    Description: Dagens læreplaner legger stor vekt på det å utforske tekster, steder, faglige temaer og ulike typer miljø og materiale, og anerkjenner utforskningens potensial i kunnskapstilegnelse. For å være en dyktig lærer i dagens og fremtidens skole, er det dermed viktig å oppøve gode strategier og ha hensiktsmessige metodiske redskaper for å drive utforskende undervisning.     Description: Nyskaping er eit omgrep vi møter i mange samanhengar, og det er gjerne tett kopla til omgrepet innovasjon. Oftast er nyskaping omtalt i positive lada ordelag og som noko vi ønskjer å få til meir av. Men kva inneber nyskaping? Antologien løfter opp nokre spørsmål som er med å tydeleggjere kva nyskaping er. Kva skil nyskaping frå innovasjon? Kva er tilsikta og utilsikta konsekvensar av nyskapingsprosessar? Og kva skal til for å lukkast?. Krav til nyskaping kjem også til UH-sektoren, og dei ulike bidraga i antologien drøftar kva rolle UH-sektoren kan ha i nyskapinga. Nokre av kapitla tar fatt på denne debatten på eit prinsipielt nivå, gjennom å diskutere det opp mot UH-sektoren si rolle og mandatet til institusjonar innan høgare utdanning og forsking. Andre kapittel, med empiri i all hovudsak forankra i «fjordregionen», gjev viktige praktiske døme på korleis slike nyskapingsprosessar utfoldar seg i praksis. Fleire av kapitla diskuterer i større grad nyskapingar – altså produktet snarare enn prosessen. Diskusjonane frå kapitla i denne antologien syner at omgrepet nyskaping er mangfaldig. Eit viktig funn er at nyskapingsomgrepet ser ut til å representere noko anna og lettare handgripeleg for mange av aktørane enn det meir etablerte innovasjonsomgrepet. Det mogleggjer nye former for samhandling og innsikt som også er relevant langt utover regionen døma tek utgangspunkt i.

    Description: In 2020, Norway’s national curriculum for primary and secondary school eduction, known as Kunnskapsløftet, came into effect. The plan is marked by increased emphasis on education for sustainability, and a notable example of this is the inclusion of sustainable development as an interdisciplinary topic in most subjects in primary and secondary school. As a result, the focus on sustainabilty has also increased in teacher eduction programs, for preschool as well as primary and secondary school teachers. Furthermore, a number of research networks have been established to explore sustainability in the context of education, and new research and textbooks are being published on this topic. This anthology presents new research on how the subject of sustainability is being handled in schools and preschools today, to all those interested in the topic. Education for Sustainability.     Description: Hvordan kan lærerutdanningen gi kommende lærere kompetanse i å arbeide med globale og flerkulturelle spørsmål, og hvordan kan praksis eller lengre utenlandsopphold fremme studentenes interkulturelle kompetanse og globale bevissthet? Denne antologien belyser disse spørsmålene fra ulike vinkler og ulike fagtradisjoner. Internasjonalisering i lærerutdanningen dreier seg gjerne om internasjonal praksis, og mange lærerutdanningsinstitusjoner har drevet med praksis i det globale sør i ulike varianter gjennom mange år. Bidragene i antologien er alle skrevet av fagansatte ved norske lærerutdanninger, som kommer fra ulike fagfelt som engelsk, norsk, pedagogikk, sosiologi, antropologi og samfunnsgeografi. Dette illustreres ved bruk av forskjellig teoretisk tilnærming, empirisk materiale og ulike analyseteknikker. Alle bidragene har kvalitative tilnærminger, hvor leseren møter både lærerstudentenes stemmer og stemmene til samarbeidspartnere i sør. Kapitlene belyser praksis og utenlandssemestre i Zambia, Namibia, Tanzania og Sør-Afrika. Ett kapittel dreieseg om praksis i en flyktningleir. Antologien reiser også kritiske spørsmål omkring internasjonalisering og hvordan det også innebærer en risiko for nykolonialisme, og at studentene kan se verden gjennom et «turistblikk». Det argumenteres for hvordan dette kan unngås gjennom grundig forberedelse, oppfølging og etterarbeid. Dette er den første antologien som omhandler forskning på praksis og lengre opphold i det globale sør, og den henvender seg til en bred målgruppe: fra politikere og byråkrater som legger til rette for studentmobilitet i høyere utdanning, til forskere, profesjonsutdannere og studenter. For profesjonsutdanninger som i dag har praksis i sør, vil bidragene kunne gi viktig innsikt i forberedelse før, oppfølging underveis og refleksjoner i etterkant av praksisoppholdet.     Description: In the spring of 2019, 3355 Dutch students in group 6 of primary education from 112 schools participated in eTIMSS-2019. TIMSS stands for Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and measures worldwide developments in knowledge and skills in science and in attitudes of students who have completed four or eight years of formal education. The 'e' of eTIMSS refers to the digital administration of the test. In the Netherlands, group 6 students took the 2019 TIMSS test on a tablet. The students have been tested in mathematics and science (biology, physics and chemistry and physical geography). The present report reports on the outcomes of TIMSS-2019 in the Netherlands. The remainder of this chapter describes the structure of TIMSS-2019.

