    Description: The volume Contro Bernardino. Processi al maestro Amedeo Landi is the result of the discovery of unpublished documentation on the trials - only partly known - against the abacus master Amedeo Landi, who taught the Milanese merchants at the Broletto. This is an exceptional case not only because only one witness to the activity of the Milanese inquisitorial court in the Middle Ages (whose documentation has been entirely lost) was known until now, but also because of the role of the ecclesiastical court and its officials. The wealth of information and themes has prompted a team effort by the professors of the Department of Historical Studies to clarify the many aspects (political, religious, economic, documentary) of an event that shows the vitality of 15th-century Milan, in which the protagonist, the teacher Amedeo Landi, in an attempt to protect his students, clashes with the most important preacher of his time, Brother Bernardino of Siena, whose canonisation process is temporarily blocked precisely to shed light on the Milanese episode.

Si tratta di un caso eccezionale non solo perché finora si conosceva un solo testimone dell’attività del tribunale inquisitoriale milanese nel medioevo (la cui documentazione è andata interamente perduta), ma anche per il ruolo del tribunale ecclesiastico e dei suoi funzionari. La ricchezza delle informazioni e dei temi ha suggerito un lavoro d’équipe dei docenti del Dipartimento di studi storici per chiarire i molteplici aspetti (politici, religiosi, economici, documentari) di una vicenda che mostra la vitalità della Milano quattrocentesca, in cui il protagonista, il maestro Amedeo Landi, nel tentativo di tutelare i suoi studenti si scontra con il più importante predicatore del suo tempo, frate Bernardino da Siena, il cui processo di canonizzazione viene momentaneamente bloccato proprio per fare luce sull’episodio milanese.

    Description: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries.

    La ciudad de los monos Roberto Brenes Mesén, los católicos heredianos y el conflicto cultural de 1907 en Costa Rica (2021)

    Description: In 1907, the city of Heredia became the epicenter of the most important religious conflict experienced by Costa Rica in the 20th century. A complaint that the theory of evolution was being taught in the Lyceum (i.e. secondary school) of that city, triggered an increasingly intense confrontation between the Catholic parishioners and the circle of young radical intellectuals articulating around the writer and educator Roberto Brenes Mesén. In the course of this process, Costa Rican society, to the alarm of the government of Cleto González Víquez, was the scene of popular mobilizations in defense of the faith, excommunications and burning of impious texts, while Catholic morality was systematically questioned based on sexual abuse attributed to priests. For a moment, it seemed that the country had gone back in time, and that the ghosts of 1884 were present.

    Description: This book aims to study the history of the University of Tortosa from its canonical erection in 1600 to 1717, when it was transferred to Cervera. Through four chapters the place of the University of Tortosa in the set of the Universities of the Crown of Aragon is studied, through the proposopography of rectors, lecturers and graduates. It was a Convent-University run by the Order of Preachers that exclusively taught Philosophy and Theology. The documentary appendix includes the Statutes of the Colegio de San Matías and San Jaime, the Statutes of the University, as well as the list of graduates that has been preserved for the periods 1600-1623 and 1659-1717. Among them, there are numerous regular and secular clergymen from Valencia, Catalonia, Aragon and Mallorca.---Este libro pretende estudiar la historia de la Universidad de Tortosa desde su erección canónica en 1600 hasta 1717, año en el que fue transferida a Cervera. A través de cuatro capítulos, se estudia el lugar de la Universidad de Tortosa en el conjunto de las Universidades de la Corona de Aragón, mediante la proposopografía de rectores, lectores y graduados. Era un Convento-Universidad que estaba en manos de la Orden de Predicadores, y en el que se enseñaba exclusivamente Filosofía y Teología. El apéndice documental incluye los Estatutos del Colegio de San Matías y San Jaime, los Estatutos de la Universidad, así como la relación de los graduados que se ha conservado para los períodos 1600-1623 y 1659-1717.     Description: The court and court society in the Hispanic world (16th-18th centuries): The courtly world has emerged as a propitious intellectual and historiographical space for thinking and writing the history of early modernity. Ever since the renewal of the so-called ‘political history,’ but also after the perspective of cultural studies, the courtly has become the privileged scenario for the study of the political society of the Modern Age, starting from the analysis of the formation of the different social actors’ different political identities in dispute, as well as the tracking of hidden interests in decision-making in order to understand power groups or networks. Similarly, the courtly cannot but be thought of as that singular scenario and/or space of conjunction and indistinction between the political (public) and the economic (private), as well as a locus of identity formation and dispute. In this sense, the study of the Ancien Régime societies cannot ignore the courtly, which is a key element for understanding and analyzing one of the articulating elements of the globality of the European monarchies, particularly the Hispanic monarchy. As this work describes, this global perspective allows us to understand the importance and imprint of the courtly in America. Therefore, the aim is to analyze and understand the court and the courtly world from multiple perspectives. The articles that make up this work problematize the courtly from different geographical spaces, but above all from different intellectual concerns and preoccupations: princely and courtly education, the problem of the King’s favorite, the religious, the nobiliary, the place of the feminine in the court or, also, the materiality of the courtly texts and the materiality of the government of the monarchy from the court.

    Description: El mundo cortesano se ha erigido como un espacio intelectual e historiográfico propicio para pensar y escribir la historia de la primera modernidad. Desde la renovación de la denominada ‘historia política’, pero también desde los estudios culturales, lo cortesano ha devenido en el escenario privilegiado de estudio de la sociedad política de la Edad Moderna, partiendo de análisis de la conformación de las diferentes identidades políticas en disputa de los distintos actores sociales, como también del rastreo de intereses ocultos en las tomas de decisiones para comprender redes o grupos de poder. Asimismo, lo cortesano no puede dejar de pensarse como ese escenario y/o espacio singular de conjunción e indistinción entre lo político (público) y lo económico (privado), así como un locus de conformación y disputa identitaria. En este sentido, el estudio de las sociedades del Antiguo Régimen no puede obviar lo cortesano, máxima para comprender y analizar uno de los elementos articuladores de la globalidad de las monarquías europeas, singularmente de la monarquía hispánica. Esta perspectiva global nos permite comprender, como se realiza en esta obra, la importancia e impronta de lo cortesano en América. Por lo tanto, esta obra busca analizar y comprender la corte y el mundo cortesano desde múltiples perspectivas. Los artículos que conforman esta obra problematizan lo cortesano desde diversos espacios geográficos, pero sobre todo desde distintas inquietudes y preocupaciones intelectuales: la educación principesca y cortesana, el problema del valimiento, lo religioso, lo nobiliario, el lugar de lo femenino en la corte o, también, la materialidad de los textos cortesanos y la materialidad del gobierno de la monarquía desde la corte.

Official statistics in Belgium, 1795-1870, Nele Bracke unravels why and how the Belgian state and its predecessors organized and developed an official statistical apparatus in order to collect numerical information. The study captures the underlying objectives and structures, as well as the methods to compile statistics. Nele Bracke investigates the meaning and significance of government statistics in the 19th-century State and society. In Belgium, early social scientists established an internationally renowned ‘statistical system’ designed to collect information about the country, the people and the society. This ‘statistical system’ was built around the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ (statistical committee) and the production of demographic, economic and agricultural censuses. In the first part of the book, the author analyzes the institutional history of the ‘Commission centrale de Statistique’ and its predecessors. In the second part of the book, she studies the censuses.

