    Description: Learning devices can be embedded into organizational contexts. Through them learning processes can be intentionally activated as to transform employees while working. Workplaces have their own learning potential due to their high level of structuring and regulation. Their learning potential transform organizational actors while they are in the productive actions. Identifying embedded learning processes helps in intercepting learning valencies of workplace experiences and observing learning actions that can lead to transformative processes. Results of related research activities are presented in the volume. They have been carried out in more than ten years of research implemented in three types of organisations: business, museum, prison. Research experiences are analysed by using a model of study that is based on the reconstruction of the learning processes as they are experienced by the actors considered. Moreover the model is based on the analysis of learning actions that are embedded into the productive and service provision processes. Factors and conditions are analysed as well through which organisations can act on employees transformation.

    Description: The production of Giordano da Pisa (1260-1310) offers an excellent example for assessing the relationship between a Dominican preacher and his lay audience. His preaching presents simultaneously all the features that make it possible to regard it as a document of how the preacher and the public may have influenced each other. This paper illustrates how the friar proposes a social model and individual behaviours in the relationship between the ideal world and reality.

    Description: The keynote of the recent history of the faculty of educational science of Florence University is change. This has emerged in response to the demands for education expressed by a new knowledge society, spawned by the processes of globalisation, and the social need to foster interculturalism and the dialogue between diversities. In this new dimension of change, education becomes the framework for preparation, but also for re-integrating and updating life itineraries that are swift and precarious, veined with insecurity and disillusionment. Even in the new approach, the scientific and cultural benchmark continues to be a consistent adherence to the secular, historic-pedagogic and educational tradition represented by the masters of the "Florence School". Since its creation in 1996, the new faculty has staked forcefully on the centrality of training in relation to the traditional focus on the professionalism of primary and secondary school teachers, and on the new extra-scholastic training issues: the educational professions; pedagogic care; the social education of adults; the technologies of education and instruction; the philosophic, sociological, psychological and anthropological dimension of education; the broad sphere of hardship and marginalisation and the different faces of diversity.

    Description: This article draws a comparison between the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century library collection of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella and that of the Franciscan convent of Santa Croce. Such an investigation casts new light on the links between philosophy and po- etry which enliven Dante’s literary production. In particular, the author considers Aristotelian works as potential vehicles of literary knowledge about, for instance, Homeric characters.

    Description: The volume starts from the monograph of the author entitled Per una pedagogia di “confine”, deepening a series of pedagogical relationships, from the epistemological level of the relationship of pedagogy with other disciplines, to the theoretical level of learning “over the course of life”, up to the methodological level the relationships researcher/educator, teacher/student, learner in an individual/cooperative situation.     Description: Lordship management is a broad subject scarcely treated by historians; even when analysed, it has never been the object of exhaustive reconstructions and systematic surveys. The article provides a first, provisional overview of the main forms of lordship administration that changed depending on the period, region, lordship, type of revenue and many other factors. The Weberian notion of ideal type is particularly helpful in order to try to master the multiplicity and variety of forms of administration used in practice. On its basis, the essay identifies two basic ideal types, ‘Direct Management’ and ‘Indirect Management’, which are in turn divided into five sub-ideal types. Lastly, it questions the economic and social effects of each form of management, and the possibility of identifying, depending on the period and region, a more or less extensive diffusion of lordships attributable to the different ideal types.

    Description: The essay analyzes a judicial case of the Mercanzia court in the early Quattrocento Florence, which involved the execution of an insurance deed by the merchant and poet Cino Rinuccini concerning the date of the death of Ladislaus king of Naples in 1414. The case, considering the relevance of the actor and the subject of the insurance agreement, allows us to study the discussion on the legal and ethical value of such deeds. The Appendix provides the edition of a legal consilium devoted to the case, in which a distinguished commission of lawyers discusses the problem according to the interpretation of the ius commune.

