    Description: The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d’etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

    Description: Die Publikation ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des Lehrstuhls Geschichte der Militäruniversität des Verteidigungsministeriums der Russischen Föderation (Moskau), des Zentrums für Zeitgeschichte von Bildung und Wissenschaft der Universität Hannover und des Brandenburgischen Landeshauptarchivs (Potsdam). Erstmals wird hier ein Überblick über die im Staatsarchiv der Russischen Föderation in Moskau vorhandene Offene Serie der Befehle der Sowjetischen Militäradministration des Landes Brandenburg – SMAB – gegeben. Einleitend erfolgen quellenkritische und institutionsgeschichtliche Untersuchungen zur Thematik. Den Hauptteil bildet das Inventar der von der Verwaltung der SMAB zwischen 1945 und 1949 erlassenen Offenen Befehle. Auf Interesse dürfte ebenfalls die Übersicht über die von der SMAB erlassenen «Anweisungen» stoßen.

    Description: The book aims to reconstruct and analyze the disputes over the Polish-Jewish past and memory in public debates in Poland between 1985 and 2012, from the discussions about Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah, Jan Błoński’s essay The Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto, Jan Tomasz Gross’ books Neighbours, Fear and Golden Harvest, to the controversies surrounding the premiere of Władysław Pasikowski’s The Aftermath. The analysis includes the course and dynamics of the debates and, most importantly, the panorama of opinions revealed in the process. It embraces the debates held across the entire spectrum of the national press. The selection of press was not limited by the level of circulation or a subjective opinion of their value. The main intention was to reconstruct the widest possible variety of opinions that were revealed during the debates. Broad symbolic elites participated in the debates: people who exercised control over publicly accessible knowledge, legitimacy of beliefs and the content of public discourse.

    Description: The record books of the Order of Golden Fleece are the main source for the history of this important order of knighthood, which has been existing from the 15th century up to the present time. The here presented 4th record book covers the activities of the Order between 1477 and 1480 with the magnificent assembly in Bruges in spring 1478 as its climax: The Habsburgs Maximilian I as new Duke of Burgundy was installed as the new sovereign of the Order, symbolizing the beginning of a new era in the crisis-shaken Duchy of Burgundy. The volume contains the edition of the complete text (in 15th century French) with detailed commentary (in German) and a calendar of short abstracts of the letters issued by the Order or addressed to it. The edition of the record book with their exact details concerning the location of the meetings, participants, agenda, resolutions, elections and ceremonies present a hitherto unstudied source of the history of Order. The book also offers an interesting view of the critical period within the history of the Duchy Burgundy, in that because it also deals with questions of identity, social control as well as of loyalty and felony.
    Description: Das 4. Protokollbuch des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies berichtet in französischer Sprache über die Aktivitäten des Ordens zwischen 1477 und 1480. Höhepunkt dabei ist das prachtvolle Fest in Brügge im Frühjahr 1478: Hier wurde der neue Herzog von Burgund, der Habsburger Maximilian I., zum neuen Souverän eingesetzt, womit der Beginn einer neuen Ära im krisengeschüttelten Burgund symbolisiert werden sollte. Mit den präzisen Angaben über Ort der Versammlungen, Teilnehmer, Tagesordnungspunkte, Beschlüsse, Neuwahlen und Zeremonien bietet die Edition der Protokolle nicht nur eine bisher unbeachtete Quelle zur Ordensgeschichte, sondern eröffnet auch einen interessanten Blick auf die kritische Zeit Burgunds, denn sie berichten auch von Identität, Sozialkontrolle sowie von Treue und Verrat.

