    Description: During Antwerp's Golden Age, the city replaced Bruges as the primary trading hub of Western Europe. Antwerp transformed from a medium-sized Brabantine town to an unparalleled metropolis in the Low Countries with over 100.000 inhabitants. Although little is known regarding the impact of this transformation on the city's governance, Antwerp serves as an intriguing and exceptional case study. Unlike other trading metropolises such as sixteenth-century Lyon or seventeenth-century Amsterdam, where merchants increasingly occupied positions in the city council, this was not the case in Antwerp. This book ‘Macht in de Metropool’ reconstructs the compositions of Antwerp’s city council between 1400 and 1550. It examines the profile of the different aldermen and mayors and how they evolved over time. Furthermore, the research analyses the real estate investments of this group and their relationship with key groups in society such as the merchants, the nobility, and the central administration.

    Description: Yearbook for Dutch Book History, Volume 29/2022 Education and Pedagogy The Yearbook for Dutch Book History publishes articles in the Dutch and English language on all aspects of the book history of the Low Countries. The central theme of Volume 29 (2022) of the Yearbook is ‘Education and Pedagogy’. Contributions to the volume encompass a broad scope. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are discussed from the perspectives of Catholic and Protestant schoolbooks, and their roles in contemporary theological disputes, as well as the manner in which the Disaster Year (1672) was canonised in the Nieuwe Spiegel der Jeugd (New Mirror of Youth), which was repeatedly in print between 1674 and 1780. Later periods are treated by contributions detailing handbooks for artists in the nineteenth century and the illustrations of Cornelis Jetses in Bremer schoolbooks. Knowledge and illustrations of the clitoris stand at the heart of a contribution on biological education. The section of thematic articles is concluded by an interview with two publishers of schoolbooks who detail contemporary developments in the schoolbook market. Unrelated to the annual theme, the Yearbook also contains contributions on the printer Peter van Selow and his supposed Dutch background, the survival of editions of the Reformed Liturgy in the later sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and an article on so-called Neusboekjes (Nose-books), short comical works from the seventeenth and eighteenth century with pronounced satirical insights into Dutch politics and social norms.

    Description: This remarkablpe title describes the life of one of Holland's most remarkable figures: medical practitioner Van Dieren (1861-1940), Amsterdammer and prolific writer who caused quite a stir in his days. The author recounts the life and times of Van Dieren in the form of a series of narratives about the fights of this Dutch Don Quixote with his particular windmills. Individual chapters deal with his life, work, personal style, friendships and enmities, his discussions with psychoanalysts, socialists, scientists and above all of his tragic-comical failures. Unique source material is used to reconstruct this picture, such as the correspondence between Van Dieren and a large number of well-known Dutchmen, including novelist Van Eeden, Nobel laureate C.Eijkman, the philosopher Bolland, politician De Savornin Lohman, Queen Emma, and many others. Marginality and non-conformity are the key themes that run through the life of this observer which made him one of the most successful failures in Dutch history.

De inmiddels vergeten Amsterdamse arts/publicist Van Dieren (1861-1940) genoot in zijn tijd grote bekendheid. Toch is hij altijd een buitenstaander gebleven. In dit boek komen het leven en werk van deze Nederlandse Don Quichot ruimschoots aan bod. Hiervoor is geput uit uniek bronmateriaal, waaronder briefwisselingen tussen Van Dieren en een groot aantal bekende Nederlanders zoals Van Eeden, Verwey, Polak, Eijkman en koningin Emma. Marginaliteit en vervreemding zijn de leidende thema's in het leven van deze opvallende persoonlijkheid. Het maakte hem tot een van de succesvolste mislukkelingen uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis.

    Description: In 1869, Dutch military doctor Cornelis de Mooy invented the litter, ‘raderbaar’, a stretcher on wheels. It was a major improvement in several ways compared with the old brancards. It was comfortable for patients and only one hospital soldier was needed to move the wounded. Starting with the Aceh Wars (1873-1910), it became a huge medical success in the military as well as the civilian world. It was gradually replaced around the 1920s. The litter – and some other inventions he made – hugely reduced the wounded soldiers’ suffering and because of this De Mooy was praised by many as a great humanitarian, but in fact it was military efficiency that drove him. A better, swifter and less strenuous way of transporting the wounded was a means of improving military capabilities.

