    Description: The second “Notebook of the Modern History Laboratory” takes up and develops some of the interventions presented in the Seminar on Themes and Problems of Modern History, which has been held for more than fifteen years at the SAGAS Department of the University of Florence. The contributions collected here discuss the construction of the modern state from different points of view, through the slow and complex evolution of central sovereignty over autonomy, the role of the courts, the development of diplomacy and its ceremonial and the history of the idea of freedom. Special attention is paid to the cases of the Electorate of Saxony and of the monarchy of France in the 16th century, the Consigli (recommendations) by Scipione Ammirato, the theme of democracy in the Encyclopédie and that of national plurality for the protection of minorities in the Habsburg Empire.

    Description: This work analyzes the evolution of the German Democratic Republic during 1971-1985, with particular attention to the economic sphere, relations with the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany, and the impact that changes in the international economic system have they had on these plans. The basic question concerns the actual degree of subordination of the GDR to the USSR: absolute for traditional historiography, which denies the possibility of an East German foreign policy, relative to the light of archival documents, which show a framework of bilateral relations constantly affected by tensions. In addition to analyzing the relationships in an unequal alliance between center and periphery, the study of the decision-making mechanisms internal to the GDR and the effectiveness of a system in which politics dictated the priority in terms of economic choices are at the center of this volume.

    Description: La Grande Galleria dei duchi di Savoia, inaugurata da Carlo Emanuele I nel 1608, si configurava come un complesso dispositivo architettonico, simbolico ed encomiastico all’interno del quale erano raccolti e ordinati oggetti eterogenei secondo un modello di organizzazione totalizzante della conoscenza coeva. Le diverse prospettive di ricerca, nel corso degli anni, si sono occupate della Grande Galleria prendendone in esame gli elementi costitutivi, ora distribuiti nelle diverse tipologie di fonti documentarie ad essa riconducibili. Il volume presenta la complessa questione della Grande Galleria discutendo, attraverso una prospettiva interdisciplinare, gli esiti delle diverse linee di studio e di ricerca, e, in particolare, proponendo un processo di analisi che pone al centro il documento più rilevante: l’inventario redatto dal bibliotecario di corte Giulio Torrini, con l’aiuto del figlio Bartolomeo e di altri collaboratori, a partire dai primi mesi del 1659. Il libro propone dunque la successione delle circa 950 sequenze di segni correlati alle unità documentarie localizzate nella quarta guardarobba, cui erano affidate le opere e i volumi riconducibili all’ambito della Philosophia. Queste sequenze di segni sono state correlate ad altre sequenze di segni, desunte da strumenti bibliografici successivi, che insistono sugli stessi referenti, cioè i libri nella loro concreta materialità bibliografica. Il percorso di ricostruzione bibliografica proposto si snoda attraverso una precisa sequenza di passi procedurali che hanno consentito di identificare l’unità documentaria attraverso riscritture diverse, passando dal modello di rappresentazione originario ad altri, progressivamente più dettagliati e analitici.

    Description: Gino Arias (1879-1940), Florentine historian and economist of Israeli origin, was in his later years one of the top theorists of Fascist corporatism, which he came to at the end of an as yet widely unstudied intellectual path. After reconstructing his biography, the book investigates Arias's debut as a law historian, his route towards political economics and subsequent subscription to nationalism, paving the way to his involvement in that Fascist regime of which, paradoxically, he was to be both one of the most feared theorists and most illustrious victims, owing to the exile enforced upon him by the race laws. The appendix to the book offers a wealth of new documentation, including an inventory of his archives, the transcription of 130 letters to Achille Loria and his bibliography.

Dopo un’introduzione che mette in risalto il ruolo degli studi su Ostia nell’opera scientifica della studiosa, il volume contiene una prima serie di saggi dedicati alla storia istituzionale, sociale o religiosa della città porto di Roma e che si avvalgono di dati nuovi o rivisti di natura epigrafica o archeologica. Sulla linea del percorso intellettuale e delle ricerche di Mireille Cébeillac-Gervasoni, e talvolta riallacciandosi esplicitamente ai suoi studi, la seconda parte del libro tratta più specificamente il tema delle élites dell’Italia romana, ma allargandosi alla storia del Mediterraneo romano con l’esempio dei riti funebri della colonia di Filippi. Tutti i contributi vogliono offrire un riflesso sfaccettato e nello stesso tempo, anche se non completo, almeno fedele dell’iniziativa dei Seminari Ostiensi da lei sempre sostenuta con particolare impegno, e delle ricerche che ha ispirato nella sua lunga carriera.