TIMSS staat voor Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study en meet wereldwijd de ontwikkelingen in kennis en vaardigheden in de exacte vakken en in attituden van leerlingen die vier of acht jaar formeel onderwijs hebben genoten. De ‘e’ van eTIMSS verwijst naar de digitale afname van de toets. In Nederland hebben groep 6 leerlingen de TIMSS-toets van 2019 op een tablet gemaakt. De leerlingen zijn getoetst in rekenen-wiskunde en natuuronderwijs (biologie, natuur- en scheikunde en fysische aardrijkskunde). In het voorliggende rapport wordt verslag gedaan van de uitkomsten van TIMSS-2019 in Nederland. Het resterende deel van dit hoofdstuk beschrijft de opzet van TIMSS-2019.

    Description: The research reported in this publication concerns the second sub-study of the project Administrative Power and the Effect of Professionalisation Incentives in Secondary Education. This sub-study focuses on the various incentives that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and organisations affiliated with OCW (for instance NRO, the Inspectorate and DUO, VO-raad, the Education Council and collective agreements) give to various actor groups in education. The aim is to maintain and improve the professional competencies of those actor groups. Incentives' is another word for professionalisation policy instruments (PBIs) and these can be categorised as PBIs arising from legislation or regulations, PBIs of a financial nature and PBIs intended to entice professionalisation activities through communication. For each PBI aimed at secondary education, the actor(s) targeted and the nature of the incentive were identified. For comparison with secondary education, this has also been done for PBIs in PO and MBO. To gain more insight into the familiarity, use, effectiveness and possible side effects, experts were interviewed and asked to fill in a digital questionnaire. Finally, a focus group meeting was held to discuss our findings in more detail on the basis of various propositions.
    Description: Het onderzoek brengt de stand van zaken met betrekking tot bestuurlijk vermogen en professionalisering in het voortgezet onderwijs in kaart. We doen dat door verschillende opeenvolgende deelstudies. We gaan door secundaire analyses na in hoeverre besturen voor voortgezet onderwijs van elkaar verschillen in gerealiseerde onderwijskwaliteit. Door literatuurstudie en interviews met deskundigen schetsen we vervolgens welke professionaliseringprikkels in het voortgezet onderwijs voorkomen en waar ze toe leiden. De kern van ons onderzoek bestaat uit een combinatie van een surveyonderzoek met (verkennende en verdiepende) casestudies. We onderzoeken in hoeverre besturen beschikken over bestuurlijk vermogen, hoe ze reageren op externe professionaliseringsprikkels en hoe ze interne professionalisering vormgeven. We analyseren de relaties tussen bestuurlijk vermogen, professionalisering en onderwijskwaliteit en gaan de invloed na van bestuurlijke kenmerken. Door expertmeetings met vertegenwoordigers van beleid, praktijk en wetenschap komen we uiteindelijk tot breed gedragen aanbevelingen voor het verbeteren van het voortgezet onderwijs.