    Description: El Diablo entra en el Paraíso, con la intención de apropiarse de la humanidad utilizando un nuevo y formidable instrumento: el proceso. Compuesto en el siglo XIV, transmitido como obra jurídica falsamente atribuida a Bartolo da Sassoferrato, el “Proceso entre el Diablo y la Virgen María” es un proceso simulado, en forma de diálogo, entre el Diablo, Cristo y la Virgen. Considerado como obra menor y casi ignorado por la historiografía, la obra constituye en realidad un extraordinario ejemplo de sincretismo cultural: el lenguaje de la teología sirve al derecho como fuente de legitimación, y a la inversa, la construcción escatológica y la misma teoría de la Salvación se injertan en una estructura jurídica. Desde esta perspectiva, aquí se vuelve a proponer el texto como un punto de observación ideal para aprehender las interacciones de una cultura poliédrica y compleja, suma de teatro y literatura, de derecho y teología, culta y popular.

    Description: With notary books we are not dealing with literary readings, but with abstracts of a mass of business manuscript agreements of various contents. The subject of this publication is the preserved parts of the third, ninth, and tenth notary fascicles from the Piran Branch Office of the Regional Archives of Koper. The fragments contain the models of documents created in the period 1284–1296. The authors of summaries in the preserved fragments of notary fascicles are Facina Grimaldi, Facina (Vitali?) and Francisscus de Malonbris.
    Description: Šesti zvezek piranskih notarskih knjig prinaša znanstveno-kritično objavo ohranjenih fragmentov treh notarskih knjig iz edinstvenega gradiva piranske izpostave Pokrajinskega arhiva Koper. Gre za dele tretje, devete in desete knjige. Prvi vsebuje 255, drugi 22 in tretji 422 skrčenih latinskih predlog notarskih listin iz razdobja 1284 do 1296. Vpisi v notarskih knjigah so pestrih vsebin in slikajo gospodarsko, družbeno in vsakdanje življenje v Piranu in okolici, nudijo podatke o prebivalstvu, njegovi etnični pripadnosti, o historični topografiji, pravni praksi itd. Kulturna dediščina notarskih knjig vpenja slovensko primorje v širši mediteranski prostor, ki ga je odlikovala praksa vodenja notarskih kodeksov. Objava vsebuje uvodno študijo, prepise izvirnikov, ki so opremljeni z datacijami, oznakami vsebin in opombami, ter imenski, pojmovni seznam in seznam vsebin vpisov. Ta pomagala olajšujejo uporabniku razumevanje in orientacijo v latinskem delu besedila. Uvodna študija, pojasnila k prepisom ter seznama pojmov in vsebin so – v želji spodbuditi širši krog uporabnikov k raziskavam preteklosti severozahodne Istre – prevedeni tudi v angleščino.

Esta obra ofrece una nueva perspectiva de las relaciones interreligiosas a través de una selección de estudios de carácter histórico, social, religioso o artístico de los problemas vividos entre las comunidades cristiana, musulmana y judía. Muestran cómo un autor, un artista, sea judío, musulmán o cristiano, describe o comprende las prácticas religiosas, las realidades culturales, las costumbres de sus oponentes y su evolución en el Medioevo. Estos estudios nos permiten comprender mejor los problemas de interrelación en el mundo actual, en este momento en que Europa vive cambios profundos ante la necesidad de integrar las masas de inmigrantes de diversas culturas y religiones en su propia realidad.

    Description: The Auerspergs [Turjaški] are among the rare noble families in the Slovenian territory with systematically preserved archives that date back to the Middle Ages. Most archival materials of the family, which was largely embedded in the framework of the Province of Carniola until the end of the 15th century, are presently kept in two private family archives: the Turjak Comital Fideicomiss Archives (Gräflich Auersperg'sches Fideikommisarchiv), first kept in the Turjak Castle until 1942 and now in the Carinthian Provincial Archives in Klagenfurt, and the Turjak Ducal Archives (Fürstlich Auersperg'sches Archiv), which were first moved to the Turjak Palace in Ljubljana and the Lower Austrian Lösensteinleiten Castle and finally ended up in the Viennese Haus-, Hof-, und Staatsarchiv.Turjaška knjiga listin 1 (1218–1400) [Turjak Book of Charters I (1218–1400)] contains 277 charters from the private archives of the Carniolan comital and ducal lines of the Auerspergs [Turjaški]. Published in their entirety, the charters are equipped with Slovenian regests and followed in the end by a comprehensive index of names and pictures of seals from the charters. With the publication of the Turjak charters, Slovenian historiography has gained an indispensable aid for the research of Slovenian medieval and modern history.
    Description: V Turjaški knjigi listin I (1218–1400) je objavljeno 277 listin iz zasebnih arhivov kranjske grofovske in knežje linije Turjaških (Auerspergov), ki so jih v sklopu grajskega arhiva do leta 1942 hranili na gradu Turjak, danes pa so shranjene izven slovenskega ozemlja. Listine so objavljene v celoti, opremljene so s slovenskimi regesti, ob koncu pa sledijo še obsežno imensko kazalo in slike pečatov z listin. Pripravljena izdaja turjaških listin sega do leta 1400 in je prvi del serije, v kateri bodo v končni fazi objavljene vse, tudi novoveške turjaške listine. Slovensko zgodovinopisje bo z objavo turjaških listin pridobilo nepogrešljiv pripomoček za raziskovanje slovenske srednjeveške in novoveške zgodovine.

    Description: El Bolsón es conocido internacionalmente como un pueblo paradisíaco, bucólico, mágico y natural, algo que, ante todo, favorece al mercado turístico e inmobiliario, que motoriza la economía local. Las disputas sociales y políticas que se expresan en el espacio público son presentadas como conflictos traídos desde afuera que amenazan la armonía reinante. Sin embargo, su historia está marcada por la conflictividad y la estigmatización sucesiva de diversas otredades, y esto configura la trama de relaciones de poder, las experiencias de los sujetos y los modos de representarlas. Amparada en el relativo aislamiento geográfico, esta narrativa insiste en la ajenidad del pueblo a los convulsionados años setenta. Frente a ello, esta investigación expone la dimensión y las modalidades que efectivamente revistió la represión política en El Bolsón entre 1974 y 1983, así como las memorias que circularon localmente en momentos claves de la lucha por los derechos humanos hasta el año 2012, cuando fue creado el primer sitio de memoria sobre la expresión local de la última dictadura.

    Description: "Ecclesiastical institutions and actors were essential for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. However, both legal historiography, due to its strong legalistic, state-centred imprint, and general historiography on colonial times, more inclined towards secular law, have only rarely discussed the contribution of ecclesiastical normativity to the formation of that normative texture which, in the historiographical tradition, has been called ‘derecho indiano’. In light of this situation, the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History has organised a series of seminars in different Latin American cities in order to offer an interdisciplinary forum dedicated to the research of ‘ecclesiastical normativities and institutions in Ibero-America’ between the 16th and 19th centuries. The present volume is the first in a series of publications that document the results of this cycle of seminars celebrated in Mexico City, Lima, Bogotá and São Paulo. The book, focusing on New Spain, is divided into five thematic parts. The first section presents investigations on canon law and moral theology that deal with characteristic aspects of multinormativity and the teaching of those disciplines in early modern times. The second section examines diocesan governance and ecclesiastical power in Mexico City and Puebla via statutes of the cathedral chapter, members of the ‘curia arzobispal’ and pertinent legal opinions. In the third section, the contributors reflect on the normativity and administration of sacraments, drawing on conciliar norms, treatises, pragmatic literature but as well on registers of baptisms and confessions. The fourth section deals with ethnic groups in courts of justice, both civil and ecclesiastic ones: indigenous people accused of ‘hechicería’ in a tribunal of Tlaxcala and Afro-Mexicans who started litigation in the archiepiscopal court of Mexico. The articles of the fifth section cover the topics of beatification, devotion and cultural expressions (music, images) from a normative perspective and extend the period of investigation to the 19th century. The articles on ecclesiastical institutions and normativities in New Spain collected in this volume propose new research fields for legal history and the history of the Church, which at the same time are relevant for social and cultural history. The editors’ purpose has been to present approaches that explore the relationship between different types of normativities, their local adaptations, the ties with global debates, the forms of solving conflicts, as well as the role of jurists, theologians and other actors. The topics discussed by the authors represented in this volume – who cultivate the disciplines of history, legal history, church history, ethnohistory, art history and the history of music – contribute to a better understanding of the normative religious universe in Spanish America."

