    Beschreibung: Ukrainian, unlike other East Slavic languages, is characterized by the active use of significant lexical components derived from Romance, Germanic, and West Slavic languages. This article presents a brief overview of the presence of Romance language lexical elements in Ukrainian and lays the groundwork for further research on the Ukrainian alloglot lexis and the comparison of Ukrainian with Russian and Belarusian.

    Beschreibung: The evolution of the Italian health system, which went from the establishment of the National Health Service in 1978 to the corporate management introduced with the reforms of the 1990s, requires a thorough knowledge of the effects of organizational change on the medical profession. Starting from this consideration, this volume focuses on the results of the corporatising process in terms of professional identity. The research, conducted among medical specialists operating in the territorial structures of two Tuscan Health Authorities, shows a transitioning figure, which hints at a new form of medical professionalism.

    Beschreibung: The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city.

    Beschreibung: Despite the evident importance of the youth question in the ambit of modern society, in practice the consideration of young people as a category of consumers frequently prevails over the valorisation of their role as citizens. This survey – triggered by a synergy between the Provincial Authority and the University – focuses the attitudes and orientations of young people, both Italian and immigrants, in the Province of Florence. The objective is to bring to the fore the dynamic and more strictly civic aspect, so as to explore themes such as the shifts in values and the security, identity and participation of the new generations. The analysis effectively brings to light a widespread ambivalence, comprising both the innovative characteristics of individualism and other features that hark back to traditionally consolidated legacies. What emerges is the sense of a social mutation that is already under way, but still in transition, in which young people play a role of considerable significance.

    Beschreibung: Corpi globali addresses the recent phenomenon of the proliferation of sexual services on payment, from street-walking, more visible and "disturbing", to the secluded world of top escorts, and comprising the broad range of services offered through computer technologies. The practice of sexual relations on payment has become widespread, every year involving millions of clients belonging to all social classes. This appears to be a reflection of a broader cultural model that conveys an image of sexuality divorced from affection and sentiment, which can be bought and sold like any other commodity. Which dimensions structure and supply the offer of bodies on sale? What are the reasons that induce people to purchase depersonalised and commercialised sexual services? The authors analyse the prostitution market in Italy, focusing attention on the entities that compose it, from the independent prostitutes to those who are subjected to exploitation and the criminals involved in the traffic. Reflecting on the link between demand and supply, the book offers an updated picture of the most significant changes that have taken place in the "world" of prostitution over the last decade.

    Beschreibung: In recent years the subject of energy planning has come to occupy a role of growing importance, both in relation to the escalating costs, scarcity and impact of energy procurement and consumption and in relation to the increasingly broad future prospects generated by the development of technologies for the exploitation of renewable sources. Within this framework, the development and use of the latter frequently appears to be without benchmarks for integration into the broader picture of territorial planning, and hence of coordination with other human activities and territorial resources. With this in mind, this book aims to compose the elements of a perspective in which energy planning is seen not as an ulterior and separate form of planning, but as an activity integrated within the more general instruments for the government of the territory, and more specifically one that employs the resources of the territory in a sustainable manner also with a view to endogenous local development.

    Beschreibung: The volume aims at offering an overview of the studies on the flâneur. It consists of three parts and an appendix. The first part defines the figure of the flâneur. In particular, the flâneur’s characteristics are first analysed with respect to a series of oxymorons, to then be declined in relation to some themes, namely: the flâneur’s slowness as a combined expression of body and mind, the moods of living one's condition, the birth of the flâneuse, the relationship between the flâneur and other figures at opposite ends of the social ladder, the love and hate between the flâneur and tourists, the constraints imposed on the flâneur in the society of control and, finally, flânerie as a lifestyle. In the second part, the focus shifts to urban places as privileged contexts of action and reflection for the flâneur. In particular, the discussed topics are the “genius loci”, the possibility of analysing places through the forms of reverie which undermine the recurrent images marked by accredited methodologies, and finally the inevitably individual in-depth study paths leading to flânerie, which require a more direct contribution than the one given by subjects who practice it. Specific attention is paid to flânerie as the inspection carried out by architects and urban planners, with the additional aim of designing the urban territory for the involvement of the entire community. The third part is dedicated to an illustration of the various ways a flânerie can be achieved. Various types of flânerie are identified and described: from the free itinerant one, to the shadowing and the observation from a fixed place. In this part, there are also some reflections regarding the relationship between flâneur, houses and objects, as well as some final considerations on the development prospects of research on the flâneur himself. Finally, in the appendix, there is a discussion on the protocol in use to create some flâneries with students from different departments and from different Italian universities, followed by some concrete examples of flânerie in compliance with the definition given in the third part.