    Description: This report examines how education can contribute to the prevention of radicalization and polarization of young people. The starting point was to link up with identity development in adolescence and developing social competences in education. By better to match the identity needs of young people, possible radical thoughts are steered towards positive political or social involvement. This approach has been underexposed to date in research and also insufficiently present in existing policy strategies for education
    Description: In dit rapport is nagegaan hoe het onderwijs kan bijdragen aan het voorkomen van radicalisering en polarisatie van jongeren. Het uitgangspunt was om daarbij aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsontwikkeling in de adolescentie en het ontwikkelen van sociale competenties binnen het onderwijs. Door beter aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsbehoeften van jongeren kunnen eventuele radicale gedachten worden bijgestuurd naar positieve politieke of maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Deze benadering is tot op heden onderbelicht gebleven in onderzoek en ook onvoldoende aanwezig in bestaande beleidsstrategieën voor het onderwijs

    Description: Jan Walravens (1920-1965) played a central role in Flemish literature as he introduced and facilitated literary experiments after the second world war. He was a leading essayist and literary critic, who wrote thousands of reviews showing the younger generation the way to French existentialism and to the international avant-garde. In addition to novels and shorter fiction, he published in-depth philosophical essays on Kierkegaard, Sade and Sartre. His international network of artistic relations turned him into a central figure in the Flemish literary world, a position he held until his untimely death at the age of forty-five. Jan Walravens and the Experiment presents ten essays that chart the various aspects of Walravens’ immense activity: his philosophical thinking on Sade, his relation with the visual arts, his position as an avant-gardist, his defense of poetry old and new, his view on the French nouveau roman, his novels, and his propagation of a new kind of literary diary. The authors have used the Walravens archive and unearthed some material that has never before been brought to the public’s attention, most notably the facsimile of a ‘cadavre exquis’ Walravens created with Albert Bontridder and Florent Welles.

    Description: In A monument to the country. Official statistics in Belgium, 1795-1870, Nele Bracke unravels why and how the Belgian state and its predecessors organized and developed an official statistical apparatus in order to collect numerical information. The study captures the underlying objectives and structures, as well as the methods to compile statistics. Nele Bracke investigates the meaning and significance of government statistics in the 19th-century State and society. In Belgium, early social scientists established an internationally renowned ‘statistical system’ designed to collect information about the country, the people and the society. This ‘statistical system’ was built around the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ (statistical committee) and the production of demographic, economic and agricultural censuses. In the first part of the book, the author analyzes the institutional history of the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ and its predecessors. In the second part of the book, she studies the censuses.

    Description: De som selv skal bli lærere og undervise andre, hvordan arbeider de med fagets tekster og uttrykksformer i vid forstand? Hvordan leser og skaper de tekster, og hvordan bidrar dette til å utruste dem til å bli gode lærere i fremtidens skole Utgangspunktet for denne boka er forskningsprosjektet DigiGLU som har undersøkt tekstpraksiser og medieringsformer i grunnskolelærerutdanninga (GLU) etter reformen i 2010. Spesielt har forskerne vært opptatt av hvilken rolle digitale medier og multimodale tekster spiller i lærerstudentenes arbeid. Digitale medier byr på nye muligheter for å kombinere skrift med bilder og lyd, for aktiv respons, interaktiv utprøving og sosial samhandling. Det har vært satset stort på digitalt utstyr i høyere utdanning gjennom en årrekke, men arbeidsformene har ikke forandret seg tilsvarende. I denne boka analyserer forfatterne konkrete arbeidskrav og trekker inn studentenes refleksjoner omkring hvordan tekster og medier fungerer i læringsprosesser i ulike fag. Bokas forfattere er alle ansatte ved Universitetet i Agder: professor Elise Seip Tønnessen, førstelektor Nils Rune Birkeland, førsteamanuensis Eli-Marie Danbolt Drange, førsteamanuensis Gunhild Kvåle, førstelektor Magnhild Vollan og professor Gro-Renée Rambø.

Det er etablert på basis av en kvalitativ studie om studenters erfaringer med og opplevelse av kvalitet i det studiet de er en del av. Begrepet studielivskvalitet er et supplement til kvalitet forstått som målbarhet, nytte og effektivitet. Det består av de fem dimensjonene struktur, mestring, aktivitet, relasjon og transformasjon, forkortet til akronymet SMART. Studentene legger vekt på struktur og forutsigbarhet, samt krav og forventninger som er klare. De er opptatt av betydningen av mestringserfaringer og mestringstillit samt aktiviteter som fremmer dialog og samarbeid om læring. De understreker betydningen av relasjoner som gjør at de føler seg sett og tatt alvorlig. Gjennom studiet utvikler studentene seg både faglig og personlig, de erfarer en transformasjon. Sentralt i boken er refleksjoner rundt studentenes erfaringer, vilkårene for god studielivskvalitet og utfordringer knyttet til den rådende forståelsen av kvalitet i dagens høyere utdanning.