Regular citizens started theater and lyricks, in small closed groups and in public. This study gives an overview of 227 chambers of rhetoric, the rhetorical culture in the Southern Netherlands and gives a fresh new look on the cultural history of the Netherlands.
    Description: In de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde zich in Vlaanderen en Brabant een bijzondere instituut: de rederijkerskamer. Gewone stedelingen legden zich in gildenverband toe op toneel en lyriek, zowel in besloten kring als publiekelijk, naar aanleiding van allerlei feestelijkheden. In deze studie wordt, vertrekkend van een repertorium van 227 rederijkerskamers, de rederijkerscultuur in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden in kaart gebracht. Het uitvoerige bronnenmateriaal biedt nieuwe, vaak verrassende inzichten in het ontstaan van de rederijkerscultuur, de sociale achtergrond van de rederijkers, de verhouding van de rederijkerskamers tot stad en vorst, de betrokkenheid in de Reformatie en de Opstand en, tenslotte, de veranderende functie in de zeventiende eeuw. Dit leidt ook tot een verfrissende kijk op de cultuurgeschiedenis van de Nederlanden. De auteur komt tot de conclusie dat zich in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden een bijzonder dynamische stedelijke cultuur vormde waarbinnen de basis werd gelegd voor het 'mirakel' van de Gouden Eeuw.

    Description: The PhD course in Mediaeval History of the University of Florence is one of the oldest in the Italian university circuit. Founded in 1983 by Girolamo Arnaldi, Elio Conti and Raoul Manselli, all the cycles of the courses were launched, achieving results of the greatest significance in the sphere of research. Over the years, about sixty young students and a couple of dozen teachers have given shape to a human and intellectual experience based on exchange and the acceptance of different points of view. Traced out in this book is a brief history of the first twenty years, rendering account of the activities fostered and the research carried out, and providing the scientific and bibliographic profiles of each member.

    Description: En la larga historia de Occidente, el derecho fue y sigue siendo el medio por excelencia para la construcción institucional. A partir de montajes hechos de palabras, proferidas por quien tiene el poder para hacerlo, el derecho tiene la singularidad de promover existencia a lo que ellas enuncian. Esta capacidad de artificio que contiene el discurso jurídico se remonta a la tradición latina, romana y medieval, que designaba al derecho como un arte, un saber sistemático y técnico que movilizaba su interpretación al servicio de la práctica. A partir de relevar la construcción técnica e histórica de ciertos artificios y operaciones jurídicas que tuvieron un lugar clave en el derecho europeo medieval y moderno y, que, en la actualidad, o bien ya no existen bajo forma jurídica o han cambiado radicalmente su sentido, proponemos una reflexión sobre la capacidad de intervención y producción de efectos del discurso jurídico. Focalizar en estos artificios del pasado nos ofrece una saludable distancia que hace más visibles las operaciones técnicas presentes en los textos a la vez que entrena la mirada para abordar las intervenciones del presente por fuera de todo efecto de naturalización.

    Description: This colloquium focuses on urban and princely space in the Duchy of Brabant in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The focus is on how territorial developments were perceived in different social milieus. After all, urban elites, the monarch and his entourage had different - but sometimes similar - opinions about what Brabant actually was and used various media to communicate their ideas about it. Administrative, narrative and cartographic sources, architecture, literature and art bear witness to this. The Belgian-Dutch "Stichting Colloquium De Brabantse Stad" organizes an international meeting every three years at which various aspects of the history of the cities and of urban life in the old Duchy of Brabant are examined. The colloquium is organized alternately in the provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, North Brabant and in the Brussels Capital Region. The XIXth colloquium, taking place in Brussels at the Université Saint-Louis, is being organized in cooperation with the NWO research project Imagining a territory.

    Description: The purpose of this book is to explain the process of establishing the seven Spanish grand colleges where a large part of the State and the Church elite servants were educated in the 16th and 17th centuries. To this end those colleges are considered, first, in the framework of the European collegiate movement, before placing them in the Spanish one. A study of the institutional system of those foundations follows and, in the process, several given truths are challenged. The book closes with an analysis of the careers of the individuals educated in those ‘schools’ for high bureaucrats – labelled as ‘schools of empire’ – which, with the time, became a power within the State thus causing its disappearance.---El propósito de esta obra es explicar el proceso de creación de los siete colegios mayores, en los que se formó gran parte de la elite que gestionó las principales instituciones del Estado y de la Iglesia en la España de los siglos XVI y XVII. Para ello, se sitúan primero los colegios en el contexto general del movimiento colegial europeo, antes de considerar específicamente el movimiento colegial español. Se describe después el sistema institucional de esas fundaciones, consideradas como un todo, y se cuestionan algunos planteamientos generalmente aceptados en torno a las mismas. En la tercera parte se analiza la proyección profesional de los colegiales formados en esas “escuelas” de formación de altos burócratas –a las que se denomina “escuelas de imperio”– los cuales, con el tiempo, acabarán convirtiéndose en una potencia dentro del Estado, provocando así su desaparición.

    Description: The work is a critical edition of the preserved fragments of five notary codices from Piran (1289–1305) with notes made by the notary Dominicus Petenarius. Notaries entered into notary codices the essential features of business transactions in stenographic form, specific writing and simple Latin. This is a valuable type of sources for the study of medieval and later history. The entries portray the economic and social life of cities and their surroundings, their administration, judicial system, everyday life, population development, urban image, as well as culture and arts, all of which serve the purposes of research conducted by experts in various fields. The edition is equipped with a standard critical apparatus and an accompanying study which is also translated into English. The main part of the text encompasses the transliteration of the manuscript comprising 518 agreements with different contents. Each is marked with a successive number, defined with regard to its content and dated. The specific features of the original and inconsistencies in writing are described in notes. The work comes with an index of names, a subject index and a list of entries in which each entry is marked with the original annotation of the page in the original, date, type of contents, short summary of the contents and the page in the publication.

Fragmenti petih notarskih sešitkov, ki so predmet znanstvenokritične objave, vsebujejo kratke povzetke poslovnih dogovorov Pirančanov v poldrugem desetletju pred sedmimi stoletji. Zapisi so objektivni in zanesljivi, razkrivajo pa nekdanjo poslovno prakso od trgovskih družb, prek trgovanja na kredit, posojanja denarja, udinjanja pri delodajalcu, prodaje ali oddaje nepremičnin v zakup ipd.

The Doctrinairism, professed by a relevant part of the deputies in the Cortes, and by most of the governments, was the most important influence. All of them defended a model similar to the French Charte constitutionnelle of June 4, 1814; consequently, they vehemently opposed the single-chambered system, the suspensive veto and the preeminence of the Legislative branch, among other characteristics of the 1812 Constitution. This book aims to confront the ideas of the Constitution and the constitutional types of the two main ramifications of Spanish liberalism through the analysis of General and deputy Rafael del Riego cases, an eloquent expression of that political struggle.

