    Description: Revolution and Regeneration is a book about the aging of the "young men of 1776," the men who came to adulthood with the American Revolution, found their identity merged with the new republic they had created, and grew old as the nation matured. As they identified themselves with their nation's past, so they used that past to judge their own lives and what they had accomplished, or failed to accomplish. Revolution and Regeneration is a marriage of psychohistory and intellectual history, applying the principles of the psychology of maturation to a generation whose experiences were crucial to our history-the generation of Adams, Jefferson, Hamilton, and Madison. Their need for identity drove them to demand independence for themselves and their communities. Revolution and Regeneration tells their stories, from youth to old age.     Description: The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia document the colony through its first twenty-five years and includes correspondence between Georgia founder James Oglethorpe and the Trustees for Establishing the Colony, as well as records pertaining to land grants; agreements and interactions with Indigenous peoples; the settlement of a small Jewish community and the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees; and the removal on restrictions of land tenure, rum, and slavery in the colony. Most of the local records of colonial Georgia were destroyed during the Revolution. Under Governor James Wright's direction, merchant John Graham loaded much of the official records on his vessel in the Savannah River. During the Battle of the Rice Boats in March 1776, the Inverness was burned while it lay at anchor. The destructive civil war that occurred in the latter phases of the Revolution resulted in further destruction. The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, drawn from archival material in Great Britain, remain a unique source. Volume 20 concerns the actual founding of Georgia and covers the years 1732-35. It provides background on the settlement and a great deal about the arrival of the colonists and the conditions that they found. Volume 27, spanning the years 1754-56, contains the papers of Georgia's first governor, John Reynolds, as well as the correspondence of various inhabitants. Volume 28, Part I, contains the papers of governors John Reynolds, Henry Ellis, and James Wright from 1757 to 1763. Volume 28, Part II includes the papers of Governor James Wright, acting governor James Habersham, and others. Volume 29 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1732-1738. Volume 30 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1738-1745 Volume 31 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1745-1752 Volume 32 includes entry books of commissions, powers, instructions, leases, grants of land, and other documents by the Trustees.

    Description: Adams and Jefferson: A Revolutionary Dialogue documents the public lives and personal friendship of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, from their first meeting as delegates to the Second Continental Congress to their deaths on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This study takes a look at some of the famous correspondence between the two statesmen who devoted their lives to a new chapter of freedom and self-government. Peterson draws an extended parallel between the backgrounds, experiences, personalities, and intellectual styles of Adams and Jefferson and examines their work in the achievement of independence and the design of new governments for Massachusetts and Virginia. While Adams and Jefferson had much in common, their ideas of human nature, history, society, and government included many differences that would reveal themselves in the course of time. Merrill D. Peterson looks at Adams and Jefferson's relationship across their lives, including their disputes in the midst of the coming French Revolution, their excitement for the establishment of a new American government under the Constitution, their contest for the presidency in 1796, and their eventual reconciliation. How Hip Hop Became Hit Pop examines the programming practices at commercial radio stations in the 1980s and early 1990s to uncover how the radio industry facilitated hip hop's introduction into the musical mainstream. Constructed primarily by the Top 40 radio format, the musical mainstream featured mostly white artists for mostly white audiences. With the introduction of hip hop to these programs, the radio industry was fundamentally altered, as stations struggled to incorporate the genre's diverse audience. At the same time, as artists negotiated expanding audiences and industry pressure to make songs fit within the confines of radio formats, the sound of hip hop changed. Drawing from archival research, Amy Coddington shows how the racial structuring of the radio industry influenced the way hip hop was sold to the American public, and how the genre's growing popularity transformed ideas about who constitutes the mainstream.

