    Description: José C. Martín de la Cruz is a pioneer scholar whose contributions both to Prehistory and the diffusion of cultural heritage have been acknowledged at an international level. The present volume pays homage to his professional career, by inviting more than 40 international scholars who tackle the study of Prehistory and the dissemination of heritage from several thematic and temporal perspectives. It is thus a multidisciplinary volume in which scholars from different fields investigate Prehistory from its origins to the period immediately before Greek and Phoenician colonization; at the same time, they explore the different ways in which Prehistoric heritage is transmitted. The volume is composed of four different but related parts, organized chronologically and starting with the most recent Prehistory. The first part deals with the intercultural connections which took place during the Bronze Age in the Mediterranean area. The second part goes back in time and investigates the first settlements and early food producing societies. The third examines our remote past and its natural environment. Finally, the closing part includes a set of multidisciplinary chapters which study prehistory from several different scientific fields. All in all, this volume becomes a scientific meeting point where senior professors and junior scholars get together to offer their scientific findings, at the same time as they pay homage to Professor Martín de la Cruz.

    Description: From its source in Sierra de Cazorla to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, the Guadalquivir River has been a feature of the identities of the communities settled around it throughout history. The resources provided by the river itself, its tributaries and its vast valley have contributed to the survival, well-being and development of different cultures. As a result of this relationship between people and terrain, various cultural landscapes have been created. However, the political, economic and health situation of recent years has threatened the sustainability of some of them, as well as its heritage, and in many cases they are condemned to abandonment and oblivion. The present monograph arose to reflect on this complex situation from multiple perspectives, including archaeology, the natural environment, didactics, new technologies and tourism. It is the result of collaboration by leading professionals and researchers from diverse academic fields. Together they aim to analyse various realities; to identify the heritage needs we face today; and to suggest proposals to (re)activate the cultural industries of the Guadalquivir Valley.

    Description: El segundo volumen de la serie “Rescate arqueológico en la cuenca del Río Chixoy”, publicado en 1980 en el marco del proyecto RCP 500 del Centro Nacional de Investigación Científica de Francia, presenta la descripción del sitio más importantede esta zona : Cauinal (Capítulo 1), y de las excavaciones que fueron practicadas en el área, de noviembre de 1978 a mayo de 1979 (Capítulo 2). El Capítulo 3 es una amplia descripción de las estructuras encontradas en el grupo ceremonial A, que comprende los edificios más importantes de Cauinal ; mientras que el capítulo 4, describe el grupo residencial A. El capítulo 5, muestra las excavaciones del grupo B y de una parte del grupo C de Cauinal. Los grupos ceremoniales C-Sur y C-Norte son tratados en el Capítulo 6. Por último, los sitios secundarios del gran Cauinal son descritos en el Capítulo 7.

    Reconocimiento arqueológico en el sureste del estado de Campeche, México (2022)

    Description: Knjiga opisuje rezultate sedme sezone arheološkega rekognosciranja na jugovzhodu mehiške zvezne države Campeche. Terenski pregledi so bili opravljeni leta 2007 v južnem delu neposeljene Calakmulske biosfere. Površinska keramika in posebnosti arhitekture potrjujejo poselitev od srednje predklasične do zaključne klasične dobe, ugotovljeno že med predhodnimi terenskimi raziskavami, razkrivajo pa tudi povezave s sosednjimi območji. Registrirana najdišča so ostanki naselij, ki ustrezajo različnim hierarhičnim razredom. O družbenopolitičnem pomenu nekaterih urbanih središč pričajo monumentalne ceremonialne in upravne stavbe, pa tudi stele in drugi kamniti spomeniki. Podatki, doslej zbrani na jugovzhodu Campecheja, razkrivajo gostoto in raznovrstnost arheoloških ostankov in pomembno prispevajo k razumevanju družbene organizacije, politične geografije in splošnega kulturnega razvoja Majev v osrednjih nižavjih.

