    Description: This edited volume explores a variety of aspects of associative governance, providing detailed case studies of associations and associational governance in Scandinavia. Theoretically developing a concept and approach of associative governance, the book sheds light on a dynamic way of perceiving associative aspects of community and commercial life that has been hitherto underexplored and undertheorized. It shows how governance by associations may be conducted not only bottom‑up by self‑organized and voluntary participation, but also top‑down by authoritative incorporation through government, and – not least – in multifarious interstices in between.     Description: Religion as a form of cultural expression constitutes a critical element in the relationship between Germany and India. The discovery of Indian traditions in Germany and re-interpretations of those traditions in India fueled not only new theological and philosophical explorations, but also extensive innovations in the fields of music, dance, bodily experience, and political intervention. Seeking to uncover the enfolding of colonial thought structures through presentations of the Self, while placing them in the context of global colonial value chains that connected the peripheries with the centre, this interdisciplinary volume addresses India through the lens of an entangled relationship. Adopting the position that the acceleration of communication, technical development, and colonisation locally triggered re-interpretations of the religious sphere, This volume takes a look at the period from 1800 to the end of National Socialism, tracing the strands of an Indo-Germanic religion in the making as it goes along. A special emphasis is placed on the artistic expressions of religious experience including re-enactments of musical compositions and dance configurations, which were created to embody India in Germany.     Description: This volume investigates a galaxy of diverse networks and intellectual actors who engaged in a broad political environment, from conservatism to the most radical right, between the World Wars. Looking beyond fascism, it considers the less-investigated domain of the 'Latin space', which is both geographical and cultural, encompassing countries of both Southern Europe and Latin America. Focus is given to mid-level civil servants, writers, journalists and artists and important 'transnational agents' as well as the larger intellectual networks to which they belonged. The book poses such questions as: In what way did the intellectuals align national and nationalistic values with the project of creating a 'Republic of Letters' that extended beyond each country’s borders, a 'space' in which one could produce and disseminate thought whose objective was to encourage political action?     Description: The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy. The individual chapters showcase some of the most recent methods and approaches applied to the study of Roman towns, discussing the broader implications of fresh archaeological discoveries from both well known and less widely known sites, from the Po Plain to Southern Italy, from the Republican to the Late Antique period (and beyond).

    Description: This monograph deals with Polish foreign policy shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. In tracing the diplomatic activity of foreign minister Józef Beck, it discusses six general problems: (1) the Polish political situation under the pressure of appeasement; (2) the project of Intermarium and efforts to implement it; (3) the action against Czechoslovakia and the conflict with the Soviet Union; (4) the Polish attitude towards the German concept of Gesamtlosung in Germany’s relations with Poland; (5) the genesis of the Polish alliance with Great Britain; (6) the Allies’ military inaction after Nazi Germany’s aggression. In these conditions, Poland made four key decisions: it stood against Czechoslovakia, it rejected German demands, it allied itself with the United Kingdom, and it rejected the Soviet Union’s claim for the Red Army to march across Polish lands.

    Description: This book examines the increasing body of research dedicated to the lasting differences between the former separate states of the Federal German Republic (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it takes a broad view on German unification and transformation research. Transformation and unification processes in East and West Germany are still ongoing, and they may serve as a model for social change and its political, economic, and psychological consequences. Using advanced statistical methods of analysis, this edited volume provides insights into the valuable contextualization of individual and social phenomena that current research on German unification and transformation is producing. Following the open science mindset using code and data, the authors investigate temporal trends in (1) mental health, (2) political attitudes, and (3) work and family life. It explores changes in mental health and political attitudes, as well as continued differences in work and family arrangements, that may stem from heterogeneous experiences within the systems and during the transformation process.     Description: How can immortality be a curse? According to the Wandering Jew legend, as Jesus made his way to Calvary, a man refused him rest, cruelly taunting him to hurry to meet his fate. In response, Jesus cursed the man to wander until the Second Coming. Since the medieval period, the legend has inspired hundreds of adaptations by artists and writers. Instrument of Memory: Encounters with the Wandering Jew, the first English-language study of the legend in over fifty years, is also the first to examine the influence of the legend’s medieval and early modern sources over the centuries into the present day. Using the lens of memory studies, the work shows how the Christian tradition of the legend centered the memory of the Passion at the heart of the Wandering Jew’s curse. Instrument of Memory also shows how Jewish artists and writers have reimagined the legend through Jewish memory traditions. Through this focus on memory, Jewish adapters of the legend create complex renderings of the Wandering Jew that recognize not only the entanglement of Jewish and Christian memory, but also the impact of that entanglement on Jewish subjects. This book presents a complex, sympathetic, and more fully realized version of the legend while challenging the limits of the presentism of memory studies.

Da Betriebe das soziale und materielle Leben organisierten, prägten sie auch soziale Ungleichheit, obwohl sich die DDR als egalitäre Gesellschaft verstand. Jessica Lindner-Elsner untersucht am Beispiel des VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, das den Wartburg baute, wie sich Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Ungleichheit wandelten. Dies zeigt sie für die Kernbelegschaften und vulnerable Arbeiter:innen wie etwa Strafgefangene, Menschen mit Behinderungen und Ausländer. Sie waren gegenüber Mitarbeiter:innen in Normalarbeitsverhältnissen benachteiligt. Deutlich wird zudem die Ungleichbehandlungen von Frauen, die aufgrund fortbestehender Rollenverteilungen weniger flexibel auf Arbeitsanforderungen regieren konnten. Die Autorin fragt, wie solche Benachteiligungen im planwirtschaftlichen System entstanden. Ebenso zeigt sie, wie sich die Muster sozialer Ungleichheit im Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft veränderten, als das Automobilwerk durch die Treuhandanstalt abgewickelt wurde und mit Opel in Eisenach ein neuer Hersteller übernahm.

Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht. Kennzeichnend für seinen Ansatz sind die ästhetischen Verfahrensweisen, durch die er einen originären Beitrag in der langen Tradition der Auseinandersetzung zwischen wissenschaftlicher und künstlerischer Aneignung von Geschichte leistet. Andre Bartoniczek arbeitet die Signaturen dieser Tradition auf, zeichnet die Entwicklung des Dokumentarfilms nach und liefert als erste umfangreiche Untersuchung Veiels geschichtlicher Filme eine Werkanalyse, die letztlich der Frage nachgeht: Was ist und wie gelingt historische Erinnerung? Dabei kommt auch der Filmemacher selbst zu Wort.

Andreas Becker fokussiert auf die von den zentralen Akteuren verwendeten Vergleichspraktiken und stellt deren Produktivität als zentralen Mechanismus von Herrschaftsorganisation heraus. Dabei fasst er die dort entstehenden Beziehungen weder als einseitig-übermächtigend, noch zeichnet er Schweden als einen »guten Kolonisator«. Stattdessen hebt er die Notwendigkeit von Aushandlung in einer innereuropäischen kolonialen Kontaktzone hervor, die bisher nicht auf diese Art untersucht wurde.

    Description: In the middle of the 9th century, the Abbey of Fulda founded a subsidiary monastery on the Weser, which was likely transformed into a collegiate monastery in the 10th century. In 1259, the abbot of Fulda sold his rights to the Bishop of Minden. After the Reformation, the episcopal rights passed to the Welfish sovereign in 1576. The collegiate monastery underwent a gradual secularization process from 1850 to 1863. The biographies of the personnel of the Boniface monastery attest to the close connections between the foundation and the city. Beyond Hameln, the book provides prosopographical material for the comparative study of medieval collegiate monasteries.

    Description: The lifetime of Johan Huizinga (1872–1945) was marked by dramatic transformations in Europe. Cityscapes, aesthetic codes, social orders, political cultures, international travel and means of warfare developed beyond recognition; entire catalogues of hopes and fears were torn asunder and replaced by new ones during not one but two wars. Amidst all these changes, Huizinga grew to become one of the most famous historians of his time. To this day, his works are treated as monuments in the cultural historical field. This book examines how these transformations and ‘experiences of loss’ affected and informed Huizinga’s historical perspectives. Zugleich nimmt die Studie diejenigen Familien in den Blick, bei denen das Familienmitglied mit Behinderung von zu Hause ausgezogen ist. Welche Beweggründe führen zum Auszug und wie erleben die Familien den Übergang in eine betreute Wohnform? The great Irish writer Samuel Beckett stated that Geulincx, with his emphasis on the powerlessness and ignorance of the human condition, was a key influence on his works. Eliza Orme, despite becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a university degree in Law in 1888, leading both a political organization and a labour investigation in 1892, and participating actively in the women’s suffrage movement into the early twentieth century, is one such figure. Framed as a ‘research memoir’, Eliza Orme’s Ambitions fills out earlier scant accounts of this intriguing life, while speculating about why it has been overlooked. Established historian Leslie Howsam shapes the story around her own persistent curiosity in the context of a transformed research landscape, where important letters and explosive newspaper accounts have only recently come to light. These materials show how Orme’s career ambitions brought her into conflict with the male-dominated legal community of her time, while her political ambitions were cut short by disputes with other women activists whose notions of political strategy she repudiated. In public, Orme was a formidable debater for the causes she supported and against opponents whose strategies—even for women’s suffrage—she repudiated. In private, she was generous, warm, and witty, close to friends, family, and her female partner.     Description: During the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, more Europeans visited the Middle East than ever before, as tourists, archaeologists, pilgrims, settler-colonists and soldiers. These visitors engaged with the Arabic language to differing degrees. While some were serious scholars of Classical Arabic, in the Orientalist mould, many did not learn the language at all. Between these two extremes lies a neglected group of language learners who wanted to learn enough everyday colloquial Arabic to get by. The needs of these learners were met by popular language books, which boasted that they could provide an easy route to fluency in a difficult language. Arabic Dialogues explores the motivations of Arabic learners and effectiveness of instructional materials, principally in Egypt and Palestine, by analysing a corpus of Arabic phrasebooks published in nine languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian) and in the territory of twenty-five modern countries. Beginning with Napoleon’s Expédition d’Égypte (1798–1801), it moves through the periods of mass tourism and European colonialism in the Middle East, concluding with the Second World War. The book also considers how Arab intellectuals understood the project of teaching Arabic to foreigners, the remarkable history of Arabic-learning among Yiddish- and Hebrew-speaking immigrants in Palestine, and the networks of language learners, teachers and plagiarists who produced these phrasebooks.

