    Description: Medienphilosophie ist das kritische Nachdenken über die Medien und das Phänomen der Medialität.     Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Bewegungen sind nicht nur an räumliche, sondern auch an zeitliche Verhältnisse gebunden. Die daraus resultierenden Widersprüche gelten bis heute als ungelöst. So ist es zwar möglich, Bewegungen zu messen und zu berechnen - als problematisch erweist sich jedoch die weitergehende Frage, wie ein beweglicher Körper im selben Zeitmoment an unterschiedlichen Orten zugleich sein kann. Da einfache empirische Antworten sowie rein gedankliche Lösungen nicht zu geben sind, fokussiert Franz Bockrath vor allem auf jene sozialphilosophischen und kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätze, die Zeit und Bewegung in ihrem widersprüchlichen Zusammenhang begreifen.

Diese Frage beschäftigt viele Museen, Archive und Bibliotheken, allerdings fehlen entsprechende Erhebungen, die bei der Umsetzung helfen könnten. Im Auftrag der Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte (SKKG) in Winterthur widmet sich Sonja Gasser dieser Leerstelle und analysiert in einer Umfrage die Anforderungen zur digitalen Repräsentation von Sammlungen. Die Ergebnisse bieten Museen und anderen Kulturinstitutionen Orientierung und Inspiration - beispielsweise bei der Entwicklung oder Erweiterung eines digitalen Angebots und der Abstimmung digitaler Sammlungen auf die Bedürfnisse der Nutzenden.

In einer systematischen Analyse des Gebrauchs des Begriffsregisters in Agambens Werk geht Hendrik Rungelrath den Verbindungen des messianischen Diskurses unter anderem zur Philosophie der Kunst, der Potenzialität oder der Sprache nach. Im Hinblick auf die performative Dimension des Messianischen legt er dabei Konturen einer messianisch bestimmten Theologie frei.

    Description: Wie kaum ein anderes Gefühl ist Mitleid von Unsicherheiten geprägt: Der Begriff »Mitleid« wird widersprüchlich verwendet - aber auch das Gefühl selbst kann schwanken. Dies wirft Fragen der Angemessenheit auf. Georg Sillers genaue Lektüre Ludwig Wittgensteins zeigt, dass solche Unbestimmtheiten jedoch nicht als Defizite gesehen werden müssen: Erstens sind psychologische Begriffe in ihrer Bedeutungsvielfalt Teil unserer Lebensform und damit mehr als die Bezeichnung von Zuständen, zweitens stellt schwankendes Mitleid eine ganz eigene Haltung dar - und zwar häufig die des Respekts. In ihrer rassismustheoretischen Analyse entwickelt Veronika Kourabas die heuristischen Konzepte Ge-Brauch und Ver-Brauch, um Rassismus als paradoxes Ungleichheitsverhältnis zu erfassen. ›Gastarbeit‹ wird dadurch als Ge-Brauchsverhältnis greifbar, das Migrationsandere ökonomisch einbezieht, aber über rassistisch vermittelte Diskurse zugleich ausschließt. Mit diesen Ansätzen sowie der Rekonstruktion widerständiger Praktiken wird nicht nur die Analyse und Kritik vergangener, sondern auch gegenwärtig dominanter Diskurse über Flucht und Migration eröffnet.

    Description: The growing number of children and adolescents with a migrant background in Italy has radically changed the composition of the country’s primary and secondary school populations. However, only recently have some of these students have begun entering university. This lag can be explained by the fact that a history of migration brings with it multiple economic, social and educational disadvantages and weaknesses. The book More than is required. Tales of university students with a migrant background is a collection of biographies of young people who, having exceeded society’s common expectations —and therefore having done “more than is required"—have achieved exceptional scholastic results, leading them to wish to continue their studies at university. Their stories of family and school, relationships with peers, and their ambitions, successes and struggles reveal the critical challenges they face, and offer some ways current educational policies can be improved.

Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Wie sind die Menschenrechte heute angemessen zu verstehen? Sich ausschließlich auf ihren rechtlichen Gehalt oder ethisch-moralischen Anspruch zu konzentrieren, genügt dafür offenbar nicht. Notwendig ist es vielmehr, die Dimension des Politischen, die diesen Rechten eigen ist, systematisch in den Blick zu nehmen: Erst im Feld der sozialen Praxis und in den historisch bezeugten Erfahrungen handelnder Individuen wird ein moralisch-rechtlicher Anspruch konkret greifbar. Am Beispiel des zeitgenössischen Umgangs mit dem Erbe des französischen Kolonialkrieges in Algerien setzt Daniel Bogner Theorie und Praxis, Normativität und Geschichte konsequent miteinander in Beziehung. Ergebnis ist ein neues Verständnis der Menschenrechte - jenseits der Sackgassen einer rein historischen oder exklusiv geltungstheoretischen Perspektive.