    Description: The compendium collects the basic themes of biology in a very simplified form, ideally following the programmatic criteria of secondary school. The didactic program is articulated starting from the molecules that make up living organisms to end at the theoretical basis of ecology and environmental protection. All the main topics of life sciences such as genetics, anatomy and the evolution of organisms are addressed, always trying to convey the heart of the theoretical concept through a simple but adequate terminology. The goal is to offer a first look at the basis of biology to those who intend to carry out an in-depth study of this subject, which is extremely fascinating but also decidedly complex, vast and multifaceted.

    Description: The paper attempts to give some useful coordinates to start reconstructing the history of Resistance experiences (meetings, educational and teaching activities) as told at school by its protagonists.     Description: The integrated direct digital apprenticeship represents a new and crucial experimental apprenticeship modality with the primary function of guaranteeing everyone the possibility of living this entire pre- professional experience through virtual modalities and widening and enriching training opportunities for future pre-primary teachers and primary teachers. The experimental project arose from the need to respond to the need to guarantee the practicability of professional training courses at a time when, due to the pandemic, it was not possible to accommodate all students in schools.     Description: In a complex, global, multicultural and post-modern society such as the contemporary one, the concepts of "democracy", citizenship "and" training” are undergoing a more urgent and necessary rethinking, which is tracing more and more constant new variations, contaminations and interconnections. On the one hand citizenship has become today active and participatory, as today it can be exercised. On the other hand, volunteering can be a response to the need for participation claimed by contemporary societies: the donation of blood, a particular declination of the traditional concept of gift, is seen as an opportunity to participate in community life and to exercise active and responsible citizenship. From this point of view, the subject is the main actor and protagonist of contemporary processes, and must be trained in understanding the complexity of the notion of citizenship.

    Description: In the period following the Second World War Giulio Preti was one of the leading exponents of Italian philosophy. A master of open critical thought, cultivated in the light of a rationalism that dialogued with, and integrated into his own philosophical model, many of the currents and stances of the global research scenario. Phenomenology, Marxism, pragmatism, neopositivism, transcendentalism and structuralism: in Preti all of these found an organic and original synthesis. Further, his particular brand of rationalist-critical thought touched on many aspects of philosophical knowledge: theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of science, that of language and that of art, from ethics to politics and even taking in the history of philosophy, offering authoritative contributions in every sphere. One hundred years after his birth, the University of Florence and the heir to the Faculty in which he lectured at length, the Faculty of Education, has decided to honour his memory with this anthology of studies, penned by former pupils and others and also by younger scholars, to once again focus the wealth of this thought and its, in many respects, current relevance. Even now, this particular brand of open, critical rationalism can offer a benchmark for addressing the new issues for philosophical reflection thrown up by modern society and culture.

    Description: In the Historia de situ Ambrosianae urbis, written in the early fourteenth century, the notary Giovanni of Cermenate offered an unprecedented tripartite image of the Milanese contado: Seprio, north-west; Martesana, north-east; and a third indefinite “part” which can be identified with the plain south of the city, not exactly defined by Giovanni of Cermenate. The paper investigates such an absence, by linking it to the general weakness of collective identities provoked by the extraordinary economic development of the low Milanese plain.

    Description: Over the last years, the interest in teachers’ digital competence has become the object of increasing attention. The progressive digitalization of our societies led the European legislator, in 2006, to reformulate the framework of key competences, introducing digital competence among the new knowledge that school has to promote. Of course, both future and in-service teachers need to be prepared to favour students’ digital skills. This brought the European Commission to release in 2017 the DigCompEdu framework. In this chapter, we will first review some of the main conceptual models inspiring the reflection and research around teachers’ knowledge and digital skills. Then, we will focus on the DigComEdu framework, to illustrate its main areas of competences and the operational values.

    Description: The chapter presents a case study based on the design, development, and testing of an interactive 360° video applied to the teaching of Sensory Analysis of Food at the University of Florence. The case study describes the design of 360° video storyboards and the creation of the video by the use of 360° cameras for reproducing a sensory laboratory environment. Video enrichment with Vivista, an educational software allowing lecturers to embed interaction points (e.g. quizzes, texts, images) within the 360° videos is also described. Different immersive modalities for the use of the videos with students in different contexts are described and discussed. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the opportunities that 360° videos may provide to university students for practice and experience.

