    Description: The fire brigade was the first to dispatch emergency teams to the disaster area and provide assistance day and night, thanks to its omnipresence and versatility. This meant that local, voluntary firefighters were probably among the first rescue workers to fall victim. This contribution thrusts the fire brigade as a rescue service during the flood into the spotlight. This shows both the initial and the subsequent assistance provided by local fire brigades and additional units from outside the disaster area. Research has shown that the role played by the Dutch fire service – not to mention the Italian fire brigade –was massive and hugely significant, especially considering they worked under very dire circumstances and with limited resources.

    Description: In 1869, Dutch military doctor Cornelis de Mooy invented the litter, ‘raderbaar’, a stretcher on wheels. It was a major improvement in several ways compared with the old brancards. It was comfortable for patients and only one hospital soldier was needed to move the wounded. Starting with the Aceh Wars (1873-1910), it became a huge medical success in the military as well as the civilian world. It was gradually replaced around the 1920s. The litter – and some other inventions he made – hugely reduced the wounded soldiers’ suffering and because of this De Mooy was praised by many as a great humanitarian, but in fact it was military efficiency that drove him. A better, swifter and less strenuous way of transporting the wounded was a means of improving military capabilities.

    Description: This article contains the personal account of Sergeant Reinder van de Put of the national police force, based on his correspondence after he was sent to the area affected by the 1953 North Sea flood. It first focuses on the unique letters and photographs that Reinder sent home from where he was deployed in Nieuw-Helvoet. These documents provide an insight into the national police’s work there and his personal experiences. The article describes what the national police faced one month on from the disaster and also provides an insight into the impact of the disaster on Reinder and his colleagues in Doornspijk, who were very close with each other – not only in how they stood together in solidarity but also how they supported each other.

    Description: After the occupation by German troops in May 1940, the German authorities demanded the Dutch fire service be remodelled in line with their own example. In Germany, firefighting had been a police task since 1938. Fire service columns were formed to stop the spread of large-scale fires after air attacks. A great deal of organisation was needed to deploy the large number of pumps, men and large quantities of water. In the Netherlands two mobile columns were formed, which ultimately comprised about 1200 men in two large units, each consisting of four companies with a total of 223 vehicles. The firefighters were trained in the German way and became highly disciplined. The units were deployed after air raids on Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Haarlem in 1943, and Nijmegen and The Hague in 1944. From February 1944, however, the Dutch units were also sent to help in different German cities under attack. The Dutch fire service columns were stationed in eight depots in The Hague, Rotterdam, Baarn, Weesp, Deurne and Winterswijk. The last of the Dutch column was disbanded and sent to the German Fire Service School in Beeskow near Berlin in September 1944.

    Description: Between 1924 and 1979, 50 municipal police forces in the Netherlands were involved in transporting injured people by motor vehicle. As well as genuine ambulances, they also used auxiliary ambulances or multi-purpose vehicles, i.e. cars fitted with a stretcher. This task fell under their duty to maintain public order and deal with road accidents, which was entrusted to the police. During the German occupation of the Netherlands between May 1940 and May 1945, the police continued its task of transporting wounded people. After the Second World War, several police forces purchased multi-purpose vehicles, especially in smaller towns. Their busiest period came in the 1950s and 60s as a wave of traffic accidents swept across the Netherlands. In 1979, the role of the police in transporting wounded people came to an end because ambulance care had professionalized and the police wanted to focus on traditional tasks.

    Description: On 13 March 1908, the National Bureau for the Collection of Data on the Trade in Women and Girls was founded. The 47-year-old H.J.A. Simons de Ruyter was appointed National Police Commissioner. He proved to be the best person for the job owing to his passion for gathering and recording vital data, his knowledge of languages and his dedicated, helpful and generous personality. The Bureau and the police worked with women’s organisations to monitor activities and carry out checks at stations and ports where women and girls who could be exposed to a lewd lifestyle might be travelling. After legislation on morality was passed in 1911, the Bureau was given an additional task in 1914 to tackle trade in lewd publications. After the First World War erupted that year, there was not much more to do at the Bureau, which led Simons de Ruyter to support the immigration authorities in Amsterdam at his own request. This consisted mainly of finding accommodation, providing healthcare, food, clothing and financial assistance and helping to repatriate Belgian refugees.

    Description: The Cold War was a tense time. The Netherlands took precautions to protect its people from potential disasters, in particular nuclear threats. One crucial aspect of this was the establishment of the Civil Defence Corps. The organisation played a key role in setting up command stations and training centres, such as the one in Overvoorde, Rijswijk, near The Hague, which ran exercises and training to prepare people for possible disasters. From large practice ruins to advanced alarm systems, the complex was fully equipped to deal with a broad range of threats. Although the threat of a nuclear attack subsided and the Civil Defence was officially disbanded in 1985, these command stations retained their importance. Many of them have since been repurposed, from storage sites to museums. The bunkers in Overvoorde now serve as an educational centre under the management of Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre. By preserving these sites, we can ensure that future generations can learn from the past and the sacrifices that were made for their safety.

This yearbook focuses on the extensive and leading collection of Korpora, Public Safety Heritage, in operation since 1 August 2022. The collection is currently formed by the national collections of the Dutch police and fire brigade, the Dutch Red Army, the former Protection of Population and heritage in the fields of crisis management, disaster relief, ambulance services and first aid. Korpora holds hundreds of thousands of objects from the 16th century onwards. Safe offers an insight into this fascinating collection. Each issue contains easy-to-read, scholarly articles on the various subfields. It also focuses on important and special acquisitions.

    Description: In 2022, Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre opened – tasked with acquiring, managing and exhibiting physical and digital collections on public safety in the Netherlands. Today, Korpora includes the national collections of the Dutch police and the fire service, the Dutch Red Cross and the former Civil Defence service. Korpora’s roots go back to the early 20th century, when firefighting and police enthusiasts began collecting heritage items from these organisations and putting them on display. Despite setbacks due to a lack of funding and a suitable home for the objects, as well as a lack of historical awareness within those organisations, a great deal of heritage items still managed to be preserved. Thanks to the dozen or so foundations – some already in existence, some set up later – the heritage has been preserved, expanded and ultimately culminated in Korpora’s rich and astounding subcollections.

