    Description: This volume examines the linguistic dimension of vigilance in different contexts.     Das latènezeitliche Gräberfeld von Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge, Flur Reinthal Süd, Niederösterreich (2023)

    Description: Die hier vorliegende Publikation ist das erste Ergebnis in Monographieform des APART-Projekts "Migrationsphänomene in der Frühlatènezeit“ und des FWF-Projekts P-15977-G02 "The celtic cemetery of Mannersdorf (Lower Austria) in the context of east and west cultural contact“. In Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge, Flur Reinthal Süd wurden von 1976 bis 1984 vom Museum Mannersdorf durch H. Schutzbier und F. Opferkuh und dem Bundesdenkmalamt (G. Melzer) insgesamt 96 Körper und Brandgräber der Früh- und Mittellatènezeit ausgegraben. Das Gräberfeld selbst erstreckt sich in nw-so Richtung mit einer Länge von 200 und einer Breite von ca. 45 Metern. Es hat eine Belegungsdauer von Latène A2/B1 bis C1, was einer absoluten Datierung von ca. 400 bis 200 vuZ. entspricht. Die Qualität der Beigaben zeigt sich neben den Materialien Silber, Gold, Glas und Korallen vor allem in der technischen Ausführung der Artefakte. Ein markantes Stück des Gräberfeldes ist eine Bronzesitula, die ein Importstück aus Norditalien darstellt. Bestimmte Gebiete wie das Mittelrheingebiet, die Champagne und das Balkangebiet müssen damals intensive Verbindungen in den niederösterreichischen Raum gehabt haben. Zur Geschlechterverteilung im Gräberfeld ist zu bemerken, dass mit 48 Personen doppelt so viele Frauen wie Männer (24) vorkommen. Es lässt sich eine Gruppe der sogenannten "Lt B1-Elite- bzw. Spitzengräber“ herausarbeiten, die sich als die höchste Ausstattungsgruppe mit Doppelfuß- und Handreifen sowie dem Vorkommen von Edelmetall definieren. Die Nekropole gehört mit ihren 96 Gräbern zu den mittelgroßen des mittleren Donaugebiets. Es zeigt sich, dass es sich bei einem Teil der in Mannersdorf Bestatteten eventuell um eine Gruppe von Menschen handelt, die aus dem Gebiet der heutigen Schweiz stammten. Eine ebenso wahrscheinliche These wäre, dass es sich um Angehörige einer "Oberschicht“ handelt, die weitreichende wirtschaftliche und verwandtschaftliche Kontakte (und dadurch auch Mobilität) durch den "mitteleuropäischen Korridor“ und die anschließenden Gebiete wie Norditalien hatten und dies durch ihre Tracht und den zusätzlichen Besitz zum Ausdruck brachten. Ergänzende Analysen von Bronzematerial, Keramik, Tierknochen, Eisenschmiedetechnik, Goldschmiedetechnik, Textil- und Herstellungstechnik und Steinartefakten stellen einen unverzichtbaren Teil der Darstellung dieses latènezeitlichen Gräberfeldes dar.Gedruckt mit Unterstützung des Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF).

    Description: Im Juni 2007 fand in Oberkirch und Renchen unter dem Thema «Grimmelshausens Simplicissimus im Kontext des europäischen Romans» der Kongress der Grimmelshausens-Gesellschaft statt. Dieser Band enthält die Beiträge des Kongresses und geht der Frage nach, weshalb derSimplicissimus als einziger deutschsprachiger Roman der frühen Neuzeit bis auf den heutigen Tag in hohem kanonischen Ansehen steht, was den Roman, wie sein Autor es wünschte, «aufhebens Werth» gemacht hat. Die Referenten untersuchen die Bedeutung des Simplicissimus anhand von Vergleichen mit der europäischen Romantradition. Dabei geht es weniger um Quellenfragen als um Fragen der Qualität: um Grimmelshausens Anteil an der Herausbildung einer modernen Romanpoetologie, um seinen unkonventionellen Umgang mit den Konstruktionsprinzipien des hohen und niederen Romans, mit der realistisch-satirischen Erzähltradition und den Formproblemen des autobiographischen Erzählens sowie um seine Kunstgriffe bei der Einformung unterschiedlichster Materien. Hinzu kommen weitere Beiträge der Grimmelshausen-Forschung sowie Rezensionen zu Neuerscheinungen.

    Description: The publishing house and bookshop Treuttel & Würtz was a hub of European exchange par excellence around 1800. While the publishing house targeted a transcultural elite audience with publications by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Germaine de Staël, the bookshop supplied customers throughout Europe with its branches in Strasbourg, Paris and London as well as its widely ramified trade network. For the first time, this study examines the working and influence of the publishing bookshop and embeds it in the cultural-historical context: from the organisation of the book trade and the cooperation between booksellers to library history and the emergence of new academic disciplines such as the modern philologies at the beginning of the 19th century. All these areas were characterised by a transnational market, which was served by Treuttel & Würtz in a way that can be described as practised world literature.

