    Description: Les aspects politiques, militaires, économiques et géographiques de la Première Guerre mondiale sont à présent bien connus ; mais la rupture qu’a signifiée le déclenchement des hostilités en 1914 atteint également les domaines de la pensée, de la littérature et de la conscience des peuples engagés dans le conflit. Dû à une douzaine de chercheurs, germanistes ou historiens, cet ouvrage est consacré aux composantes philosophiques de ce qu’on a appelé, non sans raison, la "guerre des esprits" et à la mise en forme littéraire des diverses images de la guerre. Dans la première partie, six études novatrices, étayées par des documents inédits ou non encore étudiés, rendent compte de l’attitude des écrivains et des intellectuels allemands et français qu’elles replacent dans le contexte des grands débats idéologiques de l’époque. Contraints d’intégrer le thème de la guerre dans leur œuvre, romanciers et poètes ont tenté d’opposer à l’horreur du champ de bataille un traitement esthétique de ce thème lorsqu’ils n’ont pas magnifié le combat. La seconde moitié de l’ouvrage montre, à partir d’analyses de textes fondamentaux, comment s’est opérée la rencontre entre l’histoire littéraire et l’actualité guerrière et apporte des réponses inédites à l’épineuse question de sa fécondité.

    Description: Depuis la fin du xxe siècle, un pan de la critique universitaire s’est montré soucieux d’offrir aux études francophones un soubassement épistémologique capable d’asseoir leur légitimité. Le présent ouvrage se situe résolument dans ce sillage. Son originalité tient sans doute à la contribution d’écrivains et d’étudiants conviés à participer à cet effort réflexif. Adoptant une composition polygraphe qui mêle articles scientifiques, essais et entretiens, ce livre esquisse un inventaire des concepts, pratiques et méthodes permettant d’appréhender les écritures francophones du xxie siècle commençant. Il fait ainsi surgir ou resurgir quelques grandes questions et met en relief certaines nécessités : reconsidérer le concept même de francophonie, inclure la variété de ses espaces et de ses corpus, mais aussi sortir les études francophones de leur confinement. Plus globalement, il s’agit d’élaborer de nouveaux cadres théoriques pour repenser l’espace, le temps et l’histoire littéraire.

The innovative combination of linguistics, history, and cartography makes a wealth of hard-to-reach knowledge readily available to both specialist and general readers. It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language.     Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: La théorie de Darwin aussi bien que sa réception scientifique, littéraire et politique en France continuent d’être matière à débat. Les controverses qu’elle a suscitées à partir de la première traduction française de L’Origine des espèces en 1862 n’ont pas été le seul fait des naturalistes, des géologues ou des paléontologues. De nombreux autres savants se sont préoccupés de l’impact du darwinisme sur leur discipline, notamment en philologie, dans les mathématiques, la linguistique, la psychologie comparée, l’histoire ou la philosophie. Les auteurs des textes réunis dans Darwin au Collège de France montrent que le Collège de France constitue un point de référence idéal pour étudier les idées de Darwin et leur réception ainsi que la manière dont elles ont pu jouer sur la formation des disciplines du milieu du xixe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Parmi les défenseurs ou les adversaires français du darwinisme, on compte en effet plusieurs de ses professeurs, à commencer par Pierre Flourens, dont l’Examen du livre de M. Darwin (1864) a été l’un des premiers comptes rendus hostiles de L’Origine des espèces. D’autres figurent encore dans la liste : Ernest Renan, Edgar Quinet, Théodule Ribot, Jean-Charles Lévêque, Étienne-Jules Marey, Jean-François Nourrisson, Michel Bréal, Gabriel Tarde, Henri Bergson, Étienne Gilson. À cette liste s’ajoutent les professeurs de biologie, de médecine, de paléontologie, de neurosciences, ou d’économie politique. Le colloque, dont les contributions sur quelques-uns des savants mentionnés ci-dessus sont réunies dans le deuxième volume de la collection « Passage des disciplines », a été organisé par Alain Prochiantz et Antoine Compagnon dans le cadre du projet « Passage des disciplines : Histoire globale du Collège de France, xixe siècle - xxe siècle », qui s’intéresse à l’évolution des matières enseignées aussi bien que celles qui ont n’y ont pas été admises et qui forment un « Collège virtuel », depuis la fin du xviiie siècle jusqu’aux années 1960. Il est dirigé par Antoine Compagnon, avec la collaboration de Céline Surprenant et le soutien financier de PSL (2016-2019), et de la Fondation Hugot.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