    Beschreibung: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, soundscape, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time.

    Beschreibung: This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

    Beschreibung: Notable among the stylistic tools adopted by Dostoevskij to disseminate the values that he considered crucial for the moral revival of contemporary Russian society is the use of the aphorism. This article explores the origins of the renowned maxim “If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself”, a phrase that recurs either in this form or with some variation in the literary and journalistic texts that Dostoyevsky authored towards the end of his life.     Beschreibung: This book illustrates the study carried out to define the project guidelines for the river park of the Arno and its tributaries the Pesa and the Elsa in the Empoli area, and has been produced by liaison between the territorial Planning Department and the Municipalities of the Empoli district. The integrated analysis of local resources scheduled, on the one hand the identification of the criticalities of the territorial system, and on the other the conscious and distinctly interpretational representation of the local cultural bedrock. The definition of scenarios for the entire territory has made it possible to demonstrate the outcomes of complex dynamics in a synthetic manner, moving on to the individual integrated projects and specific sectorial policies. It is precisely this recourse to scenarios, seen as the embodiment of a phase of project sharing and definition, that is the innovative feature of the «River Contract» proposed as a tool for the management and implementation of the plan.

    Beschreibung: «European democracy doesn't need national heroes, ready to die for their homeland, but critical, active citizens who together develop and build the model of society we want to live in.» European integration represents an extraordinary political experiment, which calls for a critical review of the tools and the lexicon traditionally used by sociology to analyse democracy. In this study the risks and opportunities of the passage from the nation-State to transnationality and original institutional structures, such as the system of multilevel governance, are discussed in the light of a wide-ranging analysis of the transformations of the social bond and of political cultures. With reference to the principles of deliberative and cosmopolitan democracy, focus is then placed in particular on the dynamics of democratic self-construction from the grassroots of European society, which develop from the construction of a transnational public sphere.

    Beschreibung: This work explores the relationship between Croatia and Italy in a study of literary journals extending from the period of the Illyrian movement to Modernism (1835-1903). Moving away from a national and philological approach, we focus on interculturality and imagology. Our conclusions unfold at the intersection of these two fields, as well as “at the edge of literature and philosophy” (in Derrida’s terms), where the relationship between Croatian and Italian cultural has been shaped according to various factors – literary, political, historical and also psychological.

It is on this process of innovation that the essays in this volume focus, bringing to light the consequences that derive for the mapping of policies aimed at sustaining innovative initiatives.

    Beschreibung: This article examine handwriting textbooks from 18th-century Europe. In 1774 the court of Vienna charged Johann Ignaz Felbiger with reforming the schools and his book on penmanship (1775) became the standard reference for how to write. In 1776 the Court sought a book on penmanship to be used specifically in Serbian and Vlach schools; the textbook of Zaharija Orfelin (1778) came into being to fill this need. The textbooks of both Felbiger and Orphelin have their basis in Felbiger’s first book on penmanship (1768). We also explore the possibility that other European handwriting manuals served as models for earlier works by Orfelin (1759, 1776).

    Beschreibung: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome’s pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14).

    Beschreibung: This book was born as a “work in in progress” and collects many of the public presentations of Giacomo Becattini’s book “La cosicenza dei luoghi. Il territorio come soggetto corale” (“The Conscience of Places. The territory as a choral subject”), published by Donzelli in 2015. The presentations inspired great methodological passion, concrete perspectives and also criticism. In fact, the text of Becattini has raised issues of great importance on the perspectives of local development, by projecting them on the very future of human societies in a period of crisis and global uncertainty. The richness, the plurality of accents and the depth of the debate that has developed ensure that the collection lives a “life of its own” even with respect to the book of origin. Becattini’s disappearance, which occurred just as the volume was being edited, leaves a huge void but stimulates even more the debate on this fresco, painted by several artists on the trace of his recent work.

    Beschreibung: The Erasmus programme is one of the outstanding Community initiatives, even if it is spoken little of outside the world of the university. This book, one of the first devoted to the subject, analyses the virtuous effects that the programme has had on the university system, the geography of student flows, and the motivations and propositions of those who have taken part in it. The reports of the students indicate the Erasmus as a 'bubble of experience' and the book explores these inner experiences through a sociological approach, illustrating the vast potential in terms of the moulding of a 'homo novus Europaeus'. The data gathered prompt a reflection on the redefinition of the role of the student when he or she directly experiences the comparison with a context different and distant from that of origin, to which he or she is nevertheless destined to return. From this perspective, the Erasmus experience assumes the significance of a sort of temporary upheaval of status open to forms of 'experimentation of identity'.