    Description: Bartholomew of San Concordio translated his Documenta antiquorum into the vernacular presumably around 1297-1302, during his stay at the convent of Santa Maria Novella. Cesare Segre suggested such a date based on the dedication of the translation to Geri Spini, a Florentine banker and politician who was a supporter of the Black Guelfs and a close friend of Corso Donati. However, the relationships between the Dominican Friar and the Commune of Florence, as well as the potential connections between Bartholomew’s self-translation and Florentine political contingencies, are still to be investigated.

    Description: What are the limits of a history of structures? Can we aspire to a total or global history? In a letter to Giovanni Tabacco from 1980, discovered by Gian Maria Varanini, Cinzio Violante expressed his dissatisfactions as a historian, in a period in which he renewed his methodological ideas, with new research and broad summary visions. The problems of Violante and Tabacco are still relevant nowadays, while their dialogue is the sign of a generation united by a way of being historians that became the intellectual and moral commitment of entire existences.

    Description: In August 2021, a questionnaire was sent to all those who had participated in the presentation meetings of the Integrated Digital Direct Internship Experimental Project (TDDI), a questionnaire to identify the objectives achieved. The survey was sent to 99 schools, 238 subjects including teachers, trainees and headteachers and to 18 university tutors of the Course of Studies in Primary Education at the University of Florence. The survey obtained 186 responses and allowed an initial evaluation of the results in relation to the target actually involved and informed of the experimental path. The focus is to detect the level of satisfaction of the subjects actually involved and to highlight how much TDDI can meet the expectations of school managers, teachers, students.

    Description: On the 1st of July 1504, Ercole d’Este, duke of Ferrara (1471-1505), dictated his last will. His testament (that will be published here for the first time) has two main features of interest. Apart from designating Ercole’s first son, Alfonso, as his heir, Ercole establishes here the principle of male and legitimate birth right as the only rule for future successions within the Este dynasty. He also leaves to the three unmarried sons – and only to them – an amount of resources big enough to guarantee them a decent way of life. Such resources were provvigioni (in the form of sums of money, fiscal revenues and rural properties) rich enough to let them live such as princes.

    Description: In this paper we present the results obtained from the systematic investigation of the sub-series ‘Conti erariali dei feudi’ of the fund ‘Dipendenze della Sommaria’ preserved in the State Ar- chives of Naples. A reasoned analytical inventory is proposed, limited to the documentation re- lating to the period between 1421 and 1500, for a count of 58 envelopes and 212 dossiers. This is fiscal documentation that has flowed into the Archive of the Camera della Sommaria following the deliveries by the provincial administrators required to submit their work to the audit of the rational of the king, but also as a result of traumas and confiscations on fiefs by the sovereign.

    Description: More than four hundred letters and postcards remain of the long correspondence between Carlo Cipolla, born in Verona and professor of modern history in Turin and then in Florence, and Luigi Schiaparelli, one of the students from his time in Turin. The majority of the letters came from the student, on the grounds of communicative asymmetry and conservative accidents. There are over twenty years of epistolary dialogue (1894-1916) in this publication, which now contributes significantly to the knowledge of Schiaparelli (the first modern scholar of diplomacy and palaeography in Italy), his years of apprenticeship and his career début, as well as on the vicissitudes of the last years of Cipolla’s career. Further insights are also gained on several aspects of the history of historical studies in Italy (and partly in Germany) in the decades between the 19th and 20th century, up to the World War I. The correspondence offers infinite, unpublished glimpses and lively accounts on people, events and discussions animating this intense season of Medieval Studies.

    Description: This article draws a comparison between Dante’s vision and the cultural, political, and propagandistic conception promoted by the Angevins, from the divergences in the interpretation of Aquinas’ doctrine of Justice to the ones regarding the notion of nobility. Dante expressely chooses his meeting with the Angevin Charles Martel (Pd. VIII) to set human free will in opposition to the Angevin vision of virtue as a good inherited from generation to generation: Charles is a virtuous man not because of, but despite being born into a family which denies the authority of Empire, which is to say the only guarantor of the bonum commune.