Volume 27, spanning the years 1754-56, contains the papers of Georgia's first governor, John Reynolds, as well as the correspondence of various inhabitants.     Description: The eighteen volumes of Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America (reproduced in sixteen discrete books) contain the diaries and letters of Lutheran pastors who ministered to the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees, in Georgia. Samuel Urlsperger collected and edited these writings into the Urlsperger Reports printed at Orphanage Press, Halle, Germany, from 1735 to 1760. The original German publication, Ausführliche Nachricht von den saltzburgischen Emigranten, is available through the Internet Archive, but this English-language translation has not been available online until now. In the mid-eighteenth century, Samuel Urlsperger of the Lutheran Ministry in Augsburg edited the German edition of the Detailed Reports after having distributed the many reports to the faithful in Germany. He made major deletions for both diplomatic and economic reasons and suppressed proper names. His son, Johann August Urlsperger, succeeded him. He took even greater liberties with the text, deleting large sections and rearranging others. The English version, translated and edited by George Fenwick Jones, a German scholar, restores the deleted sections and the proper names and provides the original sequencing of the material. The Detailed Reports offer insight into daily life in colonial Georgia and provide precious details and vignettes on subjects that receive less attention in other sources, notably African Americans, women, silk production, and the cost of goods in a frontier colony. The Reports are an underutilized resource for the study of this period and an unparalleled source for the evolution of a rural community during the early years of the colony.     Description: The Practice of Texts examines the uses of the Sanskrit medical classics in two educational institutions of India’s classical life science, Ayurveda: the college and the gurukula. In this interdisciplinary study, Anthony Cerulli probes late- and postcolonial reforms in ayurvedic education, the development of the ayurvedic college, and the impacts of the college curriculum on ways that ayurvedic physicians understand and use the Sanskrit classics in their professional work today. His fieldwork in south India illuminates the nature of philology and ritual in the ayurvedic gurukula and showcases how knowledge is exchanged among students, teachers, and patients. The result, Cerulli shows, is that the Sanskrit classics are presented and applied differently in the college and gurukula, producing a variety of relationships with these texts among practitioners. By interrogating the politics surrounding the place of the Sanskrit classics in ayurvedic curricula, this book reveals a spectrum of views about the history and tradition of Ayurveda in modern India.

Shoemaker shows how the Qur’an preserves a surprisingly diverse array of memories regarding the text’s early history and its canonization. To this he adds perspectives from radiocarbon dating of manuscripts, the linguistic history of Arabic, the social and cultural history of late ancient Arabia, and the limitations of human memory and oral transmission, as well as various peculiarities of the Qur’anic text itself. Considering all the relevant data to present the most comprehensive and convincing examination of the origin and evolution of the Qur’an available, Shoemaker concludes that the canonical text of the Qur’an was most likely produced only around the turn of the eighth century.

    Description: Huizhou studies the construction of local identity through kinship in the prefecture of Huizhou, the most prominent merchant stronghold of Ming China. Employing an array of untapped genealogies and other sources, Qitao Guo explores how developments in the sociocultural, religious, and gender realms from the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries intertwined to shape Huizhou identity as a land of "prominent lineages." This gentrified self-image both sheltered and guided the development of mercantile lineages, which were further bolstered by the gender regime and the local religious order. As Guo demonstrates, the discrepancy between representation and practice helps explain Huizhou's triumphs. The more active the economy became, the more those central to its commercialization embraced conservative sociocultural norms. Home lineages embraced neo-Confucian orthodoxy even as they provided the financial and logistical support to assure the success of Huizhou merchants. The end result was not "capitalism" but a gentrified mercantile lineage culture with Chinese—or Huizhou—characteristics.