    Description: Since poison gas was used during World War I, long-range bombers had been introduced and tensions were rising in Europe, the Air Raid Precautions Act was passed in the Netherlands in 1936. The legislation emphasised individual responsibility for self-protection. This meant that citizens had to buy a gas mask themselves. The Gas Mask Decree (1937) required all gas mask models for Civil Defence units and civilians to be approved by the Dutch State Arsenal. Facepieces and filter canisters had to be marked with the State Acceptance Number and year(s) of approval and production. This paper identifies and describes the gas masks used by police, fire brigades, Civil Defence units and individual citizens, 1931-1940. Three models are heavy, regular Army box respirators, whose filter containers are worn in a haversack on the chest. All the other models are lighter civilian gas masks, with an easily replaceable screw-on filter canister attached to the facepiece. The gas masks were carried in a basic satchel or cylindrical metal case. Two Dutch-made gas masks have a peculiar design: the Veritex gas mask’s facepiece has a swimcap type hood; the Hevea-Electro Model 128 gas mask’s facepiece has no outlet valve. Air is inhaled and exhaled through the filter canister.

    Description: During the Second World War, crime rates skyrocketed in the occupied Netherlands, particularly concerning theft and other offences against property. These crimes were committed by both those who had been convicted in the prewar period and previously ‘well-behaved’ citizens. Some of them felt forced to steal by the circumstances, others took advantage of the situation for their own benefit. How did suspects justify their acts? Did they consider theft during the occupation to be a crime, or not? And how did Dutch judges pass judgement concerning property crimes? Did they have compassion for stealing compatriots, or did they consider theft in times of scarcity and increasing poverty to be a great danger, which should be severely punished? In this book, historian Jan Julia Zurné uses case files and verdicts by Dutch courts to provide insight into the lives, experiences and motivations of wartime thieves.

    Description: For numerous public interests there are supervisory bodies, such as the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Drawing on the multidisciplinary Transformative Equality Approach that was developed in the UU Gender and Diversity Hub, we argue that it is high time to establish a Netherlands Authority for Emancipation (NEMA). Rather than putting the onus for emancipation and equality on those who suffer from inequality, the government should take ownership of inequality problems by establishing a supervisory body for effective compliance and enforcement of equal treatment legislation.

    Description: It remains very exceptional when highly gifted women musicians are crowned maestra, conductor of a symphony orchestra. There are various explanations for this deprivation. Contextualised in historical and statistical data, this article zooms in on what I refer to as the ‘baton barrier’. Not so much of an invisible boundary as has become known as the glass ceiling, preventing women their upward mobility, for ages, this musical barrier has been in our face: literally, the image, the portrayal of the traditionally masculine orchestral director.

    Description: This article presents a close reading of gothic features in Simone Atangana Bekono’s novella Zo hoog de zon stond (‘As high as the sun stood’, 2022). This analysis serves as a way to comment on recent academic debates about the end, or ends, of critical theory, more specifically about ways of reading: surface reading or symptomatic reading. Supporting Esther Peeren’s recent plea for a return to symptomatic reading, I argue that a clearcut opposition between surface and depth is untenable.

    Description: During Antwerp's Golden Age, the city replaced Bruges as the primary trading hub of Western Europe. Antwerp transformed from a medium-sized Brabantine town to an unparalleled metropolis in the Low Countries with over 100.000 inhabitants. Although little is known regarding the impact of this transformation on the city's governance, Antwerp serves as an intriguing and exceptional case study. Unlike other trading metropolises such as sixteenth-century Lyon or seventeenth-century Amsterdam, where merchants increasingly occupied positions in the city council, this was not the case in Antwerp. This book ‘Macht in de Metropool’ reconstructs the compositions of Antwerp’s city council between 1400 and 1550. It examines the profile of the different aldermen and mayors and how they evolved over time. Furthermore, the research analyses the real estate investments of this group and their relationship with key groups in society such as the merchants, the nobility, and the central administration.

    Description: This article engages in genealogical inquiry into Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), to gain deeper insight into the multiple semantic layers of this cultural icon. I argue that the ‘roetpiet’ (soot Pete) or chimney sweep is rooted in at least as solid an iconological tradition as that of the Moorish child slave. I infer some suggestions for non-offensive Sinterklaas celebrations from this historical excursion. While Zwarte Piet in his Moorish guise is indeed a flawed and racist trace of colonial slavery, his chimney sweep connotations may actually be of value to the cultural remembrance of the by now largely forgotten history of child labour that was so crucial to the early industrialization in Europe, and often still is to economies in the Global South.

    Description: In this chapter Rosemarie Buikema elaborates on how decolonial feminist artists and scholars are engaged in knowledge production by means of deploying a poetics of recycling as a way to re-orientate themselves towards the relation between the subject and the object of knowledge, matter and form, signifier and signifed. Buikema analyses the work of El Anatsui and Nandipha Mntambo to illustrate the power of this poetics of recycling and gives the example of an exhibition in which the Museum of Equality and Difference (MOED) re-curated the cultural heritage of abolitionism, giving centre stage to the black, previously enslaved woman Sojourner Truth, rather than the white Dutchman Nicolaas Beets. She concludes that the collective fijield of decolonial feminism envelops engaged scholars and artists like a sensitive skin that continuously responds to the context in which it fnds itself.