    Description: Feedback from teachers is of great importance for the learning development of pupils. For optimal support of learning processes, it is important how students perceive and utilise feedback. Based on theoretical supply-utilisation models, this book addresses the question of the extent to which students in upper secondary school perceive feedback from teachers in German lessons differently and how this perception affects students' motivation development. The findings from latent change models provide information on the stability and change in feedback perception over the course of a school term as well as on differences in feedback perception between students. In addition, the longitudinal analyses highlight the interplay between different dimensions of feedback quality and the development of learning motivation. The findings expand the state of research on the perception of feedback and the development of differentiated effects on motivation and also open up a wide range of suggestions for educational practice.

    Description: Collective monograph contains the results of scientific research devoted to some problems of continuous education. The proposed models and methods make it possible to form new views and proposals that can contribute to increasing the efficiency of the educational process. Chapter 1 highlights the results of a pedagogical experiment on the formation of organizational competence among future specialists in physical culture and sports of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The dynamics of the formation of organizational competence is determined and it is shown that the application of the obtained results makes it possible to find out the formation of value-motivational, knowledge, managerial, managerial, control-corrective and reflective-evaluative components of organizational competence of cadets. Chapter 2 focuses on the current problems of adult education in Ukraine and Sweden, which acquire special significance through the prism of the "value rearmament" of a person of the 21st century. The features of trends in adult education at the global and local levels are clarified, and the author's interactive intensive course is offered. Chapter 3 presents the development of innovative models of effectiveness for communication in a foreign language with an emphasis on lifelong learning and multiculturalism. Integration of "inverted classroom" models, models based on tasks of immersion in the concept of technology application for improving language learning is proposed. It is shown that the introduction of technologies in language learning can improve access to resources and increase the effectiveness of education. Chapter 4 is devoted to the management of professional development of professional staff of Ukrainian universities in the context of the expansion of institutional autonomy. The obtained results can be considered as part of the integration processes of higher education of Ukraine in the European educational space In Chapter 5, the means of developing individual and group receptivity to the new are disclosed. It is shown that corporate training through active methods, modern management models and technologies, coaching training technologies acquires special importance. The monograph is intended for educators, theoreticians and practitioners who study the problems of the continuous educational process in order to increase its effectiveness.

    Description: This book explores shared religious practices among Jews, Christians, and Muslims, focusing primarily on the medieval Mediterranean. It examines the meanings members of each community ascribed to the presence of the religious other at ""their"" festivals or holy sites during pilgrimage. Communal boundaries were often redefined or dissolved during pilgrimage and religious festivals. Yet, paradoxically, shared practices served to enforce communal boundaries, since many of the religious elite devised polemical interpretations of these phenomena which highlighted the superiority of their own faith. Such interpretations became integral to each group’s theological understanding of self and other to such a degree that in some regions, religious minorities were required to participate in the festivals of the ruling community. In all formulations, “otherness” remained an essential component of both polemic and prayer.

La población y muestra del estudio, compuesta por estudiantes de práctica del IX y X semestre, añade relevancia a los hallazgos, proporcionando una visión específica del entorno universitario. La investigación utiliza dos técnicas de recolección de datos: encuestas y evaluaciones. Los instrumentos, un cuestionario para la variable de redes sociales y un examen para la variable de ortografía, ofrecen una comprensión integral de la relación entre estas dos dimensiones. El uso del software estadístico SPSS y la prueba de hipótesis mediante el coeficiente de Spearman añaden robustez a los resultados presentados. Los resultados revelan una correlación negativa entre el uso de redes sociales y las habilidades ortográficas, desafiando preconcepciones comunes sobre la influencia positiva de la comunicación digital en la escritura. Sin embargo, el libro va más allá de esta correlación general, explorando las dimensiones específicas de la ortografía y revelando matices en la relación. La prosa clara y accesible facilita la comprensión de los hallazgos, haciendo que la obra sea accesible tanto para académicos como para lectores interesados en la evolución de la comunicación en la era digital. Además, la obra invita a la reflexión sobre cómo equilibrar la participación en redes sociales con el mantenimiento de las habilidades lingüísticas esenciales. Vor allem Emma Budge trug zudem eine umfangreiche und hochkarätige Sammlung angewandter Kunst zusammen, die nach ihrem Tod in den Besitz der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg übergehen sollte. Doch dazu kam es nicht: Nach ihrem Tod musste die Sammlung von den Erben versteigert werden, und im Palais am Alsterufer richtete sich der nationalsozialistische »Reichsstatthalter« ein. Das philanthropische Lebenswerk war damit unwiederbringlich zerstört. Mit dieser ersten umfassenden Biographie aus der Feder Karen Michels` über das außergewöhnliche Ehepaar Budge wird es verdient gewürdigt. Emma (1852-1937) und Henry (1840-1928) Budge Jahrzehntelang lebten die Budges in New York, wo der aus Frankfurt stammende Henry Budge als erfolgreicher Banker und Eisenbahnfinanzier ein enormes Vermögen machte. 1903 kehrte er mit seiner Frau Emma nach Deutschland zurück und ließ sich in Hamburg nieder, der Heimat seiner Gattin."