    Description: Nell'attuale paesaggio storiografico italiano è ben presente la volontà di lavorare sulle differenti tipologie documentarie prodotte nell’Italia dei Comuni. Così è per gli studi sugli statuti comunali, studi iniziati nel XIX secolo che proseguono tutt’oggi con atti di convegni ed edizioni documentarie, e per tutte le fonti istituzionali amministrative di carattere ordinario: delibere di organi consiliari (riformanze), registri fiscali, corrispondenze epistolari, registri giudiziari. Risultato di un convegno organizzato all'École française de Rome (6-8 giugno 2017), questo volume è il primo interamente dedicato ai registri della giustizia penale (libri maleficiorum); si tratta di documenti relativi alla gestione della cosa pubblica destinati all'azione, che racchiudono finalità performative. Sono presenti in quantità cospicue nel territorio italiano, in molti fondi di archivi e biblioteche comunali e negli Archivi di Stato. La «Rivoluzione documentaria» dell’Italia comunale ha conosciuto una delle sue più potenti espressioni anche attraverso le carte di questa amministrazione ordinaria. Facendo parte a pieno titolo di una storia della giustizia, che si è rinnovata negli ultimi anni cercando di aprirsi il più possibile a tutto il territorio italiano e mostrando punti in comune e differenze regionali, i saggi qui raccolti si soffermano sulla produzione dei libri maleficiorum. Sono indagati il loro ruolo nel sistema documentario dei comuni e di altre istituzioni, la loro collocazione nel sistema documentario generale e le relazioni con altra documentazione comunale, il funzionamento delle istituzioni giudiziarie e i meccanismi procedurali, i conflitti, i negoziati e le sentenze. Le sezioni conclusive mettono a fuoco due temi centrali in materia di pratiche sociali, privilegiate nei libri maleficiorum stessi: la violenza e il genere.

    Description: The general purpose of military paperwork in the Roman army was to control and to manage the personnel, giving detailed information about compositions of the unit, status and availability of the soldiers for duty tasks, their salaries and expenses. The needs of the service called for documents highly readable that, in their form and content, show a good degree of uniformity over time and space. Although some scholars have discussed the various typologies of documents and have reconstructed the branches of military bureaucracy, until now the topic is still a field open for study. The volume by Ornella Salati aims to address the question of documents’ composition in the Roman army during the first three centuries AD, analysing Latin papyri from Egypt. Particular attention is paid firstly to their layout, visual details (format of columns, blank spaces) and handwriting (capital and/or cursive); secondly their pattern, content and language (specific sentences, formulae) are discussed. Comparative evidence from other military contexts (Vindolanda in northern England, Dura Europos in southern-eastern Syria, Gholaia in north Africa) are also taken into account. Possible connections with time and space, and even with the material support are explored in order to show similarities and differences. Such comprehensive approach consents to obtain a deeper knowledge of the organization of the Roman army and of the system of writing, authentication and archiving its documents.

    Description: L'esperienza della municipalizzazione delle case popolari nell'Italia giolittiana permette di focalizzare gli estremi di una parabola che approdò al riconoscimento delle problematiche abitative quale questione di interesse collettivo. La genesi dell'housing sociale si disperde pertanto nel complesso di iniziative che è stato possibile ricostruire nel supporto di uno straordinario corpus di documenti d'archivio, indagato nell'egida dei provvedimenti legislativi in materia di case popolari e municipalizzazione varati nel corso del 1903, vero e proprio termine spartiacque per gli sviluppi di tale vicenda. Sullo sfondo del combinato disposto scaturito dalle due normative si dipana infatti il filo rosso dell'intera narrazione, un viaggio che si muove attraverso frammenti di esperienze locali, riflessi di microstoria aggregati in un articolato mosaico fondato sul collante della municipalizzazione, lasciando trasparire il preludio di una fase di rottura in grado di liberare i prodromi dell'odierno welfare state.

    Description: This study analyses the crisis and transformations of theocracy as a political model in Europe in the first half of the 18th century. The work focuses on the transition from a positive and normative seventeenth-century consideration of theocracy, associated with the Jewish people, to its description in the 18th century as a universal, negative and primitive model. To this end, three authors are examined in their role of emblematic figures of this change, namely: Jacques Basnage, John Toland and Giambattista Vico. The study then highlights a radicalisation phase in mid-eighteenth-century France in the works by Nicolas Antoine Boulanger, and ends with the description of Boulanger’s theocracy in Diderot and d'Alembert’s Encyclopédie.