By examining a unique body of materials written in Chinese, Manchu, and Korean, and building on recent studies in New Qing History, Seonmin Kim adds new perspectives to current understandings of the remarkable transformation of the Manchu Qing dynasty (1636–1912) from a tribal state to a universal empire. This book discusses early Manchu history and explores the Qing Empire’s policy of controlling Manchuria and Chosŏn Korea. Kim also contributes to the Korean history of the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910) by challenging conventional accounts that embrace a China-centered interpretation of the tributary relationship between the two polities, stressing instead the agency of Chosŏn Korea in the formation of the Qing Empire. This study demonstrates how Koreans interpreted and employed this relationship in order to preserve the boundary—and peace—with the suzerain power. By focusing on the historical significance of the China-Korea boundary, this book defines the nature of the Qing Empire through the dynamics of contacts and conflicts under both the cultural and material frameworks of its tributary relationship with Chosŏn Korea.

In the Renaissance, an era of epistemic fractures, when the clash between the 'new science' (Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius, Bacon, etcetera) and the authority of ancient texts produced the very notion of modernity, the extended and expanding geography of ancient Rome becomes, for Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, a privileged arena in which to question the nature of bodies and the place they hold in a changing order of the universe. Drawing on the rich scenario provided by Shakespeare's Rome, and adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors of this volume address the way in which the different bodies of the earthly and heavenly spheres are re-mapped in Shakespeare's time and in early modern European culture. More precisely, they investigate the way bodies are fashioned to suit or deconstruct a culturally articulated system of analogies between earth and heaven, microcosm and macrocosm. As a whole, this collection brings to the fore a wide range of issues connected to the Renaissance re-mapping of the world and the human. Dabei wurden vor allem ihr Wirken auf den Bühnen des italienischen Musiktheaters des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts oder die Rezeption der hohen Männerstimme auf das barocke Publikum beleuchtet. Die vorliegende geschichtswissenschaftliche Studie konzentriert sich hingegen auf die Personen als soziale Akteure in der Spätphase dieses Phänomens im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert, wobei exemplarisch vier mitteleuropäische Fürstenhöfe (Wien, München, Dresden, Stuttgart) in den Blick genommen werden.In detaillierten Analysen der Lebenswelten des Hofes und der Residenzstadt fächert die Autorin auf, welchen hohen Stellenwert Kastratensänger innerhalb der höfischen Machtrepräsentation bis zum Schluss besaßen, wie sie sich innerhalb höfischer Anstellungsstrukturen immer wieder erneut positionierten, mit den Bewohnern der Residenzstädte interagierten und welche wichtigen Rollen sie gegenüber Familienangehörigen einnahmen.Insbesondere durch die Untersuchung des individuellen Umgangs mit dem vermeintlichen körperlichen Defizit kann sie zeigen, dass die Annahme, Kastraten seien in der Endphase ihres Bestehens grundsätzlich als defizitäre »verstümmelte Körper« wahrgenommen worden, revidiert werden muss. Genauso selbstverständlich gilt sie aber auch für das 16. Jahrhundert und die Frühe Neuzeit insgesamt. Ein allseits bekanntes Beispiel dafür ist die Verbesserung der Techniken des Buchdrucks durch die Verwendung beweglicher Lettern. Dies führte dazu, dass neue Medien entstanden und sich dauerhaft etablierten, wie z.B. die Flugschrift und die „Neue Zeitung“. Andere bereits bekannte Genera wie Lieder und Predigten erhielten durch die veränderte Kommunikationssituation eine neue Bedeutung in den Auseinandersetzungen der Zeit. Daraus ergaben sich vielfältige Chancen und Heraus­forderungen, denn die Nutzung dieser neuen Medien wie die Transformation bestehender Medienformate und deren flächendeckende Verwendung setzte politische, soziale, juristische und religiöse Veränderungsprozesse in Gang bzw. beförderte sie.Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes möchten diese neuen Kommunikationsformen und -methoden ebenso wie die Veränderungsprozesse für das 16. Jahrhundert ausleuchten. Dies geschieht, indem Wandlungs- und Transformationsprozesse durch die Nutzung bekannter sowie die Schaffung neuer Medienformate, der Umgang mit Meinungsvielfalt und der damit einhergehenden Pluralität an Deutungen des Zeitgeschehens sowie die Entstehung einer neuen Streitkultur und neue Ordnungsversuche analysiert werden.