    Description: The research project Beatrijs Internationaal brought together about a hundred literary translators and researchers in the field of historical and modern Dutch literature, translation studies and related disciplines, from twenty different language areas. The participants immersed themselves in questions about the international circulation and reception of the famous Middle Dutch legend of Our Lady, from its origins to our own time. Almost a hundred adaptations and translations of the Beatrijs-story were found, and new discoveries are still being made. The case of Beatrijs brought about new theoretical discussions, cooperation and exchange in the field of Dutch Studies, as is demonstrated by this volume. By means of diverse approaches the authors show how a literary text from the relatively small geographical area of the Dutch language can circulate both inside and outside its linguistic borders in different periods. With their wide spectrum of research questions, methodological approaches and selections of material, the contributions are a reflection of the richness of international Dutch Studies in the 21st century. Inspired by translation, adaptation and reception studies, this volume helps us to answer the question which characteristics of a particular text make it a likely candidate for crossing linguistic, geophysical, historical, and other borders. This volume is a contribution to the historiography of the export and dissemination of Dutch literature.

    Description: Sexual health in Flanders describes the results of the first representative population-based study on this topic in Flanders (the Northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). A research team of psychologists, sexologists, sociologists and medical doctors, affiliated with Ghent University, KU Leuven and Ghent University Hospital collaborated on this research project that aimed to explore various aspects of sexual behavior and sexual health in men and women living in Flanders. Apart from providing in reliable, valid, descriptive scientific data, this study offers important information on which a more targeted policy to promote sexual health can be developed. This reference work is based on a survey in which 1832 Flemish men and women – aged 14 to 80 years old – participated and that covered various aspects of sexual health. The focus is not only on sexual experiences and practices; attention is also paid to the relational and social context in which these experiences occur. In addition, a number of chapters elaborate on the sexual start (the first sexual experiences), reproductive health, sexual dysfunctions, cross-border sexual behavior, and profiles of sexual health. The detailed description of the methodology that was used, allows the reader to evaluate the accuracy of the many tables, figures and numbers that are presented. In short, Sexual health in Flanders is an essential reference work for anyone with an interest in a reliable, detailed and scientific image of a broad range of aspects of sexual health in Flanders.

    Description: What does it mean to violate the law on a theatrical stage? This is the central question in the following examination of modern theatre, beginning with the avant-garde, but also including the contemporary and iconoclastic work of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. For the historical avant-garde, art could be the gateway to a new and liberated reality. But then all of existing reality first had to be demolished, and its laws consistently violated. Ultimately, this transgressive programme ends in discouragement and self-sabotage. Such an 'anti-theatre' has been explored most extensively in the writings of the French director and essayist Antonin Artaud. A careful exploration of Artaud's work, emphasizing his actual theatrical productions, shows that this paradox does not necessarily lead to a dead end. Generalized transgression may lead to a theatre that belongs more to philosophy than to art itself.

    Description: Ranging from Polish inspirations in contemporary authors such as Bernlef, Frank Westerman and Erwin Mortier, over the Central European successes of the now forgotten Jo van Ammers-Küller, to the Bulgarian character Firmin Debeljanov in The Sorrow of Belgium: with its focus on the various interrelations between the contemporary literature of the Low countries and the so-called smaller literary cultures located between the German and the Russian language areas, the volume Van Eeden tot heden offers a multi-faceted perspective on a hitherto barely explored topic in twentieth-century European literature. Due to the academic background of the contributing authors the emphasis is on Polish, Hungarian and Czech case studies, though the Balkans are also being dealt with – albeit less prominently. Whereas some contributions search for contacts, links and influences between literatures and literators, some other chapters set up textual encounters in which authors and their works are compared from a thematic, poetic, stylistic or generic angle. Apart from these comparative endeavors, another group of contributors offer reception analysis regarding the overall topic. In the last part of the volume the focus is on issues of (national) representation and the discursive strategies that are used for it.