Erstmals werden in dieser Studie Funktionsweise und Einfluss der Verlagsbuchhandlung untersucht und in den kulturhistorischen Kontext eingebettet: von der Organisation des Buchhandels und den Kooperationen der Buchhändler über Bibliotheksgeschichte bis zur Entstehung neuer akademischer Disziplinen wie der modernen Philologien zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts. All diese Bereiche zeichneten sich durch einen transnationalen Markt aus, der von Treuttel & Würtz in einer Weise bedient wurde, die als praktizierte Weltliteratur bezeichnet werden kann.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

Dit boek beschrijft hoe de redacties en de uitgevers van professionele tijdschriften zich hebben ingespannen om hun rol als informatiemakelaar goed te vervullen. Verder laat het zien hoe zij hun product voortdurend hebben aangepast aan de steeds hogere eisen van lezers wat betreft toegankelijkheid en vormgeving. Ten laatste is er aandacht voor de wijze waarop zij steeds de bedrijfseconomische voorwaarden hebben vervuld om de continuïteit van hun werk te verzekeren. Zonder deze professionele tijdschriften was Nederland niet geworden wat het nu is.

    Description: 1933 war der Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund von den Nationalsozialisten zerschlagen worden. Nach intensiven Aufbaujahren seit 1945 markierte der erste Bundestag des ASB im Jahr 1952 einen wichtigen Meilenstein. 70 Jahre danach legt der ASB Deutschland e.V., der heute von über 1,4 Millionen Mitgliedern unterstützt und getragen wird, eine unabhängige wissenschaftliche Untersuchung zur Geschichte seiner Wiedergründung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vor. Die Studie beleuchtet die Bedingungen, unter denen Samariterinnen und Samariter ihre Dienste am Menschen wieder aufnahmen, aus einer gesamtdeutschen Perspektive. In der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone und später in der DDR scheiterten alle Bemühungen. Im Westen hingegen gelang die Entwicklung des ASB zu einer wichtigen Hilfs- und Wohlfahrtsorganisation. Bis 1952 hatten sich in der Bundesrepublik und in West-Berlin 80 Kolonnen mit über 8 000 Mitgliedern wieder- bzw. neugegründet. Doch wer waren die Protagonisten der Wiedergründung des ASB und was trieb sie an? Welche Rolle spielte dabei jene bis 1933 im ASB so wichtige Gruppe von Ärztinnen und Ärzten, die ab 1933 als Juden verfolgt wurden und überlebt hatten? Fanden diese nach 1945 zurück zum ASB? Welchen Anteil am Neuaufbau des ASB hatten in die Bundesrepublik geflüchtete und vertriebene Samariterinnen und Samariter? Und nicht zuletzt: Warum scheiterte die Wiedergründung des ASB in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone und in der DDR?

    Description: This book tells the story of Utrecht University’s colonial past. Ever since the university was founded in 1636, its scholars and students have been involved in various activities in the Dutch colonies of the West and East Indies. There was a great interest in the world of the 'other' far away: the natural world as well as their cultures, languages and religious systems. The basic assumption always was: we are 'developed', they are 'not yet developed'. Superiority served as guiding principle. By the end of the nineteenth century, Utrecht’s research activities in the colonies were dominated by biology, medicine, geology, and physical anthropology/anatomy. It was understood to be 'pure research' in the colonies. But it was pure colonial research. The University benefited enormously from those research activities. The latest phase of 'university development cooperation' (since the 1980s), was to some extent a continuation of that approach.

    Description: De Friese adel van de late middeleeuwen opereerde in een niet-feodaal gebied dat lange tijd geen landsheer kende. Hadden de leden, hoofdelingen genaamd, zich uit de boerenstand omhooggewerkt of vormden ze vanouds een gesloten stand? Hoe zat het met hun vermogen? Dit boek zoomt in op Rienck Hemmema en zijn vrouw Ath Roorda. Zij exploiteerden in de jaren 1569-1573 een boerderij in Hitzum onder Franeker. Uit Riencks Rekenboeck blijkt dat hij geen eigenerfde boer was, maar een edelman met een royale levensstijl en meer inkomsten dan uit die ene boerderij. Een ruimtelijke reconstructie van zijn bezit en dat van zijn voorgeslacht toont hoe agrarisch kapitaal per generatie werd gevormd en overgedragen. Dit beeld wordt getoetst aan een Quote 200 uit 1513 en huwelijksakten uit 1450-1550. Een belangrijke conclusie is dat de Friese adel getalsmatig omvangrijk was, met veel families die leefden van twee of drie boerderijen. De figuur van de edelman-boer kwam dus vaak voor.

    Description: Der Schweizer Trotzkismus in der Nachkriegszeit bestand aus kleinen, aber beständigen politischen Gruppierungen. Diese schafften es trotz ihrer geringen Größe und entgegen dem antikommunistischen Klima der geistigen Landesverteidigung, für sie zentrale Themen in breiteren gesellschaftlichen Kreisen ins Gespräch zu bringen. So etwa den Widerstand gegen die atomare Bewaffnung der Schweizer Armee, die Solidarität mit der algerischen Bevölkerung während des Algerienkrieges oder Forderungen nach einem allgemeingültigen Mindestlohn. Lucas Federer untersucht das Wirken und die politischen Konzeptionen dieser einzigartigen Strömung der Arbeiter*innenbewegung und fragt nach ihrem Einfluss auf die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen der Schweiz im Kalten Krieg.