    Significado astronómico de los grupos E en la arquitectura maya (2022)

    Description: V arhitekturi Majev izstopajo arhitektonski kompleksi z značilno konfiguracijo, imenovani po Skupini E na arheološkem najdišču Uaxactún v Gvatemali. Razširjeno mnenje je, da so imeli ti kompleksi posebno pomembno vlogo v astronomskih opazovanjih, nekateri raziskovalci pa jim tak pomen odrekajo in menijo, da gre predvsem za obredne stavbe, povezane s kozmološkimi pojmovanji. Kvantitativne analize podatkov o poravnavah, izmerjenih na vrsti najdišč, in značilnosti arheoloških kontekstov so pokazale, da so bile skupine E astronomsko funkcionalne, vendar niso imele nobene specifične vloge v astronomskih opazovanjih. Z navajanjem ustreznih dejstev tudi dokazujem, da so bile astronomske usmeritve, prvotno vgrajene v skupine E – ki predstavljajo najzgodnejšo standardizirano obliko monumentalne arhitekture Majev in katerih pojav v praktično vseh zgodnjih mestih v osrednjem delu polotoka Jukatana priča o njihovem družbenopolitičnem pomenu – kasneje prenesene na stavbe drugih tipov. Zato nam prav pomen astronomsko in kozmološko signifikantnih smeri, ki so bile najprej vključene v skupine E, omogoča razumevanje nekaterih pomembnih vidikov arhitekture in urbanizma Majev.

    Description: En tierras de Hércules explores the history and archaeological heritage of the southwest coast of the Isla Gaditana – the territory where the Temple of Hercules and the Idol of Cádiz are said to have stood for more than twelve centuries: Torregorda, Camposoto and Sancti Petri.The text examines the occupation sequence of Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze-Age and historic societies in the area. In addition, it analyses the shaping of the landscape by geological, sedimentary and human action since the Phoenician settlement. The historical region of the Strait of Gibraltar, considered the end of the ‘known world’ until the modern age, is studied as an intercontinental and cultural bridge.The core of the work is an examination of 32 groups of remains, classified according to communicational, strategic and environmental factors. This includes those relating to the underwater site of the Sancti Petri Castle, which are usually associated with the Temple of Hercules. Using manuscripts from local archives, the book documents elements such as the emergence of the underwater remains of the Temple of Hercules or the construction of canals and defensive architecture. And by means of prehistoric rock art, it examines the origins of sailing in the vicinity of Gibraltar. A final chapter recommends the investigation of the millenary intersection between the Rio Arillo channel and the Calzada de La Alcantarilla road.

    Description: En su obra Les Chasseurs-cueilleurs ou l’origine des inégalrtés (1982), Alain Testart insiste en el papel que la práctica del almacenamiento pudo haber cobrado en el origen de las desigualdades en el seno de los grupos humanos, en particular entre las bandas de cazadores recolectores y, especialmente, aquellas más o menos sedentarizadas. En un artículo famoso, Kent V. Flannery (1973), por su parte, afirmaba que la aparición del modo de vida sedentario más había tenido que ver con la invención de las fosas de almacenaje que con la de la agricultura. Eso ejemplifica el carácter central que tuvo el acto de almacenar en diferentes contextos de la historia humana universal. No cabe duda de que, en la Mesoamérica prehispánica también, el almacenaje desempeñó un papel importante. Sin embargo, la arqueología y la etnohistoria no han prestado mucha atención al tema y a los vestigios -de hecho a menudo efímeros- que pueden hablar de este aspecto esencial de la vida económica y social. Al revisar datos procedentes de diferentes partes del Norte y Centro del México antiguo -desde Chihuahua hasta Morelos y Puebla, pasando por Michoacán y la Cuenca de México-, este volumen pretende empezar a llenar un vacío. Por otra parte, más allá de la simple recopilación de informaciones factuales, sus páginas introducen a discusiones fundamentales sobre las múltiples cuestiones que el estudio del almacenamiento en sociedades del pasado lleva a abordar: sus aspectos tecnológicos, pero también económicos, sociales y políticos, en otras palabras su dimensión antropológica.

    Description: This monograph presents the results of a systematic study of orientations in prehispanic architecture of two sub-areas of Mesoamerica. The alignment data for a number of civic and ceremonial buildings were collected with field measurements at 42 archaeological sites in the cultural regions of Oaxaca and the Gulf of Mexico.
    Description: V knjigi so predstavljeni rezultati raziskave astronomskega pomena orientacij v predšpanski arhitekturi dveh podobmočij Mezoamerike. Analize terensko pridobljenih podatkov so pokazale, da so bile pomembne stavbe usmerjene povečini proti Sončevim vzhajališčem in zahajališčem na določene datume, nekatere pa verjetno proti skrajnim Luninim točkam na horizontu. Na osnovi kontekstualnih podatkov je mogoče sklepati, da so opazovalni koledarji, katerih uporabo so omogočale solarne orientacije, olajševali primerno načrtovanje poljedelskih dejavnosti in povezanih obredov. Usmeritve v več primerih ustrezajo tudi izstopajočim hribom na horizontu, kar pomeni, da so bila mesta za gradnjo pomembnih stavb izbrana na osnovi tako astronomskih kot topografskih kriterijev. Rezultati študije razkrivajo koncepte, ki so narekovali arhitekturno in urbano načrtovanje na območjih raziskave in ki odsevajo vidike mezoameriškega pogleda na svet, obenem pa osvetljujejo splošne tendence v razvoju praks orientiranja ter skupne in razhajajoče se razvojne poti v posameznih regijah, s čimer prispevajo tudi k razumevanju procesov kulturne interakcije v zgodovini Mezoamerike.

