimed to assemble research papers on the preparation of new materials, antimicrobial testing using different pathogens (bacteria, fungi, and viruses), and the relationship between the coating nanostructure and its reactivity towards the studied pathogen(s). We believe that a good antimicrobial coating should by characterized by (i) a fast activity towards the pathogen, (ii) sustainable activity based on the stability of the coating, and (iii) the lowest possible toxicity for humans and reduced risks for the environment. Striking a compromise between these different challenges is difficult and requires more research.

Organisée à Strasbourg, avec le soutien efficace du Strasbourg Université Club, elle a largement profité du rayonnement international de la Cité, en étant accueillie au Centre Européen de la Jeunesse et en ouvrant ses séquences d'analyse, de présentation d'expériences novatrices et de débats à des compétences européennes de premier plan. « Le sport, c'est la santé » : ce type d'adage à la vie opère comme un écran de fumée par rapport à la réflexion et à la valorisation d'une action cohérente, d'autant que les termes de sport et de santé recouvrent chacun des notions différentes et pas toujours complémentaires. Comment renouer avec l'éducation sportive - chez l'athlète assidu comme chez des pratiquants ayant une simple activité d'entretien physique - sinon en remettant à l'ordre du jour l'examen des interactions dynamiques entre sport et santé ? « Sport et santé » composent une question majeure posée à et par une société plus que jamais marquée par la sédentarité, le vieillissement de la population et des inégalités socio-économiques persistantes. A l'occasion de cette USE, chercheurs universitaires, enseignants d'EPS, éducateurs et dirigeants sportifs, élus politiques et acteurs administratifs, journalistes, porteurs de projets ont pu se montrer à la hauteur des enjeux en ébauchant des orientations pertinentes.

    Description: Anthropogenic and natural disturbances to freshwater quantity and quality are a greater issue for society than ever before. To successfully restore water resources requires understanding the interactions between hydrology, climate, land use, water quality, ecology, and social and economic pressures. This Special Issue of Water includes cutting edge research broadly addressing investigative areas related to experimental study designs and modeling, freshwater pollutants of concern, and human dimensions of water use and management. Results demonstrate the immense, globally transferable value of the experimental watershed approach, the relevance and critical importance of current integrated studies of pollutants of concern, and the imperative to include human sociological and economic processes in water resources investigations. In spite of the latest progress, as demonstrated in this Special Issue, managers remain insufficiently informed to make the best water resource decisions amidst combined influences of land use change, rapid ongoing human population growth, and changing environmental conditions.     Description: During cell metabolism, oxygen is partially reduced to reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a physiological role in cellular processes. However, an imbalance between the production of ROS and the ability of defenses to detoxify the organism provokes oxidative stress. Oxidative stress and its subsequent damages to vital cellular components have been associated with numerous severe chronic disorders. In addition, oxidation reactions are responsible for food deterioration during processing and storage. Peptides from animal and vegetal food sources have attracted attention due to the large evidence of their in vitro antioxidant properties. In addition to their potential as safer alternatives to synthetic antioxidants used to prevent oxidative reactions in foods, antioxidant peptides can also act by reducing the risk of numerous oxidative stress-associated diseases. Furthermore, peptides can act synergistically with nonpeptide antioxidants, enhancing their protective effect. This Special Issue of the Foods journal includes outstanding papers illustrating examples of the most recent advances on antioxidant peptides from both vegetal and animal sources. The existing data on their bioactivities demonstrated by in silico, in vitro, and animal models are included as well as the mechanisms of action of identified antioxidant peptides.

    Description: En Aquitaine, première région vitivinicole française, la vigne est présente sur la majeure partie des territoires, et la filière, avec ses exploitations en Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, ses caves coopératives et ses maisons de négoce, constitue une forte composante de l'économie régionale. Les grands crus sont les principaux référents pour l'image des vins aquitains et tirent vers le haut l'ensemble du vignoble, et cependant les vins de Bordeaux occultent la diversité et la richesse des vins aquitains, ce qui nuit à une image de l'Aquitaine comme pays du vin. Vignobles et vins en Aquitaine s'attache à étudier ce paradoxe. La première partie, dans une synthèse de nombreux écrits de recherche, explique comment les histoires agraire, économique et humaine de la région ont fait du vin une spécificité aquitaine, inscrite dans les paysages et les sociétés, et évalue le rôle de la « place de Bordeaux ». La seconde partie propose des éclairages plus circonstanciés, regroupés en deux thèmes : les facteurs et marqueurs de la construction des territoires viticoles constituent un premier axe d'étude, suivi par les représentations et la défense de l'image qui forment un second champ. Les territoires viticoles aquitains sont des constructions sociales complexes, génératrices d'une identité forte et porteuse. Cet ouvrage a été réalisé par la collaboration d'historiens, géographes, économistes ou œnologues au sein de la MSHA et dans le cadre de programmes pluridisciplinaires du CERVIN (composante de l'UMR ADES). Il soulève des problématiques telles que l'articulation entre société et terroir, les effets déformants du système AOC ou les logiques territoriales « de clocher » qui ont perturbé la création d'une identité régionale. Les recherches de ces différents auteurs nous permettent de comprendre comment les viticulteurs aquitains ont été en mesure de maintenir une production que le monde entier envie encore malgré la crise.

