    Description: Helsingin vedet 1800-luvun lopusta 2000-luvulle -tutkimus antaa yleiskuvan vesihuollon pitkästä kehityksestä ja ihmisen ja eri vesien suhteesta Helsingissä. Tässä kirjassa annetaan myös tietoa Suomen jätevedenpuhdistuksen historian monista vaiheista keskittyen Helsinkiin sekä perehdytään siihen, mitä vesi merkitsi ja miten siihen suhtauduttiin eri aikoina. Kirjassa perehdytään muun muassa Vantaanjoen ristiriitaiseen, mutta keskeiseen rooliin sekä viemärinä että raakavesilähteenä, saastumattoman ja riittävän raakavesivesilähteen löytämiseksi tehtyihin varhaisiin pohjavesitutkimuksiin, ulosteongelman ratkaisuun sekä Päijänteen ottamiseen raakavesilähteeksi. Teos taustoittaa viemäröinnin ja jätevesienpuhdistuksen historiaa koko Euroopan mittakaavassa tuhansien vuosien takaa. Erityisesti perehdytään Suomessa tehtyihin ratkaisuihin ja syvällisemmin Helsingin viemäröinnin varhaisiin vaiheisiin ja jätevedenpuhdistuksen alkutaipaleeseen. Keskeiseksi nousevat kysymykset, mitä toimia toteutettiin kun tavoitteeksi otettiin vesistöjen puhdistuminen, miten nämä toimenpiteet ovat vaikuttaneet asukkaiden elämään ja ympäristön tilaan. Lisäksi pohditaan mitkä ovat tulevaisuuden haasteet vesihuollon ammattilaisten näkökulmasta katsottuna.

    Description: The second and updated edition of this new study of the genesis of the Indonesian national state is based on the notion that the birth of that nation grew out of not only the liberation movement but also from the Dutch rule that the nationalists agitated against. The book places a clear emphasis on the ways in which Dutch rule was established in the Indonesian archipelago in the course of three centuries and examines the developments of Dutch colonial policies. This feeds into chapters that focus on the Indonesian nationalist movement and the Japanese occupation of the colony in 1942-1945. The occupation helped to enable the proclamation of Indonesian indepence and the creation of the Republic in August 1945. The conflict that erupted between the Repub-lic and the Netherlands was brought to an incomplete ‘solution’ in 1949, but the dis-pute about West-Irian led to a sequel that lasted for another thirteen years. More than half of this book is dedicated to the conflict and its aftermath. Much attention is paid to the sentiments and ideas that informed Dutch policy. Various issues that have received scant attention in the historiography are now dis-cussed. The author based his study on Dutch and international literature, contemporary newspapers and policy documents, and his own memories. In the book’s title, the stork represents the Dutch and the garuda functions as a symbol of Indonesia. J. Herman Burgers (1926) worked at the Dutch Department of Foreign Affairs. He studied Law in Amsterdam and Political Science at Stanford University. He was deeply interested in the conflict between the Netherlands and the Republic of Indone-sia, as it broke out in 1945. This fascination has never left him, and he has continued to study the conflict and its aftermath, especially during the years 1948-1950 when he was in Indonesia for his Dutch military service.

Teos tarjoaa näkökulman myös muun muassa siihen, miten lapset kokevat uutisten väkivaltakertomusten hahmot tai miten tytöt rakentavat kertomuksissaan tyttöyttä.     Description: During Antwerp's Golden Age, the city replaced Bruges as the primary trading hub of Western Europe. Antwerp transformed from a medium-sized Brabantine town to an unparalleled metropolis in the Low Countries with over 100.000 inhabitants. Although little is known regarding the impact of this transformation on the city's governance, Antwerp serves as an intriguing and exceptional case study. Unlike other trading metropolises such as sixteenth-century Lyon or seventeenth-century Amsterdam, where merchants increasingly occupied positions in the city council, this was not the case in Antwerp. This book ‘Macht in de Metropool’ reconstructs the compositions of Antwerp’s city council between 1400 and 1550. It examines the profile of the different aldermen and mayors and how they evolved over time. Furthermore, the research analyses the real estate investments of this group and their relationship with key groups in society such as the merchants, the nobility, and the central administration.