    Description: This essay focuses on light and theories of combustion in the late 18th century. But it does so “on the nitrogen side”: that is, on the side of those inert three-quarters of air that do not contribute to respiration and, therefore, do not trigger the light-emitting response of phosphorus in experiments. In analyzing the variety of opinions broadly (and imprecisely) ascribable to the “Lavoisierian-Phlogistonist” dispute, this book sheds special light on the non-Lavoisierian German context where Johann Friedrich August Göttling performed his tests on phosphorus and nitrogen – and, subsequently, on Lazzaro Spallanzani’s crucial role in the debate. The book pays attention to theories, but it also deals with experimental practice. Therefore, it tells a story of procedures and instruments: in fact, it was especially on this tricky field that the understanding of the phosphorus-nitrogen relationship was achieved. In reading these pages, we shall meet the great heroes of early chemistry as well as the “artisans of innovation” who gave substantial contributions to the advancement of their discipline: a rich fresco that gives us a clear idea of the complexity of the methodological debate at the turn of the century, and of how widespread scientific activity was at that time.

    Description: Wenn wir Menschen als vernünftige Tiere verstehen, droht ein Widerspruch zwischen Bindung und Freiheit: Einerseits soll Vernunft darin bestehen, dass man die Normen des eigenen Handelns selbst bestimmt - dadurch realisiert sich Freiheit. Andererseits aber muss diesen Normen auch eine bindende Kraft zugesprochen werden. Wenn man sie immer wieder selbst bestimmt, scheint eine solche Kraft jedoch nicht verständlich zu werden. So entsteht der Eindruck, die mit Vernunft verbundene Bindung an Normen widerstreite der Freiheit der Selbstbestimmung. Zur Überwindung dieses Widerspruchs klärt Alexander Brödner den Zusammenhang zwischen Selbstbestimmung und Selbstkritik auf.

Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Mit Volker Braun, Lutz Seiler und Christa Wolf sind nur drei von zahlreichen Schriftsteller*innen genannt, die mit einem bis dato kaum beachteten Kulturphänomen verbunden sind - den »schreibenden Arbeitern« der DDR, die über 30 Jahre identitätsstiftend im politischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Ostdeutschland wirkten. Die Studie von Anne M. N. Sokoll arbeitet erstmals die Entwicklung von den Anfängen in den 1950er Jahren bis zur versuchten Neuetablierung im Deutschland nach 1990 sowie die Ästhetik und die Kulturpraxis der Laienautor*innen detailliert auf. Damit eröffnet sich ein Bezugshorizont zu aktuellen gesellschaftspolitischen und kulturellen Diskursen, die auch 30 Jahre nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung virulent sind.

Verena Mund untersucht diese Orte des Arbeitsalltags in Bildern, Filmen und Texten sowie ihre Implikationen für Handlungsmacht.

Ein höllisch-dialektisches Vergnügen mit himmlischen Aussichten.

    Description: Transkulturalität zählt zu einem der relevantesten Paradigmen in den Kulturwissenschaften, wenn es um die Beschreibung der Begegnung und des Miteinanders von Kulturen geht. Wenngleich das Paradigma als Theorie in verschiedenen Disziplinen und Diskursen zirkuliert, hat es hinsichtlich seiner Anwendung in der Praxis bislang noch keine umfassende Beachtung erfahren. Anhand einer fundierten praxeologischen Analyse der documenta 12 zeigt Barbara Lutz, wie Transkulturalität für das Kuratieren von Ausstellungen in globalen Zusammenhängen produktiv gemacht werden kann. Sie weist damit den Weg für Museen und andere Ausstellungsinstitutionen, die sich Prozessen der Dekolonialisierung stellen.

Aus biologischer Sicht trifft diese Vorstellung jedoch längst nicht mehr zu. Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht daher die Frage, warum und wie das essentialistische Denken die gesellschaftliche Wahrnehmung biologischer Forschungsprojekte immer noch beeinflusst. Anhand aktueller Erkenntnisse der Genetik und Epigenetik geht Kirsten Schmidt auf die Suche nach einer neuen Interpretation des Genbegriffs im Zeitalter der Postgenomik. Das Verständnis von Genen als dynamischen Prozessen erweist sich dabei als eine fruchtbare Alternative zum Essentialismus.

    Description: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

    Description: Nicht erst nach der vielzitierten »Zeitenwende« können das Bedürfnis nach militärischer Sicherheit und die Idee der Universität in Widerstreit geraten: Ein Beispiel stellt die Helmut-Schmidt-Universität in Hamburg dar, der als Universität der Bundeswehr die Einrichtung eines militärischen Sicherheitsbereichs samt grundsätzlichem Betretungsverbot und der Androhung von Schusswaffengebrauch droht. Gegen dieses Vorhaben hat sich fächer- und statusgruppenübergreifend Widerstand formiert, denn es geht bei der Verteidigung der Freiheit auch um die Verteidigung der Universität. Die Beiträger*innen verorten den Konflikt theoretisch - und geben so einen Einblick in aktuelle Gefahren für die demokratische Bildungskultur.
