    Description: The exhibition: “La Fisica ad Arcetri. Dalla nascita della Regia Università alle leggi raziali” was organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and by the Florence Section of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence, the Physical Science and Natural Mathematics Library of the University of Florence, the Science and Technology Foundation, and the “Galileo” Museum of Florence. It was held from May to September 2016 in the Exhibition Hall of the Municipal Historical Archive in via dell'Oriuolo, Florence. The time covered by the exhibition ranges from the birth of the Royal University of Florence (1924) to the enactment of racial laws in Italy by Benito Mussolini’s government (1938). The exhibited material comes from the Municipality's Historical Archive, the Garbasso Archive, the Della Corte Fund, the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Science and Technology Foundation and from private collections. The catalogue is published as the third volume of the series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo».

    Description: The book collects the contributions of a group of scholars, with different scientific backgrounds, on the issue of the relationship between taxation, solidarity and citizenship within the EU. The common thread linking them is the inescapability of the tax duty in a community of rights and the incompleteness of the European system, which performs important functions of collective interest without claiming any cost for those who use it. What emerges is the need for a genuine EU own tax, which, without the intermediary of the Member States, would burden the users of European public goods, increasing awareness of the social value of the EU, amplifying its solidarity dimension, and outlining a new concept of citizenship. In short, I pay, therefore I am (European citizen).

    Description: Botanist, zoologist, explorer and anthropologist: between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth, Odoardo Beccari was all this and more. His fame continues to be linked primarily with the scientific expeditions to south-east Asia, and Borneo in particular, and his work on Palms, as well as his skill as a draughtsman and photographer. The material conserved in his personal archive is of fundamental importance for a reconstruction, not only of the his scientific career but also of his private life. This inventory finally provides us with the key to find our way around a very significant body of documents ranging from correspondence, notes and preparatory materials to manuscript drafts, travel journals, map sketches, drawings and photographs.

    Description: The second “Notebook of the Modern History Laboratory” takes up and develops some of the interventions presented in the Seminar on Themes and Problems of Modern History, which has been held for more than fifteen years at the SAGAS Department of the University of Florence. The contributions collected here discuss the construction of the modern state from different points of view, through the slow and complex evolution of central sovereignty over autonomy, the role of the courts, the development of diplomacy and its ceremonial and the history of the idea of freedom. Special attention is paid to the cases of the Electorate of Saxony and of the monarchy of France in the 16th century, the Consigli (recommendations) by Scipione Ammirato, the theme of democracy in the Encyclopédie and that of national plurality for the protection of minorities in the Habsburg Empire.

    Description: This volume presents the recovery, cataloging, and valorization project of the collection donated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) to the Mineralogical Cabinet of the Collegio Nazareno in Rome in 1785. This donation represents, so far, the only geo-mineralogical collection belonging to Joseph II with certainty. The specimen cataloging records, drawn according to the ICCD national catalographic standards for the mineralogical (BNM) and petrographic (BNPE) heritage, are freely available on the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali website. The collection is open to visitors in its permanent exhibition at the Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio in Rome. This volume has been realized within the project PANN20.00605 “Dono imperiale. La collezione mineralogica dell’Imperatore Giuseppe II al Collegio Nazareno di Roma” thanks to the financial support of the Italian Ministry of University and Research, Annual Grant – Legge 6/2000 – D.D. 1524 of 21/01/2019.

    Description: The volume describes experiences of the first twelve years of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence in its new location. Our need to write stemmed from the impression of having accomplished a phase of our work and of being called to take stock of the situation, giving account of the work done and critically analysing it, in order to be ready to face the new challenges that the future would present, starting from today.

    Description: Let's try to imagine a world where scientific illiteracy is the exception rather than the rule. That is a world of subjects who are, in the vast majority, informed and aware of the main ongoing scientific debates, and who are capable of critically and independently thinking about them. A world in which everyone could dispose of the resources to develop a thoughtful opinion on cloning techniques, genetically modified organisms, new anti-cancer therapies or even on the origin of life on Earth and the final destiny of the universe. If this world were possible, what would it look like? The scepticism about the feasibility of such a scenario is justified, however it is equally undeniable that during the twentieth century there have been such profound transformations in the relationship between science and public opinion as to make the question at least legitimate and worthy of an answer.