    Description: Rosa Schapire - emanzipierte Frau, leidenschaftliche Förderin expressionistischer Kunst, entwurzelt im Londoner Exil, aber Kämpferin bis zum Schluss. »Hätte ich im Mittelalter gelebt, ich wäre wohl eine Nonne oder Heilige geworden«, schrieb Rosa Schapire kurz vor ihrem Tod 1954. Um die Jahrhundertwende hatte sie sich gegen traditionelle Rollenbilder und für ein Leben als Intellektuelle entschieden. Als eine der ersten Frauen wurde sie im Fach Kunstgeschichte in Heidelberg promoviert, zog 1905 nach Hamburg und begeisterte sich dort für den gerade aufkommenden Expressionismus – besonders für die Künstlergruppe »Brücke« und Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, den sie später als Mäzenin unterstützte. Ihr Einsatz für die neue Kunstrichtung, die von den Nationalsozialisten als »entartet« verfemt wurde, machte sie – zumal als Jüdin – den Machthabern verdächtig. Der antisemitischen Verfolgung entging sie nur aufgrund ihrer Flucht nach London 1939. Während der Kriegsjahre baute sich Rosa Schapire dort eine neue, allerdings zeitlebens prekäre Existenz u. a. als Übersetzerin auf. Ihre Briefe aus den letzten Lebensjahren an Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, die hier erstmals umfänglich ausgewertet werden, zeigen eine exilierte Frau, die trotz Sorgen und Todessehnsucht, doch immer die Kraft fand, sich für die expressionistische Kunst einzusetzen.

Based on the conceptual and methodological tools of the transnational turn and on archives, fully exploited for the first time by the research team, this book enriches knowledge of the phenomena of globalization. It does so in a field, education, which is currently one of those most invested in globalization, but whose sociogenesis in the era of its first period of institutionalization remains to be explored more profoundly.     Description: La educación básica regular se encuentra en una encrucijada de retos y problemas que van más allá de límites y disciplinas. Este libro, titulado Carolinos en Acción, se presenta como resultado de la aplicación de una estrategia didáctica y metodológica que brinda y propone una transformación en las prácticas pedagógicas a partir de la investigación escolar como herramienta pedagógica, que busca el desarrollo de un pensamiento crítico en los estudiantes carolinos, también fortalece las competencias científicas y la formación de un ciudadano de bien. La investigación escolar tiene gran trascendencia y existen precedentes de su amplio recorrido. Sin embargo, parece ser relegado, mal interpretada o no ser considerada adecuadamente en el marco de la práctica docente en la educación básica, y se limita a trasladar la tarea a escenarios futuros del estudiante como el nivel universitario o de educación superior donde es llevada a cabo por expertos en temas específicos. Lo contrario invitaría a la desmitificación de ciertos paradigmas de la investigación escolar, en los que se brinde apoyo al estudiante como agente de generación de conocimiento, se aleje al estudiante de la formación principalmente in situ, se dinamice la formación en investigación a través de la práctica, y se permite al docente reflexionar y cuestionar la información revisada, y aprender a problematizar los elementos que están en su entorno. La IEI Glorioso San Carlos busca facilitar espacios de encuentro y debate de opiniones entre docentes y estudiantes como fuente de investigación, privilegiando la iniciativa y la creatividad del estudiante y su lugar expectante entre la enseñanza y la investigación, considerando como objetivo de la investigación el hacer y producir. Cada uno de los ensayos de este resumen aborda un tema que fue elegido libremente por cada participante quienes fueron fortalecidos en la competencia escribe diversos tipos de textos y en el uso de herramientas de investigación como: uso adecuado del Word, uso del aplicativo Mendeley, búsqueda de información (bases de datos), citas y referencias en APA7, entre otros. Para la concreción de la presente publicación se implementó el proyecto de innovación “Aprendo a investigar desde mi colegio” aprobado mediante RD N° 242-2023-DREP-UGELP-DGCNSC, dirigido principalmente a estudiantes del tercer, cuarto y quinto grado de educación secundaria, considerando la investigación en la escuela como un reto para la comunidad educativa, de cara al bicentenario y como parte del Eje 3 Investigación e Innovación del Plan Bicentenario de la Institución Educativa Integrada Glorioso Colegio Nacional de San Carlos – Puno, que será un hito en el panorama educativo de la comunidad educativa que responda a la visión de la IEI. Se espera que este resumen no solo alimente la discusión académica, sino que también fomente la acción necesaria para abordar los desafíos importantes que marcarán el futuro de la educación básica y posicione a la IEI Glorioso Colegio Nacional San Carlos como promotor de la investigación escolar.

Luetkens travelled France between 1743-1745 in order to become a successful wholesale merchant. He succeeded in this undertaking via both shrewd business practice and proficient skills in the practice of letter writing. Based on this unique discovery, in this microhistorical study Lucas Haasis examines the crucial steps and activities of a mercantile establishment phase, the typical letter practices of Early Modern merchants, and the practical principles of persuasion leading to success in the 18th century.

By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.

    Description: How did nobility try to live up to its exalted social position? With this volume, the Institut für niederrheinische Kulturgeschichte und Regionalentwicklung (InKuR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in cooperation with Gerd Dethlefs, has focused on the culture of nobility in the Lower Rhine-Westphalian region. The focus lies on the methods of conflict resolution within this social class in the Middle Ages and early modern period, from duels to court proceedings. Furthermore, an exhibition at the Ruhr Museum on the nobility in the Ruhr region, which was on display in the city of Essen in 2021/22, is presented. Other contributions are dealing with the Christian missionization of the Lower Rhine region and the siege of the city of Moers by Royal Spanish troops during the Eighty Years' War. A fundamental account of the relationship between the Dutch and German languages rounds off the volume.