    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

Where in the old days patients used to be able to just rest and receive care, nowadays they have to get active. Not only do they have to keep working as much as possible, they are expected to actively participate in their own treatment, like finding out where you can get the best doctor or how to give yourself injections. Also they have to participate in client councils of the hospital. In this book, Margo Trappenburg discusses the positive but foremost the negative aspects of this hyper- democratization of health care.
    Description: Nog niet zo lang geleden betekende ziek zijn dat je was vrijgesteld van maatschappelijke verplichtingen. Zieken mochten verzuimen van hun werk en zieken hoefden niet mee te doen aan sociale evenementen die zij niet aankonden. Ziek zijn was misschien niet leuk, maar je rustte er wel lekker van uit. Tegenwoordig ligt dat heel anders. Van zieken wordt verwacht dat zij zoveel mogelijk blijven werken en hun normale taken blijven doen. Teveel rust heet therapeutisch onverantwoord. Naast de normale verplichtingen van gezonde burgers krijgen zieken er zelfs een groot aantal taken bij. Zij moeten actief participeren in hun eigen behandeling, ze moeten zichzelf leren prikken, stoma-zakjes verwisselen, oefeningen doen, uitzoeken waar de beste arts zit voor hun specifieke kwaal, en uitzoeken bij welke verzekeraar zij zich het best kunnen inschrijven als klant. Daarnaast moeten ze idealiter meepraten in de cliëntenraad van het ziekenhuis of de instelling waar zij worden behandeld, meedenken met de medici die richtlijnen opstellen over hun ziekte, meepraten met onderzoekers die van hen willen horen waarnaar zij onderzoek zouden willen doen, meedenken met de overheid over zorgvoorzieningen en het basisverzekeringspakket en meedoen aan talloze cursussen, symposia, en themamiddagen over vraagsturing, empowerment en 'het patiëntenperspectief'. Margo Trappenburg bespreekt in Genoeg is genoeg de positieve, maar vooral ook de negatieve gevolgen van deze hyperdemocratisering in de zorg.

Deze nieuwe ronde in het debat over de verhouding van wetenschap, politiek en cultuur wordt eerst gevolgd op wetenschapsfilosofisch niveau. Vervolgens komt de huidige politieke discussie over identiteit, tolerantie en solidariteit aan bod. Het leggen van een geloofwaardig verband tussen moraal, politiek en wetenschap blijkt een oefening in intellectuele evenwichtskunst.

Miten jätevesien puhdistusyhteistyö on alkanut ja muuttunut vuosien varrella? Miksi puhdistetaan naapurikuntien jätevesiä? Millaista keskustelua jätevedet ovat herättäneet menneisyydessä ja millaista tulevaisuutta koskevaa keskustelua niistä on käyty? Oikean strategian toteuttamisessa tarvitaan yhteistyötä ja osaavaa johtamista. Espoo on voinut historiassa käyttää omien resurssiensa lisäksi vesihuollossa myös naapurikuntien resursseja. Nyt tarkastelukohteena olevan jätevesienpuhdistuksen osalta tämä on tarkoittanut sitä, että naapurikunnat ovat maksaneet osansa ja osin enemmänkin kuin osansa jätevesiensä puhdistamisesta ja varsinkin Suomenojan jätevedenpuhdistamosta. Näiden lisäresurssien turvin historian saatossa kertyneet resurssit ovat mahdollistaneet nykyisen hyvän tilanteen pitkän tähtäimen strategisten päätösten avulla. Näistä strategisista päätöksistä yksi konkreettisin näyttö ovat jätevesiä koskevat sopimukset naapurikuntien kanssa. Sopimukset ja niiden takana olleet päätökset ovat hyvin kaukonäköisiä ja kaikkia osapuolia sitovia. Ne osaltaan mahdollistavat, että valittavana on ollut kehityspolkuja, joita kaikkialla ei ole ollut käytössä. Vuoden 2010 alusta alkaen Espoon vesihuolto on toiminut yhdessä pk-seudun organisaatiossa alueen muiden vesilaitosten kanssa, HSY:n organisaation alaisuudessa.

    Description: This book explores the media coverage of three prominent Finnish labor market cases in the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. It analyzes how this arena supported or undermined the power positions of each side and the reaching of the contract. The cases in study are the first proper general agreement in 1968 (Liinamaa 1) and the endeavors for so-called “social contract” by the Government of Esko Aho (1991) and Juha Sipilä (2015). The study identifies changes and continuities in the political discourses, in the ways of making validity claims in political argumentation, and in media/journalistic interventionism. These content analytical viewpoints illustrate the theoretical ideas about mediatization of politics presented in the book. By analyzing corporatist and pluralist aspects of decision making, the book opens a view in the relationships among labor market organizations, the Government, and the media in the three decades studied.

