Im Mittelpunkt steht das Verhältnis der nachaugusteischen Epik zur früheren Tradition, d. h. zu maßgeblichen Vorgängern wie Homer, Vergil und Ovid. Die Selbstpositionierung der späteren Dichter in Bezug zum Kanon geht häufig mit der Bemühung einher, traditionelle Elemente neu zu konfigurieren: Durch Aussparung, Variation oder Übersteigerung gattungstypischer Aspekte treten ihre Werke in einen Dialog mit den früheren Epen und unterwandern dabei permanent die Erwartungshorizonte des Publikums. The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

    Description: In welcher Weise und in welchem Maß haben die Ergebnisse des Newtonschen Experiments der Farbbrechung Einfluss auf die Bildende Kunst des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts genommen? Diese Fragen stehen im Zentrum der Beiträge, welche die Malpraxis, die Theoriebildung zur Farbe, die neuen graphischen Reproduktionstechniken, die steigende Sehkompetenz, die Materialität von Farbe, die Verfeinerung der Darstellungsdetails und die Rolle optischer Instrumente untersuchen. Die Irritation im 18. Jahrhundert entstand aus der nicht eindeutigen Trennung in Licht- und Pigmentfarben. Für die Künstler hatte die alte Farbtrias - Blau, Rot, Gelb - weiterhin Bestand. Nichtsdestotrotz ist eine Verfeinerung des Sehens zu konstatieren, wie zunehmende Differenzierungskompetenz, die nicht nur neue graphische Techniken hervorbrachte, die im 19. Jahrhundert zur Fotographie führen sollten, sondern auch die Ästhetisierung verstärkte.     Description: Der Rifkrieg (1921-1926) in Nordmarokko ist von der deutschen Geschichtsschreibung nur wenig beachtet worden, und dies obwohl Deutschland in vielfältiger Weise an den Geschehnissen beteiligt war. Mohammed ben Abdelkrim el Khattabi alias Abdelkrim schaffte es, die zerstrittenen Rifkabylen zu vereinen und aus der Widerstandsbewegung gegen die spanischen Invasoren die 1923 proklamierte "Rif-Republik" erwachsen zu lassen. Dirk Sasse geht den deutschen, britischen und französischen Helfern Abdelkrims nach – Ärzten, Technikern usw. –, die zu einer schleichenden Verlängerung des Krieges beitrugen, aber auch bei der vorgesehenen Modernisierung des Landes mithelfen sollten. Sein Buch ist ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Dekolonisation und zur Geschichte der Vernetzung zwischen der außereuropäischen Bevölkerung und antikolonial eingestellten Sympathisanten in Europa.

    Description: Is our thinking and thus the worldview the same or language-specific for all people? This book is an unequivocal answer to this age-old question, which was already pursued by Wilhelm von Humboldt: Our worldview is characterized by the grammar of one's mother tongue (s), so that people perceive, verbalise and also remember events in a language-specific way. These basic insights are made possible for the first time by the experimental approach of psycholinguistic methods (such as eye-tracking) selected here. The influence of language on cognition also proves to be extremely relevant to language contact. As a result of the centuries-long language contact between German and Czech, the aspect system of Czech has changed in such a way that event conzeptualization proceeds both in Czech and in German, and that Czech is systematically different from other East and West Slavic languages.
    Description: Ist unser Denken und somit die Weltsicht für alle Menschen gleich oder sprachspezifisch? Auf diese uralte Fragestellung, der bereits Wilhelm von Humboldt nachgegangen ist, gibt dieses Buch eine eindeutig bejahende Antwort: Unsere Weltanschauung wird durch die Grammatik der eigenen Muttersprache(n) geprägt, sodass Menschen Ereignisse sprachspezifisch wahrnehmen, versprachlichen und auch erinnern. Diese grundlegenden Erkenntnisse sind durch den hier gewählten experimentellen Zugang psycholinguistischer Methoden (z.B. Eye-Tracking) erstmalig möglich.Der Einfluss von Sprache auf Kognition erweist sich darüber hinaus für Sprachkontakt als extrem relevant. Infolge des über Jahrhunderte andauernden Sprachkontakts zwischen dem Deutschen und Tschechischen hat sich das Aspekt-System des Tschechischen dahingehend geändert, dass die Ereigniskonzeptualisierung im Tschechischen wie im Deutschen verläuft und das Tschechische sich systematisch von anderen ost- und westslawischen Sprachen absetzt.