    Description: La instauración del segundo periodo constitucional en 1820 venía precedida por alternativas a la Constitución restaurada, las más importantes de las cuales estaban influidas por el moderantismo y doctrinarismo que profesaban una parte relevante de diputados en las Cortes inauguradas en junio de ese año y la mayoría de los Gobiernos del periodo. Todos ellos defendieron un modelo similar a la Charte constitutionnelle francesa de 4 de junio de 1814 y, en consecuencia, se opusieron con vehemencia al sistema monocameral, al veto suspensivo y a la preeminencia del Legislativo entre otras características que ofrecía la de 1812. Este libro tiene por objeto la confrontación de las ideas de constitución y los tipos constitucionales de las dos principales ramas del liberalismo a través del análisis de los casos que afectaron al general y diputado exaltado Rafael del Riego.     Description: This book highlights the diverse roles of the humanities in the history of the Swedish welfare society. This society has often been seen as dominated by an instrumental view of knowledge that rewarded the social sciences, natural sciences and technology, but the contributions in this book show the significant role that the humanities played in the Swedish welfare state. Various forms of humanistic knowledge and knowledge actors were part of large networks and left a clear mark on the public sphere and society at large. A narrative of the marginalization and crisis of the humanities in the postwar period must therefore be problematized. This edited volume brings together some twenty scholars from a number of humanities disciplines (history, history of ideas, media history, literary studies, archaeology, education, etc.). Much of the current research on the history of the humanities conducted in Sweden today is brought together here and put in relation to international discussions in fields such as history of humanities, history of knowledge, etc. The book is a sibling to the monograph Humanister i offentligheten, which was published in 2022.

    Description: With this rich anthology of sources, most of which are made available here for the first time, Michele Mancino and Giovanni Romeo add another element to the research project that began with their recent book (Clero criminale. L’onore della Chiesa e i delitti degli ecclesiastici nell’Italia della Controriforma, Laterza, Roma-Bari, 2013, 4th ed.). The two parts document from a range of perspectives the way in which the Tridentine project of combating the common crimes of the clergy was undone before the end of the sixteenth century. Instead, the Roman curia was mainly concerned with enforcing the right of delinquent priests to be judged only by ecclesiastical tribunals, a strategy intended to defend the honor of the clergy that was followed persistently over the long term. The material presented here describes a previously unknown historical precedent for the recent revelations about the treatment of pedophile priests.

Boxer, antiguo espía británico y profesor de historia colonial portuguesa y holandesa, publicó un artículo donde describía un bello códice que él mismo había adquirido en una subasta. El hoy denominado Códice Boxer, creado bajo el gobierno de Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas (1590-1593) en la colonia española de Filipinas, es un documento absolutamente excepcional tanto por su contenido textual como por sus bellas ilustraciones en color, probablemente realizadas por un artista chino del parián de Manila. En sus páginas reúne veintidós jornadas, derroteros y, sobre todo, relaciones etnográficas de procedencia diversa, la mayoría escritos originalmente en castellano, y otros traducidos del portugués o del chino. Entre textos e imágenes, ofrece información sobre los pueblos nativos de Guam y Filipinas, el sudeste asiático (Borney, Maluku, Java, Aceh, Patani, Siam, Nueva Guinea), las costas de Champa y Vietnam, el norte de Formosa (Taiwán), Japón y China. El Códice, sin embargo, plantea innumerables interrogantes acerca de su autoría, su cronología precisa, sus finalidades y su carácter culturalmente híbrido.     Description: The book illustrates the reconstruction of the system of granting Neapolitan citizenship during the sixteenth century. In particular, the role played by the ‘Regia Camera della Sommaria’, the highest tax magistrature of the Kingdom of Naples, in the evaluation of requests and in the assignment of the citizenship licenses, which allowed access to the substantial tax and jurisdictional privileges of the capital city. The policy of the Spanish government with respect to these privileges is based on prudence and attention to the political and social balance of a fundamental and complex capital as Naples is. The ‘Sommaria’, however, manages in establishing a system of control and government of privileges, which makes the Neapolitan citizenship for a large part a product of the state; also subtracting expertise in the field to the city's municipal government.

    Description: Die schon zu Lebzeiten durch Anhänger und Unterstützer begonnene Mythisierung Friedrichs II. und seines Enkels Konradin hat sich im Laufe der Zeit nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch in Süditalien mit überraschenden Folgen lebendig erhalten. So war nämlich die Erinnerung an Konradin in dem kleinen Ort Aliano in der Provinz Matera (Basilikata) selbst zu Zeiten Carlo Levis, der dort während des Faschismus im Exil lebte, fassbar – man sprach vom letzten Staufer wie von einem Nationalhelden und betrauerte noch immer seinen Tod. Abgesehen vom menschlichen Mitgefühl, das der Tod eines Jünglings in besonderem Maße weckt, gibt der unglückliche Versuch Konradins, seine Erbansprüche auf das Königreich Sizilien geltend zu machen, immer wieder Anlass zu historiografischer Debatte. Denn er ermöglicht einen Einblick in die politischen Prozesse, die zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht nur im Gebiet des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, zu dem Mittel- und Norditalien gehörten, vonstattengingen, sondern auch in den mit dem Reich interagierenden politischen Formationen, darunter das Königreich Sizilien. Der Band ist das Resultat einer Konferenz, die anlässlich des 750. Jahrestages der Hinrichtung Konradins und seiner adligen Gefährten 2018 an der Universität Neapel Federico II gehalten wurde.
    Description: La mitizzazione di Federico II e del nipote Corradino, iniziata quando erano ancora in vita ad opera dei loro sostenitori e aderenti, si è mantenuta inalterata nel corso del tempo sia in Germania sia Italia meridionale, e qui con esiti sorprendenti. Corradino era infatti ricordato nei primi decenni del Novecento nel piccolo centro di Aliano in provincia di Matera, dove Carlo Levi visse durante il Fascismo da confinato politico e dove dell’ultimo Svevo si parlava come di un eroe nazionale e si piangeva la morte. A prescindere dalla pietà umana, che scatta soprattutto quando la morte colpisce un adolescente, lo sfortunato tentativo di Corradino di far valere i suoi diritti ereditari sul Regno di Sicilia continua ad alimentare il dibattito storiografico, perché fornisce uno spiraglio di intelligibilità sui processi politici allora in corso non solo nell’area dell’Impero romano-germanico, di cui faceva parte l’Italia centro-settentrionale, ma anche in quella delle formazioni politiche che con esso si trovarono di volta in volta ad interagire, tra cui il Regno di Sicilia. Il volume è frutto del convegno tenutosi nel 2018 presso l’Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in occasione del 750° anniversario dell’esecuzione di Corradino e dei suoi nobili compagni.

    Description: The subject of this publication is a critical edition of the preserved parts of the eleventh, twelfth, fourteenth, and sixteenth notary books from the Piran Branch Office of the Regional Archives of Koper. With notary books we are not dealing with literary readings, but with abstracts of a mass of business manuscript agreements of various contents. The fragments contain the models of documents created in the period 1301–1320 (1321). The writer of summaries in the preserved fragments of notary fascicle No. 11 was Almericus, while the notary Perinus Appolonii kept records of business transactions in codex No. 15. The writers of other fragments are not known.
    Description: Znanstveno-kritična objava fragmentov notarskih knjig enote Piran Pokrajinskega arhiva Koper iz let 1301–1320 /1321/ kot sedmi, zadnji zvezek zaključuje enega od segmentov programa edicij virov za slovensko zgodovino, sprejetega leta 1972. Zajema pet rokopisov: enajstega, dvanajstega, štirinajstega, petnajstega in šestnajstega ter dodatnega neoštevilčenega, ki skupaj beležijo 287 latinskih predlog notarskih listin. Gre za dogovore v zvezi z zadolževanjem, poslovanjem z nepremičninami, za reševanje sporov, sklepanje dogovorov o delu, za ženitne dogovore, številne oporoke itd. Iz zapisov je razvidno gospodarsko, družbeno in vsakdanje življenje v nekdanjem Piranu in njegovi okolici. Objava vsebuje uvodno študijo, prepise izvirnikov s pojasnili, imenski in pojmovni seznam ter seznam vsebin vpisov. Znanstveno-kritični aparat je slovensko-angleški, seznam pojmov pa je zasnovan kot trojezični latinsko-slovensko-angleški slovar. Delo nudi podatkovno osnovo za interdisciplinarne (zgodovinske, umetnostnozgodovinske, jezikoslovne, pravnozgodovinske, urbanistične, historično-geografske) in primerjalne raziskave mediteranskih mest srednjega veka.