    Description: Rules of the House examines the transformation of the Korean family during and after Japanese colonial rule. Through in-depth reading of civil litigation records, the book shows how the Japanese colonial legal system transformed Korean families from the traditional patrilineal family system into small, patriarchal households. The new domestic pattern proved remarkably durable, forming the basis of postcolonial family life. Women feature prominently in the book. Increasingly marginalized by patriarchy, women embodied the fault line between one family system as it receded and the other as it expanded under the auspices of Japanese colonial law. As a consequence, women’s rights to family property, inheritance, divorce, and adoption of heirs were frequently challenged by family members. Far from being quiet victims, these women brought their cases to the colonial courts and won a surprising number of cases. The book highlights how legal discourse about women’s rights in colonial civil courts articulated the transformation of the family.

Relating postcolonial discourses to a reading of Manchurian action films, kisaeng and gangster films, and revenge horror films, Parameters of Disavowal shows how filmmakers reworked, recontextualized, and erased ideas and symbols of colonial power. In particular, Jinsoo An examines how South Korean films privileged certain sites, such as the kisaeng house and the Manchurian frontier, generating unique meanings that challenged the domination of the colonial power, and how horror films indirectly explored both the continuing trauma of colonial violence and lingering emotional ties to the colonial order. Espousing the ideology of nationalism while responding to a new Cold War order that positioned Japan and South Korea as political and economic allies, postcolonial cinema formulated distinctive ways of seeing and imagining the colonial past.

Language Between God and the Poets reads the theory of four major scholars and asks how the conceptual vocabulary they shared enabled them to create theory in lexicography, theology, logic, and poetics. Their ideas engaged God and poetry at the nexus of language, mind, and reality. Their core conceptual vocabulary carved reality at the joints in a manner quite different from Anglophone and European thought in any period. This vocabulary centered around the words maʿnā (“mental content”) and ḥaqīqah (“accuracy”), two concepts for which Alexander Key develops a translation methodology with the help of Wittgenstein and Kuhn. Language Between God and the Poets helps us see how fundamental the lexicon and lexicography can be to all kinds of theory, how theology can be a science of naming, how logic interacts with language, and how poetic affect can be built on grammar and logic. The four scholars are ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī, Ibn Fūrak, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī.

Language, Nation, Race explores the various language reforms at the onset of Japanese modernity, a time when a “national language” (kokugo) was produced to standardize Japanese. Faced with the threat of Western colonialism, Meiji intellectuals proposed various reforms to standardize the Japanese language in order to quickly educate the illiterate masses. This book liberates these language reforms from the predetermined category of the “nation,” for such a notion had yet to exist as a clear telos to which the reforms aspired. Atsuko Ueda draws on, while critically intervening in, the vast scholarship of language reform that engaged with numerous works of postcolonial and cultural studies. She examines the first two decades of the Meiji period, with specific focus on the issue of race, contending that no analysis of imperialism or nationalism is possible without it.

Auch die Geschichtswissenschaft hat sich des Themas Europa in den vergangenen Jahren verstärkt angenommen, doch die Forschung zu den einzelnen europäischen Ländern ist einer integrativen Europa-Historiographie weit voraus. Man könnte auch sagen: Sie ist erst auf dem Weg nach Europa. Das Ziel der Beiträger dieses Bandes ist es, den Untersuchungsgegenstand »Europa« genauer zu fassen. Dies allerdings gerade nicht in dem Sinne, die Europabilder, die am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts verbreitet sind, auf die Vergangenheit zu übertragen und so der Gefahr zu erliegen, eine teleologisch auf das heutige (EU-)Europa ausgerichtete Geschichte des Kontinents zu pflegen.     Description: Historically, for sustaining and reproducing their economic lives, people have obtained goods and services through various ways. How did people tackle issues that the market did not handle well? This volume compares early modern efforts to provide “public goods”—defined in contraposition to market-mediated goods and goods provided through personal relations, such as kinship ties. We examine poverty and famine relief, infrastructure building, and forestry management in East Asia and Europe, using Japan’s Tokugawa era (1603–1868) as a benchmark from which consider the cases in Prussia, China, and England. Taking advantage of rich scholarship on the role of autonomous village and regional society in Japan’s early modern history, the volume highlights the diverse approaches to providing public goods across societies, relativizing the discussion on the formation of fiscal state drawn from the experience in “advanced” Western Europe, and it constructs the beginnings of an early modern basis for forecasting the diversity in public-goods provision future into the modern and contemporary periods.