It addresses several key areas, including: articulating the contemporary need for research thinking across teacher education; showcasing diverse yet conceptually connected strategies that all use the Research Skill Development (RSD) framework; providing an explicit scaffolded approach; and extending knowledge of the 'Models of Engaged Learning and Teaching' (MELT) conceptual framework. This book also addresses the contemporary topics of social media for learning, digital literacy, education research as cultural work and formations of communities of practice, with cross-cutting themes of scaffolded development and formative assessment of research skills. It highlights how research thinking is not only vital for PST (Preservice Teachers), I-ST (In-Serivce Teachers) and university educators, but also models for them how to scaffold the research thinking of their own students. This book's use of the RSD, as a shared conceptual framework across the chapters, emphasises the overlaps between ways of thinking in the different learning areas in which education occurs, without masking the differences. Likewise, the interdisciplinary work that comprises Education is informed by the RSD conceptual framework as used in a variety of disciplines. Together, this use of RSD brings a strong sense of connectedness between PST, I-ST and university educators. This is an open access book.

    Description: Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practiced by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Nor are these practices static, as those involved exploit opportunities to adapt old features and develop new ones. The act of writing then has tangible and visible consequences not only for the writers but also for those encountering what has been produced, whether they can read its content or not – with potential for a wider social visibility that can in turn affect the success and longevity of the writing system itself. With a focus on the syllabic systems of the Bronze Age Aegean, this book attempts to bring together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing: from structuralist views of writing as systems of signs with their linguistic values, to archaeological and anthropological approaches to writing as a socially grounded practice. The main chapters focus on the concepts of script adoption and adaptation; different methods of logographic writing; and the vitality of writing traditions, with repercussions for the modern world. Der Sachunterricht stellt aufgrund seines umfassenden Bildungsauftrags ein herausforderndes Betätigungsfeld für Lehrkräfte dar. Das audiovisuelle Medienformat Erklärvideo kommt dabei zunehmend zur Anwendung. Anhand einer explorativen qualitativ-empirischen Studie mit österreichischen und deutschen Grundschullehrkräften wird ein Rahmenmodell zum Erklärvideoeinsatz im Sachunterricht entwickelt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sowohl die Schulschließungen im Zuge der Coronapandemie als auch der individuelle Umgang mit dem Bildungsauftrag des Sachunterrichts Motive für den Einsatz von Erklärvideos darstellen. Es werden Vorgehensweisen bei der Auswahl bzw. Gestaltung von Erklärvideos sowie didaktische Zielsetzungen und situationsspezifische Umgangsformen mit dem Medium identifiziert. Einflussfaktoren für die Nutzung von Erklärvideos sind die Verfügbarkeit passender Angebote, die technische Ausstattung sowie personenbezogene Faktoren wie persönliches Interesse und Medienkompetenz. Qualitätsvolle Erklärvideos im Sachunterricht können bei zweckmäßigem Einsatz als geeignete Bildungsressourcen für die Lernenden und als didaktisches Werkzeug für die Lehrenden betrachtet werden.

    Description: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

Einen Leitfaden der »alternative« bildete die fortlaufende Reflexion darüber, wie mit intellektuellen Mitteln gesellschaftliche Wirkung zu erzeugen sei - bis im linken Krisenjahrzehnt der 1970er Jahre vermehrt das Scheitern an diesem Anspruch zum Thema der Zeitschrift wurde. Moritz Neuffer rekonstruiert die Kollektivbiografie der Redakteurinnen, Autoren und Leserinnen und fragt, was das Publizieren in der »journalistischen Form« der Zeitschrift von anderen Formen des Denkens und Schreibens unterscheidet.

Methodological studies on the development of all types of speech activity of foreign students using multimedia technologies, modern social network content are presented. The role of social networks in the lives of students and their impact on the pedagogical process was studied, various aspects of students' interaction with social networks were clarified. The essence, features and functional role of communication in modern society in the context of the development of inclusion, inclusive society and environment, intercultural communication and multiculturalism are studied. In order to improve the quality of the formation of professional competence among Chinese students during their studies at Ukrainian higher education institutions, the influence of the native language and the peculiarities of the linguistic picture of the world was investigated. Manejar, dominar y sobrellevar nuestras habilidades interpersonales nos ayudan a tener una comunicación más beneficiosa con los demás, a expresar mejor lo que necesitamos decir y a entender lo que se nos quiere comunicar;, por lo tanto, a relacionarnos mejor y efectivamente con otro ser humano; es decir, con otro profesional, autoridad, compañero de trabajo y hasta amigo y familiar. Las habilidades interpersonales forman un conjunto de comportamientos y hábitos necesarios para garantizar una adecuada interacción, mejorar las relaciones personales y alcanzar los objetivos de la comunicación; es decir, transmitir o recibir correctamente un mensaje, una información o una orden; son útiles para construir equipos de trabajo eficientes y mejorar las bases de la comunicación interna. Por otro lado, saberse desenvolver en estas habilidades interpersonales, sobre todo en el plano de la educación superior posibilita enormemente el trabajo de aprendizaje por el efecto de bienestar en el desarrollo de su actividad, de su quehacer diario. En ese entender, nos permite establecer vínculos y relaciones estables y efectivas con las personas; es así que su desarrollo implica la capacidad de reconocer nuestras emociones y las de los demás, así como la posibilidad de saber regularlas en las relaciones con los otros. Para los fines señalados, este texto permitirá conocer, de manera muy práctica, a través de la propuesta de sesiones de aprendizaje y marco teórico respectivo, cómo trabajar, aporta, desarrollar habilidades interpersonales en la comunidad educativa universitaria.

