Description: COVID wrought havoc on the world’s economic systems. Higher education did not escape the ravages brought on by the pandemic as institutions of higher education around the world faced major upheavals in their educational delivery systems. Some institutions were prepared for the required transition to online learning. Most were not. Whether prepared or not, educators rose to the challenge. The innovativeness of educators met the challenges as digital learning replaced the face-to-face environment. In fact, some of the distance models proved so engaging that many students no longer desire a return to the face-to-face model. As with all transitions, some things were lost while others were gained. This book examines practice in the field as institutions struggled to face the worst global pandemic in the last century. The book is organized into four sections on “The Perspectives of Higher Education”, “COVID as a Catalyst for Change”, “Embracing Online Learning as a Response to COVID”, and “Post Covid: The Way Forward”. It presents various perspectives from educators around the world to illustrate the struggles and triumphs of those facing new challenges and implementing new ideas to empower the educational process. These discussions shed light on the impact of the pandemic and the future of higher education post-COVID. Higher education has been forever changed, and higher education as it once was may never return. While many questions arise, the achievements in meeting and overcoming the pandemic illustrate the creativity and innovativeness of educators around the world who inspired future generations of learners to reach new heights of accomplishment even in the face of the pandemic.

Description: Acute appendicitis is considered to be the most common surgical emergency, with a lifetime risk of 7%. Appendicitis - Causes and Treatments is a comprehensive collection of works by experts who possess practical experience in the management of appendicitis. This publication is particularly relevant given that, during the Covid-19 pandemic, controversy over the management of appendicitis was highlighted. The book addresses the epidemiology and etiology of appendicitis, laparoscopic versus open appendicectomy, appendicitis in childhood, neglected appendicitis and perioperative nursing care. Furthermore, it discusses the evaluation and indications for surgical or non-surgical management (antibiotherapy) or both. Patient selection is a critical determinant of non-operative management, given the shortcomings of this approach, which requires active close observation to detect any deterioration indicating the need for an appendicectomy.

Description: In the mid-19th century, the scientific community was convinced that physics had been fully discovered and only isolated, peripheral issues remained unexplained. One of these was black body radiation (CDC) and the transformation of electromagnetic waves. In 1893, Wien proved that the wavelength at which CDC radiates the greatest amount of energy is inversely proportional to body temperature. Surprisingly, the formula resulting from current, reliable physics describes CDC radiation very well only at low frequencies. For ultraviolet frequencies, the obtained function was constantly upwards. Planck proposed the distribution of the CDC radiation spectrum, assuming that the radiation can only be emitted in precisely defined portions known as quanta. This was the year of the creation of quantum physics, one of the foundations of modern physics. Aristotle recognized that there is a distinctive frame of reference. This view was challenged by Galileo, who concluded that the speed and position of the body are relative. The Galilean transformation became the foundation of Newtonian physics. However, Maxwell’s equations describing electromagnetic waves were not subject to the Galilean transformation but rather to the Lorentz transformation. The biggest problem at the beginning of the 20th century was the incompatibility of the laws of dynamics and electromagnetism. The theory of relativity is another foundation of modern physics. The last year of the 19th century debunked the myth of full understanding of the laws of nature. It quickly turned out that the knowledge about the universe at that time was very little. This lack of knowledge led to a rapid reconstruction of physics in the first half of the 20th century. is book discusses some of these subjects, including spinor fields, 5D relativity, dissipative quantum system and energy balance, centrifugal acceleration in relativistic astrophysics, and time-dependent photoluminescence.

Description: Crohn’s disease (CD) is a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the intestine and can lead to stricture, fistula, and abscess if left untreated. This book highlights the key aspects of the current state of the art of pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy for CD and its unique complications. CD has evolved from clinical observations to a network of advanced therapies and quality of care. Among the pathogenetic factors, a significant proportion of the latest research is focused on the gut microbiome, as rapidly changing environmental factors exert their effects primarily by altering the microbiome. This book highlights the enigmatic crosstalk between the gut microbiome and CD. Going further, CD is a great mimicker that is important to differentiate from other diseases, especially intestinal tuberculosis, which is still a significant problem in tuberculosis-endemic countries. This book addresses this issue as well. Among the diagnostic modalities, capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive, radiation-free, and accurate modality for pan-enteric evaluation. The book examines the role of capsule endoscopy in suspected and established CD, including its pros and cons in these scenarios. It also highlights technical advancements in the field. Among the complications of CD, the most dreaded is fistula. Apart from traditional medical and surgical therapies, interventional inflammatory bowel disease (IIBD) therapies like endoscopic fistulotomy and abscess drainage can decrease surgical morbidity and improve patient outcomes. The book reviews the current role and details of such therapies. Overall, this book provides insights into current advances in CD pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.