    Description: This monograph presents the results of a study of orientations in prehispanic architecture of western and northern Mesoamerica. Analyzing the alignment data collected with field measurements for a number of civic and ceremonial buildings at 21 archaeological sites, we have been able to conclude that they were largely oriented on astronomical grounds. Since the study area is extensive and culturally diverse, while the data sample is relatively small, the orientations that have been analyzed exhibit considerable variability.
    Description: Knjiga predstavlja rezultate raziskave orientacij v predšpanski arhitekturi zahodne in severne Mezoamerike. Analize podatkov so pokazale, da so bile pomembne stavbe povečini usmerjene na osnovi astronomskih referenc. Orientacije se večinoma nanašajo na Sončeva vzhajališča in zahajališča na določene datume, nekatere pa morda na skrajne položaje Lune ali Venere na horizontu. V razporeditvi intervalov med datumi, ki jih registrirajo solarne orientacije, so opazne koncentracije okoli nekaterih mnogokratnikov 13 in 20 dni. Distribucija datumov v letu, podobnosti z vzorci orientacij v drugih predelih Mezoamerike in kontekstualni podatki, vključno z etnografskim gradivom, kažejo, da so solarne orientacije omogočale uporabo opazovalnih koledarjev, ki so olajševali načrtovanje poljedelskih dejavnosti in s temi povezanih obredov. Dejstvo, da so nekatere stavbe usmerjene proti Sončevim položajem na datume, ki jih zaznamuje veliko število orientacij drugod po Mezoameriki, je posebno zanimivo, saj predstavlja najbolj prepričljiv dokaz, da so tudi na zahodu in severu prevladovala ista načela usmerjanja, obenem pa prispeva k razumevanju kulturnih povezav med posameznimi regijami.

    Description: El cerro de Alarcos (Ciudad Real): Formación y desarrollo de un oppidum ibérico presents the results of archaeological work which has been carried out since 1997 in so-called Sector III of the Alarcos site, located on a hill next to the Guadiana river, a few kilometres from Ciudad Real. These archaeological campaigns have made it possible to obtain essential information to understand the communities that, from the end of the Bronze Age to the end of the Iron Age, inhabited this large town and its surrounding area. An interesting set of structures and other evidence of material culture have been recovered, which allow us to characterize the daily activities of people between the 10th-11th century BC and, in addition, they enable us to understand the paleoenvironment of this territory and the nature of the economy and the food transformation activities of these protohistoric populations. The use of this territory has been determined over the centuries, being originally a residential area which later, in Iberian times, assumed economic functionality, as it was intended for grain storage, grinding and cooking food. The documentation of a wide and varied repertoire of ceramic materials and an interesting set of foreign ceramics corroborates the dynamism this settlement achieved, during both the Pre-Iberian period and the full Iberian period."

    Aspectos astronómicos de la arquitectura maya en la costa nororiental de la península de Yucatán (2022)