The Kremlin’s militarization of Russia through World War II propaganda is well documented, but the glorification of Russian medieval society and its warlords as a source of support for Putinism has yet to be explored. This book offers the first comparison of Putin’s political neomedievalism and re-Stalinization and introduces the concept of mobmemory to the study of right-wing populism. It argues that the celebration of the oprichnina, Ivan the Terrible’s regime of state terror (1565–1572), has been fused with the rehabilitation of Stalinism to reconstruct the Russian Empire. The post-Soviet case suggests that the global obsession with the Middle Ages is not purely an aesthetic movement but a potential weapon against democracy. The book also reports on levels of these competencies of over 45,000 adolescents, from a household-based assessment conducted in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The results describe how these adolescents vary in proficiency by region, age, and other factors, providing a resource for national education ministries to factor into policy decisions. Given the technical requirements of measuring individuals’ social-emotional and related competencies, how is it possible to capture an adolescent’s life skills across varied contexts?     Description: Das Leben Helmuth Plessners - Zeugnis einer Geistesgeschichte zwischen Exil und Remigration. Helmuth Plessner ist einer der interessantesten deutschen Intellektuellen des 20. Jahrhunderts. In der Weimarer Republik wies der Mitbegründer der philosophischen Anthropologie radikale Ideologien zurück. Als »Halbjude« 1933 von der Universität Köln entlassen, emigrierte er in die Niederlande und lehrte an der Universität Groningen, bis er 1943 von der deutschen Besatzungsmacht erneut relegiert wurde. Die letzten Kriegsjahre überlebte er im Untergrund. Nach dem Krieg erhielt er seine Groninger Professur zurück und nahm 1951 einen Ruf nach Göttingen an. Plessner wirkte entscheidend am Wiederaufbau der Philosophie an den deutschen Universitäten nach 1945 mit und gehört zu den Gründungsvätern der bundesdeutschen Soziologie. Bekannt wurde er vor allem mit seiner im Exil entstandenen Deutschlandstudie »Die verspätete Nation«. Carola Dietze legt die erste Biographie Helmuth Plessners vor, die auf Archivquellen basiert. Sie führt in Plessners Philosophie ein und analysiert, welchen Einfluß die Erfahrung der Emigration auf sein Denken hatte. Exemplarisch werden der Verlauf eines Wissenschaftsexils in den Niederlanden, die Gründe für eine Rückkehr nach Deutschland und die Situation eines Remigranten in der Bundesrepublik der fünfziger Jahre untersucht.

    Description: The monograph reflects and scientifically and methodologically substantiates ways to solve urgent problems of the theory and practice of training officers of the National Police in terms of the quality of higher education in the context of the imperative of human-dimensional meanings, taking into account studies of Ukrainian psychological, pedagogical, legal comparative studies. In the most general form, the material is presented regarding the strategic guidelines for the quality of education in the WHE with special learning conditions in the context of Ukraine's integration into the European educational space. Philosophical and methodological approaches to solving existing disagreements in the field of human measurement of the quality of police education in Ukraine and abroad are studied in integral connection with the corresponding concepts of human development; leadership theories; the genesis of personnel work on professional training and evaluation of the activities of police officers in the system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Features of the human-measurement training of officers of the National Police of Ukraine are explained on the basis of the provisions of the modern post-non-classical methodology of science, a general scientific holistic approach, humanistic pedagogy, as well as the methodological foundations for the implementation of international standards of ethical behavior in the activities of police officers, which is an objective need of the current Ukrainian education system in general and in particular, a prerequisite for the prevention of corruption offenses, the vitality of virtue in society. The productivity of reflexive practices of self-organization of the personality of future police officers is substantiated as a condition for the development of psychological resilience. The book proves the necessity and prospects of research and implementation in the theory and practice of police education of the concept of Ukrainian general scientific methodology regarding the unity of the formation and development of a Human on the basis of the cognitive-emotional-volitional triad of components of the value experience of the individual. Based on the real originality of the formation of the value experience of a police officer in the process of professional training, constructive practice, the general theoretical and methodological origins and meaningful lines of practical improvement and further personal and professional growth of a police officer in their official activities as mechanisms for protecting human rights and freedoms in the activities of law enforcement officers are identified. The novelty of the approaches is associated with the use of the key foundations of psycho-pedagogical support and the development of pedagogical skills of HEI teachers with special learning conditions, the activities of mentors to harmonize the professional training of the applicant's personality in the system of departmental education, the use of a criteria approach for assessing learning outcomes, the design features of police work programs in the context of the scale of human-dimensional meanings evaluating the quality of higher education The constructiveness of this perspective is distinguished, first of all, by a holistic combination and use as the latest achievements of the psychological, pedagogical, legal, neurophysiological branches of scientific knowledge to explain the newly formed pedagogical phenomena of the modern educational sphere in the aspect of innovativeness of markers for assessing the quality of educational and research activities education; and the understanding that universal human and nation-creating value orientations as a special social basis of the culturological worldview should be extrapolated into the global function of modern education, which should determine and realize its social power that characterizes civilizational development in different historical epochs. In this context, the issues of introducing the axiological essence, designing, implementing and evaluating the relevant educational programs for training officers of the National Police are specified. In general, the developments contained in this collective monograph will be suitable for use in the pedagogical and psychological support of educational activities for the training of police officers both in the framework of formal and non-formal education.