The text features the complete speeches by Luigi Dei, Rector, by Andrea Zorzi, Director of the SAGAS Department, the Laudatio by Mauro Guerrini, president of the Degree in Library and Archival Sciences and the Lectio Doctoralis by Michele Casalini, entitled La centralità delle biblioteche per il progresso e la democrazia.     Description: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

    Description: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi.

    Description: Yet another book on witches and witchcraft? Although numerous, studies on this phenomenon that had such a profound influence on the political, social and religious history of the late Middle Ages and the early modern age in Europe can never be enough. At this time the political regimes were actively involved in the witch hunts, not least the Catholic church which was intensely engaged in developing instruments of control aimed at governing and curbing dissent. The book is broken down into thematic sections – rules, treatises and trials, transmission /possession – which reflect the multiplicity of the scientific proposals that have emerged in recent years, and also represent a conscious preliminary orientation of possible readings. At centre stage of the witchcraft show are the witches and their judges, from the theologians and philosophers to the exorcists. As well as addressing actual events, the book also explores the nature of the beliefs and the way in which they were transmitted in the various social strata, and the phenomenon of diabolical possession which conveyed the message of the presence of the devil in the world.

    Description: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome’s pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14).

    Description: In a time, ours, in which historiography prefers to measure itself with witchcraft as a judicial phenomenon, or with the men who personally led the persecution, or even with the demonological treatises that greatly influenced witch hunters, this book focuses instead on the victims. Women accused of witchcraft are the protagonists of the trials initiated between the late Middle Ages and the early modern age: that was the time when the great witch hunt was unleashed in Europe. The profiles of the alleged witches, even if drawn by their judges, emerge from these pages in all their changeability and drama: women that are reluctant to plead guilty to unspoken crimes, marked by stubborn silence, surrendered to the full confession of every wickedness extorted by torture.

    Description: This work analyzes the evolution of the German Democratic Republic during 1971-1985, with particular attention to the economic sphere, relations with the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany, and the impact that changes in the international economic system have they had on these plans. The basic question concerns the actual degree of subordination of the GDR to the USSR: absolute for traditional historiography, which denies the possibility of an East German foreign policy, relative to the light of archival documents, which show a framework of bilateral relations constantly affected by tensions. In addition to analyzing the relationships in an unequal alliance between center and periphery, the study of the decision-making mechanisms internal to the GDR and the effectiveness of a system in which politics dictated the priority in terms of economic choices are at the center of this volume.

    Description: The feast represents the quintessence of time, distinguished from time in general by a potent intensity. The dynamics of secularisation have attenuated and blurred the boundaries between sacred and profane, to the point that we ask ourselves if it is still legitimate to distinguish between a religious and a profane feast, or whether it is not more proficuous to seek within the feast the sacred dimension of time. Modernity does not lead to the eclipse of the sacred, but rather to its transformation. This book addresses such issues, putting itself forward as a working tool for further study.

    Description: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities.

    Description: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants.

    Description: This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

    Description: This work aims at identifying the historical, cultural, political and strategic reasons that in 1935 led the anarchist Camillo Berneri to write the Constitution of the Italian Federation of Socialist Municipalities (based on the Italian acronym, FICS), an original constitution project with no predecessors within the anarchist movement which, unsurprisingly, remained unpublished for a long time. The research aims at explaining its existence within the Berneri’s intellectual path, interpreting it as the result of a long elaboration of his ideas and operational proposals on libertarian federalism. This maturation is characterized by the presence of different influences, with those shared with Gaetano Salvemini’s concrete and problematic approach being the decisive ones.