    Description: In principio era un uomo che interpretò la sua missione sulla terra nel senso di attrarre gli altri uomini fuori dai loro spazi (case, famiglie, attività, villaggi) e dal loro tempo (sto­rico) per condurli a sé verso altri spazi (ovunque egli andasse) in virtù dell’avvicendarsi di un altro tempo (escatologico). Quest’uomo fu condannato a morte e morì. A partire dai giorni immediatamente successivi alla sua creduta resurrezione, prende avvio il processo con cui altri uomini, in suo nome, si dedicano a ri-situare se stessi e l’uma­nità intera in quadri formali significativamente riconfigurati dall’evento cristico: luoghi al contempo mentali e sociali strutturati dalla duplice tensione tra gli spazi tradizionali del mondo e quelli peculiari della “chiesa”, tra il tempo presente della storia e quello della sua incipiente fine. In questo libro qualcosa come una nuova identità sociale dei credenti in Cristo è osservata nelle peripezie del suo costituirsi in relazione a quattro dei principali ambiti di soggettivazione del mondo antico: l’umanità, l’ethnos, la città, la scuola filosofica.

    Description: La ricezione di cultura tedesca in Italia, a partire dalla metà del diciottesimo secolo, prende corpo entro una rete sempre più ramificata di mediatori e strutture di mediazione. Accademie, università, case editrici e riviste segnano il perimetro entro il quale si dispiega l’attività di intellettuali animati da interessi molteplici, legati a una concezione transnazionale del proprio mestiere e spesso capaci di intercettare precocemente tendenze e movimenti ancora a uno stato iniziale, creando le condizioni per il loro incardinamento nella cultura italiana. Una circolazione di idee che accompagna lo sviluppo delle relazioni sociali e politiche fra i due Paesi, spesso fornendo incisivi strumenti di interpretazione per tensioni, conflitti e riavvicinamenti.

    Description: The theory of national characters sees an individual in every nation. Each individual has a body, a face, a character. The same goes for nations: every nation has a body (the land), a face (the fisionomy), a character. Kind or bad, active or passive, idle or diligent, feminine or masculine, every nation expresses a principle. A single principle, different from that of every other nation. What makes a nation possess a certain character? Authors are divided on this matter: according some it is the climate (both for the influence it exerts and for the reaction it provokes), according someone else it is history, and we find among the possible causes language, race, territory, religion, institutions, customs or a set of all (or part of) these elements. The volume examines this theme in Hippocrates, Aristotle, Bodin, Dubos, Kant, Leopardi, Cuoco, Michelet.

The peculiarity of parliamentarism lies in the fact that these two functions pass through the election of the Chamber of Parliament, to which the government is bound by a vote of confidence.     Description: L’Autunno caldo, segnato dalle grandi lotte per il rinnovo dei contratti di numerose categorie di lavoratori, costituisce il culmine di una stagione di mobilitazioni che modificò profondamente gli assetti economici e sociali in Italia. Oltre a evidenziare un diverso equilibrio di potere tra industriali e organizzazioni dei lavoratori, quel ciclo di lotte mise in primo piano una classe operaia giovane e combattiva, portatrice di rivendicazioni e di desideri volti a contrastare un «Miracolo» che non era alla portata di tutti. Il presente volume nasce dalle riflessioni del convegno «1969-2019 – 50 anni di Autunno caldo: tra storiografia, eredità e testimonianza» organizzato all’Université Grenoble Alpes e all’Université Paris Nanterre tra il 15 e il 18 ottobre 2019, e dà largo spazio sia a storici e specialisti affermati, che a giovani ricercatori impegnati nello studio della stagione di lotta degli anni Sessanta e Settanta italiani. I saggi ripercorrono i dibattitti interni alla Sinistra, la nascita dei gruppi extraparlamentari, le conquiste giuridiche dei lavoratori, prendendo anche in considerazione la circolazione delle idee e delle lotte al di là del triangolo industriale e al di fuori della fabbrica.     Description: A due anni dalla fine del Centenario della Prima guerra mondiale, questo volume si interroga sull’eredità del primo trauma storico del Novecento, momento integrante di una memoria collettiva costruitasi nel corso degli ultimi cento anni, nonché evento fondatore della storia italiana ed europea. Sul piano storico, la questione della mitizzazione della Grande Guerra e della sua strumentalizzazione in alcuni momenti cruciali della storia nazionale viene vagliata alla luce del recupero del suo valore ideologico e immaginario, funzionale ad un racconto condiviso. Espressione del sacrificio e del dovere di patria, la Grande Guerra pone ancora oggi la questione del nesso fra la storiografia e una “politica della memoria” che ha spesso inficiato la rivisitazione dell’evento. Sul piano culturale, letterario e artistico, le testimonianze, le riscritture o le creazioni sulla Grande Guerra invitano a riflettere sul senso veicolato dalle forme – memorie, romanzi, poesia, arti visive – scelte per reinterpretare quello scontro che è stato anche un’occasione di coesione sociale e di elaborazione dell’identità nazionale. Questo volume affronta le questioni più scottanti dell’immediato dopoguerra, la memoria lunga del conflitto tra eredità e distanza critica, le rivisitazioni delle ragioni del conflitto o dell’esperienza del fronte e infine la costruzione delle numerose memorie politiche e celebrative. La Grande Guerra riletta come cartina di tornasole della storia patria e del suo divenire.