    Description: Sociale gelijkheid is goed voor iedereen. Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik, criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch) en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van onszelf te verbeteren. Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven, is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én het voorkomen van ongelijkheid. De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien. De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook nieuwe kennisvragen. In de verschillende bijdragen staan grootstedelijke vraagstukken centraal: over wonen, mobiliteit, duurzaamheid, onderwijs, radicalisering en arbeidsparticipatie.     Description: Scholen moeten aan dreigende schooluitvallers niet alleen onderwijs geven, maar ook alle sociaal-emotionele zorg en steun die nodig is om een plaats in de samenleving te veroveren. Alleen op scholen met een dergelijke brede taakopvatting bestaat een reële kans om te voorkomen dat de meest kwetsbare jongeren volledig buiten de maatschappij komen te staan. De regering moet scholen en ROC's actief stimuleren dit bredere 'plus-pakket' aan te bieden. Dat schrijft de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR) in zijn rapport aan de regering Vertrouwen in de school. Over de uitval van 'overbelaste' jongeren. In dit rapport richt de Raad zijn aandacht op één categorie van (dreigende) uitvallers, namelijk 'overbelaste' jongeren. Dat zijn jongeren die gebukt gaan onder een opeenstapeling van problemen, uiteenlopend van beperkte vaardigheden en gedragsproblemen tot gebroken gezinnen, armoede, schulden of verslaving. Bij deze jongeren is schooluitval vaak de voorbode van algehele maatschappelijke uitval. Op basis van vele gesprekken in het veld en bestudering van de binnen- en buitenlandse literatuur formuleert de Raad in dit rapport aanbevelingen voor een effectieve preventie van voortijdig schoolverlaten bij deze jongeren. De centrale aanbeveling van de WRR is dat scholen aan deze jongeren 'structuur' en 'verbondenheid' moeten bieden. De raad pleit voor een school die uitgaat van een bredere taakopvatting dan alleen het overdragen van kennis en noemt scholen met dergelijke brede maatschappelijke taakopvatting 'plusscholen'. De school kan zo uitgroeien tot veilige haven die tegenwicht biedt aan de chaos en risico's in hun leven.

    Description: Het Nederlandse politieke landschap werd van oudsher gedomineerd door drie stromingen: christendemocraten, liberalen en sociaaldemocraten. Lange tijd toonden verkiezingsuitslagen een hoge mate van continuïteit. Daar kwam aan het eind van de jaren zestig van de 20e eeuw verandering in. Vanaf 1994 zette deze ontwikkeling door en sindsdien laten verkiezingen steeds grote verschuivingen zien. Met de opkomst van populistische stromingen, vanaf 2002, is bovendien het politieke landschap ingrijpend veranderd. De snelle veranderingen in het partijenspectrum zorgen voor een overbelichting van de verschillen tussen ‘toen’ en ‘nu’. Bij oppervlakkige beschouwing staat de instabiliteit van vandaag tegenover de gestolde onbeweeglijkheid van het verleden. Een dergelijk beeld is echter een versimpeling, want ook in vroeger jaren konden de politieke spanningen hoog oplopen en kwamen kabinetten regelmatig voortijdig ten val. Er is niet alleen sprake van discontinuïteit, maar ook wel degelijk van een doorgaande lijn. 'Een versplinterd landschap' belicht deze historische lijn voor alle politieke partijen die in 2017 in de Tweede Kamer zijn gekozen. De oudste daarvan bestaat al bijna honderd jaar (SGP), de jongste partijen (DENK en FvD) zijn nagelnieuw. Vrijwel alle bijdragen zijn geschreven door vertegenwoordigers van de wetenschappelijke bureaus van de partijen, waardoor een unieke invalshoek is ontstaan: wetenschappelijke distantie gecombineerd met een beschouwing van ‘binnenuit’.