Description: Marine ecosystems are very productive and include the open ocean, the deep-sea ocean, and coastal marine ecosystems, each of which has different physical and biological characteristics. The biodiversity of some of these ecosystems is very rich and abundant, offering unique opportunities for high-yield production of proteinaceous material, which is a source of high-quality foods. Biodiversity is fundamental to sustaining marine ecosystem services, such as food security, maintenance of water quality, and recovery from perturbations, which are currently being threatened worldwide. The main threats to marine biodiversity are habitat loss, eutrophication, overexploitation, pollution by hazardous substances, introduction of non-native species, and other human activities. Efforts to reduce these pressures are essential for coastal water quality, recovery of ecosystem services, global food security, and ecosystem stability. Bioindicators are important tools to be used as early warning signals to detect the presence of natural and chemical stressors when monitoring and managing ecosystems and thus promoting ecosystem health. The protection of biodiversity is a major target of the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive, requiring an assessment of the status of biodiversity on the level of species, habitats, and ecosystems, including genetic diversity and the role of biodiversity in food web structure and functioning. The restoration of marine ecosystems can support the productivity and reliability of goods and services that the ocean provides to humankind to maintain ecosystem integrity and stability. Some of the goods produced by the marine ecosystem services are fish harvests, wild plant and animal resources, water, and services that provide recreation, tourism, breeding and nursery habitats, water transport, carbon sequestration, erosion control, and habitat provision. This book comprises six chapters that discuss the ecological, economic, and social roles of a variety of organisms, from primary producers to consumers, relating these roles with water quality and conservation of estuarine and marine ecosystems and thus the contribution to human health.

Description: Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract and one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. The bladder microbiota is strongly associated with different statuses of bladder cancer. The increased abundance of microbes such as Schistosoma, Pseudomonas, Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, Bacteroidetes, and Klebsiella is associated with the development of bladder cancer during tumorigenesis. Improved understanding of age-related alterations to the immune system and gut and urinary microbiomes could provide possible insights into bladder cancer development and progression in the elderly. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content has been shown to be associated with cancer susceptibility. Patients diagnosed with bladder cancer have significantly decreased mtDNA. Cancer prevention strategies are theoretically appealing although often difficult to implement, owing to the multifactorial pathogenesis of most cancers. This book focuses on the diagnosis and prevention of bladder cancer.

Description: By focusing on “new materiality,” this edited volume offers new optics on the affordance of women’s physical and objective body. The interdisciplinary essays assembled in the book interrogate the concepts of corporeality and embodiment by interpreting them as material enactivism of a woman’s physical body geared toward performance and demonstration, respectively. The book situates body/bodily movements as agentic initiatives to make sense of women’s bodies (in) motion. Although flesh in its constitution, a woman’s body is the very material entity that does not only perform what it is expected to do (for its many audiences as in spectacle) but also its corporeality imputes a demonstrative kinetics hitherto associated with the objective body in recent social theorizing.

Description: This book is a comprehensive text on cardiorespiratory health. Although the strong association between physical inactivity and disease is well documented, cardiorespiratory disease is increasing worldwide in all age groups and is a greater risk factor in children. Epidemiologic studies have shown an inverse association between cardiorespiratory fitness and coronary heart disease or all-cause mortality in healthy participants. Recent guidelines for the treatment of overweight and obesity include recommendations for risk stratification according to disease conditions and cardiovascular disease risk factors, but the role of physical inactivity is not evident in these recommendations. Cardiorespiratory endurance is the level at which your heart, lungs, and muscles work together when you exercise for long periods. This shows how efficiently your cardiorespiratory system is working and is an indicator of how physically fit and healthy you are. Cardiorespiratory fitness is a major cause of morbidity among athletes of all levels and its prevalence is increasing. Physical fitness is defined as the ability to perform activities of daily living without fatigue, to participate in and enjoy recreational activities, and to have the energy to cope with unexpected situations. Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the health-related components of physical fitness and is defined as the ability of the heart, lung, and vascular system to deliver oxygen and nutrients to working muscles. Exercisers can improve cardiorespiratory endurance by participating in a regular aerobic exercise program. Improved cardiorespiratory fitness provides many health benefits. Physical inactivity and low cardiovascular fitness are important cardiovascular, metabolic, and mortality risk factors. Studies show the importance of physical activity for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. This book contains nine chapters that provide up-to-date information on cardiorespiratory fitness.