The move provided the opportunity for bringing together the collections that were scattered over seven service points and in about a dozen other sites closed to the public. At the same time, it provided the opportunity for reconsidering the services on offer, reorganising them on the basis of the characteristics of the new site. The first section tells how the library was conceived and planned, with the librarians' working groups preparing the move and projecting the changes to be made in the new site. The second part tackles the problems of organisation and management of the services in the new library.

    Beschreibung: The article addresses textual decisions made by Čechov’s editors in publishing his early short stories. We demonstrate that choices made by other editors and translators has depended crucially on the configuration of his texts found in academic editions of Čechov’s Complete Works. Specifically, in the volumes that these editions devote to the young Čechov, editors place what are in fact the first versions of these short stories in the critical appendix, while furnishing as the featured examples of these texts’ versions that Čechov had reviewed and retouched for collections published during his lifetime. As a result, works of the “young Čechov” are often actually works of the “mature Čechov”, a situation that has led to a worldwide misunderstanding.

    Beschreibung: The initial idea for this volume was born while rethinking the organisation of the University of Florence following the recent reform, with the aim of retracing the evolution of the Faculty of Engineering throughout its 40 years, telling and documenting its history, collecting memories and documents from a period characterised by significant changes. The research carried out by the curators and many colleagues has progressively broadened the horizon of the work to collect not only the contents of the academic history but also those of the "civil" history of the Faculty, observing its laborious growth, affirmation and consolidation in the Florentine University, and also noting the relationships with the social and economic context (the city, the region, the national and international involvement) that surrounds a significant collective entity such as “our” Faculty of Engineering. This made it possible to explore and document relevant areas that are fundamental for a non-trivial knowledge of how many actors have crossed the scenario of the Faculty and of which phenomena the Faculty itself has been an observer and protagonist. Thus, the work has been enriched with a great number of contents, declined in each chapter with pleasant energy and that are difficult to summarise in a purely historical or celebratory paradigm. If we try and visualise the readers of this volume, we think of those who will find there the path of their life, who will there find the roots of the present and who will want to discover the reasons for the future.

    Beschreibung: This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

    Beschreibung: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants.

    Beschreibung: The leitmotif running through this book is a meditation on the various iconographic representations constructed in the course of research and during the drafting of planning instruments on various scales. There is special focus on the structure of drafting processes, a number of illustrative methodological syntheses and the attempt to adequately record the legends of the maps. The aim of all this is to restore the central role of the production of images in the experience recounted, and their importance within the project for the territory. To this extent, we can say that this book is an illustrated – through the products of research and the operational activities of what are frequently large and articulated groups – approach to the task of construction and organisation of the knowledge of local contexts, materialising in the attempt to delineate guidelines and scenarios for a sustainable future. Representations that are diversified in terms of method and of scale, of users and of aims, offer the cue for addressing issues that are central to the discipline, such as the need to render interpretations explicit and restore the quality of the contexts, the need to construct shared visions collectively, and from grassroots, the need to ensure that the graphic documentation can efficaciously perform differently modulated regulatory tasks. This is a process not necessarily oriented towards ameliorating the iconographic quality of the images, but rather towards consolidating and refining the languages, as well as achieving an enhanced awareness of the potential – and obviously also the limitations – of this type of disciplinary product.

    Beschreibung: This study represents the continuation and in part the completion of a research study within an Islamic educational and philanthropic institution, currently located in Greek territory. Through repeated inspections and a long work of comparison, not only have the volumes kept at the institution of Kavála been catalogued, but the composition of the entire library has also been almost entirely reconstructed, identifying additional funds belonging to it. Furthermore, the research examines the implications useful for delineating both the cultural profile of the Institution and a particular historical phase for the methodological and content innovations introduced in the transmission of knowledge within the Islamic world.

    Beschreibung: The developments in the globalization process, the increased strength of European integration and the improvements in communication technologies have put the convergence of institutional structures of the different capitalist systems at the centre of the debate. In this perspective, banks play a crucial role. In the new context, movable assets become indeed increasingly profitable, which reduces the weight of traditional activities in the financial statements of banking institutions. Starting from these premises, the volume investigates the extent of the de-intermediation and financialisation processes of the main Italian banks, deepening their connection with the cultural, relational and political dimension.