    Description: This book contains the proceedings of the first international conference organised by the Centro di Studi sulla civiltà comunale of the University of Florence, and offers a fine overview of the contribution made by international historiography to the history of the Italian Comunes.     Description: In April 1479, the communities of the marquisate of Mantua pronounced for the first time a general oath of fealty to Federico Gonzaga, the third marquis, inaugurating a custom that was to be repeated with relative regularity in the following decades every time a Prince died. It was a practice which was fairly new for the Gonzago marquisate, at least in this capillary and general extension to the entire body of the State. The significance of an innovation of this kind deserves attention, as do the genesis and the partial forms that preceded this mature expression. This book comprises an edition of the entire related documentary corpus, complete with photographic reproductions of the individual documents, and preceded by a substantial introduction in which the event is described, placed in context and interpreted from various points of view.
    Description: Le comunità del marchesato di Mantova pronunciarono per la prima volta un generale giuramento di fedeltà a Federico Gonzaga terzo marchese nell'aprile 1479, inaugurando un uso che si sarebbe ripetuto con relativa continuità nei decenni successivi ad ogni morte del principe. Si tratta di una pratica relativamente nuova per il marchesato gonzaghesco, almeno in questa capillare e generale estensione all'intero corpo dello stato: il significato di una innovazione di questo genere merita attenzione, come anche la genesi e le forme parziali che hanno preceduto questa forma matura. In questo volume si dà l'edizione dell'intero corpus documentario relativo, integrata dalla riproduzione fotografica dei singoli documenti, e preceduta da una corposa introduzione che punta a inserire il case-study mantovano nel recente, articolato dibattito intorno alla costruzione e alla crescita di linguaggi politici diversificati nel tardo medioevo italiano.

    Description: I decenni che precedettero la terribile epidemia di “Peste Nera” del 1348 in Europa sono stati a lungo presentati univocamente come un periodo di gravi difficoltà, dovute all’instabilità politica e, soprattutto, all’eccessiva crescita della popolazione rispetto alle risorse agricole, il cui aumento era frenato dalle scarse tecnologie disponibili. Questa ricostruzione è stata oggetto negli ultimi anni di una profonda revisione, con una rinnovata attenzione allo sviluppo della commercializzazione, anche a lungo raggio, dei prodotti alimentari e agli investimenti nelle campagne, rivelatisi tutt’altro che ininfluenti. Rispetto alle grandi panoramiche finora dominanti nel dibattito, questo volume presenta una serrata analisi di una realtà regionale – la Lombardia dalla fine del XIII secolo alla metà del XIV – considerata sotto molteplici punti di vista, dalla storia rurale a quella delle manifatture, dei prestiti e dei commerci, dagli aspetti fiscali e monetari a quelli militari e dell’assistenza. Ne esce un ritratto articolato, che senza negare gli elementi di difficoltà, mette in luce la sostanziale “tenuta” del sistema produttivo e sociale lombardo prima delle grandi epidemie del 1348 e del 1361.

    Description: Demoperfectocracy was the word used by the famous Costa Rican writer, Yolanda Oreamuno, to refer to the Costa Rican political system of the 1930s. The ironic spirit of the term was not accidental: at the time, various intellectuals and politicians doubted that Costa Rica was a democracy, an approach that was recovered and emphasized, starting in the 1980s, by different social researchers. The perspective that guides this book is very different: it stems from the fact that, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Costa Rica underwent a decisive transition towards a pre-reformed democracy, in whose course periodic and competitive elections became the nexus fundamental between popular demands and public policies. The long-term result of this connection was a socially oriented political system.

    Description: The book is a text-critical edition of Brixen urbaria for the diocesan estates in Upper Carniola (Bled seigniory) with a comprehensive scholarly commentary and concise presentation of the historical development of the Bled seigniory throughout the Middle Ages. The published sources, offering a rich insight into the property, economic and social conditions of the Middle Ages, belong to the earliest accounts relating to agrarian economy and land property in the Slovenian territory and have, as such, long attracted the interest of the historian profession. This publication, having already been planned decades ago by renown Slovenian historians such as Milko Kos and Pavle Blaznik, naturally completes a series of publications of urbaria for the complexes of ecclesiastical (diocesan) land estates in the territory of Slovenia.
    Description: Delo prinaša tekstnokritično izdajo briksenskih urbarjev za škofijsko posest na Gorenjskem (gospostvo Bled) z obsežnim strokovnim komentarjem in s strnjenim prikazom zgodovinskega razvoja blejskega gospostva v srednjem veku. Objavljeni viri se uvrščajo med najzgodnejša pričevanja agrarno-gospodarskega in zemljiško-posestnega značaja v slovenskem prostoru in kot taki že dolgo zbujajo zanimanje zgodovinske stroke. Pričujoča objava, ki je bila načrtovana že pred desetletji, z njo pa so bili povezani priznani slovenski zgodovinarji, kot sta Milko Kos in Pavle Blaznik, organsko zaključuje serijo objav urbarjev za obsežne komplekse cerkvene (škofijske) posesti na ozemlju Slovenije.

    Description: "The 20th century is sometimes said to be the century of the family farm. Although the countryside changed fundamentally, the farming family - consisting of husband, wife and children - is often seen as intact. However, all farms were not driven by families of the traditional type. One alternative was that two or more of the children took over the farm together, continued to live in the same household and remained unmarried. But how common were such sibling farms? How did they work and what were the motives behind the siblings' choice to live together? Based on household analyzes, government reports and interviews, historian Martin Dackling in Instead of marriage sketches the history of the sibling farms. He shows that they were neither unusual nor remains of an older peasant society. From the beginning of the 19th century, it became increasingly common for brothers and sisters to take over the farm together and in the 1930s and 1940s sibling farms were a common feature of Swedish countryside. However, after 1950 they became increasingly unusual. The book discusses why the sibling farms arose and Dackling points to cultural, social and economic explanations. An important circumstance was also that most of the siblings remained unmarried. Love relations were not missing, but marriage was difficult to combine with siblings living in the same household. Love relations and sibling relations were in a complicated correlation with each other, and on many farms, living with siblings became an alternative to marriage. "

    Description: Livio Odescalchi (1652–1713), nephew of Innocent XI, paid the price in his youth for the pope’s anti-nepotism policy, who chose to deny him any official position. During the same period, Livio had to submit to the oppressive control of his uncle, his testamentary guardian – an unhappy situation that, at the time, caused him to be considered a symbol of misfortune. In spite of this, the young man was able to lay the foundations for a strategy of economic and social ascent that would later bear fruit. After the death of Innocent XI, a period of compensation began, built on the accumulation of honours and possessions, financial investments, commissions and art trades, patronage, social celebrations, and international networks. This book, based on Roberto Fiorentini’s doctoral thesis (Aprilia 1987 – Washington 2019), examines both phases of Livio Odescalchi’s life, analysing them in the light of a considerable quantity of archival documents, some of which are completely unpublished.

Il volume, frutto della tesi di dottorato di Roberto Fiorentini (Aprilia 1987–Washington 2019), prende in esame ambedue le fasi della vita di Livio Odescalchi, analizzandole alla luce di una notevole quantità di documenti d’archivio, una parte dei quali completamente inediti.