    Description: De Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog is in Nederland lange tijd aangeduid met versluierende termen als ‘politionele acties’. In werkelijkheid was het een ware oorlog waarin Nederlandse troepen met moderne wapens de strijd aangingen. De inzet van artillerie, bommenwerpers en scheepsgeschut werd niet geschuwd in het streven de gewapende ‘opstand’ de kop in te drukken. Wat waren de gevolgen van bombardementen en beschietingen met dergelijk grof geschut? In welke gevallen werden deze middelen ingezet en in hoeverre werd gepoogd burgerslachtoffers te voorkomen? Voor het eerst is op systematische wijze de toepassing van vooral artillerie en luchtstrijdkrachten in de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd onderzocht. Grof geschut biedt zowel statistische overzichten als analyses van gevechten waarbij op grote schaal zware wapens zijn ingezet. Daarbij komt ook de vraag aan de orde hoe de inzet van deze middelen zich verhield tot het geweldsgebruik in het algemeen. Deze studie vormt een onmisbare bijdrage aan onze kennis over de aard en omvang van extreem geweldgebruik door de Nederlandse krijgsmacht in de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

    Description: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought.

    Description: How to think philosophically about religion? The separation of church and state takes form in the nineteenth century. In public universities in the Netherlands, systematic, church-related theology is replaced by philosophy of religion. As a window on academic thinking about faith, Willem B. Drees, Leiden University's last professor of philosophy of religion, reads the work of his predecessors. They were mostly modernists, who expected to find their footing in the use of reason, in historical knowledge about religions, or in personal faith. After World War I, faith is perceived more as a wager, to trust that life is meaningful. Later, we see agnostic reticence that is religiously motivated, because God is always greater than we think, a mystery. And scholarly reticence, because in academic terms nothing definitive can be said about God. Do we thus see a development from modern certitude to charged silence?

    Description: In this essay I discuss Buikema’s ideas about the specific function of literature in times of social upheaval and political violence. Buikema resists the current tendency to reduce engaged novels to their political views and statements about the world. To their author’s intentions, basically. A literary analysis has to do justice to the ways in which political themes are represented, which largely escape authorial control. Close (inter)textual analysis can arrive at different experiences of a work of art. Buikema illustrated this conviction with an analysis of Coetzee’s Disgrace. I continue her analysis and read Disgrace for its stunning literary representation of hegemonic masculinity and how a white macho man is transformed and healed. Women and blacks guide him in this process.

This study examines this violent confrontation for intelligence in detail. To what extent have the Dutch services used torture and other forms of extreme violence? And why? How accurate was the intelligence they gathered about the Indonesian forces? What effects did their reports have on Dutch actions in the field – and on the decision-making of higher echelons? The tug-of-war over the crucial cooperation of the population and the extremely violent or otherwise violent actions of the Indonesian intelligence services are also discussed. The course of the espionage war is explained based on the interactions between the Dutch and Indonesian services, which continuously tried to outsmart each other. This book shows that this grim and complex struggle behind the scenes had a major – and so far underexposed – impact on the Dutch-Indonesian war.

    Description: In this contribution Mineke Bosch connects to Rosemarie Buikema’s work with the Museum of Equality and Difference which aims at inspiring museum and exhibition curators to tell more complex stories that include postcolonial and gender perspectives. Bosch focuses on the importance of objects for the history of women and gender, and the value of historical knowledge about women and gender for museums and heritage institutions. She does so by discussing many aspects of the making of the exhibition Strijd! 100 jaar vrouwenkiesrecht (Struggle! 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage) in the Groninger Museum in 2019. The exhibition through its objects not only changed the story of women’s suffrage, it also enlarged ‘suffrage literacy’. This in turn led to the recognition and acceptance of objects from this historical episode by museums.

Dit boek beschrijft hoe de redacties en de uitgevers van professionele tijdschriften zich hebben ingespannen om hun rol als informatiemakelaar goed te vervullen. Verder laat het zien hoe zij hun product voortdurend hebben aangepast aan de steeds hogere eisen van lezers wat betreft toegankelijkheid en vormgeving. Ten laatste is er aandacht voor de wijze waarop zij steeds de bedrijfseconomische voorwaarden hebben vervuld om de continuïteit van hun werk te verzekeren. Zonder deze professionele tijdschriften was Nederland niet geworden wat het nu is.

    Description: Over the last forty years, ‘the world’ has entered ‘the museum’. Collections and presentations that were supposed to be self-evident had to be reconsidered. This chapter demonstrates that two more or less simultaneous influences shaped this process in Dutch museums. On the one hand, many Dutch museums were transformed from institutions of the local or national government into independent charities and forced to take greater responsibility for their own finances. On the other hand, the social exclusivity of the collections and presentations (dominated by white males) was questioned. The article describes how museums dealt with these challenges and their sometimes contradictory implications.

    Description: Reading the news about Iran today one can hardly imagine that relations between the Netherlands and Iran were excellent until 1979. Mohammed-Reza Pahlavi, the last shah of Persia, was known in The Netherlands as a visionary and reformer. Persia was represented as a mythical land with an ancient civilization. The Dutch royal family enjoyed visiting the shah, and large and small Dutch companies were successful in Iran. When in the 1970s awareness spread about repression under the shah, the Dutch government was faced with difficult choices. How could these relations be continued, now that public opinion had turned against it? The Dutch government decided to ignore the criticisms, and firmly held on to the idea of the shah as an enlightened despot. As such, it did not see the Iranian Revolution coming, and suffered the consequences.

    Description: Some multiple-used city churches are neither fully in use by a faith community nor fully allocated to new forms of use, but are shared by both a (protestant) faith community and secular users. By sharing the church building, the diverse users and communities get in touch with each other. Eventual (slight) offenses between them can often be traced back to their respective relationships with the church building. Each church building has a specific history of the use of the building, its own architecture, a specific Protestant community, a chosen legal model and a particular profile for multiple use. Through the multiple use and the restorations, the pre-Reformation Catholic past is tangibly brought back. Those involved realise that they depend on each other in their efforts to keep the church building in good condition. The analysis of the interactions between users concentrates on the tangible aspects of the process of de-churching.