    Description: This article contains the personal account of Sergeant Reinder van de Put of the national police force, based on his correspondence after he was sent to the area affected by the 1953 North Sea flood. It first focuses on the unique letters and photographs that Reinder sent home from where he was deployed in Nieuw-Helvoet. These documents provide an insight into the national police’s work there and his personal experiences. The article describes what the national police faced one month on from the disaster and also provides an insight into the impact of the disaster on Reinder and his colleagues in Doornspijk, who were very close with each other – not only in how they stood together in solidarity but also how they supported each other.

    Description: This article investigates ‘nose books’ (neusboekjes) and their social functions in the Early Modern Low Countries. Nose books are short literary texts written in the form of joyful ordinances that can be found in bound volumes (Sammelbände). These volumes contain a number of separately printed works, such as almanacs, prognostications and popular texts, which were subsequently bound together. Unlike previous studies, which have largely considered nose books as purely entertaining, this article demonstrates that nose books were initially sold as a form of political satire. As such, they encouraged societal engagement. However, over the course of the eighteenth century, the political undertone of nose books was no longer part of people’s reading experiences. These later readers appreciated the parody of the official ordinance instead.

    Description: Het woord 'erfgoed' wordt tegenwoordig vooral toegepast in het begrippenpaar 'cultureel erfgoed'. Een ander gebruik van het woord 'erfgoed' richt zich juist op de immateriële betekenis van het woord. Dan gaat het onder meer om de geestelijke erfenis van een denker of kunstenaar. In die laatste betekenis heeft het begrip 'erfgoed' een langere geschiedenis dan in de eerste. In Erfgoed. De geschiedenis van een begrip worden de verschillende geschiedenissen van het begrip gereconstrueerd en geanalyseerd. Allereerst wordt aandacht besteed aan de juridische herkomst en ontwikkeling van het woord 'erfgoed'. Willem Frijhoff belicht de religieuze dimensie ervan. Andere auteurs richten zich op verwante begrippen, zoals 'monument' of 'oudheden'. Eco Haitsma Mulier besteedt aandacht aan het begrip 'erflaters', bekend geworden door de beroemde publicatie Erflaters van onze beschaving van Jan en Annie Romein (1938). Eric Ketelaar, Gerard Rooijakkers en anderen bespreken elk een bepaald werkingsveld binnen het cultureel erfgoed: archieven, literatuur, archeologie, volkskunde. De bundel wordt afgesloten met een beschouwing van Wessel Krul over de behoefte van sommigen zich af te zetten tegen de erfgoedgedachte of zelfs de drang om erfgoed te vernietigen.

    Description: In the 15th and 16th century a special institute developed in Flanders and Brabant: the chamber of rhetoric. Regular citizens started theater and lyricks, in small closed groups and in public. This study gives an overview of 227 chambers of rhetoric, the rhetorical culture in the Southern Netherlands and gives a fresh new look on the cultural history of the Netherlands.
    Description: In de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde zich in Vlaanderen en Brabant een bijzondere instituut: de rederijkerskamer. Gewone stedelingen legden zich in gildenverband toe op toneel en lyriek, zowel in besloten kring als publiekelijk, naar aanleiding van allerlei feestelijkheden. In deze studie wordt, vertrekkend van een repertorium van 227 rederijkerskamers, de rederijkerscultuur in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden in kaart gebracht. Het uitvoerige bronnenmateriaal biedt nieuwe, vaak verrassende inzichten in het ontstaan van de rederijkerscultuur, de sociale achtergrond van de rederijkers, de verhouding van de rederijkerskamers tot stad en vorst, de betrokkenheid in de Reformatie en de Opstand en, tenslotte, de veranderende functie in de zeventiende eeuw. Dit leidt ook tot een verfrissende kijk op de cultuurgeschiedenis van de Nederlanden. De auteur komt tot de conclusie dat zich in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden een bijzonder dynamische stedelijke cultuur vormde waarbinnen de basis werd gelegd voor het 'mirakel' van de Gouden Eeuw.

