    Description: Este libro resulta de una inquietud compartida por once colegas activos en ocho países, a ambos lados del Atlántico:mostrar la interconexión múltiple de diversos tópicos de la relación América Latina – el Caribe – Europa en una obra editorial de divulgación internacional.El comercio, la ciencia y la técnica posibilitan esta interconexión. De hecho, este conjunto de artículos atinge lo que Horst Pietschmann designacomo «un amplio proyecto, subdividido en distintos proyectos parciales» cuando analiza la historia atlántica. Entre las fuentes que respaldan la amplia temática presentada aparecen analizados documentos de archivo, epistolarios, hemerografía y bibliografía junto a memorias, pinturas, fotografías, genealogías, obras civiles, postales y lápidas de cementerios. El legado de artistas, científicos, comerciantes, diplomáticos, historiadores, viajeros y familias, ha posibilitado esta compilación que, remontando desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta comienzos del siglo XX, ofrece aquí, en simultáneo, tanto la conceptualización del mundo atlántico, la visión civilizadora del desarrollo social y de los efectos económicos de la emancipación americana, como la visión artística de la Ilustración sobre la exótica producción tropical, la dilatada representación del paisaje latinoamericano y los intereses de la expansión europea exhibidos en exposiciones universales. Además, este legado facilitó una relectura de los proyectos globales y agendas personales, familiares y políticas, existentes detrás de expediciones, estudios científicos y empresas mercantiles que fomentaron la transferencia de conocimientos y técnicas, el turismo, la diplomacia y los negocios entre América Latina, el Caribe y Europa.     El tabaco y la esclavitud en la rearticulación imperial ibérica (s. xv-xx) (2021)

    Description: Este libro es un ejercicio de historia comparada, teniendo como sujeto y objeto de nuestro relato España y Portugal, desde dos marcos cronológicos diferentes. El período en que se articula una relaidad imperial durante el Antiguo Régimen y la del cambio hacia políticas nacionales imperiales. En este largo recogido histórico jugaron un papel relevante, tanto el tabaco, como le tráfico de esclavos. Entre 1580-1640 podemos referirnos a un solo Atlántico ibérico, en los aspectos defensivos y económicos y de modo especial en el tráfico de esclavos. Los dos monopolios ibéricos del tabaco se construyeron de manera distinta. La distinción institucional entre ambos Imperios se mantuvo durante la Unión Ibérica y la Restaracíon articuló un sistema atlántico del tabaco con muchas diferencias a partir de 1640. De la parte española se intentó crear un estanco imperial hispánico que culminó en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, muy ligado a las necesidades militares de defensa de las Indias. El monopolio portugués, cuya creación es paralela a la del estanco español, estuvo siempre restringido al territorio peninsular y a los archipiélagos del Atlántico medio, estando casi toda su historia en manos de arrendadores a diferencia de lo que pasó en España. Este sistema aproxima el estanco portugués al francés, en el que el tabaco entró en el contrato general de los arrendadores en 1730. No hubo pues un estanco Imperial, aunque si podemos referirnos a un sistema atlántico del tabaco lusitano. Desde Bahia se abrió un camino nuevo, al margen del mercado europeo, al integrarse el tabaco como mercancía de ida directa (sin pasar por Lisboa) en el comercio de esclavos (Tabaco por esclavos). Esta obra se acerca las principales claves planteadas en los debates parlamentarios de las Cortes de Cádiz y del Trienio Liberal en torno a la possible incompatibilidad entre libertad, propriedad y estanco del tabaco, e igualmente al debate político sobre la esclavitud. En los comienzos del reinado de Isabel II se llegó al consenso de la continuidad de la esclavitud en ultramar, con la prohibición de la trata, para conformar una política pública que, bajo el mandato progresista, se consolidó como una cuestión de estado, orientada a garantizar la dependencia colonial de Cuba, Puerto Rico y Filipinas

    Description: With the exception of Canada’s relationship with the United States, Canada’s relationship with China will likely be its most significant foreign connection in the twenty-first century. As China’s role in world politics becomes more central, understanding China becomes essential for Canadian policymakers and policy analysts in a variety of areas. Responding to this need, The China Challenge brings together perspectives from both Chinese and Canadian experts on the evolving Sino-Canadian relationship. It traces the history and looks into the future of Canada-China bilateral relations. It also examines how China has affected a number of Canadian foreign and domestic policy issues, including education, economics, immigration, labour and language. Recently, Canada-China relations have suffered from inadequate policymaking and misunderstandings on the part of both governments.     Description: Has any question about the historical past ever been finally answered? Of course there is much disagreement among professional historians about what happened in the past and how to explain it. But this incisive study goes one step further and brings into question the very ability of historians to gather and communicate genuine knowledge about the past. Understanding History applies this general question from the philosophy of history to economic history of American slaveholders. Do we understand the American slaveholders? Has the last word on the subject been said? Both the alleged “profitability” of slavery and the purported causes of the American Civil War are philosophically analyzed. Traditional narrative history and econometric history are examined and compared, and their different philosophical assumptions made explicit. The problem of justifying historical methodologies is first set in the wider context of the philosophical problem of knowledge, then lucidly explained and resolved along pragmatic lines. The novelty of Gorman’s approach lies in its comparison of narrative with econometric history, its analysis of empathetic understanding in terms of cost-benefit analysis, and its elucidation of the metaphysical presuppositions of empiricism. It stands out especially for the clarity, rigor, and simplicity of its arguments.

    Entangled peripheries. New contributions to the history of Portugal and Morocco : Essays in homage to Eva Maria von Kemnitz (2021)

    Description: The main aim of this volume is to explore the continuity of Portuguese-Moroccan relations before and, especially, after the classic period of the 11th-16th centuries. Its title, “Entangled peripheries”, is a conceptual attempt to account for the contradiction between the resilience of bilateral contacts and exchanges and its decreasing relevance for both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. Although most chapters focus on topics of the 18th-20th centuries, the contributions dealing with the medieval and early modern periods provide a long durée perspective typical of “entangled history”. Other distinctive elements of this historiographical current are also present, such as the circulations and networks of people and objects and the supranational and regional actors and processes, which help situate Portugal and Morocco as “peripheries”. The volume is divided in three sections: “Marginal circulations”, “Facts, histories, fictions” and “Beyond nationalism and colonialism”. The first one presents case-studies of displacements of ethnically or socially marginal groups between Morocco and Portugal between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The last section’s examines how regional, imperial and global processes far outweighed bilateral relations across the Strait of Gibraltar both before and after the classic period of the 11th-16th centuries. Finally, the middle section of this volume engages with the “entangled peripheries” approach not literally as the other two but in a meta-sense, by focusing on historical sources, historiography and historical fiction.