Emil Artin zählt zu den maßgeblichen Mathematikern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Geboren 1898 in Wien, kam er 1922 nach Hamburg, wo er in seiner wissenschaftlichen Karriere mit bahnbrechenden Arbeiten wesentlich dazu beitrug, dass die Mathematik an der noch jungen Hamburgischen Universität Weltgeltung erlangte. Im Herbst 1937 verließ Artin wegen der NS-Diktatur und der jüdischen Herkunft seiner Ehefrau Natascha Deutschland. Zwei Jahrzehnte lang lebten sie mit den drei gemeinsamen Kindern in den USA. Artin wirkte als Professor an den Universitäten von Notre Dame, Bloomington und Princeton. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Emigranten kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück und hatte von 1958 bis zu seinem frühen Tod im Dezember 1962 einen Lehrstuhl an seiner »alten« Universität Hamburg inne. Das Porträt zeigt Emil Artin nicht nur als brillanten Forscher, Lehrer und Vortragenden, sondern als vielseitig interessierten Menschen. Artin hatte eine ausgeprägte Neigung zur Musik, spielte mehrere Instrumente und bewegte sich in einem kreativen Freundeskreis aus bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern. Eine zweimonatige Reise nach Island im Jahr 1925 hielt er in einem Reisetagebuch sowie in Fotografien fest. Emil Artin (1898-1962) kam nach seinem Studium in Wien und Leipzig 1922 als Assistent an das Mathematische Seminar der Hamburgischen Universität, wo er innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Ordinarius aufstieg. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book.

    Description: Bamberg verfügte seit dem Spätmittelalter über ein differenziertes Gesundheitswesen mit Spitälern, Siechenhäusern, Apotheken und Badstuben; seit dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert stellten die Bischöfe zudem Hof- und Leibärzte an. Anders als in protestantischen Städten wie Nürnberg kam es im katholischen Bamberg jedoch nicht zur Zentralisierung und Kommunalisierung der Gesundheitsfürsorge, so dass diese von einer Vielzahl von Akteuren gestaltet wurde. Charakteristisch für das 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war das Verständnis von Epidemien als Strafen Gottes für die Sünden der Menschen, das nicht nur von Herrschern und Klerus, sondern auch von studierten Ärzten geteilt wurde. Gleichwohl sahen Regierung und Ärzteschaft die Untertanen in der Pflicht, sich bestmöglich gegen Epidemien zu schützen, und empfahlen zu diesem Zweck Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung von Hygiene und Luftqualität sowie zur Isolation und Behandlung von Infizierten. Da nicht alle Untertanen Zugang zu Ärzten hatten und die vormoderne Medizin vielen Krankheiten machtlos gegenüberstand, entwickelte sich in Bamberg wie in anderen Städten überdies ein medizinischer Marktplatz, auf dem auch reisende Heiler sowie der örtliche Scharfrichter ihre Dienste anboten. Auf eine neue Grundlage gestellt wurde das Bamberger Medizinalwesen durch die Gründung des Allgemeinen Krankenhauses im Jahre 1789, das sich der Behandlung heilbarer Krankheiten widmete. Obwohl nach 1800 auch eine medizinisch-chirurgische Schule und eine der ersten Nervenheilanstalten Deutschlands entstanden, blieb das Gesundheitswesen bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein von vormodernen Strukturen und Vorstellungen geprägt. Diese Entwicklungen werden in einer Ausstellung in der Staatsbibliothek Bamberg, die in einem studentischen Seminar konzipiert wurde, sowie in diesem Begleitband anhand von rund 40 Exponaten nachvollzogen.

    Description: Between 1919 and 1920, the eastern territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were temporarily administered by the Civic Management of Eastern Territories, established by Józef Piłsudski. The residents of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania were to determine their future governance. Piłsudski placed the Civic Management outside the structures of the Polish government, while his opponents from the Polish nationalist wing wanted to suborn it to the government in Warsaw. Based on hitherto unknown archival documents, the author describes the reasons for the failure of Piłsudski’s federation idea, both on the Polish side, as well as errors by Belarusian leaders and the policy of the Lithuanian state.