Descartes forge pour l’expliquer une « fable » que Doatéa Nuri prend ici décidément au sérieux. Les tribulations, les hésitations, les atermoiements, les incapacités dont font état le Discours de la méthode ou les Méditations métaphysiques sont imputés par elle non à Descartes, mais à un narrateur qu’elle nomme l’Incertain et dont elle brosse le portrait philosophique. Non sans conséquences importantes pour la philosophie elle-même. Car l’incertitude, autre nom de la neutralité, ou de l’anonymat, caractérise aussi bien « l’espace littéraire ». Cette lecture de Descartes, qui cite Blanchot, Deleuze, Foucault, mais fait aussi songer, quand l’Incertain se fait Barbare ou Arpenteur, au Michaux de Plume, ouvre à la pensée un champ illimité, vertigineux, dans lequel la neutralité, virtuellement universelle, est susceptible d’affecter des textes de tous ordres, sans souci d’aucune autorité. L’incertitude n’est pas seulement une hypothèse paradoxale formulée à propos du philosophe réputé le plus clair et le plus assuré ; elle est peut-être la condition de toute pensée.

Cette expertise collégiale menée par l’IRD, réalisée par une quinzaine de chercheurs à la demande du ministère de la Santé du Mali et de l’Institut d’ophtalmologie tropicale d’Afrique (Mali), s’attache à décrire l’état actuel de la lutte contre cette conjonctivite cécitante d’origine infectieuse. En dressant le bilan des stratégies déjà à l’œuvre, notamment celle du programme CHANCE de l’OMS, cette expertise cherche à définir les conditions et les perspectives de cette maladie.

    Description: As an important tool of systems biology, proteomics has enabled a deep understanding of different plant processes and functions. Complemented with genomic data, computational tools, and improved sample preparation strategies, proteomics has an unprecedented opportunity to characterize plant proteoforms in high spatial and temporal resolution. This special issue of Plant Proteomic Research 4.0 captures the recent advancements in proteomics and addresses the current challenges of plant stress response and resilience in the ever-changing climate. It contains 12 articles, including three reviews and nine original research articles. The three reviews deal with pollen phosphoproteomics, starch biosynthesis-related proteins and posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in rice developing seeds, and PTMs of waxy proteins in rice grain. The nine research articles include three related to temperature, two on water stress, two on salt stress, one on fungal pathogen, and the last one on field-grown potato apoplast proteome. The articles reflect the current frontiers of plant proteomics, focusing on themes of environmental stresses, proteoforms/PTMs, crop species, and new development in data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry. They provide readers insights into current technologies, their utility in understanding plant growth and resilience, as well as directions of proteomics in the frontiers of systems biology and synthetic biology.

    Description: In recent years, inorganic oxidic nanomaterials have been extensively investigated for their outstanding properties that allow their use within a large variety of raising fields of interest, ranging from (photo)catalysis to the development of functional nanocomposites. Nanoscopic metal (eventually mixed) oxides are often fabricated following soft-chemistry approaches, characterized by the possibility of favouring specific morphologies, particles dimensions, and surface porosities through different synthetic methods and templating processes. In this context, surface functionalities and reactivity play a major role in the determination of nanomaterials final properties. For this reason, further surface functionalization with specific chemical moieties is often recommended to extend their field of application. This Special Issue, now edited as a book, aimed at extending the comprehension of the mechanisms involved in the synthesis and templating of inorganic oxidic nanomaterials, as well as in their surface functionalization and reactivity. Additionally, this Special Issue aimed at increasing the knowledge on the latest advances of these systems in (photo)catalysis, environmental clean-up processes, energy storage, controlled transport and/or release, biomedicine, sensing, development of smart-materials, stimuli-responsive materials, and nanocomposites.     Description: In 2015, the United Nations decided to establish the goal of achieving “zero hunger” in the world by 2030 through “outcome targets” such as eliminating hunger and improving access to food, ending all forms of malnutrition, promoting sustainable and resilient agriculture, and maintaining genetic diversity in food production. As a result of this decision, strategies are under way in different countries around the world in the form of political, academic, development, and non-governmental organization projects and programs. Five years later, these strategies have certainly generated results that need to be documented and analyzed so as to answer the following questions: what are the progress and success stories in terms of policies, innovations, technologies, and approaches to reach the zero hunger goal? What are the constraints and mitigation strategies? Are we really in a phase of transition towards the zero hunger goal? What new directions do we need to consider to achieve this goal, particularly in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which affects all sectors of development around the world? This book volume will be published within MDPI’s new open access book series entitled “Transitioning to Sustainability”. It welcomes contributions of empirical research, position pieces, and presentations of important research programs or stakeholder initiatives that cover any of the four “outcome targets” of the zero hunger goal. The contributions may come from academics, students, and policy makers of any region in the world and may be related to specific disciplines or be inter and/or transdisciplinary. They may cover areas including but not limited to sustainable improvement of food production, implementing sustainable food and farming systems, improving access to food, limiting malnutrition, limiting food loss and food waste and, finally, global analyses of the challenges of reaching zero hunger in relation to other sustainable development goals as well as success stories on projects, programmes or government initiatives. Transitioning to Zero Hunger is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. Set to be published in 2020/2021, the book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries.

Ils ont également joué un rôle éminent dans le domaine scientifique, leurs contributions allant des sciences « dures » (mathématiques et physique, avec Henri Poincaré, chimie avec Henry Le Chatelier) à l’économie, avec Maurice Allais, le seul Français ayant reçu le prix Nobel d’économie, et aussi la sociologie, avec Frédéric Le Play, considéré comme l’un des précurseurs de cette discipline. Industriel dans son essence, industrialiste dans son esprit, ce corps de fonctionnaires a souvent adopté des approches libérales, mais, a contrario, il a souvent impulsé un patriotisme économique de bon aloi dans le cadre de « grands programmes » d’État. Il restait à la richesse de cette expérience, à la fois technique, scientifique et administrative, à se constituer en histoire, à se « conscientiser ». Telle était l’ambition du colloque dont les actes sont présentés dans ce volume. Organisé dans le cadre de la célébration du deux centième anniversaire du décret du 18 novembre 1810 qui a organisé le « Corps impérial des Ingénieurs des Mines », ce colloque historique s’est attaché à mettre en lumière le rôle joué au service de la France par ces hauts fonctionnaires à formation scientifique et technique.