    Description: Title in English: Error Analysis in the Interlanguage of Czech and Slovak University Students of Spanish as a Second Language The monograph studies the written interlanguage in Spanish of a group of Czech and Slovak university students, focusing on analysis of their errors. The main purpose of this study is to find a pattern in these errors and to understand their evolution from the beginning to the end of the three-year bachelor program of Spanish Language and Literature at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic). For this objective we have analyzed a corpus of written texts compiled from 2014 to 2017 and we have classified all the lexical and morhosyntactical errors according to specific criteria, creating a “grammar of errors” on its own. The conclusions indicate that there are no significant differences between errors according to the linguistic groups. This is due to the fact that the majority of these errors show universal learning strategies that do not apply to just one linguistic group. However, the results also show a considerable influence of Czech and Slovak, especially in the lexical errors that occur due to interferences, faux amis and loans. Furthermore, Slovak students have a higher percentage of errors compared to Czech students at the end of their degree, mainly because the essays are longer. This is an outcome of Slovak students taking more risks when they write in Spanish, since they use more language and they choose more complex structures.

    Description: The struggle with the Donatists in North Africa dominated Augustine`s term of office as bishop. In order to disprove their views, in his writings not only did he employ theological arguments, he also referred to events which occurred at the time of the origins of the schism. Augustine`s aim was to use historical documents to prove that the Donatists had no right to claim that they represented the pure Church, free of "traditores". The Donatists reacted to this challenge by developing their own version of the history of the schism. This study draws on Augustine`s anti-Donatist writings to analyse and assess the historical arguments and views of both groups.

    Description: Im April 1909 verklagte Charlie Chaplin im Grafschaftsgericht von West Hartlepool, Nordostengland, den Schatzmeister einer Seemannsmission auf 14 Pfund und 10 Shilling, weil der ihm den vereinbarten Lohn und die Miete für einen Kinematographen und Filme nicht bezahlt hatte. Die Klage des gerade zwanzigjährigen, erst später als Filmschauspieler berühmt gewordenen Chaplin ist eine von mehreren tausend _Begegnungen vor Gericht_, die den Ausgangspunkt und die Grundlage für dieses Buch bilden. Aus Berichten und Aktennotizen über Auseinandersetzungen um Löhne, Kündigungen, Arbeitsunfälle und Vertragsbrüche entsteht eine neuartige und spannend zu lesende Geschichte des englischen Arbeitsrechts im Industriezeitalter. Willibald Steinmetz untersucht erstmals die Praxis der niederen Gerichte bei Arbeitsstreitigkeiten und lässt dabei nicht nur die Juristen, sondern auch die Laien, klagende und beklagte Arbeitnehmer und Arbeitgeber, zu Worte kommen. Klassenjustiz der Richter, hohe Kosten, undurchschaubare Prozeduren, peinliche Kreuzverhöre waren nur einige der Gründe, die englischen Arbeitnehmern wenig Chancen auf Erfolg vor Gericht gaben. Das Buch belegt, wie sehr die Struktur des englischen Rechts selbst dazu beitrug, dass die englischen Arbeitsbeziehungen seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert mehr und mehr zu einer rechtsfreien Zone wurden.

Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht.     Description: Das am 27. Februar 1953 unterzeichnete Londoner Schuldenabkommen stellte ein Novum in der Geschichte der internationalen Schuldenregelung dar. Mit ihm wurde die gigantische deutsche Auslandsverschuldung des privaten und öffentlichen Sektors aus der Vor- und Nachkriegszeit geregelt. Als Rechtsnachfolgerin des Deutschen Reiches übernahm die Bundesrepublik die Haftung für die gesamten Vorkriegsschulden des ehemaligen Reichs. Die langwierigen und von zahlreichen Schwierigkeiten durchzogenen Verhandlungen erreichten, dass das Schuldenabkommen dem tatsächlichen Leistungsvermögen der Bundesrepublik angepasst wurde. Mit dem Londoner Schuldenabkommen wurde die Kreditwürdigkeit der jungen Bundesrepublik wiederhergestellt; es war damit eine Conditio sine qua non für die Wiedergewinnung der Souveränität der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
