    Description: The study scrutinizes the effects of language awareness on teachers’ conceptualization of language variation. Teacher language awareness has been discussed mostly for the case of English and with regard to grammar, and is defined as being determined by knowledge and reflexion (Andrews 2008, Svalberg 2012). This study aims at examining the reach of the concept for other languages, here Dutch, and for other terrains, in this case, language variation, thus stretching the application also into the realm of language ideology. According to Kroskrity (2006, 2016), language ideologies are (1) not knowledge but ‘‘notions’, ‘beliefs’ or ‘ideas’, which (2) are about language, the role(s) of language and its nature, and which (3) are constructed by individuals and groups in interaction with each other to (4) rationalize and justify social relations. In this linguistic-ethnographic study, a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with teachers of Dutch at eight European universities shows that knowledge and reflection play a considerable role for how teachers conceptualize language variation in class. Overall, four different types of teacher language awareness came to the fore, based on different interplays of both knowledge and reflection: standard language ideology alive, strong focus on prescription, doubting and linguistic insecurity and dynamic equilibrium. The overall results show the importance of teacher language awareness in language classes and help to boil down the vague notion of language awareness on language variation to two major defining factors, namely knowledge and reflection. Further, the study shows that language classrooms may be seen as ‘ideological sites’ (Silverstein (1979, 1998)), in which language ideology may be either reproduced or deconstructed, depending on the language awareness of the teacher. The consequences of the study for language teacher education are a plea for an informed, reflected, differentiated and integrative treatment of language variation in language class.
    Description: Taalvariatie stelt docenten voor een bijzondere uitdaging: de vraag naar wat (nog net) kan en naar wat fout is. Die vraag is vaak niet zo makkelijk te beantwoorden. Hoe taaldocenten omgaan met taalvariatie, staat in deze sociolinguïstische studie centraal. Met een etnografische methode slaagt Truus De Wilde erin te achterhalen hoe docenten reageren op taalvariatie en analyseert ze achterliggende motieven. Taalideologieën over wat een standaardtaal is en zou moeten zijn, liggen aan de basis van deze analyse. Op basis van deze ideologieën worden vier archetypes geconstrueerd. De vele citaten uit interviews illustreren de archetypes en wijzen op de centrale rol van taalbewustzijn.

    Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy. Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena. It will be especially relevant for students in performing, composing and scientific music education, as well as theology and religious studies. The anthology has been edited by Henrik Holm (associate professor in education at Oslo Metropolitan University and professor in philosophy at Rudolf Steiner University College) and Øivind Varkøy (professor in music education and music sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Music and professor II in music at Oslo Metropolitan University).

    Description: During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre.
    Description: Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van “fake news” avant la lettre.

    Description: "The development and spread of self-help groups in Norway has been unlike that in other western countries. Public authorities, in collaboration with private sector volunteer resources, have created a national hybrid organization, Self-Help Norway (Selvhjelp Norge), to promote ‘self-help’ options. The introduction of combined groups, in which participants come together with a range of different problems or diagnoses, is also unusual. This book takes a closer look at the phenomenon of self-help in light of theories relating to group therapy, social movements, organizational sociology and welfare-state development. The individual chapters are based on the authors’ own research on self-help groups and the way they are organized in Norway. Our underlying point of departure is that self-help is in fact something quite different from the common public perception of a self-absorbed and ‘narcissistic’ activity that occurs at the expense of the community. Self-help groups have, rightly so, a focus on individual change and have recently gained a stronger psychological orientation. There is however a need for describing and analyzing the self-help group’s collective dimension, the reciprocal form of self-help that takes place in the context of the group. We analyze as well the growth of what we have called ‘the new self-help movement’ in the border zone between public and private sector and show how self-help has been established in various local societies as a form of social entrepreneurship. The movement’s breakthrough with the public sector is internationally unique, but it can also have come at a cost in the form of less legitimacy and relevance for the other self-help organizations. We pose questions about where these developments will lead."
    Description: "Utviklingen og utbredelsen av selvhjelpsgrupper i Norge skiller seg fra andre vestlige land. Myndighetene har sammen med frivillige krefter i sivilsamfunnet dannet en landsomfattende hybrid organisasjon (Selvhjelp Norge) for å fremme «selvhjelpssaken». Det er også spesielt at man har introdusert en arbeidsform med sammensatte grupper der deltakere kommer sammen på tvers av problemtyper eller diagnoser. Denne boken ser nærmere på fenomenet selvhjelp i lys av teorier om gruppeterapi, sosiale bevegelser, organisasjonssosiologi og velferdsstatsutvikling. De ulike kapitlene er basert på forfatternes egen forskning på selvhjelpsgrupper og måten de er organisert på i norsk sammenheng. Vårt utgangspunkt er at selvhjelpsgrupper er noe annet enn hva «selvhjelp» ofte fremstilles som i offentlige debatt, som en selvopptatt og «narsissistisk» aktivitet som skjer på bekostning av fellesskapet. Selvhjelpsgruppene har riktignok et fokus på individuell endring og har i den senere tid fått en sterkere psykologisk orientering. Det er imidlertid et behov for å beskrive og analysere selvhjelpgruppens kollektive dimensjon, den gjensidige formen for selvhjelp som skjer i gruppekonteksten. Vi analyserer også det vi har kalt «den nye selvhjelpsbevegelsens» fremvekst i et grenseland mellom stat og sivilsamfunn og viser hvordan selvhjelpsarbeid har blitt etablert i ulike lokalsamfunn som en form for sosialt entreprenørskap. Bevegelsens gjennomslag hos staten er internasjonalt unikt, men det kan også ha hatt en kostnadsside i form av mindre legitimitet og relevans hos de andre selvhjelpsorganisasjonene. Vi stiller spørsmål om hvor utviklingen går videre."