    Description: The sustainability of water resources worldwide is increasingly imperiled as climate change contributes to the human-induced problems of water supply scarcity and maldistribution. Environmental problems associated with water quality, such as aquifer depletion, land subsidence, the seasonal drying of river flows, waterlogging, the salinization of rivers and groundwater, and human health problems from the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides will require a radical re-thinking of resource-management policy and new tools to help analysts and regulators craft novel solutions. Over the past several decades, with the advent and rapid progress of computational technology, watershed models have increasingly become important and effective tools for tackling a wide range of water resource and environmental management issues and for supporting regulatory compliance. Statistical and machine-learning methods are being used to support and even supplant more traditional simulation models to improve the estimation of the temporal dynamics and patterns of variability in pollutant concentrations and loads. With the advancements in modeling approaches for water quality, there have also been developments in decision-support tools for water quality management. This reprint describes innovative decision-support approaches from around the world and across sectors that can be applied by stakeholders, government entities, and regulators to reduce environmental pollution and result in cost-effective and sustainable water management strategies.

This volume of the Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability book series aims to offer inspiration and creativity on approaches to sustainable development. Among other things, it covers topics of COVID-19 and sustainability, environmental pollution, food production, clean energy, low-carbon transport promotion, and strategic governance for sustainable initiatives. This book can reveal facts about the challenges we are facing on the one hand and provide a better understanding of drivers, barriers, and motivations to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all on the other. De plus elle reprend des questions qui étaient au cœur de la théorie durkeimienne de la connaissance, celle par exemple des croyances collectives, ou l'idée d'un sujet collectif du savoir. Par là elle se rapproche des social studies of science, tout en s'en distinguant par l'adoption d'un point de vue normatif et par le refus du relativisme. Ce volume présente un ensemble de recherches représentatives de ces différentes préoccupations. Elles ont en commun de reconnaître la spécificité de l'idée de normes de la connaissance, et, s'agissant de concevoir la dimension sociale de celle-ci, de se garder des formes radicales de holisme, pour lesquelles les groupes sociaux sont des entités sui generis.

    Description: In 2020-2022, much of the world was at risk for catching COVID-19. This reprint, “Crimmigration in the Age of COVID-19,” contributes to understanding immigration during the pandemic. It engages a cross-national and interdisciplinary case-study approach to show how countries carved out exceptions to public health protocols for migrants. In the immigration context a variety of governments weaponized public health protocols to criminalize and exclude migrants. The Trump Administration sadistically misplayed the pandemic at almost every turn. Trump came to power on the backs of migrants, referring to them as murderers and rapists. The intersection of Trump’s COVID-19 and migration policies carved out space for the exceptional dehumanization of migrants in 2020-21. This reprint documents the weaponization of public through crimmigration. Crimmigration is the criminalization of migration and migrants via state-of-the-art surveillance and militarized technologies. During the worst of COVID-19, crimmigration strategies--mandatory detention and harsh exclusions— exacerbated the risk of transmission among migrants. Policies not migrants were to blame here. The ostensibly public health related Title42 actually pushed migrants, already at great risk, into unregulated shantytowns controlled by Mexican drug cartels. Additionally, migrants contended with detention facilities, medium security prisons, that functioned as Petrie dishes for the disease. We hope this reprint contributes to understanding the intersection of public health and crimmigration, and border penologies during these exceptional times.

    Description: C’est sur un espace utilisé depuis la fin du ixe siècle, occupé aux environs de l’an mil par une étonnante construction de bois à sol de béton et à vocation funéraire, que s’implante au xiie siècle la nouvelle cuisine de l’abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus. Lié au réfectoire voisin, le bâtiment empiète à l’époque sur des niveaux de circulation extérieure. Sa conception architecturale est ambitieuse, avec un plan centré sur un octogone entouré de vastes cheminées à contrecœur semi-circulaire qui évoque des modèles de l’ouest de la France - disparus pour la plupart, à l’exception ou presque de la cuisine de Fontevraud en Anjou. Toutefois, au contraire de ces exemples connus uniquement pour leur architecture, c’est la conservation en place des dépôts d’utilisation intérieurs, compressés à force d’accumulation et de piétinements, qui fait la richesse du spécimen tournusien, illustrant de façon saisissante le quotidien de cette cuisine jusqu’au milieu du xvie siècle. Pendant quatre siècles, c’est autour de grandes langues de cendres témoignant d’une cuisson dans la braise, étalées depuis les quatre foyers jusqu’au milieu de la pièce, que se concentre l’essentiel de l’activité. Les postes de préparation sont trahis par autant de tas de déchets spécialisés : coquilles d’œufs, fragments d’os, écailles de poisson… Une conduite d’eau et un drain de pierres traversent la pièce, portiques ou paravents de bois sont déplacés sans cesse. La permanence de déchets de consommation carnée sur le même site depuis la fin du ixe siècle, l’abondance des restes de poisson dans la cuisine, permettent de retracer l’évolution de l’approvisionnement et de l’alimentation des moines et de leurs familiers laïcs. Quant aux nombreux fragments de poteries, également présents depuis les premiers niveaux, ils offrent sur huit siècles, avec d’autres sites tournusiens, un référentiel de productions en usage dans la région. À cela s’ajoutent quelques restes d’ustensiles en métal, verre ou pierre, tels cette probable tête de robinet des xiie/xiiie siècles ou ce mortier décoré du xive, retrouvé cassé au fond d’une cheminée : ils éclairent, plus ponctuellement, d’autres aspects de la préparation culinaire ou du service de la table. De tout point de vue, en plein contexte monastique, le matériel recueilli trahit les usages d’une population aristocratique. Tels sont les apports d’une fouille minutieuse à l’emplacement de cet édifice crucial de l’abbaye médiévale, un peu oublié à Tournus depuis sa destruction au xviie siècle, mais ressuscité par cet ouvrage finement documenté.