    Description: On 13 March 1908, the National Bureau for the Collection of Data on the Trade in Women and Girls was founded. The 47-year-old H.J.A. Simons de Ruyter was appointed National Police Commissioner. He proved to be the best person for the job owing to his passion for gathering and recording vital data, his knowledge of languages and his dedicated, helpful and generous personality. The Bureau and the police worked with women’s organisations to monitor activities and carry out checks at stations and ports where women and girls who could be exposed to a lewd lifestyle might be travelling. After legislation on morality was passed in 1911, the Bureau was given an additional task in 1914 to tackle trade in lewd publications. After the First World War erupted that year, there was not much more to do at the Bureau, which led Simons de Ruyter to support the immigration authorities in Amsterdam at his own request. This consisted mainly of finding accommodation, providing healthcare, food, clothing and financial assistance and helping to repatriate Belgian refugees.

    Description: In de zeventiende eeuw ging vrijwel iedere toneelvoorstelling gepaard met muziek. Er werd niet alleen gemusiceerd tussen de bedrijven, maar ook in het toneelstuk zelf. Muziek diende als achtergrond en versiering en was functioneel geïntegreerd in de handeling van het drama. Uit de rekeningen van de Amsterdamse Schouwburg blijkt dat men professionele musici in dienst had; daarnaast werd er gezongen en gedanst door de acteurs. In navolging van buitenlandse toneelmuziekstudies wordt in dit boek voor het eerst uitvoerig aandacht besteed aan de zeventiende-eeuwse theatermuziek in de Nederlanden. Centraal staat de toneeldichter Jan Harmensz Krul, die de muziek op vakkundige manier in zijn toneelstukken verweefde en die in 1634 de Amsterdamse Musyck-kamer oprichtte - een stichting die geheel gewijd was aan het samengaan van poëzie en muziek op het toneel. Aan de hand van vijf karakteristieke muzikale scènes uit zijn werk (de wachterscène, gevangenisscène, serenade, offerscène en slaapscène) wordt een beeld geschetst van de toenmalige Amsterdamse toneelmuziekpraktijk. Zulke muzikale scènes waren ook geliefd bij andere toneeldichters, in binnen- en buitenland. Zij hadden voor het publiek een signaalfunctie: het waren direct herkenbare situaties, ijkpunten in het drama, die standaard met muziek werden geassocieerd. Dichters varieerden hierop naar hartelust. Voor toneelschrijver en toeschouwer waren die stereotiepe muzikale scènes wat muziek was voor de personages in de toneelstukken: een effectief middel om te manipuleren - een perfecte verleiding, van oog, oor en hart.

    Description: De Nederlandse Opstand wordt gewoonlijk beschreven als een aaneenschakeling van politieke polarisering, religieuze radicalisering en militaire mobilisering. Toch vonden tot 1581 telkens opnieuw verzoeningspogingen plaats om deze escalatie te vermijden. Daarbij probeerden zowel edellieden als koninklijke en keizerlijke vertegenwoordigers het conflict op diplomatieke en verzoenende wijze te beslechten. Deze studie gaat over deze vredehandel. Welke verzoeningspogingen werden ondernomen? Waarom werden die telkens opnieuw ondernomen? En vooral, in welke mate konden deze toenaderingspogingen succes boeken? Op basis van archivalische en gedrukte bronnen brengt dit boek de redenen, modaliteiten en mogelijkheden van de vredesonderhandelingen tijdens de beginjaren van de Opstand in kaart. Vanuit de raak- en breekpunten tussen adellijke en Habsburgse verzoeningspogingen werpt dit boek een nieuw licht op de vraag waarom de onderhandelde hereniging met Filips II gedeeltelijk plaatsvond in 1579-1580 en zo een bijkomend motief creëerde voor het Plakkaat van Verlatinge in 1581.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

    Description: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought.

    Description: How to think philosophically about religion? The separation of church and state takes form in the nineteenth century. In public universities in the Netherlands, systematic, church-related theology is replaced by philosophy of religion. As a window on academic thinking about faith, Willem B. Drees, Leiden University's last professor of philosophy of religion, reads the work of his predecessors. They were mostly modernists, who expected to find their footing in the use of reason, in historical knowledge about religions, or in personal faith. After World War I, faith is perceived more as a wager, to trust that life is meaningful. Later, we see agnostic reticence that is religiously motivated, because God is always greater than we think, a mystery. And scholarly reticence, because in academic terms nothing definitive can be said about God. Do we thus see a development from modern certitude to charged silence?