TIMSS stands for Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and measures worldwide developments in knowledge and skills in science and in attitudes of students who have completed four or eight years of formal education. The 'e' of eTIMSS refers to the digital administration of the test. In the Netherlands, group 6 students took the 2019 TIMSS test on a tablet. The students have been tested in mathematics and science (biology, physics and chemistry and physical geography). The present report reports on the outcomes of TIMSS-2019 in the Netherlands. The remainder of this chapter describes the structure of TIMSS-2019.
    Description: In het voorjaar van 2019 hebben 3355 Nederlandse leerlingen in groep 6 van het basisonderwijs afkomstig van 112 scholen meegedaan aan eTIMSS-2019. TIMSS staat voor Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study en meet wereldwijd de ontwikkelingen in kennis en vaardigheden in de exacte vakken en in attituden van leerlingen die vier of acht jaar formeel onderwijs hebben genoten. De ‘e’ van eTIMSS verwijst naar de digitale afname van de toets. In Nederland hebben groep 6 leerlingen de TIMSS-toets van 2019 op een tablet gemaakt. De leerlingen zijn getoetst in rekenen-wiskunde en natuuronderwijs (biologie, natuur- en scheikunde en fysische aardrijkskunde). In het voorliggende rapport wordt verslag gedaan van de uitkomsten van TIMSS-2019 in Nederland. Het resterende deel van dit hoofdstuk beschrijft de opzet van TIMSS-2019.

    Description: Het boek A Dutch Miracle van J. Visser en A. Hemerijck uit 1997 analyseerde de rol van onderhandelingen, coördinatie en consensus in het Nederlandse Poldermodel en stelde vast dat het cruciale factoren zijn geweest in het overkomen van de hoge werkloosheid van begin jaren '80 en de goede performance van de Nederlandse arbeidsmarkt in de jaren '90. Nu, bijna 20 jaar later, worden er steeds meer vragen gesteld bij zowel de legitimiteit als de functionaliteit van het Poldermodel. De representativiteit van de vakbonden is dalende en jongeren en het midden- en kleinbedrijf zien zich vaak niet vertegenwoordigd in de Polder die volgens critici op ondemocratische wijze deelbelangen in plaats van het algemeen belang vertegenwoordigt en noodzakelijke hervormingen op sociaaleconomisch gebied in de weg staat. Door differentiatie van belangen tussen sectoren of hoog en laag opgeleiden wordt het voor de sociale partners ook steeds moeilijker om met één stem te spreken en centrale afspraken te maken uit naam van alle betrokkenen. Ook is het voor de sociale partners moeilijker geworden afspraken te maken over sociale zekerheid en vervolgens een rol te spelen in de implementatie van deze afspraken, aangezien hun rol in de uitvoering van de sociale zekerheid is verminderd. Coördinatie van het algemene sociale zekerheidsbeleid en de afstemming met cao's en het arbeidsvoorwaardenbeleid zijn dus moeilijker zijn geworden. Het maken van centrale afspraken wordt verder beperkt door het groeiende belang van Europees beleid en afspraken in Euroverband met betrekking tot overheidsuitgaven, en door voortschrijdende globalisering en finacialisation. Deze ontwikkelingen en kritieken leiden dus tot serieuze vragen over de legitimiteit en functionaliteit het Poldermodel. In dit boek worden de hedendaagse legitimiteit en functionaliteit van het model vanuit verschillende hoeken en disciplines geanalyseerd om zo een beeld te vormen van het Poldermodel anno nu en van de mogelijke rol van het Poldermodel in de toekomst. De lessen van de verschillende hoofdstukken worden in de inleiding bij elkaar gebracht.

    Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.

    Description: Commonly viewed as a revolutionary and propagandist Herman Gorter (1864–1927) is often overlooked despite his lasting contribution to Dutch poetry. This selection of thirty-one poems, translated by Paul Vincent, focuses on Gorter’s experimental love and nature lyrics in Poems of 1890, and the Introductionsets the poems in the context of his earlier seminal work 'Mei' (May) as well as his often neglected Socialist verse. The lyrical expansiveness, consistent use of rhyme and vivid imagery of the Dutch landscape that characterises 'Mei' evolves into more fragmentary verse in Poems of 1890, and the joyful celebratory tone of Gorter’s poetry increasingly co-exists with a sense of isolation and introspection. This can be viewed in the context of a rapidly changing political scene in Europe in the prelude to the First World War and the Russian Revolution. This is a valuable collection that revisits Gorter’s literary and political legacy, and introduces English-speaking readers to a selection of his most accessible and lyrical poems.

    Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

    Description: The research reported in this publication concerns the second sub-study of the project Administrative Power and the Effect of Professionalisation Incentives in Secondary Education. This sub-study focuses on the various incentives that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and organisations affiliated with OCW (for instance NRO, the Inspectorate and DUO, VO-raad, the Education Council and collective agreements) give to various actor groups in education. The aim is to maintain and improve the professional competencies of those actor groups. Incentives' is another word for professionalisation policy instruments (PBIs) and these can be categorised as PBIs arising from legislation or regulations, PBIs of a financial nature and PBIs intended to entice professionalisation activities through communication. For each PBI aimed at secondary education, the actor(s) targeted and the nature of the incentive were identified. For comparison with secondary education, this has also been done for PBIs in PO and MBO. To gain more insight into the familiarity, use, effectiveness and possible side effects, experts were interviewed and asked to fill in a digital questionnaire. Finally, a focus group meeting was held to discuss our findings in more detail on the basis of various propositions.
    Description: Het onderzoek brengt de stand van zaken met betrekking tot bestuurlijk vermogen en professionalisering in het voortgezet onderwijs in kaart. We doen dat door verschillende opeenvolgende deelstudies. We gaan door secundaire analyses na in hoeverre besturen voor voortgezet onderwijs van elkaar verschillen in gerealiseerde onderwijskwaliteit. Door literatuurstudie en interviews met deskundigen schetsen we vervolgens welke professionaliseringprikkels in het voortgezet onderwijs voorkomen en waar ze toe leiden. De kern van ons onderzoek bestaat uit een combinatie van een surveyonderzoek met (verkennende en verdiepende) casestudies. We onderzoeken in hoeverre besturen beschikken over bestuurlijk vermogen, hoe ze reageren op externe professionaliseringsprikkels en hoe ze interne professionalisering vormgeven. We analyseren de relaties tussen bestuurlijk vermogen, professionalisering en onderwijskwaliteit en gaan de invloed na van bestuurlijke kenmerken. Door expertmeetings met vertegenwoordigers van beleid, praktijk en wetenschap komen we uiteindelijk tot breed gedragen aanbevelingen voor het verbeteren van het voortgezet onderwijs.

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: 100 years of water supply and sanitation in Finland This book is written by Petri S. Juuti, Tapio S.Katko & Riikka P. Rajala. Finland is known as a land of thousands of lakes. Yet, there are regions in Finland where lakes are very few and the lack of fresh water is an ordinary problem. Finland is quite unique in Fennoscandia as to its water resources. The country has some 56 000 lakes with a minimum area of one hectare and all together 200000 lakes. Ground water occurs in alluvial eskers formed during ice ages, the last of which ended some 10 000 years ago. Nowadays some 60 per cent of the people use natural or artificially recharged ground water. However, areas lower than 50–60 metres above sea level have problems with water quality due to geological reasons. In such areas bigger cities use surface water for their water supply or acquire their raw water from sources further away. The book shows us how water supply and sanitation have developed in Finland during years of political independence starting from the year 1917.

When educating and teaching communities understand the importance of the community, through everyday interaction, there are opportunities to establish strong links between the teacher and the learners. If a common curriculum activity is to be developed as a meaningful negotiation of the entire education and teaching community, it also requires interaction and co-operation between different actors.

Opetussuunnitelmatyössä kohtaavat rakenteet ja yksilöt, poliittiset, taloudelliset ja pedagogiset intressit, oppijoiden, opettajien, johdon ja virkamiesten maailmat sekä erilaiset tavat nähdä tieto ja tietäminen, osaaminen ja yhteiskunnan muutokset. Toisessa osassa, Opiskelija yhteisön jäsenenä, keskitytään opintoihin kiinnittymisen, hyvinvoinnin ja mielekkäiden oppimiskokemusten arviointiin, tukemiseen ja kehittämiseen opetusyhteisöissä luoden samalla vaihtoehtoista tulkintaa ja viitekehystä nykyiselle tehokkuutta ja tuloksia korostavalle ajattelutavalle. Kolmannessa osassa, Lukeminen, kirjoittaminen ja monilukutaito koulutuksen yhteisöissä, katsotaan paitsi kirjoittamisen opetuksen historiaan suomalaisessa koulussa mutta pyritään myös ymmärtämään tulevaa ja sitä, mitä lukutaidolla oikeastaan nykyisin tarkoitetaan. Erilaisissa kasvatuksen ja opetuksen yhteisöissä on olennaista kehittää opetusta askel askeleelta eteenpäin kohti oppijoiden ja opettajien hyvinvoivia ja uutta luovia yhteisöjä. Teoksen nimessä oleva Kehittämisen palat kuvaa kehittämistyön vähittäistä, pienin askelin etenemistä ja yhteisöjen salat puolestaan yhteisöjen monilta osin tiedostamatonta potentiaalia kasvatuksen ja opetuksen kehittämisessä.