Les booms de l’hévéaculture diffèrent significativement de part et d’autre de la frontière, mais ils sont également étroitement liés dans le contexte d’une intégration régionale des filières et des territoires qui se renforce. Cette transformation est impulsée par le jeu des marchés globalisés et de puissants acteurs étrangers tels que la Chine et la Malaisie, mais les gouvernements nationaux jouent également un rôle important en matière d’accès et d’usage des terres agricoles. L’or blanc et les nouveaux eldorados ne sont pas qu’un enjeu économique ; sont également en jeu les influences et les rapports de force entre les pays de la sous-région du Grand Mékong, à l’image des importantes transactions foncières transnationales. Pour mieux comprendre la transition agraire actuelle impulsée par le boom de l’hévéa, les auteurs de cet ouvrage ont tenu à revenir sur l’histoire, l’époque de la colonisation européenne et les expériences socialistes.     Description: Retraites des salariés intermittents des spectacles : plus de bénéficiaires pour des pensions moins importantes au fil des générations Près de 14 000 retraités des spectacles perçoivent aujourd’hui une pension de retraite au terme d’un parcours professionnel marqué par l’intermittence. Depuis 1989, le nombre de retraités des spectacles a fortement progressé, suivant en cela l’évolution des effectifs intermittents au cours des trente dernières années. Les intermittents des spectacles dépendent du régime général pour leur retraite de base et disposent d’une retraite complémentaire, servie par Audiens. Les retraités des spectacles prennent en moyenne leur retraite à 62 ans, et l’immense majorité d’entre eux (93 %) bénéficient d’une pension de retraite générale à taux plein. En 2009, le montant annuel moyen de la pension totale versée aux anciens salariés intermittents des spectacles est de 18 180 euros, soit 1 520 euros mensuels. Le montant moyen des pensions totales diminue, du fait de l’érosion des retraites de base et complémentaires dont le montant baisse à mesure que les flux d’entrée en jouissance de la retraite se succèdent. Un nouveau retraité de 2009 touche ainsi une pension inférieure de 10 % à celle d’un nouveau retraité de 1999. La baisse de la pension de base s’explique essentiellement par la diminution du salaire annuel de référence servant de base au calcul de son montant. Les retraites complémentaires, gérées par des institutions différentes selon la catégorie professionnelle (Agirc pour les cadres, Arcco pour les artistes et non cadres) évoluent de façon plus contrastée. Si elles diminuent globalement, elles s’améliorent pour certaines catégories comme les artistes, jouant ainsi un effet compensateur de la baisse de la pension de base. Enfin, l’évolution des retraites sur vingt ans révèle de profondes inégalités non seulement intergénérationnelles mais aussi interprofessionnelles et de genre : les retraites totales des artistes et des non-cadres ayant pris leur retraite en 2009 sont inférieures de près de 13 000 euros annuels à celles des cadres. En outre, les femmes intermittentes des spectacles partent généralement à la retraite un peu plus tard que les hommes et touchent des pensions d’un montant inférieur, ce qui reflète des différences de carrières salariales défavorables aux femmes. On relève toutefois une réduction des inégalités de genre à la retraite, liées davantage à une dégradation des pensions des hommes qu’à une amélioration de celles des femmes.

Il les a considérées avec un regard attentif et critique, soucieux de tracer un chemin singulier mais désireux de s’inscrire dans une tradition de pensée philosophique spécifique et exigeante. La réception de son œuvre pose question : encensée dans les années 1950, elle s’est progressivement réduite en France, notamment vers les années 1970, alors qu’elle fait l’objet aujourd’hui d’un regain d’intérêt. L’étude entend montrer que de telles fluctuations sont liées au malentendu qui fait de Dufrenne l’auteur d’un seul livre, la Phénoménologie de l’expérience esthétique,qui à lui seul ne rend pas compte de l’originalité de sa pensée. Lire Dufrenne, c’est découvrir l’importance de sa réflexion éthique et politique et la stabilité d’une pensée dédiée à la défense des valeurs de « l’humain » et de « l’homme ». C’est aussi se livrer au plaisir de l’élaboration de fictions philosophiques répondant à la tentation de rationaliser une vision du monde par le biais d’une philosophie de la Nature relayée par la notion d’a priori.     Description: This chapter will, first, reconstructs Axel Honneth’s account of the significance of recognition in his book The Struggle for Recognition and track some of the unresolved tensions in it and their role in Honneth’s subsequent work. The final part of the chapter focusses on Honneth’s more recent monograph The Freedom’s Right, in which an oscillation of his position between universalism and historicism or relativism pauses in the latter end. This limits the applicability of the theory outside the confines of Europe or the West. It turns out that the reconstruction and immanent critique of Honneth’s work, however, supports recognition-theoretical universalism.

Si sa démarche phénoménologique héritée de Husserl le conduit immanquablement à s’interroger sur la place singulière que l’objet esthétique occupe dans notre monde, son projet est plus ambitieux. L’attention que Mikel Dufrenne porte aux différents arts (les arts plastiques, la musique, la poésie) ainsi qu’à la richesse des expériences esthétiques vécues, décrites et commentées, lui permet en effet de viser un but supérieur : non seulement redéfinir et réorganiser la phénoménologie autour de la question de l’art, mais faire de l’œuvre ce qui permet de remonter vers un principe originaire, la Nature, qui fonde toute création. Cette tâche singulière et méconnue méritait bien un effort philosophique collectif dont le présent ouvrage est le fruit.