    The South Tyrol Question, 1866–2010 (2021)

    Description: South Tyrol is a small, mountainous area located in the central Alps. Despite its modest geographical size, it has come to represent a success story in the protection of ethnic minorities in Europe. When Austrian South Tyrol was given to Italy in 1919, about 200,000 German and Ladin speakers became Italian citizens overnight. Despite Italy’s attempts to Italianize the South Tyroleans, especially during the Fascist era from 1922 to 1943, they sought to maintain their traditions and language, culminating in violence in the 1960s. In 1972 South Tyrol finally gained geographical and cultural autonomy from Italy, leading to the ‘regional state’ of 2010. This book, drawing on the latest research in Italian and German, provides a fresh analysis of this dynamic and turbulent period of South Tyrolean and European history. The author provides new insights into the political and cultural evolution of the understanding of the region and the definition of its role within the European framework. In a broader sense, the study also analyses the shift in paradigms from historical nationalism to modern regionalism against the backdrop of European, global, national and local historical developments as well as the shaping of the distinct identities of its multilingual and multi-ethnic population.

    Description: Dieses Buch ist ein Versuch des Entgegenkommens und der Aufnahme eines Dialogs der Erinnerungen. Es geht dabei um die Menschen, die seit Jahrhunderten auf polnischem Boden gelebt hatten, die zur Schatzkammer der polnischen Kultur einen gewaltigen Beitrag geleistet hatten und die die deutsche Besatzungsmacht vernichtet hatte. Es ist eine kritische Abrechnung mit der Geschichte der polnisch-jüdischen Beziehungen in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs und nach dessen Ende, mit der polnischen Politik gegenüber dem Holocaust und mit der Erinnerung an diesen. Die Autoren vertreten verschiedene wissenschaftliche Disziplinen; sie stellen die Evolution der Erinnerungskultur der Polen dar und führen die Leser durch die Zeit der Existenz der Volksrepublik Polen (1945-1989) sowie des demokratischen Polen seit 1990. In diesem Buch begegnen sich erfahrene Autoren und Vertreter der jungen Generation, die sich mit dem Problem der Schuld, ihrer Verdrängung und der Ausfüllung der weißen Flecken der Geschichte auseinandersetzen und eine eigene Sprache für die Interpretation der Vergangenheit suchen. Sie analysieren die verschiedenen Träger der Erinnerung an die Juden (u. a. Museen, Filme und die schöne Literatur). Das Buch setzt ein Zeichen für eine neue Empfindsamkeit für die Vergangenheit und deren Bedeutung für das Verständnis der Gegenwart.

    Description: Als herausragendes Beispiel mittelalterlicher Bibliothekskataloge gilt der um 1475 angelegte Katalog der Erfurter Kartause. Für ihn entstand zeitgleich ein einführendes Prohemium longum. Das Prohemium longum ist ein wichtiger Text geistlicher Literatur und erweist sich als bedeutender Beitrag zum Verständnis kartäusischer Spiritualität am Ausgang des Mittelalters. Die vorliegende Arbeit liefert die erstmalige und vollständige Edition seines lateinischen Texts. Ergänzt wird diese mit Untersuchungen zu Fragen des Textverständnisses: Was weiss man über den Verfasser? Mit welcher Intention schrieb er? Ein Kapitel widmet sich der Kompilationsmethode, mit der das 〈I〉Prohemium〈/I〉 verfasst wurde, ein weiteres der Darstellungsweise. Schliesslich gehen drei umfangreiche Abschnitte zentralen Begriffen des Texts und deren zeitgenössischer Bewertung nach: 〈I〉ignorancia, theologia mistica〈/I〉 und 〈I〉lectio et studium〈/I〉.

    Description: European culture has been greatly influenced by the Christian Church and Greek and Roman culture. However, the peoples of Europe’s remote past, whom the Greeks, Romans, and their medieval heirs called the «barbarians», also left their mark. Closely examining ancient and medieval narratives and the codifications of laws, this thoughtfully conducted comparative study sheds light on the illiterate societies of the early Germanic and Slavic peoples. The picture that emerges is one of communities built on kinship, neighborly, and tribal relations, where decision making, judgement, and punishment were carried out collectively, and the distinction between the sacred and profane was unknown.