Nach dem Tod Innozenz’ XI. begann eine Zeit der Kompensation durch die Anhäufung von Ehrungen und Besitztümern, finanzielle Investitionen, Aufträge und Kunsthandel, Mäzenatentum, Feste und internationale Netzwerke.     Description: The Low Countries in the early Middle Ages. Christianity is on the rise, partly due to the efforts of missionaries such as Willibrord and Boniface. Yet the process of Christianisation is laborious. This is well illustrated in Vita Radbodi, a tenth-century Latin biography of bishop Radboud of Utrecht (c. 850-917). In it, Radboud is depicted as a pious, serious and studious young man, who is called to the episcopate after many years of study. As bishop, he encounters problems with unbelieving Frisians and ferocious Normans. Thus, he is forced to move his seat from Utrecht to the safer Deventer. The text offers a positive portrait of Radboud as a holy role model figure. He acts energetically, performs miracles and, of course, also possesses prophetic gifts. For instance, he predicts his own end well in time. The text ends with a vision of the Mother of God and Radboud's death and burial. Some twenty years after the first edition by Peter Nissen and Vincent Hunink, the text is now being reissued on the occasion of Radboud University's centenary.

    Description: "Riksäpplet deals with a shipwreck that has a neglected position in the grand narrative of the history of the Swedish navy. The story of its destiny and the missing accounts in scholarly and popular works in history says something about heritage processes within Swedish maritime archaeology. On 5 June 1676 Riksäpplet came loose and adrift from its moorings outside Dalarö Sea fortress. The hull struck a rock and sank. The loss was considered both ignominious and embarrassing and the ship’s fate has been overlooked in all major history books. The rock onto which Riksäpplet sank was named ‘Äpplet’ after the incident, and the wreck itself has become an integrated component of the underwater seascape. As a consequence the wreckage has never enjoyed a proper ‘discovery’ or undergone documentation under the sensational forms that many other famous shipwrecks have, even though they have sunk in more inconvenient places. In Eriksson’s study the official handling of Riksäpplet’s wrecked body is compared to the more wellknown ships Kronan and Svärdet, which both sank during battle only days before. Eriksson draws on different motifs and driving forces behind the study of naval wrecks from the period from his comparison, and the differences are discussed. Riksäpplet has never achieved a prominent position with the romanticising works of history that honour the national heroes and their deeds which are associated with this era of the Swedish Empire. The first half of the book thus sets out to unpack the ideas that have led to the relative disinterest in Riksäpplet in comparison to other shipwrecks. The second half of the book sets out to analyse Riksäpplet from a specific archaeological perspective, with focus on the ship as material culture. Eriksson’s departure is to explore the relatively low budget fieldwork that has been done at the wreck site. He the combines those facts with a survey of the artefacts recovered from the wreck, of which all are kept in museum archives and private collections. This, in addition to his studies of preserved written correspondence concerning the construction of the ship, has brought new insights into seventeenth-century shipbuilding and how the balance between the global political superpowers affected this trade. In this context Riksäpplet has great potential to show how military alliances are materialized through ships’ architecture.

Den 5 juni 1676 slet sig Riksäpplet från förtöjningarna vid Dalarö skans. Skrovet högg i en klippa och sjönk. Förlisningen kom att betraktas som både snöplig och pinsam och har i efterhand kommit att förtigas i historieböckerna. Klippan bär idag namnet Äpplet och vraket har kommit att bli en integrerad och självklar del av landskapet. Som en konsekvens av detta har vraket inte kunnat påträffas och dokumenteras under de sensationella former som gällt för andra välkända skeppsvrak trots att de förlist på mer otillgängliga platser. I boken jämförs hanteringen av Riksäpplets vrak med de mer välkända regalskeppen Kronan och Svärdet, vilka gick under i strid fem dagar före Riksäpplets förlisning. Utifrån jämförelsen diskuterar Eriksson motiv och drivkrafter som legat till grund för studiet av vrak efter svenska örlogsfartyg från stormaktstiden. Riksäpplet har inte kunnat erövra någon framträdande roll i den romantiserande historieskrivning som lyfter fram nationens hjältar och deras stordåd. Boken första hälft syftar till att synliggöra de mekanismer och drivkrafter som ligger bakom att Riksäpplet prioriterats bort till förmån för undersökningar av andra vrak. Bokens andra hälft ägnas åt att fokusera på ett nytt, mer renodlat arkeologiskt perspektiv på skeppet som materiell kultur. Erikssons utgångspunkt är ett till resurserna tämligen begränsat arkeologiskt fältarbete på vrakplatsen som ändå har genererat stora resultat. Han kombinerar detta med en genomgång av de föremål som genom åren har bärgats från vraket och som finns arkiverade i olika museimagasin och hos privata samlare. Tillsammans med bevarad skriftlig korrespondens kring skeppets byggande väcks nya insikter om 1600-talets skeppsbyggeri och hur detta kunde påverkas av den globala politiska maktbalansen över världshaven. Satt i en sådan kontext har Riksäpplet stor potential att visa hur stormaktens militärallianser materialiserades genom skeppens arkitektur. "

Die hier versammelten Beiträge untersuchen die Einflüsse und den Austausch (wirtschaftliche Beziehungen, politische Kultur, künstlerische Produktionen), die die von den Habsburgern regierten Gebiete in Spanien, Italien, den Niederlanden, Ungarn, Österreich und Amerika von der Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart prägten. The Rossi, whose political and social eminence dates back to the communal age, built in the Parmense a powerful lordship, based both on their estates and fortresses and on a vast patronage network spread over the territory and in the town: and the power of the family, though diminished after the crisis in the relations with the Sforza in 1482, was restored on partially different foundations during the Italian Wars. The essays collected in this book explore the complexity of the Rossi "little seignorial state", focusing on its internal constitution, on its exterior relations and on its artistic and cultural features between the mid-fourteenth and the early sixteenth century.

    Description: On the eve of the fall of the Wall, the European Community is a mature and evolving reality, already able to compete commercially with the United States and grappling with the complex design of the great Single market. At the same time, it has developed political ambitions, with the first forms of foreign policy coordination between Member States, and the start of the long road towards Economic and Monetary Union. Lorenzo Natali (1922-1989) is one of the least known protagonists of this story. Since the birth of the Communities with the Treaties of Rome, and in the following thirty years he accompanied with his political career the fundamental steps of European construction, first as a minister and, from the late Seventies, as Italian commissioner in Brussels, the longest in terms of term of office. He and the Directorates-General he leads are responsible for some of the most significant achievements of that political season, from the conclusion of the great enlargement to the South to the implementation of the Community's first environmental policy, ending to the consolidation of a fruitful and equal dialogue between Europe and the global South. This book aims to give a first glimpse of light on his figure and his political action.

    Description: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument. Finally, the section Theatrical, musical, artistic and documentary evidence is devoted to the sources that have handed down evidence of the operation of the confraternities.

The contributions propose first-hand studies of some of the less researched aspects of the history of the Italian communes: the practices of conflict, vendetta and pacification. The variety of different ways of resolving conflicts brought to light by the studies for the various civic and rural contexts (Mantua, Parma, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and the Valdinievole), between the beginning of the thirteenth and the mid fourteenth century, indicate how normal such social relations were, the widespread nature of the feud and the legitimisation and centrality of the culture of the vendetta within the political arena of the commune. The book hence offers a precious contribution for a review of the prevalent narration of the vendetta in late mediaeval Italian society.

Centred on the experience of Florence, but open to comparison with that of other parts of Italy, the investigation brings to light how, in the transformation of the political framework of the age of the Comune to that of the territorial State between the thirteenth and the fifteenth centuries, in the relations between the powers active in the territory the sphere of justice offered scope for debate and political competition as well as leverage for legitimisation. One of the intentions of the book is, in fact, to contribute to revising the concept of justice, going beyond the traditional vision of public function and an aspect of the progressive affirmation of the State.