    Description: This volume reconstructs Carlo Livi (1823-1877)’s biography, focusing on his medical and psychiatric work and on his path as a man and intellectual who lived during the Italian Risorgimento. Livi was a key figure in Italian psychiatry, halfway between the therapeutic optimism of the early 19th century and the pessimism of post-Darwinian psychiatry, both in the practical aspects and in the theoretical elaboration. The study highlights how, in this case, the moral treatment applied by 19th century psychiatry throughout Europe is linked to the events of the Italian Risorgimento. The moralizing and educational request, as well as the anthropological study of the human being, were aimed at the sick, the insane, at children, at criminals and the Italian people in order to carry out a national and secular project of social regeneration in Italy.

Almost sixty years later, this research has made it possible to recover the memory of Ferroni as an avant-garde scientist also in the field of macromolecules and the possibility offered to him by Natta of a prestigious role as a researcher at his institute in Milan. The archives, even the scientific ones, can reserve surprises of this kind: they are prolific in technical data but also reveal traces of humanity. The volume also includes the joint publication of the two chemists and seven articles by Ferroni presented by Natta at the Accademia dei Lincei.

    Description: The story evokes an imaginary dialogue between a student and the master, after his death. The master is Luigi Crocetti, a well-known and unforgettable figure in the world of libraries. He was a librarian at the National Central Library of Florence, scholar and teacher of librarianship, president of the Italian Library Association in the 1980s. The master's death arouses in the student the desire to carry on a conversation with him about libraries and in particular about subject cataloguing. In these talks, the proposed themes are accompanied by feelings, memories, descriptions of landscapes, simple and naive reflections about life questions. Both of them intend to dispose the story’s protagonist and the reader to listen to the master’s lesson again. Although in narrative form, this text reviews some key passages of the Crocetti’s writings and also intends to contribute to the reconstruction of his intellectual biography. Some essays by the author about his thought and work are reproduced in the appendix.

    Description: This volume reconstructs the events of the private library of the Marquis Subdean Gabriello Riccardi (1705-1798), which at the end of its development will be joined and merged with that of the Family, today known as the Riccardiana Library. The research focuses in particular on the Manuscripts Fund, which was definitely the most relevant and precious part. The final result of the present study has produced both a topographical catalogue, which reconstructs the physical layout that these manuscripts had in their original location, and an alphabetical catalogue, according to the 18th Century original. Finally, the historical essay highlights the events that led this famous library, now unified by Gabriello's will, to save itself from dispersion and remain intact as we know it today. The publication is enriched by a Repertorial Section, available with open access in the digital version of the volume (eBook), which presents a series of documents, catalogues and indexes obtained from the study on the Library of Gabriello Riccardi.

    Description: The Royal Institute of Signore Montalve alla Quiete was born between 1885 and 1886, by the union of the two congregations founded by the venerable Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo: the Montalve di Ripoli and the Montalve alla Quiete. From them inherits the principles and the educational action carried out for over two centuries, bringing them to the threshold of the new millennium. In this analytical inventory are described the papers produced by the new Institute. The core relating to female education is only one of the subjects that this archive can offer: architectural and social transformations, the two world wars, customs and traditions of population are just some examples of the researchs offered and the Tuscan historical frame that the cards draw in a well-defined way.

    Description: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself.

In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director.     Description: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study.     Description: Elegant, lofty, charming, brilliant, bellicose, refined, capricious, superb, temerarious, vain. Giulio Einaudi is an oxymoron. From the extensive literature that has furthered our understanding of his figure, he emerges as the synthesis of divergent behaviours and contrasting inclinations. This oxymoron translates in the features of his publishing house, which integrates diachronicity and current affairs, tradition and newness, scientificity and militancy. The book deepens our knowledge of one of the most neglected aspects of Giulio Einaudi’s outstanding service towards Italian culture: namely his promotion of public libraries in the 1960s in Italy. Our starting point is the establishment of Dogliani’s civic library, dedicated to his father the President Luigi Einaudi. Setting out from this event – which we have retraced with a particular eye towards oral history – the book proposes to rethink the relationship between Einaudi’s view on library project and his cultural programme, which he expressed in the same years through an intense political campaign for the promotion of public access to reading.