    Beschreibung: Over the past 30 years, all European countries have been affected by reorganization processes concerning their higher education systems. In this volume, two aspects of this type of reorganization are discussed: changes in governance models and differentiation processes within the various higher education systems. The new governance models of higher education systems are based on three pillars: autonomy, evaluation and competition. Everywhere, universities were managed in a more business-like fashion, strengthening the central leadership and reducing the power of the collective bodies. In Italy, autonomy has developed in a distorted way, and for a long time has not been accompanied by evaluation and competition. In addition to reforming governance, European governments have responded to the students’ mass demand for university access with different backgrounds and ambitions, differentiating the higher education systems in the concerned countries. There was a first surge of differentiation in the 1960s and 1970s, and a second one took place in the late 1990s. Italy was an exception, and in this lies the origin of most of the problems of Italian universities, which the volume discusses while also offering possible solutions.

The essay proposes and tests a hypothesis of representation of the "statute of places", that is, of an instrument regulating the transformations of the city and of the territory based on the recognition of common values, a little binding, but indicative for the determination of plans and projects.

    Beschreibung: This article examines travel letters that Ljubomir Nenadović (1826-1895) wrote from Switzerland (1847), Italy (1850-1851) and Germany (1870). Marking three different phases in the literary biography of their author, these texts provide evidence of the travel letter’s polyphonic nature. We argue that the dynamic shape and narrative texture of Nenadović’s letters find their source in the nature of the differences that he observes and identifies, differences that distinguish these countries from his Serbian homeland and, more generally, from the cultural and geographic space of the Slavs.

    Beschreibung: The lagging behind of the Italian economy in the sphere of technologically advanced manufacture represents a significant factor in the debate on the risks of the country's decline. Nevertheless we know relatively little about the diffusion in Italy of companies specialising in information technology. The research presented in this book – the outcome of a national project – reveals how this sector is dominated by small businesses, concentrated in a number of urban areas (the cases studied are Pisa, Florence, Turin, Osimo and Castelfidardo). It emerges that the social networks linking the businessmen with University researchers are crucial to an understanding of the processes of innovation. But what is equally important is the capacity of the collective entities, both public and private, to provide the entire country with the services that are indispensable for the development of enterprise.

    Beschreibung: This volume, born from the collaboration of thirty-four scholars and trade union representatives, has a dual purpose. Firstly, to propose the analysis and theses on the human and political meaning of work contained in Bruno Trentin’s main book La città del lavoro (2nd ed., Firenze University Press, 2014), in the current phase of social transformations and theoretical uncertainties. Secondly, to promote a reflection testing the book’s fertility and topicality in order to deepen the processes at work at the start of the 21st century, in the belief that the pages written in 1997 by one of the greatest representatives of the history of the CGIL represent a 'classic' of the socio-political thought of the 20th century. The emerging result is surprising in many ways, and corresponds to the extraordinary richness of Trentin’s project, as well as to the political and trade-unionist ability of its author.     Beschreibung: The article explores the cultural and linguistic interrelationship of Russia, Armenia and Europe through the lens of quotation and intertextuality in Andrei Bitov’s Armenian Lessons (first edition 1969). This text is the ideal site for demonstrating the importance of quotation in the author’s prose. We address two different aspects of this question, first Bitov’s literary and cultural intertextual references; second, his quotations from everyday language. In both cases, the “language of the Other” seeps into the text, forming bridges that connect apparently distant cultures.

    Beschreibung: In Russia, the term “Europeanism” first appeared in the 19th century. The russkij evropeec (European Russian) received a European upbringing that incorporated the moral and cultural values developed within European civilization since the 14th century and can be seen as an embodiment of the European spirit. We argue that the apogee of russkij evropeec may be represented by Maksim Maksimovič Kovalevskij (1851-1916), historian, jurist, sociologist, ethnographer, and political activist, who died on the eve of Empire’s fall. This article examines the components of the European idea as they are are found in the autobiographical writings of this outstanding intellectual.

    Beschreibung: The Faculty of Political Science of Florence – the oldest school of political and social science in Italy, founded in 1875 by Carlo Alfieri and named after his father Cesare – has a tradition of study that is widely recognised, even abroad, to which the cultural project of this series is related. The first book is dedicated to the research activity carried out by Luciano Cavalli and the profound traces that it has left on Italian and European sociology. Now Professor Emeritus, Luciano Cavalli taught and worked at the "Cesare Alfieri" for many years from 1966 on. Around his commitment as a "pioneer" of sociology in Italy he mustered an array of sociologists, active in different universities, many of whom have opened up new frontiers within the discipline and have successfully cultivated a dialogue with the other social sciences, as the contents of the book clearly illustrate. This extensive collection of essays offers a clear image of the fertile sociological work that burgeoned around the scientific commitment of Luciano Cavalli and was often generated by his own action of cultural stimulus. The three sections into which the book is divided – Portrait of an intellectual, The sociology of political phenomena and Sociological theory and social change – address issues of great relevance to the contemporary sociological debate. The rapport between the democratic construction of the modern State and the role and functions of the leadership, the relations between citizens and leaders, the various forms of the democratic institutional structures and the transformations of political culture are interwoven with the Neo-Weberian interpretation of the charisma theory that Cavalli masterfully proposed. Also particularly significant and topical are the critical reflections made by writers whose scientific itinerary has run parallel to that of Cavalli for decisive stretches, and who were and are bound to his teaching when they tackle arguments such as the changes in urban life, immigration and the problems of economic, political and social development in our times.