Monuments and burial grounds are the silent witnesses of the battle and the stories of the war are still circulating. Remco Raben and Peter Romijn argue in this book that the way the Netherlands has long viewed the war in Indonesia has its origins in the language and the manipulation of information during that war. They investigate the mentality of administration and politics in Indonesia and the Netherlands and trace the path that knowledge about violence has taken, from the villages and fields in Indonesia to the desks of administrators, politicians and journalists in the Netherlands. This book shows how the cover-up of violence in Indonesia worked. It explains why war crimes and other large-scale violence against the Indonesian population were tolerated, how the army was able to dominate the provision of information about the war, how administrative mechanisms and mentalities promoted the concealment, how Dutch politicians looked away, and how Indonesian voices were systematically were ignored.

    Description: This book tells the story of Utrecht University’s colonial past. Ever since the university was founded in 1636, its scholars and students have been involved in various activities in the Dutch colonies of the West and East Indies. There was a great interest in the world of the 'other' far away: the natural world as well as their cultures, languages and religious systems. The basic assumption always was: we are 'developed', they are 'not yet developed'. Superiority served as guiding principle. By the end of the nineteenth century, Utrecht’s research activities in the colonies were dominated by biology, medicine, geology, and physical anthropology/anatomy. It was understood to be 'pure research' in the colonies. But it was pure colonial research. The University benefited enormously from those research activities. The latest phase of 'university development cooperation' (since the 1980s), was to some extent a continuation of that approach.

    Description: Framed against Timothy Clark’s comments on the potency of ecocriticism, in this contribution I first zoom in on how cultural critique according to Rosemarie Buikema can contribute to discussions on matters of common concern. I then sketch two lines of argument that emerge from her work: firstly, the way in which art and culture can break through societal silences and, secondly, the importance of history and the past for cultural production in the present. Both issues are important where it concerns climate change and the Anthropocene.     Description: The validation of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) was carried out. In the first, a potassium acid phthalate standard and a spectrophotometric detection method were used, and for the second, the reading of samples was implemented by membrane electrode, a standard glutamic acid-glucose solution and incubation for 5 days at 20 ± 1ºC. Parameters were determined as linearity, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, limit of detection and quantification. It was demonstrated through experimental design and statistical procedures that methods can be used with sensitivity and confidence. Detection and quantification limits of 46.2 and 100 mg/L for COD and 2.78 and 4.71 mg / L for BOD were reached. In both tests a coefficient of variation for repeatability and reproducibility between 0.001 - 0.055% and 0.001 - 0.022% was evidenced; in accuracy, error and recovery percentages were obtained between 0.04 - 3.39% and 95.0 and 103% respectively.

Se determinaron parámetros como linealidad, precisión, exactitud, sensibilidad, límite de detección y cuantificación. Se demostró mediante el diseño experimental y los procedimientos estadísticos que se pueden emplear los métodos con sensibilidad y confianza. Se alcanzaron límites de detección y cuantificación de 46.2 y 100 mg/L para DQO y 2.78 y 4.71 mg/L para DBO. En ambas pruebas se evidenció un coeficiente de variación para repetibilidad y reproducibilidad entre el 0.001 - 0.055% y 0.001 – 0.022%; en la exactitud se obtuvieron porcentajes de error y recuperación entre el 0.04 – 3.39% y 95.0 y 103% respectivamente.

    Description: In this article, the experience of approaching the characterization of afro-descendant, indigenous and functional diversity early childhood, attended by twenty (20) institutions of initial education in Santiago de Cali, is presented. In this action-participation research, the voices of families, teachers, support staff, boys and girls on differential attention and attention to diversity are recognized, through the implementation of participant observations, workshops with teachers and educational agents, family referents and semi-structured interviews with the children benefiting from the centers responsible for initial education in the city. Additionally, a documentary analysis of the Operational Plans for Comprehensive Care (POAI) was made. By way of problematization and contribution to the discussion about inclusion in childhood educational contexts, research results are raised, as well as some issues to work for the strengthening of initial education with a differential approach, where it is considered vital for child development, address as a transversal axis the theme of identity and respect for diversity.

    Description: En este artículo, se plantea la experiencia de acercamiento a la caracterización de la primera infancia afrodescendiente, indígena y con diversidad funcional, atendida en 20 instituciones de Educación Inicial de Santiago de Cali. En esta investigación tipo acción-participación, se reconocen las voces de las familias, maestras, personal de apoyo, niños y niñas, sobre atención diferencial y atención a la diversidad, mediante la implementación de observaciones participantes, talleres con maestras, maestros y agentes educativos, referentes familiares y entrevistas semiestructuradas con los niños y las niñas beneficiarios de los centros encargados de la Educación Inicial en la ciudad. Adicionalmente, se hizo un análisis documental de los Planes Operativos para la Atención Integral (POAI). A modo de problematización y aporte a la discusión sobre la inclusión en contextos educativos de infancia, se plantean los resultados de investigación, así como algunos temas a trabajar para el fortalecimiento de la Educación Inicial con enfoque diferencial, donde se considera vital para el desarrollo infantil, abordar como eje transversal la temática de la identidad y el respeto a la diversidad.

    Description: Como investigadora, Carmiña ha realizado una permanente labor por develar el aporte de las mujeres en la literatura lo cual lo ha logrado en obras como “La mujer protagonista en la narrativa colombiana”, 1992 “Guerra y paz en Colombia. Las mujeres escriben, premio Casa de las Américas, en el 2004 y “la Narrativa femenina en Colombia” en el 2006. Parte de su creación y de la vida que da a las mujeres es el libro Escritoras latinoamericanas: Razón y locura. Él está conformado por dos ensayos: el primero es una presentación general de algunas pensadoras latinoamericanas. El segundo es un recorrido por la narrativa femenina en Colombia y otros países, particularmente la narrativa focalizada en La locura. Como ella lo dice, “este libro es producto de sus investigaciones permanentes alrededor de la expresión y discursividad femenina en América latina y en Colombia” (Navia, 2012, p. 10).