    Description: In recent years, through novels and television series ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" or "Occupied"), Nordic culture has become more visible internationally. At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme. Pluriel et mouvant, moteur constant de redéfinitions, le Nord inspire une fabrication tant scripturale que figurale fondée sur le désir, le rêve, la fascination ou le fantasme.     Description: Écrire la crise ce n'est pas la raconter. C'est montrer comment elle modifie nos manières de raconter. Encore faut-il s'entendre sur le mot lui-même car peut-on appeler crise (du grec « krisis » : changement brutal) cette lente dissolution des valeurs de la modernité qui nous fait entrer dans un « après » informulable, sinon par le terme souvent controversé de postmodernité ? Au-delà des polémiques que suscite cette notion, il s'agit ici de considérer le postmoderne non pas comme une régression anti-moderne mais comme la prise de conscience d'un certain nombre de dévoiements du projet moderne qui nous projettent dans une ère de turbulence dont les arts, et en particulier la littérature, portent la marque. Ainsi considéré, le postmodernisme n'est ni une école, ni une avant-garde. Il témoigne avant tout d'une crise de culture à la transition des deux siècles, qui s'est transformée en culture de la crise, de sorte que, non seulement la pensée, la science et les arts, s'en trouvent affectés, mais de manière plus profonde encore, la société et l'individu. C'est pourquoi cet essai se propose à la fois, d'examiner l'hypothèse postmoderne comme mise en turbulence des valeurs de la modernité, et de définir le postmodernisme en littérature comme une esthétique qui met en relation les configurations sociales et certaines formes d'écriture contemporaine.

    Description: Comme dans la Science-Fiction, le récit littéraire ou filmique d’anticipation politique, à partir de données fournies par les sciences et la technique de l’époque de sa création, projette le lecteur ou le spectateur dans une société future. Mettant l’accent sur une rupture avec l’Ancien Monde (à la suite d’une guerre ou d’un cataclysme), il imagine de nouvelles façons de vivre, généralement façonnées par une technique très développée et un pouvoir autoritaire. Influencé par l’utopie, mais relevant le plus souvent de la contre-utopie (dystopie), il décrit volontiers des sociétés totalitaires, un monde absurde auquel le présent conduirait presque inéluctablement, ce qui implique une critique politique de l’époque contemporaine. Il revêt ainsi un caractère prophétique et constitue une réflexion sur le Pouvoir, ainsi que sur la notion même de civilisation. Enfin, étant donné qu’il s’agit le plus souvent de romans, écrits dès l’origine par de grands écrivains (H.G. Wells, J. London), on peut sans doute conclure à l’existence d’un véritable sous-genre romanesque : le roman d’anticipation politique, entouré d’un corpus très abondant d’œuvres ressortissant à la paralittérature, et de fictions cinématographiques.

    Description: "Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book—not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page—over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged—and packaged themselves—in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers."