    Description: The vitality of a scientific field is usually attested by the fallout that research and publications have on the community of scholars who practice it and, therefore, on the development of the discipline itself and of its methodologies. The degree of “health” of a field of study, as well as its ability to get out of its niche of scholars and to see its validity recognised, is assessed by analysing whether and to what extent the works are read, commented on, cited by scholars from other geographical contexts and / or other scientific branches. The volume presents a research focused on the analysis of the level of internationalisation and vitality of Italian studies in the disciplines related to the study of books and documents, conducted through a series of parallel bibliometric investigations (query of citation databases, searches in Google scholar, application alternative metrics, library catalog analysis).

    Description: The Roman Republic of 1849 is one of the most exciting moment of the heroic season of the Italian Risorgimento, a short adventure in which the contemporaries recognized the opportunity to realize ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy. This research aims to analyses the role played by religion in the political and social experiment that started in Rome after the pope’s escape, when it was necessary to redefine relations between civil and religious authorities, as well as the role of religion itself in society: a task not at all easy if applied to a State reality, where political and religious powers had been superimposed for centuries, but that will set an inescapable precedent for the subsequent attempts to build a secular State.

    Description: Gino Arias (1879-1940), Florentine historian and economist of Israeli origin, was in his later years one of the top theorists of Fascist corporatism, which he came to at the end of an as yet widely unstudied intellectual path. After reconstructing his biography, the book investigates Arias's debut as a law historian, his route towards political economics and subsequent subscription to nationalism, paving the way to his involvement in that Fascist regime of which, paradoxically, he was to be both one of the most feared theorists and most illustrious victims, owing to the exile enforced upon him by the race laws. The appendix to the book offers a wealth of new documentation, including an inventory of his archives, the transcription of 130 letters to Achille Loria and his bibliography.

    Description: The diffusion of Kantian philosophy in the Russian culture was a singularly early event: even the Orthodox ecclesiastical Academies were involved in this process, despite the control exercised by the censorship in defense of the metaphysical and theological tradition. The history and sources of the "philosophy of ecclesiastical academies" are also examined through the analysis of the works of two authors (I.Ja. Vetrinskij and P.D. Jurkevic), who, with their reaction to the Kantian "revolution", attested to the deep awareness of the necessity of a real confrontation with criticism. This investigation is completed by an appendix dedicated to the complex events of Kantian studies in the Russian language during the decades marked by the Soviet regime.

    Description: The fil rouge of the work concerns the transformations of political professionalism, investigated through a particular category of politicians: the mayors of three municipalities in the provincial capitals of Tuscany, elected between 1994 and 2009. The reconstruction of the debate on the phenomenon, the legislative requirements and the regional political geography are the theoretical pillars on which the dual purpose of the research is based: first, to analyse the profile of the mayors in a diachronic perspective, and second, to interpret the different levels of political professionalism. The first perspective allows to illustrate the generational differences between the mayors after the introduction of the law 83/931. The second perspective focuses on the characteristics of the actors - defined on the basis of four dimensions of a continuum - and on the professionalisation of politics.

    Description: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman’s assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage. It also offers the opportunity to undertake countless historical research on facts that concern Florentine territory and the rest of Tuscany.

    Description: Realtà e memoria di una disfatta does not address either the causes of the Six Day War or the consequences that the military conflict had for Israelis and Palestinians, about which much has been written. It focuses instead on the impact of the war on Arab countries, and the weighty legacy left by the defeat of 1967, which has been much less studied. There are several references to this in the short essay by Samir Kassir, L'infelicità araba, published posthumously in Italy in 2006. In his analysis, Kassir warns against falling into the dual trap that has ensnared the Arab world for the last forty years: on the one hand the Orientalist reading that lays the blame on Islam for the delayed modernisation of this part of the world, and on the other the temptation to heap responsibility for all evils on the West. To avoid this risk, as Kassir sees it, the Arabs have to take their destiny into their own hands, shrugging off victimism and coming to terms with modernity.