Dabei profitierte es davon, stets auf eigene, am Markt gewonnene Finanzmittel zurückgreifen zu können und von staatlichen Transferleistungen weitgehend unabhängig zu sein. Verleger und Redakteure nahmen das »Agenda-Setting« nach eigenen Kriterien vor, eher vom Nachrichtenwert als von staatlichen Sprachregelungen geleitet. Die Leserschaft bestand zunächst aus der höfischen Machtelite und den werdenden und arrivierten Gelehrten, reichte jedoch schon im 17. Jahrhundert darüber hinaus, wobei die Rezeption durch die Ungelehrten das gesamte 18. Jahrhundert hindurch anwuchs.

The remaking of the world since 1945 has led to increased demographic diversity within many states, and greater acknowledgment of its worth. “Multiculturalism” refers to the political, legal and philosophical strategies which emerged to accommodate this newfound social diversity, and the accompanying public debates. Each chapter explores particular state responses to cultural diversity, utilizing various disciplinary approaches but addressing common questions: What is “multiculturalism,” and why did it come about? What dilemmas has it posed for liberal-democratic governance? How have these been responded to in theory and practice, and are the different responses adequate? Are there alternative approaches to cultural diversity that have been overlooked? Issues covered include immigration, national minorities, indigenous peoples, nation-state building, liberal-democratic citizenship, constitutionalism, nationalism, group politics, political economy, secularism, globalization, decolonization, and the relationship between social theory and practice. The volume situates modern multiculturalism in its national, international and historical contexts, tracing the historical roots of present dilemmas to the intertwined legacies of imperialism and liberalism. It thereby shows that multiculturalism has implications which stretch beyond its current formulations in both public and academic discourse, casting doubt on basic assumptions behind modern liberal democracy, and even on the viability of the nation-state in its present form.     Description: The fate of cultural property extracted during the Nazi era has increasingly been the subject of provenance research since the 1990s. This volume combines the latest findings of provenance research in libraries and provides contributions to the history of the library during the Nazi era. Provenance research is almost only reported in the media when it concerns valuable works of art. For books, it is relatively difficult: it is mostly about mass-produced goods without great material value and the books have often reached their locations after hard-to-find odysseys. Nevertheless, more and more libraries deal with their Nazi past. Library historian Jürgen Babendreier puts it in a nutshell: "In the robbed books, history comes to life, invisible remembrance continues, historical responsibility becomes present."

