    Description: How do patterns of national inclusion and exclusion make themselves felt at school? What experiences do students have in their everyday school life? How are they shaped by these experiences? This empirical study examines processes of subjectivation in schooling biographies of young Kurdish women in Turkey and asks how relations of inclusion and exclusion in the nation-state are inscribed in subjects through school. It shows the relevance of processes of appropriation and resistance for the formation of self-conceptions in the face of natio-ethno-cultural (non-)belonging and closes with thoughts on marginalized agency.

Vor diesem Hintergrund tragen entsprechende Orientierungen und Praktiken potentiell zur Genese sozialer Ungleichheit bei. Wie dies geschieht, untersucht die Autorin auf der Grundlage von drei ethnographischen Fallstudien mittels qualitativer Mehrebenenanalyse.     Description: Education is and will probably remain the all-dominant topic of the 21st century. The consequences of a lack of or exclusion from education must be correspondingly dramatic. In the economic and sociological labour market literature, the same dominant explanatory pattern, the displacement mechanism, can now be found for the increasing disadvantage of low-skilled persons: the low-skilled are "displaced" by the better-skilled. In contrast to the theoretical considerations and empirical analyses in this book, the significance of processes of increasing discreditation, social impoverishment and stigmatization is worked out and emphasized - it is therefore more a matter of social inequality than of "displacement".

    Description: What are the connections between space, control and world view? The author answers this question using the concept of cognitive mapping, which he presents and discusses as a theoretical concept of social analysis and as an empirical means of research. Surveillance - so his thesis - makes the examination and control of worldviews possible and thus becomes a form of social orientation. At the same time, worldviews also provide a basis for understanding attitudes towards surveillance measures. Surveillance in this sense is not a product of modernity, but occurs in all historical epochs and serves the organization of reality. Space and spatial notions of the world are shaped by the environment and the experiences people have in it. Socio-spatial conceptions are the origin of discourses of surveillance and are in turn influenced by forms of control. Worldviews can be used to trace attitudes and surveillance and the orientation patterns behind them. This book deals with these interrelations using the concept of cognitive mapping. This concept analyses causes and effects and explains how they play an important role in processes of social exclusion/integration or the possibilities of identity formation.

    Description: Using virtue as an example, the study provides an insight into the normative and subjective orientations of young people in their everyday school context. The concept of virtue in previous educational debates is juxtaposed with a perspective that incorporates the students' point of view: In contrast to the normatively used concept of virtue, the present findings present virtue of honesty as an ambivalent behavior that is situation-, context- and person-dependent. Since ancient Greece, virtues have been a central theme of pedagogy. Educational philosophers have repeatedly developed catalogues of virtues which they assumed could guide practical education. The present work asks how young people adapt to educational demands and undermine them to their own advantage. The question is pursued using the example of school-relevant virtue honesty by interviewing 16 young people in the school context using problem-centred interviews. The results of the study refer to explicit and implicit rules of honesty, which can be divided into conventional and unconventional rules.

    Description: Organization and profession - although they seem to contradict each other again and again in theory, in practice they are interlocked. For this reason, the author develops the theoretical construct of "organization-bound professionalism" in her work and relates it to the field of lifelong learning. The author proposes to grasp the social capacity to work in the pedagogical field in the social form of reflexively individualized professionalism and to focus on the structuring power of organization as a constitutional context of professionalism. It examined a four-year process of employee development in an educational institution for institutionalising competence-based forms of learning in continuing vocational education and training. Counselling and research were integrated, thus opening up the developmental process for a theory-generating reconstruction. Thus, it is assumed that organisation and professionalism are contingent within a socio-historical space of opportunity. Accordingly, plural concepts of what is understood by professionalism and organisation in theory and lived as the social reality of the educational institution are unfolded.

    Description: What relevance does gender have as a structuring and structured characteristic within the present circumstances? The authors - dissatisfied with the scientific state of the art - animate this discussion and lead it into new regions of thought. The concept of structure refers to social relations and institutions and focuses on inequalities, always in relation to social and institutional (gender) relations. To this end, the concept of the subject refers to actions and thus focuses more on individuals. The essential question here is: What relevance does gender have as a structuring and structured characteristic within current social conditions, structures and norms? In addition to theoretical contributions to already established subject- and structure-theoretical considerations, other authors concentrate on research-practical turns of the theoretical concepts. This volume aims to capture a dialectical interweaving of individual and social structuring processes in relation to gender.