Llamaremos así a toda convicción que haya llegado a ser para quien la posee -o la padece una referencia de su propia identidad; algo que por lo tanto no puede ser perdido -por ejemplo superado- sin que se abra inmediatamente la cuestión esencial de la angustia: ¿Quién soy yo ahora que no pienso así, ahora que no creo en esto? Tal vez convenga dejar de lado momentáneamente el carácter mismo de esta convicción, su grado de elaboración y coherencia, las condiciones de su formación, para destacar solamente ese rasgo decisivo: que ha llegado a ser un referente de identidad. Esto nos permite indicar, para comenzar, que en un sentido fundamental todos somos dogma-ticos, que no es posible tomar una alegre distancia sobre el dogmatismo, sin hacernos toda clase de ilusiones sobre la economía de nuestro pensamiento. Dogmático fue ya nuestro ingreso en el mundo: una palabra incuestionable designó, valoró y configuró la imagen primera de la realidad y de nosotros mismos; la palabra de un ser supremo objeto de todo, de la identificación, de la necesidad, del amor, del deseo, de la demanda, de la hostilidad. Cuando más tarde, los monstruos sagrados de la infancia se diferencian y relativizan y, finalmente, ya no puede negarse del todo que son en cierto modo, señores comunes y corrientes, la nostalgia de una palabra fundadora sigue operando y puede buscarse y encontrarse en el mundo alguien a quien adjudicársela; o, lo que es más peligroso, tratar de negar que estamos privados de ella por medio de una autonomización maníaca e intentar producirla nosotros mismos. Y por desgracia no siempre sin éxito, puesto que hay muchos que la buscan.

    Description: Varias son las vetas desde donde se han abordado la expresión “lenguaje cinematográfico”. No obstante, como introducción para después abordar tal expresión con mayor profundidad desde lo que nos interesa, podemos destacar dos. La primera tiene relación con el deslumbramiento y asombro que el cine mudo, a principios del siglo XX, ocasionaba en algunos artistas y estetas, así como las posibilidades que éstos últimos veían en aquel. El cine, como una nueva forma de expresión, surgió y fue aceptado por las mayorías y por algunas minorías. Esto implicaba necesariamente una innovadora manera de abordar y vivir la experiencia estética, hasta ese momento anclada y validada socialmente en la cultura élite, cuyo medio de expresión más sobresaliente era el lenguaje verbal y escrito.

    Description: Entre los estudiosos de la historia colonial y aún de la republicana es común que la sola mención de la palabra resguardo se asocie con las tierras comunales de cultivo asignadas a las comunidades indígenas de la Nueva Granada durante el período colonial. El concepto de resguardo es incluso atípico dentro de la terminología colonial que se utilizó en el resto de Hispanoamérica, aunque no la asignación de tierras a las comunidades indígenas sometidas. En México, por ejemplo, existió este ordenamiento con el nombre de fundo legal. Esta era el área que rodeaba el caserío indígena, pertenecía a los barrios del respectivo pueblo y se dividía en parcelas individuales, que no eran de propiedad del comunero al que quedaban asignadas, pero que podían continuar en posesión de sus descendientes.

    Description: Históricamente, educación es fundamento y apropiación cultural del mundo, como también, tiempo vivido en el porvenir de la naturaleza humana. Con ella, se forman y se diferencian las relaciones interpersonales y las condiciones en las que es expresado el lenguaje en comunidad. Desde esta perspectiva, se puede considerar el concepto de educación concebido etimológicamente por los griegos bajo el vocablo phyo derivado de verbo physis que significa llegar a ser, producir engendrar o hacer crecer. Asimismo, bajo este rótulo, se hace evidente la afinidad establecida entre physis y paideia, devenidas educación y saber, y en tanto, saber es condición que se hace humanidad y educación, institución se vuelve pedagogía en torno al fundamento del ser que, en sí misma, se puede implementar como criterio para el deber ser. En estas relaciones, se expone además el logos como dispositivo de pensamiento en el sistema educativo, con el que, también se puede determinar el discurso que se halla vinculado tanto al fundamento intersubjetivo como a la forma de representación en los adolescentes que, con frecuencia, se hace impronta lingüística capaz de ocasionar formas de representación y percepción simbólica, las cuales constituyen mediante el propio discurso el sistema de significación que le confieren a través de su propio comportamiento las diferentes actividades y escenarios de la realidad

    Description: Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium identified by Robert Koch in 1882 and that after a little more than a century, is recognized as the leading cause of death due to an infectious disease. TB usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other organs. Because its transmission is from person to person by inhalation of droplet-containing-bacteria suspended in the air, this disease is a public health concern. Daily, health workers are exposed to numerous hazards, including close contact with infectious patients and their potentially contaminated environment. It is estimated that about 1,000 health workers contract HIV,for reasons of their work and it is presumed that cases of tuberculosis, exceeds this number. Among the factors that explain the risk of infection with the consequent development of active TB are: the number of patients with TB treated, the function or occupation, the workplace, the delay in the diagnosis of patients and most importantly the lack of biosafety policies and measures in work environments, which facilitates direct exposure. We present here a current review of the status of occupational TB in the city of Cali during 2015 to 2017. This work was supported by the city’s municipal health secretariat and the TB program. We emphasize the importance of continuing the evaluation of this disease in vulnerable populations such as health workers and evaluate the preventive measures suggested by international agencies (Pan American Health Organization and Center for Disease Control) to mitigate the impact of TB in the city.

    Description: La tuberculosis es una enfermedad infecciosa crónica, producida por Mycobacterium tuberculosis, una bacteria identificada por Robert Koch en 1882 y que posterior a un poco más de un siglo, es reconocida como la causa líder de muertes debidas a una enfermedad infecciosa. Por lo general, tiene afectación pulmonar, pero también puede afectar otros órganos. Debido a que su transmisión es de persona a persona por inhalación de partículas contaminados con el microorganismo que están suspendidos en el ambiente, esta enfermedad en un problema de salud pública. A diario, los trabajadores de la salud se encuentran expuestos a numerosos peligros, siendo los contaminantes biológicos uno de los principales riesgos. A nivel mundial, se estima que cerca de 1.000 trabajadores de la salud contraen VIH en el mundo y se presume que los casos de tuberculosis ocupacional supera esta cifra. Entre los factores que explican el riesgo de infección con el consecuente desarrollo de TB activa se destacan: la cantidad de pacientes con TB atendidos, la función u ocupación, el sitio de trabajo, el retraso en el diagnóstico de los pacientes y lo más importante la falta de políticas y medidas de bioseguridad en los entornos laborales, que facilita la exposición sea directa. Presentamos aquí una revisión actual del estado de la TB ocupacional en la ciudad de Cali entre 2015 y 2017. Este trabajo fue apoyado por la Secretaría Municipal de Salud de la ciudad y el programa de TB. Resaltamos la importancia de continuar la evaluación de esta enfermedad en población vulnerable como son los trabajadores de la salud y evaluar las medidas preventivas sugeridas por instancias internacionales (Organización Panamericana de la Salud y el Center for Disease Control) para mitigar el impacto de la TB en la ciudad.