Theoretically developing a concept and approach of associative governance, the book sheds light on a dynamic way of perceiving associative aspects of community and commercial life that has been hitherto underexplored and undertheorized. It shows how governance by associations may be conducted not only bottom‑up by self‑organized and voluntary participation, but also top‑down by authoritative incorporation through government, and – not least – in multifarious interstices in between. New section by exploring a vibrant panoply of dimensions of associative governance, empirically grounded in historical analyses of a wide range of organizational repertoires, the book may provide novel insights into the significant role of associative governance in Scandinavia over the past two centuries. Finally, it provides research‑based knowledge about how to maintain “good political and economic institutions” in the future and a more holistic and dynamic approach to the literature on The Nordic model. The book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Nordic and Scandinavian studies, history, sociology, political science, marketing, social policy, organization theory, and public management.     Description: The buildings erected in his native city by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus are amongst the most impressive and best-preserved in the Roman world. Because of their unique state of preservation, they give an unparalleled insight into what an architect with an imperial commission could do, when he had the building-materials and technical expertise of the entire empire at his disposal.〈br/>〈br/>The buildings excavated by Italian teams between the two World Wars were examined in detail by Ward-Perkins between 1948 and 1953. The study was never completed in his lifetime, though the drawings and much of the text existed at least in draft form. The present publication puts these in the public domain, together with Ward-Perkins' authoritative insights into the process by which such a grand project was executed.

    Description: St Peter's, Barton-upon-Humber, is a redundant medieval church in the care of English Heritage. As a result of a major program of research carried out between 1978 and 2007, it is now the most intensively studied parish church in the UK. Excavations between 1978 and 1984 investigated most of the interior of the building, as well as a swathe of churchyard around its exterior. At the same time, a stone-by-stone record and detailed archaeological study of the fabric and furnishings of the church was undertaken, continuing down to 2007. The twin aims of the project were to understand the architectural history and setting of this complex, multi-period building (Volume 1, Parts 1 and 2) and to recover a substantial sample of the population for palaeopathological study (Volume 2). An extensive program of historical and topographical research also took place in order to set the archaeological evidence firmly in context.

    Description: La Fontaine affiche nettement sa filiation à l’égard de Marot. Du moins à l’égard d’un Marot. Comme beaucoup d’auteurs de son époque, il voit en effet dans le poète de L’Adolescence clémentine l’efflorescence printanière d’un style proprement français, qui allie au piquant et au brio la naïveté toute vernale d’une écriture. L’auteur des Fables et des Contes admire ainsi le brillant faiseur d’épigrammes. Il y reconnaît « le génie fran­çais », son ingenium, son naturel. Ce naturel s’exprime à la fois dans un esprit gaulois – que Rabelais radicalise trop pour qu’on puisse en faire un allié de marque – et une écriture transparente, non savante, à l’opposé de l’artificieuse et docte poésie de la Pléiade rejetée par le XVIIe siècle comme un accident regrettable dans l’histoire des formes. Cet « élégant badinage », assigné depuis Boileau à Marot, a pu nuire à l’œuvre de ce dernier en en restreignant la portée. La critique moderne a, par contraste, reconnu dans le poète de Cahors un esprit secret, anxieux, au cœur des débats évangéliques du premier XVIe siècle. Le vrai Marot est sûrement à rechercher au carrefour de ces deux interprétations extrêmes ; comme La Fontaine, au demeurant, que l’on ne peut réduire au modèle achevé de l’esthétique galante. La relation qui unit Marot et La Fontaine est bien en tout cas au départ une relation d’ordre formel. Aussi les chercheurs réunis ici ont tous tenté de repenser ou de repréciser les lectures stylistiques de l’un ou l’autre de ces auteurs à travers leur interprétation de L’Adolescence clémentine ou des Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon. La diversité des points de vue adoptés permet d’aider à définir ce qui reste en dernier lieu le plus difficile à caractériser, ce naturel du style, si revêche à l’analyse littéraire.