The starting point was to link up with identity development in adolescence and developing social competences in education.     Description: In dit rapport is nagegaan hoe het onderwijs kan bijdragen aan het voorkomen van radicalisering en polarisatie van jongeren. Het uitgangspunt was om daarbij aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsontwikkeling in de adolescentie en het ontwikkelen van sociale competenties binnen het onderwijs. Door beter aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsbehoeften van jongeren kunnen eventuele radicale gedachten worden bijgestuurd naar positieve politieke of maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Deze benadering is tot op heden onderbelicht gebleven in onderzoek en ook onvoldoende aanwezig in bestaande beleidsstrategieën voor het onderwijs

    Description: Democracy is one of the most used and misinterpreted terms of our time. In public discussions concerning the subject it is tacitly assumed that everyone is aware of the meaning of democracy and the implications it carries. In reality democratic ideals and practices take on various forms in various countries. Frank Hendriks sheds light on this subject matter in a comprehensible manner. He distinguishes four ground forms of democracy, which are inherent to democratic forms everywhere. Along with "consensus democracy", Hendriks compares "pendulum democracy", "voter democracy" and "participatory democracy", at national as well as subnational levels of governance. Hendriks concludes in his studies that contrary to popular belief, not one model is superior to the others and calls for a realistic approach to a democracy that is sensitive to the context in which democracy must prove and sustain itself.
    Description: In Nederland wordt net als elders veel geklaagd over 'het democratisch tekort' en 'de kloof tussen burger en bestuur'. De aangedragen oplossing is doorgaans 'meer democratie'. De consensus op dit punt lijkt groot. Maar de werkelijkheid is anders. Uit een schijnbaar eenvoudig principe, de samentrekking van demos en kratia, het volk dat regeert, vloeien zeer uiteenlopende denk-en handelingswerelden voort. In Vitale democratie werpt Frank Hendriks licht op deze zaak. Hij doet dat in een verhelderend en stimulerend relaas dat op verschillende niveaus kan worden gelezen. Enerzijds schetst Hendriks een panoramisch beeld van wat er in de wereld te koop is aan beproefde modellen van democratie. Anderzijds ontvouwt hij een theoretisch perspectief van waaruit de meervoudige werkelijkheid van de democratie op een zinvolle manier kan worden bekeken, vergeleken en op waarde geschat.

    Description: Klassieke mythologie was een geliefd onderwerp bij de rederijkers van de zestiende eeuw. Deze ‘fabulen’ werden bewerkt tot spelen van zinne waarin herkenbare liefdeskwesties aan de orde kwamen. Er zijn negen van deze zogeheten mythologisch- amoureuze spelen overgeleverd, geschreven en opgevoerd vanaf het einde van de vijftiende eeuw. De teksten maken duidelijk hoe de omgang met klassieke mythologie veranderde in de periode die de overgang vormt van middeleeuwen naar moderne tijd. Deze studie gaat in op de verhouding tot de oorspronkelijke teksten, op de dramaturgie en opvoering van de spelen en op de overlevering in handschrift en druk. De mythologie, heidens en fictioneel van aard, bood ruimte om te experimenteren met de uitbeelding van erotiek en emoties, terwijl de dramaturgie een didactisch kader vormde dat tegemoet kwam aan de sociale en ethische behoeften van die tijd. De mythologisch-amoureuze spelen droegen daarmee bij aan de introductie, verspreiding en acceptatie van antieke mythologie in de volkstalige cultuur en aan de ontwikkeling van een effectieve liefdesdidactiek.

    Description: Het openbaar bestuur is veelvuldig inzet van debat. Zowel in de publieke meningsvorming als in de politieke discussie worden zijn taak, rol en positie nadrukkelijk tegen het licht gehouden. Dat mag geen verbazing wekken: openbaar bestuur is per definitie een publieke zaak. Hoe komt het publieke karakter in dat bestuur zelf tot uitdrukking en wie bewaakt dit? Het zijn vragen die geregeld worden gesteld, maar zelden worden beantwoord. Europeanisering, juridisering, decentralisering, deregulering, privatisering, verzelfstandiging en bevordering van marktwerking hebben het bestuur de afgelopen decennia een ander gezicht gegeven. Ze gaan in op actuele vraagstukken rond bestuurlijke versnippering, de verhouding tot Europa, gezag, de media en verantwoording. Tezamen biedt dit een gevarieerde beschouwing van de problemen en de uitdagingen van het hedendaagse bestuur en een perspectief op zijn publieke karakter.