    Description: Das frühneuzeitliche Europa ist gekennzeichnet durch eine enorme Zunahme von Mobilität, bedingt durch bessere Verkehrswege und technische Neuerungen seit dem Ausgang des Mittelalters. Religion konnte sich einerseits hemmend auf solche Mobilitätsprozesse auswirken. Andererseits konnten religiöse Beweggründe raumbezogene Mobilität aber auch befördern, ja zum Teil überhaupt erst bewirken. So löste die konfessionelle Spaltung der lateinischen Christenheit und die nachfolgende Konfessionalisierung in den Territorien Migrationsprozesse bisher ungekannter Größe aus, bis hin zur Auswanderung ganzer Glaubensgemeinschaften nach Übersee.Aber auch wirtschaftliche Zwänge, Kriege und Hungersnöte, die Ausübung von Handel und bestimmten Gewerben oder die akademische Ausbildung sowie die adelige Standeserziehung konnten Menschen gleich welchen religiösen Bekenntnisses dazu veranlassen, dauerhaft oder zeitweilig ihren Aufenthaltsort zu wechseln.Beide Phänomene, Religion und Mobilität, sind von der historischen Forschung bislang zumeist getrennt voneinander behandelt worden. Die Konfessionalisierungsforschung hat Religion bislang als Impulsgeber für Mobilität wahrgenommen und dabei den Zusammenhang mit anderen Formen von Mobilität zum Teil vernachlässigt.Die Beiträge des Bandes tragen dazu bei, religions- und migrationsgeschichtliche Ansätze und Fragestellungen zusammenzuführen und enger miteinander zu verzahnen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage nach dem Stellenwert von Mobilität für die Ausbildung oder Auflösung religiös-konfessioneller Identitäten im frühneuzeitlichen Europa.

Jahrhunderts, wurden Nachrichten aus aller Welt publiziert, die allesamt die Ausbreitung des Reiches Gottes dokumentieren sollten. In Zeiten von Deismus und Aufklärung, in denen zentrale Fundamente der protestantischen Orthodoxie hinterfragt wurden, sollten diese Nachrichten zeigen, dass Gott noch in der Geschichte wirkt und seine Verheißungen erfüllt. Es waren dies Nachrichten über: die Heidenmission, die Judenmission, den Fall „Babels“ – also den Fall des Papsttums, die Verfolgung von Protestanten, die Verbreitung des Wortes Gottes, obrigkeitliche Verordnungen im Dienste des Reiches Gottes, den Bau von Schul- und Waisenhäusern, den Nachweis des providentiellen Wirkens Gottes in Form von Zeichen und Wundern und zuletzt Erweckungen, die in den 1730/40er Jahren wellenartig die deutschen Länder, England, Schottland und Nordamerika erfassten. Die Erweckungen wurden dabei als kraftvolle Ausgießung des Heiligen Geistes gedeutet. Geschichtstheologische Vorstellungen waren für die Pietisten und Erweckten zentrale Motivationsfaktoren, aktiv an der Ausbreitung des Reiches Gottes mitzuwirken.

Die hier erstmals edierten 107 Einträge aus pinkasim von Gemeinden in den Niederlanden, Deutschland, Österreich, Tschechien, Polen und Russland bieten einen repräsentativen Überblick über das Agieren frühneuzeitlicher aschkenasischer Fürsprecher sowie über ihre Handlungsspielräume innerhalb des restriktiven Rechtsrahmens. Die Dokumente werden in ihrer meist hebräischen oder jiddischen Originalsprache mit kommentierten deutschen Übersetzungen sowie ausführlichen Einleitungen präsentiert.

    Description: This collection explores how Christian individuals and institutions combined the topics of faith and national identity in twentieth-century Europe. “National identity” is understood in a broad sense that includes discourses of citizenship, narratives of cultural or linguistic belonging, or “national” characteristics. It considers various geographical contexts, and takes into account processes of cross-national exchange and transfer. It shows how national and denominational identities were often mutually constitutive, at times leading to a strongly exclusionary stance against “other” national or religious groups. In different circumstances, religiously minded thinkers critiqued nationalism, emphasising the universalist strains of their faith, with varying degrees of success. Throughout the century church officials and lay Christians have had to come to terms with the relationship between their national and “European” identities within the processes of Europeanisation.