    Description: "How do you really become a skilled teacher? And what role should guidance play in the education of tomorrow's teachers? This theme is explored through a study of experienced practitioners' formalized counseling conversations with teacher students. The most important questions in the book are about how the practice teacher and teacher conduct conversations. Concretely, the question is: What is the content of the counseling interviews? How are the teacher students evaluated? How is the consequences of the counseling discussions understood? The guide being examined contains a step by step pedagogy. First, the teacher's student must learn to control, master and reflect on the social space both the classroom and the counseling conversation are. This is described as an overall moral and regulatory discourse. This discourse forms the basis for the teacher's next step - which is the actual teaching. The teacher's student must therefore master two discourses - one regulatory discourse and one teaching discourse - in order to become a skilled teacher. In addition, he or she must adapt to the regulatory discourse in the counseling conversation. The latter discourse represents in this book an initiation ritual for the teaching profession. This ritual gives the practice teacher control over the dedication, while limiting the room for maneuver in the counseling conversation. "
    Description: "Hvordan blir man egentlig en dyktig lærer? Og hvilken rolle skal veiledning spille i utdanningen av morgendagens lærere? Denne tematikken utforskes gjennom en studie av erfarne praksislæreres formaliserte veiledningssamtaler med lærerstudenter. De viktigste spørsmålene i boka handler om hvordan praksislærer og lærerstudenter gjennomfører veiledningssamtalene. Helt konkret spørres det: Hva er innholdet i veiledningssamtalene? Hvordan vurderes lærerstudentene? Hvordan forstås konsekvensene av veiledningssamtalene? Veiledningen som undersøkes, inneholder en trinnvis pedagogikk. Først må lærerstudenten lære seg å kontrollere, beherske og reflektere over det sosiale rommet både klasserommet og veiledningssamtalen er. Dette beskrives som en overordnet moralsk og regulerende diskurs. Denne diskursen danner grunnlaget for lærerstudentens neste trinn – som er selve undervisningen. Lærerstudenten må altså beherske to diskurser – én regulerende diskurs og én undervisningsdiskurs – for å bli en dyktig lærer. I tillegg må han eller hun tilpasse seg den regulerende diskursen i veiledningssamtalen. Den sistnevnte diskursen representerer i denne boka et innvielsesritual til læreryrket. Dette ritualet gir praksislæreren kontroll over innvielsen, samtidig som det begrenser handlingsrommet i veiledningssamtalen."

    Description: This book explores images of the house in Dutch-language poetry from the postwar period. On the one hand the archetypical notion of the house has always had an established place in poetry. It is connected to the meaning of house as a building, but even more so as an imaginative house or a home. On the other hand the house is a rich metaphorical concept that is often used for expressing poetical ideas. In a historical survey of modern Dutch-language poetry different images of the house are presented. The overview shows that the choice of certain metaphorical concepts is connected to literary and extra literary contexts, and to the poetical ideas of poets. Conceptual integration – blending theory – is used throughout this book as a theoretical frame. From this perspective poems are regarded as a complex blend, a network of connections which are constructed during the reading and interpreting processes. Finally, the book shows how metaphorical blends are integrated in concrete poems and which kind of house images result from this process.

Coordination is central to creating integrated services for users with complex needs. In order to understand the challenges and opportunities associated with creating such services, one needs knowledge related to organizations and the organizational context. The book's chapters takes on an organizational perspective where patterns and explanations are sought in formal and informal structures, processes and culture. The users’ need for services often cross established boundaries, both organizational and professional.     Description: "I TIMSS Advanced, en studie av elevers kunnskaper i det siste året i videregående skole, var de norske elevenes kompetanse i fysikk helt i verdenstoppen i 1995, noe som ble lagt merke til både nasjonalt og internasjonalt. Siden den gang har det vært en dramatisk nedgang i de norske elevenes prestasjoner. I TIMSS Advanced 2015 målte vi en tilbakegang i elevenes kunnskapesnivå i fysikk på trekvart standardavvik fra 1995. Det er en større nedgang enn vi i Norge har målt i noe annet fag i noen andre internasjonale studier, på noe nivå i skolen. Norge har deltatt i TIMSS Advanced i videregående skole og i TIMSS i grunnskolen jevnlig siden 1995. Vi har derfor en stor databank som gir oss muligheter til å studere og analysere utviklingen i Norge fra 1995 fra mange ulike synsvinkler og perspektiver. Mange av de utfordringene vi står overfor i dag, blant annet når det gjelder miljøet, kan kun løses gjennom forskning og kunnskapsutvikling innen fysikk og andre realfag. Vi trenger å utdanne folk med gode kunnskaper på dette området. At de norske elevenes fysikkprestasjoner har sunket dramatisk fra 1995 til 2015, er derfor bekymringsfullt. I boka tar vi opp og drøfter mange ulike sider for hvordan vi kan bedre de norsk elevenes kunnskaper i fysikk. Et viktig moment er at vi mener Norge har gode muligheter til å bedre undervisningen i fysikk og andre realfag. Vi greide å heve lesenivået blant norske elever gjennom systematisk samarbeid over tid med alle involverte aktører. Vi kan gjøre et tilsvarende løft for realfagene. Det vil være til det beste både for den enkelte elev og for samfunnet som helhet."