    Description: Een progressief voorstel voor het landbouwbeleid van morgen De vurige debatten rond de stikstofproblematiek, de droogte, het biodiversiteitsverlies, de seizoensarbeid en de overmatige vleesproductie en -consumptie hebben landbouw weer helemaal op de maatschappelijke en politieke agenda gezet. De vraag dringt zich stilaan op of we in Vlaanderen en Europa effectief nog op een duurzame en economisch rendabele manier aan landbouw kunnen doen en hoe die landbouw dan vorm moet krijgen. Het huidige debat is echter sterk polariserend: landbouw versus ecologie, vermarkting versus subsistentie, schaalvergroting versus familiebedrijven, comparatieve voordelen en specialisatie versus diversiteit, enzovoort. Polariserende discussies brengen helaas zelden antwoorden. Dit boek wil daarom de klassieke tegenstellingen doorbreken. Verschillende experts laten de breuklijn tussen ecologie en landbouw achter zich en formuleren aanbevelingen voor een progressief landbouwbeleid. Hoewel elk individueel hoofdstuk oplossingen biedt voor een deelaspect van landbouw, ligt de kracht van dit boek net in de oproep om ad-hocmaatregelen achterwege te laten en te werken aan een coherent landbouwplan. De complexiteit van ons huidig landbouwbeleid heeft nood aan een coherent landbouwplan. Dit boek neemt het initiatief om hiertoe een progressief voorstel te lanceren.     Description: Erling Kristvik (1882-1969) was a central figure in the Norwegian educational system in the 20th century. He was known for being the principle of Volda University College from 1930, as well as a writer of textbooks for teacher education. This book centers around Kristviks authorship, focusing on a manuscript many thought to be lost: Folkelære. Pedagogisk sosiologi, written in the 1940s and the key point of analysis in this book, was never published.
    Description: "Erling Kristvik (1882–1969) var en av Norges mest sentrale «skolemenn» på 1900-tallet. Han var særlig kjent som rektor ved Volda lærarskule fra 1930, en stilling han hadde fram til julaften 1941 da NS-myndighetene stengte skolen. Som lærebokforfatter kom han til å prege en hel generasjon lærere, og lærebøkene hans var lenge det dominerende pensum ved nesten alle landets lærerskoler. Han var en ivrig debattant, taler og foredragsholder, og skreiv en lang rekke pedagogiske og sosiologiske artikler. Denne boka drøfter sentrale sider ved Kristviks forfatterskap. En sentral tekst her er et manus som lenge har vært antatt tapt, men som nå er gjenfunnet: Folkelære. Pedagogisk sosiologi. Dette skulle utgjøre sluttsteinen i Kristviks pedagogiske forfatterskap, men det blei aldri utgitt. Kristviks arbeid med dette manuset gikk parallelt med at han nærmest lå i brevkrig med NS-myndighetene. Volda lærarskule blei sett som et «motstandsreir», og denne motstanden mot nazifisering førte til at skolen blei stengt, og Kristvik sjøl arrestert. Folkelære blir lest i lys av den argumentasjonen han samtidig førte for å hindre stenging. Enkelte formuleringer her skapte problem for han etter krigen. Men hans «forklaring» fikk brei støtte og blei akseptert av departementet."