    Beschreibung: The story evokes an imaginary dialogue between a student and the master, after his death. The master is Luigi Crocetti, a well-known and unforgettable figure in the world of libraries. He was a librarian at the National Central Library of Florence, scholar and teacher of librarianship, president of the Italian Library Association in the 1980s. The master's death arouses in the student the desire to carry on a conversation with him about libraries and in particular about subject cataloguing. In these talks, the proposed themes are accompanied by feelings, memories, descriptions of landscapes, simple and naive reflections about life questions. Both of them intend to dispose the story’s protagonist and the reader to listen to the master’s lesson again. Although in narrative form, this text reviews some key passages of the Crocetti’s writings and also intends to contribute to the reconstruction of his intellectual biography. Some essays by the author about his thought and work are reproduced in the appendix.

    Beschreibung: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation.

    Beschreibung: This volume reconstructs the events of the private library of the Marquis Subdean Gabriello Riccardi (1705-1798), which at the end of its development will be joined and merged with that of the Family, today known as the Riccardiana Library. The research focuses in particular on the Manuscripts Fund, which was definitely the most relevant and precious part. The final result of the present study has produced both a topographical catalogue, which reconstructs the physical layout that these manuscripts had in their original location, and an alphabetical catalogue, according to the 18th Century original. Finally, the historical essay highlights the events that led this famous library, now unified by Gabriello's will, to save itself from dispersion and remain intact as we know it today. The publication is enriched by a Repertorial Section, available with open access in the digital version of the volume (eBook), which presents a series of documents, catalogues and indexes obtained from the study on the Library of Gabriello Riccardi.

    Beschreibung: The Royal Institute of Signore Montalve alla Quiete was born between 1885 and 1886, by the union of the two congregations founded by the venerable Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo: the Montalve di Ripoli and the Montalve alla Quiete. From them inherits the principles and the educational action carried out for over two centuries, bringing them to the threshold of the new millennium. In this analytical inventory are described the papers produced by the new Institute. The core relating to female education is only one of the subjects that this archive can offer: architectural and social transformations, the two world wars, customs and traditions of population are just some examples of the researchs offered and the Tuscan historical frame that the cards draw in a well-defined way.

    Beschreibung: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself.

    Beschreibung: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix.

    Beschreibung: This article explores Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna’s poem Wyznanie (Admission) in light of the author’s multilingual education and constant movement across national borders. Iłłakowiczówna, who was opposed to nationalism approaches and considered Polish tradition to be of a piece with European culture, translated into Polish several masterpieces from French, English, German, Russian, Romanian, and Hungarian literary traditions. In order to demonstrate the role that different literary traditions and the visual arts played in writings such as Wyznanie, we also investigate Iłłakowiczówna’s paratexts – her memoirs, talks, and letters.

    Beschreibung: The Croatian Moderna is usually defined as the moment when Croatian literature catches up with the literary trends that were current in Europe at that time. This “turn to Europe” was made possible by a series of historical events as well as by the experiences of a number of Croatian students living abroad, who encouraged the transnational debate that would eventually revolutionize Croatian literary culture. We argue, using the terms of Pierre Bourdieu, that the transnational and cosmopolitan nature of Moderna made possible the genesis of an autonomous Croatian literary field.

    Beschreibung: Despite having been written at different times and being characterised by a great variety of subject and a multiplicity of approach, the essays of Gabriele Mazzitelli gathered here all appear to have been triggered by a precise and organic project of exploration. In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

    Beschreibung: This volume presents the results of a research on clerks and managers in large companies of the engineering sector (at the FCA and Leonardo centres), which she conducted using a participatory research methodology. The survey aimed at analysing the changes in professionalism, organization, quality of work and relationship with the trade union in recent years with regard to the main employment domains (administration, commerce, research and development, production support), in the face of the progressive disappearance of a homogeneous professional and social identity of the employment world and of the new 4.0 technologies’ growing impact. The research was conducted with qualitative (interviews and focus) and quantitative (a survey of workers) research methods, and revealed discussions and comparisons between researchers, social actors from the involved companies (trade unionists and managers) and a group of scholars who followed the whole process.