    Description: The Italian cities of the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness – alongside a progressive crystallisation of the social hierarchies – the economic and social ascent of individuals belonging to the 'middle class’. These were homines novi who, without resorting to dynastic connections and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, managed to build fortunes and dignity through trade, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, the solidarity of district and parish and the management of welfare. Emblematic of such careers is the figure of an economic agent originating from the rural district, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and welfare institute, the Scuola della Divinità. The book reconstructs the social, economic and spiritual conduct of Donato, placing it within the urban context of Milan in the first half of the fifteenth century.
    Description: Le città italiane degli ultimi secoli del Medioevo videro ancora, accanto a un progressivo irrigidirsi delle gerarchie sociali, l'ascesa economica e sociale di individui appartenenti al 'ceto medio': homines novi che, senza ricorrere a legami di casata e spesso rifiutando il modello associazionistico delle corporazioni, riuscirono a costruirsi fortuna e dignità grazie al commercio, all'imprenditoria, allo sfruttamento della terra, alle solidarietà di quartiere e di parrocchia, alla gestione dell'assistenza. Emblematica di questi percorsi di affermazione è la figura di un operatore economico originario del contado, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, fondatore nel 1429 a Milano di un ente devozionale e assistenziale, la Scuola della Divinità, personaggio del quale si vanno qui a ricostruire i comportamenti sociali, economici e spirituali inserendoli nel contesto urbano milanese della prima metà del Quattrocento.

El texto se centra se centra principalmente en el análisis de cuatro aspectos: las diversas estrategias de resistencia cotidiana realizadas por las clases populares campesinas; los actos de movilización política vinculados al republicanismo; el desarrollo del asociacionismo y la conflictividad social vinculada a la expansión del movimiento obrero de la mano de corticeiros y trabajadores rurales; y las protestas populares relacionadas con la crisis de subsistencias en el marco de la Gran Guerra. Con ello, el libro pretende mostrar a través del ejemplo alentejano que la sociedad rural portuguesa participó activa y dinámicamente en la vida política y social del país durante los primeros años del siglo XX.

    Description: La importancia del adorno de interiores en el siglo xviii apenas ha dejado vestigios materiales más allá de las residencias palaciegas, siendo igualmente escaso el estudio de sus fuentes. Entre estas últimas se encuentra el plan decorativo para los apartamentos de la duquesa de Alba en el Palacio de Buenavista (1792), raro testimonio escrito en forma de viaje pintoresco por el comerciante de sedas y adornista François Grognard, quien hizo un diseño ex profeso a la moda. La traducción al español de este apasionante relato se acompaña de la transcripción anotada de la correspondencia manuscrita conservada en la Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, y tres estudios particulares sobre Grognard, el palacio de Buenavista y la actividad de los adornistas. El libro es una contribución novedosa al conocimiento de la intensa actividad artística y comercial de Madrid y de las relaciones internacionales a través de un intermediario culto y moderno.

    Description: This book treats the spectacular rise in life expectancy during the last three centuries. It is the first study to bring together both published and unpublished material about the history of the health of Belgian men and women and to analyze it critically. Isabelle Devos studies the mechanisms of the historic fall in the death rate in an original manner and answers the question why research on the causes of this decline has not progressed faster. While the discipline of historical demography orients the first part of her book, the discipline of historical epidemiology provides the perspective taken in the second part, in which the role of insects as spreaders of disease is explored. Essential in her study is the importance of local medical practitioners who already at the end of the Ancien Régime warned of the dangers present in the environment. Their ‘ecological’ thinking created a consciousness that was decisive for the further development of healthcare.

    Description: Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302–1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante’s works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante’s texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context.

    Description: "In discussions relating to their role during the Middle Ages, women are typically assumed to only have been “pawns in a political game dominated by men”, or to have primarily acted as intermediaries of power. In this book, however, the varying expressions of power are studied by changing the focus from a political and economic exercise of power controlled by men, to an approach based on interaction and communication between the sexes. In this volume, gender is instead interpreted as a total social phenomenon comprising all spheres of medieval society. This approach provides new opportunities to investigate how power operated on different levels within a societal structure. Thus, power is neither seen as emanating from a centre nor as dominated by only one sex. Instead, it is regarded as an all-embracing societal web, woven through threads of mutual dependence between men and women. In this book, scholars belonging to various disciplines, such as history, history of arts and literary history, discuss how cooperation between the sexes found expression in culture, judicial spheres and social organisation. The contributions do not only consider the Nordic countries, but also how gender constructions were affected by, and transformed through, the influence of contemporary cultural, juridical and ideological currents in Europe.

    Description: Uno studio complessivo e di lunga durata dedicato agli Hucpoldingi, un oggetto di ricerca fino a oggi di difficile inquadramento per gli studiosi. Accostati al supposto governo comitale della città di Bologna dall’erudizione ottocentesca, gli Hucpoldingi sono rimasti per lungo tempo ai margini delle ricostruzioni di storia politica del regno italico altomedievale proprio per l’ampiezza d’azione che caratterizzò il gruppo parentale per più di due secoli, dal IX all’XI. La dispersione geografica dei fondi documentari che attestano la loro azione li ha resi inafferrabili a lungo, nel loro insieme. La ricerca affronta la ricostruzione delle vicende politiche dei diversi membri della parentela, del loro patrimonio e delle clientele loro connesse nei vari settori del regno. Esamina infine gli elementi peculiari del gruppo, dai quali emergono i caratteri del loro potere, le strategie di memoria e le nozioni di autoconspevolezza comuni ai diversi individui.

    Description: Il decimo volume delle Metamorfosi dei Lumi è dedicato a indagare il complesso fenomeno dell’emergenza del sentimento negli anni del Tournant des Lumières (1780-1820). Nonostante il Settecento sia sempre ricordato come il secolo della ragione, esso avvertì al contempo dolorosamente i limiti della razionalità stessa, intavolando un’inedita discussione sulla dimensione passionale. Precedentemente condannato come un fattore di turbamento della ragione, un malcelato residuo di animalità, il sentimento diventa la chiave di volta non solo della riflessione etica tardo settecentesca (caratterizzata dal fiorire della morale sentimentalista in opposizione al razionalismo cartesiano), ma anche il cuore di una nuova retorica incentrata sul patetico e di una riflessione politica che individua nella natura passionale dell’essere umano uno dei tratti dirimenti della sua socievolezza.

    Description: El libro propone un estudio del discurso monárquico hispano a partir de un elemento específico: Las Siete Partidas entre los siglos XIII y XVI. La mirada implica entender dicha obra como un objeto textual que debe estudiarse bajo sus propias condiciones de existencia (tres ediciones con cuantiosas emisiones cada una y casi cien manuscritos en su tradición). A través de un estudio filológico y discursivo de la tradición manuscrita y édita, consideramos entonces la posibilidad de entender el funcionamiento de dicho dispositivo discursivo como un elemento recurrente, siempre presente, pero, a la vez, cambiante en la historia política hispánica a partir de la imagen regia que provee. El núcleo central del análisis está en la consideración de que el texto jurídico alfonsí hace del espacio interno y externo en su construcción discursiva de poder, el cual implica al resto de los poderes imperantes en el período Medieval y Moderno. En tal sentido, no solo hay un análisis del funcionamiento del dispositivo a través de sus diversos testimonios entre los siglos XIII y XVI, sino también una propuesta epistemológica, metodológica y política sobre el funcionamiento de este discurso en la historia. Se reponen varias obras del rey Sabio, tanto jurídicas como historiográficas, obras de su misma época, comentarios y tratados de juristas, medievales y romanos y canonistas para lograr entender el clima de (las) época(s) estudiadas, las innovaciones y reposiciones de vocabulario, etc. Es una muestra de trabajo interdisciplinario al servicio de la Historia del Derecho, entendida esta última a partir de sus textos y sus itinerarios materiales e intelectuales, más que una forma clásica de abordar los mismos problemas de siempre.