    Description: An archaeoastronomical study recently accomplished in the Maya area revealed that the architecture on the northeast coast of the Yucatán peninsula is characterized by some peculiar orientation trends, which we have not been able to explain in a satisfactory manner. In order to acquire additional information, in November 2015 we measured the orientations of 34 structures at 21 archaeological sites. The book presents the results of this work, as well as some analyses based on all the available data from the northeast coast. Their distribution shows that the percentage of orientations related to the Sun is notably lower than in other parts of the Maya Lowlands.
    Description: Arheoastronomska raziskava, ki smo jo nedavno opravili na območju kulture Majev, je v razporeditvi orientacij v arhitekturi severovzhodne obale polotoka Jukatana razkrila nekatere posebnosti, ki jih ni bilo mogoče zadovoljivo pojasniti. Da bi pridobili dodatne informacije, smo novembra leta 2015 izmerili usmeritve 34 stavb na 21 arheoloških najdiščih. Knjiga predstavlja rezultate tega dela in nekatere analize, ki temeljijo na vseh razpoložljivih podatkih za severovzhodno obalo. Najbolj izstopajo orientacije proti velikim Luninim ekstremom, gotovo zaradi pomena, ki ga je imel na tem območju kult boginje Ixchel, povezane z Luno. Drugo najbolj izstopajočo skupino predstavljajo solsticijske orientacije, ki so pogosto povezane z lunarnimi, kar kaže na opazovanje ekstremov polne Lune. Tretjo večjo skupino orientacij je mogoče povezati z nekaterimi zvezdami, toda hipotezo bo treba še preveriti. Usmeritve mnogih obalnih stavb se približno skladajo s potekom morskega obrežja, ker pa obenem pripadajo astronomsko signifikantnim skupinam, argumentiramo, da so bile strukture na obali pogosto zgrajene na izbranih mestih, ki so ustrezala tako astronomskim kot topografskim kriterijem.

    Exploraciones arqueológicas en Chactún, Campeche, México (2022)

    Description: Arheološko najdišče Chactún, ki leži v vzhodnem delu mehiške zvezne države Campeche, smo odkrili leta 2013 v južnem delu obsežnega arheološko neraziskanega ozemlja, ki se razteza med regijama Río Bec in Chenes. Urbano jedro nekdanjega mesta sestavljajo tri koncentracije monumentalne arhitekture, med številnimi kamnitimi spomeniki pa je več takih, na katerih so ohranjeni reliefi. Sodeč po obsegu in velikosti stavb, je Chactún eno največjih majevskih mestnih središč, doslej znanih v osrednjem nižavju polotoka Jukatana. Medtem ko keramika razodeva poselitev od predklasične dobe naprej, stele s hieroglifskimi besedili in datumi kažejo, da je mesto doseglo svoj vzpon v pozni klasični dobi, ko je dobilo pomembno vlogo v regionalni politični hierarhiji. Glede na to, da najdišče leži nedaleč od osrednjega dela območja Río Bec, je presenetljivo, da njegove značilnosti kažejo na veliko tesnejše povezave s tradicijo Petén. Posebnost Chactúna so kamniti spomeniki z reliefi, modeliranimi v štuku, sekundarne lege mnogih stel in oltarjev pa razodevajo, da je bilo naselje prizorišče dejavnosti tudi še v stoletjih po največjem razcvetu.

    Description: Portus, investigaciones geoarqueológicas en el muelle este-oeste collects the scientific results of the geoarchaeological project on the east-west pier of Portus (Rome) developed within the framework of the Archaeological Projects Abroad program of the Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte of the Kingdom of Spain, and also under a collaboration agreement between the University of Huelva and the Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica. Since 2017, without interruption until the present, various excavation and study campaigns have focused their efforts on the pier via an inter- and multidisciplinary methodology involving archaeologists, geologists, palaeobotanists and palaeontologists. Thus, excavation activities, geophysical prospecting, petrographic, archaeometric studies and architectural analysis have been developed, always with the application of new photogrammetric techniques and laser scanning, which have allowed us to obtain a significant volume of data. Its analysis and interpretation now gives the most extensive and up-to-date picture of one of the most interesting and extensive docks in Portus, with new contributions related to its chronology, with a building phase from the fourth century AD; its construction system, whose foundations have been determined; the surrounding paleoenvironment, with new data related to the silting process of the Claudio inlet; as well as the changes that occured in the transition to the Early Middle Ages, among others.

    Description: Este es el primer volumen de la serie “Rescate arqueológico en la cuenca del Río Chixoy”, publicado en 1979 en el marco del proyecto RCP 500 del Centro Nacional de Investigación Científica de Francia. El presente cuadernoes un informe preliminar sobre el sitio de Cauinal, previo a su inundación a causa de la construcción de la presa hidroeléctrica de Pueblo Viejo-Quixal. El capítulo 1 trata sobre el reconocimiento del área llevado a cabo de enero a abril de 1979 por un equipo liderado por Jean-Pierre Courau. Los capítulos 2, 3 y 4 describen los resultados de las primeras excavaciones de los sitios arqueológicos mayores que se encuentran en Pueblo Viejo-Chixoy, Los Encuentros y Cauinal respectivamente.