    Beschreibung: With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional’nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense.

    Beschreibung: This article argues that the traditional picture of Russian Futurists as fiercely opposed to this war does not correspond to reality. We begin by examining the general historical background for Marinetti’s notorious motto “War as the World’s only Hygiene” and identify echoes of this conception in articles that Vladimir Majakovskij published in the autumn of 1914. Nationalistic and panslavic ideas, coupled with anti-German sentiments, characterized the early years of Velimir Chlebnikov’s literary activity; we explore these ideas and Chlebnikov’s gradual passage from this belligerent vision to his utopian project for a world without wars.

    Beschreibung: After the Second World War, the economies of advanced Countries have long been characterized by inclusive economic growth. In recent decades, on the other hand, there has been a steady increase in inequalities and a worsening for low-income social groups. What is the possibility of rebuilding a more inclusive development like that of the post-war three decades? Is it a viable road? And under what conditions? Or should we instead speculate that divorce is inevitable between economic growth and social cohesion in advanced democracies? There is no sure answer to this question, but it can be a good exercise, especially for those who believe that inclusive development is an essential component of the quality and stability of democracies, asking themselves under what conditions we can try to pursue this goal. The path proposed in this text focuses, in a comparative key, on the significant differences in the forms of economic and social regulation between the various advanced democracies that are reflected in more or less inclusive development paths and models of capitalism. Why have some countries managed to better defend the conditions for inclusive development over the past three decades? Through which economic and social regulatory choices? Moreover, another overlooked question is worth asking. How has politics created consensus around these choices and made them possible, while in other contexts it has supported growth accompanied by greater inequalities? What is certain is that giving up the goal of finding a more satisfactory balance between economic growth and social cohesion not only jeopardizes economic development, but also weakens and impoverishes democratic institutions.

    Beschreibung: The strategy of flexicurity was adopted as a model by the European Union and proposed to all the Member States as a solution for addressing the challenges connected with the competitiveness and instability of the markets, with a view to enhancing employment levels and maintaining social cohesion. The various contributions in this book analyse the concept of flexicurity and its effective feasibility in different institutional contexts, in particular Italy and Spain and – at regional level – in Tuscany and Catalonia. The consequence of the variety of employment and social security models is that the meanings and manifestations of flexicurity are highly divergent, even in cases as analogous as Spain and Italy, since the different contexts generate significant differences. The overall analysis demonstrates that the forms of regulation and organisation of the social institutions, and their complementary nature, have a major impact on the relations between forms of flexibility and security, and do not always give rise to the virtuous process of flexicurity.

    Beschreibung: Elegant, lofty, charming, brilliant, bellicose, refined, capricious, superb, temerarious, vain. Giulio Einaudi is an oxymoron. From the extensive literature that has furthered our understanding of his figure, he emerges as the synthesis of divergent behaviours and contrasting inclinations. This oxymoron translates in the features of his publishing house, which integrates diachronicity and current affairs, tradition and newness, scientificity and militancy. The book deepens our knowledge of one of the most neglected aspects of Giulio Einaudi’s outstanding service towards Italian culture: namely his promotion of public libraries in the 1960s in Italy. Our starting point is the establishment of Dogliani’s civic library, dedicated to his father the President Luigi Einaudi. Setting out from this event – which we have retraced with a particular eye towards oral history – the book proposes to rethink the relationship between Einaudi’s view on library project and his cultural programme, which he expressed in the same years through an intense political campaign for the promotion of public access to reading.

    Beschreibung: The vitality of a scientific field is usually attested by the fallout that research and publications have on the community of scholars who practice it and, therefore, on the development of the discipline itself and of its methodologies. The degree of “health” of a field of study, as well as its ability to get out of its niche of scholars and to see its validity recognised, is assessed by analysing whether and to what extent the works are read, commented on, cited by scholars from other geographical contexts and / or other scientific branches. The volume presents a research focused on the analysis of the level of internationalisation and vitality of Italian studies in the disciplines related to the study of books and documents, conducted through a series of parallel bibliometric investigations (query of citation databases, searches in Google scholar, application alternative metrics, library catalog analysis).