Lograr la Certificación de Calidad y mantenerla, es uno de los principales objetivos educativos en nuestra sociedad. La presente ponencia propone indagar por los impactos que tienen los principios de los sistemas de gestión de Calidad en la subjetividad de los niños y adolescentes en las instituciones educativas. Se trata de una crítica desde una perspectiva psicoanalítica, que cuestiona los efectos de poner al ser humano en el lugar del producto, del objeto de una empresa. Esta ponencia plantea que los sistemas de gestión de calidad corresponden al discurso capitalista actual, que son implementados en los colegios con el fin de garantizar la sostenibilidad de la institución, desconociendo que sus ideales están en contra de la constitución de la subjetividad del ser humano. Planteo que el discurso capitalista ha puesto en auge una fascinación generalizada por el discurso psiquiátrico en los colegios, se trata de una manera de taponar al sujeto, y niega la posibilidad de que la educación se constituya en un escenario simbólico donde el sujeto pueda emerger.     Description: El objetivo de la incorporación de los derechos de participación en la Constitución ecuatoriana del 2008 era la necesidad de establecer una mayor relación entre Estado y sociedad, es decir que el ciudadano sea parte en la toma de decisiones sobre los asuntos de interés público. Específicamente en ese sentido Boaventura de Sousa, plantea que la democracia participativa viene a ser complementaria de la representativa (Santos, 2004). Esto con la finalidad de intentar superar la crisis que sufría el modelo representativo liberal (Santos, 2004). Así, el constituyente ecuatoriano instituyo nuevos derechos, garantías e instituciones con ese propósito. No obstante, a nueve años de esa promesa constituyente, existen muchas críticas, y detractores de esta. En este trabajo, me propongo revisar algunas de estas objeciones, desde una perspectiva analítica y critica.

    Description: El estudio de los imaginarios sociales ha tenido un crecimiento metodologías y disciplinas desde los que ha sido abordado son tan ricos y variados que abarcarlos en una sola publicación resulta imposible. Existen, sin embargo, algunos trabajos que han buscado realizar un estado del arte sobre el tema, por lo que nos es posible dedicar unas palabras a ello. Aunque el tema ha sido abordado desde diferentes corrientes teóricas, quizá la que más impacto ha tenido en la tradición de habla hispano-portuguesa es la de la escuela francesa, y especialmente la obra de Cornelius Castoriadis. En su libro La institución imaginaria de la sociedad, Castoriadis presenta de manera más completa su concepto de imaginario social, dividiendo éste en dos partes. La primera, proveniente de los artículos que había publicado anteriormente en la revista Socialismo o Barbarie, representa una dura crítica al marxismo y a lo que él llama la lógica-ontológica heredada, mientras que la segunda es donde Castoriadis presenta de manera más detallada su concepto de imaginario social utilizando elementos como lo histórico-social, legein y teukhein y los magmas de significaciones (Castoriadis, 2013). Dichos conceptos aparecen de una u otra manera en la mayor parte de los estudios sobre imaginarios que se tienen en la región.

    Description: Este es un proyecto interdisciplinario e interinstitucional entre la Ingeniería de Sistemas y la Comunicación Social, la Universidad de San Buenaventura de Cali USBC (por parte de los Ingenieros) y la Universidad Autónoma de Occidente UAO (por parte de los Comunicadores); el proyecto en cuestión se gestó con el fin de dar apoyo al Laboratorio de Investigación para el Desarrollo de la Ingeniería de Software (LIDIS), de la USBC, en un trabajo posdoctoral consistente en el estudio comparativo entre el Cálculo textual: PiCO y el Cálculo visual: GraPiCO, los cuales hacen parte del programa E_GraPiCO. Este apoyo fue necesario para conocer bajo qué condiciones es más adecuado un lenguaje que otro y qué mejoras requieren. El objetivo desde la comunicación durante el proceso fue socializar los conceptos técnicos básicos propios de estos dos lenguajes de programación (PiCO Y GraPiCO) por medio de material comunicativo audiovisual que, a su vez, serviría como una herramienta didáctica mediadora entre los exponentes del proyecto y el auditorio.

    Description: De Friese adel van de late middeleeuwen opereerde in een niet-feodaal gebied dat lange tijd geen landsheer kende. Hadden de leden, hoofdelingen genaamd, zich uit de boerenstand omhooggewerkt of vormden ze vanouds een gesloten stand? Hoe zat het met hun vermogen? Dit boek zoomt in op Rienck Hemmema en zijn vrouw Ath Roorda. Zij exploiteerden in de jaren 1569-1573 een boerderij in Hitzum onder Franeker. Uit Riencks Rekenboeck blijkt dat hij geen eigenerfde boer was, maar een edelman met een royale levensstijl en meer inkomsten dan uit die ene boerderij. Een ruimtelijke reconstructie van zijn bezit en dat van zijn voorgeslacht toont hoe agrarisch kapitaal per generatie werd gevormd en overgedragen. Dit beeld wordt getoetst aan een Quote 200 uit 1513 en huwelijksakten uit 1450-1550. Een belangrijke conclusie is dat de Friese adel getalsmatig omvangrijk was, met veel families die leefden van twee of drie boerderijen. De figuur van de edelman-boer kwam dus vaak voor.