    Description: Die russische Mediävistik fand sich nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion unter neuen Bedingungen vor: Sowohl der staatliche Status der Wissenschaft, gebunden an die patriotistische und marxistische Propaganda, als auch die entgegengesetzte Rolle der geistigen Opposition wurden obsolet. Wider Erwarten hat die russische Mediävistik jedoch nicht ihre Attraktivität für Wissenschaftler und Studierende eingebüßt.     Description: Die Stadt Pritzwalk verfügt im Vergleich zu ihren Nachbarstädten in der Prignitz – außer Perleberg – über einen relativ umfänglichen und inhaltsreichen Bestand an Originalurkunden aus dem Hoch- und Spätmittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit. Trotz des verheerenden Stadtbrandes von 1821 haben sich 65 Einzelurkunden erhalten. Zu den Originalen tritt des weiteren eine erhebliche abschriftliche Überlieferung im Umfang von 55 Urkundentexten hinzu. Der Inhalt des gesamten Urkundenfonds wird hier erstmals in Form von 120 Regesten ausführlich wiedergegeben. In ihnen stehen neben Stadtrechtsbestätigungen – wie der ältesten von 1256 – Belehnungen des Landesherrn, Verträge und Städtebündnisse. Hinzu treten zahlreiche aussagekräftige Belege über die Entwicklung von Handwerk und Gewerbe in der Stadt. Bereits frühe Urkunden liegen für die Gewandschneider und Tuchmacher vor, in denen sich die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Stadt am Treffpunkt von Handelsstraßen aus dem Binnenland zu den Hansestädten an Nord- und Ostsee dokumentiert. Einen wesentlichen Teil bildet schließlich die urkundliche Überlieferung aus dem kirchlichen Bereich, wie der Nikolaikirche, von Kapellen und Hospitälern und der in der Stadt und der gesamten Prignitz wirksamen Kalandsbruderschaft.

    Description: The three-part work provides a first synthetic account of the history of the Polish intelligentsia from the days of its formation to World War I. Part one (1750–1831) traces the formation of the intelligentsia as a social class in the epoch of Enlightenment. It stresses the importance of the birth of bureaucratic institutions that created the demand for the educated stratum. It analyses the results of the collapse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 – the ominous event that transformed the political geography of East Central Europe. The work combines social and intellectual history, tracing both the formation of the intelligentsia as a social stratum and the forms of engagement of the intelligentsia in the public discourse. Thus, it offers a broad view of the group’s transformations which immensely influenced the course of the Polish history.

The long gestation of Polish narratives of heroism and sacrifice, explored in this book, might help to understand why the country still finds itself in a «mnemonic standoff» with Western Europe, which tends to favour imagining the war in a civil, post-Holocaust, human rights-oriented way. The specific focus of this book is the organized movement of war veterans and former prisoners of Nazi camps from the 1940s until the end of the 1960s, when the core narratives of war became well established.

Part two (1832-1864) analyses the growing importance of the intelligentsia in the epoch marked by the triumph of the Polish romanticism. The stress is put on the debates of the position of intelligentsia in the society, as well as on tensions between great romantic ideas and realities of everyday life. A substantial part deals with the genesis, outbreak and defeat as well as the consequences of the national uprising in 1863, whose preparation was to a high degree the work of the intelligentsia.     Description: By the second half of the 1940s, newly conquered nations of Central and Eastern Europe were expected to adjust multiple professions, including those related to the historical sciences, to the Soviet model. However, Marxism, soon to become the only acceptable methodology, was no longer understood in the same way as in Bolshevik Russia. Its Soviet variation borrowed heavily from the tradition of Russian historiography and the Russian national tradition. The variations formulated in the satellite countries were also less likely to break away from existing traditions than to revise and re-evaluate them, along with the perspectives on Russia’s role in the history of Central and Eastern Europe.