Deutlich wird aber auch, wo die Grenzen der persönlichen Ausübung des bischöflichen Amtes lagen und welche Konstellationen die persönliche Amtsausübung begünstigten und welche sie eher behinderten. Damit wird die bisherige Annahme, die geistlichen Fürsten überließen ihre geistlichen Aufgaben vollständig ihren Weihbischöfen und konzentrierten sich allein auf ihre fürstliche Stellung, überwunden. Bettina Braun untersucht erstmals systematisch und vergleichend zentrale Bereiche des fürstbischöflichen Handelns, ohne deren Kenntnis man den Fürstbischöfen in der Endphase des Alten Reichs nicht gerecht werden kann.

    Description: In Mountain, Water, Rock, God, Luke Whitmore situates the disastrous flooding that fell on the Hindu Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath in 2013 within its broader religious and ecological contexts. For centuries, the enmeshing of Shiva with the Himalayan environment has animated how Hindus conceptualize and experience Kedarnath. The floods publicly affirmed the fundamentally Himalayan and Shiva-oriented character of this place. At the same time, the floods made it clear that the patterns of commercialization, development, and regulation of recent decades in Uttarakhand, patterns that arose in response to new statehood and an influx of middle-class pilgrims and tourists, were starkly out of place. People connected to Kedarnath today therefore understand both the floods and the recent short-sighted development that multiplied the impact of the floods both as the natural consequence of human fault and as an indication of a growing disconnect with the Himalayan environment and its resident divine powers. Whitmore explores the longer story of this powerful realm of Shiva through a holistic theoretical perspective that integrates phenomenological and systems-based approaches to the study of religion, pilgrimage, place, and ecology by thinking about Kedarnath as a place that is experienced as an ecosocial system characterized by complexity.     Description: How did the Greeks respond to the experiences of uncertainty that they so acutely made in the aftermath of Alexander the Great's world-changing conquest of the Persian Empire? How were old values upheld and reshaped? And how did the societies of Greek cities and royal courts accommodate the overwhelming newfound power of Greek individuals? By developing a custom methodology, this book tries to shed new light on the complex textuality of the period of the Diadochi, the successors of Alexander. In four case studies, new readings are presented of Theophrastus Characters and Xenophon's Cyropaedia, but also of the substantial early Hellenistic anecdotal material, as well as the Colossus of Rhodes. The studies are united by an interest in how these texts cast the relationships between individuals and how they constructed various media of interrelation, such as money, friendship, women and the divine. Reading these texts on these terms reveals how values were renegotiated through paradoxes and inverted stories that subtly reshaped the utopias of the 4th century BCE. Overall, the study's hypothesis is that this particular brand of social storytelling contributed to the stabilisation of the nascent Hellenistic world by providing new visions of society capable of accommodating individual power and offering a new sense of control and place.

Zum anderen veränderten sich aber auch die interreligiösen Beziehungen und wurden stärker normiert und seltener situativ ausgehandelt.Religion war von grundlegender Bedeutung für imperiale Herrschaft, nicht zuletzt als Gegengewicht zu nationalen Bestrebungen. Im Falle der Serben wirkte dabei imperial geregelte Religion über ihre Organisationen und ihre Geistlichen fördernd für die Nationalbewegung. Habsburg reagierte daher seit Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs mit harter Repression gegen serbisch-orthodoxe Priester, kirchliche Laien und Kircheninstitutionen. Für die häufige Verschmelzung von Religion und Nation spielten in Südosteuropa gerade die großen Reiche eine entscheidende Rolle.

    Description: Die Bevölkerungsgröße wurde erst im Laufe der Frühen Neuzeit zu einem Thema der Politik. Politische Theoretiker in Deutschland übernahmen um 1600 die in Italien entwickelte Vorstellung, der Staat müsse sich um die Bevölkerungsentwicklung kümmern. Die Forderung nach einer expansiven Bevölkerungspolitik kam somit schon vor den Verwüstungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges auf. Diese zuerst in gelehrten Werken vertretene Idee setzte sich im Laufe des 17. Jahrhunderts immer mehr durch und wurde zu einem Kernbestand des Kameralismus. Daraus entwickelte sich schließlich der Populationismus des 18. Jahrhunderts, der eine mit allen Mitteln forcierte Bevölkerungsvergrößerung forderte und den Erfolg jeglicher Politik allein am demografischen Wachstum maß. Justus Nipperdey erforscht mit seiner Arbeit erstmals die Entstehung des bevölkerungspolitischen Konzepts im Italien des 16. Jahrhunderts, seine Übernahme in die politische Theorie im Alten Reich und seine Verbreitung von den gelehrten lateinischen Politikkompendien in deutschsprachige Traktate.