Paul Schnabel schreef destijds in NRC Handelsblad over 'een lichtgevend proefschrift [...] een fysieke ervaring om te lezen'. Het'Amsterdam Academic Archive is een initiatief van Amsterdam University Press. In de serie verschijnen (populair-)wetenschappelijke publicaties die niet meer leverbaar zijn, maar waarnaar nog wel vraag is in binnen- en buitenland.

Weliswaar verschenen er de nodige vertalingen, maar producten van eigen bodem lijken nagenoeg non-existent. In deze inleidende studie wordt de stelling verdedigd dat deze situatie verandert tijdens de jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw. Aanvankelijk eigenen vooral Willem Frederik Hermans en Gerard van het Reve zich literaire strategieën en motieven uit de gotieke traditie toe, later volgen onder andere Hella Haasse, Helga Ruebsamen, Renate Dorrestein, Vonne van der Meer, Frans Kellendonk, Thomas Rosenboom en Herman Franke. De Nederlandse literatuur maakt in dit opzicht deel uit van een omvangrijke internationale trend.

Sommige van deze teksten verkondigen een levensvisie die sterk uitgaat van wat Coornhert 'het voncxken des Godlijcken Lichts' noemt: de rede, waaraan elk mens deel heeft en die elk mens in staat stelt ware kennis en een oprecht leven te krijgen. Deze auteurs leverden zo een belangrijke bijdrage aan een intellectueel en cultureel klimaat waarin later, in de zeventiende eeuw, radicale vormen van rationalisme konden ontstaan. Hun werk weerspiegelt een dynamisch mengsel van klassieke filosofie, volkstalig humanisme, verlicht christendom, intellectueel spiritualisme en pragmatische volksvroomheid. Hun uitgangspunten zijn de goedheid van de mens en de mogelijkheid van morele groei door redelijke kennis. Hun doel is het bereiken van volmaakt geluk.

    Description: The concept of empowerment is hard to miss in the field of social work, (health)care and welfare. Here, empowerment seems to stand for the autonomy and competence of the individual, who learns to make a positive contribution to society. In this book, Richard de Brabander traces the evolution of the notion of empowerment: whereas its roots can be found in the civil rights movement and its fight against oppression and injustice, nowadays the term is mostly used in strategies to make people adapt to dominant norms. While it should motivate us to resist patterns of exclusion and to create new ways of living, today that meaning seems to have turned into its opposite.

    Description: What makes a happy city? How can a city respond adequately and resiliently to a crisis disrupting civic society? Answers to these timeless questions differ through time. A Miracle of St Martin – Utrecht a Happy City tells the story of Utrecht and St Martin. At the occasion of Utrecht’s 900th anniversary as a free city, the book elucidates how the bond between Utrecht and its patron saint since the early Middle Ages inspired people to contribute to a happy city. The book is designed as a diptych, focusing first on St Martin’s Utrecht patronage around the year 900, when the settlement built within the walls of the former Roman castellum endured difficult times due to political and climatological troubles. Bishop Radbod (899/900-917) calls upon his fellow citizens to cultivate the commemoration of St Martin and to appeal to the saintly figure in times of hardship. The book includes a translation of Radbod’s Miracle Story of St Martin and unravels the secrets of his Gregorian office for the summer feast of St Martin’s Translation on July 4th. The second part of the book focuses on St Martin’s role in the multicultural twenty-first-century city of Utrecht. The popular St Martin’s Parade establishes a new celebration of the saint with music, street art and a parade of lights. Reflecting on this newly (re-)invented tradition we discover St Martin anew as a symbolic figure representing values of the inclusive city in past and present. The book is lavishly illustrated with images of St Martin and his cult in medieval and modern-day Utrecht.

    Nog steeds een mirakel? De legitimiteit van het poldermodel in de eenentwintigste eeuw (2021)