For millennia, these descendants of the original Aryan settlers were part of many different empires set up by Greek, Arab, Turkic and Russian invaders, as well as their own, most notably during the Middle Ages. The emergence of the modern state of Tajikistan began after 1917 under Soviet rule, and culminated in the promulgation of independence from the moribund USSR in 1991. In the subsequent civil war that raged between 1992 and 1997, Tajikistan came close to becoming a failed state. The legacy of that internal conflict remains critical to understanding politics in Tajikistan a generation later. Exploring the patterns of ethnic identity and the exigencies of state formation, the book argues that despite a strong sense of belonging underpinned by shared history, mythology and cultural traits, the Tajiks have not succeeded in forming a consolidated nation. The politics of the Russian colonial administration, the national-territorial delimitation under Stalin, and the Soviet strategy of socio-economic modernisation contributed to the preservation and reification of sub-ethnic cleavages and regional identities. The book demonstrates the impact of region-based elite clans on Tajikistan’s political trajectory in the twilight years of the Soviet era, and identifies objective and subjective factors that led to the civil war. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era.

This interdisciplinary volume analyzes different kinds of local self-organization against the backdrop of the rather limited states of Antiquity and the Global South of the present. By collaborating across different periods of time the contributors get a better grasp of the mechanisms by which local governance succeeds, and advance the theoretical debate on state and society.

Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

On 12 March 2018, Mauritius celebrated fifty years as an independent nation amidst much fanfare. Yet behind the nation's official image of multicultural 'unity in diversity' lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. Against this backdrop, this book analyses how the idea of belonging - a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people - is problematised in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels. The island-nation's complex history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Waters explores how diverse forms of affirmative, affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, exclusionary 'politics of belonging' at communal, national or international levels. Using an eclectic theoretical approach to the central concept of belonging, Waters offers in-depth textual analyses of novels by leading Mauritian writers Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.

A wealth of information on ancient textiles is available from depictions such as sculpture, vase painting, figurines, reliefs and mosaics. Commonly represented in clothing, textiles are also present in furnishings and through the processes of textile production. The challenge for anyone analysing ancient iconography is determining how we interpret what we see. As preserved textiles rarely survive in comparable forms, we must consider the extent to which representations of textiles reflect reality, and critically evaluate the sources. Images are not simple replicas or photographs of reality. Instead, iconography draws on select elements from the surrounding world that were recognisable to the ancient audience, and reveal the perceptions, ideologies, and ideas of the society in which they were produced.     Description: This open access book is the first ever collection of Karl Popper's writings on deductive logic. Karl R. Popper (1902-1994) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. His philosophy of science ("falsificationism") and his social and political philosophy ("open society") have been widely discussed way beyond academic philosophy. What is not so well known is that Popper also produced a considerable work on the foundations of deductive logic, most of it published at the end of the 1940s as articles at scattered places. This little-known work deserves to be known better, as it is highly significant for modern proof-theoretic semantics. This collection assembles Popper's published writings on deductive logic in a single volume, together with all reviews of these papers. It also contains a large amount of unpublished material from the Popper Archives, including Popper's correspondence related to deductive logic and manuscripts that were (almost) finished, but did not reach the publication stage. All of these items are critically edited with additional comments by the editors. A general introduction puts Popper's work into the context of current discussions on the foundations of logic. This book should be of interest to logicians, philosophers, and anybody concerned with Popper's work.

Sans jamais sombrer dans le misérabilisme ni dans l’idéologie progressiste des intellectuels militants qu’il a fréquentés d’abord, il anticipe brillamment d'une génération sur l’explosion globale des littératures ‘dalit’ mais sans pour autant être intégré à celles-ci. Seul, ignoré ou admiré, il reste largement à découvrir. Son œuvre de fiction, ni réaliste ni populiste, est d’une précision clinique. Le talent de l’écrivain, très conscient mais rebelle à toute théorisation, consiste à peindre en l'éclairant de la lumière la plus crue, sous des angles variés mais toujours impitoyables, la société dans laquelle il situe une action exorcisée de toute métaphysique comme de tout misérabilisme, imperméable à toute sensiblerie, une vision du monde à travers ses soubassements. C’est par en-dessous qu’il en lait découvrir les mécanismes, intéressé par les manipulateurs de tous calibres, petits truqueurs ou ‘brokers’ parvenus, autant et plus que par leurs victimes, fasciné par la complexité des comportements humains et de leur enchaînement.