    Description: De geschiedenis van het beleg en ontzet van Groningen in 1672 spreekt nog altijd tot de verbeelding. Er was sprake van spanning, tragiek, sensatie en blijdschap. Er waren helden, verliezers en vooral veel onnodige slachtoffers. Nadat vijandelijke troepen grote delen van Nederland hadden overmeesterd, rukten Keuls-Munsterse soldaten op naar Groningen. Onder leiding van hun bisschoppen vuurden zij wekenlang bommen en granaten op de stad af. Dat was tevergeefs, want Groningen hield stand. Zo werd het verzet in het noorden van het land een keerpunt tijdens het zogeheten Ramp- of Bisschopsjaar. De herdenking van 350 jaar ontzet van Groningen was in 2022 aanleiding om nieuwe invalshoeken te verkennen. Dit boek bevat vier bijdragen waarin zowel de geopolitieke en militaire context als de beleving van de belegering en het ontzet aan bod komen. Veel aandacht is er voor de eigentijdse bronnen: wat vertellen ons kranten, brieven, prenten en pamfletten uit 1672 over wat zich in dit jaar in Groningen afspeelde? Speciale belangstelling is er voor de rol van de universiteit tijdens het militaire conflict. Haar studenten droegen bij aan het verzet dat resulteerde in de vrijheid die na afloop gevierd kon worden.

    Description: Beacons and swamps is a proposal for dialogue with the historiography of Argentine prisons, which saw provincial prisons as "swamps": immobile, grey, unchanging spaces. Although it is true that the pace of change in the provinces differed enormously from that of the capital, the work of the local prison reformers was to build "beacons" of modernity, in the style of the one installed in Buenos Aires: the famous National Penitentiary. Much has been discussed about the "panopticon", that institutional model of the society of control, but little is known about those "swamps" that constituted "the grey punishment of the majority". The aim of this book is to explore what is hidden in those provincial confinement spaces, where most of the national prison population was punished. It is based on the hypothesis that it is precisely there, under those swamps, that the original Argentine prison is hidden, because it was forged in those grey places of transition rather than in the "modernising beacons" of Buenos Aires or Ushuaia. Far from the "model", and from the punitive "should be", the embryos of the contemporary prison are hidden in the marshes. Delving into the mud and unearthing these vestiges, investigating the logic of the functioning of provincial prisons, will allow a better understanding of the emergence and consolidation of the punitive devices that characterise Argentine prisons today.

    Description: Faros y pantanos, es una propuesta de diálogo con la historiografía de las prisiones argentinas que vio en las cárceles provinciales, “pantanos”: espacios inmóviles, grises y sin cambios. Si bien es cierto que los ritmos de cambio provinciales diferían enormemente con el de la capital, el trabajo de los reformistas penitenciarios locales fue el de construir “faros” de modernidad, al estilo del instalado en Buenos Aires: la célebre Penitenciaría Nacional. Se ha discutido mucho sobre el “panóptico”, aquel modelo institucional de la sociedad de control, sin embargo, poco se conoce de aquellos “pantanos” que constituyeron “el gris castigo de la mayoría”. La apuesta de este libro es explorar lo que esconden aquellos espacios de reclusión provinciales, donde se castigaba a la mayor parte de la población carcelaria nacional. Se parte de la hipótesis de que, precisamente allí, debajo de aquellos pantanos se esconde la prisión argentina primigenia, porque se fraguó en esos grises lugares de transición más que en los “faros modernizadores” de Buenos Aires o Ushuaia. Apartadas del “modelo”, y del “deber ser” punitivo, se esconden en la marisma los embriones de la prisión contemporánea. Adentrarse en el barro y desenterrar esos vestigios, investigar acerca de la lógica de funcionamiento de las cárceles provinciales, permitirá comprender mejor el surgimiento y la consolidación de los dispositivos punitivos que caracterizan a las cárceles argentinas hoy.

    Description: The present edition denotes a continuation of the collection of documents, which the historians Franc Kos and later Milko Kos began publishing in 1902 within the frame of the Leonova družba (Leon’s Society) in Ljubljana. Five books were issued under the title “Gradivo za zgodovino Slovencev v srednjem veku” (Materials for the history of Slovenes in the Middle Ages) (1902, 1906, 1911, 1915, 1928). The present edition is based on different starting-points, as modern researches into history can no longer refer to regestum (abstracts of documents) only but they must derive from sources themselves, published on the basis of entire originals, and equipped with appropriate critical apparatus. The book was written on the grounds of the material the historian Božo Otorepec of the Historical Institute collected. Included in the edition are documents of a ten-year period – that is from 1246 (with that year the fifth volume of Kos’s publishing of the Gradivo za zgodovino Slovencev v srednjem veku concludes) to 1255. The first volume (6/1) does not include a name index and a table of contents, which will be published in the second volume (6/2).
    Description: Izdaja je nadaljevanje zbirke dokumentov, ki jo je 1902 začel izdajati Franc Kos in nadaljeval Milko Kos. Vanjo so vključene listine obdobja desetih let, in sicer od leta 1246 (s katerim se končuje peti zvezek Kosove objave Gradiva za zgodovino Slovencev v srednjem veku) do leta 1955.

    Description: "The Third Mexican Provincial Council, celebrated in 1585, has always been considered a cornerstone of the canonical law of Spanish America, both with regard to its content and the long period and vast territory in which it was in force. New possibilities of research had been made possible due to the publication of the working manuscripts in recent years, enabling a better understanding of the juridical work produced by the bishops. Given these new materials, the author has delved deeper into the drafting processes carried out by the provincial council. Taking a close look at the reports sent to the council, the theological and juridical treaties, and other conciliar and synodal legislation, along with the consultations to jurists and theologians, the author has identified different processes of drafting of the conciliar decrees. The result of this research allows us to relocate the authorship of the conciliar decrees to the Mexican episcopate as well as establish the degree of their originality. Locality of the law and its significance in the legal order in force at that time is one of the characteristics of the body of decrees promulgated at the Third Mexican Provincial Council."

It also includes a list of Portuguese graduates. In La Sapienza, contrary to what has been maintained by many scholars, hundreds of foreign students received their doctorate degrees in Civil and Canon Law. The book, after a presentation of the College of Consistorial Lawyers and the Professors of the Faculty of Civil and Canon Law, emphasizes the international character of the doctoral students and focuses on Spaniards.     Description: Fifteenth-century Bologna is one of the major Italian cities, home to a prestigious university and thriving industrial and economic center; in these conditions, ideal for the development of the early typographic art, the market of the manuscript book, with its world of copyists, illuminators, bookbinders, stationaries, soon adapts to the new way of production, fostering between XV and XVI century the emergence of some great families of booksellers-printers-publishers. Since the first decades of the sixteenth century, however, an overwhelming foreign book production is increasingly present on bolognese market: important printers like Vincenzo Valgrisi and Gabriele Giolito establish branches in the city, while in the law book sector the Lyonese publishing industry of Giunti is gaining momentum. The situation changes again in the second half of the century, when the market is remodeled following the conditioning by the ecclesiastical authorities and it extends to social strata previously excluded from cultural consumption. The work, which is based on a detailed investigation of the documentary sources, reconstructs for the first time a social history of the Bolognese book trade, both outlining the events of families and shops operating in the city, and opening the look at the relationships with the large foreign firms.