    Description: Cali se caracteriza por ser la segunda ciudad en América Latina con mayor población afrodescendiente; ello como resultado, en gran parte, de los procesos migratorios provenientes de municipios como Tumaco, Barbacoas, Buenaventura, y el sur de Chocó. Los factores encadenados a tales fenómenos de desplazamiento han sido principalmente los conflictos socio-políticos que ha vivido nuestro país. Adicionalmente, el imaginario de una ciudad que ofrece oportunidades de empleo, educación y mejores condiciones de vida, también son aspectos que han influenciado la migración hacia la urbe, expectativas que se han enfrentado a la desesperanza de una ciudad no preparada para atender a los nuevos habitantes.

    Description: “Para la próxima clase me deben traer un ensayo del texto leído, por favor, cumplir con todos los criterios que tiene este tipo de texto”. Estas palabras las escuchamos cotidianamente, a veces con ensayos, otras veces con una reseña, un informe, una síntesis y otros textos que en la vida universitaria son la práctica y aplicabilidad del conocimiento. Pero una parte que no queda tan explícita o en la cual realizamos ciertos supuestos, es saber si el estudiante sabe cómo desarrollar un determinado tipo de texto. Cuando hablamos de los criterios de escritura, estos a veces se desvanecen en su claridad de acuerdo a la noción que tenga cada docente de esa tipología, lo cual a veces genera confusión en los estudiantes cuando estos criterios varían de un profesor a otro. Otra de las dificultades es que ciertas tipologías textuales tienen unas líneas muy delgadas que las dividen una de otra, por lo que puede pasar que iniciamos escribiendo un texto expositivo y terminemos en un ensayo o viceversa, o nos piden una síntesis y el resultado es un resumen.

    Description: Esta investigación está encaminada a mostrar algunas situaciones de deserción, paso obligado para desarrollar el proyecto Procesos de comprensión lectora y Programa de Permanencia Estudiantil PIPE en la Universidad Santiago de Cali, que se propuso para diseñar e implementar estrategias desde el Área de Lenguaje1 , teniendo en cuenta que en ella se consolidan los cursos comunes de Comprensión y Producción Textual I y II, cuyo carácter es obligatorio para todos los programas acad. Este fenómeno de la deserción se presenta en los diferentes niveles de las instituciones educativas, pero cada una de ellas –por iniciativa propia o siguiendo las directrices del MEN (Ministerio de Educación Nacional)- tiene la responsabilidad de generar estrategias para reducir los casos de abandono de los proyectos académicos de sus estudiantes. La Universidad Santiago de Cali también se suma a la autoevaluación, indagación y resolución de problemáticas atinentes a la deserción académica. Los estudios realizados al respecto en esta institución educativa mostraron, como resultado, que el segundo indicador de deserción académica lo representa la dificultad para acceder al conocimiento por deficiencias en los procesos de comprensión lectora, razón por la cual se reflejó un alto porcentaje de estudiantes que se retiran por no comprender los textos que les entregan sus profesores

    Description: A través del tiempo la bien llamada internacionalización, ha logrado captar el interés de los empresarios colombianos. La tendencia del mercado genera la necesidad de conocer la dinámica del comercio exterior, por lo tanto se requiere tener unas bases sólidas que permitan a las compañías dirigirse a mercados externos diferentes a su lugar de origen. A pesar que en Colombia las Pymes representan un alto porcentaje de la actividad productiva, indus-trial y manufacturera del país, la gran mayoría no cuenta con las competencias requeridas para incursionar en el mercado internacional. Según ANIF (2016) en la gran encuesta pyme se identificó que en promedio, aproximadamente, el 80% de las pymes no realizaron exportaciones durante el 2016, ni muestran interés por hacerlo, esto en consecuencia a la desarticulación entre la acade-mia, la industria y el gobierno.

    Description: Las razones por las que los países comercializan se basan en la diferenciación entre los recursos y la tecnología, cada país especializarse en lo que hacen relativamente bien y en aprovechar las economías de escala. El comercio in-ternacional está compuesto por el comercio intraindustrial e interindustrial. La importancia relativa de estos dos tipos de comercio, depende de lo simi-lares que sean los países involucrados. Así, es más probable que el comercio intraindustrial se desarrolle entre países análogos en sus relaciones capital-trabajo, de tal forma que las industrias con alto nivel de comercio intrain-dustrial entre los países, tienden a ser de bienes manufacturados sofisticados como la industria química y equipos de generación de energía (Krugman y Obstfeld, 2006, p. 137)12.

    Description: El presente escrito nace de las reflexiones de dos trabajos de investigación que giran alrededor de los temas de escritura y lectura en los universitarios y de la concepción de formación docente, vinculada a la idea de ensoñación desde Bachelard; a partir de ahí, se desarrolla una reflexión alrededor de la misma temática pero en la etapa inicial donde se tejen las estructuras fundamentales de los procesos de constitución del sujeto. En ambos trabajos el lenguaje y la didáctica hacen parte primordial del sustento de los mismos. En esas relaciones simbióticas entre sujeto, aprendizaje, didáctica y ensoñación se presenta el tema de la escritura en la búsqueda de generar una idea diferente a asumirla como proceso netamente instrumental, sino unirlo a formas diferentes de su abordaje; siendo la niñez una época de mayor apertura al aprendizaje, concebir la escritura desde estos lugares puede hacer la diferencia de mejorar los procesos escriturales en los años posteriores.