    Description: The Integrated Direct Digital Internship (TDDI) represented a new and important method of internship of an experimental nature (in collaboration with the Regional School Office for Tuscany) which had as its primary objective to guarantee all students the opportunity to live this fundamental pre-professional experience. The project, born almost by chance to support the condition of professional fragility caused by the pandemic, has favored the search for a new model which, through the integration of virtual methods, has expanded and enriched the training opportunities for future teachers by implementing courses unpublished. From the point of view of educational and scientific research, it was a question of experimenting, evaluating and developing differentiated professional learning practices through the comparison between innovative tools and traditional tools in order to achieve a reasoned integration.

    Description: Practical traineeship has reached a stage of high juridical and scientific recognition in the initial training courses to become preschool and primary school teachers, but also in the field of methodological and didactic studies. Indeed, since its introduction in the university pathway, at the same time as the birth of degree courses in Science of Primary Education in the nineties of the twentieth century and in the wake of what is provided by the Delegated Decrees, practical traineeship activities have reached a very mature degree of definition. To talk about direct digital integrated practical traineeship (TDDI) means to insert the discourse in the evolutionary line just mentioned. However, in this contribution I will focus only on some steps that I think are useful to reflect on the TDDI experience.

    Description: The enforcement of the sentence in a (re)educational perspective is a highly debated topic in different approaches, including the multidisciplinary ones. In this volume, the topic is discussed from a compensatory perspective, namely through the acknowledgement of the need to prepare educational tools to contrast the 'adverse educational actions', to which the prison population may be exposed, and to the phenomenon of repeated infractions. In addition to the elements of the treatment program (which is structured, intentional, legally regulated and procedure-like), every phase of the sentence enforcement, even those taken for granted, includes an educational value and presents itself as a growth and improvement opportunity for each prisoner. As evidence to the variety of experiences (in the educational sense), this volume collects a series of contributions by professionals from the criminal justice system who support the changing processes of prisoners.

    Description: The aim of this paper is to reassess the history of the Sanseverino family, princes of Bisignano in Calabria in the Late Middle Ages; by focusing on a specific and unpublished source: the so-called “reintegre or platee” as written in the first half of the 16th century. These are public sources mostly enlisting properties and benefits; they serve the purpose of re-possessing the privileges taken from the princes themselves over the previous century. The paper will therefore focus not only on the management and character of the seigneurial landholdings but also on the reconstruction of both the local networks of power exerted on the population and the local political system. It will shed new light on the still debated historiographical issue centered on the seigneurial authority in southern Italy by assessing its local rooting and pervasiveness since the 14th century.

    Description: Between 1290 and 1310, two Mendicant friars active in Florence dealt with the controversial issue of usury: the Franciscan lector Peter of Trabibus, who until now has been studied primarily for his relationship to Olivi’s teaching, and the Dominican Remigio de’ Girolami. In the mid-nineties of the thirteenth century, in the context of his quodlibetal questions, Peter of Trabibus discusses the social role of merchants and he broaches the question of the restitution of usurious gains. Some years later, Remigio also deals with similar issues in his quodlibetal questions and writes a treatise that bears the title De peccato usurae.

    Description: The birth and development of disciplines, as organized knowledge that guides the interpretation of reality, are inscribed in the heritage of the knowledge of our species. These follow the triple regulating principles of the historical flux of the meanings of feeling and thinking: cognitive potential, mental processing, intangible and tangible products. The flow from the indistinct feeling of the origins evolves through the archaic forms of the magic thought; to the ancient forms of declarative thought up to the modern forms of demonstrative thought. The latter with the separation between disciplines does not recognize the interconnection inherent in reality, loses the scientific revolution character and generates the unsustainable human development on the planet. From the global interconnection experience of the contemporary world, a new paradigm comes to life: transdisciplinarity, whose epistemology recomposes the knowledge and reality’s unity and diversity beyond the barriers between disciplines.