    Description: Als Produzent für Regenmäntel wurde die Firma Rappolt & Söhne, die seit 1928 den Markennamen ERES trug, bekannt. Drei Generationen prägten die Unternehmensgeschichte. Der Name durfte bleiben, die Familie nicht. Das Hamburger Unternehmen Oppenheim & Rappolt wurde 1862 gegründet, firmierte seit 1897 unter dem Namen Rappolt & Söhne und existierte bis 1982 unter dem Markennahmen ERES. Gründer Joseph Rappolt (1835-1907) und danach seine Söhne Paul, Arthur und Franz leiteten die Geschicke der Firma, deren Sitz sich seit 1912 in der Mönckebergstraße 11 befand. Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg waren Regenmäntel das Hauptgeschäft, später ergänzten leichte und schwerere Stoffmäntel für Damen und Herren das Sortiment. 1938 mussten die Rappolts ihre Firma verkaufen, als Juden drohte ihnen die Deportation. Die meisten jüngeren Familienmitglieder konnten unter großen Schwierigkeiten aus Deutschland fliehen, die älteren wollten sich nicht zur rechtzeitigen Emigration entscheiden; einige von ihnen wählten den Freitod, andere wurden ermordet. Franz Rappolt (1870-1943) – der sich als angesehener Bürger ehrenamtlich in Vereinen und im Plenum der Hamburger Handelskammer engagierte, diese Tätigkeit jedoch 1933 unfreiwillig aufgeben musste – starb wie seine Schwägerin Johanna (1870-1942) in Theresienstadt, sein Bruder Paul (1863-1940) starb noch vor der Deportation. Das Rappolt-Haus in der Mönckebergstraße 11 und 13 prägt bis heute das Bild von Hamburgs bekanntester Einkaufsmeile. Das imposante Gebäude wurde im Auftrag der Firma Rappolt & Söhne errichtet. Nach 1933 mussten die beiden Firmeninhaber Franz und Paul Rappolt mit ihren Familien erleben, wie die Nationalsozialisten ihre erfolgreiche Arbeit torpedierten, sich Schritt für Schritt ihres Eigentums bemächtigten und sie zuletzt mit dem Tod bedrohten.

    Description: In Europe’s recent history, there have been several challenges to the strength of the European Union—Brexit, COVID, financial crises, and global tensions—bringing an increased need to understand the ways that the European Union (EU) could successfully stay together or fall apart. In examining how the European Union has changed since 1993, important puzzles have emerged, including how national government functions are transferred to the EU without reforming the EU, how increased transparency is announced while decisions are approved in informal meetings, and how the effects of the polarizing rise of Euroscepticism can be managed to still promote the formation of solidarity and trust among Europeans. To understand these puzzles, Thomas König introduces a new theory of (supra)national partyism to help explain the causes and consequences of choices made by political leaders for Europe. He uses a game-theoretical perspective to look at how conditions for leaders change through accessions of new members, shocks, and crises, and separates institutional choices into two different games played by office- and policy-seeking political leaders—the interstate summit game and the national game of party competition. The Dynamics of European Integration reveals how the reorganization of electoral systems can harness dissensus and polarization among diverse national constituencies to enable the promotion of solidarity and trust in the EU.

    Description: Avaldsnes on Karmøy in Rogaland, which according to Snorre was King Harald Fairhair's royal estate, has been the center of a major research effort since 2007. Extensive excavations have, among other things, uncovered the remains of a lordly settlement from the AD 200s–400s and the ruins of a royal masonry complex from around AD 1300. Important insights have been gained about the place, the region, and the history of the Norwegian kingdom, and the results are also of significance for international scholarly debates. The papers in this book are based on lectures from the Karmøy Seminar 2022, and have a joint spotlight on the nature of lordship and kingship. The themes range from tribal societies in Roman times via the first kings of the Viking Age to the Norwegian kingdom's collapse at Håkon 6. Magnusson's death in 1380. Prominent professionals from Norway, Sweden and England discuss, among other things, the migrations of Ryger, Goths, and other tribes in the continent in the first centuries AD, the queens and queen mothers of the Viking Age, Harald Fairhair's overseas contacts, and the Norwegian kingship's roots in Nordvegen, the sailing route along the western coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula. Frans-Arne Stylegar (f. 1969) er arkeolog, tidligere fylkeskonservator i Vest-Agder og direktør for Varanger museum IKS, og arbeider nå som kulturminneekspert i Multiconsult.

    Description: This book is an ethnographic account of education and migration from the perspective of three groups of South Koreans in contemporary China: migrant parents, children/students, and educational agents. The book reveals how these temporary migrants make choices, plan their trajectories and engage with the authorities, both in China and South Korea. Migrant subjectivities among these groups are driven by and respond to the education-migration regimes of both the sending and receiving countries. As ‘people in between’, they occupy flexible and multiple positionalities that are transnationally distributed. However, paradoxically, they experience a juxtaposition of privilege, integration and separation, which is indicative of the Chinese style of internationalisation. The book adds weight to the argument that China is a temporary destination for foreigners and not one for long-term settlement.

    Description: Historians have often either ignored Anacharsis Cloots (1755–1794) or considered him deranged because he claimed to be the ‘orator of the human race’ and devised a ‘universal republic’ based on the ‘sovereignty of the human race’. This book is the first comprehensive study of the entire body of Cloots’s written works and political actions. By contextualizing them, the book non only rehabilitates Cloots as a political thinker worthy of consideration, but also argues that his political thought constitutes a specific branch of republicanism in the age of Atlantic revolutions: cosmopolitan republicanism. The introduction suggests how 18th-century French cosmopolitanism was a new philosophical tradition, but was composed of several themes, which the book then analyses in Cloots’s writings. The first chapter provides a brief overview of his life. The second chapter explains why he called himself orator and wrote pamphlets, and why contemporary readers should not discard this as non-philosophical. Having established Cloots’s writings as constituting a philosophical system, the following chapters explores it through the themes laid out in the introduction. First, the concept of reason and his understanding of science. Second, the paradigm of natural law and the role of nature in moral and political thought. Third, the conception of humanity and individuals in nature and society. Finally, republicanism and its principles.