    Description: Het boek A Dutch Miracle van J. Visser en A. Hemerijck uit 1997 analyseerde de rol van onderhandelingen, coördinatie en consensus in het Nederlandse Poldermodel en stelde vast dat het cruciale factoren zijn geweest in het overkomen van de hoge werkloosheid van begin jaren '80 en de goede performance van de Nederlandse arbeidsmarkt in de jaren '90. Nu, bijna 20 jaar later, worden er steeds meer vragen gesteld bij zowel de legitimiteit als de functionaliteit van het Poldermodel. De representativiteit van de vakbonden is dalende en jongeren en het midden- en kleinbedrijf zien zich vaak niet vertegenwoordigd in de Polder die volgens critici op ondemocratische wijze deelbelangen in plaats van het algemeen belang vertegenwoordigt en noodzakelijke hervormingen op sociaaleconomisch gebied in de weg staat. Door differentiatie van belangen tussen sectoren of hoog en laag opgeleiden wordt het voor de sociale partners ook steeds moeilijker om met één stem te spreken en centrale afspraken te maken uit naam van alle betrokkenen. Ook is het voor de sociale partners moeilijker geworden afspraken te maken over sociale zekerheid en vervolgens een rol te spelen in de implementatie van deze afspraken, aangezien hun rol in de uitvoering van de sociale zekerheid is verminderd. Coördinatie van het algemene sociale zekerheidsbeleid en de afstemming met cao's en het arbeidsvoorwaardenbeleid zijn dus moeilijker zijn geworden. Het maken van centrale afspraken wordt verder beperkt door het groeiende belang van Europees beleid en afspraken in Euroverband met betrekking tot overheidsuitgaven, en door voortschrijdende globalisering en finacialisation. Deze ontwikkelingen en kritieken leiden dus tot serieuze vragen over de legitimiteit en functionaliteit het Poldermodel. In dit boek worden de hedendaagse legitimiteit en functionaliteit van het model vanuit verschillende hoeken en disciplines geanalyseerd om zo een beeld te vormen van het Poldermodel anno nu en van de mogelijke rol van het Poldermodel in de toekomst. De lessen van de verschillende hoofdstukken worden in de inleiding bij elkaar gebracht.

    Description: De Nederlandse samenleving heeft in de afgelopen anderhalve eeuw een diepgaande transitie doorgemaakt. In alle maatschappelijke sectoren zijn de resultaten van de snelle ontwikkeling van wetenschap en techniek doorgedrongen. Die ontwikkeling was alleen mogelijk door de inzet van professionals met een gedegen wetenschappelijke vorming. Zij hadden niet alleen een wetenschappelijke opleiding nodig, maar moesten gedurende hun beroepsuitoefening ook voortdurend gevoed worden met informatie uit wetenschap en praktijk om de voortgaande ontwikkelingen bij te houden en mede vorm te geven. Dit boek beschrijft hoe de redacties en de uitgevers van professionele tijdschriften zich hebben ingespannen om hun rol als informatiemakelaar goed te vervullen. Verder laat het zien hoe zij hun product voortdurend hebben aangepast aan de steeds hogere eisen van lezers wat betreft toegankelijkheid en vormgeving. Ten laatste is er aandacht voor de wijze waarop zij steeds de bedrijfseconomische voorwaarden hebben vervuld om de continuïteit van hun werk te verzekeren. Zonder deze professionele tijdschriften was Nederland niet geworden wat het nu is.

    Description: The present article is the result of the ongoing research of the project ‘The Dynamics of the Classical Reformed Liturgy in the Netherlands: Its Texts and their History’. This Liturgy is recorded in numerous psalm books and Bibles. The question arises how many editions of the Liturgy have not been preserved, or which are not known in publicly accessible collections. To this end, the article analyses a list of forty editions of the Liturgy from the period 1566-1634 that the theologian Gisbertus Voetius included in 1641 in a book entitled Catechisatie Over den Catechismus der Remonstranten. The article examines in particular the extent to which a tried and tested statistical analysis can be helpful in determining the value of this list. The article concludes that the data provided by Voetius not only provides information about a number of specific lost books, but, taking into account a number of uncertain factors, also offers an indication of the probable total number of editions containing the Liturgy that were originally published and are now untraceable.

    Description: This contribution consists of two interviews with experts from the Dutch educational publishing field. The first interviewee, Rivka Mooren, works as project editor Higher Education at Pearson Benelux. She explains how handbooks and digital learning platforms develop from the conceptual stage to publication. In light of international developments in higher education publishing, Mooren expects that the market will become fully digital, although in Europe more slowly than in the United States. Secondly, Regine Reincke considers the larger trends and developments in Dutch educational publishing. She works as Head of Product for ParnasSys, an administrative system for students that is widely used in Dutch primary schools. She arrived at this position after a career in educational publishing. This allows her to reflect on the role of technology in the classroom, and how it may enhance, but not replace, traditional classes and books.