    Description: Quizás después de la salud y la economía, el tercer gran damnificado con la crisis planetaria es el mundo del trabajo, los mercados laborales advierten cambios sensibles: competencia global, aumento del desempleo en los mercados formales, mayor vulnerabilidad de los mercados informales, profundidad de la precariedad, generalización de la incertidumbre laboral para todos. La mayor consecuencia de esta crisis y gran depresión planetaria de la que quizás nos demoremos toda esta década siguiente en recuperarnos, como fue el caso de la gran depresión de 1929, es que deberemos soportar grandes pérdidas, lo que no deja de enfrentarnos a un proceso de trauma y duelo por ello. Se perderán empleos, 195 millones, en el mundo y 14 millones en América Latina dice la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT); se perderá capacidad adquisitiva derivada de una constricción del salario, en algunos sectores perderán hasta el 50 % de su ingreso mensual (turismo, entretenimiento, transporte, etc.). Se perderá también riqueza sobre todo en los que estaban en condición de independencia laboral, autónomos, y emprendedores, quienes no solo han perdido sus empleos, sino sus empresas, sus emprendimientos; perderán lo que habían ganado y hasta los ahorros de toda su vida, perderán su patrimonio. Los empleados, en su gran mayoría, perderán no solo el empleo y el valor de su salario, también perderán todos aquellos beneficios adicionales: primas legales y extralegales, apoyos económicos para educación y bienestar, bonos complementarios de compensación, etc. Estas pérdidas han quedado profundizadas de manera acelerada, en cuestión de semanas; los efectos y capacidad de recuperación se calculan en no pocos años.

    Description: El trasplante de órganos es una alternativa terapéutica para muchos pacientes que padecen enfermedades que afectan gravemente el funcionamiento de un órgano vital, esta intervención les ofrece no solo una mejor calidad de vida, sino un incremento en la expectativa de vida. En este sentido, la medicina ha realizado importantes avances en la investigación de nuevas técnicas para mejorar la supervivencia de los pacientes trasplantados, así como en el desarrollo de fármacos que disminuyan el rechazo del órgano, sin embargo, desde la psicología ha sido un tema poco explorado. Cuando una persona es diagnosticada con una enfermedad crónica, irreversible y terminal se genera en su vida una serie de profundos cambios con implicaciones en todas las esferas no solo a nivel personal, sino familiar, laboral y social. Sumado a dicho diagnóstico, se agrega la espera, en aquellos pacientes que deben someterse a un trasplante hasta que aparezca un donante, lo cual representa una carga emocional adicional que se puede dar entre la incertidumbre y el procedimiento (Leite Araujo Broges et al., 2012).

    Description: La resistencia microbiana ha sido considerada como una amenaza para la salud pública a nivel mundial. Entidades como la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y el Centro para el Control y Prevención de las Enfermedades de los Estados Unidos (CDC por sus siglas en inglés: Centers for Desease Control and prevention) establecieron la lucha contra la resistencia antimicrobiana como una de sus prioridades (CDC, 2020). La selección de microorganismos resistentes a los antimicrobianos es cada día más común debido, entre otros, al uso de antibióticos de mayor espectro y hospitalizaciones prolongadas que generan mayores tasas de morbi-mortalidad.     Description: Este artículo pretende generar algunas reflexiones acerca de lo que en-tendemos por etnoliteratura en la actualidad. El avance de las teorías de las Humanidades y de los estudios culturales ha permitido que este campo se enriquezca a partir del diálogo interdisciplinar permitiendo el encuentro con la Alteridad. La etnoliteratura debe ser comprendida como una disciplina que nos lleva a aproximarnos al conocimiento ancestral que subyace desde lo simbólico y lo imaginario de las culturas en su devenir histórico. Esto permitirá que la generación de conocimiento artístico, genere a su vez formas estéticas y literarias capaces de revitalizar la realidad histórico cultural de los pueblos en resistencia desde hace seis siglos.

    Description: En la actualidad existe una gran preocupación por la emergencia, selección y diseminación de bacterias resistentes a beta-lactámicos. Es por ello que la Organización Mundial de la Salud ha publicado una lista de patógenos prioritarios resistentes a los antibióticos, en la que se incluyen las bacterias que forman parte de los estudios que se han reportado en los diferentes capítulos de este libro. Esta lista se ha elaborado para tratar de guiar y promover la investigación de esta problemática y promover la búsqueda mancomunada de alternativas que permitan controlar y combatir el creciente problema mundial de la resistencia a los antimicrobianos. Es por ello que se espera que este libro sea un aporte para la solución de la problemática que aquí se describe.

    Description: El propósito central de este artículo es reflexionar y sustentar las razones pedagógicas por las cuales se debe enseñar inglés a los niños desde su primera infancia, con la ayuda del aprendizaje activo y métodos y enfoques relacionados. En Colombia, la enseñanza del inglés se estableció en todos los niveles escolares desde el año 2004, como parte del proyecto que nació con el nombre de Colombia Bilingüe, liderado por el Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN, 2005). El enfoque de enseñanza de este importante idioma se ha caracterizado principalmente por el uso de métodos gramaticales con repetición mecánica de palabras y estructuras de la lengua, que conllevan, en la mayoría de los casos, a desmotivación en el niño lo cual le hace perder interés por el aprendizaje del inglés. En este artículo se referencian trabajos de investigación que han analizado el aprendizaje activo en la enseñanza del inglés en niños y niñas de la primera infancia y de Educación Básica. Estos han arrojado análisis favorables hacia el aprendizaje de este idioma desde temprana edad, debido a factores tan importantes como la edad, la creatividad, la disposición, la facilidad de socializar, y la gran plasticidad cognitiva y afectiva de los estudiantes en sus primeros años.

    Description: The central purpose of this article is to reflect and validate the ped-agogic reasons for which English should be taught from early age through the help of active learning and related methods and ap-proaches. In Colombia, the teaching of English was established in all the scholar levels from the year 2004, as part of the project that was originally called “Colombia Bilingüe” led by the National Ministry of Educa-tion (MEN, 2005). The main teaching approach of this important language has been mainly characterized by the use of structural and grammatical methods with mechanic repetition of words and structures, which leads, most of the cases, to discourage in the child that makes them feel uninterested for the learning of English. Important research papers have been related in this article that have analyzed the active learning in the teaching of English in children in their first infancy and basic education. These have shown positive results to the learning of this language in the early childhood, due to factors as important as it is age, creativity, disposition, the facility for socializing, and the huge cognitive and affective plasticity of stu-dents in their first years.