    Description: Partendo dalla «lunga et grande guerra d’Italia» (Goro Dati) condotta nella prima metà del XV secolo da una mutevole coalizione di potentati contro Filippo Maria Visconti, il volume approfondisce ragioni e dinamiche del conflitto militare e ideologico tra Firenze e Milano - le cui radici risalgono al secolo precedente -, e lo apre all’intero contesto italiano, portando all’attenzione anche le ripercussioni che questa serie di scontri ebbe sui cambiamenti politici, diplomatici e culturali intercorsi nell’Italia del Rinascimento. Incardinato su un ricco corpus documentario e su una folta bibliografia, il lavoro si propone un duplice obiettivo: da un lato, offrire la ricostruzione e l’analisi degli avvenimenti inerenti alle origini di questo scontro antivisconteo, qui indagate attraverso un approccio interdisciplinare e multidisciplinare che stabilisce intersezioni tra ambiti di ricerca spesso ritenuti non così prossimi tra loro; dall’altro, mettere a disposizione una lettura più dilatata, permettendo di cogliere certe dinamiche e caratteristiche di quel «lungo Quattrocento» italiano che si prolunga fino alla metà del XVI secolo, così come le peculiarità di una lotta condotta con gli eserciti ma anche con gli ambasciatori e con le armi della retorica. Inserito nel solco della New Diplomatic History, lo sguardo è dunque cronologicamente e metodologicamente meno ristretto, e lo studio affronta in filigrana i problemi posti e le possibilità offerte dal fare oggi storia della diplomazia, sul piano tanto narrativo quanto epistemologico-disciplinare.

    Description: How do Torquato Tasso and Giovan Battista Marino react to the vigilant and normative context between the 16th and 17th centuries? Two evasive tactics designed to safeguard lewdness and enchantment in the poems are considered, starting from the relationship the two authors had with norms and rules: allegory on the one hand, and disguise on the other. Tasso's path is evolutionary and his opinion changes according to the internalisation of laws and values that lead to a re-evaluation of his initial opinions, while Marino transgresses the rules and uses typically defensive elements - such as allegory - overturning them and inventing a concealed offensive use. In this context, the paratextual allegories of Marino's Adonis, hitherto ill-considered by critics, are thus re-evaluated, and the Tasso route is reconsidered from a perspective that sees the two authors not as victims of a censorial system, but as active participants.

    Description: The archive of the Italian National Association of University Teachers sheds light on the little-known contribution a vanguard of university teachers gave to the reform process of Italian Universities, which started in 1968 after the failure of the Italian bill n. 2314. ANDU immediately identified itself in Giorgio Spini’s leadership: he was Professor of history at the Faculty of Education of the University of Florence, and he brought together union leadership and constant political and cultural work, which could show the problem with universities was a long-term matter. The student movement has been one of ANDU’s main dialogue partners from the beginning, and the association has always supported their initiatives, condemning the police repression and the closing of the academic authorities. In this context, the right to education becomes the primary goal of the university reform, not only for overcoming its classist nature, but also for significantly contributing to question the relations among classes and the balance of power in the Italian society.
