    Description: The Finnish novelist Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo’s (1919–2000) main work, the Iijoki series, consists of 26 novels (comprising ca. 17 000 pages) and was written in 1971–1998. In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful.

    Description: Este trabalho analisa as teorias científicas que procuram explicar a aquisição e o desenvolvimento da linguagem e do pensamento sob a perspectiva genética. Essa análise é feita a partir dos debates entre seus expoentes mais ilustres, como Vygotsky, Wallon, Chomsky e Piaget, e dos pontos de convergência e divergência entre eles. Apesar das diferenças, há entre esses pensadores um propósito comum: fundamentar o estudo psicológico daquelas funções sobre bases científicas e genéticas e superar as concepções idealistas e materialistas mecanicistas. Desse modo, Dongo-Montoya retoma o tema da origem do pensamento da linguagem, com o debate entre Vygotsky e Piaget, cujas ideias estiveram presentes nas discussões do século XX. Na sequência, confronta as posições de Wallon e Piaget e de Piaget e Chomsky. Por fim, o autor dedica-se a evidenciar o pensamento mais atual e acabado de Piaget sobre o tema e a apresentar as consequências do desenvolvimento desses debates e dessas teorias sobre pensamento e linguagem para as questões educacionais e pedagógicas atuais.

    Description: Politeness is a key means by which we maintain interpersonal relationships. This book is the first comprehensive study of politeness in Finnish. Based on linguistic and pragmatic research, the book spans three parts. The first part is theoretical and historical, summarising three waves of politeness research, describing politeness as a cultural and historical phenomenon. The second part is empirical, providing an example of the study of im/politeness from outsiders’ perspectives—that, is French people living in Finland and Finns living or having lived in France. The focus group discussions ranged from definitions of politeness and differences of behaviour, to learning and teaching as well as to changes to politeness norms within society. The third part summarises the conclusions and offers an epilogue. This reader-friendly book includes exercises and recommended readings, and is welcomed by researchers and students working on politeness and, more broadly, relational work.

    Description: Methods in Linguistics is a collection of articles presenting a broad variety of methods and approaches in the field of linguistics. It offers structure to the spectrum of methodological possibilities and helps the reader to identify the field of application as well as the strengths and weaknesses of different methods. The book consists of an extensive introductory part and a variety of articles, each written by experts of the method in question. It discusses questions related to different kinds of data and data collection, as well as methods used for analysing data. Since the methods used in linguistics are often related to a specific linguistic current, the book offers examples from a wide range of linguistic approaches. The book is addressed to students, researchers and other readers interested in the methods used in linguistics. The general methodological and metatheoretical knowledge offered in the introduction guides the reader through the different methodological choices presented and helps the reader to select the best method to meet her needs. First, the research process is explained step-by-step from the selection of topic and data to questions related to research design, analysis and the reporting of the results. The second part of the introduction focuses on fundamental theoretical and methodological questions, such as the criteria for knowledge, the nature of scientific knowledge and the scientific method. The third part addresses more specifically the methodology of linguistics, discussing the multifaceted nature of natural language and linguistics as a discipline. The introduction also covers many current topics in science, such as research ethics, data protection and open science principles. The book can be used as self-study material by students and researchers alike, or as course material in higher education.     Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

    Description: A obra está inserida nesta dupla linha de investigação: a competência tradutória e sua aquisição; e a didática da tradução. O livro é uma contribuição importante para a investigação sobre a competência tradutória, uma vez que aborda o estudo das diversas subcompetências essenciais para o tradutor (bilíngue, extralinguística, instrumental e estratégica) e também para o tradutólogo (competência teórica e metateórica).     Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: Teorias Linguísticas: orientações para a pesquisa é resultante do diálogo entre vários pesquisadores do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Linguagem (PPCL). A proposta deste livro é apresentar um guia para o conhecimento das principais áreas de pesquisa nos estudos da linguagem. Inicialmente, o Prof. Dr. Gilson Chicon Alves discorre sobre o Estruturalismo, destacando suas contribuições para os estudos das línguas, como sistema passível de descrição. Depois, o Prof. Dr. Cid Ivan da Costa Carvalho dá sequência ao percurso, ao desenvolver a empreitada gerativista de explicar a língua como faculdade humana. Em seguida, os Prof.s Dr. José Roberto Alves Barbosa e Dr. Wellington Vieira Mendes contribuem com o enfoque funcional nos estudos da língua, articulando os aspectos formais e funcionais da língua e atentando para suas metafunções. Logo após, o Prof. Dr. Pedro Adrião da Silva Júnior discute a revirada pragmática, bem como seus desdobramentos, com vistas a um modelo de língua(gem) que concebe os usos linguísticos em seus contextos. Por último, a Profa. Dra. Lúcia Helena Medeiros da Cunha Tavares articula a língua e suas relações de poder, com destaque para o discurso como prática social, marcado pelas subjetividades e disputas identitárias fincadas na história. Essas perspectivas teóricas – como mapas e modelos – não foram escolhidas aleatoriamente, mas por serem bastante recorrentes nas disciplinas de teorias linguísticas que estão presentes nos cursos de graduação, mestrado e doutorado em Letras e Linguística; e, além disso, por serem trabalhadas no contexto do PPCL.