    Beschreibung: “L’agricoltura è la prima delle arti” was born from a project, from the conscious modification of a context, using knowledge which had been shared and accumulated over time. Contemporary agriculture, the daughter of the 'green revolution', of Fordism and its crisis, turned its back on the knowledge that agriculture was able to produce not only food, but also environmental protection and aesthetic quality. The texts collected in this volume are intended to encourage reflections and practices in the various areas of territory and landscape planning and design - on the university, political, technical, professional and administrative levels - which can lead the world of agriculture to regain a central role in outlining new relationships between inhabitants and territory. In these texts, the agricultural landscape represents an opportunity to produce a context where it is pleasant to live, with an approach far from the aesthetical drift of a 'picturesque’ and imaginary misunderstanding; an approach which is however careful towards a contextual aesthetic, arising within and from the rural world.

    Beschreibung: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman’s assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage. It also offers the opportunity to undertake countless historical research on facts that concern Florentine territory and the rest of Tuscany.

    Beschreibung: In recent years, numerous reflections have pushed on the importance of using agricultural parks to recreate reciprocal relationships between urban and rural realities, through the enhancement of their proximity. The parks can also be an opportunity to experiment with new forms of planning on a territorial scale, oriented towards the construction of unitary and coherent morphological, functional and environmental scenarios. This volume offers a reflection on these issues by sharing the results of a design experience involving the School of Territory studies of Empoli (Degree in Urban and Territory Planning) and the School of territorial engineering of Clermont Ferrand (AgroParisTech ENGREF). The scenarios arising from the reflection synthesize these two approaches, integrating the interpretation of equities with the processes of diagnostic territorial and with the construction of shared territorialities.

    Beschreibung: The introduction of the concept of structural invariant in territorial and urban planning has encountered numerous application problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate the reasons and formulate a new definition capable of overcoming them. At the center of the analysis is the relationship between crucial concepts in the interpretation of the territory: development sustainability, resource, space, place, place identity, status, spatio-temporal territorial structures, and structural invariants intended as an instrument to produce and reproduce the social and environmental identity and quality of the territory. The fulcrum is the organization and functioning of the territory, the spatio-temporal processes and the actors who created them. And from intangible, but objective values, it is necessary to take the moves: the real estate values and the values attributed by the different population groups, in terms of memory, attribution of meaning and identity.

    Beschreibung: The literary essay Treblinskij ad (The Hell of Treblinka), written by Vasilij Grossman and first published in the journal Znamja in 1944, circulated widely at the end of World War II, with editions appearing in several different languages. This article examines how Treblinskij ad spread across Europe and the United States during the Nuremberg Trials. We focus on the English, French, and German translations of the text that appeared between 1945 and 1947, and compare these translations with the versions of Grossman’s essay that were published in Russia.

    Beschreibung: The territory is constantly being torn by thousands of conflicting interests and, as a common good, it is in growing need of a unitary planning, suitable for the people living, working and consuming in it: an amount of suitability including urban places, city networks, rivers, valleys, agricultural areas and coastal hinterlands. Compared to the architectural and urban project, the territorial project has much more episodic and sectoral disciplinary rules. This volume is the Tuscan outcome of a national research on the "territorial project", and provides the concept of urban bioregion as a methodology which can integrate analyses and projects on: the environmental prerequisites of the settlement, the reconfiguration of synergies between city and countryside, the polycentric rebalancing of urban systems, locally-based economic and energy systems, forms of self-government for local and self-sustainable development starting from the rules for the enhancement of the territory’s heritage.

    Beschreibung: The stories and interpretations of participation that make up this book are the result of research carried out during the drafting of the new law on participation, subsequently approved by the Tuscan Regional Authority (L.R. 69/07). The context is presented in two introductory essays that discuss some of the most relevant issues of participation This is followed by a section consisting of thirty-eight factsheets that critically address several of the Tuscan participatory experiences, broken down into five interpretational 'boxes': governance, decisional democracy, participatory planning, social self-organisation and conflict. Emerging from the cases analysed is a variegated landscape of experiences of interactive planning, with lights and shadows, significant results and difficulties, related primarily to the implementation phase of the projects. The authors seek to recount and valorise certain of the more original and innovative pioneering experiences, and to offer food for thought for the greater spread and enhanced efficacy of participatory practices, interactive planning and social self-organisation.

Open access is a movement born in the last century with the aim of improving the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Over the last ten years, the movement has experienced a growth of interest due to the positions taken by the most important research institutes of the world, and to the legislative interventions of political and academic bodies. This publication analyses the reality of open access from the different points of view of the people who bring it to life: authors, publishers, academic world, legislators, users of knowledge, etc. The University of Florence, which is among the major players in the promotion of open access in Italy, has long been following the march in favour of open access, through the use of the green road with FLORE, its institutional repository, and of the gold road with Firenze University Press (FUP), whose publications have been available through open access since the early 2000s.