Op basis van onderzoek naar ideeën, (literaire) praktijken en leden laat Lustige geesten zien dat de rederijkerskamers de Nederlandse variant waren van een vroegmoderne cultuur van publieke welsprekendheid, met het theater als quintessens. Rederijkers (rhetoriziens) drukten de intellectuele en maatschappelijke missies van hun kamers uit in het kernbegrip retorica (rhetorique) dat zowel verwees naar (utopische) idealen van burgerlijkheid als naar het toepassen van kennis (conste) in een geëngageerde cultuur. De noordelijke Nederlanden (vooral Holland en Zeeland) vormden met de zuidelijke (vooral Vlaanderen en Brabant) één rederijkerswereld van overlappende netwerken waarin via een actieve lees-, gespreks- en discussiecultuur internationale culturele trends lokaal en regionaal verwerkt werden. De middelen van publieke welsprekendheid (het schrijven en opvoeren van toneelspel, lied, gedicht) waren (intern) bedoeld om (in een ludieke en competitieve sfeer) de geest van jonge mannen uit gegoede families en middengroepen te vormen. Door de organisatie (extern) van opvoering in de lokale feestcultuur en op interlokale rederijkersfestivals functioneerden kamers als publicatiecentra voor hun beste schrijvers en performers. De rederijkers droegen zo bij aan de opkomst van een volkstalige geleerdencultuur en namen deel aan het publieke debat. Lustige geesten laat zo zien op welke manieren de sociale, institutionele en culturele elementen van de rederijkerscultuur de maatschappelijke invloed van de rederijkers bepaalden en hun bijdrage aan de opkomst van de (noordelijke) Nederlanden als Europees cultureel centrum. Lustige geesten wordt op unieke wijze aangevuld met de site "http://www.lustigegeesten.nl"〉www.lustigegeesten.nl. Deze site presenteert een proposografie van rederijkers - een database met biografietjes van alle bekende leden van de rederijkerskamers van Haarlem (1502-1650), Middelburg (1494-1650) en Den Haag (1494) - en een deel van de bestanden waarop de prosopografie en de analyses uit Lustige Geesten gebaseerd zijn.     Description: Some multiple-used city churches are neither fully in use by a faith community nor fully allocated to new forms of use, but are shared by both a (protestant) faith community and secular users. By sharing the church building, the diverse users and communities get in touch with each other. Eventual (slight) offenses between them can often be traced back to their respective relationships with the church building. Each church building has a specific history of the use of the building, its own architecture, a specific Protestant community, a chosen legal model and a particular profile for multiple use. Through the multiple use and the restorations, the pre-Reformation Catholic past is tangibly brought back. Those involved realise that they depend on each other in their efforts to keep the church building in good condition. The analysis of the interactions between users concentrates on the tangible aspects of the process of de-churching.

These crimes were committed by both those who had been convicted in the prewar period and previously ‘well-behaved’ citizens. Some of them felt forced to steal by the circumstances, others took advantage of the situation for their own benefit. How did suspects justify their acts? Did they consider theft during the occupation to be a crime, or not? And how did Dutch judges pass judgement concerning property crimes?     Description: The Cold War was a tense time. The Netherlands took precautions to protect its people from potential disasters, in particular nuclear threats. One crucial aspect of this was the establishment of the Civil Defence Corps. The organisation played a key role in setting up command stations and training centres, such as the one in Overvoorde, Rijswijk, near The Hague, which ran exercises and training to prepare people for possible disasters. From large practice ruins to advanced alarm systems, the complex was fully equipped to deal with a broad range of threats. Although the threat of a nuclear attack subsided and the Civil Defence was officially disbanded in 1985, these command stations retained their importance. Many of them have since been repurposed, from storage sites to museums. The bunkers in Overvoorde now serve as an educational centre under the management of Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre. By preserving these sites, we can ensure that future generations can learn from the past and the sacrifices that were made for their safety.