    Description: This Special Issue explored different topics concerning recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of suitable innovative macromolecular systems, proposed as carriers of specific antimicrobial molecules, to be employed in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. Many infectious diseases are induced by omnipresent micro-organisms, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, and algae, and, consequently, are very common, accounting for a significant share of the global disease burden. Unfortunately, antimicrobial resistance, adverse effects, and the high cost of antimicrobials are crucial health challenges worldwide. One of the common efforts in addressing this issue lies in improving the existing antimicrobial delivery systems. In this regard, nanoparticles as well as three-dimensional hydrophilic systems represent valuable tools able to ensure excellent performances. Biocompatible polymeric particles, entrapping these bioactive molecules, are capable of releasing them over a desired period of time, thereby decreasing the frequency of their administration. At the same time, these systems are able to protect antimicrobial drugs from degradation, enhancing their bioavailability. This Special Issue serves to highlight and capture the contemporary progress recorded in this field.

    Description: The idea of improvisation, broadly defined, has been integral to our imagination of the medieval musical past. It can be related to many elements of production: to the act of un-notated creation; to the manipulation and amplification of notated materials; to our observance of rigid rules and formulae; or to spontaneous freedom. Likely a product of the Carolingian Renaissance, this is the first medieval music treatise to address an aspect of chant performance that does not only relate to a memorized repertoire, but includes an unwritten practice of extemporizing an accompanying voice to a pre-given melody. The art of “coloration” or the ornamentation of a line, whether polyphonic or monophonic, had been an integral part of extemporization since at least the time of the Ad organum faciendum treatises. When planning author's ontological inquiries, the author's would do well to remember the possible existence of creativity that is not inspired, or ephemerality that is not performer- or expression-centered.

    Description: Reflections on God, Christ and cosmos in the writings of Paul and the Pauline School show that these authors were familiar with important notions from Graeco-Roman cosmology and theology. George van Kooten comes to the conclusion that they might even have adopted a way of thinking in which Judaism and Graeco-Roman cosmology were forged into a new synthesis, and Christ was viewed as a cosmic god. In this development, Paul and the authors of the Pauline School took up various positions which were all represented in contemporary discussions about God and cosmos in the philosophical schools. Against this background this study also sheds new light on the specific relationship between Colossians and Ephesians.

    Description: August Ludwig Hülsen (1765-1809) was a contributor to the emergence of German idealism. Notwithstanding, his name and works are up to this day almost entirely unknown to most scholars in the field. This monograph discusses the historical importance of Hülsen's Prüfung der von der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin aufgestellten Preisfrage: Was hat die Metaphysik seit Leibniz und Wolf für Progressen gemacht? (1796), his only book, for the emergence of German idealism, especially the thought of Reinhold and Fichte during the 1790's. The usual way of focusing on the Wissenschaftslehre, and hence, on the emergence of German idealism, is as a “response” of Fichte to the skeptical objections of Schulze-Aenesidemus to Reinhold's early Elementarphilosophie. This “response”, as Fichte himself recognized in 1798, was far from complete. Hülsen, a Fichtean thinker, restructured and regrounded those aspects of Reinhold's system that Fichte left intact: in particular, Reinhold's almost forgotten approach to the rational history of philosophy. In 1797, Hülsen's achievement prompted Fichte's recommendation of Hülsen's book in Annalen des philosophischen Tons as an introduction to his Wissenschaftslehre. This indicates that Fichte recognized Hülsen as a partner in the development of his incomplete system. Accordingly, the historical importance of Hülsen's book is that it completed Fichte's attempt to overcome Reinhold's standpoint and contributed to the emergence of German idealism.

    Description: The diversity of wood and non-wood forest products is enormous and reflected in their anatomical, physical and chemical properties as well as their potential applications. Special attention should be given to lesser-known species and even to invasive species, which may be profitable when properly managed, thereby decreasing the overexploitation of threatened species. Besides the market importance of stem wood, other tree components and non-wood forest products, often regarded simply as forest residual materials, are valuable forest resources with various potential applications that can strengthen the circular economy. Assessing the characteristics of these diverse materials, such as their structure and anatomy as well as their physical and chemical properties, is fundamental for evaluating their potential and increasing high-quality end-uses.     Description: New scientific advances in different areas have allowed the design of more precise strategies for the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders through nutrition. In this context emerges the term Precision Nutrition, a new approach that takes advantage of scientific knowledge about the interaction of internal and external environmental factors to develop dynamic and precise nutritional recommendations. Therefore, Precision Nutrition includes personalized advice based on genetics and well-documented gene–nutrient–phenotype interactions, as well as other factors such as individual metabolome, transcriptome, and microbiota profile; food behavior; and dietary, physical activity, and life-style habits; and the resulting interactomes. Precision Nutrition should be based at least on three sequential steps: conventional nutritional approaches (considering age, gender, and physiological states); the incorporation of nutritional and health status information (e.g., metabolites, physical and nutritional behavior); and the genetic baggage including multiomics functional integration.