Description: Human history is filled with inventions and other innovations that resulted in a significant and lasting change in our civilization’s course of development. From gasoline-powered vehicles to transistor-based electronics or jet airplanes, things we now take for granted often appeared suddenly and unexpectedly. Yet after their introduction, our world changed forever. Over the past two decades, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been stealthily increasing their presence in our everyday lives. This “randomly systematic” adoption process is exposing humanity to something we never previously directly faced: an intelligence that may (and likely will) exceed our own. Despite this, most people are not fully aware of current (and future) benefits, limitations, and threats related to AI/ML. Within health care, there is little awareness of what AI/ML is capable of and how these new capabilities are being implemented or utilized. It is this current state that serves as our “starting point” in the emerging debate on AI/ML in medicine and surgery, including its integration, projected influence, and many other considerations that are not that different from other past technology adoption paradigms. This book discusses both current trends and future developments in AI and ML across health care.

Description: Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic bone loss disease exemplified by the deterioration of bone tissues and low bone mineral density (BMD), subsequently leading to an enhanced risk of developing fragility-related fractures. It’s a chronic inflammatory condition and is the 4th most burdensome chronic disease after ischemic heart disease, dementia, and lung cancer, with a huge economic burden on the world economy. This skeletal disorder affects predominantly women compared to men, and the risk increases with age. Although currently available therapies to treat osteoporosis are effective, side effects (real and perceived) are impediments to treatment adherence by the patients. Thus, there is an exigent need for renewed interest in managing osteoporosis with a better understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment regime so that safer and more effective management and treatment modalities can be developed. Research in the last decade has led to enormous interest in the pathophysiology of osteoporosis. Importantly, the immune system is now an established player in the development of osteoporosis (Immunoporosis). Also, various off-the-track management and treatment approaches (probiotics, Synbiotics, FMT, etc.) are now being considered for managing osteoporosis. The present edited book will compile the latest trends and knowledge in the field, thereby creating a novel knowledge database for effective and efficient management and therapy of osteoporosis.

Description: This book reviews the training and practice of teachers from several perspectives. The scientific quality and pedagogical richness of the contributions within make this book indispensable for training and enriching teaching professionalism and is useful for teachers in service as well. The interdisciplinarity that increasingly characterizes the educational and training environment clearly emerges, offering the reader a more articulated and less monotheistic vision. This vision, which at first might be more difficult to interpret and less functional to the educational impact of the text, instead offers the opportunity to build a new interpretative key of the complex educational–didactic and educational–professional phenomenon. Trying to govern a phenomenon rich in variables is a fundamental error; to operate with awareness and conscience, the best way is to go through the complexity of the phenomena and reading this book is, in our opinion, the best cultural weapon.

Description: Hemodialysis (HD) is the commonest form of kidney replacement therapy worldwide with a prevalence rate close to 90%. Despite significant improvements in HD techniques and related devices and solutions, the cardiovascular and all-cause mortality of HD patients remains unacceptably elevated. More recently, there have been significant improvements in the creation and maintenance of vascular access as well as the knowledge of types, classification, and monitoring of uremic toxins and their relationship with inflammation, atherosclerosis and vascular classification, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. More interesting is the innovation in dialysis membranes/dialyzers, which resulted in the creation of the medium cut-off membrane, which enables the safe, simple, and effective removal of middle- and large-sized uremic toxins. This type of HD treatment is called expanded hemodialysis (HDx) therapy, which so far has resulted in significant improvement in the quality of life of HD patients as well as reductions in hospitalization, medications, and non-fatal cardiovascular events. Updates on Hemodialysis discusses these innovations and how they can be used to improve daily practice and achieve the best possible medical outcomes in HD patients.

Description: The nervous system is an essential component of the human body and is divided into two main systems: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS is composed of the brain and the spinal cord and acts as the command center of the organism. The PNS is a network of nerves that extends from the spinal cord throughout the body and regulates both voluntary and involuntary movements, such as digestion, heart rate, breathing, and body temperature. Within the PNS, there are two subdivisions: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic system controls voluntary movements, while the autonomic system operates automatically and regulates essential involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion. It is further divided into two branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, which work together to maintain homeostasis. Alterations in the autonomic nervous system can lead to various diseases, as these two branches play a crucial role in regulating the organs and systems of the body. For example, an imbalance in the sympathetic system can result in excessive heart rate and blood pressure, while a dysfunction in the parasympathetic system can lead to digestive problems. Therefore, understanding its divisions and functions is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by autonomic nervous system dysfunction. This book provides a comprehensive overview of this system and its functions.