    Description: Terre de mélanges culturels et de politiques coloniales, la Tunisie a attiré de l’Europe des courants d’immigrations aussi bien que des visées impérialistes. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

It is broadly held that Muslim women were silent and relegated to a purely private space until 1945, when the communist state “unveiled” and “liberated” them from the top down.  After systematic archival research in Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, and Austria, Fabio Giomi challenges this view by showing:  How different sectors of the Yugoslav elite through association publications, imagined the role of Muslim women in post-Ottoman times, and how Muslim women took part in the construction or the contestation of these narratives.  How associa­tions employed different means in order to forge a generation of “New Muslim Women” able to cope with the post-Ottoman political and social circumstances.  And how Muslim women used the tools provided by the associations in order to pursue their own projects, aims and agendas.  The insights are relevant for today’s challenges facing Muslim women in Europe. The text is illustrated with exceptional photographs.

Mais il se trouve que ces rapports furent aussi d’opposition, le bonheur du voyage devenant sous sa plume l’expression d’un destin ironique ou tragique, toujours décevant, parfois cruel. S’interrogeant sur les causes de cette contradiction, cet ouvrage s’efforce de montrer l’existence d’une véritable stratégie du voyage gidien : lisible autant dans la structure des œuvres que dans leur organisation thématique ou symbolique, elle permet à son auteur de vivre et de dire ce que la société et une part de lui-même condamnaient au silence. Chargé à la fois de révéler et de dissimuler, le voyage est ainsi au cœur de l’ambiguïté gidienne.     Description: La modernisation au Brésil se confond avec la constitution du pays. La forme qu'elle y assume se dessine de façon décisive au moment même de l'indépendance en 1822 et se reproduit en temps que modernisation conservatrice tout au long des deux siècles suivants. C'est ainsi qu'elle donne le sentiment d'osciller entre un changement qui ne respecte que peu de limites et la persistance du passé. Cette modernisation à la fois vertigineuse et toujours incomplète a souvent été dramatique, faisant parfois disparaître les marques qui auraient permis de l'évaluer. La conscience culturelle perd alors pied lorsque l'on envisage la portée et le sens des transformations qui l'affectent. La meilleure littérature brésilienne n'a jamais cessé de travailler ces formes contradictoires. C'est sous cet angle que les examinent deux équipes française et brésilienne, dans le cadre d'un accord Usp-Cofecub, en essayant de mettre en lumière les rapports qui s'établissent entre la forme littéraire et le processus social. Elles se sont concentrées sur certains moments où ce rythme particulier se donne à voir avec plus de netteté : le début de la République, l'immigration et l'industrialisation des années 20 puis les transformations post-1945. Trois axes thématiques ordonnent la quinzaine d'études contenues dans le présent volume : regards sur la ville, écriture et idéologie, lyrique et modernité.

The 'City by the Pool' was a major religious centre long before the Roman invasion and from bronze-age shamans to early Baptists people have always been attracted here for spiritual as well as mundane purposes. The authors argue for the presence of a major ritual causeway of the late Bronze and Iron Age and outline the extent to which ritual monuments also contributed to the character of Roman Lincoln. This book is based on more than a hundred publicly-funded excavations and building surveys undertaken between 1945 and 2000. It surveys all aspects of city life, from housing and fortifications to the water supply and rubbish disposal. It includes a CD Rom with a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a relational data-base known as LARA (the Lincoln Archaeological Research Assessment).