    Description: La première édition de La Naissance du paradigme herméneutique remonte à 1990. Depuis, la discussion autour de l’histoire de l’herméneutique et des enjeux qui lui sont liés tant du côté de la philosophie que des sciences interprétatives s’est considérablement développée. L’objet de cette seconde édition n’est pas de prendre position dans ce débat. Le volume reste conçu comme un recueil de matériaux devant faciliter la réévaluation du moment où la théorie herméneutique, à la fin du xviiie siècle, subit un changement d’orientation radical, dont l’un des principaux effets est de rendre possible le développement des sciences humaines ou de la culture. Aux douze contributions primitives, qui traitent de F. Schleiermacher, F. Schlegel, W. von Humboldt, A. Boeckh et de G. Droysen, deux nouveaux textes ont été ajoutés, l’un, en amont, sur Kant, l’autre, en aval, sur W. Dilthey. Denis Thouard a également écrit une postface qui replace l’ensemble des contributions dans le cadre de la discussion actuelle, et fournit ainsi au lecteur la possibilité de s’y orienter. La conviction présidant à cette collection d’études est double : d’une part, qu’il existe bien entre l’herméneutique du xviie siècle et le nouveau paradigme herméneutique une discontinuité fondamentale, d’autre part, que les notions de « méthode » et d’« objectivation », mobilisées par H.-G. Gadamer pour définir mais aussi pour discréditer les ambitions de la nouvelle herméneutique, ne permettent d’en comprendre ni l’histoire, ni les enjeux, ni peut-être et avant tout les ressources.

    Description: La publication en 2013 d'une version reconstruite du texte de Kracauer Die totalitäre Propaganda (1937-1938) a renouvelé la perception que l’on pouvait avoir de cette dimension de son œuvre et de son apport à une « théorie critique de la propagande ». La réflexion sur la propagande s’inscrit dans le contexte plus vaste de l’élaboration par les exilés allemands, au tournant des années 1930-1940, d’une grille de lecture du national-socialisme, vu comme une pathologie de la modernité, ainsi que dans celui des grands projets de recherches américains sur la propagande nazie (auxquels Adorno et Kracauer ont été associés). Au sein de la nébuleuse de la « Théorie critique » Kracauer exprime, comme Benjamin, un point de vue à certains égards dissonant. À rebours d’une approche qui insiste surtout sur la continuité entre capitalisme et nazisme, il se montre particulièrement sensible à la séduction esthétique du fascisme, et à sa mise en scène d’une réalité de substitution, qui est selon lui l’expression d’une fuite en avant nihiliste : ses analyses concrètes ne portent pas tant sur les contenus du message que sur le langage même de la propagande, et la vision de la société et de l’histoire qu’elle véhicule, dans sa forme même. Le débat complexe qui se développe à cette époque entre Adorno, Benjamin et Kracauer met notamment en œuvre les catégories de « fétichisme » (Adorno), de « fantasmagorie » et d’« esthétisation du politique » (Benjamin), d’« apparence » et de « pseudo-réalité » (Kracauer). Il présente en premier lieu un intérêt historique, en tant que l’analyse du nazisme constitue pour le projet d’une théorie critique une mise à l’épreuve, qui suscite de vifs débats internes et aboutit chez Adorno et Horkheimer, dans la Dialectique de la raison (1944-1947), à une reformulation de ce projet. Mais dans un contexte aujourd’hui bien différent, les thèmes qui sont débattus entre ces protagonistes, comme celui de la dérive autoritaire du libéralisme, des manipulations de masse, de la construction médiatique du réel n’ont rien perdu de leur actualité.

    Description: Dans le cadre d’une réflexion plus large, menée depuis quelques années, sur le statut et la fonction des sites d’habitat hallstattiens du Nord-Est de la France, il a paru indispensable d’accéder à une meilleure approche comparative de la chronologie des sites, en même temps qu’à une meilleure caractérisation de leur niveau économique et de leurs activités, par le biais de la catégorie de mobilier archéologique la plus largement commune à tous les sites d’habitat protohistoriques : la céramique. Du fait des disparités constatées dans le niveau d’étude de la céramique de chaque site, la comparaison s’avérait a priori difficile, et il a donc fallu mettre au point un système descriptif et analytique normalisé, dans lequel puissent s’intégrer, malgré leur diversité, les données relatives aux corpus céramiques de tous nos gisements. Le choix s’est porté, pour chaque région, sur les corpus les mieux documentés ou les plus représentatifs pour chacune des phases. Les sites retenus correspondent presque tous à des fouilles récentes et ont été explorés pour la plupart dans le cadre d’opérations préventives. Un peu moins de quarante sites ont ainsi été recensés. Même s’il n’a pas l’ambition de se constituer comme un répertoire intégral du matériel céramique du premier Âge du Fer en Alsace et Lorraine, l’ouvrage que nous présentons doit permettre un accès rapide et facile à l’évolution morphologique et technique du mobilier et à la datation des sites. Nous proposons donc dans un premier temps une analyse des tendances évolutives, forme par forme, ainsi qu’une étude de l’évolution des décors. Nous tentons ensuite un bilan par grandes phases chronologiques (BF IIIb, Ha C, Ha D1, Ha D2-D3, LT A) et par régions, qui s’achève par un commentaire raisonné sur l’évolution de la céramique, ses grandes innovations, ses grandes césures, ainsi que sur la possibilité de mieux caractériser des faciès culturels régionaux.

    Description: Eating Disorders have traditionally been considered apart from public health concerns about increasing obesity. It is evident that these problems are, however, related in important ways. Comorbid obesity and eating disorder is increasing at a faster rate than either obesity or eating disorders alone and one in five people with obesity also presents with an Eating Disorder, commonly but not limited to Binge Eating Disorder. New disorders have emerged such as normal weight or Atypical Anorexia Nervosa. However research and practice too often occurs in parallel with a failure to understand the weight disorder spectrum and consequences of co-morbidity that then contributes to poorer outcomes for people living with a larger size and an Eating Disorder. Urgently needed are trials that will inform more effective assessment, treatment and care where body size and eating disorder symptoms are both key to the research question.