    Description: Sociale gelijkheid is goed voor iedereen. Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik, criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch) en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van onszelf te verbeteren. Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven, is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én het voorkomen van ongelijkheid. De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien. De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook nieuwe kennisvragen.     Description: What will be the future role of hermeneutics in literary theory? Can we shape the future of hermeneutics by going back to its tradition and by looking at the way hermeneutics is relevant in other disciplines? The new issue of Cahier voor Literatuurwetenschap has two objectives. First, we wish to study the role of hermeneutics in other disciplines, such as the philosophy of history, theology, and the cognitive sciences. It will be clear that literary theory benefits from this interdisciplinary exercise. Second, we will have a closer look at the hermeneutical tradition in literary theory. Important chapters from the history of hermeneutics (e.g., Schleiermacher, Heidegger, Iser) are revisited and its influence in recent theoretical developments is considered.

    Description: PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) er en internasjonal undersøkelse av 15-åringers kompetanser i noen sentrale fagområder – lesing, matematikk og naturfag. Naturfag er hovedområde i PISA 2015. Undersøkelsen gjennomføres hvert tredje år. I PISA 2015 er hele undersøkelsen for første gang gjennomført digitalt. Det har blant annet gitt mulighet for å ha med nye typer oppgaver, for eksempel interaktive simuleringsoppgaver i naturfag. Denne rapporten presenterer resultater fra den sjette gjennomføringen av PISA-undersøkelsen.     Description: Language research is currently in a state of flux. The phenomenon of language is not merely the topic of investigation in linguistics, it is examined by a multitude of scholars with different scientific backgrounds. In order to examine how these various disciplines approach language, a think-tank was founded in 2002, called DITO, Dynamisch Inter(-en trans)disciplinair onderzoek, or Dynamic Inter- (and trans)disciplinary Research. The think-tank is located at the Belgian Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels).     Description: This book studies literary sociability during the belle époque (1890-1914) by comparing and relating organizations of authors with intellectual sociability in general. Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author’s societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between ‘dilettante’ writers on the one hand and self declared ‘professional’ authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity.

    Description: This third volume of Lage Landen Studies offers a glimpse of recent international and internationalizing trends in Dutch Studies. It presents a comparative view of the virtually synchronic dynamics of the translation, promotion and reception of contemporary Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in five Romance languages between 1996 and 2009. This interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on the crossroads of language, literature and culture, as well as on aspects of the sociologies of literature and translation, is combined with views from translation studies, comparative literature, and bibliology in order to build bridges between theory and practice. The first part is devoted to the seldom-heard perspective of the translator and dissects the circumstances in which works by Arnon Grunberg – and by his heteronym Marek van der Jagt – are translated, promoted and received in five Romance languages. The function and ‘visual translation’ of book covers are also analyzed. Notwithstanding the relative homogeneity of the languages, their cultural background and geographical location, remarkable differences come to light. The first part rounds off by looking at the promotional possibilities of writer’s tours and translation workshops in the target countries.

    Description: The central theme of this issue is the singularity of general and comparative literary theory in the Low Countries. How do they combine insights from neighboring linguistic areas, more specifically the dominant French, English and German traditions? In what branches were and are Flemish and Dutch literary theorists specifically strong or innovative? Which theorists and critics were influential? The questions addressed here are meant to instigate a debate on the future of general and comparative literary theory in the Low countries. The issue consists of two parts: ‘The Text and its Limits’ focuses on intra-textual models and criticism, ‘Limits in Context’ looks at the impact and shape of trends and schools of literary studies in the Low Countries.