    Description: Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938, taught at the Royal University of Florence. Fermi's stay in Florence was short and only lasted two academic years (1924-25 and 1925-26); during those years, he taught "Mathematical Physics" and "Rational Mechanics” courses. This volume contributes to the reconstruction of this quite unknown period of Fermi's life, marked however by the publication of the Fermi statistics, which is also the foundation of the physics of semiconductors, and therefore of modern electronics. The text also features Enrico Fermi’s "Lessons of Rational Mechanics” to Science students and to students from the two-year preparatory course for Engineering studies during the aforementioned time span. The topics Enrico Fermi addressed in his lectures include kinematics and point dynamics, kinematics and statics of rigid systems and system statics in general. Lastly, the lessons contain «Lagrangia»’s equations and some elements of hydromechanics. This book is the first of a series of publications associated with the magazine «Il Colle di Galileo» by Firenze University Press.

    Description: This study analyses the crisis and transformations of theocracy as a political model in Europe in the first half of the 18th century. The work focuses on the transition from a positive and normative seventeenth-century consideration of theocracy, associated with the Jewish people, to its description in the 18th century as a universal, negative and primitive model. To this end, three authors are examined in their role of emblematic figures of this change, namely: Jacques Basnage, John Toland and Giambattista Vico. The study then highlights a radicalisation phase in mid-eighteenth-century France in the works by Nicolas Antoine Boulanger, and ends with the description of Boulanger’s theocracy in Diderot and d'Alembert’s Encyclopédie.

This publication analyses the reality of open access from the different points of view of the people who bring it to life: authors, publishers, academic world, legislators, users of knowledge, etc. The University of Florence, which is among the major players in the promotion of open access in Italy, has long been following the march in favour of open access, through the use of the green road with FLORE, its institutional repository, and of the gold road with Firenze University Press (FUP), whose publications have been available through open access since the early 2000s.

    Description: Summer of 1968: two young Spaniards arrive in Rome with a letter and a project to export. They are Francisco (Kiko) Argüello and Carmen Hernández. So, fifty years after its foundation, the Neocatechumenal Way begins, and this volume is among the first historiographical researches about it. The overall picture arising from the comparative analysis of archival documents and unpublished texts places the Neocatechumenal Way within the historical events that affected the Church of Rome from the end of the Second Vatican Council to the present today. Ensuring access to information cannot be limited to 'our' library: it must be a responsibility that concerns the territory where we live and operate, looking to our colleagues who may find themselves in a difficult situation and especially to the people who have difficulties in exercising their rights. The hope is that the transmission of registered knowledge will contribute more and more to the freedom, rights and well-being of all. Will it still take time to understand that investing in libraries means investing in democracy, economic development and the quality of life? As always, the reference framework for understanding and interpreting library problems is that of the comparison with international library traditions, starting from the European continent, as the profession of the librarian today has a theoretical framework and an operational dimension of global reach.

    Description: The aim of this work is to identify the factors which contributed to create Lourdes' success. This analysis starts from the comparison between the 18 apparitions in Lourdes with some similar and contemporary episodes occurring in France, but with a somewhat different outcome, intended as success among the pilgrims. The initial historical, political and cultural contextualization work is accompanied by the analysis of some key aspects of the Catholic Church of that time. In reference to the purpose of the text, two areas are analysed more in-depth: medical science and literature, both closely connected with the question of miracles.

A sort of oncography syllabary characterized by an extraordinary mixture of medical terminology and commonplaces, colloquial expressions and courtly loans from classical languages, foreign idioms, dialects and periphrastic language originated from 'oncologhems' used instead of the word 'cancer', as well as from synaesthesias, tropes, processes, remembrances, olfactory and visual perceptions and the inflation of interrupted works.

The fourth volume on the Collections of the Mineralogy and Lithology Section, published like the previous volumes by the Firenze University Press, fits perfectly in the series dedicated to the collections of the University's Museum System. The first part of the book describes in great detail the paths that led to the formation of the collections, starting with those dating to the Medici period and arriving at the specimens collected during recent expeditions. The second part illustrates and documents the extraordinary specimens of minerals, hardstone carvings and meteorites which represent the material patrimony of this section. Particular attention is given to the holotypes, the Elban Collection and the minerals of pegmatites, as well as the methods and solutions adopted to realize the project of the new museum exhibition set-up. The third and last part describes the studies carried out on the materials: from the minerals of the systematic collections to the rock specimens that recount not only the geodiversity of a region but also the history of a city.