    Description: “Chapter 6” systematizes and analyzes Kierkegaard’s insightful remarks on human affectivity in relation to moral emotions, body, contagion, and collectivity. Following a brief outline of the conceptualization of affects and human affectivity from Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Tomkins, and Massumi, the first part zooms in on empathy and sympathy in two important precursors of Kierkegaard, namely David Hume and Adam Smith. The second part argues for Kierkegaard’s distinctively affective reading of admiration, which I locate in its being fundamentally linked with other emotions such as envy, but also in its being oriented toward the mediocre and base, having a limited motivational capacity, and being highly contagious. Affective admiration is then related to the contemporary discussion on moral exemplars, posing a challenge to the view of the epistemological and moral trustworthiness of admiration in moral exemplarity espoused primarily by Linda Zagzebski. The third part centers on the affective character of Kierkegaard’s crowd psychology. Therein I examine his critical remarks on human collectivity, focusing on such key concepts from his social and political philosophy as “crowd” and “the public.” Reading his philosophy alongside two French theorists of mass society, Gabriel Tarde and René Girard, I draw out Kierkegaard’s great interest in such mimetic terms as magnetism, fascination, somnambulism, scapegoating, and violence.

    Description: Les nécropoles de l’ancienne Kition (sous la ville moderne de Larnaca) ont fait l’objet de nombreuses fouilles depuis le xixe siècle : aux recherches d’antiquités ont succédé des fouilles d’urgence, sans qu’aucune exploration toutefois n’ait pu se faire de façon programmée, avec les méthodes de l’analyse stratigraphique et anthropologique. Entre 2012 et 2014, la mission archéologique de Kition a conduit des fouilles systématiques dans une des nécropoles de l’âge du Fer de la ville, au lieu-dit Pervolia. Programmée dans le cadre d’une étude générale de la topographie urbaine à l’âge du Fer, cette fouille a permis de conduire une étude exhaustive, à la fois à l’échelle du site (occupation diachronique de l’espace) et à celle de la tombe (architecture, cycle d’utilisation, pratiques funéraires). Les résultats de ces travaux occupent la majeure partie de ce volume, que complètent la publication du matériel de tombes découvertes lors de fouilles plus anciennes sur le même site et celle des fouilles d’urgence réalisées par le Département des Antiquités de Chypre en 2012 dans une autre nécropole de la ville, au lieu-dit Tourapi. Le volume est dirigé par Anna Cannavò, Sabine Fourrier et Alexandre Rabot, en collaboration avec Anna Satraki pour la publication des fouilles de Kition-Tourapi. Plusieurs spécialistes ont bien voulu apporter leur concours : Fabien Belhaoues, Rémi Corbineau, Nathalie Delhopital, Nathalia Denninger, Lluis Garcia Petit, Armelle Gardeisen, Anna Georgiadou, Evangéline Markou, Maria A. Socratous et Prisca Vareilles. Les archives scientifiques de la fouille de la mission à Kition-Pervolia sont consultables en libre accès sur le portail chypre.mom.fr, développé par Bruno Morandière (MOM).

    Description: Phytochemicals from natural products are now widely used as food additives (antioxidants, pigments), food supplements, cosmetic ingredients, etc. Currently, the majority of the extraction processes implemented on an industrial scale for the production of bioactive-enriched extracts are based on solvents of petroleum origin. However, contemporary trends in green extraction techniques dictate a minimization of solvent use, low-energy processes and novel eco-friendly materials that are environmentally benign. The search for liquids and/or extraction technologies that could meet such requirements is, therefore, an intriguing concept.     Description: From Sung times, and throughout the Ming period, one of the dominant philosophies of China had been a dualistic rationalism thought to be firmly grounded on the classics. Tai Chen (1723-1777) was a scholar and philosopher during the Ch'ing period- a time when China produced few philosophic thinkers. He was the greatest of these, and his views are embodied chiefly in Yuan Shan and in Meng Tzu txu-yi shu-cheng. In place of the prevailing Sung dualism, Tai Chen propounded a rationalistic monism seldom before insinuated in a Chinese philosophy. He declines to accept current dogmas and preferred to seek his own truths. His commentaries opposed the time-honored interpretations of Chu Hsi, and he discredited them on purely philosophical grounds. But with few disciples to carry on his teachings, he was virtually forgotten or ignored in China for more than a hundred years after his death. It was not until early in the present century- with China under the pressures of Western aggression and internal disorders-that Tai Chen's nearness to Western thought was rediscovered and his important role in the history of philosophy recognized. Curiously, this first of China's Western-oriented philosophers even today remains little known in the West and his major writings largely untranslated.

Sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, linguists, and scholars of international relations and public health are just some of the authors contributing to Rethinking Borders. The diversity in the authors’ disciplines and the topics they focus on exemplify the intricacies of borders and their manifold effects. This openness to so many schools of thought stands in contrast to the solidification of stricter borders across the globe. The contributions range from case studies of migrants’ sense of belonging and safety to theoretical discussions about migration and globalization, from empirical studies about immigrant practices and exclusionary laws to ethical concerns about the benefits of inclusion. It is timely that this collective work is published in the middle of a pandemic that has affected every single part of the world. Unprecedented border closures and stringent travel restrictions have not been enough to contain the virus entirely.     Description: In this book are reported nine works related to land subsidence monitoring using remote sensing techniques. Land subsidence is a common phenomenon in many regions of the world, where it causes degradation of local ecosystems and disruption of economic activities. Its effects are more evident in densely populated areas in particular in low-lying territories such as river deltas and coastal areas where the combination of land subsidence and sea level rise increases the flooding risk. For this reason, the monitoring of ground deformations is a crucial step to obtain important information for the development of risk mitigation strategies. In the presented papers, the characteristics of land subsidence occurring in different study areas are described, and recent developments in the used methodologies for the monitoring of the ground displacements are discussed and validated also by means of ground-based data. Moreover, advantages and disadvantages of the adopted techniques are highlighted. The outcomes of these research works can provide national and local authorities with useful information for the implementation of integrated monitoring systems in the areas most affected by land subsidence.