    Description: In Italy, women have been able to graduate only since 1875; in Florence, at the end of the century, just fifteen women obtained the graduation at the Institute of Higher Studies. The Libraries of the University of Florence, heirs to the Institute, have intended to celebrate those first female graduates (1875-1940) and their stories, by cataloguing, digitalizing and publishing online their thesis. The oldest or most significant ones, with archival materials, photos and publications, have been exhibited at the Humanities Library. This volume illustrates the exposition and the outcome of this original documentation, thus allowing to define the peculiarities of the Florentine reality, offering the opportunity for further studies and giving visibility to women who have played a substantial role in the Italian culture, so as to not lose their memory.

    Description: Between the 13th and 14th centuries, a number of cities in the inchoative papal state experimented a system of self-government that allowed the Guelph and Ghibelline factions, formally represented in those same bodies on an equal footing, to work alongside the more strictly communal magistracies. The case of Todi is rather well known, given the role that Bartolo da Sassoferrato assigns to it in his Tractatus de guelphis et gebellinis (ca. 1350), but current research has already ascertained that this political tradition appeared at least around 1260. Some evidence can suggest, however, that some form of integration of factions into the local institutional framework was possible elsewhere, and not far away, at Amelia for example. Here, in the new statute of the people (1343), we find a distribution of the roles of the priorato based on factions. At Todi, in 1337, something similar had happened: the statute issued that year followed the establishment of an explicitly popular regime which, in continuity with local tradition, integrated Guelphs and Ghibellines within it. The examples of these, and perhaps other, communities in the province of the Patrimonio di San Pietro in Tuscia can thus add some useful elements to the discussion of the problem of factions and their role in the communal and post-communal political order, and in particular the relationship between the people (popolo) as an institutional system and the parties.

    Description: This volume shows the outcome of a series of meetings and seminars which, on several levels, contributed to the construction of the International Conference La ricerca sull’Educazione in età Adulta nelle università italiane held at the University of Florence on the 23rd and 24th November 2017. The different contributions have tried to answer the question on the origin and development of adult education in Italy within academic contexts. What does it mean to work in this research field? The interviewed directors have reflected on a number of research approaches and have reconstructed the variety of theories, models and authors which outlined the development of this discipline in Italy over the last fifty years. Among the covered topics are: increasing the educational quality of the workplace, understanding the education incorporated in the workplace, studying the aims of education in formal and informal contexts. This has led to a new and original theme, which had however not been touched by the Italian academic literature, namely the question of inequalities and relative poverty, two important phenomena for understanding the development of future societies.

    Description: My essay focuses on the correspondences sent to the Gonzaga of Mantua and received and preserved in the Mantuan chancery during the 14th century. The broad range of correspondences gathered in the Mantuan archives covers almost all the north and central Italy, from Tuscany to the Val d’Adige, from Genoa to Venice. Its quantity and variety open the gate to a most needed investigation of the epistolary forms of political and diplomatic communication in the 14th century, therefore fostering a better understanding of this crucial period, squeezed between the better known communal Duecento and princely Quattrocento.

    Description: Building on recent scholarship, this article sketches the development of the Florentine studium of Santa Maria Novella in the thirteenth century, before it became a studium generale between 1305 and 1311. The catalogue of Santa Maria Novella’s library and the information regarding works which were conceived there are collected and analysed to outline the core of the ancient library. The first quire of the manuscript Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Conv. soppr. G 3.451 (cc. 1-8) constitutes a notable case study for the learning interests of Dominican friars. Finally, this article discusses the controversial letter written by Nicholas Trevet to the dedicatee of his commentary on Boethius’ Consolatio Philosophiae and re-assesses its disputed connec- tion with the Florentine environment.

Based from this perspective, the paper is going to speak about a students' cycle of meetings organised in some schools in the province of Pistoia, between 2016 and 2018: the vocational institute "Martini" and the technical institute "Marchi". Meetings were held by SIlvano Sarti, who fought as partisan in the "Brigata Sinigaglia" in 1944 and who was appointed ANPI provincial president in Florence.