In the era of “political posturing”, when the appearance was worth more than the essence, the understatement characterising Guido Sacconi’s not-so-short activity is even more surprising. A serious person, yet not an aloof one. This becomes easily understandable when reading this ironic reconstruction of politics 'as seen from the inside', made up of people in the flesh, with many strengths and flaws, who are mercilessly and tastefully described in these pages. In these same pages, Sacconi also has some bones to pick, which he must have collected during his career. Therefore, in a psychoanalytic key, Guido shows the Puer inside of him to those who have always seen him as a senex.

    Description: The subject around which the contributions in this volume gravitate is the creation of a higher institute of engineering studies in Florence in the late nineteenth-century. On the eve of the unification of Italy, Florence was a promising centre for a Polytechnic, in view of the experience of the Corpo di Ingegneri di Acque e Strade, the precocious railway building, the importance of the mining sector and the solidity of the Istituto Tecnico Toscano. Despite this, unlike what took place in Milan and in Turin, the Istituto Tecnico Toscano was not transformed into a Polytechnic for the training of engineers. The reasons for this non-development can be traced to the lack of "industrialist" propensities in the managerial group that emerged victorious from the "peaceful revolution" of 1859, to a desire for independence from the national academic system built on the Casati law, and to a local demand for engineering skills that was less dynamic than expected. Consequently, the prevailing winds were those of "normalisation" blowing from the government, the universities and the most prestigious Colleges of Engineers. Nevertheless, Florence continued to represent an important technological centre, especially in relation to railway infrastructures, public works, and the mechanical engineering industries (for example Pignone and Galileo). In the end it was not until one hundred years after unification that the city finally became the seat of a Faculty of Engineering.

    Description: In the context of the intense religious and social renewal known as “Gregorian Reform”, the Camaldoli Hermitage and the Vallombrosa Abbey, both located in the Tuscan territory, gave rise to two movements of reform inspired by the spirituality of the respective founders, which later became congregations belonging to the benedictine family. Motivated by common instances, the Camaldolese and the Vallombrosan Orders were similar in some of their essential features and in the dynamics of their expansion. This statement has been the starting point of this work, which aims to formulate a comparative overview of the territorial spread of these reforms in Tuscany, by recording the known settlements and making an inventory of the religious communities interested by this phenomenom, in order to gather a broad range of examples of the way these movements interacted with the local situations in the different areas of the region. The text is enriched by a carthographic appendix illustrating the chronology of these congregations’ development in medieval Tuscany.

What makes a nation possess a certain character? Authors are divided on this matter: according some it is the climate (both for the influence it exerts and for the reaction it provokes), according someone else it is history, and we find among the possible causes language, race, territory, religion, institutions, customs or a set of all (or part of) these elements. While opposing the Lutheran doctrine, which favoured to the use of vernacular both in the Scriptures and in the liturgy, and keeping the knowledge of the mysteries of the faith only for those able to understand Latin, Italian bishops and inquisitors used vernacular to transmit papal edicts and conciliar decrees.     Description: The archive of the Italian National Association of University Teachers sheds light on the little-known contribution a vanguard of university teachers gave to the reform process of Italian Universities, which started in 1968 after the failure of the Italian bill n. 2314. ANDU immediately identified itself in Giorgio Spini’s leadership: he was Professor of history at the Faculty of Education of the University of Florence, and he brought together union leadership and constant political and cultural work, which could show the problem with universities was a long-term matter. The student movement has been one of ANDU’s main dialogue partners from the beginning, and the association has always supported their initiatives, condemning the police repression and the closing of the academic authorities. In this context, the right to education becomes the primary goal of the university reform, not only for overcoming its classist nature, but also for significantly contributing to question the relations among classes and the balance of power in the Italian society.