    Description: Le Zibaldone est le grand journal de pensées de Giacomo Leopardi. Le jeune philosophe y consigne, sur près de quinze ans et plus de 4500 pages, des réflexions qu’il nomme « de philosophie variée et de belle littérature ». Et en effet, c’est bien la variété, et même la plus étonnante bigarrure qui caractérisent ce monumental magasin d’écriture : bigarrure des matières brassées (métaphysique, théologie, politique, morale, esthétique) et bigarrure des formes (aphorisme, anecdote, note érudite, essai). Le Zibaldone apparaît donc tout d’abord comme un flux discontinu et disparate de pensée. Cependant, Leopardi n’entend pas y exposer une rhapsodie de vérités isolées et fragmentaires mais un authentique système philosophique. « Il mio sistema » : tels sont les premiers mots du cri léopardien, de son exigence méthodologique et ontologique. Manquer d’esprit de système c’est manquer d’ordre, et c’est surtout manquer l’essence même du réel, de la nature en tant que totalité, une nature qu’il ne saurait concevoir autrement, elle aussi, que comme un système et un ordre. Quel est donc l’ordre du système léopardien ? Et dans quelle mesure celui-ci épouse-t-il l’ordre de la nature ? Quel est leur fondement commun ? Répondre à ces questions revient à montrer en quoi cette totalité mouvante, ouverte et rhizomatique qu’est le Zibaldone est le lieu le plus à même d’accueillir une pensée placée devant l’urgence de statuer sur les guises de l’existence et de la contradiction.

    Description: Farmland abandonment is one of the major land use changes occurring in many rural territories, especially in mountainous regions. Without intervention (passive land management), farmland abandonment leads to an expansion of shrubs and forest on formerly cultivated hillslopes and grazing areas. All these land use changes affect the hydrological and geomorphological dynamics of slopes and channels, having important implications for water resources and soil conservation. However, the heterogeneity of abandoned scenarios complicates the assessment of farmland abandonment on water resources and soil conservation. In this Special Issue, we will publish papers that examine the hydrological and geomorphological consequences of farmland abandonment in one (or several) of these abandoned scenarios. Our final purpose is to help water and land managers to select the most sustainable strategy (in terms of water resources and soil conservation) for the land management of marginal rural areas.

    Description: Cet ouvrage a pour ambition de jeter un nouvel éclairage sur les rapports entre la phénoménologie issue de l’œuvre fondatrice de E. Husserl (1859-1938) et les approches scientifiques contemporaines de la cognition, envisagées dans toute leur diversité disciplinaire, la multiplicité de leurs niveaux d’explication et la variété de leurs conflits d’hypothèses. Le souci premier des recherches qu’il rassemble n’est donc pas de s’engager dans une nouvelle exégèse de la phénoménologie husserlienne, quoique le rôle de ce travail interprétatif et critique ne soit aucunement sous-estimé, mais bien plutôt de déterminer dans quelle mesure celle-ci peut contribuer à la quête actuelle d’une explication naturaliste des phénomènes cognitifs, en lui apportant des compléments sur certains points ou en la soumettant à la critique sur d’autres. Mais au-delà, leur ambition est aussi de mesurer la pertinence de la recherche cognitive contemporaine pour la phénoménologie husserlienne elle-même, en évaluant en quoi elle est susceptible d’imprimer à cette dernière un nouveau tournant. Parce qu'aucun ouvrage ne saurait prétendre embrasser les multiples facettes de cette double interrogation, les contributions ici rassemblées l’abordent principalement sous l’angle de la question de la naturalisation. Cette problématique permet d’embrasser une grande variété de problèmes, allant des structures générales de l’intentionnalité au problème des principes épistémologiques et ontologiques sur lesquels doit reposer une théorie scientifique de la cognition, en passant par l’analyse de la temporalité ou de la perception, ainsi que la modélisation mathématique de leur description phénoménologique. Naturaliser la phénoménologie constitue par là une réflexion collective sur la façon dont la phénoménologie husserlienne peut contribuer à l’effort actuel pour surmonter le problème du déficit d’explication de l’expérience phénoménale par l’activité cérébrale, et en retour, sur celle dont un tel effort permet de la réorienter dans une voie naturaliste. Ce livre est la version française de l’ouvrage Naturalizing Phenomenology : Issues in Contemporary Phenomenology and Cognitive Science, paru en décembre 1999 à Stanford University Press.

    Description: Fondé sur des entretiens et des observations en profondeur, cet ouvrage décrit d'abord l'activité des assistantes et des assistants sociaux œuvrant dans cinq CASS (centres d'action sociale et de santé) de l'Hospice général à Genève. Il dépeint ensuite le travail effectué dans quatre lieux de réinsertion aux pratiques et objectifs diversifiés (Réalise, Les Fringantes, le Bilan portfolio de compétences et Arcade 84). L'angle d'approche documente moins des politiques sociales, des règlements ou des directives que leur mise en œuvre pratique et les façons d'être ou d'agir des professionnel-le-s en interaction avec des bénéficiaires de l'aide sociale. Il questionne le travail de réinsertion tel qu'il se produit, au quotidien. La recherche présentée ici montre que ce travail de réinsertion renvoie avant tout à une « resocialisation », c'est-à-dire davantage à un reformatage des comportements qu'au développement des compétences et des réseaux des bénéficiaires. L'analyse met aussi en évidence que, au-delà des rapports institutionnels de contrainte et de pouvoir, les assistants sociaux et les bénéficiaires initient des cycles de dons et de contre-dons, autant de processus de défi et de reconnaissance qu'il convient - à l'heure de la diminution des prestations d'assistance - d'articuler avec des principes renouvelés de justice sociale.