    Description: Comment se dire dans son temps quand l'histoire invente l'individu en même temps qu'elle le malmène ? De Waterloo aux Mémoires d'outre-tombe, la publication de mémoires est un phénomène éditorial qui fait parler à l'époque de « fièvre » ou de « manie ». Parmi ces textes, seul le grand œuvre de Chateaubriand aurait eu la grâce, sanctionnée par une postérité toujours active, de transformer en or littéraire le modèle d'écriture pratiqué dans le tout-venant des mémoires. Les moins mal connus de ces derniers sont les mémoires de Fouché, de la duchesse d'Abrantès, de madame de Genlis et les Mémoires d'une Contemporaine. Le succès de ces textes en leur temps n'a d'égal que l'oubli dans lequel ils sont rapidement tombés, dès la seconde moitié du xixe siècle : victimes du divorce, consommé à ce moment-là, entre histoire et littérature. Occulté depuis plus d'un siècle, l'énorme corpus de la mémoire historique publiée entre 1815 et 1848 existe comme un continent englouti. Le mettre au jour, c'est non seulement ressusciter une bonne part du discours de l'époque, mais plus encore observer comment ont été amenés à se rencontrer et donc à se réinventer les modèles de l'expression de soi et de l'histoire. La prose des mémoires est comme un laboratoire où, dans les conditions d'existence nouvelles créées par la Révolution, l'écriture de soi, celle de l'histoire et aussi celle du roman se découvrent partie liée.

    Description: The authors comprehensively analyze all the available information regarding the ritual practices of Slavic pre-Christian religion that can be found in written medieval texts. After investigating every kind of reference to such practices, they offer a reconstruction of Slavic pre-Christian religion on the basis of these medieval testimonies. In doing so, they overcome the challenges presented by the fact that all of these sources are indirect, since the Slavs did not acquire literacy until they became Christians. Thus the writers of these texts mostly professed a monotheistic religion, being Christians and in some cases Muslims. The picture that they offer is biased and determined by their own faith. The present analysis innovatively combines testimonies from every Slavic area (Eastern, Western, and Southern), showing their mutual correspondences and emphasizing the relationship between the Slavic pre-Christian religion and its Indo-European roots.

    Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

Au cours de véritables bacchanales théâtrales et linguistiques, ces auteurs mêlent les figures carnavalesques, christiques et dionysiaques comme conjuration du théâtre mortifère de la scène franquiste où les cérémonials se succèdent : cérémonials de l'auto-glorification de l'autocrate, défilés commémoratifs (18 juillet), cérémonials sacrificiels (répression, torture, exécutions), scénographies urbaines et monumentales grandioses. Défini tantôt comme théâtre underground, tantôt comme théâtre « symboliste », il est surtout un théâtre rituel grotesque néobaroque au ton blasphématoire et à l'esprit d'insolence et de désobéissance. Sont étudiés ici les univers dramaturgiques de quatre de ces auteurs qui participent à la fois de ces trois ordres esthético-politiques : Luis Riaza (1925), Francisco Nieva (1927), Antonio Martínez Ballesteros (1929) et Miguel Romero Esteo (1930).

    Description: Envois & Dédicaces constitue une réflexion sur le don du livre, qu’il se manifeste par un ex-dono, un envoi manuscrit ou une dédicace imprimée. Si cette dernière a été étudiée à propos de tel ou tel auteur, il nous manquait encore une réflexion d’ensemble sur celle-ci. Quant à l’envoi, jugé marginal et mondain, il n’a guère été abordé, hormis par les bibliophiles. On en trouvera ici un « bref traité » qui en souligne toute la richesse. Pas plus qu’il n’existe d’éléments insignifiants dans la vie psychique, ainsi que Freud nous l’a appris, il n’existe dans le livre de détail dépourvu de valeur. La modernité s’est intéressée longuement à la signature, beaucoup moins à l’envoi et à la dédicace, parce qu’elle estimait la littérature intransitive. Elle transite cependant et s’adresse à quelqu’un. Et ce qui semble à première vue accessoire joue un rôle non négligeable, sinon capital, dans la constitution du sens d’un livre. Telle est l’hypothèse d’Envois & Dédicaces, et son pari. Sa première partie, « Perspective cavalière » s’interroge, entre autres, sur la position en tiers du lecteur ainsi que sur la place de la dédicace, premiers mots d’un livre qui se révèlent souvent aussi ses derniers mots. À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ainsi cet ouvrage entend contribuer à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés et la nature, et permettre de mieux saisir leurs coévolutions.

    Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: The Eve of Spain demonstrates how the telling and retelling of one of Spain’s founding myths played a central role in the formation of that country’s national identity. King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula—in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. The story continued to resonate through the Enlightenment and into modern historiography, revealing the complex interactions of racial and religious conflict and evolving ideas of women’s sexuality.In following the story of La Cava, Rodrigo, and Pelayo, Grieve explains how foundational myths and popular legends articulate struggles for national identity. She explores how myths are developed around few historical facts, how they come to be written into history, and how they are exploited politically, as in the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 followed by that of the Moriscos in 1609. Finally, Grieve focuses on the misogynistic elements of the story and asks why the fall of Spain is figured as a cautionary tale about a woman’s sexuality.

Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

Forced to submit to a medical inspection that revealed a woman's body, Don Antonio confessed to having been María Yta, but continued to assert his maleness and claimed to have a functional "member" that appeared, he said, when necessary. Passing to América is at once a historical biography and an in-depth examination of the sex/gender complex in an era before "gender" had been divorced from "sex." The book presents readers with the original court docket, including Don Antonio's extended confession, in which he tells his life story, and the equally extraordinary biographical sketch offered by Felipa Ybañez of her "son María," both in English translation and the original Spanish. Thomas A. Abercrombie's analysis not only grapples with how to understand the sex/gender system within the Spanish Atlantic empire at the turn of the nineteenth century but also explores what Antonio/María and contemporaries can teach us about the complexities of the relationship between sex and gender today. Passing to América brings to light a previously obscure case of gender transgression and puts Don Antonio's life into its social and historical context in order to explore the meaning of "trans" identity in Spain and its American colonies. Un tel montage fait apparaître, entre les cabinets de curiosités d’hier et les macabres fantaisies zombie d’aujourd’hui, entre les spéculations de la culture savante et les fictions filmiques, de troublants et vivants échos. Et si la mélancolie des motifs funèbres et des Vanités a bien sa place dans cette fable anthropologique et esthétique, la tonalité qui s’en dégage est à l’opposé : rarement ouvrage érudit aura été comme celui-ci soulevé par une écriture aussi limpide et jubilatoire pour dire l’avènement moderne des morts-vivants.

Ajoutons les nouveautés scénographiques et le succès international de cette pièce, imitée par Thomas Shadwell en Angleterre, pour accroître l’intérêt de cette édition.

Cet espace livresque sans grand équivalent dans l’histoire de la littérature interroge en profondeur les frontières de la représentation dans l’exhibition permanente des éléments de la présentation. La relation critique du peintre et du poète, du visible et du lisible conduit à une interrogation en acte sur les modalités de l’écriture - sujet, temps, espace - et de la lecture. L’analyse proposée tente de rendre sensibles les coordonnées d’une expérience de la création littéraire confrontée à son alter ego, et celles d’une expérience à la fois du pouvoir et de la fragilité des critères d’identification de l’objet littéraire : sujet et objet, fictionnel et référentiel, récit et discours. Lire Henri Matisse, roman, c’est éprouver en même temps l’éclatement de l’écrit dans son contact avec l’inassimilable, et la persistance, au delà des ruptures, d’un discours inspiré. Le livre rassemble les décombres d’un grand édifice national et les transforme en chantier d’une œuvre littéraire désormais impossible.