    Description: A storm at sea, hanging cliffs, volcano eruptions at night, threatening thunderclouds over a desolate mountain landscape: all these phenomena incite both fear and pleasure, astonishment and fascination. We call them sublime, after the feeling of the sublime. In the eighteenth century the sublime became the exciting alternative to the beautiful. The concept has ancient roots, but branches out into French, British, German, and Dutch cultures. Stemming originally from rhetoric, in the course of the eighteenth century it became an aesthetic, philosophical and literary concept. In this study the history of the sublime is told for the first time in Dutch. This book focuses on Dutch contributions on the sublime, in the light of the international history of the concept of the sublime. From the earliest translations to the original ideas of Johannes Kinker and Willem Bilderdijk: the Dutch sublime reflects both the entwinement with the European Enlightenment and the specific nature of Dutch culture in the long eighteenth century.
    Description: Een storm op zee, overhangende kliffen, nachtelijke vulkaanuitbarstingen, dreigende donderwolken boven een woest berglandschap: al deze verschijnselen boezemen tegelijk angst en genot, ontzetting en fascinatie in. We noemen ze subliem, naar het verheven gevoel dat ze oproepen. Het sublieme gold in de achttiende eeuw als het spannende alternatief voor het schone. Het begrip heeft antieke wortels, maar ook Franse, Engelse, Duitse, en Nederlandse vertakkingen. Oorspronkelijk een begrip uit de retorica groeide het in de achttiende eeuw uit tot een esthetisch, filosofisch en literair concept. In deze studie wordt voor het eerst de geschiedenis van het verhevene in het Nederlands verteld. Centraal in dit boek staan een aantal Nederlandse bijdragen over het verhevene, die hier worden gelezen in het kader van de internationale begripsgeschiedenis van het sublieme. Van de vroegste vertalingen tot de eigenzinnige ideeën van Johannes Kinker en Willem Bilderdijk: in het Nederlandse verhevene wordt zowel de verbondenheid met de Europese Verlichting als het bijzondere van de eigen cultuur in de lange achttiende eeuw weerspiegeld.

    Description: Denne boken handler om leseferdighetene til elever i 10-årsalderen. I Norge er elevene da på 4. og 5. klassetrinn, og det forventes at de i stadig større grad skal bruke lesing for å lære fag. Hvordan står det til med barnas leseferdigheter? Gjennom leseundersøkelsen PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) blir vi kjent med 10-åringenes lesing. I tillegg til å kartlegge hvor godt barna leser, gir PIRLS også viktig informasjon om forhold som påvirker utvikling av leseferdigheter. Hvilken betydning har alder ved skolestart, klassestørrelse, lærerens kompetanse og rektors holdninger? Hvilke forskjeller er det mellom lesekompetansen til gutter og jenter, og hvordan følger skolen opp dem som strever? Og hva skjer når elevene leser digitalt? Siden PIRLS har blitt gjennomført hvert femte år siden 2001, kan vi også studere utviklingen i leseferdigheter over tid. I denne boken presenteres resultatene fra PIRLS 2016. Oppmerksomheten er særlig rettet mot norske forhold. Fordi PIRLS gjennomføres i over 50 land, kan vi også gi et detaljert bilde av hvordan norske elever klarer seg sammenlignet med elever internasjonalt.     Description: Over the last few decades cultural sociology and book history have stimulated the study of publishers and their role in the production, distribution, reception and consumption of literature. As such these disciplines have constantly reminded us that literary theory does not study ‘autonomous artefacts’, but texts which are mediated and influenced by various ‘institutions’. But what are the implications? The contributions to this issue of Cahier voor Literatuurwetenschap confront the results of recent and ongoing studies about publishing with the disciplinary idiosyncrasies of general and comparative literature. They not only demonstrate the rich diversity which is typical of this branch of literary studies as far as its method, subject matter and theoretical framework is concerned. They also evaluate acquired ideas and, above all, anticipate new challenges.

Denne boka handlar om det som skjer når danningsteori møter utfordringane med digital teknologi i skulen og særleg med bruken av mobile einingar (m-læring) i lærarutdanninga. Undervisningstema som er drøfta, er filosofi og etikk, engelsk litteratur og kunst og handverk. Sentrale perspektiv er henta frå den tyske teoretikaren Wolfgang Klafki (1927–2016). Klafkis kategoriale danningsteori blir kritisk drøfta i lys av dagens digitale utfordringar, og mottakinga av teorien hans i norsk pedagogikk og didaktikk blir òg vurdert. Forfattarane argumenterer for at Klafki framleis er aktuell. Eit sentralt poeng for Klafki var at danning er tosidig; ho har alltid både ei formal og ei materiell side. Vi kan ikkje «lære å lære» utan å lære noko. Han peika også på at det konkrete emnet har ei generell side, ein kategori, av større eller mindre danningsverdi. For å kunne velje læringsstoff og metode, må læraren og læreplanmakaren må ha ein fagleg idé om kva dette kan vere.