    Description: In recent years, historiographical reflection has devoted more and more attention to the rela- tionship between the exercise of power and the processes of production/management of doc- uments, understood as real instruments of government, capable of guaranteeing the correct functioning of the administrative apparatus of kingdoms, principalities, republics and lord- ships, more or less extensive. The essay investigates one of the most important noble archives of the fifteenth-century Southern Italy, the archive of the Prince of Taranto, Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo, which over time has been invested by a vast process of dispersion.     Description: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction).

    Description: Cartoline is a didactic method practised by the studies center "Yad Vashem". Starting from the observation and the study of an image, pupils and teachers think about it invlving themselves in a dynamic lesson stimulated by some guided-questions the teacher made. The teachers asked students to create a circle where some images are putted into. Students are asked to choose one of them and to write a words the image suggest them. The image is not contextualized and it shows daily item as a glass of milk or common action as petting an animal. Only afterward the teacher is going to contextualize the image: the glass of milk rapresent the amount of calories (184) assumed by prisoners in concentration camp. A discussion with students is launched.

    Description: The fundamental principles of freedom, security, democracy, and the regulatory mechanisms of the European Union, as well as the pronouncements of the European Convention for the protection of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms (ECHR) can be subject to dangerous violations within criminal justice systems. When these violations are perpetrated by the actors called to protect the same rights and freedoms, the institutions must also prepare the educational devices which are required for their prevention. This volume intends to investigate the complexity of educational actions - primarily informal ones - which accompany the creation of the operators’ knowledge of the analysed systems, as well as the methods of their growth. The contents are discussed starting from the research hypotheses, and on the basis of the experimentation of the embedded learning in the prison of Chieti (under the supervision of the Department of Education and Psychology of the University of Florence).

    Description: The volume is a collection of the papers from a study seminar held at the University of Florence Faculty of Education and Training Sciences in March 2012 entitled Formazione e orientamento al lavoro. Le sfide della disabilità adulta. The aim of the initiative was to highlight a topic/problem which has little or no resonance in civil society, or in study and research contexts, namely, training and career guidance for disabled adults. The volume also recounts a course of studies carried out by Le Rose, a cooperative from the municipality of Florence, involving empirical research on the relationship between disability and job placement. As well as proposing an interdisciplinary and multifaceted reflection on a definitely innovative topic, the intention is to emphasize the central place of work in the lives of all people and the role that suitable education and training plays in constructing the adult identity. Care for the place where the job training is carried out, as well as attention to the relationships and actions pursued by the workers undertaking to develop job placement programmes, are central dimensions for the construction of a renewed culture of inclusion, citizenship and social and personal recognition.

    Description: The essay offers an analysis of the largest concentration of records concerning the feudal lord- ship in the Kingdom of Naples from the 15th to the 17th century, the serie Relevi, kept at the Ar- chivio di Stato of Naples. The Relevi were the core of the enormous mass of records hold by the Archives of the Camera della Sommaria in Naples. These files must be considered as a whole: by tracing the creation, the evolution and the integration of the archives of the most important fiscal and financial court of the reign, the paper points out the crucial links between archivistic order, government of the state and seigneural power in the Aragonese and Spanish era.

    Description: This wide-ranging theme takes Braudel’s concept of the “Mediterranean” as its starting point. Braudel’s vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel’s concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests.

    Description: The idea behind this book – devoted to the relations between adults and children – emerged within a specific educational experience launched in an experimental manner in 2006 by the faculty of educational science of Florence University and now in its fourth edition. These are teaching courses held in the evening and on Saturdays to make it easier for students with daytime jobs to attend the lessons. The quest for new forms of organisation was accompanied by a meditation on teaching, which brought out several very interesting educational themes which were effectively transversal to the various disciplines. This book presents the results of this methodological approach, aimed at fostering a conscious, reflective and personal learning. As the title suggests, the essays are designed to focus the question of the educational relationship within a multidisciplinary perspective. Us-them, to remind ourselves that adults have a fundamental and inescapable responsibility. The relationship is typically asymmetrical, with special features and decidedly variable over time. It has in fact been marked for centuries by a failure to recognise the needs of the youngsters and their own subjectivity, to the point of arriving at disturbing levels of violence and coercion. Such cases have been justly referred to a 'black pedagogy', which sadly is far from being everywhere a thing of the past, and even in Italy has left deep and persistent traces. For these reasons the study of the educational relationship has numerous relevant aspects of interest, all extremely topical, and represents a fundamental argument that adults must consciously address. Educators and teachers, parents and students, can all thus enhance their sensitivity and competence with a view to consolidating the reflective practices that are now considered absolutely indispensable for those who live in contact with children and adolescents.