    Description: Debatten über gesellschaftliche Modernisierungsprozesse bestimmten den öffentlichen Diskurs der Weimarer Republik. Eine besondere Rolle nahmen dabei die in deutschen Zeitungen und Illustrierten erzeugten Bilder der USA und der Sowjetunion ein, die als Modernitätsprojekte wahrgenommen wurden. Hier setzt die Untersuchung von David Franz an, die widerstreitende Darstellungen beider Länder in den führenden deutschen Printmedien der Zeit miteinander vergleicht und in die gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen der Zwischenkriegszeit einbettet. Neben journalistischen Texten wurden auch bildliche Darstellungen untersucht. Damit trägt die Studie sowohl der bisher wenig beachteten Vorbildrolle der Sowjetunion als auch der Wirkmacht bildlicher Darstellungen in den Debatten der Weimarer Republik in besonderer Weise Rechnung. Sie zeichnet dadurch umfassender als bisher die Linien der über Modernisierungsprozesse in Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Politik geführten Deutungskämpfe nach, die charakteristisch für die öffentliche Auseinandersetzung der Weimarer Republik waren.

    Description: 1982 stellte der damalige Bundespostminister Kurt Gscheidle in einem Porträt über die Bundespost fest, dass die Post zwar lebensnotwendig, doch für die meisten Menschen uninteressant sei. Diese Feststellung lässt sich auch auf das bisherige Interesse der Geschichtswissenschaft an diesem Thema übertragen. Viele Analysen zur Postgeschichte stammen vor allem aus der außeruniversitären Philatelie. In der Geschichtswissenschaft gelten Philatelie und Postgeschichte hingegen als randständig. Dieser Band betrachtet die besondere Bedeutung der Post(kommunikation) aus geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Denn mit der Post, so auch Gscheidle, hätten doch fast alle Bürgerinnen und Bürger jeden Tag zu tun. Das hochkomplexe Konstrukt Post würden die Leute jedoch nur wahrnehmen, wenn es mit all seinen Wechselbeziehungen in seiner Funktion gestört wäre.  In 1982, the former Federal Minister of Postal Services, Kurt Gscheidle, stated in a portrait of the Deutsche Bundespost that the postal service was vital, but of no interest to most people. This observation can also be applied to the interest of historical scholarship in this subject. It is therefore not surprising that many analyses of postal history come primarily from non-university philately. In historical studies, on the other hand, philately and postal history are considered marginal. This is particularly astonishing, as post (communication) has a special significance in history. Because, according to Gscheidle, almost all citizens have to deal with the post every day. However, people would only notice the highly complex construct of the postal service if its function were disturbed.

This is the first book-length study in English of the Japanese-language literary activities of early Japanese migrants to Brazil. It provides a detailed history of Japanese-language bookstores, serialized newspaper fiction, original creative works, and critical apparatuses that existed in Brazil prior to World War II. This case study of the reading and writing of one diasporic population challenges the dominant mode of literary study, in which texts are often explicitly or implicitly understood through a framework of ethno-nationalism. Self-representations by writers in the diaspora reveal flaws in this prevailing framework through what Edward Mack calls “acquired alterity,” in which expectations about the stability of ethnic identity are subverted in surprising ways. Acquired Alterity encourages a reconsideration of the ramifications (and motivations) of cultural analyses of texts and the constructions of peoplehood that are often the true objects of literary knowledge production.