    Description: To what extent is it possible for a literary text to contribute to the ethical development of its reader? This book tries to provide readers with a nuanced answer to this question, as well as with methodological premises to bring to light the ethical effects of a literary text. The novels of the Dutch author Frans Kellendonk (1951-1990) offer insightful contexts and questions related to this issue. Kellendonk is one of the most controversial Dutch writers of the end of the twentieth century. Today, he is mainly considered as a kind of prophet that advocated a certain scepticism towards a multicultural society. Kellendonk’s novels systematically put into question one-way interpretations of their works. They invite readers to find other interpretations, putting into question the simplifying conceptual framework that has shaped the author’s posture until now. They also lay the foundations for an ethics of reading that relies on the very diegetic world to which the reader can adjust his/her own reading. This ethics is more specifically an invitation to recognize the undecidability that every reading entails.

    Description: This book treats the spectacular rise in life expectancy during the last three centuries. It is the first study to bring together both published and unpublished material about the history of the health of Belgian men and women and to analyze it critically. Isabelle Devos studies the mechanisms of the historic fall in the death rate in an original manner and answers the question why research on the causes of this decline has not progressed faster. While the discipline of historical demography orients the first part of her book, the discipline of historical epidemiology provides the perspective taken in the second part, in which the role of insects as spreaders of disease is explored. Essential in her study is the importance of local medical practitioners who already at the end of the Ancien Régime warned of the dangers present in the environment.     Description: Literature traditionally holds a special place in society. This fact can be ascribed especially to literature’s unique capability to urge its audience and readers to allow a voice other than their own to resound within. And yet, literature’s role raises questions regarding one’s responsibility and engagement – questions that nearly every generation asks itself time and again with an ever changing urgency. Eight literary scholars from the research group ‘Literature – Ethics – Law’ (Ghent University) focus on this complex dialogue between literature and ethics. In the process, they arrive at answers that tease out crucial historical developments (from Plato to HIV/AIDS-prose), while also attending to the impact of methodological reevaluations during the search for such answers.

    Description: Despite all attempts by many governments in the world to ascribe to the Holy Grail of ‘sustainable development’, Ecosystem Earth is confronted with a gargantuan sustainability crisis. The West has seduced the rest of the world to copy its highly attractive, albeit unsustainable development paradigm. In a finite world the eco-impact of the global consumer class cannot be extrapolated to all human beings. The ecological crisis and the global justice issue are linked to each other as Siamese twins. Part 1 of Terra Incognita presents an environmental and economic analysis of the ecological crisis. Using the pre-analytical viewpoint of ecological economics, the authors develop a conceptual framework in which ecology and global justice are united in one vision. To unravel the roots of the contemporary crisis the authors describe in Part 2 the ecological history of the human-nature interaction. Based on an interdisciplinary approach they discuss the three historical lifestyles: those of the hunter-gatherers, the agrarian society and the industrial era. Finally, in Part 3 the authors explore potential systemic solutions, which need to keep or make the world livable. This innovative book is supported by the stimulating belief that the human future remains principally open and can still be influenced by each of us.

    Description: For the first time since Chevrels seminal monography Le naturalisme: étude d’un mouvement littéraire international (1982), this study presents an encompassing approach to European naturalism. By means of a logical theoretical framework drawing on both comparative literature and narratology, Pieter Borghart proposes a more nuanced definition of naturalism than those traditionally found in the existing literature. By analyzing naturalism in 19th century Modern Greek literature, the second part of this monography concretely shows how this definition offers fruitful perspectives to reassess literary history.

    Description: The Spade in de Dijk is the first synthesis on the organisation of water management in Coastal Flanders during the later Middle Ages. Based on the unique archival evidence produced by local water boards (wateringen), large landowners and local and regional authorities, Tim Soens argues for the occurrence of profound changes in coastal water management in the later Middle Ages. Water management gradually became less inclusive, investments lowered, and flood risk increased. This evolution was triggered by the social transition from a peasant society of land-owning smallholders to a society of absentee landlords and large tenant farmers.