    Description: Since the mid 20th century, the criticism of mass culture has been marked by the "apocalyptic" positions of many authors. Through the texts and ideas of three these "apocalyptic" authors (or, at least, of three authors defined as such: Adorno, Pasolini and Baudrillard), but also through the most current criticisms of ICT, the text suggests to re-read the apocalyptic authors. At the same time, it highlights the limits of information and communication technologies and their partial outdatedness, while also trying to draw inspiration from them in order to develop a model of media education which may keep alive the dialectical charge between the possibilities offered by technology and the pitfalls it sometimes hides. The apocalyptic authors, in fact, can support the need for a semiological, critical-sociological and pedagogical work, which considers the media as a problem, and creates and gives the subjects the analysis, interpretation and (critical) use skills of the media themselves. The aim is to create a form of literacy with respect to old and new "languages of knowledge", but above all with respect to the formation of critical and thoughtful, free and creative "well-made heads".

    Description: The essay addresses the problem of the relationship between large aristocratic families and “noble parishes” in Genoa, by considering the case of the Doria and the church of San Matteo, founded in 1125 and whose reconstruction was planned in 1278. On the one hand, three qualifying aspects of the Doria kinship are examined in order to understand the role of the small church in enhancing the coordination of the group: i.e., positions of leadership and command in the maritime city and in its government; dispersion and presence outside Genoa; numerical strength, residence and leadership. On the other hand, the article considers the insertion of San Matteo in the monastic network (not only in Liguria) headed by the abbey of San Fruttuoso, and how its reconstruction allowed for the diversification of the large family internal and external relevance. The conclusion, thanks to the comparison with the experiences of other important urban families, shows the uniqueness of this case study and how broader and more systematic comparisons should be made, even outside the Genoese context.

    Description: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction).

    Description: The Bayeux Tapestry (or rather, embroidery) is one of the most famous medieval artworks, which narrates in images the conquest of England by the Normans led by Duke William the Conqueror. Images taken from the embroidery are reproduced on thousands of objects evoking the Middle Ages, and at the same time the work has been the subject of hundreds of studies in many European countries, by historians, art historians and narrative scholars. In all of this, some questions and some answers are lacking, in particular with regard to the political culture expressed in the work: there is no doubt that the embroidery is a narrative of the exploits of William the Conqueror, an attempt to reconcile the English and Normans and in part an exaltation of the role of Odo, bishop of Bayeux; but it is also the expression of a series of political ideals and models of order, a reading and an evaluation of the system of contemporary power, organized around the kingdom and based on the primacy of the aristocracy and the value of personal ties. The volume aims to follow this line of research, showing how the embroidery, from many points of view (the political ceremonial, the role of the king, the aristocratic bonds of fidelity), reflects a social imaginary and a series of clearly recognizable political ideals.

    Description: In Europe the social economy employs almost 15 million workers. During the crisis years, unlike other sectors, it has often generated an increase in jobs. The aim of this comparative study is to investigate how to allow the supply and demand for young people to meet in the different types of social economy bodies. In particular, it concentrates on the problem of how to bring into line initial university training and the skills required by these organizations. The focus is placed on the varied family of training workers present in at least 75% of the organizations, whose professionalism is nevertheless rarely acknowledged. The papers proposed in this book try to identify the most suitable solutions at the level of curriculum, career development and accompanying measures, while drawing solutions from objective findings and not from training system needs or convictions.

    Description: By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies (‘platee’) of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory.