    Description: Although in recent years more and more attention has been paid to the clitoris, often little attention to the attitude towards her existence in the past. This article takes a look at the clitter's history and focuses on her appear in Dutch publications by (and for) doctors and teachers in the last 400 years. The conclusion is that the clitoris has never been completely forgotten or ignored, but that the ignorance about this female organ is due is due to cultural and social factors: a lack of attention to sexuality in general and for the female genitalia in particular. pass in the last decade this has been slowly changing: attention to the full anatomy of the clitoris is widely used for the first time combined with attention to the sexual experience of women within a framework in which she is equal to the man.
    Description: Hoewel er de laatste jaren steeds meer aandacht wordt besteed aan de clitoris, is vaak maar weinig oog voor de houding tegenover haar bestaan in het verleden. Dit artikel gaat in op de geschiedenis van de kittelaar en richt zich op haar voorkomen in Nederlandse publicaties van (en voor) medici en docenten in de laatste 400 jaar. De conclusie luidt dat de clitoris nooit volledig is vergeten of genegeerd, maar dat de onwetendheid over dit vrouwelijke orgaan te wijten is aan culturele en sociale factoren: een gebrek aan aandacht voor seksualiteit in het algemeen en voor de vrouwelijke geslachtsorganen in het bijzonder. Pas in het laatste decennium is dit langzaam aan het veranderen: aandacht voor de volledige anatomie van de clitoris wordt voor het eerst op grote schaal gecombineerd met aandacht voor de seksuele beleving van de vrouw binnen een kader waarin ze gelijkwaardig is aan de man.

Deze ‘fabulen’ werden bewerkt tot spelen van zinne waarin herkenbare liefdeskwesties aan de orde kwamen. Er zijn negen van deze zogeheten mythologisch- amoureuze spelen overgeleverd, geschreven en opgevoerd vanaf het einde van de vijftiende eeuw. De teksten maken duidelijk hoe de omgang met klassieke mythologie veranderde in de periode die de overgang vormt van middeleeuwen naar moderne tijd. Deze studie gaat in op de verhouding tot de oorspronkelijke teksten, op de dramaturgie en opvoering van de spelen en op de overlevering in handschrift en druk. De mythologie, heidens en fictioneel van aard, bood ruimte om te experimenteren met de uitbeelding van erotiek en emoties, terwijl de dramaturgie een didactisch kader vormde dat tegemoet kwam aan de sociale en ethische behoeften van die tijd. De mythologisch-amoureuze spelen droegen daarmee bij aan de introductie, verspreiding en acceptatie van antieke mythologie in de volkstalige cultuur en aan de ontwikkeling van een effectieve liefdesdidactiek.

What is new is the use of ethnological perspective by a number of the authors. This book is a collection of songs: messages from loved ones to joyous songs sung by groups at home and in the pub, or by farmers and servants whilst weeding, mowing and harvesting. At the same time religious melodies convey their desire for God or their distaste of the world.

    Description: In 1906, a new primer was published in the German city of Bremen: The Bremer Fibel. Its illustrations were created by Cornelis Jetses (1873-1955) one of the bestknown illustrators of teaching material in the Netherlands, his home country, in the first half of the twentieth century. This article focuses on these illustrations and shows how Jetses used his artistic skills to create images which fulfilled the demands of representatives of Reformed Pedagogy, a movement which emerged in Europe around 1900 and placed the child at the centre of education. By creating an overall design for the book that should help children develop a good aesthetic taste and by showing people, objects and situations that were part of the pupils’ everyday world, Cornelis Jetses played a part in establishing a child-oriented education in Bremen. Furthermore, this article also shows how the illustrator used artistic composition principles to create images that helped pupils to learn how to read words and decipher images.

    Description: Imitating models was the main early modern poetical principle. This study discusses Dutch novelistic prose translated from three European bestsellers: François de Bellesforest’s Histoires Tragiques (translation 1612), John Barclay’s Argenis (translations 1640-1681), and Antoine Torche’s Le Chien de Boulogne (translation 1681). Confirming Burke’s thesis of cultural hybridity the translations reflect balancing acts between accepting and resisting the contents and morals of their models. Only Torche’s Chien is transformed into a cultural translation, by adding a new Dutch narrative to its first chapters. Save this added Dutch narrative, all three bestsellers are translated docilely and accurately. This seems to indicate that novelistic prose served to make a profit, financing other commodities of the publishers. Nevertheless, at the same time translators Reinier Telle, Gerbrandt Bredero, Jan Glazemaker, and maybe Timotheus ten Hoorn, like canaries in coal mines, may have given their readers alarming signals on social behavior.