Bis heute nimmt diese Praxis eine Schlüsselfunktion bei der Entscheidung über den schulischen Verbleib der Kinder ein. Jona Tomke Garz untersucht in seiner interdisziplinär angelegten historischen Studie das sonderpädagogische Aufschreibesystem am Beispiel Berlin mit Fokus auf die damit verbundenen Wissenspraktiken. Dabei zeigt er auf, welche Bedeutung das Beobachten, Schreiben und Verarbeiten für die Formation des Wissens über »Schwachsinn« hat - gerade im Hinblick auf die Institutionalisierung und Professionalisierung der »Schwachsinnigenpädagogik«.

Ergänzt wird der Band mit einer Aufstellung der Mitglieder der Kreisräte, der Stadträte der kreisfreien Städte, der Vorstände der Kreistage und der Stadtverordnetenversammlung (rund 2000 Personen im Personenindex). Eine Aufstellung der wichtigsten Verwaltungsstrukturen auf Landesebene hilft bei einem schnellen Einstieg und Überblick.

    Description: ​Dieses Open-Access-Buch befasst sich mit der Einstellung der bayerischen Militärführung in Hinblick auf die Rezeption als auch Adaption technischer Innovation bzw. deren ersten praktischen Anwendung im Krieg von 1866. Das 19. Jahrhundert stellte das bayerische Königreich vor mehrere Herausforderungen. Die militärische Partizipation an den Napoleonischen Kriegen endete zwar erfolgreich, jedoch brachte sie beinahe die Zahlungsunfähigkeit des Staates mit sich. Obwohl die bayerische Streitmacht nach wie vor den großen Stolz des Landes darstellte, rückte sie fortan in den Fokus der Einsparungspolitik König Ludwigs I. Folglich waren die Mittel, welche der Armee zur Verfügung gestellt wurden, streng reguliert und reichten lediglich dafür aus, um die laufenden Kosten zu decken. Eine schleichende, degenerative Heeresentwicklung – sowohl auf personeller, als auch technischer Ebene – resultierte hieraus. Problematisch wurde diese Vernachlässigung, nachdem immer mehr europäische Streitmächte einen technischen Modernisierungsprozess begannen. Neue Waffensysteme wurden erprobt und eingeführt, die Nutzung der Eisenbahn zur Erhöhung der Mobilität diskutiert. Wie stand die bayerische Armeeführung diesen Entwicklungen gegenüber? Konnten bzw. durften derartige Prozesse einfach ignoriert werden?

    Description: This study investigates the function of the recourse to the messianic tradition of Judaism among German-Jewish intellectuals between 1900 and 1933 (Benjamin, Bloch, Broch, Buber, Landauer, Rosenzweig, Scholem). Messianic figures of thought play an important role in the Jewish discourse of identity. Moreover, they are used productively in the creation of general theories in the realm of cultural studies (philosophy of language and history, theological-political thinking). The messianic figures of speech include not only figures of thought but also rhetorical figures of speech or tropes that reflect various constellations of sacrality and secularity in the modern era.

Angelika Strobel analysiert die Auswirkungen dieser gesundheitspräventiven Maßnahmen auf die Verwaltungsapparate und die Bevölkerung. Am Beispiel der ländlichen Selbstverwaltung und der Eisenbahnbetriebe verdeutlicht sie die Praxis von Public Health in der Verwaltung des russischen Imperiums und leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Geschichte von Verwaltungspraxis und Staatlichkeit in der europäischen Moderne.

A Miracle of St Martin – Utrecht a Happy City tells the story of Utrecht and St Martin. At the occasion of Utrecht’s 900th anniversary as a free city, the book elucidates how the bond between Utrecht and its patron saint since the early Middle Ages inspired people to contribute to a happy city. The book is designed as a diptych, focusing first on St Martin’s Utrecht patronage around the year 900, when the settlement built within the walls of the former Roman castellum endured difficult times due to political and climatological troubles. Bishop Radbod (899/900-917) calls upon his fellow citizens to cultivate the commemoration of St Martin and to appeal to the saintly figure in times of hardship. The book includes a translation of Radbod’s Miracle Story of St Martin and unravels the secrets of his Gregorian office for the summer feast of St Martin’s Translation on July 4th. The second part of the book focuses on St Martin’s role in the multicultural twenty-first-century city of Utrecht. The popular St Martin’s Parade establishes a new celebration of the saint with music, street art and a parade of lights. Reflecting on this newly (re-)invented tradition we discover St Martin anew as a symbolic figure representing values of the inclusive city in past and present. The book is lavishly illustrated with images of St Martin and his cult in medieval and modern-day Utrecht.