    Description: La famille constitue depuis longtemps un objet d’étude privilégié des historiens des sociétés. Ayant abandonné l’attention presque exclusive accordée autre­fois aux seuls lignages aristocratiques voire royaux, cette histoire de la famille a connu depuis un demi-siècle de profonds renouvellements, tant thématiques que méthodologiques. Directement impliquée dans l’histoire quantitative, notamment par le biais de la « reconstruction des familles », la thématique familiale s’est retrouvée au centre de l’histoire des mentalités. Ultérieurement enfin, via l’importation de problématiques venues des autres sciences sociales et le recours à la démarche « micro-historique », la famille s’est muée en un espace social et anthropologique au sein duquel sont mises à jours les dynamiques qui affectent ces réalités familiales. Dans le même temps, ces réflexions sur le passé d’une réalité sociale toujours vivante viennent en écho aux interrogations contemporaines sur le devenir de la famille nucléaire. La « crise » d’un modèle familial pluriséculaire et les recompositions familiales auxquelles elles donnent lieu placent ces réflexions sur la famille au cœur d’un débat de société particulièrement intense. Dans ce contexte qui fait de la famille un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le colloque organisé à Toulouse a voulu dresser un bilan des travaux les plus récents des meilleurs spécialistes du sujet, il s’est inscrit dans une démarche délibérément comparatiste tout en insistant sur les continuités et les ruptures identifiables tant en termes de problématiques, de démarches que de résultats. Compte tenu de la spécificité du laboratoire à l’origine de cette réflexion, le comparatisme concerne essentiellement les espaces français et ibérique, ce dernier étant compris au sens large puisqu’il intègre les sociétés coloniales ibéro-américaines. Dans le même temps, ce colloque a fait le choix de la transdisciplinarité et de la longue durée, depuis le bas Moyen-Âge jusqu’au xxe siècle. Cette longue phase chronologique coïncide avec l’émergence puis le développement de la structure nucléaire, modèle familial précisément en cours de redéfinition aujourd’hui. À son propos, leurs auteurs y confrontent des approches historiques, sociologiques, anthropologiques et juridiques qui toutes éclairent les complexités de cette histoire tout en contextualisant les interroga­tions contemporaines.

    Description: Clachtoll broch is one of the most spectacular Iron Age settlements on the northern mainland of Scotland. When it became clear that the structure was threatened by coastal erosion, community heritage group Historic Assynt launched a major program of conservation and excavation works designed to secure the vulnerable structure and recover the archaeological evidence of its occupation and use. The resulting excavation provided evidence of a long and complex history of construction and rebuilding, with the final, middle Iron Age occupation phase ending in a catastrophic fire and collapse of the tower by the early years of the first century AD. The internal deposits span perhaps 50 years of the brochsquo;s final occupation and were remarkably well preserved, with no evidence for secondary re-use or disturbance after the fire. As a result, the excavation provides a remarkable snapshot of life in Iron Age Scotland, with an artifact assemblage attesting to daily agricultural life as well as long-range contacts that sets the broch within a wider Atlantic community. Specialist analysis of the artifactual and palaeoenvironmental evidence coupled with detailed analysis of the structure in its local geographical context combine to provide a major new contribution to the archaeology of north-west Scotland, with wider implications for our understanding of late prehistoric society in northern Britain.This report comprises the results of the archaeological investigations at Clachtoll, compiled by a team of archaeologists and specialists from AOC Archaeology Group, and brings together evidence from a range of specialist analyses as well as environmental and landscape investigations.

La représentation de la mère – Patrie, Vierge, Nation – participe à la construction de récits nationaux souvent concurrents, de Robespierre à Auguste Comte, de Napoléon à Jules Ferry. Le recours à ces images maternelles légitime les valeurs qui irriguent les institutions et a des conséquences évidentes sur le lien social. L’ampleur des sources et la qualité des analyses font ressortir des perspectives interdisciplinaires inédites, la psychanalyse constituant le « cadre fantôme » de cette recherche. C’est à une relecture novatrice des univers mentaux d’un long XIXe siècle que cet ouvrage nous convie.