The paradigm of ecosystem services is moving a step in the right direction in considering the multiplicity of benefits offered to mankind by the environment, but lends itself to quantitative drifts that risk extending commodification to the world of nature. This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services.

    Beschreibung: Over recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the various possible forms of poverty and housing vulnerability: from the total lack of shelter of the homeless to the risk of losing their home that now threatens numerous families in medium-low income brackets. At the same time, the traditional linear and standardised housing policies appear no longer adequate to address these phenomena. This book contains the results of a study entrusted by the Tuscan Regional Authority to a working group from the University of Florence and the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci. The research explores the field of practices for self-production of housing in Italy and the world, through a critical selection of significant experiences, revealing the architectural and social creativity exploited in a large variety of collective actions. The book also contains a reconstruction of housing problems in Tuscany and an overview of alternative approaches to housing policy. The last section is devoted to the research-action on the occupation of the Luzzi, the abandoned sanatorium on the border between Florence and Sesto Fiorentino, a case that illustrates the most significant contradictions and dilemmas gravitating around the housing issue for the new poor: the problem of homeless immigrants; the difficulty of the authorities in managing problems of extreme housing poverty; the role of the associations and organisations of social mediation, and the inherent complexity of achieving a participatory approach to social and town planning research.

    Beschreibung: Alfredo Serrai in the volume Gabriel Naudé, Helluo Librorum, e l'Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque, publish the version from French to Italian of the first exposition of the Librarianship as a discipline, together with an ample introduction both historical and conceptual. With the arguments and the praxis introduced and explained by Naudé, in the first decades of the XVII century has begun the discipline “Librarianship as the science of the selection and of the order of books” that implement their disposition in a library. With Naudé the library becomes not only the proper image of the science, but a true testimonial of the verity against its manipulations and errors. In such a vision of both the research and morality, the naudean philosophical principles can be properly situated in the frame of a mature preilluminism.

    Beschreibung: According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building.

    Beschreibung: This work analyses the relation between social inequality and health by focusing on the social processes and individual mechanisms that construct it within the area of action of the economic sphere, the cultural sphere and the social and territorial sphere. Within this framework, the body is conceived as a link between the physical, biological and material dimensions and the social, relational and emotional dimensions. At the same time, the proposal is to go beyond the well-known relationship between economic resources/social position and levels of health/life expectation, concentrating on the specific social and psychological dynamics generated by the availability of socio-economic capital. The over-simplified perspective of the social gradient of health is overtaken by an analysis of the relational dimension of the individual and his/her reference groups, and finally by appraising both the individual and collective aspects that can be traced to the social and political context and to the different welfare systems.

    Beschreibung: In the activity of the librarian, the technical dimension, essential for working with professionalism, cannot ignore or be separated from commitment, attention to civil rights and the way in which they are lived and practiced within the community to which they belong. Ensuring access to information cannot be limited to 'our' library: it must be a responsibility that concerns the territory where we live and operate, looking to our colleagues who may find themselves in a difficult situation and especially to the people who have difficulties in exercising their rights. The hope is that the transmission of registered knowledge will contribute more and more to the freedom, rights and well-being of all. Will it still take time to understand that investing in libraries means investing in democracy, economic development and the quality of life? As always, the reference framework for understanding and interpreting library problems is that of the comparison with international library traditions, starting from the European continent, as the profession of the librarian today has a theoretical framework and an operational dimension of global reach.

    Beschreibung: The service covered by an obligation corresponds, in the definition offered by the law (art. 1174 of the Italian civil code), to an interest of the creditor. What happens if this interest, in the context of a contractual relationship, can no longer be satisfied due to unforeseen causes not attributable to the parties? The jurisprudence affirms that when an interest is objectively functional and necessary for the realization of the contractual program, its infringement can lead to the cancellation of the legal bond. However, what are the exact legal consequences of such cancellation, and what are its forms? This is the essential content of this work, aimed at investigating the foundation and content of the extra-legislative category of the unexpected unusability of a service.

    Beschreibung: This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors.

    Beschreibung: The text proposes several approaches for reflection on the subject of the governance of territorial consumption, addressing two critical issues: the dimensioning of planning and the concept of territory as a common good. The latter is understood as the outcome of cooperative behaviour and interactive practices aimed at recognition of the value of the places and the definition of rules of settlement for the protection of increasingly scarce collective resources. Exploring the relations between the limits of efficacy of the mechanisms for dimensioning the plans and responsibilities of the policies for governance of the territory – increasingly torn between public and private interests and not sufficiently "shared" - the book offers food for thought on the role of a "territorial-size" type of planning in the acknowledgement and management of the common goods.
